Church Stewardship - Practical Implications – 11

All Born-Again Christian Believers, at the moment of their salvation, are made a part of God’s Church and are placed by God in fellowship of His other children. For these, and other privileges given by God at salvation, every Believer is a steward of God and is also accountable to Him for fulfilling his stewardship worthily. As stewards of God’s Church and of the fellowship of His children, the Believers are to be involved in the growth of the Church and spiritual progress of God’s other children. For this, as we have learnt in the past few articles, the role of the ministry of God’s Word is of paramount importance. Those entrusted with the ministry of God’s Word are to serve God’s Word to the Church and God’s children regularly, adequately, and properly – both in quality as well quantity. In the recent articles we have seen some aspects of this ministry. In the last article we saw from Paul’s summary of his ministry in Ephesus that he, under the guidance of the Holy Spirit, had unhesitatingly declared to them the whole counsel of God. Therefore, when he went from Ephesus to Macedonia, he left Timothy behind to ensure that those who preach and teach there, should not teach anything other than what Paul had taught. We saw the salient features of Paul’s ministry in Ephesus, which provide a scriptural guideline for us today to follow, especially for those engaged in the ministry of God’s Word. Today we will consider some more Biblical instructions in context of the Word ministry; instructions that help the Church to grow and the Believers to progress in their spiritual lives.

We have seen some very important aspects of the ministry of God’s Word for the growth and progress of the Church and the Believers from 1 Timothy 1:3-4 in the recent articles. There is another important instruction that must also be taken note of; it is stated later in Paul's first letter to Timothy. In 1 Timothy 4:6, while giving instructions to Timothy through the Holy Spirit, Paul asks him to instruct others about that which has been given i.e., has been taught or instructed to him. Through our study of 1 Timothy 1:3-4 in the previous two articles, we have already seen and understood why Paul is asking Timothy to do this. But here, in 1 Timothy 4:6, we see another benefit, for the preacher, of sincerely preaching and teaching God’s pure Word in its truth and entirety, under the guidance of the Holy Spirit.

It is written here that by doing this “you will be a good minister of Jesus Christ, nourished in the words of faith and of the good doctrine which you have carefully followed.” In other words, Paul is pointing out to Timothy that when he faithfully instructs others about God’s pure Word, and he himself also takes care to carefully continue to follow the ‘good doctrine’ that he is preaching and teaching to others, it will contribute to his own spiritual growth and stability. So, here we have a two-fold benefit of being “a good minister of Jesus Christ” i.e., sincerely and honestly ministering God’s Word, instead of being a minister of man’s word, instead of ministering fables and genealogies contrived by man. These two benefits are, firstly it will cause the growth and progress of the Church and the Believers; and secondly, it will cause such a preacher and teacher to himself be “nourished in the words of faith and of the good doctrine” which he shares and also carefully follows. The lesson is, for the Believer’s own spiritual growth, they should sincerely and honestly teach others the true and unadulterated Word of God.

As one goes through both these letters of instructions written by Paul to Timothy, we see that nowhere does he ask or encourage him to use his own wisdom and understanding about this ministry. Rather, Paul only asks and repeatedly emphasizes upon him to instruct others about what he has already received, has already been instructed about. Timothy had mainly learned these things through his association with Paul. And we have seen earlier that Paul always preached, taught, and instructed nothing out of his own knowledge, wisdom, and understanding, but only what he received from the Lord, what he had through the inspiration of the Holy Spirit. This instruction of Paul to Timothy is very similar to what the Lord Jesus had instructed His disciples at the time of His ascension, in the Great Commission (Matthew 28:18-20) – the disciples had to preach and teach only that which the Lord had taught them, and do so under the power of the Holy Spirit (Acts 1:8). Since their obedience to the Lord’s instructions was essential, therefore, by implication, they were not to practice, preach, or teach anything that they contrived through their own wisdom and understanding.

In his second letter to Timothy, Paul also asks him to be one who rightly divides God's Word (2 Timothy 2:14-17). For any person this discernment can only come through being dependent upon the Holy Spirit, since, as the Believer’s Helper, one of the functions of the Holy Spirit is to teach and expound God’s Word to them (John 14:26; 16:13; 1 Corinthians 2:10-14). It is a sad and a very difficult to understand bitter fact of Christianity, that in the Churches or Assemblies and amongst Believers, there is an inordinate but prevalent tendency for Believers to rely more upon men, men’s teachings, words, and writings, and often even on men’s fables, than upon the Holy Spirit of God to learn God’s Word and its practical implications and application in life. And, this tendency manifests itself in many ways in the life of Believers, e.g., as following men, as in blind faith copying the words, phrases, and mannerisms of men without cross-checking and examining them, as forming factions in the Church; causing and maintaining divisions in the Church and amongst Believers; ignoring the God given methods and the Biblical instructions for the functioning of the Church and instead following man-made rules, regulations and instructions; putting man before God in taking decisions; of trying to be a man-pleaser rather than a God pleaser; of being more afraid of man than of God etc. It sooner or later leads to various problems in the Believer’s own lives, in the Church, and in fellowship amongst God’s children.

If we, for whatever reasons, are unable to contribute to the growth and progress of the Church and the Believers; then the least we can do is not in any way preach and teach things that contribute to disunity and divisions in the Church. For this, all that we need to do is to stop following persons and copying their words, and actually start following God and obeying His Word. Paul through the Holy Spirit, has set himself as an example of following the Lord; and wants that others too should follow the Lord in the same manner as he was doing, since what he was preaching and teaching was not something he had devised, but what he had received from the Lord for the Believers and Church of the Lord (1 Corinthians 11:1; 1 Thessalonians 4:1-2).

From the next article we will start considering the role of the Church Elders and some aspects of enforcing discipline in the Church.

If you have not yet accepted the discipleship of the Lord, make your decision in favor of the Lord Jesus now to ensure your eternal life and heavenly blessings. Where there is obedience to the Lord, where there is respect and obedience to His Word, there is also the blessing and protection of the Lord. Voluntarily repent of your sins, and ask the Lord Jesus to forgive your sins; voluntarily and sincerely, surrender yourself to Him - this is the only way to salvation and heavenly life. You only have to say a short but sincere prayer to the Lord Jesus Christ willingly and with a penitent heart, and at the same time completely commit and submit your life to Him. You can also make this prayer and submission in words something like, “Lord Jesus, I am sorry for my sins and repent of them. I thank you for taking my sins upon yourself, paying for them through your life.  Because of them you died on the cross in my place, were buried, and you rose again from the grave on the third day for my salvation, and today you are the living Lord God and have freely provided to me the forgiveness, and redemption from my sins, through faith in you. Please forgive my sins, take me under your care, and make me your disciple. I submit my life into your hands." Your one prayer from a sincere and committed heart will make your present and future life, in this world and in the hereafter, heavenly and blessed for eternity.

Church Stewardship - Practical Implications – 10

The Born-Again Christian Believers, as stewards of the provisions and privileges given to them by God, are accountable to Him for worthily utilizing them. Of these provisions and privileges, the one we have currently been learning about is God having made the Believers members of God’s Church and having them brought into fellowship with God’s other children, by God. As stewards of these Church related privileges, it is the responsibility of the Believers to see that they contribute to the growth of the Church, and help the Believers progress in their spiritual lives. We have seen that proper ministry of God’s Word, in quality as well as quantity, in the Church and amongst the Believers determines this growth and progress of the Church as well as the Believers; and in the previous articles we have seen some aspects of this. In the last article we started considering 1 Timothy 1:3-4, and in our consideration of 1 Timothy 1:3, where Paul asks Timothy to ensure that no other doctrine, other than the one he had taught to the Ephesian Church is taught by the others, we had seen how Timothy had to do this. In Acts 20:18-27, Paul reminisces with the Elders of the Ephesian Church about his ministry amongst them. The summary of  Paul’s teachings in Ephesus is given in Acts 20:18-20, 27. Today, we will see from this passage in Acts about the “doctrine” that Paul had taught in Ephesus, and had asked Timothy to ensure it was being taught by others also; and also consider 1 Timothy 1:4 regarding the ministry of God’s Word.

In these verses from Acts 20:18-20, 27, we see the main features of this “doctrine” that Paul had taught in Ephesus. Paul is asking Timothy to ensure that only those teachings are being taught, and nothing new is brought in by anybody in their preaching and teaching. The implication is that which was so necessary for the Ephesian Church, that Timothy was to ensure adherence to it, is equally necessary for the present-day Churches, and the Believers, as God’s stewards, need to ensure that these doctrines are adhered to.

Paul’s doctrinal points that he practiced, as summarized here in Acts 20, are:

  • Verse 18: Paul made it appoint to live an exemplary life amongst them, i.e., he first practiced and demonstrated his faith and its implications in his life amongst his audience, the people around him; only then did he preach about it; and continued to affirm his preaching by living out whatever he preached.

  • Verse 19: In doing this, Paul’s primary intention was to serve the Lord – be a God pleaser, and not a man pleaser (Galatians 1:10). In this verse Paul says that he had a deep burden for the sin of the people in Ephesus who were given to idolatry and debauchery, and he pleaded to God for them with tears. Paul ministered God’s Word to them in humility, patiently putting up with the opposition and problems being brought upon him by his detractors – the Jews, the “people of God,” who claimed to follow the Scriptures given to them by God. In other words, Paul’s preaching and teaching exposed the errors and deficiencies in the lives of these “people of God,” who claimed to follow the Scriptures, which made them uncomfortable. So, instead of evaluating and correcting themselves, they responded by trying to stop Paul from preaching and teaching such things. But Paul persevered, undaunted by the problems they brought against him. The lesson to learn is that the characteristics of ministers of God’s Word must be to have a heartfelt burden for the misled and lost, and persevere in ministering to them; and despite facing opposition and rejection from ones he is trying to help, live humbly in all circumstances.

  • Verse 20, 27: Paul did not have his own agenda for the preaching and teaching he was to do. We have seen in the previous articles that Paul depended upon the Holy Spirit to give him the appropriate Word to preach and teach. Under the guidance of the Holy Spirit, he preached and taught to the Church, all that was helpful for them, in this manner he unhesitatingly declared to them the “whole counsel of God” as guided by the Holy Spirit. In other words, the Holy Spirit gave him the plan and outline, and then under His guidance and appropriate manner gave him the ability and wisdom to preach and teach everything from God’s word. Had Paul done this on his own, then quite likely he might not have been able to do it as well through his own wisdom; he could have left out some things, could have forgotten to mention some other things, could have felt that preaching and teaching some other things was not necessary, etc. But in the planning and guidance of the Holy Spirit he could teach them the whole counsel of God, in the adverse circumstances. This clearly explains to us why Paul gave this instruction to Timothy and insisted that what he had taught and preached to them while he was with them in Ephesus, only that should now be taught and preached by others, and nothing other than that. Since that was the “whole counsel of God;” that was what the Ephesian Church needed to know and learn, and it is equally important and necessary for us as well, today. As mentioned here in verse 20, Paul did this through three methods – preaching and teaching to the “you,” i.e., the Church, the congregation; preaching publicly to those outside the Church; preaching and teaching from house to house. This shows us the three components that must be carried out for the Word ministry to be effective, for the Church and the Believers to grow.

  • Verse 21: Witnessing for his faith and preaching the Gospel, “repentance toward God and faith toward our Lord Jesus Christ” was an essential and integral part of Paul’s ministry. Paul’s main intention was not showing off his knowledge and understanding of the Scriptures, nor his eloquence, nor his ability of delivering messages that would be pleasing to the audience; but calling people to repentance and faith in the Lord Jesus. In both his letters of instructions to Timothy, Paul has emphasized to him for doing the same (1 Timothy 4:11, 15-16; 2 Timothy 4:1-5).

Then in 1 Timothy 1:4 Paul expressly cautions Timothy against going after fables (i.e., man-made stories) and endless genealogies, in his preaching and teachings. In other words, the content and manner of the preaching and teaching of the Word also has a bearing on the outcome, and should not be contrived, but should be truly and sincerely be Biblical. In this verse Paul also cautions Timothy that resorting to using fables and genealogies, i.e., using man-made stories and arguments to preach and teach God’s Word only causes disputes, and does not bring about godly edification; edification only happens through God’s Word. In other words, though they may seem interesting and attractive, though people may appreciate them, but these fables and genealogies never bring about growth and edification of the Church or of the believers. Hence, as it was then for Timothy, similarly today the ministers of God’s Word should make it a point to stick to God’s Word, learn what is to be preached on each occasion from the Holy Spirit, expound it to the audience as the Holy Spirit leads them to do, instead of creating stories and scenarios on their own, which will be vain and fruitless.

We will carry on from here in the next article, and look at some other aspects of the ministry of God’s Word from some other passages.

If you have not yet accepted the discipleship of the Lord, make your decision in favor of the Lord Jesus now to ensure your eternal life and heavenly blessings. Where there is obedience to the Lord, where there is respect and obedience to His Word, there is also the blessing and protection of the Lord. Voluntarily repent of your sins, and ask the Lord Jesus for forgiveness of your sins; voluntarily and sincerely, surrender yourself to Him - this is the only way to salvation and heavenly life.

Church Stewardship - Practical Implications – 9

All the Born-Again Christian Believers are stewards of their God given privileges and provisions, and are accountable to God for them. God has made the Born-Again Christian Believers part of His Church, and in His Church, He has put them in fellowship with His other children. One aspect of their worthily fulfilling their stewardship of the Church and their fellowship with God’s other children is to ensure the growth of the Church and of the Believers. As we have been seeing in the recent articles, this growth comes about when God’s pure Word is preached and taught adequately – qualitatively and quantitatively. Any adulteration of God’s Word by words and concepts of man’s wisdom, even if done to make it sound more effective, pious, honoring to God, actually does the opposite; it renders it ineffective and does not help the spiritual growth of the Believer or of the Church. We have seen some aspects of this in the preceding articles, and today, from Paul’s instructions to his co-worker and under-study, Timothy, under the guidance of the Holy Spirit, we will see some more aspects of using God’s Word to build up the Church and the Believers. The main passage that we will be using is 1 Timothy 1:3-4, and today we will be concentrating upon verse 3 along with some other verses from the Bible.

We see from 1 Timothy 1:3 that when Paul had left for ministry in Macedonia, he had left Timothy behind in Ephesus and charged him to ensure that the “some” others there teach no other doctrine, i.e., nothing other than the one he and Paul had been preaching, teaching, and following. Paul’s ministry in Ephesus is given in Act chapter 19. At the beginning of Acts chapter 20 we see that compelled by the very strong opposition he faced in Ephesus (1 Corinthians 15:32), Paul left for Macedonia, which he earlier had been planning to do (Acts 19:21). In Acts chapter 20, while returning to Jerusalem, he called for the Elders from Ephesus (Acts 20:17), and reminisced with them his ministry amongst them (Acts 20:18-27) and then gave them some further instructions about the things that would occur in the coming days (Acts 20:28-38).

For our current context, there is something important here. Paul’s ministry in Ephesus was for two years (Acts 19:10); and in these two years, because of receiving the solid food of the Word through Paul (Acts 19:20), “some” in that Church had matured to be able to preach and teach God’s Word. This is in sharp contrast to Hebrews 5:12. Paul is not forbidding them from preaching and teaching, implying that he was aware of and supportive of their ability; he is only ensuring that they do not deviate from preaching and teaching the true Word of God. Those who mature to take up this ministry of preaching and teaching in the Church, should be encouraged and given the opportunity to do so, but not in an uncontrolled, free to say and do anything manner. But the content and manner of their preaching and teaching should be kept under evaluation to make sure that they do not say or preach anything inappropriate or incorrect; and this should actually be done for everyone, including the elders, preaching and teaching in the Church (1 Corinthians 14:29).

There is another important and worthy of consideration aspect of this as well, that those preachers who are newer, are less experienced and learned, should remain ready to receive and accept the criticism, correction, and control of the spiritually senior or more experienced and learned preachers and teachers. They should not consider themselves to be free from being checked and corrected, and free to preach and teach whatever they think is correct. This is affirmed by the fact that Timothy, whom Paul had left behind to ensure this, was a youth in his physical age, but because of being with and having learnt from Paul (2 Timothy 3:10-14), he had matured more than others in the Word, and was capable of teaching and correcting others. That is why the Holy Spirit permitted Paul to give him this responsibility; and Paul under the Holy Spirit wrote to him that he should use the Word of God for “doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness” (2 Timothy 3:16); and “Those who are sinning rebuke in the presence of all, that the rest also may fear” (1 Timothy 5:20)। It was his responsibility to “Preach the word! Be ready in season and out of season. Convince, rebuke, exhort, with all longsuffering and teaching” (2 Timothy 4:2).  Though his physical age was less, but his spiritual age was more than the others, therefore, he was given the responsibility of teaching and correcting others, even harshly and publicly, if required; and it was expected that the others would comply and listen to him.

In other words, when the true Word of God is given in the right and appropriate manner, then the Church as well as the Believers will grow and progress; and for the correct teaching of the correct Word, the spiritually senior minister of God’s Word has the authority to exhort, teach, correct, and rebuke the junior or less experienced ministers and the people of the congregation, if required even publicly. In contrast, despite the ministry of the Word in the Church, if there is no growth and progress, then it can be a sign of something being wrong in that Word which is being preached and taught; of there being some adulteration in the Word, because of which though it may be attractive and popular or appreciated, but it is not effective.

The “doctrine” that Paul had taught in Ephesus, and had asked Timothy to ensure that it was being followed by others also, its summary can be seen from Acts 20:18-20, 27. We will learn from these verses of Acts and from 1 Timothy 1:4 in the next article.

If you have not yet accepted the discipleship of the Lord, make your decision in favor of the Lord Jesus now to ensure your eternal life and heavenly blessings. Where there is obedience to the Lord, where there is respect and obedience to His Word, there is also the blessing and protection of the Lord. Voluntarily repenting of your sins, and asking the Lord Jesus for forgiveness of your sins, voluntarily and sincerely, surrender yourself to Him - this is the only way to salvation and heavenly life.

Church Stewardship - Practical Implications – 8

God has placed the Believers in His Church and in fellowship with His other children, thereby the Believers are also stewards of these privileges granted to them by God. As God’s stewards of their God given provisions, the Christian Believers will give an account to Him of how worthily they have fulfilled their responsibilities (Ecclesiastes 12:13-14; 2 Corinthians 5:10). In the previous articles we have learnt about the Church and fellowshipping with God’s children, and have seen the Believer’s responsibilities towards them. Presently we are learning the practical implications, the applications of what we have learnt. In the last article we saw about the relationship between God’s Word and the spiritual growth of the Believers as well as the Church. For the growth to happen, the Word of God, proper and correct in its quality and quantity, unadulterated by human thoughts and wisdom, must be regularly given by the God appointed ministers (2 Timothy 2:14-15), and must be properly received by the Believers (2 Timothy 3:16). We also saw the three categories of the teachings from God’s Word that should be taught and reminded to the Church and Believers, to prevent their spiritual decline. Today we will see some more about this Biblical manner of ministry of God’s Word, the one that edifies the Believers and the Church.

This is a Biblical fact, equally applicable even today, that the truly Born-Again Christian Believer’s and God’s actual Church grows and becomes strong only where the Word of God is preached and taught in its purity, unadulterated by any human thoughts and concepts. The more diligently, regularly, and painstakingly it is done; the more the Believers involve themselves in learning and following it, the better it is for them. In other words, not going after the contrived teachings of man devised through human wisdom and thoughts, but obeying the pure Word of God, applying Acts 17:11 and 1 Thessalonians 5:21 to every teaching and message they receive, is mandatory. The more they do it, the better and stronger they will grow and progress in their spiritual lives and Christian living; and therefore, the better will be the growth and progress of the Church.

We have seen in earlier articles that Paul and Apollos have made themselves examples to show that they had firmly resolved to not go beyond the written Word (1 Corinthians 4:6). This applies even more to the ministers of God’s Word today; since they have the tendency of relying more on what they have learnt in their colleges and Seminaries, or from Commentaries and Bible helps, or from some other persons, instead of relying on the Holy Spirit to learn, preach, and teach God’s Word. Take note that both Paul and Apollos were people highly trained by men in the “College” or “Seminary” of their times; and for Apollos it is also written that he was “an eloquent man and mighty in the Scriptures” (Acts 18:24). Yet, in their ministry of God’s word, both Paul and Apollos preached only what the Holy Spirit gave them, and made sure that they did not go beyond the already written Word, i.e., did not add to it in any manner. Therefore, it is imperative that the ministers of God’s Word today, too should see that they depend upon the Holy Spirit to give them the appropriate Word to preach and teach, and never to go beyond what God has given in His Word, i.e., never add their own wisdom and interpretations to God’s Word to give it meanings and implications that are not stated in God’s Word about that passage or instruction.

In any case, we should never forget that the Bible teaches us that adding or subtracting from God's Word has serious consequences for those who do so (Deuteronomy 4:2; Proverbs 30:6; Revelation 22:18-19). And Paul has written through the Holy Spirit that any attempts to modify the Word, to make it look more attractive by adding things of a man’s wisdom, only serves to spoil the efficacy and effects of God’s Word, and hamper the growth of Believers as well as the Churches (1 Corinthians 1:17; 2:4-5).

Deviating from these principles results in factionalism in the Church, because then there is the tendency of following a person and not the Lord (1 Corinthians 1:11-13). This tendency of accepting and showing one person, one minister of God, and his preaching and teachings to be better or superior to the others is what leads to creation of sects and denominations (1 Corinthians 11:18-19). This destroys the unity of the Church. That is why the Holy Spirit has cautioned through Paul, “your faith should not be in the wisdom of men but in the power of God” (1 Corinthians 2:5). When a Believer falls for Satan’s trick of overly trusting and relying upon a person and his wisdom, then he not only develops an undue faith in that person but also starts exalting that preacher’s words over God’s Word. Because then he falls into the tendency to see, interpret, and understand God’s Word only in the manner that his favorite preacher presents it. Now, if some other members of the Church do not agree with this, or do not see it in the same manner as that Believer does, then these differences of opinion lead to groups being formed, which deteriorate to factions, bitterness, and eventually to divisions in the Church. The way to prevent it is to follow what Paul wrote in 1 Corinthians 2:5, and we should follow it. We must let man be man - prone to be fallible, and unknowingly be misled by Satan, and thereby mislead others too. We must leave our control and handling only in the hands of the Lord and His Word, not any man’s hands, or under man’s concepts.

In the next article we will look at some instructions given by Paul to his protégé Timothy in this regard.

If you have not yet accepted the discipleship of the Lord, make your decision in favor of the Lord Jesus now to ensure your eternal life and heavenly blessings. Where there is obedience to the Lord, where there is respect and obedience to His Word, there is also the blessing and protection of the Lord. Voluntarily repenting of your sins, and asking the Lord Jesus for forgiveness of your sins; voluntarily and sincerely surrendering yourself to Him - is the only way to salvation and heavenly life.
