पवित्र आत्मा से सीखना – 21

    पिछले लेख में हमने देखा है कि मसीही विश्वासी, पवित्र आत्मा के भण्डारी हैं। वह उनमें उनके उद्धार पाने के क्षण से निवास करता है; और उन्हें परमेश्वर द्वारा दी गई बातों और प्रावधानों के बारे में सीखना है। परमेश्वर पवित्र आत्मा उन्हें उनका सहायक, साथी, शिक्षक, और मार्गदर्शक होने के लिए दिया गया है कि मसीही जीवन जीने में और परमेश्वर द्वारा उन्हें सौंपी गई सेवकाई को पूरा करने में उनका सहायक और मार्गदर्शक हो, और उन्हें सब बातों के बारे में सिखाए। अभी हम पवित्र आत्मा से सीखने के बारे में सीखने के लिए 1 कुरिन्थियों 12:12-14 पर विचार कर रहे हैं। पिछले दो लेखों में हमने पद 12 पर विचार किया था, और पिछले लेख में हमने पहली बात यह देखी थी कि मसीही विश्वासी से यह अपेक्षा रखी जाती है कि वह उन सभी बातों के बारे में सीखेगा जो परमेश्वर ने उसे दी हैं, जिन में पवित्र आत्मा भी सम्मिलित है, ताकि परमेश्वर के प्रावधानों का सही और उचित उपयोग कर सके। हमने पद 12 से जो दूसरी बात देखी थी, वह थी कि सँसार की कोई भी आत्मा या मानवीय आत्मा विश्वासियों को परमेश्वर के द्वारा दी गई बातों के बारे में कभी नहीं सिखा सकती है। इसलिए विश्वासियों का प्राथमिक रीति से पवित्र आत्मा के अतिरिक्त किसी अन्य से उन बातों के बारे में सीखने का प्रयास करना न केवल व्यर्थ है, बल्कि परमेश्वर के वचन पर अविश्वास करना है। और तीसरी बात जो पद 12 से हमने देखी थी, वह थी कि पवित्र आत्मा की सेवकाई की अनदेखी कर के प्राथमिक रीति से मनुष्यों और उनकी रचनाओं से सीखने के पीछे जाना, पवित्र आत्मा को नीचा दिखाना, परमेश्वर का अपमान करना, और उसका अनाज्ञाकारी होना है। हमने यह भी देखा था कि परमेश्वर मनुष्यों से सीखने को वर्जित नहीं करता है, बल्कि उसके भक्त, समर्पित, ईमानदार लोगों से सीखने और उन्हें सिखाने के लिये कहता है। क्योंकि सभी मनुष्य असिद्ध होते हैं, सभी से चूक होती है, इसलिये परमेश्वर की आज्ञा है कि कभी भी मनुष्यों पर अन्ध-विश्वास न करें; मनुष्य की हर बात, हर शिक्षा को पहले वचन से भली-भाँति जाँचने-परखने और वचन से पूर्णतः सुसंगत होने के बाद ही उसे स्वीकार करें। आज से हम इस खण्ड में से पद 13 पर विचार करना आरम्भ करेंगे, और पवित्र आत्मा से सीखने के बारे में आगे सीखेंगे।

    पवित्र आत्मा की अगुवाई में पौलुस प्रेरित ने लिखा है “जिन को हम मनुष्यों के ज्ञान की सिखाई हुई बातों में नहीं, परन्तु आत्मा की सिखाई हुई बातों में, आत्मिक बातें आत्मिक बातों से मिला मिला कर सुनाते हैं।” इस पद का आरंभिक वाक्यांश “जिन को हम ” में प्रयुक्त “जिन”, पद 12 के संदर्भ में प्रकट है कि “उन बातों को जानें, जो परमेश्वर ने हमें दी हैं” के लिए है। यहाँ पर ध्यान दीजिए कि पौलुस बहुवचन सर्वनाम “हम” लिखता है, न कि अपेक्षित एकवचन सर्वनाम “मैं”। यह इस बात का संकेत करता है कि पौलुस और उसकी सेवकाई में उसके सहकर्मी भी, सभी अपनी सेवकाई में पवित्र आत्मा के इस निर्देश का पालन करते थे; और यह पौलुस का कोई व्यक्तिगत विचार या कार्य-शैली मात्र नहीं था। अर्थात, पौलुस कह रहा है कि पद 12 का “उन बातों को जानें, जो परमेश्वर ने हमें दी हैं” वे बातें उसके तथा उसके साथियों के प्रचार और शिक्षाओं की सामग्री थीं। क्योंकि यह हमारी भी शिक्षा और उपयोग के लिए, अनन्त काल के लिए परमेश्वर के वचन में लिखवाया गया है, इसलिए इसे निःसंकोच विश्वासियों के लिए पवित्र आत्मा से सीखने का एक तरीका स्वीकार किया जाना चाहिए – सभी विश्वासियों को परमेश्वर के द्वारा उन्हें दी गई बातों के बारे में सीखना है।

    लेकिन हम पौलुस, तथा पवित्र शास्त्र के अन्य लेखकों के लेखों से जानते हैं कि परमेश्वर के वचन में विश्वासियों को परमेश्वर द्वारा दी गई बातों के अतिरिक्त भी और बहुतेरे विषय लिए और सिखाए गए हैं। न तो पौलुस ने और न ही उसके साथियों ने अपने आप को केवल परमेश्वर द्वारा विश्वासियों को दी गई बातों के बारे में सिखाने तक ही सीमित रखा है। और परमेश्वर पवित्र आत्मा ने उन सभी को कई अन्य बातों के बारे में भी लिखने के लिए प्रेरणा दी है। इसलिए दावे के साथ यह बात कहना, न तो इस पद की गलत व्याख्या है, और न ही पवित्र शास्त्र में दिए गए अन्य विषयों के संदर्भ में कोई विरोधाभास है।

    ऐसी परिस्थितियों में सामान्यतः हमारे मनों में आने वाले विचार के विपरीत, ध्यान कीजिए कि यहाँ पर पौलुस ने न तो यह कहा है और न ही यह अभिप्राय दिया है कि “हम केवल इन बातों के ही बारे में बोलेंगे।” ध्यान कीजिए, पौलुस ने यह पत्री कुरिन्थुस की मण्डली को उनकी गलतियाँ और अनुचित व्यवहार को सुधारने के लिए लिखी थी। जैसा कि हम पहले देख चुके हैं, पौलुस ने इस बात पर बल दिया है कि कुरिन्थुस के विश्वासी साँसारिक, अपरिपक्व, और बच्चों के समान व्यवहार करने वाले थे, और इसलिए वह उन्हें केवल “दूध” ही दे सका “अन्न” या ठोस भोजन नहीं (1 कुरिन्थियों 3:1-3), क्योंकि वे न तो उसे ग्रहण कर सकते थे और न ही पचा सकते थे। दूसरे शब्दों में, पवित्र शास्त्र में “अन्न” या ठोस भोजन के बारे में भी दिया गया है, किन्तु इन कुरिन्थियों को केवल “दूध” ही दिया जा सकता था। पौलुस और उसके साथियों के द्वारा, परमेश्वर द्वारा उन्हें दी गई बातों के बारे में जो शिक्षाएँ दी गई हैं, तात्पर्य यही है कि वे उस “दूध” का ही एक भाग हैं जो पौलुस उन्हें दे रहा था; ये उस “अन्न” या ठोस भोजन का भाग नहीं हैं जो बाद में आना था, जब वे परिपक्व हो जाते और साँसारिक नहीं रहते।

    इसलिए हमारे लिए शिक्षा यह है कि परमेश्वर ने जो बातें मसीही विश्वासियों को उनके उद्धार पाने के पल में दी हैं, उनके बारे में सीखना मसीही विश्वासियों की बुनियादी या आरंभिक शिक्षाओं का भाग हैं; किन्तु इस से यह नहीं समझना चाहिए कि विश्वासियों को केवल उन्हें ही सीखना है। ये तो मूल बातों का एक भाग हैं, और उन्नत बातें आगे आएंगी जब विश्वासी आत्मिक जीवन में परिपक्व होंगे। इसलिए यहाँ पर पद 13 के इस आरंभिक वाक्यांश को समझने में न तो कोई गलत व्याख्या है, और न ही अन्य पवित्र शास्त्र के साथ कोई विरोधाभास है। अगले लेख में हम इस से और आगे देखेंगे।

    यदि आपने प्रभु की शिष्यता को अभी तक स्वीकार नहीं किया है, तो अपने अनन्त जीवन और स्वर्गीय आशीषों को सुनिश्चित करने के लिए अभी प्रभु यीशु के पक्ष में अपना निर्णय कर लीजिए। जहाँ प्रभु की आज्ञाकारिता है, उसके वचन की बातों का आदर और पालन है, वहाँ प्रभु की आशीष और सुरक्षा भी है। स्वेच्छा से अपने पापों के लिये पश्चाताप करके, प्रभु यीशु से अपने पापों के लिए क्षमा माँगकर, स्वेच्छा से तथा सच्चे मन से अपने आप को उसकी अधीनता में समर्पित कर दीजिए - उद्धार और स्वर्गीय जीवन का यही एकमात्र मार्ग है। आपको स्वेच्छा और सच्चे मन से प्रभु यीशु मसीह से केवल एक छोटी प्रार्थना करनी है, और साथ ही अपना जीवन उसे पूर्णतः समर्पित करना है। आप यह प्रार्थना और समर्पण कुछ इस प्रकार से भी कर सकते हैं, “प्रभु यीशु, मैं अपने पापों के लिए पश्चातापी हूँ, उनके लिए आप से क्षमा माँगता हूँ। मैं आपका धन्यवाद करता हूँ कि आपने मेरे पापों की क्षमा और समाधान के लिए उन पापों को अपने ऊपर लिया, उनके कारण मेरे स्थान पर क्रूस की मृत्यु सही, गाड़े गए, और मेरे उद्धार के लिए आप तीसरे दिन जी भी उठे, और आज जीवित प्रभु परमेश्वर हैं। कृपया मुझे और मेरे पापों को क्षमा करें, मुझे अपनी शरण में लें, और मुझे अपना शिष्य बना लें। मैं अपना जीवन आप के हाथों में समर्पित करता हूँ।” सच्चे और समर्पित मन से की गई आपकी एक प्रार्थना आपके वर्तमान तथा भविष्य को, इस लोक के और परलोक के जीवन को, अनन्तकाल के लिए स्वर्गीय एवं आशीषित बना देगी।

Learning From the Holy Spirit – 21

 

    In the previous article we have seen that Christian Believers are the stewards of the Holy Spirit. He resides in them since the moment of their salvation; and He teaches them all about the things and provisions freely given to them by God. God the Holy Spirit has been given to them to be their Helper, Companion, Teacher, and Guide in living their Christian lives and fulfilling their God given ministry; and as their Teacher, to teach them about all things. We are presently considering 1 Corinthians 12:12-14 to learn how we can learn from the Holy Spirit. In the previous two articles we have considered verse 12, and in the last article the first thing that we saw was that it is expected of the Christian Believer that he will learn about all that God has given to him, including learning about the Holy Spirit, to worthily utilize God’s gifts. The second thing we saw from verse 12 was that no worldly or human spirit can ever make known to the Believers about the things given to them by God. Therefore, it is not only futile for Believers to try and learn primarily from anyone but the Holy Spirit about them, but doing so is also disbelieving God’s Word. The third thing we learnt from verse 12 was that ignoring the ministry of the Holy Spirit and primarily going after learning from men and their works, is demeaning the Holy Spirit, insulting God, being disobedient to Him. We had also seen that God has not forbidden learning from men; rather He has asked His reverent, honest, and committed people to teach others, and asked others to learn from such people. But since all men are fallible, none is perfect, therefore, God has commanded never to have a blind-faith on any man. Everything that man says and teaches must first be minutely cross-checked using God’s Word, and should only be accepted if it is found fully consistent with the Word. From today we will take up verse 13 of this passage and learn further about learning from the Holy Spirit.

    The Apostle Paul under the guidance of the Holy Spirit says in verse 13, “These things we also speak, not in words which man's wisdom teaches but which the Holy Spirit teaches, comparing spiritual things with spiritual.” The first phrase of this verse is “These things we also speak” and from the context of verse 12, it is apparent that the “These things” that Paul is mentioning are “the things that have been freely given to us by God” of verse 12. Notice that in this first phrase of verse 13 Paul uses the pronoun “we” i.e., plural, instead of the expected singular “I”. This indicates that Paul and his companions in ministry, they all followed this guidance of the Holy Spirit in their ministry; and this was not just Paul’s personal opinion or way of doing things. So, what Paul is saying is that “the things that have been freely given to us by God” of verse 12, those things formed the contents of the preaching and teaching he and his companions used to do. Since this has been recorded in God’s Word for all times, for our learning and utilization as well, therefore, it can safely be accepted as a method that God the Holy Spirit wants followed – the Believers must learn about what God has freely given to them.

    But we also see from Paul’s writings, and those of the other authors of the Scriptures, that there is a very wide range of subjects covered and taught in God’s Word, over and above about the things that God has freely given to the Believers. Neither Paul, nor his companions and the others have restricted themselves to preaching and teaching just those things given by God to the Believers. And God the Holy Spirit has inspired them all to write about the other things as well. Therefore, this assertion is neither a misinterpretation of this first phrase of verse 13, nor a contradiction in view of the other topics taught in the Scriptures.

    Quite unlike the thought that commonly comes to our minds in such situations, Paul neither says nor implies that “we only speak about these things.” Remember, Paul has written this letter to the Corinthians Church to correct their errors and wrong practices. As we have seen earlier, Paul emphasizes in this letter that the Corinthian Believers were carnal, immature, and child-like, and therefore he could only give them “milk” and could not give them “sold food” (1 Corinthians 3:1-3), since they were incapable of receiving and digesting it. In other words, in the Scriptures, “solid food” has also been written about, but these Corinthians Believers could only be fed the “milk.” Paul and his companion’s teaching to them about the things that God has given to them, therefore implies that these things comprised a part of that “milk” that Paul was feeding them; it was not a part of the “solid food” that would come later, once they matured and were not carnal anymore.

    Therefore, the lesson for us is that learning about all that God has given to the Christian Believers at the moment of their salvation, is part of the basic teachings that every Christian Believer should learn; but this must not be taken to mean that these are the only things that they have to learn. These are just a part of the basics; the advanced will follow as they grow spiritually. So, there is neither a misinterpretation nor a contradiction here in understanding this first phrase. We will carry on from here in the next article.

    If you have not yet accepted the discipleship of the Lord, make your decision in favor of the Lord Jesus now to ensure your eternal life and heavenly blessings. Where there is obedience to the Lord, where there is respect and obedience to His Word, there is also the blessing and protection of the Lord. Repenting of your sins, and asking the Lord Jesus for forgiveness of your sins, voluntarily and sincerely, surrendering yourself to Him - is the only way to salvation and heavenly life. You only have to say a short but sincere prayer to the Lord Jesus Christ willingly and with a penitent heart, and at the same time completely commit and submit your life to Him. You can also make this prayer and submission in words something like, “Lord Jesus, I am sorry for my sins and repent of them. I thank you for taking my sins upon yourself, paying for them through your life.  Because of them you died on the cross in my place, were buried, and you rose again from the grave on the third day for my salvation, and today you are the living Lord God and have freely provided to me the forgiveness, and redemption from my sins, through faith in you. Please forgive my sins, take me under your care, and make me your disciple. I submit my life into your hands." Your one prayer from a sincere and committed heart will make your present and future life, in this world and in the hereafter, heavenly and blessed for eternity.

       पिछले लेख में हमने देखा था कि परमेश्वर द्वारा दिए गए मूल स्वरूप को छोड़ कर, मनुष्यों द्वारा बदल दिए गए स्वरूप का पालन करने, परमेश्वर के वचन के स्थान पर मनुष्यों के वचन को महत्व देने, उसकी आज्ञाकारिता करने के कारण, मसीही विश्वासी परमेश्वर के मार्गों से भटक जाते हैं। ऐसे में शैतान द्वारा उन्हें अनेकों प्रकार की गलतियों में डाल कर उन्हें परमेश्वर और उसकी आशीषों से दूर रखने का अवसर मिल जाता है। गलतियों में पड़े, परमेश्वर से दूर ये विश्वासी यही समझते रहते हैं कि वे सही मार्ग पर हैं, जब कि होते शैतान के मार्ग पर हैं। इसके सुधार का एक ही तरीका है – परमेश्वर के वचन को लौटना, उसी का पालन करना; न कि मनुष्यों द्वारा लाए गए परिवर्तनों पालन करना। आज हम इसी के बारे में कुछ और देखेंगे।

प्रेरितों 2 में, पवित्र आत्मा प्राप्त करने के पश्चात, पतरस जब यरूशलेम में एकत्रित हुए भक्त यहूदियों के सामने खड़े होकर, जो हो रहा था उसके बारे में उनके असमंजस और कौतूहल के निवारण के लिए बोलना आरंभ करता है, तब उनके सामने पवित्र शास्त्र में से संबंधित बातों और भविष्यवाणियों को लेकर आता है; अर्थात, परमेश्वर द्वारा उद्धार से संबंधित मूल बातों और भविष्यवाणियों को उन्हें स्मरण करवाता है। जब वह यह करता है तब लोगों के हृदय छिद जाते हैं, पतरस उनके सामने सुसमाचार को रखता है और 3000 लोग उद्धार पाते हैं। जब स्तिफनुस को ईश-निन्दा के झूठे आरोप लगाकर पकड़ा जाता है और यहूदियों के धर्म के अगुवों की सभा के सामने न्याय के लिए प्रस्तुत किया जाता है (यहूदियों 6:10-15), तब अपने पक्ष और बचाव को प्रस्तुत करते समय, प्रेरितों 7 में, स्तिफनुस उनके सामने इस्राएल के आरंभ से उनका इतिहास रखता है और दिखाता है कि किस प्रकार वे बारंबार परमेश्वर के वचन और मार्गों से भटकते रहे और गलतियाँ करते रहे, और उसी प्रवृत्ति के अंतर्गत उन्होंने प्रतिज्ञा और भविष्यवाणियां किए हुए मसीहा को भी मार डाला (प्रेरितों 7:51-53)। अर्थात, स्तिफनुस उन्हें उनके विश्वास और परमेश्वर के साथ संबंध की आधारभूत बातों पर लेकर जाता है और उनकी गलतियों को, परमेश्वर के वचन और मार्गों से भटकते रहने को, प्रकट करता है। ऐसी ही एक घटना यहोशू की पुस्तक के 7 अध्याय में भी दर्ज है; ऐ में इस्राएलियों की बहुत शर्मनाक और अनपेक्षित हार हुई थी, यहोशू इसके कारण बदहाल होकर परमेश्वर के सामने गिड़गिड़ाता है, उससे पूछता है कि ऐसा क्यों हुआ? प्रभु उसे सीधा उत्तर देकर दोषी व्यक्ति का नाम बता सकता था, किन्तु इसकी बजाए परमेश्वर यहोशू 7:14 में एक विधि देता है, समस्याओं के कारण को समझने और पहचानने की - मूल या आधारभूत बात से आरंभ कर के, बारी-बारी से हर एक बात को जाँचते और आँकलन करते चले जाओ, जब तक कि समस्या का कारण सामने न आ जाए। यहोशू परमेश्वर की विधि को कार्यान्वित करता है (यहोशू 7:16-18), और उनकी हार के लिए दोषी व्यक्ति प्रकट हो जाता है। आकान और उसके परिवार के पास अवसर था कि वे अपने पाप को मान लें, विशेषकर जब वे देख रहे थे कि बात उनकी ओर ही बढ़ रही है, किन्तु उन्होंने ऐसा नहीं किया, अपने अवसर को गँवा दिया, और अन्ततः परिणाम भुगतना पड़ा। अब, यहोशू पर कोई भी पक्षपात का या गलती कर देने का दोष नहीं लगा सकता था, और आकान के पास भी बचने का कोई मार्ग नहीं बचा था, उसे अपनी गलती को मानना और भुगतना ही पड़ा।

परमेश्वर ने अपने वचन में हमें अपनी विधि दी है जिससे हम अपने जीवनों को गलतियों से बचाकर रखें और परमेश्वर के वचन से भटकने से बचे रहें - समय-समय पर अपने जीवन, व्यवहार, रवैये, और परमेश्वर की आज्ञाकारिता की स्थिति का आँकलन करते रहें। प्रभु की मेज़ हमें यह अवसर प्रदान करती है कि हम प्रार्थना के साथ, प्रभु की उपस्थिति में, उसकी सहायता से, मेज़ में भाग लेने से पहले अपने जीवनों को जाँच लें। प्रभु जो भी पाप, गलतियाँ, कमियां-कमज़ोरियाँ हमारे सामने लाए, उन्हें मान कर, स्वीकार कर के, उनके लिए क्षमा मांग कर, फिर योग्य रीति से प्रभु की मेज़ में भाग लें, प्रभु से आशीष पाएं। हमारे द्वारा सुसमाचार की मूल, आधारभूत बातों की ओर लौट कर आना और उनके अनुसार आपने जीवन को जाँचना, हमें प्रभु के निकट और घनिष्ठ संगति में बनाए रखने में बहुत सहायक होगा, और हमें शैतान और उसकी युक्तियों से, उसके चंगुल में फँसने से बचाए रखेगा।

यदि आप एक मसीही विश्वासी हैं, और प्रभु की मेज़ में भाग लेते रहे हैं, तो कृपया अपने जीवन को जाँच कर देख लें कि आप वास्तव में पापों से छुड़ाए गए हैं तथा आप ने अपना जीवन प्रभु की आज्ञाकारिता में जीने के लिए उस को समर्पित किया है। आपके लिए यह अनिवार्य है कि आप परमेश्वर के वचन की सही शिक्षाओं को जानने के द्वारा एक परिपक्व विश्वासी बनें, तथा सभी शिक्षाओं को वचन की कसौटी पर परखने, और बेरिया के विश्वासियों के समान, लोगों की बातों को पहले वचन से जाँचने और उनकी सत्यता को निश्चित करने के बाद ही उनको स्वीकार करने और मानने वाले बनें (प्रेरितों 17:11; 1 थिस्सलुनीकियों 5:21)। अन्यथा शैतान द्वारा छोड़े हुए झूठे प्रेरित और भविष्यद्वक्ता मसीह के सेवक बन कर (2 कुरिन्थियों 11:13-15) अपनी ठग विद्या और चतुराई से आपको प्रभु के लिए अप्रभावी कर देंगे और आप के मसीही जीवन एवं आशीषों का नाश कर देंगे।

The Lord’s Table - Back to Basics & Self-Examination (2)

 

       In the previous article we had seen that Christian Believers, by turning away from the original form of God given things, and following their man-modified forms, by giving more importance to man’s word, instead of God’s Word, lose their way and go away from God. In such situations, Satan gets the opportunity to keep them away from God and His blessings. These Believers, on the wrong path, keep thinking they are on the correct way, whereas, they actually are on Satan’s way. There is only one way to correct this situation – return back to God’s Word, obey it; instead of following and obeying man’s modifications. Today we will consider this some more.

In Acts 2, after receiving the Holy Spirit, when Peter stands up to address the devout Jews gathered in Jerusalem for the feasts, to clear their confusion and curiosity about what was happening, Peter recounts to them from their Scriptures the pertinent prophecies recorded by God, i.e., takes them back to the basics of the prophecies related to salvation written in the Scriptures. As he does so, the people are convicted in their hearts and Peter presents the Gospel to them, and 3000 are saved. When Stephen is caught on trumped up charges of blasphemy, and is brought before the council of the Jewish religious leaders to be judged (Acts 6:10-15), then, in putting up his defence, in Acts 7, Stephen recounts to them the history of Israel from its inception, to show them how they have repeatedly erred from the Word and ways of God, and in that same error have crucified the promised and prophesied Messiah (Acts 7:51-53); i.e., Stephen takes them back to the basics of their faith and relationship with God to expose their deviating from God’s Word and falling away from God’s ways. A similar instance is recorded in the book of Joshua chapter 7; Israel suffered an unexpected and humiliating defeat at Ai, Joshua is distraught about it, is pleading to the Lord to show why this happened. Lord could have given him the name of the guilty person straightaway, instead God gives in Joshua 7:14 the method of zeroing down to identifying the problems - review and analyze step-by-step starting from the basics, the very root, and carrying on till the current, till the problem is identified. Joshua implements God’s method (Joshua 7:16-18) and the culprit for the defeat is exposed. Achan and his family had the opportunity to confess straightaway, or even in between, as they saw the process zeroing in towards them. But they did not do so, wasted away their opportunity, and eventually had to pay the penalty. No one could accuse Joshua of any partiality or mistake or wrongdoing, and Achan too had no avenue of escape left, he had to confess his wrong doing and suffer for it.

God in His Word, has given to us His method for us to keep our lives free from errors and slipping up on God’s Word - periodically keep reviewing and analyzing ourselves, our behavior, our attitude, our living, our state of obedience to the Lord and His Word, etc. The Lord’s Table provides to us an opportunity to prayerfully, in the presence of the Lord, with His help, to review our lives before partaking of the Holy Communion, confess the sins, errors, and short-comings the Lord brings up before us, ask His forgiveness for them and then to go ahead and participate worthily, and be blessed by the Lord. Our returning back to the basics of the Gospel and our faith and reviewing our life accordingly will go a long way to keep us in close fellowship with the Lord, and safe from Satan and his ploys.

If you are a Christian Believer and have been participating in the Lord’s Table, then please examine your life and make sure that you are actually a disciple of the Lord, i.e., are redeemed from your sins, have submitted and surrendered your life to the Lord Jesus to live in obedience to Him and His Word. You should also always, like the Berean Believers, first check and test all teachings that you receive from the Word of God, and only after ascertaining the truth and veracity of the teachings brought to you by men, should you accept and obey them (Acts 17:11; 1 Thessalonians 5:21). If you do not do this, the false apostles and prophets sent by Satan as ministers of Christ (2 Corinthians 11:13-15), will by their trickery, cunningness, and craftiness render you ineffective for the Lord and cause severe damage to your Christian life and your rewards.

If you have not yet accepted the discipleship of the Lord Jesus, then to ensure your eternal life and heavenly rewards, take a decision in favor of the Lord Jesus now. Wherever there is surrender and obedience towards the Lord Jesus, the Lord’s blessings and safety are also there. If you are still not Born Again, have not obtained salvation, or have not asked the Lord Jesus for forgiveness for your sins, then you have the opportunity to do so right now. A short prayer said voluntarily with a sincere heart, with heartfelt repentance for your sins, and a fully submissive attitude, “Lord Jesus, I confess that I have disobeyed You, and have knowingly or unknowingly, in mind, in thought, in attitude, and in deeds, committed sins. I believe that you have fully borne the punishment of my sins by your sacrifice on the cross, and have paid the full price of those sins for all eternity. Please forgive my sins, change my heart and mind towards you, and make me your disciple, take me with you." God longs for your company and wants to see you blessed, but to make this possible, is your personal decision. Will you not say this prayer now, while you have the time and opportunity to do so - the decision is yours.

हमने पिछले लेखों में देखा है कि पाप कलीसिया में अपने घातक परिणाम ले आया, और शैतान को कलीसिया को विभाजित करने, उसमें तबाही मचाने का अवसर मिल गया। उसके प्रभाव में आकर लोग कलीसिया को तुच्छ जान रहे थे, प्रभु की मेज़ के दुरुपयोग और उसकी गलत समझ रखने के द्वारा वे प्रभु भोज का अपमान कर रहे थे, किन्तु उन्हें लगता था कि वे ठीक हैं और भक्ति का जीवन बिता रहे हैं। गलतियों को सुधारने के लिए, पवित्र आत्मा, पौलुस के द्वारा, उन्हें प्रभु यीशु के द्वारा प्रभु भोज के आरंभ किए जाने पर लेकर जाता है, और उनके सामने प्रभु द्वारा उसे स्थापित करने को दोहराता है, जिससे वे मेज़ के सही स्वरूप को जान और समझ सकें और उसका अनुसरण उसी प्रकार से करने लगें, जिस स्वरूप में प्रभु ने उसे स्थापित किया था। यह माना जाता है कि पौलुस ने यह पत्री लगभग 59 ईसवी में लिखी थी, अर्थात, प्रभु के मारे जाने और जी उठने के लगभग 25-26 वर्ष के बाद। इसलिए प्रभु की मेज़ के स्थापित किए जाने को दोहराना, सुसमाचारों में दिए गए इसके वर्णन की पुष्टि और अनुमोदन करता है, क्योंकि यहाँ पर भी वैसा ही वर्णन दिया गया है जैसा सुसमाचारों में लिखा हुआ है। हम 1 कुरिन्थियों 11:23-25 से देखते हैं कि “प्रभु यीशु ने जिस रात वह पकड़वाया गया” (पद 23) प्रभु भोज की स्थापना की, और यही हम सुसमाचारों में भी लिखा हुआ पाते हैं। साथ ही यह फसह के भोजन से भिन्न था, जैसा कि यहाँ पर भी लिखा हुआ है कि प्रभु ने यह “बियारी के पीछे” (पद 25) अर्थात मुख्य भोजन के बाद किया था। यहाँ पर भी प्रभु द्वारा रोटी और दाख रस के कटोरे के लिए एक-वचन में ही बताया गया है, एक रोटी, एक कटोरा; जो इस बात का भी संकेत है कि यह केवल प्रतीक के रूप में था, संपूर्ण भोजन करना नहीं, जैसा पद 25-26 में लिखा है, प्रभु यीशु के बलिदान की यादगारी में।

यह हमारे सामने परमेश्वर के वचन में से, परमेश्वर द्वारा दी गई एक विधि को लाता है, जो मसीही विश्वासियों के लिए अपने जीवनों को जाँचने और सुधारने, तथा कलीसिया को ठीक रखने के लिए है - लौट कर मूल या आरंभ पर जाओ, देखो और समझो कि परमेश्वर ने पहली बार बात को कैसे, किस रीति से किया था। वर्तमान में जो हो रहा है उसकी तुलना आरंभिक के साथ करो, और फिर परमेश्वर द्वारा किए गए के अनुसार उसे सुधारो और ठीक करो। हमने इससे पहले देखा था कि परमेश्वर अपनी आराधना से संबंधित बातों के लिए बहुत विशिष्ट है, और उसे केवल वही स्वीकार्य है जो उसने कहा है, और वह भी केवल वैसे ही जैसे उसने कहा है, अन्य कुछ भी नहीं। इसलिए जो कुछ भी परमेश्वर द्वारा निर्धारित करके दिए गए नमूने से भिन्न है, उससे भटक गया है, वह परमेश्वर को अस्वीकार्य है, और उसे परमेश्वर को स्वीकार्य बनाने तथा फिर से आशीष का कारण बनने के लिए उसी स्वरूप में लाना पड़ेगा जो परमेश्वर ने बनाकर दिया था, बताया था।

       अगले लेख में हम वचन से इसी बात के और उदाहरण देखेंगे, और आज हमारे लिए इस के व्यावहारिक उपयोग को देखेंगे।

The Lord’s Table - Back to Basics & Self-Examination (1)

 

We have seen in the previous articles that sin had brought its disastrous consequences into the Church, and provided Satan the way to break up the Church, wreak havoc in it. Under its influence people were despising the Church, and denigrating the Lord’s Table by misusing and mishandling it, while thinking they were okay and behaving in a godly manner. To rectify the errors, the Holy Spirit through Paul, takes them back to the initiation of the Holy Communion by the Lord Jesus, and recounts to them the manner in which the Lord established the Communion, so that they could then follow it, do it in the proper manner, as established by the Lord. It is believed that Paul wrote this letter in A.D. 59, i.e., about 25-26 years after the death and resurrection of the Lord Jesus. Therefore, this recounting of the institution of the Lord’s Table, serves to affirm and authenticate the Gospel accounts, since the details remain the same. We see from 1 Corinthians 11:23-25 that the Lord established the Holy Communion “on the same night in which He was betrayed” (verse 23), and as we have seen from the Gospel accounts, it was not the same as the Passover meal, as it says here it was done “after supper” (verse 25), and it was done using the elements of the Passover. Also, the Lord took a bread and a cup of grape juice, here too, stated in singular, again affirming that whenever the disciples participated in the Lord’s Table, it was not to be done as a full-fledged meal, but in a symbolic manner, as is written here in the text of verses 25-26, to be done in remembrance of the Lord’s sacrifice.

This brings before us a God given method, recorded in His Word, for checking and correcting errors in the life of the Believers, and the functioning of the Church - go back to the initiation, see how God did it or had it done the first time, compare with what is happening now, and then take the corrective measures to restore what God had said and done. We had seen in an earlier article that God is very particular about His worship and only what He has said, what He has ordained, is acceptable to Him, nothing else. Therefore, anything that has deviated away from God’s established pattern and method, has become unacceptable to the Lord, will have to be restored back to its God ordained form and manner for it to become acceptable to the Lord and again become a source of blessings.

This is not the only instance of such a pattern being given or used in God’s Word. A little later, in 1 Corinthians 15:1-4, as he comes towards concluding this letter, through the Holy Spirit, Paul recounts to them the basic Gospel. Throughout this letter, from the very beginning, he has been pointing out to them their errors and the way to correct them. Now as a general summation of it all, the Holy Spirit directs Paul to show them that the basic problem with them is that they have started overlooking the basic Gospel, the basis of their salvation and association with the Lord as His people. Since they had deviated away from the fact and implications of the Gospel, therefore, instead of looking to the Lord, they had started to look up to men and listen to them, providing Satan an opportunity to spread wrong teachings and false doctrines amongst them. In his letter to the Galatians (Galatians 2:1-10), Paul says that he went “by revelation” i.e., under instructions from God, to Jerusalem to share with them, to have a review with the elders in Jerusalem about the gospel he was preaching amongst the Gentiles. Although there was nothing wrong found in what he was preaching (2:6), but yet God deemed it necessary that a review be done. But this also provided an opportunity for Paul and Barnabas to not only have the approval but also the support and fellowship of the Church elders in Jerusalem.

In the next article we will see some more examples of this, and consider its practical application.

आरम्भिक बातों से संबंधित शिक्षाएँ  – 1

परिचय - 1

इस श्रृंखला, परमेश्वर के वचन से बढ़ोतरी, के आरम्भ के आरंभिक विचारों में, हमने देखा था कि अपने आत्मिक उन्नति और बढ़ोतरी के लिए प्रत्येक मसीही विश्वासी को परमेश्वर के सम्पूर्ण वचन से अवगत होना चाहिए; जैसे-जैसे वह परमेश्वर के वचन में बढ़ेगा वह अपने आत्मिक जीवन में भी बढ़ता और परिपक्व होता चला जाएगा। क्योंकि कलीसिया मसीही विश्वासियों का समूह है, इसलिए जैसे-जैसे विश्वासी आत्मिक रीति से बढ़ते और परिपक्व होते हैं, वैसे-वैसे कलीसिया भी आत्मिक रीति से परिपक्व होगी, उसमें बढ़ोतरी होगी। हमने यह भी देखा था कि तीन प्रकार की बाइबल की शिक्षाएँ मसीही जीवन में बढ़ोतरी और परिपक्वता के लिए आधारभूत हैं। ये हैं: सुसमाचार से सम्बन्धित शिक्षाएँ; आरम्भिक बातों से सम्बन्धित शिक्षाएँ; व्यवहारिक मसीही जीवन जीने से सम्बन्धित शिक्षाएँ। इन तीन प्रकार की शिक्षाओं में से हमने पिछले लेख में सुसमाचार से सम्बन्धित शिक्षाओं के अध्ययन का समापन किया है। आज से हम दूसरे प्रकार की शिक्षाओं को देखना आरम्भ कर रहे हैं, अर्थात इब्रानियों 6:1-2 में दी गई छः प्रकार की आरम्भिक बातों से सम्बन्धित शिक्षाएँ। इससे पहले कि हम बारी-बारी से इन छः आरंभिक बातों को देखना आरम्भ करें, इनके परिचय के रूप में इससे से ठीक पहले के खण्ड, इब्रानियों 5:11-14, पर थोड़ा विचार करना लाभदायक रहेगा

इब्रानियों 5 के इस खण्ड में, इब्रानी विश्वासियों को लिखी इस पत्री का लेखक उन्हें फटकार लगाता है, क्योंकि वह उन्हें इब्रानियों 5 के पहले दस पदों के विषय, याजकीय सेवकाई और मलिकिसिदक, के बारे में सिखाने में अपने आप को असमर्थ पा रहा था। लेखक पद 11 में उन से कहता है, कि उसके पास कहने के लिए तो बहुत कुछ है और उन बातों को समझना भी कठिन है क्योंकि वे, अर्थात उसके पाठक ऊँचा सुनने लगे हैं। उनसे यह कहने के द्वारा “कि तुम ऊंचा सुनने लगे हो” लेखक यह सन्देश दे रहा है कि एक समय पर वे लोग इन शिक्षाओं को ग्रहण करने योग्य और परिपक्व थे, किन्तु अब उनकी आत्मिक परिपक्वता गिर गई है और वे “ऊँचा सुनने” लगे हैं, अर्थात सीखने में धीमे हो गए हैं। दूसरे शब्दों में, अब वे उन्हें जो सिखाया जाता है, उसे ग्रहण कर पाने और समझने के योग्य नहीं रह गए हैं।

यह हमारे सामने परमेश्वर के वचन को सीखने और अध्ययन करने से सम्बन्धित एक महत्वपूर्ण बात को लाता है कि, व्यक्ति परमेश्वर के वचन को सीखने और समझने में उन्नति भी कर सकता है और कमज़ोर पड़कर नीचे गिर भी सकता है। ध्यान कीजिए कि इस पत्री का लेखक अपने पाठकों से यह नहीं कह रहा है कि उन्होंने अपना विश्वास खो दिया है, अविश्वासी हो गए हैं; न ही वह उनसे यह कह रहा है कि वास्तव में वे कभी विश्वास में थे ही नहीं, और अब उनकी वास्तविकता प्रकट हो गई है क्योंकि वे अपने आप को उन्हें दी गईं परमेश्वर के वचन की शिक्षाओं में बनाए नहीं रख सके। किन्तु किसी कारण से उनके आत्मिक जीवनों में एक निष्क्रियता आ गई थी, और वे ऊँचा सुनने या सीखने में धीमे हो गए थे। इसलिए शिक्षा यही है कि मसीही विश्वासियों को परमेश्वर के वचन का अध्ययन करने और उसे सीखने में रुचि बनाए रखनी चाहिए, सक्रिय रहना चाहिए, अन्यथा उन्होंने जो सीखा है, उसे वे शीघ्र ही भूल जाएँगे, तथा उससे ऊपर के स्तर की शिक्षाओं को नहीं समझने पाएँगे, क्योंकि उसके लिए मौलिक बातों का आधार होना आवश्यक है। इससे हमारे सामने यह महत्वपूर्ण बात भी आती है कि केवल परमेश्वर के वचन को सुनना मात्र ही काफी नहीं है। प्रत्येक मसीही विश्वासी को उस पर मनन भी करना चाहिए, उसे याद रखना चाहिए, उसकी जुगाली करते रहना चाहिए, तब ही वह वचन से अधिकाई से प्राप्त कर सकेगा। जैसा कि यशायाह में लिखा है, नियम पर नियम रख कर शिक्षा को बनाया जाता है (यशायाह 28:10); इसके लिए आधारभूत शिक्षाओं में स्थापित होना अनिवार्य है, तब ही गूढ़ बातें सीखी जा सकती हैं। यदि मौलिक बातें खो गईं, तो फिर गूढ़ बातों को न तो ग्रहण किया जा सकता है, और न समझा जा सकता है। इसीलिए इसके बाद के पदों में लेखक आधारभूत बातों पर लौटने पर जोर देता है, और इसे हम अगले लेख में देखेंगे।

Teachings Related to the Elementary Principles – 1

Introduction - 1

 

At the beginning of this series on Growth through the Word of God, in the preliminary considerations, we had seen that for their spiritual growth, every Christian Believer ought to be well versed in the whole of God’s Word; as he grows in God’s Word, he will also mature and grow in his spiritual life. Since the Church is the congregation of the Christian Believers, therefore, as the Believers mature and grow spiritually, the Church will also mature and grow spiritually. We had also seen that three categories of Biblical teachings are fundamental for Christian growth and maturity. These are: Teachings related to the gospel; Teachings related to the elementary principles; Teachings related to practical Christian living. Of these three categories, we have concluded about the teachings related to the gospel in the last article. From today we are starting on the second category, i.e., teachings related to the six elementary principles, that are given in Hebrews 6:1-2. Before we start on these six principles, one-by-one, it will be helpful to see the immediately preceding section, Hebrews 5:11-14, as an introduction to these principles.

In this section of Hebrews 5, the author of the letter to the Hebrew Believers chides his readers, since he finds himself unable to explain to them about the Priesthood and Melchizedek – the subject of the first ten verses of Hebrews 5. The author, in verse 11 says to them that he has much to say, but is finding it hard to explain, since they – the readers, have become dull of hearing. By saying to them that “you have become dull of hearing” the author is indicating that at one time they were capable and mature to receive these teachings, but now their spiritual maturity has come down and they have become “dull of hearing;” or, as the NIV puts it, “slow to learn.” In other words, although there was time when they were capable of it, but now they are no longer capable of receiving and comprehending that which is taught to them.

This brings before us an important thing to keep in mind about studying and learning God’s Word; a person can both, grow strong, as well as grow weak and come down in his learning and understanding of God’s Word. Notice, that the author of this letter is not saying to his readers that they have lost their faith, become unbelievers; nor is he saying that since they never were actually in the faith, therefore, eventually their truth became apparent and they could not maintain themselves in the teachings of God’s Word given to them. But for some reason there was a stagnation in their spiritual lives, and they became dull of hearing or slow to learn. So, the lesson is that Christian Believers have to actively maintain their interest in studying and learning God’s Word, otherwise they will soon forget what they had learnt, and will not be able to comprehend the higher level of teachings, which require the basics to build up on. This also brings before us another important aspect, merely listening to God’s Word is not enough. Every Believer needs to meditate upon it, keep remembering and ruminating over it, to get the most out of it. As it says in Isaiah precept is built upon precept (Isaiah 28:10); it requires being well grounded in the basics, to learn the deeper things. If the basics are lost, then higher things cannot be received and comprehended. That is why in the subsequent verses the author emphasizes going back to learn the basics, and we will consider about this in the next article.

If you have not yet accepted the discipleship of the Lord, make your decision in favor of the Lord Jesus now to ensure your eternal life and heavenly blessings. Where there is obedience to the Lord, where there is respect and obedience to His Word, there is also the blessing and protection of the Lord. Repenting of your sins, and asking the Lord Jesus for forgiveness of your sins, voluntarily and sincerely, surrendering yourself to Him - is the only way to salvation and heavenly life. You only have to say a short but sincere prayer to the Lord Jesus Christ willingly and with a penitent heart, and at the same time completely commit and submit your life to Him. You can also make this prayer and submission in words something like, “Lord Jesus, I am sorry for my sins and repent of them. I thank you for taking my sins upon yourself, paying for them through your life.  Because of them you died on the cross in my place, were buried, and you rose again from the grave on the third day for my salvation, and today you are the living Lord God and have freely provided to me the forgiveness, and redemption from my sins, through faith in you. Please forgive my sins, take me under your care, and make me your disciple. I submit my life into your hands." Your one prayer from a sincere and committed heart will make your present and future life, in this world and in the hereafter, heavenly and blessed for eternity.

    पवित्र आत्मा की अगुवाई में पौलुस प्रेरित ने लिखा है “जिन को हम मनुष्यों के ज्ञान की सिखाई हुई बातों में नहीं, परन्तु आत्मा की सिखाई हुई बातों में, आत्मिक बातें आत्मिक बातों से मिला मिला कर सुनाते हैं।” इस पद का आरंभिक वाक्यांश “जिन को हम ” में प्रयुक्त “जिन”, पद 12 के संदर्भ में प्रकट है कि “उन बातों को जानें, जो परमेश्वर ने हमें दी हैं” के लिए है। यहाँ पर ध्यान दीजिए कि पौलुस बहुवचन सर्वनाम “हम” लिखता है, न कि अपेक्षित एकवचन सर्वनाम “मैं”। यह इस बात का संकेत करता है कि पौलुस और उसकी सेवकाई में उसके सहकर्मी भी, सभी अपनी सेवकाई में पवित्र आत्मा के इस निर्देश का पालन करते थे, और यह पौलुस का कोई व्यक्तिगत विचार या कार्य-शैली मात्र नहीं था। अर्थात, पौलुस कह रहा है कि पद 12 का “उन बातों को जानें, जो परमेश्वर ने हमें दी हैं” उसके तथा उसके साथियों के प्रचार और शिक्षाओं की सामग्री था। क्योंकि यह हमारी भी शिक्षा और उपयोग के लिए, अनन्त काल के लिए परमेश्वर के वचन में लिखवाया गया है, इसलिए इसे निःसंकोच विश्वासियों के लिए पवित्र आत्मा से सीखने का एक तरीका स्वीकार किया जाना चाहिए – सभी विश्वासियों को परमेश्वर के द्वारा उन्हें दी गई बातों के बारे में सीखना है।

    लेकिन हम पौलुस, तथा पवित्र शास्त्र के अन्य लेखकों के लेखों से जानते हैं कि परमेश्वर के वचन में विश्वासियों को परमेश्वर द्वारा दी गई बातों के अतिरिक्त भी और बहुतेरे विषय लिए और सिखाए गए हैं। न तो पौलुस ने और न ही उसके साथियों ने अपने आप को केवल परमेश्वर द्वारा विश्वासियों को दी गई बातों के बारे में सिखाने तक ही सीमित रखा है। और परमेश्वर पवित्र आत्मा ने उन सभी को कई अन्य बातों के बारे में भी लिखने के लिए प्रेरणा दी है। इसलिए यह बात कहना, इस पद की न तो गलत व्याख्या है, और न ही पवित्र शास्त्र में दिए गए अन्य विषयों के संदर्भ में कोई विरोधाभास है।

    ऐसी परिस्थितियों में सामान्यतः हमारे मनों में आने वाले विचार के विपरीत, ध्यान कीजिए कि यहाँ पर पौलुस ने न तो यह कहा है और न ही यह अभिप्राय दिया है कि “हम केवल इन बातों के ही बारे में बोलेंगे।” ध्यान कीजिए, पौलुस ने यह पत्री कुरिन्थुस की मण्डली को उनकी गलतियाँ और अनुचित व्यवहार को सुधारने के लिए लिखी थी। जैसा कि हम पहले देख चुके हैं, पौलुस ने इस बात पर बल दिया है कि कुरिन्थुस के विश्वासी साँसारिक, अपरिपक्व, और बच्चों के समान व्यवहार करने वाले थे, और इसलिए वह उन्हें केवल “दूध” ही दे सका “अन्न” या ठोस भोजन नहीं (1 कुरिन्थियों 3:1-3), क्योंकि वे न तो उसे ग्रहण कर सकते थे और न ही पचा सकते थे। दूसरे शब्दों में, पवित्र शास्त्र में “अन्न” या ठोस भोजन के बारे में भी दिया गया है, किन्तु इन कुरिन्थियों को केवल “दूध” ही दिया जा सकता था। पौलुस और उसके साथियों के द्वारा, परमेश्वर द्वारा उन्हें दी गई बातों के बारे में जो शिक्षाएँ हैं, तात्पर्य यही है कि वे उस “दूध” का ही एक भाग हैं जो पौलुस उन्हें दे रहा था; ये उस “अन्न” या ठोस भोजन का भाग नहीं हैं जो बाद में आना था, जब वे परिपक्व हो जाते और साँसारिक नहीं रहते।

    इसलिए हमारे लिए शिक्षा यह है कि परमेश्वर ने जो बातें मसीही विश्वासियों को दी हैं, उनके बारे में सीखना मसीही विश्वासियों की बुनियादी या आरंभिक शिक्षाओं का भाग हैं; किन्तु इस से यह नहीं समझना चाहिए कि विश्वासियों को केवल उन्हें ही सीखना है। ये तो मूल बातों का एक भाग हैं, और उन्नत बातें आगे आएंगी जब विश्वासी आत्मिक जीवन में परिपक्व होंगे। इसलिए यहाँ पर पद 13 के इस आरंभिक वाक्यांश को समझने में न तो कोई गलत व्याख्या है, और न ही अन्य पवित्र शास्त्र के साथ कोई विरोधाभास है। अगले लेख में हम इस से और आगे देखेंगे।

Learning from the Holy Spirit – 21

 

    In the previous article we have seen that Christian Believers, the stewards of the Holy Spirit, in whom He resides since their moment of salvation, are to learn about all things that God has freely given to them. God the Holy Spirit has been given to them to be their Helper, Companion, Teacher, and Guide in living their Christian lives and fulfilling their God given ministry; and as their Teacher, He teaches them about all things. We are presently considering 1 Corinthians 12:12-14 to learn how we can learn from the Holy Spirit. In the previous two article we have considered verse 12, and in the last article we have seen that it is expected of the Christian Believer that he will learn about all that God has given to him, including learning about the Holy Spirit, to worthily utilize God’s gifts. The second thing we saw from verse 12 was that no worldly or human spirit can make known to the Believers about the things given to them by God. Therefore, it is not only futile for Believers to try and learn from anyone but the Holy Spirit about them, but doing so is also disbelieving on God’s Word. The third thing we learnt from verse 12 was that ignoring the ministry of the Holy Spirit and going after learning from men and their works, is demeaning the Holy Spirit, insulting God, being disobedient to Him. From today we will take up verse 13 of this passage and learn further about learning from the Holy Spirit.

    The Apostle Paul under the guidance of the Holy Spirit says in verse 13, “These things we also speak, not in words which man's wisdom teaches but which the Holy Spirit teaches, comparing spiritual things with spiritual.” The first phrase of this verse is “These things we also speak” and from the context of verse 12, it is apparent that the “These things” that Paul is mentioning are “the things that have been freely given to us by God” of verse 12. Notice that in this first phrase of verse 13 Paul uses the pronoun “we” i.e., plural, instead of the expected singular “I”. This indicates that Paul and his ministry companions, all followed this guidance of the Holy Spirit in their ministry, and this was not just Paul’s personal opinion or way of doing things. So, what Paul is saying is that “the things that have been freely given to us by God” of verse 12 formed the contents of the preaching and teaching he and his companions used to do. Since this has been recorded in God’s Word for all times, for our learning and utilizing as well, therefore, it can safely be accepted as a method that God the Holy Spirit wants followed – the Believers have to learn about what God has freely given to them.

    But we also see from Paul’s writings, and those of the other authors of the Scriptures, that there is a very wide range of subjects covered and taught in God’s Word, over and above about the things that God has freely given to the Believers. Neither Paul, nor his companions and the others have restricted themselves to preaching and teachings just those things given by God to the Believers. And God the Holy Spirit has inspired them all to write about the other things as well. This is neither due to a misinterpretation of this first phrase of verse 13, nor a contradiction with the other topics taught in the Scriptures.

    Quite unlike the thought that commonly comes to our minds in such situations, Paul neither says nor implies “we only speak about these things.” Remember, Paul has written this letter to the Corinthians Church to correct their errors and wrong practices. As we have seen earlier, Paul emphasizes in this letter that the Corinthian Believers were carnal, immature, and child-like, and therefore he could only give them “milk” and could not give them “sold food” (1 Corinthians 3:1-3), since they were incapable of receiving and digesting it. In other words, in the Scriptures, “solid food” has also been written about, but these Corinthians Believers required to only be fed the “milk.” Paul and his companion’s teaching to them about the things that God has given to them, therefore implies that these things comprised a part of that “milk” that Paul was feeding them; it was not a part of the “solid food” that would come later, once they matured and were not carnal anymore.

    Therefore, the lesson for us is that learning about what God has given to the Christian Believers is part of the basic teachings that every Christian Believer should learn; but by no means is it the only thing that they have to learn. These are just a part of the basics; the advanced will follow as they grow spiritually. So, there is neither a misinterpretation nor a contradiction here in understanding this first phrase. We will carry on from here in the next article.
