प्रभु की मेज़ - मूल सिद्धान्तों पर लौटें; स्वयं को जाँचें

 

हमने पिछले लेखों में देखा है कि पाप कलीसिया में अपने घातक परिणाम ले आया, और शैतान को कलीसिया को विभाजित करने, उसमें तबाही मचाने का अवसर मिल गया। उसके प्रभाव में आकर लोग कलीसिया को तुच्छ जान रहे थे, प्रभु की मेज़ के दुरुपयोग और गलत समझ रखने के द्वारा प्रभु भोज का अपमान कर रहे थे, किन्तु उन्हें लगता था कि वे ठीक हैं और भक्ति का जीवन बिता रहे हैं। गलतियों को सुधारने के लिए, पवित्र आत्मा, पौलुस के द्वारा, उन्हें प्रभु यीशु के द्वारा प्रभु भोज के आरंभ किए जाने पर लेकर जाता है, और उनके सामने प्रभु द्वारा उसे स्थापित करने को दोहराता है, जिससे वे मेज़ के सही स्वरूप को जान और समझ सकें और उसका अनुसरण उसी प्रकार से करने लगें, जिस स्वरूप में प्रभु ने उसे स्थापित किया था। यह माना जाता है कि पौलुस ने यह पत्री लगभग 59 ईसवी में लिखी थी, अर्थात, प्रभु के मारे जाने और जी उठने के लगभग 25-26 वर्ष के बाद। इसलिए प्रभु की मेज़ के स्थापित किए जाने को दोहराना, सुसमाचारों में दिए गए इसके वर्णन की पुष्टि और अनुमोदन करता है, क्योंकि यहाँ पर भी वैसा ही वर्णन दिया गया है जैसा सुसमाचारों में लिखा हुआ है। हम 1 कुरिन्थियों 11:23-25 से देखते हैं कि “प्रभु यीशु ने जिस रात वह पकड़वाया गया” (पद 23) प्रभु भोज की स्थापना की, और यही हम सुसमाचारों में भी लिखा हुआ पाते हैं। साथ ही यह फसह के भोजन से भिन्न था, जैसा कि यहाँ पर भी लिखा हुआ है कि प्रभु ने यह “बियारी के पीछे” (पद 25) अर्थात मुख्य भोजन के बाद किया था। यहाँ पर भी प्रभु द्वारा रोटी और दाख रस के कटोरे के लिए एक-वचन में ही बताया गया है, एक रोटी, एक कटोरा; जो इस बात का भी संकेत है कि यह केवल प्रतीक के रूप में था, संपूर्ण भोजन करना नहीं, जैसा पद 25-26 में लिखा है, प्रभु यीशु के बलिदान की यादगारी में।

 

यह हमारे सामने परमेश्वर के वचन में से, परमेश्वर द्वारा दी गई एक विधि को लाता है, जो मसीही विश्वासियों के लिए अपने जीवनों को जाँचने और सुधारने, तथा कलीसिया को ठीक रखने के लिए है - लौट कर मूल या आरंभ पर जाओ, देखो और समझो कि परमेश्वर ने पहली बार बात को कैसे, किस रीति से किया था। वर्तमान में जो हो रहा है उसकी तुलना आरंभिक के साथ करो, और फिर परमेश्वर द्वारा किए गए के अनुसार उसे सुधारो और ठीक करो। हमने इससे पहले दिसंबर 26 के लेख में देखा था कि परमेश्वर अपनी आराधना से संबंधित बातों के लिए बहुत विशिष्ट है, और उसे केवल वही स्वीकार्य है जो उसने कहा है, और वह भी केवल वैसे ही जैसे उसने कहा है, अन्य कुछ भी नहीं। इसलिए जो कुछ भी परमेश्वर द्वारा निर्धारित करके दिए गए नमूने से भिन्न है, उससे भटक गया है, वह परमेश्वर को अस्वीकार्य है, और उसे परमेश्वर को स्वीकार्य बनाने तथा फिर से आशीष का कारण बनने के लिए उसी स्वरूप में लाना पड़ेगा जो परमेश्वर ने बनाकर दिया था, बताया था।

परमेश्वर के वचन में इस बात का केवल यही एक उदाहरण नहीं है। इससे थोड़ा आगे 1 कुरिन्थियों 15:1-4 में हम देखते हैं कि इस पत्री के समापन की ओर आते हुए, पौलुस, पवित्र आत्मा की अगुवाई में उनके सामने मूल सुसमाचार संदेश को दोहराता है। इस पूरी पत्री में पौलुस उन्हें उनकी गलतियाँ दिखाता और उन्हें सुधारने के तरीके बताता आया है। और अब, एक संक्षिप्त सामान्य समीक्षा के रूप में, पवित्र आत्मा पौलुस को निर्देशित करता है कि उन्हें दिखाए कि उनकी सभी गलतियों का मूल कारण, मूल समस्या है कि उन्होंने सुसमाचार, जो उनके उद्धार और प्रभु के लोग बनकर उसके साथ जुड़े रहने का आधार है, के आधारभूत स्वरूप की अवहेलना करना आरंभ कर दिया है। क्योंकि वे सुसमाचार के तथ्यों और तात्पर्यों से भटक गए हैं, इसलिए बजाए प्रभु की ओर देखते रहने के, वे मनुष्यों की ओर देखने और उनकी सुनने वाले बन गए है, जिससे फिर शैतान को अवसर मिल गया है कि वह उनके मध्य गलत शिक्षाएं और झूठे सिद्धांत फैलाए। गलातिया के मण्डली को लिखी गई अपनी पत्री में (गलातियों 2:1-10)। पौलुस कहता है कि वह “ईश्वरीय प्रकाश के अनुसार” यरूशलेम गया था, अर्थात, परमेश्वर के कहने पर, कि यरूशलेम जाकर वहाँ पर अगुवों के साथ उस सुसमाचार को साझा करे जिसका प्रचार वह अन्य-जातियों के मध्य करता था, और उसकी समीक्षा करवाए। यद्यपि जो प्रचार वह करता था उसमें कुछ भी कमी या गलती नहीं निकली (2:6), लेकिन फिर भी परमेश्वर की ओर से यह तय किया गया कि समीक्षा की जाए। लेकिन इससे पौलुस और बरनबास को न केवल यरूशलेम में कलीसिया के अगुवों से अनुमोदन और समर्थन प्राप्त हो गया, बल्कि उन्हें उन लोगों का समर्थन और सहभागिता भी प्राप्त हुई।

 

इसी प्रकार से, प्रेरितों 2 में, पवित्र आत्मा प्राप्त करने के पश्चात, पतरस जब यरूशलेम में एकत्रित हुए भक्त यहूदियों के सामने खड़े होकर, जो हो रहा था उसके बारे में उनके असमंजस और कौतूहल के निवारण के लिए बोलना आरंभ करता है, तब उनके सामने पवित्र शास्त्र में से संबंधित बातों और भविष्यवाणियों को लेकर आता है; अर्थात, परमेश्वर द्वारा उद्धार से संबंधित मूल बातों और भविष्यवाणियों को उन्हें स्मरण करवाता है। जब वह यह करता है तब लोगों के हृदय छिद जाते हैं, पतरस उनके सामने सुसमाचार को रखता है और 3000 लोग उद्धार पाते हैं। जब स्तिफनुस को ईश-निन्दा के झूठे आरोप लगाकर पकड़ा जाता है और यहूदियों के धर्म के अगुवों की सभा के सामने न्याय के लिए प्रस्तुत किया जाता है (यहूदियों 6:10-15), तब अपने पक्ष और बचाव को प्रस्तुत करते समय, प्रेरितों 7 में, स्तिफनुस उनके सामने इस्राएल के आरंभ से उनका इतिहास रखता है और दिखाता है कि किस प्रकार वे बारंबार परमेश्वर के वचन और मार्गों से भटकते रहे और गलतियाँ करते रहे, और उसी प्रवृत्ति के अंतर्गत उन्होंने प्रतिज्ञा और भविष्यवाणियां किए हुए मसीहा को भी मार डाला (प्रेरितों 7:51-53)। अर्थात, स्तिफनुस उन्हें उनके विश्वास और परमेश्वर के साथ संबंध की आधारभूत बातों पर लेकर जाता है और उनकी गलतियों को, परमेश्वर के वचन और मार्गों से भटकते रहने को, प्रकट करता है। ऐसी ही एक घटना यहोशू की पुस्तक के 7 अध्याय में भी दर्ज है; ऐ में इस्राएलियों की बहुत शर्मनाक और अनपेक्षित हार हुई थी, यहोशू इसके कारण बदहाल होकर परमेश्वर के सामने गिड़गिड़ाता है, उससे पूछता है कि ऐसा क्यों हुआ? प्रभु उसे सीधा उत्तर देकर दोषी व्यक्ति का नाम बता सकता था, किन्तु इसकी बजाए परमेश्वर यहोशू 7:14 में एक विधि देता है, समस्याओं के कारण को समझने और पहचानने की - मूल या आधारभूत बात से आरंभ कर के, बारी-बारी से हर एक बात को जाँचते और आँकलन करते चले जाओ, जब तक कि समस्या का कारण सामने न आ जाए। यहोशू परमेश्वर की विधि को कार्यान्वित करता है (यहोशू 7:16-18), और उनकी हार के लिए दोषी व्यक्ति प्रकट हो जाता है। आकान और उसके परिवार के पास अवसर था कि वे अपने पाप को मान लें, विशेषकर जब वे देख रहे थे कि बात उनकी ओर ही बढ़ रही है, किन्तु उन्होंने ऐसा नहीं किया, अपने अवसर को गँवा दिया, और अन्ततः परिणाम भुगतना पड़ा। अब, यहोशू पर कोई भी पक्षपात का या गलती कर देने का दोष नहीं लगा सकता था, और आकान के पास भी बचने का कोई मार्ग नहीं बचा था, उसे अपनी गलती को मानना और भुगतना ही पड़ा।

 

परमेश्वर ने अपने वचन में हमें अपनी विधि दी है जिससे हम अपने जीवनों को गलतियों से बचाकर रखें और परमेश्वर के वचन से भटकने से बचे रहें - समय-समय पर अपने जीवन, व्यवहार, रवैये, और परमेश्वर की आज्ञाकारिता की स्थिति का आँकलन करते रहें। प्रभु की मेज़ हमें यह अवसर प्रदान करती है कि हम प्रार्थना के साथ, प्रभु की उपस्थिति में, उसकी सहायता से, मेज़ में भाग लेने से पहले अपने जीवनों को जाँच लें। प्रभु जो भी पाप, गलतियाँ, कमियां-कमज़ोरियाँ हमारे सामने लाए, उन्हें मान कर, स्वीकार कर के, उनके लिए क्षमा मांग कर, फिर योग्य रीति से प्रभु की मेज़ में भाग लें, प्रभु से आशीष पाएं। हमारे द्वारा सुसमाचार की मूल, आधारभूत बातों की ओर लौट कर आना और उनके अनुसार आपने जीवन को जाँचना, हमें प्रभु के निकट और घनिष्ठ संगति में बनाए रखने में बहुत सहायक होगा, और हमें शैतान और उसकी युक्तियों से, उसके चंगुल में फँसने से बचाए रखेगा।

 

यदि आप एक मसीही विश्वासी हैं, और प्रभु की मेज़ में भाग लेते रहे हैं, तो कृपया अपने जीवन को जाँच कर देख लें कि आप वास्तव में पापों से छुड़ाए गए हैं तथा आप ने अपना जीवन प्रभु की आज्ञाकारिता में जीने के लिए उस को समर्पित किया है। आपके लिए यह अनिवार्य है कि आप परमेश्वर के वचन की सही शिक्षाओं को जानने के द्वारा एक परिपक्व विश्वासी बनें, तथा सभी शिक्षाओं को वचन की कसौटी पर परखने, और बेरिया के विश्वासियों के समान, लोगों की बातों को पहले वचन से जाँचने और उनकी सत्यता को निश्चित करने के बाद ही उनको स्वीकार करने और मानने वाले बनें (प्रेरितों 17:11; 1 थिस्सलुनीकियों 5:21)। अन्यथा शैतान द्वारा छोड़े हुए झूठे प्रेरित और भविष्यद्वक्ता मसीह के सेवक बन कर (2 कुरिन्थियों 11:13-15) अपनी ठग विद्या और चतुराई से आपको प्रभु के लिए अप्रभावी कर देंगे और आप के मसीही जीवन एवं आशीषों का नाश कर देंगे।

  

यदि आपने प्रभु की शिष्यता को अभी तक स्वीकार नहीं किया है, तो अपने अनन्त जीवन और स्वर्गीय आशीषों को सुनिश्चित करने के लिए अभी प्रभु यीशु के पक्ष में अपना निर्णय कर लीजिए। जहाँ प्रभु की आज्ञाकारिता है, उसके वचन की बातों का आदर और पालन है, वहाँ प्रभु की आशीष और सुरक्षा भी है। प्रभु यीशु से अपने पापों के लिए क्षमा माँगकर, स्वेच्छा से तथा सच्चे मन से अपने आप को उसकी अधीनता में समर्पित कर दीजिए - उद्धार और स्वर्गीय जीवन का यही एकमात्र मार्ग है। आपको स्वेच्छा और सच्चे मन से प्रभु यीशु मसीह से केवल एक छोटी प्रार्थना करनी है, और साथ ही अपना जीवन उसे पूर्णतः समर्पित करना है। आप यह प्रार्थना और समर्पण कुछ इस प्रकार से भी कर सकते हैं, “प्रभु यीशु मैं आपका धन्यवाद करता हूँ कि आपने मेरे पापों की क्षमा और समाधान के लिए उन पापों को अपने ऊपर लिया, उनके कारण मेरे स्थान पर क्रूस की मृत्यु सही, गाड़े गए, और मेरे उद्धार के लिए आप तीसरे दिन जी भी उठे, और आज जीवित प्रभु परमेश्वर हैं। कृपया मेरे पापों को क्षमा करें, मुझे अपनी शरण में लें, और मुझे अपना शिष्य बना लें। मैं अपना जीवन आप के हाथों में समर्पित करता हूँ।” सच्चे और समर्पित मन से की गई आपकी एक प्रार्थना आपके वर्तमान तथा भविष्य को, इस लोक के और परलोक के जीवन को, अनन्तकाल के लिए स्वर्गीय एवं आशीषित बना देगी।

English Translation

The Lord’s Table - Back to Basics & Self-Examination

We have seen in the previous articles that sin had brought its disastrous consequences into the Church, and provided Satan the way to break up the Church, wreak havoc in it. Under its influence people were despising the Church, and denigrating the Lord’s Table by misusing and mishandling it, while thinking they were okay and behaving in a godly manner. To rectify the errors, the Holy Spirit through Paul, takes them back to the initiation of the Holy Communion by the Lord Jesus, and recounts to them the manner in which the Lord established the Communion, so that they could then emulate it, do it in the proper manner, as established by the Lord. It is believed that Paul wrote this letter in A.D. 59, i.e., about 25-26 years after the death and resurrection of the Lord Jesus. Therefore, this recounting of the institution of the Lord’s Table, serves to affirm and authenticate the Gospel accounts, since the details remain the same. We see from 1 Corinthians 11:23-25 that the Lord established the Holy Communion “on the same night in which He was betrayed” (verse 23), and as we have seen from the Gospel accounts, it was not the same as the Passover meal, as it says here it was done “after supper” (verse 25), and it was done using the elements of the Passover. Also, the Lord took a bread and a cup of grape juice, here too, stated in singular, again affirming that whenever the disciples participated in the Lord’s Table, it was not to be done as a full-fledged meal, but in a symbolic manner, as is written here in the text of verses 25-26, to be done in remembrance of the Lord’s sacrifice.

This brings before us a God given method, recorded in His Word, for checking and correcting errors in the life of the Believers and functioning of the Church - go back to the initiation, see how God did it or had it done the first time, compare with what is happening now, and then take the remedial measures to restore what God had said and done. We had seen in an earlier article of December 26 that God is very particular about His worship and only what He has said, what He has ordained, is acceptable to Him, nothing else. Therefore, anything that has deviated away from God’s established pattern and method, has become unacceptable to the Lord, will have to be restored back to its God ordained form and manner for it to become acceptable to the Lord and again become a source of blessings.

This is not the only instance of such a pattern being given or used in God’s Word. A little later, in 1 Corinthians 15:1-4, as he comes towards concluding this letter, through the Holy Spirit, Paul recounts to them the basic Gospel. Throughout this letter, from the very beginning, he has been pointing out to them their errors and the way to correct them. Now as a general summation of it all, the Holy Spirit directs Paul to show them that the basic problem with them is that they have started overlooking the basic Gospel, the basis of their salvation and association with the Lord as His people. Since they had deviated away from the fact and implications of the Gospel, therefore, instead of looking to the Lord, they had started to look up to men and listen to them, providing Satan an opportunity to spread wrong teachings and false doctrines amongst them. In his letter to the Galatians (Galatians 2:1-10), Paul says that he went “by revelation” i.e., under instructions from God, to Jerusalem to share with them, to have a review with the elders in Jerusalem about the gospel he was preaching amongst the Gentiles. Although there was nothing wrong found in what he was preaching (2:6), but yet God deemed it necessary that a review be done. But this also provided an opportunity for Paul and Barnabas to not only have the approval but also the support and fellowship of the Church elders in Jerusalem.

 

Similarly, in Acts 2, after receiving the Holy Spirit, when Peter stands up to address the devout Jews gathered in Jerusalem for the feasts to clear their confusion and curiosity about what was happening, Peter recounts to them from their Scriptures the pertinent prophecies recorded by God, i.e., takes them back to the basics of the prophecies related to salvation written in the Scriptures. As he does so, the people are convicted in their hearts and Peter presents the Gospel to them, and 3000 are saved. When Stephen is caught on trumped up charges of blasphemy, and is brought before the council of the Jewish religious leaders to be judged (Acts 6:10-15), then, in putting up his defense, in Acts 7, Stephen recounts to them the history of Israel from its inception, to show them how they have repeatedly erred from the Word and ways of God, and in that same error have crucified the promised and prophesied Messiah (Acts 7:51-53); i.e., Stephen takes them back to the basics of their faith and relationship with God to expose their deviating from God’s Word and falling away from God’s ways. A similar instance is recorded in the book of Joshua chapter 7; Israel suffered an unexpected and humiliating defeat at Ai, Joshua is distraught about it, is pleading to the Lord to show why this happened. Lord could have given him the name of the guilty person straightaway, instead God gives in Joshua 7:14 the method of zeroing down to identifying the problems - review and analyze step-by-step starting from the basics, the very root, and carrying on till the current, till the problem is identified. Joshua implements God’s method (Joshua 7:16-18) and the culprit for the defeat is exposed. Achan and his family had the opportunity to confess straightaway, or even in between, as they saw the process zeroing in towards them. But they did not do so, frittered away their opportunity, and eventually had to pay the penalty. No one could accuse Joshua of any partiality or mistake or wrongdoing, and Achan too had no avenue of escape left, he had to confess his wrong doing and suffer for it.

God in His Word, has given to us His method for us to keep our lives free from errors and slipping up on God’s Word - periodically keep reviewing and analyzing ourselves, our behavior, our attitude, our living, our state of obedience to the Lord and His Word, etc. The Lord’s Table provides to us an opportunity to prayerfully, in the presence of the Lord, with His help, to review our lives before partaking of the Holy Communion, confess the sins, errors, and short-comings the Lord brings up before us, ask His forgiveness for them and then to go ahead and participate worthily, and be blessed by the Lord. Our returning back to the basics of the Gospel and our faith and reviewing our life accordingly will go a long way to keep us in close fellowship with the Lord, and safe from Satan and his ploys.

If you are a Christian Believer and have been participating in the Lord’s Table, then please examine your life and make sure that you are actually a disciple of the Lord, i.e., are redeemed from your sins, have submitted and surrendered your life to the Lord Jesus to live in obedience to Him and His Word. You should also always, like the Berean Believers, first check and test all teachings that you receive from the Word of God, and only after ascertaining the truth and veracity of the teachings brought to you by men, should you accept and obey them (Acts 17:11; 1 Thessalonians 5:21). If you do not do this, the false apostles and prophets sent by Satan as ministers of Christ (2 Corinthians 11:13-15), will by their trickery, cunningness, and craftiness render you ineffective for the Lord and cause severe damage to your Christian life and your rewards.

If you have not yet accepted the discipleship of the Lord Jesus, then to ensure your eternal life and heavenly rewards, take a decision in favor of the Lord Jesus now. Wherever there is surrender and obedience towards the Lord Jesus, the Lord’s blessings and safety are also there. If you are still not Born Again, have not obtained salvation, or have not asked the Lord Jesus for forgiveness for your sins, then you have the opportunity to do so right now. A short prayer said voluntarily with a sincere heart, with heartfelt repentance for your sins, and a fully submissive attitude, “Lord Jesus, I confess that I have disobeyed You, and have knowingly or unknowingly, in mind, in thought, in attitude, and in deeds, committed sins. I believe that you have fully borne the punishment of my sins by your sacrifice on the cross, and have paid the full price of those sins for all eternity. Please forgive my sins, change my heart and mind towards you, and make me your disciple, take me with you." God longs for your company and wants to see you blessed, but to make this possible, is your personal decision. Will you not say this prayer now, while you have the time and opportunity to do so - the decision is yours.

प्रभु की मेज़ - अभिमान, पाप का प्रमाण 

 

हम पहले देख चुके हैं कि कुरिन्थुस की कलीसिया के नाम लिखी इस पत्री में जिस पहली गलती को पौलुस संबोधित करता है, वही यहाँ पर उनके द्वारा प्रभु भोज के गंभीर दुरुपयोग का कारण भी है - कलीसिया में गुट-बाज़ी और विभाजन। यह छोटा और महत्वहीन प्रतीत होने वाला पाप - कलीसिया के कुछ लोगों के अन्दर एक ओहदा और पहचान रखने की लालसा, अर्थात, वह स्तर और स्थान चाहना जो परमेश्वर ने उन्हें प्रदान नहीं किया था, शैतान के द्वारा कलीसिया तथा विश्वासियों के व्यक्तिगत जीवनों में  विनाशकारी परिणामों को ले आया। वास्तविकता में, यह पाप वही था जो प्रधान स्वर्गदूत लूसिफर ने स्वर्ग में किया, जिसके कारण उसे निकाल बाहर किया गया और वह शैतान बन गया। मुख्य बात यह है कि कोई भी पाप कभी भी छोटा और महत्वहीन नहीं होता है। प्रत्येक पाप शैतान को दिया गया एक निमंत्रण और उसके लिए खोला गया एक द्वार है कि वह आए और उस पाप को करने वाले व्यक्ति तथा उसमें उसके संगियों के जीवनों में आकर अपने विनाश को कार्यान्वित करे। पवित्र आत्मा के द्वारा पौलुस उन्हें 1 कुरिन्थियों 11:23 और आगे के पदों में उनके द्वारा प्रभु भोज के दुरुपयोग तथा इस बात के दुष्प्रभावों को सुधारने के बारे में बताता और सिखाता है। संक्षेप में, पौलुस उनके सामने प्रभु यीशु द्वारा प्रभु भोज को स्थापित करने को दोहराता है, और अनुचित रीति से प्रभु की मेज़ में भाग लेने के दुष्परिणामों को बताता है। किन्तु पद 23 में पौलुस द्वारा कहा गया आरंभिक वाक्य विचार तथा मनन करने के योग्य है, क्योंकि यह हमारे सामने पाप के एक और दुष्परिणाम को उजागर करता है - अभिमान और हृदय की कठोरता।

पौलुस, पद 23 में उन बहकाए गए और गलत मार्ग पर डाल दिए गए विश्वासियों को सुधारने का संबोधन “क्योंकि यह बात मुझे प्रभु से पहुंची, और मैं ने तुम्हें भी पहुंचा दी...” कहने के द्वारा करता है; जिसका तात्पर्य है कि अब वह जो कहने तथा सिखाने जा रहा है वे उसके अपने विचार और समाधान नहीं हैं, परंतु जो प्रभु ने उसे दिया और उन्हें बताने के लिए कहा है। पौलुस, एक प्रेमी और धीरजवंत पिता के समान, अपने आत्मिक बच्चों की सहायता करने और उन्हें शैतान के हाथों, जहाँ उन्होंने अपने आप को फंसा लिया है, से छुड़ाने के प्रयास में लगा हुआ है। किन्तु कुरिन्थियों के विश्वासियों में से कुछ लोग उसकी अनदेखी करने, उसके परामर्श की अवहेलना करने, और उसे उसका स्थान, जो उनके मध्य उसे मिलना चाहिए था नहीं देने में लगे हुए हैं। पौलुस ने कुरिन्थुस में डेढ़ साल रहकर परिश्रम किया था, उन्हें परमेश्वर का वचन सिखाया था (प्रेरितों 18:1, 11), और उनसे उसका गहरा लगाव भी हो गया था; इसकी तुलना में पौलुस ने थिस्सलुनीकिया में केवल “तीन सबत” ही प्रचार किया (प्रेरितों 17:1-2)। किन्तु जब हम 1 थिस्सलुनीकियों 1 अध्याय को पढ़ते हैं, तो कुरिन्थुस की मण्डली की तुलना में उनके गुणों और उनकी सराहना को बहुत उच्च पाते हैं।

पौलुस द्वारा कुरिन्थुस की मण्डली को लिखी गई दोनों पत्रियों में, वह उन्हें बारंबार याद दिलाता और समझाने का प्रयास करता है, परमेश्वर द्वारा उसे दिए गए प्रभु के प्रेरित होने के ओहदे को, और उसके आत्मिक अधिकार के बारे में - जिसे उसने उन पर कभी भी नहीं थोपा। परंतु जितना समय पौलुस ने उनके मध्य बिताया था, उनके प्रति जो लगाव उसे हो गया था, और उन लोगों को उसे जानने और समझने का जो अवसर मिला था, उसके कारण पौलुस को यह सब कहने और करने की कोई आवश्यकता नहीं होनी चाहिए थी, उन्हें स्वतः ही सत्य को समझ लेना चाहिए था। पौलुस इस पत्री का आरंभ उन्हें अपने प्रभु की ओर से प्रेरित नियुक्त किए जाने की बात के साथ करता है (1 कुरिन्थियों 1:1)। वह 1 कुरिन्थियों 4:1-5 में संकेत करता है कि कुछ बात थी जिसके विषय कुरिन्थुस के विश्वासी उसकी कोई गलती कह रहे थे और उसके विरुद्ध विचार बना रहे थे; और 4:1-2 से लगता है कि यह बात पौलुस की सेवकाई और उसके प्रभु का भण्डारी होने से संबंधित थी। फिर पौलुस उन्हें 1 कुरिन्थियों 4:15-21 में उनका आत्मिक पिता होने के अधिकार से उन्हें डाँट लगाता है, और 4:18 में उनमें से कुछ के अंदर पनप रहे घमण्ड का उल्लेख करता है। पौलुस 1 कुरिन्थियों 9:1-2 में फिर से अपने प्रेरित होने और आत्मिक अधिकार रखने को दोहराता है; यहाँ 9:1-18 से प्रतीत होता है कि उस पर अपने स्थान और अधिकार का प्रयोग उन पर निर्भर होकर जीवन जीने, उनके संसाधनों को अपने स्वार्थ के लिए प्रयोग करने का दोष लगाया जा रहा था। वह उनके इस दोषारोपण का घोर विरोध करता है, और उन्हें स्पष्ट करता है कि उनका उसके बारे में यह सोचना निराधार और गलत है, और फिर वह 9 अध्याय के अंत में उन्हें समझाता है कि वह प्रभु का एक अनुशासित सेवक है, और उसे जो करना चाहिए तथा, जो नहीं करना चाहिए, उससे वह भली-भांति अवगत है (9:24-27)। फिर अध्याय 11 के आरंभ में वह उन्हें याद दिलाता है कि उसका आदर्श, जिसका वह अनुसरण करता था, प्रभु यीशु है, और उन्हें भी उसके समान ऐसा ही करना चाहिए (11:1-2), जिससे एक बार फिर यह संकेत मिलता है कि कुरिन्थुस की कलीसिया के कुछ लोग उससे और उसकी शिक्षाओं से प्रसन्न नहीं थे, और यही सोचते थे कि वह अपनी ओर से कहता और करता रहता था। अब यहाँ, 11:23 में आकर, वह फिर से यह आवश्यक समझता है कि उन्हें बता दे कि जो कुछ भी वह उन्हें कह और सिखा रहा था, वह उसके अपने विचार नहीं थे, परन्तु उनके लिए प्रभु द्वारा दिया गया संदेश था।

 

कुरिन्थुस की मण्डली के कुछ लोगों के उसके प्रति रखे गए इस व्यवहार और रवैये की तुलना में, पौलुस चाहे परमेश्वर के वचन और सिद्धांतों को लेकर खरा और स्पष्टवादी था, किन्तु उनके प्रति दीन बना रहा, समझ-बूझ रखे रहा, उसके प्रति उनकी गलतफहमियों और गलत धारणाओं के प्रति धैर्य रखने वाला बना रहा, जिससे कि वह उन्हें उनकी गलतियों से और शैतान के हाथों से, जहाँ उन्होंने अपने आप को फंसा दिया था, निकाल सके, उन्हें बचा सके। उनमें जो कुछ भी गलत था, केवल उसके बारे ही में नहीं, किन्तु उनके आत्मिक जीवनों में और प्रभु यीशु की कलीसिया होने के नाते, उसके कारण उसने कभी उनके परमेश्वर के नया जन्म पाई हुई संतान होने, मसीही विश्वासी होने पर कोई प्रश्न नहीं उठाया; वरन उन्हें सदा ही उद्धार पाए हुए और परमेश्वर के परिवार के लोग होने को स्मरण दिलाकर उनसे रखी गई अपेक्षाओं को याद दिलाता रहा, इस ज़िम्मेदारी के नाते उन्हें कैसा व्यवहार और जीवन जीना है बताता रहा। यह तुलनात्मक रवैया हमारे सामने एक ठोस प्रकट तथ्य को लेकर आता है, कि पाप के कारण अभिमान, गलतफहमियाँ, गलत धारणाएं, और हृदयों की कठोरता आती है; किन्तु परमेश्वर की भक्ति का जीवन दीनता, धैर्य, सहनशीलता, और समझ-बूझ से काम करने वाला होता है, खरे और स्पष्टवादी होने के बावजूद भी। प्रभु की मेज़ में भाग लेने वालों के लिए इस बात का प्रकट तात्पर्य है कि यदि किसी मसीही के जीवन में अभिमान, असहनशीलता, पीठ-पीछे चुगली और बुराई करना, किसी विश्वासी को नीचा दिखाने या अपमानित करने की भावना, दूसरों पर दोषारोपण करने की प्रवृत्ति, और हृदय की कठोरता है, आदि हैं, तो फिर उसके जीवन में कोई पाप छिपा हुआ है, जिसका अभी तक उसने प्रभु के साथ समाधान नहीं किया है। और क्योंकि वह पाप झपटा मारकर गिरा देने के अवसर की प्रतीक्षा कर रहा है, इसलिए इससे पहले कि वह कोई विनाश जीवन में लाए, इससे पहले कि वह प्रभु द्वारा दी गई आशीषों को बर्बाद करे, पहले उसे प्रभु के सामने लाकर उसका निवारण कर लें और तब योग्य रीति से प्रभु की मेज़ में भाग लें।

  

यदि आप एक मसीही विश्वासी हैं, और प्रभु की मेज़ में भाग लेते रहे हैं, तो कृपया अपने जीवन को जाँच कर देख लें कि आप वास्तव में पापों से छुड़ाए गए हैं तथा आप ने अपना जीवन प्रभु की आज्ञाकारिता में जीने के लिए उस को समर्पित किया है। आपके लिए यह अनिवार्य है कि आप परमेश्वर के वचन की सही शिक्षाओं को जानने के द्वारा एक परिपक्व विश्वासी बनें, तथा सभी शिक्षाओं को वचन की कसौटी पर परखने, और बेरिया के विश्वासियों के समान, लोगों की बातों को पहले वचन से जाँचने और उनकी सत्यता को निश्चित करने के बाद ही उनको स्वीकार करने और मानने वाले बनें (प्रेरितों 17:11; 1 थिस्सलुनीकियों 5:21)। अन्यथा शैतान द्वारा छोड़े हुए झूठे प्रेरित और भविष्यद्वक्ता मसीह के सेवक बन कर (2 कुरिन्थियों 11:13-15) अपनी ठग विद्या और चतुराई से आपको प्रभु के लिए अप्रभावी कर देंगे और आप के मसीही जीवन एवं आशीषों का नाश कर देंगे।

  

यदि आपने प्रभु की शिष्यता को अभी तक स्वीकार नहीं किया है, तो अपने अनन्त जीवन और स्वर्गीय आशीषों को सुनिश्चित करने के लिए अभी प्रभु यीशु के पक्ष में अपना निर्णय कर लीजिए। जहाँ प्रभु की आज्ञाकारिता है, उसके वचन की बातों का आदर और पालन है, वहाँ प्रभु की आशीष और सुरक्षा भी है। प्रभु यीशु से अपने पापों के लिए क्षमा माँगकर, स्वेच्छा से तथा सच्चे मन से अपने आप को उसकी अधीनता में समर्पित कर दीजिए - उद्धार और स्वर्गीय जीवन का यही एकमात्र मार्ग है। आपको स्वेच्छा और सच्चे मन से प्रभु यीशु मसीह से केवल एक छोटी प्रार्थना करनी है, और साथ ही अपना जीवन उसे पूर्णतः समर्पित करना है। आप यह प्रार्थना और समर्पण कुछ इस प्रकार से भी कर सकते हैं, “प्रभु यीशु मैं आपका धन्यवाद करता हूँ कि आपने मेरे पापों की क्षमा और समाधान के लिए उन पापों को अपने ऊपर लिया, उनके कारण मेरे स्थान पर क्रूस की मृत्यु सही, गाड़े गए, और मेरे उद्धार के लिए आप तीसरे दिन जी भी उठे, और आज जीवित प्रभु परमेश्वर हैं। कृपया मेरे पापों को क्षमा करें, मुझे अपनी शरण में लें, और मुझे अपना शिष्य बना लें। मैं अपना जीवन आप के हाथों में समर्पित करता हूँ।” सच्चे और समर्पित मन से की गई आपकी एक प्रार्थना आपके वर्तमान तथा भविष्य को, इस लोक के और परलोक के जीवन को, अनन्तकाल के लिए स्वर्गीय एवं आशीषित बना देगी।

English Translation

The Lord’s Table - Arrogance, an Evidence of Sin

We have earlier seen that the first error that Paul takes up and addresses in this letter to the Corinthians, is the same that he points out as the root cause of their grave mishandling of the Lord’s Table - factionalism and divisions in the Church. The seemingly small and insignificant sin - the desire of some members of the Corinthian Church to have approval and recognition in the congregation, i.e., have a status and position, not accorded to them by the Lord in His Church, allowed Satan to bring in very disastrous consequences in the Church as well as the personal life of the Believers. Actually, this sin was the same that Lucifer as the Archangel committed in heaven, for which he was cast out, and became Satan. The fact of the matter is that no sin is small or insignificant; every sin is an invitation extended to Satan along with an opening provided to him to come in and wreak havoc in the life of the person committing the sin and those joining him in it. Through the Holy Spirit, Paul shows them from 1 Corinthians 11:23 onwards how to rectify the error of their mishandling the Holy Communion and its consequences. Essentially, Paul recounts to them the Lord’s setting up of the Holy Communion and its purpose, and tells them about the consequences of unworthily participating in the Lord’s Table. But Paul’s opening sentence in verse 23 is worthy of consideration and pondering over, since it brings to our attention another consequence of sin - arrogance and hardening of hearts.

Paul, in verse 23, begins his correcting the deceived and misled Believers by saying “For I received from the Lord that which I also delivered to you…”, implying that what he is now going to say and teach are not his own thoughts and solution, but what the Lord has told him and asked him to tell them. Paul, like a loving and considerate father, continues to try to help and deliver his spiritual children from the trap of Satan, into which they had fallen; but some amongst the Corinthian Believers continue to ignore him, disregard his advice, and not accord him the place and honor he ought to have had amongst them. Paul had stayed and labored in Corinth for one and a half years (Acts 18:1, 11), teaching them the Word of God and had become attached to them; in contrast he had stayed in Thessalonica for only “three Sabbaths” (Acts 17:1-2). But 1 Thessalonians chapter 1, presents a stark contrast of the qualities and commendations given to the Thessalonian Church in comparison to what we see about the Corinthian Church.

In both the letters written by Paul to the Corinthians, he repeatedly tries to remind and convince them of the status the Lord has given him as the Lord’s Apostle, and, of his spiritual authority - which he has refrained from asserting over them. Whereas for the amount of time Paul had spent amongst them, for the attachment he had developed for them, and since they had the opportunity to personally get to know him over this time-period, this should have been something totally unnecessary. Paul begins this letter by telling them of his apostleship from the Lord Jesus (1 Corinthians 1:1). In 1 Corinthians 4:1-5, he indicates some issue for which the Corinthians were wrongly and unfavorably judging him, and it seems from 4:1-2 that it was related to Paul’s ministry and being a steward of the Lord. Paul then in 1 Corinthians 4:15-21, admonishes them as their spiritual father, while pointing out the arrogance of some in 4:18. In 1 Corinthians 9:1-2, Paul again states his apostleship and spiritual authority; here 9:1-18 seem to indicate that he was being accused of using this status and authority, to live off them, to use their resources for his personal benefit. But he vehemently defends himself and clarifies that their thinking about him in this manner is unfounded and false, and ends chapter 9 by pointing out to them that he was a disciplined servant of the Lord, being well aware of what he ought to do and what not to do (9:24-27). Then again, at the beginning of chapter 11, he reminds them that his role model, the one he emulates, is the Lord Jesus, and they too should do the same (11:1-2), which again hints that some in the Corinthian Church were not happy with him nor agreeing with his teachings, thinking that he was doing it on his own. Now, in 11:23 he again feels it necessary to point out to them that what he was teaching and telling them was not from his own side, but was the Lord’s message to them.

In contrast to the attitude that some in the Corinthian Church had developed towards him, Paul though forthright for the Word of God and doctrines, remains humble, understanding, and willing to put up with their misunderstandings and misconceptions about him, so that he may deliver them from their errors and Satan’s hand into which they had placed themselves. Despite all that was wrong with them, not just about him, but in their spiritual lives and as the Church of the Lord Jesus, he never ever questions their being the Born-Again children of God, being the Christian Believers; rather always keeps reminding them of their being saved and being the family of God, teaches them what was expected of them and how they ought to conduct themselves. This contrast places before us the stark fact that sin brings arrogance, misunderstandings, misconceptions, and hardening of hearts; but godly living brings humility, forbearance, and a tolerant, understanding attitude, even while being forthright and committed to the Word of God. The evident implication for the participants in the Lord’s Table is that if, in the life of a Christian Believer, there is any arrogance, intolerance, back-biting, desire to bring down or humiliate a Believer, casting aspersions on others, a hardening of heart, etc. then there is sin that has not yet been settled in that person’s life, and is lurking to pounce. Instead of letting it simmer inside and wreak havoc at some opportune moment, first bring it to the Lord and settle it before it destroys the blessings of the Lord, and then participate in the Holy Communion in a worthy manner.

If you are a Christian Believer and have been participating in the Lord’s Table, then please examine your life and make sure that you are actually a disciple of the Lord, i.e., are redeemed from your sins, have submitted and surrendered your life to the Lord Jesus to live in obedience to Him and His Word. You should also always, like the Berean Believers, first check and test all teachings that you receive from the Word of God, and only after ascertaining the truth and veracity of the teachings brought to you by men, should you accept and obey them (Acts 17:11; 1 Thessalonians 5:21). If you do not do this, the false apostles and prophets sent by Satan as ministers of Christ (2 Corinthians 11:13-15), will by their trickery, cunningness, and craftiness render you ineffective for the Lord and cause severe damage to your Christian life and your rewards.

If you have not yet accepted the discipleship of the Lord Jesus, then to ensure your eternal life and heavenly rewards, take a decision in favor of the Lord Jesus now. Wherever there is surrender and obedience towards the Lord Jesus, the Lord’s blessings and safety are also there. If you are still not Born Again, have not obtained salvation, or have not asked the Lord Jesus for forgiveness for your sins, then you have the opportunity to do so right now. A short prayer said voluntarily with a sincere heart, with heartfelt repentance for your sins, and a fully submissive attitude, “Lord Jesus, I confess that I have disobeyed You, and have knowingly or unknowingly, in mind, in thought, in attitude, and in deeds, committed sins. I believe that you have fully borne the punishment of my sins by your sacrifice on the cross, and have paid the full price of those sins for all eternity. Please forgive my sins, change my heart and mind towards you, and make me your disciple, take me with you." God longs for your company and wants to see you blessed, but to make this possible, is your personal decision. Will you not say this prayer now, while you have the time and opportunity to do so - the decision is yours.

प्रभु की मेज़ - समझौते द्वारा विनाश 

 

पिछले लेख में हमने 1 कुरिन्थियों 11:18-19 से प्रभु भोज में भाग लेने से संबंधित गलतियों के पहले समूह को देखा था। कलीसिया में समस्याओं की जड़ गुट-बाज़ी और विभाजन थे, जो इसलिए उत्पन्न हो गए थे क्योंकि लोग प्रभु यीशु की ओर देखने की बजाए, अपने मन-पसंद शिक्षकों और अगुवों की ओर देखने लग गए थे। उनमें से जो व्यक्तिगत महत्वाकांक्षाएँ रखते थे और ओहदा चाहते थे, उन्होंने विश्वासियों के मध्य इस विनाशकारी प्रवृत्ति को बढ़ावा दिया। कुल मिलाकर परिणाम यह हुआ कि उनमें आत्मिक अपरिपक्वता, बालकों के समान व्यवहार, शारीरिक प्रवृत्तियाँ और बर्ताव, डाह और झगड़े उत्पन्न हो गए जिन से कलीसिया में विभाजन आ गए।

 

इसके बाद पौलुस 1 कुरिन्थियों 11:20-22 में प्रभु भोज से संबंधित गलतियों के दूसरे समूह को दिखाता है जो उनमें घुस आया था। इसे समझने के लिए हमें प्रभु यीशु द्वारा अपने शिष्यों के साथ प्रभु भोज को स्थापित करते समय के कुछ संबंधित तथ्यों को दोहराना और याद करना पड़ेगा। हमने देखा था कि प्रभु यीशु ने प्रभु भोज की स्थापना शिष्यों के साथ फसह का भोज खाते समय, उसी भोज की सामग्री को लेकर की थी। हम इससे पहले, निर्गमन 12 का अध्ययन करते समय, यह भी देख चुके हैं कि परमेश्वर के चुने हुए लोगों, इस्राएलियों को फसह के दौरान खमीर का प्रयोग करना बिल्कुल वर्जित था (निर्गमन 12:15, 19; 13:7; 34:25)। हम मत्ती 26:26-27 में लिखा पाते हैं कि “उसने उस से कहा, तू कह चुका: जब वे खा रहे थे, तो यीशु ने रोटी ली, और आशीष मांग कर तोड़ी, और चेलों को देकर कहा, लो, खाओ; यह मेरी देह है। फिर उसने कटोरा ले कर, धन्यवाद किया, और उन्हें देकर कहा, तुम सब इस में से पीओ।” यहाँ हम देखते हैं कि प्रभु ने रोटी और प्याले के लिए एक-वचन शब्दों का प्रयोग किया है, बहु-वचन का नहीं, अर्थात एक ही रोटी थी और एक ही प्याला था। प्याले में भी “दाख रस” (लूका 22:18) था, अर्थात अंगूरों का रस, न कि मदिरा जो दाख रस पर खमीर के कार्य करने से बनती है; फसह के किसी भी भाग में खमीर पूर्णतः वर्जित था। बिल्कुल यही बात मरकुस 14 और लूका 22 के वृतान्तों में भी दी गई है, और इनके द्वारा भी मत्ती के हवाले के एक-वचन के प्रयोग की पुष्टि हो जाती है।

 

उपरोक्त तथ्यों को ध्यान में रखते हुए जब हम 1 कुरिन्थियों 11:20-22 को पढ़ते हैं, तो हम पहचान सकते हैं कि शैतान ने किस प्रकार से प्रभु की मेज़ को भ्रष्ट कर दिया था, उसके मनाने की प्रभु द्वारा स्थापित विधि को बिगाड़ और बदल कर कुछ और ही कर दिया था। इस प्रकार से किए गए इन बिगाड़ और बदलावों के कारण कलीसिया में फिर अन्य गलतियाँ भी घुस आई थीं। हम इन पदों से उन गलतियाँ को देख सकते हैं जो कि कलीसिया में आ गई थीं:

• रोटी और प्याले में संकेतात्मक रीति से भाग लेने के स्थान पर - शिष्यों को एक रोटी और एक प्याले में से भाग लेना था, इसलिए प्रत्येक ने रोटी का छोटा टुकड़ा, और प्याले में से एक घूंट भर ही लिया होगा; उन विश्वासियों ने प्रभु भोज को पूरा भोजन बना लिया था। हम पौलुस द्वारा पद 20 के अंत और पद 21 के मध्य में प्रयोग किए गए शब्दों से इसके विषय उसके द्वारा दिए गए ताने, उसके व्यंग्य को देख सकते हैं “...यह प्रभु भोज खाने के लिये नहीं” “...अपना भोज खा लेता है...” उन्होंने प्रभु भोज को अपने व्यक्तिगत भोज में बदल दिया था। और अब वे प्रभु की आज्ञाकारिता में, उसे आदर देने के लिए नहीं, किन्तु अपनी इच्छा के अनुसार करने के लिए एकत्रित हो रहे थे, किसी की भी परवाह किए बिना।

• वे एक साथ नहीं, अलग-अलग खा रहे थे। प्रभु ने सभी शिष्यों को एक साथ एक ही रोटी और एक ही प्याले से भाग लेने के लिए कहा था। किन्तु यहाँ तो विश्वासी पूरा भोजन करने लग गए थे, व्यक्तिगत रीति से “एक दूसरे से पहिले”। उनके मध्य एक ही प्रभु पर किए गए एक ही विश्वास की एकता का चिह्न भंग हो गया था। उसके स्थान पर अपने आप को एक-दूसरे से बढ़कर दिखाने की भावना आ गई थी, जिससे उनके मध्य केवल विभाजन और गुट ही बन सकते थे।

• उन्होंने प्याले के दाख रस को मदिरा, दाख रस पर खमीर की क्रिया से मिलने वाली वस्तु, से बदल लिया था। और उस मदिरा में से भी, जिसे कदापि वहाँ होना ही नहीं चाहिए था, एक घूंट लेने के स्थान पर, उसे इतना पी रहे थे कि मतवाले हो जाते थे - कलीसिया में। और वे यह उस समय कर रहे थे जब वे कहने को, उनके लिए दिए गए प्रभु के बलिदान को याद करने के लिए एकत्रित होते थे, अर्थात उसकी तोड़ी गई देह और बहाए गए लहू को, जिससे कि उन्हें उद्धार मिल सका, आदर देने के लिए। 

• न केवल वे प्रभु द्वारा दी गई प्रभु भोज की विधि का उल्लंघन कर रहे थे, वरन उनमें अपने साथी सह-विश्वासियों के प्रति कोई परवाह भी नहीं थी। वे प्रभु भोज के नाम में भोजन खाने को “जिन के पास नहीं है उन्हें लज्जित” (पद 22) करने के लिए प्रयोग कर रहे थे। बजाए साथी विश्वासियों के प्रति विश्वासी भाईचारे और प्रेम को दिखाने के, उन्हें जिनके पास कोई भोजन नहीं था अपने साथ भोजन में भाग लेने के लिए आमंत्रित करने की बजाए, वे उनका ठट्टा कर रहे थे, उन्हें भूखे छोड़ दे रहे थे (पद 21), जबकि स्वयं प्रभु भोज के नाम में अपना भोजन उनके सामने खा रहे थे। उनके मध्य की इस गुट-बाज़ी ने उन्हें गहराई से विभाजित कर दिया था, और विभाजन की एक रेखा थी उनके परस्पर आर्थिक और सामाजिक स्तर - जिनके अनुसार वे पृथक हो गए थे, बजाए पापों से बचाए गए और उद्धार पाए हुए परमेश्वर की संतानों के समान एक-जुट रहने के। 

पवित्र आत्मा की अगुवाई में, पौलुस कहता है कि उनका यह व्यवहार परमेश्वर की कलीसिया को तुच्छ जानना है (पद 22)। पौलुस स्तब्ध है, ऐसा लगता है कि वे लोग पौलुस से अपने व्यवहार का अनुमोदन और सराहना की अपेक्षा कर रहे थे। किन्तु पौलुस के पास अपने भौंचक्के रह जाने, व्यथित होने को बताने के लिए कोई शब्द ही नहीं हैं, वह बस इतना ही कहता है “मैं तुम से क्या कहूं?” और फिर एक फटकार “क्या इस बात में तुम्हारी प्रशंसा करूं? मैं प्रशंसा नहीं करता” के साथ बात का अंत करता है (पद 22)।

यहाँ पद 18 से 22 में हम जो घटनाक्रम देखते हैं उस पर थोड़ा विचार कीजिए। मंडली में कुछ लोगों में ओहदा और पहचान प्राप्त करने की लालसा के कारण कलीसिया में प्रभु द्वारा नियुक्त शिक्षकों और अगुवों के नाम पर गुट-बाज़ी आरंभ हो गई, और वह भी उन शिक्षकों और अगुवों की जानकारी के बिना, उनकी पीठ के पीछे। क्योंकि इस प्रवृत्ति को तुरन्त ही रोका और हटाया नहीं गया, इसलिए उसने जड़ पकड़ ली, बहुत बढ़ गई। इससे कलीसिया में और विश्वासियों के व्यक्तिगत जीवनों में आत्मिक अपरिपक्वता आ गई, वे शारीरिक लोगों के समान व्यवहार करने लगे, जिसे उनकी प्रभु और विश्वास में बढ़ोतरी और उन्नति रुक गई, जो बिगड़ कर अन्ततः डाह, झगड़े, गुट-बाज़ी, और विभाजन तक पहुँच गई। इन बातों के कारण, उनके मध्य में, प्रभु की मेज़ का पूरा स्वरूप और उद्देश्य ही बिगड़ और बदल गया, प्रभु ने जो स्वरूप दिया था उससे बिल्कुल भिन्न कुछ और ही हो गया। और वे लोग फिर प्रभु को आदर देने और उसकी महिमा करने के उद्देश्य से एकत्रित होने के स्थान पर एकत्रित होकर परमेश्वर की कलीसिया को तुच्छ जानने वाले कार्य करने वाले बन गए। उनकी गिरावट का यह सिलसिला यहीं पर नहीं रुका; न केवल उन्हें अपनी इस गंभीर त्रुटि का, उन्होंने जो परमेश्वर की कलीसिया को तुच्छ जाना और प्रभु भोज का घोर अपमान किया, एहसास भी नहीं हुआ; बल्कि उनमें अपने किए के प्रति कोई संताप, कोई लज्जा नहीं थी, वरन उन्हें तो पौलुस से आशा थी कि वह उनके किए के लिए उनकी सराहना करेगा, उनके व्यवहार का अनुमोदन करेगा। यह हमें दिखाता है कि शैतान एक छोटे और महत्वहीन प्रतीत होने वाले प्रभु के वचन के उल्लंघन के द्वारा, किस प्रकार से बहका कर परमेश्वर के विरुद्ध होकर काम करने वाला बना देता है, और हम यही सोचते रहते हैं कि हम सही हैं, कुछ गलत नहीं कर रहे हैं, प्रभु की आज्ञाकारिता में एक भक्ति का जीवन जी रहे हैं - उनके अपने अनुसार तो वे प्रभु भोज में भाग लेने के लिए ही एकत्रित होते थे, किन्तु वास्तव में परमेश्वर की कलीसिया को तुच्छ जानते थे।

इस विनाशकारी स्थिति को सुधारने के लिए, जिसके बारे में हम अगले लेख से देखना आरंभ करेंगे, पौलुस उनके सामने फिर से प्रभु द्वारा प्रभु भोज की स्थापना को दोहराता है, उसके उद्देश्यों को उन्हें समझाता, और अनुचित रीति से उसमें भाग लेने के दुष्परिणामों को बताता है।

 

यदि आप एक मसीही विश्वासी हैं, और प्रभु की मेज़ में भाग लेते रहे हैं, तो कृपया अपने जीवन को जाँच कर देख लें कि आप वास्तव में पापों से छुड़ाए गए हैं तथा आप ने अपना जीवन प्रभु की आज्ञाकारिता में जीने के लिए उस को समर्पित किया है। आपके लिए यह अनिवार्य है कि आप परमेश्वर के वचन की सही शिक्षाओं को जानने के द्वारा एक परिपक्व विश्वासी बनें, तथा सभी शिक्षाओं को वचन की कसौटी पर परखने, और बेरिया के विश्वासियों के समान, लोगों की बातों को पहले वचन से जाँचने और उनकी सत्यता को निश्चित करने के बाद ही उनको स्वीकार करने और मानने वाले बनें (प्रेरितों 17:11; 1 थिस्सलुनीकियों 5:21)। अन्यथा शैतान द्वारा छोड़े हुए झूठे प्रेरित और भविष्यद्वक्ता मसीह के सेवक बन कर (2 कुरिन्थियों 11:13-15) अपनी ठग विद्या और चतुराई से आपको प्रभु के लिए अप्रभावी कर देंगे और आप के मसीही जीवन एवं आशीषों का नाश कर देंगे।

  

यदि आपने प्रभु की शिष्यता को अभी तक स्वीकार नहीं किया है, तो अपने अनन्त जीवन और स्वर्गीय आशीषों को सुनिश्चित करने के लिए अभी प्रभु यीशु के पक्ष में अपना निर्णय कर लीजिए। जहाँ प्रभु की आज्ञाकारिता है, उसके वचन की बातों का आदर और पालन है, वहाँ प्रभु की आशीष और सुरक्षा भी है। प्रभु यीशु से अपने पापों के लिए क्षमा माँगकर, स्वेच्छा से तथा सच्चे मन से अपने आप को उसकी अधीनता में समर्पित कर दीजिए - उद्धार और स्वर्गीय जीवन का यही एकमात्र मार्ग है। आपको स्वेच्छा और सच्चे मन से प्रभु यीशु मसीह से केवल एक छोटी प्रार्थना करनी है, और साथ ही अपना जीवन उसे पूर्णतः समर्पित करना है। आप यह प्रार्थना और समर्पण कुछ इस प्रकार से भी कर सकते हैं, “प्रभु यीशु मैं आपका धन्यवाद करता हूँ कि आपने मेरे पापों की क्षमा और समाधान के लिए उन पापों को अपने ऊपर लिया, उनके कारण मेरे स्थान पर क्रूस की मृत्यु सही, गाड़े गए, और मेरे उद्धार के लिए आप तीसरे दिन जी भी उठे, और आज जीवित प्रभु परमेश्वर हैं। कृपया मेरे पापों को क्षमा करें, मुझे अपनी शरण में लें, और मुझे अपना शिष्य बना लें। मैं अपना जीवन आप के हाथों में समर्पित करता हूँ।” सच्चे और समर्पित मन से की गई आपकी एक प्रार्थना आपके वर्तमान तथा भविष्य को, इस लोक के और परलोक के जीवन को, अनन्तकाल के लिए स्वर्गीय एवं आशीषित बना देगी।

English Translation

The Lord’s Table - Compromise leads to Disaster

In the previous article we had seen the first set of errors related to partaking in the Holy Communion from 1 Corinthians 11:18-19. The root problem of the Church was factionalism and divisions that had come in because of people looking up to their favorite teachers and elders of the Church instead of the Lord Jesus. Those amongst them desirous of personal approval and recognition from men, stoked and nurtured this disastrous tendency amongst the Believers. The net result of it all was spiritual immaturity, childish behavior, being carnal, having strife and contentions, leading to divisions in the Church.

Paul then, in 1 Corinthians 11:20-22, points out the second set of errors that had crept in among them related to the Lord’s Table. To understand this, we need to recollect some pertinent facts related to the Lord’s initiating the Holy Communion with His disciples. We have seen that the Lord had established the Holy Communion during the Passover meal, using the elements of that meal. We had also seen earlier, while studying from Exodus 12, that the Israelites, the chosen people of God, had been forbidden the use of leaven for the duration of the Passover (Exodus 12:15, 19; 13:7; 34:25). We see from the account given in Matthew 26:26-27, “And as they were eating, Jesus took bread, blessed and broke it, and gave it to the disciples and said, "Take, eat; this is My body." Then He took the cup, and gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, "Drink from it, all of you”. So, we see that in establishing the Holy Communion, the Lord Jesus took bread, broke it, and asked the disciples to “eat this” (all in singular, not plural; implying one bread); then He took the cup of “fruit of the vine” (Luke 22:18), i.e., the unfermented grape juice, (and not a cup of wine - the result of fermentation or leaven acting upon the grape juice; and all use of leaven was forbidden for the Passover), and asked the disciples to "Drink from it, all of you” (again all in singular, not plural; implying one cup of grape juice).  Very much the same has been stated in the parallel accounts given in Mark 14 and Luke 22, and they too affirm the singular bread and cup, as we see in the reference from Matthew.

With the above facts in mind when we read 1 Corinthians 11:20-22, we can identify how Satan had distorted the Lord’s Table and changed its manner of observance to something quite different from what the Lord had done. This distortion had then brought in other errors into the Church. We can see from these verses that the following errors had crept into the Church:

• Instead of partaking of the Bread and Cup symbolically - the disciples had to share the one bread and one cup, therefore, everyone would have taken a small part of the bread and a sip from the cup; the Believers had started to treat it as a full meal. We can see the sarcasm that Paul uses here at the end of verse 20 and beginning of verse 21 - “...it is not to eat the Lord's Supper. For in eating, each one takes his own supper...” They had changed “The Lord’s Supper” into their “own supper”; and they were now gathering not with the intention of honoring the Lord by being obedient to Him, but for each one to do what pleased them, without caring at all for the others.

• They were eating it separately, not together. The Lord had asked all the disciples to together share the same bread and cup, at the same time. But here, the Believers had started to eat a meal, individually, “ahead of others.” The indicator of unity, of their being together as one unit in faith in the Lord had been broken; it had been replaced by a show of ‘one-upmanship’, which could only serve to divide and segregate them further.

• They had replaced the contents of the cup with wine, the fermented product from grape-juice. And instead of taking a sip from that wine, which should not have been therein the first place, they were drinking it to the extent of getting drunk - in the Church. Doing this at the time they had purportedly gathered to honor the Lord by remembering His sacrifice for them, i.e., remember His body broken for them and His blood shed for them, so that they could be delivered from their sins.

• Not only were they flouting the Lord’s instituted manner of the Holy Communion, but also had no concern for their fellow Believers, their brethren in the Lord. They were using their participation in the Holy Communion to “shame those who have nothing” (verse 22). Instead of exhibiting brotherly love and concern for fellow Believers, and inviting those who did not have any food to share and join with them, they were mocking them, letting them go hungry (verse 21) while they ate their food in the name of the Holy Communion of the Lord. The factionalism in them had deeply divided them, and one of the lines of divisions was that between the rich and the poor - they were segregating themselves according to their socio-economic status, instead of showing unity as the saved children of God.

Under the guidance of the Holy Spirit, Paul says, this was tantamount to despising the Church of God (verse 22). Paul is aghast, it seems that they were expecting an approval and commendation from Paul for what they were doing. But he is at a loss for words to express his shock and dismay about their behavior and all he can say is “What shall I say to you?”; and concludes with a tongue lashing for them “Shall I praise you in this? I do not praise you” (verse 22).

 

Consider the cascade of events that we see from verse 18 to 22 here. The desire of some people for ‘approval and recognition” in the congregation led to fostering factionalism in the name of teachers appointed by the Lord in their midst, and that too behind the backs of those teachers, unknown to them. Since this tendency was not immediately corrected, but was allowed to grow and take root, it caused spiritual immaturity, carnal behavior, and obstructed their growth and edification as Believers as well as the Church, eventually culminating in strife, contentions, and divisions in the Church. Because of the divisions and immature behavior, they changed the whole form and function of the Lord’s Table into something quite different from what the Lord had instituted. Eventually, in the name of gathering together to honor and glorify the Lord, they ended up despising the Church of God. This downward slide did not stop here; not only did they fail to realize the grave error, the gross denigration of the Church and the Holy Communion that they had committed; but they had no realization of it, no shame for it, rather they expected Paul to approve of it and praise them for their depravity. This gives us an idea of how Satan, through one seemingly small or insignificant transgression of the Lord’s commandment, can subtly beguile and lead us away into going and working against God, while all the while we can be thinking that there is nothing wrong with us and we are living a godly life, in obedience to the Lord – in their own eyes, they were gathering to partake in the Holy Communion, but in reality they were acting to despise the Church of God.

To rectify this disastrous situation, as we will start looking from the next article, Paul recounts to them the Lord’s setting up of the Holy Communion and its purpose, and tells them about the consequences of unworthily participating in the Lord’s Table.

If you are a Christian Believer and have been participating in the Lord’s Table, then please examine your life and make sure that you are actually a disciple of the Lord, i.e., are redeemed from your sins, have submitted and surrendered your life to the Lord Jesus to live in obedience to Him and His Word. You should also always, like the Berean Believers, first check and test all teachings that you receive from the Word of God, and only after ascertaining the truth and veracity of the teachings brought to you by men, should you accept and obey them (Acts 17:11; 1 Thessalonians 5:21). If you do not do this, the false apostles and prophets sent by Satan as ministers of Christ (2 Corinthians 11:13-15), will by their trickery, cunningness, and craftiness render you ineffective for the Lord and cause severe damage to your Christian life and your rewards.

If you have not yet accepted the discipleship of the Lord Jesus, then to ensure your eternal life and heavenly rewards, take a decision in favor of the Lord Jesus now. Wherever there is surrender and obedience towards the Lord Jesus, the Lord’s blessings and safety are also there. If you are still not Born Again, have not obtained salvation, or have not asked the Lord Jesus for forgiveness for your sins, then you have the opportunity to do so right now. A short prayer said voluntarily with a sincere heart, with heartfelt repentance for your sins, and a fully submissive attitude, “Lord Jesus, I confess that I have disobeyed You, and have knowingly or unknowingly, in mind, in thought, in attitude, and in deeds, committed sins. I believe that you have fully borne the punishment of my sins by your sacrifice on the cross, and have paid the full price of those sins for all eternity. Please forgive my sins, change my heart and mind towards you, and make me your disciple, take me with you." God longs for your company and wants to see you blessed, but to make this possible, is your personal decision. Will you not say this prayer now, while you have the time and opportunity to do so - the decision is yours.
