Church Stewardship - Practical Implications – 11

All Born-Again Christian Believers, at the moment of their salvation, are made a part of God’s Church and are placed by God in fellowship of His other children. For these, and other privileges given by God at salvation, every Believer is a steward of God and is also accountable to Him for fulfilling his stewardship worthily. As stewards of God’s Church and of the fellowship of His children, the Believers are to be involved in the growth of the Church and spiritual progress of God’s other children. For this, as we have learnt in the past few articles, the role of the ministry of God’s Word is of paramount importance. Those entrusted with the ministry of God’s Word are to serve God’s Word to the Church and God’s children regularly, adequately, and properly – both in quality as well quantity. In the recent articles we have seen some aspects of this ministry. In the last article we saw from Paul’s summary of his ministry in Ephesus that he, under the guidance of the Holy Spirit, had unhesitatingly declared to them the whole counsel of God. Therefore, when he went from Ephesus to Macedonia, he left Timothy behind to ensure that those who preach and teach there, should not teach anything other than what Paul had taught. We saw the salient features of Paul’s ministry in Ephesus, which provide a scriptural guideline for us today to follow, especially for those engaged in the ministry of God’s Word. Today we will consider some more Biblical instructions in context of the Word ministry; instructions that help the Church to grow and the Believers to progress in their spiritual lives.

We have seen some very important aspects of the ministry of God’s Word for the growth and progress of the Church and the Believers from 1 Timothy 1:3-4 in the recent articles. There is another important instruction that must also be taken note of; it is stated later in Paul's first letter to Timothy. In 1 Timothy 4:6, while giving instructions to Timothy through the Holy Spirit, Paul asks him to instruct others about that which has been given i.e., has been taught or instructed to him. Through our study of 1 Timothy 1:3-4 in the previous two articles, we have already seen and understood why Paul is asking Timothy to do this. But here, in 1 Timothy 4:6, we see another benefit, for the preacher, of sincerely preaching and teaching God’s pure Word in its truth and entirety, under the guidance of the Holy Spirit.

It is written here that by doing this “you will be a good minister of Jesus Christ, nourished in the words of faith and of the good doctrine which you have carefully followed.” In other words, Paul is pointing out to Timothy that when he faithfully instructs others about God’s pure Word, and he himself also takes care to carefully continue to follow the ‘good doctrine’ that he is preaching and teaching to others, it will contribute to his own spiritual growth and stability. So, here we have a two-fold benefit of being “a good minister of Jesus Christ” i.e., sincerely and honestly ministering God’s Word, instead of being a minister of man’s word, instead of ministering fables and genealogies contrived by man. These two benefits are, firstly it will cause the growth and progress of the Church and the Believers; and secondly, it will cause such a preacher and teacher to himself be “nourished in the words of faith and of the good doctrine” which he shares and also carefully follows. The lesson is, for the Believer’s own spiritual growth, they should sincerely and honestly teach others the true and unadulterated Word of God.

As one goes through both these letters of instructions written by Paul to Timothy, we see that nowhere does he ask or encourage him to use his own wisdom and understanding about this ministry. Rather, Paul only asks and repeatedly emphasizes upon him to instruct others about what he has already received, has already been instructed about. Timothy had mainly learned these things through his association with Paul. And we have seen earlier that Paul always preached, taught, and instructed nothing out of his own knowledge, wisdom, and understanding, but only what he received from the Lord, what he had through the inspiration of the Holy Spirit. This instruction of Paul to Timothy is very similar to what the Lord Jesus had instructed His disciples at the time of His ascension, in the Great Commission (Matthew 28:18-20) – the disciples had to preach and teach only that which the Lord had taught them, and do so under the power of the Holy Spirit (Acts 1:8). Since their obedience to the Lord’s instructions was essential, therefore, by implication, they were not to practice, preach, or teach anything that they contrived through their own wisdom and understanding.

In his second letter to Timothy, Paul also asks him to be one who rightly divides God's Word (2 Timothy 2:14-17). For any person this discernment can only come through being dependent upon the Holy Spirit, since, as the Believer’s Helper, one of the functions of the Holy Spirit is to teach and expound God’s Word to them (John 14:26; 16:13; 1 Corinthians 2:10-14). It is a sad and a very difficult to understand bitter fact of Christianity, that in the Churches or Assemblies and amongst Believers, there is an inordinate but prevalent tendency for Believers to rely more upon men, men’s teachings, words, and writings, and often even on men’s fables, than upon the Holy Spirit of God to learn God’s Word and its practical implications and application in life. And, this tendency manifests itself in many ways in the life of Believers, e.g., as following men, as in blind faith copying the words, phrases, and mannerisms of men without cross-checking and examining them, as forming factions in the Church; causing and maintaining divisions in the Church and amongst Believers; ignoring the God given methods and the Biblical instructions for the functioning of the Church and instead following man-made rules, regulations and instructions; putting man before God in taking decisions; of trying to be a man-pleaser rather than a God pleaser; of being more afraid of man than of God etc. It sooner or later leads to various problems in the Believer’s own lives, in the Church, and in fellowship amongst God’s children.

If we, for whatever reasons, are unable to contribute to the growth and progress of the Church and the Believers; then the least we can do is not in any way preach and teach things that contribute to disunity and divisions in the Church. For this, all that we need to do is to stop following persons and copying their words, and actually start following God and obeying His Word. Paul through the Holy Spirit, has set himself as an example of following the Lord; and wants that others too should follow the Lord in the same manner as he was doing, since what he was preaching and teaching was not something he had devised, but what he had received from the Lord for the Believers and Church of the Lord (1 Corinthians 11:1; 1 Thessalonians 4:1-2).

From the next article we will start considering the role of the Church Elders and some aspects of enforcing discipline in the Church.

If you have not yet accepted the discipleship of the Lord, make your decision in favor of the Lord Jesus now to ensure your eternal life and heavenly blessings. Where there is obedience to the Lord, where there is respect and obedience to His Word, there is also the blessing and protection of the Lord. Voluntarily repent of your sins, and ask the Lord Jesus to forgive your sins; voluntarily and sincerely, surrender yourself to Him - this is the only way to salvation and heavenly life. You only have to say a short but sincere prayer to the Lord Jesus Christ willingly and with a penitent heart, and at the same time completely commit and submit your life to Him. You can also make this prayer and submission in words something like, “Lord Jesus, I am sorry for my sins and repent of them. I thank you for taking my sins upon yourself, paying for them through your life.  Because of them you died on the cross in my place, were buried, and you rose again from the grave on the third day for my salvation, and today you are the living Lord God and have freely provided to me the forgiveness, and redemption from my sins, through faith in you. Please forgive my sins, take me under your care, and make me your disciple. I submit my life into your hands." Your one prayer from a sincere and committed heart will make your present and future life, in this world and in the hereafter, heavenly and blessed for eternity.

The Church, or, Assembly of Christ Jesus - 58

English Translation

The Ministry of Teachers (1)

Since the past few articles, we have been seeing from Ephesians 4:11 that for the works and functioning of His Church, the Lord Jesus has set some ministries and appointed some workers for those ministries. We have seen that these ministries are related to the ministry of God’s Word in the Churches. We have also seen that just as the Lord Jesus served as a Teacher, an Evangelist, and through other ministries as well, and so did the Apostles in the first Church, similarly one person can serve in more than one ministry. In the last article we had seen about the fifth ministry and its workers, the Teachers and Preachers. Today, from God’s Word, we will look about the Biblical way of teaching God’s Word, and the effects the correct teachings of God’s Word have on the lives of the people.

Let us consider some examples from the Bible:

* When the Lord Jesus taught the people, it was not as the Pharisees and the Scribes used to do; He taught with authority (Matthew 7:28-29; Mark 1:22; Luke 4:32). In other words, the Lord Jesus did not give them any “bookish” teachings or teachings through any human knowledge, but taught with a deep and proper understanding of God’s Word with a sense of being deeply rooted in it. But He also taught them according to the level of understanding of the people - how much and what all they could grasp (Mark 4:33-34). Every Christian Teacher of God’s Word should teach bearing these things in mind.

* Paul reminded the Church or Assembly in Corinth, how he taught them, And I, brethren, when I came to you, did not come with excellence of speech or of wisdom declaring to you the testimony of God. And my speech and my preaching were not with persuasive words of human wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power, that your faith should not be in the wisdom of men but in the power of God (1 Corinthians 2:1, 4-5). In other words, under the guidance of the Holy Spirit, the gospel and teachings given by Paul, who was well-learned and very knowledgeable about the Scriptures, were with the power of the Spirit, did not contain any worldly knowledge, nor was it to show-off his own knowledge. Paul never added anything to God’s Word from his own side, nor did he attempt to make the teachings entertaining and attractive through adding frivolous and worldly things. Paul only brought forth the truth of God’s Word, and left it for the Holy Spirit to do the rest amongst the people (2 Corinthians 4:2, 6).

* Similarly, to the Church in Thessalonica, Paul wrote, For our gospel did not come to you in word only, but also in power, and in the Holy Spirit and in much assurance, as you know what kind of men we were among you for your sake. And you became followers of us and of the Lord, having received the word in much affliction, with joy of the Holy Spirit (1 Thessalonians 1:5-6). Here too we see that the teaching of God’s Word by Paul was not casual or according to the ways and knowledge of the world, but through the power of the Holy Spirit in much firmness or assurance. We also see that the Thessalonian Believers had to suffer problems and persecutions in obeying God’s Word, but they also received the joy of the Holy Spirit, their lives were changed, and they sincerely started to follow the Lord - which was the proof of their having received true and factual teachings, from God.

In the next article we will see some more examples and related references of giving the pure teachings of God's Word, and of the effects this has on man's life.

If you have not yet accepted the discipleship of the Lord Jesus, then take a decision in its favor now to secure your eternal life and heavenly blessings. The Lord's security and blessings are present where there is obedience of the Lord, where His Word is honored and followed. If you are still not Born Again, have not obtained salvation, or have not asked the Lord Jesus for forgiveness for your sins, then you have the time and opportunity to do so right now. Ask the Lord Jesus to forgive your sins, and voluntarily and sincerely surrender yourselves into His hands - this is the only way to salvation and heavenly life. All you have to do is say a short prayer, voluntarily and with a sincere heart, with heartfelt repentance for your sins, and a fully submissive attitude. You can do this in this manner, “Lord Jesus, I confess that I have disobeyed You, and have knowingly or unknowingly, in mind, in thought, in attitude, and in deeds, committed sins. I believe that you have fully borne the punishment of my sins by your sacrifice on the cross, and have paid the full price of those sins for all eternity. Please forgive my sins, change my heart and mind towards you, and make me your disciple, take me with you." God longs for your company and wants to see you blessed, but to make this possible, is your personal decision. One prayer said with a sincere and surrendered heart will turn your present and future, your life here on earth and in the next world, forever and make you heavenly and blessed. Will you not say this prayer now, while you have the time and opportunity to do so? The decision is yours.

Things Related to Practical Christian Living – 98

Christian Living and Observing the Law (3)

We are considering and learning things related to practical Christian living from Acts chapter 15. In the previous articles we have seen that Satan had started to corrupt and change the gospel of salvation and reconciliation with God through believing in the sacrifice of the Lord Jesus made on the Cross of Calvary, His resurrection from the dead, and the forgiveness of sins through the grace of God. Satan did this through the Christian Believers, by making them misunderstand and misuse the Scriptures, beguiling and deceiving them about being “obedient to the Word.” Satan also deceived them into adding the observance of the God given Law to the gospel to be righteous and acceptable to God. At that time many people fell into this deception and got misled into the wrong way, and today also many others are doing the same. Most Christians believe that by observing and fulfilling the rules, rituals, and traditions made and established by their sect or denomination, they become righteous in the eyes of God and acceptable to Him; and according to their understanding, this is obeying the gospel and believing to be saved, but it is an absolutely wrong belief. Along with this, some people have started to revert to emphasizing on obeying and fulfilling the Law. But the discussion given in Acts 15, its conclusion, and the decision taken by the Elders in the Church at Jerusalem under the guidance of the Holy Spirit, which was then conveyed to all the other churches makes it clear that other than obeying and following the gospel in its original form (1 Corinthians 15:1-4), there is no other way of being righteous in the eyes of God and acceptable to Him. Whatever else is added to this original gospel will only corrupt it, even if that which is being added has been taken from the Scriptures, and will make the one doing the addition cursed, not blessed. Along with this, the Elders in Jerusalem, gave instructions for those who had come into the Christian faith from the Gentiles, to adopt a behavior and life-style consistent with the Christian living, and leave four things which they had been doing till coming into the Christian faith. From today, we will start considering these four things.

The Church in Jerusalem, which was the first Church, and in a way the “mother-Church” was where the disciples of the Lord, the Apostles, and other Elders and church leaders were. Their priority was to pray and the ministry of the Word (Acts 6:4); and the things related to disputes, misunderstandings and difficulties related to Christian faith and living were brought to them for resolution. Therefore, the issue of obeying the Law in practical Christian living was also brought to them, when it could not be resolved at the local level. After the issue had been resolved, those Elders asked the Gentile converts in the churches to give up on four things which they had been doing since before. These four things were, to abstain from things polluted by idols (things offered to idols), from sexual immorality, from things strangled, and from blood (Acts 15:20, 29). These things forbidden by the Elders, bring to mind the third of the three things said by Peter in his first sermon – to save themselves from this perverse generation, i.e., to separate themselves from the world and the things of the world (Acts 2:40). The Apostle Paul also wrote about the necessity of this separation and change in his second letter to the Corinthians “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new” (2 Corinthians 5:17). The Apostle John, in his first letter said to the Christian Believers “Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him” (1 John 2:15). In other words, after claiming to have come into the Christian faith, still continuing to love the world, the things of the world, things related to the ‘old man’ is an indicator that the person does not love God. The implication is that possibly he might not really be Born Again. James, the brother of the Lord Jesus said it in even sharper words in his letter “Adulterers and adulteresses! Do you not know that friendship with the world is enmity with God? Whoever therefore wants to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God” (James 4:4). The overall evident conclusion is that having come into Christian faith, there should be an evident change in the behavior and living of the Christian Believer, that shows him separate from the world and the people of the world, and a clear and easy measure of this change is “Therefore, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God” (1 Corinthians 10:31). As the Lord Jesus has shown from His example and has said, God is glorified by being obedient to Him, by following His Word (John 17:4).

Of the four things given in Acts 15:20, 29, from which the Christian Believers are to separate themselves, i.e., from things polluted by idols (things offered to idols), from sexual immorality, from things strangled, and from blood, it is apparent that the first two (things polluted by idols and sexual immorality) are a disobeying of part of the Ten Commandments, and the third and fourth things (things strangled, and blood) are two forms of one things, i.e., eating blood. In the Law given by God through Moses, eating of blood and anything with blood has been forbidden (Leviticus 3:17; 7:26; 17:10, 14; 19:26). In an animal strangled to death, it would not be possible for its blood to flow out, therefore in eating an animal killed in this manner the possibility of eating something with the blood will remain, therefore, it was forbidden.

Now, this raises a question here that on the one hand after a lot of debate and discussion, under the guidance of the Holy Spirit, it has been decided and instructed that there is no need to observe and follow the Law. But then, on the other hand, some things from the Law are being stated as mandatory and everyone is to observe and follow the related instructions. Does this not show a contradiction, an arbitrariness in implementing God’s Word?

We have seen in the earlier articles that to avoid any misinterpretations and misunderstandings related to God’s Word, it should always be considered in its immediate as well as remote, both contexts. Only then the reality of the thing becomes clear. We should also take note that the best clarification of an issue related to God’s Word always comes from within God’s Word itself. On the basis of these things, in the next article we will see about this apparent contradiction and arbitrariness, and see how correct and precise God’s Word is.

If you have not yet accepted the discipleship of the Lord, make your decision in favor of the Lord Jesus now to ensure your eternal life and heavenly blessings. Where there is obedience to the Lord, where there is respect and obedience to His Word, there is also the blessing and protection of the Lord. Repenting of your sins, and asking the Lord Jesus for forgiveness of your sins, voluntarily and sincerely, surrendering yourself to Him - is the only way to salvation and heavenly life.

At the beginning of this series on Growth Through God’s Word we had seen that it is essential for every Christian Believer to know, read, and study the whole Word of God. The more he is established in the Word of God, the more edified and better will his Christian life be, the more he will grow in the nearness of God, the more useful will he be for God, and more blessed will he be – in this life, as well as the next. We had also seen that there are three kinds or categories of teachings in God’s Word the Bible, which have particularly been shown to be associated with the edification and growth of the Christian Believers and the churches. These categories are, teachings related to repentance, salvation, and God’s Kingdom; the teachings related to the six elementary principles given in Hebrews 6:1-2; and the things related to practical Christian living given in Acts chapters 2 and 15. To learn their original form, God’s instructions about them, and the way they were followed and practiced in the initial Church, we had begun to see and learn about these three categories of teachings, directly from God’s Word the Bible; to see and learn directly from the examples and references given in the Bible, instead of learning about them from the teachings given by men, or the teachings of various denominations and sects. In the past 250 articles, on this basis, we have considered the first two categories, and then started on the third category, i.e., teachings related to practical Christian living, and we are on it even now. Having seen, understood, and learnt from the seven teachings given in Acts chapter 2, from today we will begin with things given in Acts chapter 15. The readers are requested to please read this chapter at least once, so that it becomes easier to understand what is being said. Today we will see a summary of the chapter here.

Acts chapter 15 begins with a dispute. For the background to the dispute, we will have to consider the preceding few verses, i.e., Acts 14:26-28, where some things related to the ministry of Paul and Barnabas have been mentioned. In brief, Paul and Barnabas, returned to Antioch from their ministry journey (verse 26), they called the Church together, and gave them an account of their ministry (verse 27), and they continued with the disciples of the Lord for a long time (verse 28). After this, it is written in Acts 15:1 that some men came there from Judea, which is in Israel, and started telling the “brothers” i.e., the Christian Believers, that not only should they believe in the Lord Jesus, but according to the custom of Moses, they should also be circumcised, only then will their salvation be completed and accepted. Then we see in verses 2-4 that Paul and Barnabas had had a big argument with them about this, but the matter was not resolved. Eventually, it was decided that the matter will be referred to Jerusalem, where the Lord’s disciples, the Apostles, and other Elders and leaders of the Assembly were, and the matter will be discussed there; then whatever be the decision it will be accepted by all, and will be applicable to all the Assemblies.

When the matter was placed before the disciples of the Lord, the Apostles, and other leaders of the Church, those Believers who had come from amongst the Pharisees, not only insisted on circumcision being done, but also added that the Law of Moses should also be followed. So, the Apostles and the Elders gathered together to discuss this matter and come to a conclusion (verses 5-6). After much dispute and discussion, Peter, on the basis of his ministry amongst the Gentiles and the experiences related to the observance of the Law, explained how circumcision and following the Law were vain, and salvation is only through faith in the Lord Jesus; all those gathered, understood, the dispute settled, the matter was resolved (verses 7-12). After this, James, the brother of the Lord Jesus, on the basis of what Peter had said, and from the Scriptures, reviewed and summarized the matter, and gave the decision that those who are turning to the Lord from the Gentiles, there is no need to impose anything else upon them. Their having accepted the Lord and believed in Him was sufficient for their salvation (verse 13-21). But at the same time, they should stop doing four things that they had been practicing as non-believers (verse 20).

After this, possibly to affirm that Paul and Barnabas, based on their beliefs, had not simply cooked up this conclusion on their own, the Elders in the Church at Jerusalem, wrote the things in a letter and through Judas Barsabas and Silas, the leaders of the Jerusalem Church, had it delivered to the Church in Antioch (verses 22-31). Moreover, as is written in verse 28, this decision by the Elders in Jerusalem, was not just their own, but was reached under the guidance of the Holy Spirit, i.e., was from God. After this, Paul once again set out on his missionary journey, and as is written in Acts 16:4-5, he also told these things that had been decided by the  Elders of Jerusalem under the guidance of the Holy Spirit as decrees to be kept; the result was that the churches were strengthened and grew in numbers “And as they went through the cities, they delivered to them the decrees to keep, which were determined by the apostles and elders at Jerusalem. So, the churches were strengthened in the faith, and increased in number daily.”

In the next article we will see more on this topic from here onwards.
