प्रभु यीशु की कलीसिया - संसार और सांसारिकता से पृथक (1)   

    प्रभु यीशु की कलीसिया में, प्रभु यीशु द्वारा व्यक्ति के जोड़े जाने साथ ही, उस सच्चे और वास्तविक मसीही विश्वासी के जीवन में कुछ बातों की उपस्थिति भी अनिवार्य और आवश्यक हो जाती है। प्रभु का जन कहलाए जाने वाले व्यक्ति के जीवन में इन बातों की उपस्थिति यह दिखाती और प्रमाणित करती है कि वह प्रभु का जन है, प्रभु की कलीसिया में प्रभु द्वारा जोड़ा गया है। इन बातों के द्वारा वह जन अपने मसीही जीवन में बढ़ता जाता है, प्रभु की कलीसिया के लिए उपयोगी बना रहता है, और उसके द्वारा अन्य लोग भी प्रभु की निकटता में आने लगते हैं। प्रेरितों 2 अध्याय में प्रथम कलीसिया स्थापित हो जाने के साथ ही उन प्रथम विश्वासियों के जीवनों में भी ये सात बातें दिखने लगीं थीं, और तब से लेकर आज तक संसार के हर स्थान में प्रभु की कलीसिया के प्रत्येक सच्चे सदस्य में ये सात बातें होना ही उसके वास्तविक मसीही विश्वासी होने का प्रमाण रही हैं (प्रेरितों 2:39)। ये सात बातें हमें प्रेरितों 2:38-42 में मिलती है, और इनमें से पद 38 में दी गई पहली दो, पापों के लिए पश्चाताप और बपतिस्मे द्वारा मसीही विश्वास में आ जाने की सार्वजनिक गवाही देने से संबंधित कुछ बातों को हम पिछले लेखों में देख चुके हैं।

    तीसरी बात प्रेरितों 2:40 में दी गई है - उसने बहुत ओर बातों में भी गवाही दे देकर समझाया कि अपने आप को इस टेढ़ी जाति से बचाओ; अर्थात, बुरे और प्रभु विरोधी लोगों से अलग होकर प्रभु के साथ और उसकी आज्ञाकारिता में बने रहो। एक सच्चे मसीही विश्वासी का जीवन, संसार और सांसारिकता से बच कर रहने, संसार की नश्वर बातों से हटकर परमेश्वर के वचन के अनुसार चलने का जीवन होता है। मसीही विश्वासी हर परिस्थिति में प्रभु को महिमा देता है, उसके कार्य को, सुसमाचार को औरों तक पहुँचाने में संलग्न रहता है। 

    इस संदर्भ में बाइबल के कुछ पद देखते हैं:

    * जब पतरस और यूहन्ना को यहूदी धर्म के अगुवों ने प्रभु यीशु के बारे में कुछ भी कहने से मना किया, तब उनकी प्रतिक्रिया थी: तब उन्हें बुलाया और चितौनी देकर यह कहा, कि यीशु के नाम से कुछ भी न बोलना और न सिखलाना। परन्तु पतरस और यूहन्ना ने उन को उत्तर दिया, कि तुम ही न्याय करो, कि क्या यह परमेश्वर के निकट भला है, कि हम परमेश्वर की बात से बढ़कर तुम्हारी बात मानें। क्योंकि यह तो हम से हो नहीं सकता, कि जो हम ने देखा और सुना है, वह न कहें (प्रेरितों 4:18-20)।

    * जब उनसे फिर भी प्रभु यीशु के सुसमाचार का प्रचार करते रहने के विषय पूछा गया, तो उनका उत्तर: क्या हम ने तुम्हें चिताकर आज्ञा न दी थी, कि तुम इस नाम से उपदेश न करना? तौभी देखो, तुम ने सारे यरूशलेम को अपने उपदेश से भर दिया है और उस व्यक्ति का लहू हमारी गर्दन पर लाना चाहते हो। तब पतरस और, और प्रेरितों ने उत्तर दिया, कि मनुष्यों की आज्ञा से बढ़कर परमेश्वर की आज्ञा का पालन करना ही कर्तव्य कर्म है। (प्रेरितों 5:28-29)।

    * और जब अपने इस उत्तर के लिए वे पीटे गए, तो उनकी प्रतिक्रिया: तब उन्होंने उस की बात मान ली; और प्रेरितों को बुलाकर पिटवाया; और यह आज्ञा देकर छोड़ दिया, कि यीशु के नाम से फिर बातें न करना। वे इस बात से आनन्दित हो कर महासभा के सामने से चले गए, कि हम उसके नाम के लिये निरादर होने के योग्य तो ठहरे। और प्रति दिन मन्दिर में और घर घर में उपदेश करने, और इस बात का सुसमाचार सुनाने से, कि यीशु ही मसीह है न रुके। (प्रेरितों 5:40-42)।

    * स्तिफनुस के मारे जाने के बाद उस प्रथम कलीसिया पर भारी क्लेश आया, और उन सताए गए मसीही विश्वासियों की प्रतिक्रिया थी, उसी दिन यरूशलेम की कलीसिया पर बड़ा उपद्रव होने लगा और प्रेरितों को छोड़ सब के सब यहूदिया और सामरिया देशों में तित्तर बित्तर हो गए। (प्रेरितों 8:1); जो तित्तर बित्तर हुए थे, वे सुसमाचार सुनाते हुए फिरे। (प्रेरितों 8:4) - जिस बात के लिए वे सताए और बेघर किए गए, तित्तर बित्तर हो गए, वे उस बात से - अपने मसीही विश्वास और उसके दायित्व से पीछे नहीं हटे, वरन जहाँ भी गए, सुसमाचार सुनाते हुए ही गए।

    ये पद उन आरम्भिक मसीही विश्वासियों की प्रभु के प्रति प्रतिबद्धता को दिखाते हैं, कि किस प्रकार उन्होंने अपने आप को प्रभु के विरोधियों और संसार के लोगों से अलग रखते हुए, सब कुछ सहते हुए भी, प्रभु की सेवकाई पूरी निष्ठा के साथ की। 

    यदि आपने अभी तक प्रभु की शिष्यता को स्वीकार नहीं किया है, तो अपने अनन्त जीवन और स्वर्गीय आशीषों को सुनिश्चित करने के लिए अभी उसके पक्ष में अपना निर्णय कर लीजिए। जहाँ प्रभु की आज्ञाकारिता है, उसके वचन की बातों का आदर और पालन है, वहाँ प्रभु की आशीष और सुरक्षा भी है। यदि आपने अभी तक नया जन्म, उद्धार नहीं पाया है, प्रभु यीशु से अपने पापों के लिए क्षमा नहीं माँगी है, तो अभी आपके पास समय और अवसर है कि यह कर लें। प्रभु यीशु से अपने पापों के लिए क्षमा माँगकर, स्वेच्छा से तथा सच्चे मन से अपने आप को उसकी अधीनता में समर्पित कर दीजिए - उद्धार और स्वर्गीय जीवन का यही एकमात्र मार्ग है। आपको स्वेच्छा और सच्चे मन से प्रभु यीशु मसीह से केवल एक छोटी प्रार्थना करनी है, और साथ ही अपना जीवन उसे पूर्णतः समर्पित करना है। आप यह प्रार्थना और समर्पण कुछ इस प्रकार से भी कर सकते हैं, “प्रभु यीशु मैं आपका धन्यवाद करता हूँ कि आपने मेरे पापों की क्षमा और समाधान के लिए उन पापों को अपने ऊपर लिया, उनके कारण मेरे स्थान पर क्रूस की मृत्यु सही, गाड़े गए, और मेरे उद्धार के लिए आप तीसरे दिन जी भी उठे, और आज जीवित प्रभु परमेश्वर हैं। कृपया मेरे पापों को क्षमा करें, मुझे अपनी शरण में लें, और मुझे अपना शिष्य बना लें। मैं अपना जीवन आप के हाथों में समर्पित करता हूँ।” परमेश्वर आपके साथ संगति रखने की बहुत लालसा रखता है तथा आपको आशीषित देखना चाहता है, लेकिन इसे सम्भव करना आपका व्यक्तिगत निर्णय है। सच्चे और समर्पित मन से की गई आपकी एक प्रार्थना आपके वर्तमान तथा भविष्य को, इस लोक के और परलोक के जीवन को, अनन्तकाल के लिए स्वर्गीय एवं आशीषित बना देगी। क्या आप अभी समय और अवसर होते हुए, इस प्रार्थना को नहीं करेंगे? निर्णय आपका है।

English Translation

The Church of Lord Jesus - Separated from the World & Worldliness (1)

    Once a person gets joined to the Church of the Lord Jesus Christ, in the life of that true and actual Christian Believer, the presence of certain things becomes necessary and important. In the life of the person known as a person of the Lord God, the presence of these things demonstrates and proves that he really is a person of God and has been joined into the Church by the Lord. Through these things, that person grows in his Christian life, remains useful for the Church, and through him others too are attracted to the Church. In Acts 2, with the establishment of the first Church, in the lives of those initial Christian Believers, these seven things were seen; and since then, till now, all over the world, in every true and actual member of the Church of the Lord Jesus Christ, these seven things have remained the hallmark of every Born-Again child of God (Acts 2:39). We see these seven things in Acts 2:38-42; and of these we have seen the first two, given in Acts 2:38 - repentance from sins, and publicly witnessing about coming to faith in Christ Jesus through baptism, in the previous articles.

    The third thing is given in Acts 2:40 - And with many other words he testified and exhorted them, saying, "Be saved from this perverse generation"; i.e., separate out from the evil people and opponents of the Lord, and remain obedient to the Lord God. The life of a true Christian Believer is a life of living in accordance with the Word of God, obedient to the Lord, separated from the world, worldliness, and its temporal things. A true Christian Believer is to glorify the Lord God in and through all situations and circumstances of life, and always be involved in propagating the gospel, telling the world about the works of the Lord.

    Consider some Bible verses in this context:

    * When the Jewish religious leaders forbade Peter and John to say or preach anything about the Lord Jesus, their response was: And they called them and commanded them not to speak at all nor teach in the name of Jesus. But Peter and John responded by saying to them, "Whether it is right in the sight of God to listen to you more than to God, you judge. For we cannot but speak the things which we have seen and heard (Acts 4:18-20).

    * When they were once again brought before them, and were questioned about continuing to preach the Gospel of the Lord Jesus, they answered, saying, "Did we not strictly command you not to teach in this name? And look, you have filled Jerusalem with your doctrine, and intend to bring this Man's blood on us!" But Peter and the other apostles answered and said: "We ought to obey God rather than men" (Acts 5:28-29).

    * And, when they were beaten up for this answer, there reaction was: And they agreed with him, and when they had called for the apostles and beaten them, they commanded that they should not speak in the name of Jesus, and let them go. So, they departed from the presence of the council, rejoicing that they were counted worthy to suffer shame for His name. And daily in the temple, and in every house, they did not cease teaching and preaching Jesus as the Christ. (Acts 5:40-42).

    * After the martyrdom of Stephen, a great persecution came upon the first Church, and the Believers were scattered all over; but even in this persecution and being scattered, their activity was, At that time a great persecution arose against the church which was at Jerusalem, (Acts 8:1); and they were all scattered throughout the regions of Judea and Samaria, except the apostles. Therefore, those who were scattered went everywhere preaching the word. (Acts 8:4). They did not give up on the very thing for which they were persecuted and scattered, they continued to fulfill their responsibility of propagating the gospel, wherever they went.

    These verses illustrate the commitment those initial Christian Believers had towards the Lord, how having separated themselves from the opponents of the Lord and the people of the world, they continued with full integrity in their ministry for the Lord, despite all the sufferings they had to go through. 

    If you have not yet accepted the discipleship of the Lord Jesus, then take a decision in its favor now to secure your eternal life and heavenly blessings. The Lord's security and blessings are present where there is obedience of the Lord, where His Word is honored and followed. If you are still not Born Again, have not obtained salvation, or have not asked the Lord Jesus for forgiveness for your sins, then you have the time and opportunity to do so right now. Ask the Lord Jesus to forgive your sins, and voluntarily and sincerely surrender yourselves into His hands - this is the only way to salvation and heavenly life. All you have to do is say a short prayer, voluntarily and with a sincere heart, with heartfelt repentance for your sins, and a fully submissive attitude. You can do this in this manner, “Lord Jesus, I confess that I have disobeyed You, and have knowingly or unknowingly, in mind, in thought, in attitude, and in deeds, committed sins. I believe that you have fully borne the punishment of my sins by your sacrifice on the cross, and have paid the full price of those sins for all eternity. Please forgive my sins, change my heart and mind towards you, and make me your disciple, take me with you." God longs for your company and wants to see you blessed, but to make this possible, is your personal decision. One prayer said with a sincere and surrendered heart will turn your present and future, your life here on earth and in the next world, forever and make you heavenly and blessed. Will you not say this prayer now, while you have the time and opportunity to do so? The decision is yours.

बपतिस्मे के द्वारा गवाही - 2

पिछले लेख से हमने प्रभु द्वारा निर्धारित उसकी कलीसिया से जुड़ने की प्रक्रिया के सात कदमों में से दूसरे, बपतिस्मा, पर विचार करना आरम्भ किया था। पश्चाताप और बपतिस्मा प्रेरितों 2:38 में दिए गए दो कदम हैं, जिन्हें पतरस ने उन भक्त यहूदियों को बताया था, जिनके हृदय छिद गए थे और वे जानना चाहते थे कि अब आगे क्या करें।  बपतिस्मे से सम्बन्धित बाइबल के विभिन्न पदों के द्वारा, पिछले लेख में हमने देखा था कि बाइबल में जिस बपतिस्मे की माँग की गई है वह हमेशा ही वयस्कों का हुआ है, कभी भी किसी बच्चे अथवा शिशु का नहीं; हमेशा ही पानी अन्दर जाने और फिर बाहर आने के द्वारा, अर्थात, डुबकी का हुआ है; और हमेशा केवल उनका ही हुआ है जिन्होंने पहले प्रभु यीशु को अपना उद्धारकर्ता स्वीकार कर लिया और अपने जीवन उसे समर्पित कर दिए। आज हम बापतिसमे के इसी विषय से सम्बन्धित कुछ अन्य बातों को देखेंगे जिनको लेकर लोगों में अक्सर असमंजस रहता है। 

जो प्रभु के शिष्य बन गए, अर्थात जिन्होंने प्रभु यीशु को अपना उद्धारकर्ता स्वीकार कर लिया और अपना जीवन उन्हें समर्पित कर दिया, वे स्वतः ही, बपतिस्मा लेने से पहले ही प्रभु के अनुयायी, परमेश्वर की संतान (यूहन्ना 1:12-13), और जिस पल से वे प्रभु यीशु में विश्वासी हुए हैं उसी पल से स्वर्ग में जाने के अधिकारी हो गए। बाइबल की शिक्षाओं और उदाहरणों के अनुसार, बपतिस्मा न तो उद्धार प्रदान करता है, और न ही व्यक्ति को परमेश्वर की दृष्टि में धर्मी अथवा स्वीकार्य बनाता है – बपतिस्मा केवल प्रभु यीशु में लाए गए विश्वास के द्वारा बदले हुए जीवन की सार्वजनिक रीति से गवाही देने का एक माध्यम है। ध्यान कीजिए, क्रूस पर टंगे हुए डाकू ने पापों की क्षमा पाई, और स्वर्ग चला गया – बिना बपतिस्मा लिए। ऐसे न जाने कितने लोग होंगे जिन्होंने वास्तव में प्रभु पर विश्वास किया, पापों से पश्चाताप किया, किन्तु किसी-न-किसी कारण वश, कोई बाधा अथवा विपरीत परिस्थिति के कारण बपतिस्मा नहीं लेने पाए – किसी दुर्घटना के बाद, किसी युद्ध भूमि में घायल होने के बाद अंतिम साँसें लेते हुए; रेगिस्तान अथवा बर्फीले इलाके में प्रभु को ग्रहण करने पर भी बपतिस्मे की सुविधा न होने के कारण; किसी सुदूर एकांत के इलाके में रेडियो पर सुसमाचार सुनकर विश्वास करने किन्तु किसी अन्य विश्वासी जन के उनके पास या साथ न होने के कारण – ऐसी कितनी ही परिस्थितियाँ हो सकती हैं, जिनके अंतर्गत बपतिस्मा लेना कई बार संभव नहीं होता है, और मनुष्य चाह कर भी बपतिस्मा नहीं लेने पाता है। क्या ऐसे लोग केवल इसलिए स्वर्ग में प्रवेश नहीं पाएँगे, क्योंकि सांसारिक परिस्थितियों के कारण वे चाहते हुए भी बपतिस्मा नहीं लेने पाए? यदि क्रूस पर लटका हुआ डाकू पश्चाताप करके, बिना बपतिस्मा लिए स्वर्ग जा सकता है, तो अन्य कोई क्यों नहीं?

साथ ही, ध्यान कीजिए, शमौन टोन्हा करने वाले के समान (प्रेरितों 8:9-13, 18-24), सभी कलीसियाओं में ऐसे अनगिनत लोग हैं जिन्होंने रस्म के समान बपतिस्मा तो लिया, किन्तु उन्होंने सच्चा पश्चाताप कभी नहीं किया। बपतिस्मा लेने से उनके जीवनों में कोई परिवर्तन नहीं आया, वे अभी भी अपने पापों और सांसारिकता के जीवन में बने हुए हैं। वे प्रभु भोज में भी भाग लेते हैं, कलीसिया के सदस्य भी हैं, त्यौहार और पर्व भी मनाते हैं, किन्तु पाप और समझौते तथा सांसारिकता का जीवन भी जीते हैं। उनके बपतिस्मे से उन्हें क्या लाभ हुआ? क्या परमेश्वर उनके बपतिस्मे से मजबूर हो गया कि उसे अब उन्हें स्वर्ग में प्रवेश देना ही पड़ेगा, यद्यपि उनके जीवन दिखा रहे हैं कि उन्होंने उद्धार नहीं पाया है?

एक अन्य व्यर्थ बहस करने की बात बपतिस्मा प्रभु यीशु मसीह के नाम से दिया गया, या “पिता, पुत्र और पवित्र आत्मा” के नाम से को लेकर उठाई जाती है। मत्ती 28:19 के अनुसार, प्रभु यीशु मसीह के ही शब्दों में बपतिस्मा “पिता, पुत्र, और पवित्र आत्मा” के नाम से दिया जाना है – ये तीनों ही त्रिएक परमेश्वर के स्वरूप हैं और पूर्णतः एक समान हैं, कोई भी दूसरे से न तो भिन्न है और न किसी रीति से कम है। यही “त्रिएक परमेश्वर” जब इस धरती पर अवतरित होकर सदेह आया, तो परमेश्वर की आज्ञा के अनुसार उसका नाम “यीशु” रखा गया; अर्थात “यीशु” त्रिएक परमेश्वर ही का नाम है, जो उसके उद्धारकर्ता स्वरूप को दिखाता है (मत्ती 1:21)। इसलिए चाहे तीनों का नाम लो, या किसी एक का, अभिप्राय तो उसी एक परमेश्वर को आदर देने और उसकी आज्ञाकारिता को पूरा करना है। इसलिए कोई फर्क नहीं पड़ता है कि केवल प्रभु यीशु मसीह के नाम से बपतिस्मा दिया/लिया जाए, या तीनों, पिता, पुत्र और पवित्र आत्मा के नाम से कहकर दिया/लिया जाए, बात एक ही है; विशेषकर जब, जैसा हम ऊपर देख चुके हैं बपतिस्मा उद्धार मिलने के लिए अनिवार्य है ही नहीं। यह शिक्षा, कि केवल यीशु के नाम में दिया गया बपतिस्मा ही सही है अन्यथा नहीं, Jesus Only समुदाय के द्वारा फैलाई जाती रही है; और ये लोग त्रिएक परमेश्वर पर विश्वास नहीं रखते हैं। वे केवल यीशु ही को मानते हैं, इसलिए त्रिएक परमेश्वर के अस्तित्व और बातों पर जहाँ और जैसे संभव है, संदेह उत्पन्न करते हैं, और बाइबल के त्रिएक परमेश्वर के तथ्य के विरोध में धारणाएं उत्पन्न करते हैं। और उनके इसी प्रयास की एक कड़ी उनके द्वारा बपतिस्मे के बारे फैलाई जाने वाली यह गलत शिक्षा है।

परमेश्वर के नाम, तथा पानी के स्थान के साथ बपतिस्मे को जायज़-नाजायज़ दिखाना, शैतान के द्वारा लोगों को गलत शिक्षाओं और व्यर्थ के वाद-विवादों में फंसा कर, उनका ध्यान कर्मों की धार्मिकता की ओर लगाने का प्रयास है, जिससे वे परमेश्वर के अनुग्रह से मिलने वाली क्षमा और धार्मिकता की सादगी और आशीष से निकलकर व्यर्थ के अनुचित कर्मों में फँसे रहें, आपस में विवाद करते, लड़ते रहें, पापों से पश्चाताप के स्थान पर विधि-विधानों के निर्वाह के चक्करों में पड़कर प्रभु के मार्गों से भटक जाएँ। इन बातों को ध्यान में रखते हुए, यह प्रकट है कि महत्व प्रभु यीशु मसीह की आज्ञाकारिता में होकर बपतिस्मे को लेने का है, बपतिस्मे के समय किस या किन नामों का उच्चारण किया जाता है, उसे बहते पाने में दिया/लिया जाता है अथवा खड़े पानी में, इन बातों का नहीं। इसलिए बपतिस्मे को अनावश्यक रीति से ऐसा कोई महत्व नहीं देना चाहिए जो प्रभु ने उसके लिए नहीं कहा अथवा सिखाया है। बपतिस्मा लेना प्रभु की आज्ञा है, और आज्ञाकारिता में आशीष है। किन्तु बपतिस्मा न लेने से उद्धार नहीं चला जाता है; और बपतिस्मा ले लेने से उद्धार नहीं मिल जाता है।

यदि आप एक मसीही विश्वासी हैं तो आपके लिए यह बिलकुल स्पष्ट समझना बहुत आवश्यक है कि प्रत्येक उद्धार पाए हुए मसीही विश्वासी को, समय और अवसर के अनुसार, प्रभु की आज्ञा के अनुसार बपतिस्मा अवश्य ही लेना है – अनुग्रह से मिले उद्धार को स्थापित करने के लिए नहीं, वरन उस उद्धार की सार्वजनिक गवाही देने के लिए। यह बपतिस्मा व्यक्ति चाहे पिता, पुत्र और पवित्र आत्मा के नाम से ले अथवा दे, या यीशु के नाम से; बहते पाने में ले या खड़े पानी में – इससे उसके उद्धार की दशा और परमेश्वर के साथ बने संबंध पर कोई फर्क नहीं पड़ने वाला है। किन्तु जैसे पश्चाताप के लिए, वैसे ही बपतिस्मे के लिए भी है - यह कोई रस्म का निर्वाह करना, एक औपचारिकता पूरी करना नहीं है। इसका आपना महत्व और उद्देश्य है, और इसे केवल प्रभु द्वारा सिखाई गई सीमाओं के अंतर्गत ही देखना, समझना, और निभाना चाहिए; इससे अधिक कोई और शिक्षा को इसके साथ जोड़ने या महत्व देने की कोई आवश्यकता नहीं है।

Witnessing through Baptism -2

In the previous article we began to consider baptism, the second of the seven step process for joining the Lord’s Church through His ordained way. Repentance and baptism are two steps given in Acts 2:38, stated by Peter to those devout Jews who were convicted and wanted to know what to do to be saved. From the various references related to baptism, in the last article we have seen that the baptism asked for in the Bible has always been of adults, never of infants or children; always through entering and coming out of water, i.e., immersion or water baptism; and always of those who have first accepted the Lord as their savior, and have surrendered their lives to Him. Today we will consider some other matters related to baptism that often create confusion amongst people.

Now, those who have become the disciples of the Lord Jesus, i.e., those who have received the Lord Jesus as their personal savior and have surrendered their lives to Him, they have already become the children of God (John 1:12-13), and are destined to be in heaven from the moment they have come into faith in the Lord Jesus, even before their having taken baptism. Biblically speaking, baptism neither saves anybody, nor makes anyone righteous and acceptable in the eyes of God. Baptism is nothing more than a method of giving a public testimony of a person’s coming into faith in the Lord Jesus and the inner change that has come into him because of his faith in the Lord. Take note, the thief who repented while hanging on the cross, received forgiveness from the Lord and went to heaven - without being baptized. There will be countless people all over the world, who have accepted the Lord Jesus as savior, believed in Him, have repented of their sins, but due to some reason, due to some problem or impediment, could not be baptized despite being desirous of and willing for it, e.g., after being involved in an accident, or being wounded on a battlefield and taking their last breaths; or having accepted Jesus as Lord in some desert or snow-bound area where they could not be baptized; or having heard the gospel in some remote distant area through radio transmission, where there was no one to baptize them - there can be so many different situations and circumstances in which it may not be possible for a person to get baptized, although wanting to get it done. Will all such people be denied entry into heaven just because despite truly having repented of sins, having come into faith and having accepted the Lord Jesus as savior, due to some earthly situation or circumstance, they could not get baptized? If the thief on the cross could repent and go to heaven, without getting baptized, then why can’t anyone else?

Also take note that like Simon the sorcerer (Acts 8:9-13, 18-24), in every local Church there are numerous people who have taken baptism ritualistically, but have never ever truly repented of their sins. Their taking of baptism has not brought any change in their lives, they are still living in their sins, in worldliness. They partake of the Holy Communion, are members of their local Church, celebrate the traditions, feasts, and festivals, but also live a life of compromising with the world and in sin. Of what benefit is their baptism for them? Has their baptism put God under a compulsion to accept them into heaven, although their lives are demonstrating that they never came into faith in the Lord Jesus?

Another point of contention related to baptism is whether it has been administered “in the name of Jesus”, or, “in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit”! According to Matthew 28:19, in the words of the Lord Jesus Christ, baptism was to be given “in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit” - all three of them are God, co-equal in every manner, none is less than or different than the other. This “Triune” God, when He was born on earth as a man, His incarnation was named “Jesus” by divine instructions (Matthew 1:21). In other words, “Jesus” is the name of the Triune God that depicts His being the Savior of the world. Therefore, whether one takes the name of all three, or of anyone, it is the same God who is being honored and obeyed. So then, what difference will it make if baptism is given “in the name of Jesus”, or, “in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit”; more so, when as we have seen above baptism has nothing to do with obtaining salvation? This wrong teaching has been spread by the “Jesus Only” group, because they do not believe in the Triune God. Since they Believe only in the Lord Jesus, therefore wherever possible they create doubts and confusions about the teachings related to the Holy Trinity, i.e., the Triune God; they create and spread concepts that speak against the Biblical fact of Trinity. One of their false doctrines is this confusion they have spread about the name under which baptism is to be administered.

If one carefully considers these issues, it becomes apparent that through trying to show baptism to be valid or invalid because of the name it has been administered in, the place it has been administered in, etc. Satan has tried to beguile people away into vain arguments and dissensions, into trusting in righteousness of works. These are satanic ploys to turn the minds of people away from the salvation by grace of God through simple faith in the Lord Jesus Christ; to get them entangled in trying to be acceptable to God through vain works and methodologies; to get entangled in unnecessary disputes, keep fighting amongst themselves, instead of preaching and propagating the gospel, as they ought to be doing. By keeping these things in mind, it is clear that what is important is the taking of baptism to fulfill the commandment of the Lord Jesus; and not what names were being spoken while administering it and whether it was taken in flowing or still water. Therefore, besides what the Lord Jesus has said and instructed, no other unnecessary and unintended importance should be attached to baptism. Being baptized is a commandment of the Lord, and obeying the Lord brings blessings. But baptism neither gives salvation; nor, not being baptized takes salvation away.

If you are a Christian Believer, then as instructed by the Lord Jesus, it is essential that every Born-Again Believer take baptism at the first available opportunity - not to confirm or establish the salvation received by the grace of God, but to publicly witness for it. Whether this baptism is taken “in the name of Jesus”, or, “in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit”; in flowing water or still water - will not impact the state of salvation of the person one way or the other. As it is for repentance, similarly for baptism too, taking or giving baptism is not a formality to be fulfilled, it is not merely for keeping a tradition. Baptism has its purpose and importance, and other than what has been taught by the Lord, no other concepts and teachings should be attached to it and given undue importance.

If you have not yet accepted the discipleship of the Lord Jesus, then take a decision in its favor now to secure your eternal life and heavenly blessings. The Lord's security and blessings are present where there is obedience of the Lord, where His Word is honored and followed. If you are still not Born Again, have not obtained salvation, or have not asked the Lord Jesus for forgiveness for your sins, then you have the time and opportunity to do so right now. Ask the Lord Jesus to forgive your sins, and voluntarily and sincerely surrender yourselves into His hands - this is the only way to salvation and heavenly life. All you have to do is say a short prayer, voluntarily and with a sincere heart, with heartfelt repentance for your sins, and a fully submissive attitude. You can do this in this manner, “Lord Jesus, I confess that I have disobeyed You, and have knowingly or unknowingly, in mind, in thought, in attitude, and in deeds, committed sins. I believe that you have fully borne the punishment of my sins by your sacrifice on the cross, and have paid the full price of those sins for all eternity. Please forgive my sins, change my heart and mind towards you, and make me your disciple, take me with you." God longs for your company and wants to see you blessed, but to make this possible, is your personal decision. One prayer said with a sincere and surrendered heart will turn your present and future, your life here on earth and in the next world, forever and make you heavenly and blessed. Will you not say this prayer now, while you have the time and opportunity to do so? The decision is yours.

पिछले लेखों से हम देख चुके हैं कि प्रभु यीशु की कलीसिया में कोई भी, किसी भी रीति अथवा विधि के द्वारा स्वतः ही नहीं जुड़ सकता है। जिस प्रकार से प्रभु ने अपनी कलीसिया से संबंधित सभी बातों को स्वयं ही निर्धारित किया है, और स्वयं ही अपनी कलीसिया को प्रबंधित और संचालित भी करता है, उसी प्रकार से प्रभु अपनी कलीसिया में स्वयं ही लोगों को जोड़ता भी है (प्रेरितों 2:47)। प्रभु का जन, उसका शिष्य बनकर प्रभु की कलीसिया से जुड़ने का मार्ग और निमंत्रण संसार के सभी लोगों के लिए खुला है। कलीसिया में जोड़े जाने से संबंधित प्रक्रिया और बातें प्रभु द्वारा ही निर्धारित कर दी गई हैं। प्रथम कलीसिया की स्थापना से लेकर आज तक, सारे संसार के सभी स्थानों में प्रभु की कलीसिया के साथ जुड़ने के लिए प्रभु द्वारा स्थापित इसी एक प्रक्रिया का निर्वाह किया जाता है। प्रभु द्वारा निर्धारित और उपलब्ध करवाए गए तरीके के अतिरिक्त प्रभु की कलीसिया से जुड़ने का अन्य कोई तरीका नहीं है। इस प्रक्रिया में सात बातें हैं, जिन्हें परमेश्वर पवित्र आत्मा ने प्रेरितों 2:38-42 में लिखवाया है। इनमें से पहली दो बातें प्रेरितों 2:38 में दी गई हैं; और इन दोनों में से पहली बात, प्रभु की कलीसिया के साथ जुड़ने का आरंभ, प्रत्येक व्यक्ति द्वारा अपने पापों से पश्चाताप करना है, जिसे हम पिछले लेख में देख चुके हैं। उस लेख में हमने यह भी समझा है कि जिस पश्चाताप की यहाँ बात की गई है, वह वास्तविक पश्चाताप है। यह वास्तविक पश्चाताप, ईसाई समाज और संस्थाओं में सामान्यतः कुछ रीतियों की पूर्ति के समय, जैसे कि प्रभु-भोज या ‘पाक-आशा’ के समय औपचारिक रीति से दोहराए जाने वाले कुछ वाक्यों और खण्डों के पश्चाताप से, बहुत भिन्न है। ऐसा सांसारिक और औपचारिक पश्चाताप मृत्यु उत्पन्न करता है। हमने उस वास्तविक पश्चाताप के गुणों, पहचान, और प्रभाव के बारे में बाइबल से समझा है जो प्रभु की कलीसिया से जुड़ने के लिए अनिवार्य है। हमने यह भी देखा है कि  इसी पद, 2:38 में दूसरी बात भी लिखी गई है - हर एक पश्चाताप करने वाले के द्वारा यीशु मसीह के नाम से बपतिस्मा लेना।

परमेश्वर के वचन, बाइबल में जब भी बपतिस्मा लेने या देने की बात आई है, उसके साथ कुछ महत्वपूर्ण बातें भी जुड़ी हुई देखी जाती हैं, जिनकी अवहेलना करने के द्वारा बपतिस्मे को लेकर बहुत सी गलत शिक्षाएं बनाकर फैला दी गई हैं। इसलिए पहले यह समझना आवश्यक है कि बपतिस्मा क्यों लिया या दिया जाए; उसके बाद ही उसकी विधि, या नामों के प्रयोग, आदि का महत्व समझ में आ सकता है। पापों से पश्चाताप करने और प्रभु यीशु मसीह से पापों की क्षमा मांग लेने, उसे अपना जीवन समर्पित कर देने, और स्वेच्छा तथा सच्चे मन से उसकी अधीनता में जीवन जीने का निर्णय कर लेने के बाद, बपतिस्मा, व्यक्ति द्वारा किए गए अपने उस निर्णय की तथा उससे उसके जीवन में आए भीतरी परिवर्तन की केवल एक बाहरी सार्वजनिक गवाही मात्र है। 

मत्ती 28:18-20 में दिए गए क्रम को ध्यान से देखिए; यहाँ स्वयं प्रभु यीशु मसीह के शब्दों में, प्रभु ने पहले शिष्य बनाने को कहा, और फिर उन केवल  उन्हें जो उसके शिष्य बन चुके थे, बपतिस्मा देने के लिए कहा। प्रेरितों 2 में भी पतरस के प्रचार के बाद, जिन्होंने पश्चाताप किया और प्रभु को ग्रहण किया, केवल उन्हें ही बपतिस्मा दिया गया (प्रेरितों 2:41)। प्रेरितों 8 अध्याय में फिलिप्पुस द्वारा कूश देश के खोजे को प्रचार और शिक्षा देने की घटना दी गई है। जब खोजे ने फिलिप्पुस से बपतिस्मा लेने के बारे में पूछा तो फिलिप्पुस का उत्तर था "यदि तू सारे मन से विश्वास करता है तो हो सकता है।" खोजे ने कहा कि वह प्रभु यीशु को परमेश्वर का पुत्र स्वीकार करता है, और तब फिलिप्पुस ने उसे बपतिस्मा दिया (प्रेरितों 8:35-38)।  दमिश्क के मार्ग में प्रभु का दर्शन पाने, और उसे “प्रभु” स्वीकार करने के बाद ही पौलुस (उस समय शाऊल) को बपतिस्मा दिया गया (प्रेरितों 9:5, 18); इसी प्रकार से प्रेरितों 19:1-5 के वार्तालाप में प्रकट है कि पौलुस जिन से बात कर रहा था, उन्होंने प्रभु यीशु मसीह पर विश्वास कर लिया था। इन सभी उदाहरणों में वही क्रम दिया गया है - पहले प्रभु के शिष्य बनना, अर्थात उसे अपना उद्धारकर्ता स्वीकार कर लेना, और तब प्रभु यीशु के उन शिष्यों को ही बपतिस्मा दिया जाना।

यूहन्ना बपतिस्मा देने वाला यरदन नदी के आस-पास के क्षेत्र में बपतिस्मा देता था, और वहीं प्रभु यीशु का बपतिस्मा भी हुआ (यूहन्ना 1:28; 3:23; मत्ती 3:6, 13-16; मरकुस 1:5, 9-11; लूका 3:3)। प्रभु यीशु और उनके चेलों के द्वारा भी बपतिस्मा दिया जाने का उल्लेख है (यूहन्ना 3:22; 4:1-2), किन्तु यह नहीं लिखा गया है कि वे किस नदी अथवा जलाशय में बपतिस्मा देते थे। फिलिप्पुस ने सामरिया में बपतिस्मा दिया (प्रेरितों 8:12-13) किन्तु यह नहीं लिखा है कि किस नदी अथवा जलाशय में बपतिस्मा दिया गया। बाद में फिलिप्पुस ने कूश देश के खोजे को, मार्ग के किनारे के एक जलाशय में बपतिस्मा दिया (प्रेरितों 8:36-37)। किन्तु इन उदाहरणों से यह स्पष्ट है कि बपतिस्मा बहते या खड़े पानी, दोनों में ही दिया जा सकता है, इसमें कोई अनिवार्यता नहीं है कि बपतिस्मा किसी नदी में ही दिया जाए। इन हवालों से यह बात भी स्पष्ट है कि बपतिस्मा जहाँ भी दिया गया, वहाँ इतना पानी अवश्य होता था कि लोग उसमें उतर कर पानी के अंदर जा सकें, और बाहर आ सकें। कहीं पर भी छिड़काव का या पानी में उँगली भिगोकर माथे अथवा सिर पर क्रूस का निशान बना देने के द्वारा बपतिस्मा दिए जाने का बाइबल में कोई उदाहरण या उल्लेख नहीं है। बाइबल में कहीं पर भी किसी शिशु अथवा बच्चे के बपतिस्मे का उल्लेख नहीं है; हमेशा ही वयस्कों को, उनकी स्वेच्छा के अनुसार बपतिस्मा दिया गया। इससे यह भी प्रकट और स्पष्ट है कि शिशुओं या बच्चों का, छिड़काव या पानी से क्रूस का चिह्न बना देने द्वारा, और रीति या औपचारिकता पूरी करने के लिए लिया या दिया गया बपतिस्मा, बाइबल के अनुसार बपतिस्मा है ही नहीं, और ऐसे किसी भी बपतिस्मे की न तो बाइबल में कोई उल्लेख अथवा स्वीकृति है, और न ही कोई मान्यता अथवा महत्व है।

Witnessing through Baptism -1

We have seen in the previous articles that no one can join the Church of the Lord Jesus Christ on his own through fulfilling any rituals or ceremonies. Just as the Lord God has determined and established everything related to His Church, and He Himself manages and directs the functioning of His Church, similarly, it is the Lord who adds people to His Church (Acts 2:47). The way and the invitation to become a follower, a disciple of the Lord is open for every person in the world. The Lord has determined and given the process, the way of how anyone can join His Church. Since the establishment of the first Church, till date, all over the world, it is this one process that is followed for people to join the Lord’s Church. Besides this Lord ordained and given process, there is no other way to join the Lord's Church. There are seven steps in this process that have been given in Acts 2:38-42. The first two steps are given in Acts 2:38, of which the first, every person individually repenting of their sins, we have seen in the previous article. In that article we have also seen that the repentance given there is the actual heartfelt repentance. This actual repentance that has been stated here, is much different than the “the sorrow of the world produces death” i.e., a formal recitation of some words and passages that is commonly seen in Christendom, in many Christian organizations and denominational Churches, usually at the time of certain rituals, e.g., taking the Holy Communion. We have seen and understood the characteristics and effects of the true repentance which is mandatory for joining the Church of the Lord, and how to identify it. Today we will consider the second step of this process and also the second thing mentioned in Acts 2:38 - everyone who repents should take baptism in the name of the Lord Jesus.

In God’s Word the Bible, whenever the taking of baptism has been mentioned, certain related important things have been mentioned as well; and it is because of overlooking these associated important things that many wrong doctrines and false teachings have come about and been spread about baptism. The first thing we need to understand is why should baptism be taken? Only after properly understanding this can we really understand the way it is to be administered and under what names it is to be administered, etc. Once a person repents of his sins, asks the Lord Jesus for forgiveness of his sins, surrenders his life to the Lord willingly and fully, and commits himself to living in obedience to the Lord and His Word, after that baptism is only the external public witnessing to this inner decision and transformation that has come about in the person.

Consider carefully the sequence stated by the Lord Jesus in Matthew 28:18-20. Here we see, in the Lord Jesus’s own words that His disciples were to first go and make other disciples, and then baptize only those who had became His disciples. In the events of Acts 2 also, we see that after the preaching of Peter, only those who repented and accepted the Lord Jesus as their savior were baptized (Acts 2:41). In Acts 8, in the account of Philip preaching and teaching to the Ethiopian eunuch, when the eunuch expressed the desire to be baptized, Philip's response was "If you believe with all your heart, you may." When the eunuch replied that he believes in Jesus as the Son of God, Philip baptized him (Acts 8:36-38). On the way to Damascus, Paul, then called Saul, first accepted Jesus as “Lord” and after that he was baptized (Acts 9:5, 18). Similarly, in Acts 19:1-5, from the conversation between Paul and the people, it is quite clear that they had already believed in the Lord Jesus, and then they were baptized. In all these examples the same sequence is given - first become the disciples of the Lord Jesus, i.e., accept Him as Savior, and then as disciples, get baptized - always, in the Bible, only those who had repented and become disciples were baptized.

John the Baptist used to baptize in the region around the river Jordan, and the Lord Jesus too was baptized in that area (John 1:28; 3:23; Matthew 3:6, 13-16; Mark 1:5, 9-11; Luke 3:3). There is mention of the Lord and His disciples too baptizing (John 3:22; 4:1-2), but in which river, stream, pond, or water-body they baptized has not been mentioned. Phillip baptized in Samaria, but again, in which river, stream, pond, or water-body they baptized has not been mentioned. Later, Phillip baptized the Ethiopian Eunuch in some water-body on the road-side (Acts 8:36-37). But what is clear from these examples is that baptism could be given in both, flowing or still water; there is no necessity that it has to be administered only in a river. From these examples, another fact that is quite apparent is that wherever baptism was given, it was always in a place where people could go inside the water and come out of it. 

At no place in the Bible has the method of sprinkling water for baptizing, or of someone dipping their finger in water and then making the sign of the Cross on the head or forehead been mentioned. Also, there is no mention or example of any infant, baby, or child being baptized; always it has been adults who voluntarily came forward to get baptized, only they have been baptized. From this it is also evident and clear that in the Bible there is no mention of any infant or child baptism, neither of any baptism by sprinkling or making the sign of the cross with water, nor of any baptism taken or given as a ritual or done to fulfil a formality. In other words, any such infant, child, ritualistic baptism, or a baptism to fulfil a formality has neither been mentioned nor accepted in the Bible, any such baptism has not been given any recognition or importance in the Bible.

If you have not yet accepted the discipleship of the Lord Jesus, then take a decision in its favor now to secure your eternal life and heavenly blessings. The Lord's security and blessings are present where there is obedience of the Lord, where His Word is honored and followed. If you are still not Born Again, have not obtained salvation, or have not asked the Lord Jesus for forgiveness for your sins, then you have the time and opportunity to do so right now. Ask the Lord Jesus to forgive your sins, and voluntarily and sincerely surrender yourselves into His hands - this is the only way to salvation and heavenly life. All you have to do is say a short prayer, voluntarily and with a sincere heart, with heartfelt repentance for your sins, and a fully submissive attitude. You can do this in this manner, “Lord Jesus, I confess that I have disobeyed You, and have knowingly or unknowingly, in mind, in thought, in attitude, and in deeds, committed sins. I believe that you have fully borne the punishment of my sins by your sacrifice on the cross, and have paid the full price of those sins for all eternity. Please forgive my sins, change my heart and mind towards you, and make me your disciple, take me with you." God longs for your company and wants to see you blessed, but to make this possible, is your personal decision. One prayer said with a sincere and surrendered heart will turn your present and future, your life here on earth and in the next world, forever and make you heavenly and blessed. Will you not say this prayer now, while you have the time and opportunity to do so? The decision is yours.

पश्चाताप को समझना

हम पिछले लेखों में देख चुके हैं कि परमेश्वर की अनन्तकालीन आशीषों और स्वर्गीय जीवन का संभागी होने का एकमात्र मार्ग है प्रभु यीशु मसीह की कलीसिया का अंग, उसका सदस्य होना। प्रभु यीशु मसीह की कलीसिया का अंग होने, उसमें जुड़ने की प्रक्रिया, कोई रहस्यमय या गुप्त बात नहीं है जो केवल कुछ विशिष्ट लोगों पर ही प्रकट की गई है, या जिसे हर किसी पर प्रकट नहीं किया जाता है; बल्कि निमंत्रण सभी के लिए है, और मार्ग सभी के प्रवेश करने के लिए खोला गया है। न ही यह किसी व्यक्ति अथवा संस्था या डिनॉमिनेशन आदि के द्वारा अपने लिए स्वतः ही निर्धारित कर लेने वाली कोई बात है। जिस प्रकार से परमेश्वर अपनी कलीसिया की हर बात के संबंध में बिलकुल निश्चित और सटीक है, हर बात को स्वयं निर्धारित करता है, उन बातों में किसी प्रकार के परिवर्तन या छेड़-छाड़ को स्वीकार नहीं करता है, उसी प्रकार से उसकी कलीसिया में सम्मिलित होने की भी परमेश्वर द्वारा एक निर्धारित प्रक्रिया है, जिसे उसने अपने वचन में सभी के लिए प्रकट कर दिया है। प्रभु की प्रथम कलीसिया की स्थापना के वृतांत, प्रेरितों 2 अध्याय में यह स्पष्ट वर्णित है। जिस रीति से वह प्रथम कलीसिया स्थापित हुई, और प्रभु द्वारा उसमें लोग जोड़े गए; उसी प्रकार से तब से लेकर आज तक भी, संसार के हर स्थान से, प्रभु यीशु के द्वारा उसकी कलीसिया के साथ लोग जोड़े जाते रहे हैं, और प्रभु के दूसरे आगमन तथा कलीसिया के उठाए जाने तक लोगों को कलीसिया में लोगों के जोड़े जाने के लिए उसी प्रक्रिया का ठीक वैसे ही निर्वाह होता रहेगा।

हमने प्रेरितों 2 अध्याय से देखा है कि कोई अपने आप से प्रभु की कलीसिया में नहीं जुड़ सकता है, वरन प्रभु ही अपने लोगों को अपनी कलीसिया में जोड़ता है (प्रेरितों 2:47)। प्रभु की कलीसिया में जोड़े जाने में न तो जोड़े जाने में, न तो लोगों की भक्ति की, न उनके द्वारा उनके धर्म के निर्वाह की, और न ही उन लोगों के परिवार या वंशावली की कलीसिया के साथ कोई भूमिका है (1 कुरिन्थियों 1:26-28)। इस प्रक्रिया में दो प्रकार के लोग सम्मिलित हैं - पहले प्रभु यीशु मसीह में पापों की क्षमा और उद्धार के सुसमाचार को लोगों तक पहुँचाने वाले, जन सामान्य को प्रभु के इस सुसमाचार के बारे में बताने वाले; और दूसरे वे लोग जो इस सुसमाचार को सुनकर, इसके प्रति स्वीकृति की, सकारात्मक प्रतिक्रिया देते हैं। जो सच्चे मन से यह सकारात्मक प्रतिक्रिया देते हैं, प्रभु की कलीसिया में जुड़ते हैं, उनके जीवनों में होने वाली सात बातें प्रेरितों 2:38-42 में लिखी गई हैं। इस प्रक्रिया का आरंभ पवित्र आत्मा की सामर्थ्य से दिए गए सुसमाचार द्वारा लोगों के मनों को “छेदने”, या उन्हें उनके पापों के प्रति कायल करने और फिर उन कायल होने वालों में उनके पापों के समाधान की आवश्यकता के बोध के साथ होता है (2:37)। जो पवित्र आत्मा द्वारा सुसमाचार से पापों के लिए कायल किए जाते हैं, और पापों के समाधान के लिए कोई अपना अथवा किसी प्रकार का मानवीय या संस्थागत समाधान ढूँढने के स्थान पर परमेश्वर के समाधान के खोजी होते हैं, और उस समाधान को स्वीकार करते हैं, उसका पालन करते हैं, प्रभु की कलीसिया में उनके जुड़ने का कार्य पश्चाताप के साथ आरंभ होता है (2:38)।

आज हम प्रभु की कलीसिया में जुड़ने के लिए अनिवार्य पहले कदम, इस अति-महत्वपूर्ण शब्द “पश्चाताप” या “मन-फिराओ” को और उसके अभिप्राय को समझने का प्रयास करते हैं। मूल यूनानी भाषा के जिस शब्द का अनुवाद “पश्चाताप” या “मन-फिराओ” किया गया है, उसका शब्दार्थ होता है अपने पहले वालों से बिलकुल भिन्न, उससे उलट सोच-विचार, मान्यताएं, और धारणाएं अपना लेना। अर्थात, जिस बात के लिए पश्चाताप किया जाए, या जिसके विषय मन फिराया जाए, वह वास्तविक तब ही होगा जब व्यक्ति उन बातों के विषय अपना सोच-विचार-व्यवहार पूर्णतः बदल कर भिन्न कर ले, ऐसा कर ले जो पहले वाले के विपरीत हो। इसीलिए परमेश्वर पवित्र आत्मा ने मसीही विश्वास में आने वाले व्यक्ति के लिए लिखवाया है, सो यदि कोई मसीह में है तो वह नई सृष्‍टि है: पुरानी बातें बीत गई हैं; देखो, वे सब नई हो गईं (2 कुरिन्थियों 5:17)। प्रकट है, बाइबल की परिभाषा के अनुसार किया गया “पश्चाताप” या “मन-फिराव” एक औपचारिकता, मुँह से कुछ शब्दों का दोहरा देना, और फिर वापस उसी पहले वाली सोच-विचार-व्यवहार की स्थिति में लौट जाना नहीं है। यदि व्यक्ति द्वारा किया गया यह “पश्चाताप” या “मन-फिराव” वास्तविक होगा, तो उस व्यक्ति में दिखने वाली दो बातों के द्वारा प्रकट एवं प्रमाणित हो जाएगा:

1. रोमियों 12:2 - और इस संसार के सदृश न बनो; परन्तु तुम्हारी बुद्धि के नये हो जाने से तुम्हारा चाल-चलन भी बदलता जाए, जिस से तुम परमेश्वर की भली, और भावती, और सिद्ध इच्छा अनुभव से मालूम करते रहो। सच्चा “पश्चाताप” या “मन-फिराव” करने के बाद, फिर उस व्यक्ति में संसार के सदृश्य रहने, सोचने, व्यवहार करने आदि बातों के निर्वाह की प्रवृत्ति नहीं रहेगी। उसका चाल-चलन बदल जाएगा, और निरंतर बदलता चला जाएगा। अब वह हर बात में परमेश्वर की इच्छा जानने और मानने वाला हो जाएगा, और इसी पथ पर अग्रसर बना रहेगा। यह एक आजीवन चलती रहने वाली प्रक्रिया है - परमेश्वर पवित्र आत्मा व्यक्ति को उसके पापों के विषय कायल करता रहता है, और व्यक्ति विनम्र एवं आज्ञाकारी होकर पापों के लिए पश्चाताप के साथ अपने मसीही जीवन एवं चाल-चलन को सुधारता रहता है। इस प्रक्रिया का प्रभाव होता है कि व्यक्ति अंश-अंश करके प्रभु यीशु मसीह के स्वरूप में ढलता चला जाता है (2 कुरिन्थियों 3:18; रोमियों 8:29)। सच्चे पश्चाताप का यह प्रथम प्रत्यक्ष एवं सर्व-विदित प्रभाव है, जिसके लिए किसी को दावा करने की आवश्यकता ही नहीं है; उसका बदला हुआ जीवन स्वयं ही उसके अंदर आए परिवर्तन को बताता है। 

2. कुरिन्थियों 7:10 - क्योंकि परमेश्वर-भक्ति का शोक ऐसा पश्चाताप उत्पन्न करता है जिस का परिणाम उद्धार है और फिर उस से पछताना नहीं पड़ता: परन्तु संसारी शोक मृत्यु उत्पन्न करता है। वास्तविक पश्चाताप या मन-फिराव, व्यक्ति के मन में परमेश्वर के सम्मुख उसके पापमय व्यवहार के लिए एक गहरा और गंभीर शोक भी उत्पन्न करता है। यह केवल दिखावे का या औपचारिकता का शोक नहीं है, इस शोक में परमेश्वर भक्ति भी सम्मिलित रहती है। अर्थात, सच्चा पश्चाताप व्यक्ति को संसार के लगाव से निकालकर संसार के प्रति अलगाव और परमेश्वर के प्रति लगाव की ओर ले जाता है। यह एक बड़ी स्वाभाविक बात है कि जिसने संसार और सांसारिकता की बातों के लिए सच्चा पश्चाताप किया है, अर्थात उस सोच-विचार-व्यवहार को वास्तव में छोड़ दिया है, उससे पलट गया है, वह उसी सोच-विचार-व्यवहार में लिप्त कैसे रहेगा? अगर वह अभी भी लिप्त है, तो उसने उस सोच-विचार-व्यवहार के लिए वास्तविक पश्चाताप किया ही नहीं है। यही वह बनावटी या सांसारिक शोक है जिसके लिए इस पद में लिखा है कि वह मृत्यु उत्पन्न करता है; क्योंकि व्यक्ति शब्दों की औपचारिकता के निर्वाह के द्वारा यही सोचता रहता है कि उसने “वैधानिक”, या परंपरागत आवश्यकता को पूरा कर लिया है, और अब उसकी दशा ठीक और स्वीकार्य है, जबकि ऐसा होता नहीं है। अन्ततः जब तक उसे अपने उस औपचारिक पश्चाताप की वास्तविकता एवं व्यर्थता समझ में आती है, तब तक बहुत देर हो चुकी होती है, और व्यक्ति अनन्त विनाश में चला जाता है।

प्रभु यीशु की कलीसिया के साथ जुड़ना सच्चे पश्चाताप के साथ आरंभ होता है, जिसका प्रत्यक्ष प्रमाण पश्चाताप करने वाले उस व्यक्ति के जीवन में आया पूर्ण परिवर्तन, पश्चातापी जीवन, तथा अंश-अंश करके प्रभु यीशु के स्वरूप में ढलते चले जाना और पापमय जीवन एवं व्यवहार के लिए शोक में तथा ईश्वरीय भक्ति में बढ़ते चले जाना होता है।

यदि आप एक मसीही विश्वासी हैं, तो प्रभु यीशु की कलीसिया में अपने सम्मिलित होने को भली-भांति सुनिश्चित कर लीजिए। अपने जीवन को जाँच-परख कर देख लीजिए कि आप में उपरोक्त सच्चे पश्चाताप या मन-फिराव के गुण और प्रमाण विद्यमान हैं कि नहीं? यदि लेशमात्र भी संदेह हो, तो अभी समय और अवसर रहते स्थिति को ठीक कर लीजिए। कहीं थोड़ी सी लापरवाही, बात को गंभीरता से न लेना, अनन्तकाल की पीड़ा न बन जाए।

यदि आपने अभी तक प्रभु की शिष्यता को स्वीकार नहीं किया है, तो अपने अनन्त जीवन और स्वर्गीय आशीषों को सुनिश्चित करने के लिए अभी उसके पक्ष में अपना निर्णय कर लीजिए। जहाँ प्रभु की आज्ञाकारिता है, उसके वचन की बातों का आदर और पालन है, वहाँ प्रभु की आशीष और सुरक्षा भी है। यदि आपने अभी तक नया जन्म, उद्धार नहीं पाया है, प्रभु यीशु से अपने पापों के लिए क्षमा नहीं माँगी है, तो अभी आपके पास समय और अवसर है कि यह कर लें। प्रभु यीशु से अपने पापों के लिए क्षमा माँगकर, स्वेच्छा से तथा सच्चे मन से अपने आप को उसकी अधीनता में समर्पित कर दीजिए - उद्धार और स्वर्गीय जीवन का यही एकमात्र मार्ग है। आपको स्वेच्छा और सच्चे मन से प्रभु यीशु मसीह से केवल एक छोटी प्रार्थना करनी है, और साथ ही अपना जीवन उसे पूर्णतः समर्पित करना है। आप यह प्रार्थना और समर्पण कुछ इस प्रकार से भी कर सकते हैं, “प्रभु यीशु मैं आपका धन्यवाद करता हूँ कि आपने मेरे पापों की क्षमा और समाधान के लिए उन पापों को अपने ऊपर लिया, उनके कारण मेरे स्थान पर क्रूस की मृत्यु सही, गाड़े गए, और मेरे उद्धार के लिए आप तीसरे दिन जी भी उठे, और आज जीवित प्रभु परमेश्वर हैं। कृपया मेरे पापों को क्षमा करें, मुझे अपनी शरण में लें, और मुझे अपना शिष्य बना लें। मैं अपना जीवन आप के हाथों में समर्पित करता हूँ।” परमेश्वर आपके साथ संगति रखने की बहुत लालसा रखता है तथा आपको आशीषित देखना चाहता है, लेकिन इसे सम्भव करना आपका व्यक्तिगत निर्णय है। सच्चे और समर्पित मन से की गई आपकी एक प्रार्थना आपके वर्तमान तथा भविष्य को, इस लोक के और परलोक के जीवन को, अनन्तकाल के लिए स्वर्गीय एवं आशीषित बना देगी। क्या आप अभी समय और अवसर होते हुए, इस प्रार्थना को नहीं करेंगे? निर्णय आपका है।

Understanding Repentance

We have seen in the previous articles that the only way to be partakers of God’s eternal blessings and heavenly fellowship is by becoming a part of the Church of the Lord Jesus Christ, i.e., a member of the Lord’s Church. The way to becoming a member of the Lord’s Church is not something mysterious, or a secret, that has been revealed to only a chosen or select few, nor is it something that has not been made evident to everyone; rather the invitation is for everyone and the way has been opened for all to enter. Nor is it something that any group, sect, or denomination decides by itself, for its members. Just as the Lord God is very definitive, clear, and straightforward about everything pertaining to His Church, He alone determines them all, and does not accept any interference or alteration in what He has decided and stated, similarly, the Lord God has determined and given the way to join His church, become its member. He has made this way apparent in His Word for everyone. This process is given in the description of the events leading to the establishing of His first Church, in Acts 2. In the manner the first Church was established at that time, and God’s people were added to it; similarly, since then till now, in all places of the world, at all times, people have been added to the Church of the Lord through the same process; and this very process will continue just the same till the second coming of the Lord.

We have seen from Acts chapter 2 that no one can ever join himself to the Lord’s Church; rather it is the Lord who joins people to His Church (Acts 2:47). In this joining of the people to His Church by the Lord, neither their reverence, nor their fulfilling of religious rituals and ceremonies, nor their family affiliation and genealogy has any role (1 Corinthians 1:26-28). There are two kinds of people involved in this process - the first are those who take the good news of forgiveness of sins and salvation to the people; inform the general public about the gospel; and second are those who listen to this gospel, give a positive response and accept it. Those who accept and give a positive response honestly and with a sincere commitment, are joined to the Church, in their lives seven things are seen which are written in Acts 2:38-42. As we see from Acts 2:38, having listened to the gospel message given under the power of the Holy Spirit, by committed disciples of the Lord Jesus, the first step is being “cut to the heart”. In other words, the people are convicted of their sins, and seek a remedy for their being in a state of sin (Acts 2:37). Those who are actually convicted by the Holy Spirit for their sins and sincerely seek its remedy, they do not turn to any persons, groups, sects, or denominations for this remedy, but turn directly to God to show them the remedy, accept what God shows and tells them, and obey it. So, the first step to joining the Church of the Lord Jesus Christ is an actual conviction of sins, and a true heartfelt repentance for them (Acts 2:38).

Let us try and understand this very important term “repentance” which is the first step to being a part of the Lord’s Church. The word used in the Greek language, and translated as “repentance”, literally means to come to accept a totally different, and diametrically opposite understanding than the one before, to have concepts and notions that are the reverse of those held earlier. Therefore, for a person to repent about something will only be factual and meaningful if a person develops and starts following a path totally different and reverse of what he was following earlier in his thoughts, mind, and behavior. That is why the Holy Spirit had it written about Christian Believers, Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new (2 Corinthians 5:17). This makes it very clear that Biblically speaking, the actual “repentance” is not something done to fulfill a formality, nor is it ritually reciting a few words, and then reverting back to the same earlier state. If this repentance of a person is factual, then it will be proven by two things evident in that person’s life:

1. Romans 12:2 - And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God. After true repentance, that person will no longer have a tendency to think, act, and behave like people of the world. His life-style will change, and will continue to change. Now he will start making efforts to find out and fulfill God’s will about everything, and will remain committed to this. This is a life-long process - the Holy Spirit keeps convicting the person for his sins, and the person in humble submission continues to obey and improve his life and behavior. The effect of this process is that the person keeps on getting transformed into the likeness of the Lord Jesus, bit by bit (2 Corinthians 3:18; Romans 8:29). This is the first evident proof of true repentance; a proof that speaks for itself, no one needs to make any claims about it. The changed outer life of the person speaks for the transformation happening within.

2. - 2 Corinthians 7:10 For godly sorrow produces repentance leading to salvation, not to be regretted; but the sorrow of the world produces death. True repentance creates a deep sense of remorse and heartfelt sorrow in that person for the sins he has committed in the eyes of God. This is not just a formality, nor a pretense; there is a sincere Godly reverence involved in true repentance. In other words, a person who has truly repented, will change from being attached to the world, to being attached to the Lord God and living not for the world but for his savior Lord. This is a very natural and obvious thing; it is not at all difficult to understand that he who has truly repented from the worldly things and way of life, and has discarded it, how can he remain attached and involved in them in his thoughts, mind and behavior? If the person is still involved in worldly ways, then he has not truly repented from them. This is that “sorrow of the world” that is written in this world; an external, ‘make-believe’ sorrow, a pretense, that produces death. Because that person, having fulfilled certain formalities and spoken some specific words, keeps thinking and believing that he has ritually and legally repented, therefore, he is now good enough and acceptable to God. Whereas in reality, that is not the case; he is actually still in his sins and the punishment of unforgiven sins, i.e., eternal death, is still upon him. By the time he realizes his real condition, it is too late to do anything about it.

Joining the Church of the Lord Jesus begins with true repentance; which is evidenced by the radical change that comes about in the person’s life, his penitent life-style, and his being gradually and progressively getting transformed into the likeness of the Lord Jesus.

If you are a Christian Believer, then examine yourself and be sure that you indeed are a part of the Church of the Lord Jesus. Evaluate your life to ascertain that the signs of true repentance are evident in your life or not. If you are in the slightest doubt, do not take it lightly or ignore it, but take proper remedial action while you have the time and opportunity from God available to you. A seemingly small carelessness and procrastination can have eternally disastrous results.
