पतरस पर?
ईसाई या मसीही समाज में एक बहुत आम धारणा पाई जाती है कि प्रभु यीशु ने पतरस पर अपने कलीसिया बनाने की बात कही है; और इस धारणा का आधार मत्ती 16:18 में प्रभु द्वारा कही गई बात - “और मैं भी तुझ से कहता हूं, कि तू पतरस है; और मैं इस पत्थर पर अपनी कलीसिया बनाऊंगा: और अधोलोक के फाटक उस पर प्रबल न होंगे” को बनाया जाता है। किन्तु यह धारणा सही नहीं है, वचन के अनुसार नहीं है।
बाइबल की बातों को गलत समझने का सबसे बड़ा कारण है किसी एक शब्द, या वाक्यांश, या वाक्य, अथवा पद को उसके संदर्भ के बाहर लेकर उसकी ऐसी व्याख्या करना, जो संदर्भ के अनुसार देखे जाने में सही नहीं निकलती है। इसलिए बाइबल की हर बात को न केवल उसके तात्कालिक संदर्भ में देखना और समझना आवश्यक है, किन्तु बाइबल में शेष स्थानों पर उस विषय से संबंधित भागों में और क्या कहा गया है, उसे भी देखना और उन बातों के साथ अपनी व्याख्या के सामंजस्य को जाँचना भी अनिवार्य है। साथ ही, हमेशा यह ध्यान भी रखना चाहिए कि बाइबल की पुस्तकें उनके मूल स्वरूप में कभी भी अध्यायों और पदों में नहीं लिखी गई थीं वरन सामान्य लेख, कविताओं, और पत्रों के समान ही लिखी गई थीं। वर्तमान में पाया जाने वाला यह अध्यायों और पदों में विभाजन बहुत बाद में, हवाले देने और स्मरण रखने में सहायता करने के लिए किया गया। इसलिए यह विभाजन कृत्रिम है, और कई बार किसी परिच्छेद या खंड या वाक्य के विचार को पूरा हुए बिना ही बीच में काट या रोक देता है। इसलिए सही व्याख्या के लिए, संदर्भ में देखते समय, हमेशा, अपने मन में इस पदों और अध्यायों के विभाजन को हटाकर, उस संबंधित लेख को एक पूर्ण बात या विचार के अनुसार देखना, समझना, और फिर समझाना चाहिए। यदि हमारी व्याख्या तात्कालिक संदर्भ तथा उस विषय पर बाइबल के अन्य बातों के साथ मेल नहीं खाती है, तो व्याख्या गलत है, और उसे सुधारे जाने की आवश्यकता है।
संपूर्ण बाइबल परमेश्वर का वचन है; संपूर्ण बाइबल परमेश्वर पवित्र आत्मा की प्रेरणा द्वारा लिखवाया गया है, अर्थात मूल और वास्तविक लेखक पवित्र आत्मा ही है, चाहे कलम चलाने वाले मनुष्य भिन्न हों; और यही वचन आदि में था, परमेश्वर के साथ था, परमेश्वर था, और देहधारी होकर हमारे मध्य में डेरा किया (यूहन्ना 1:1-2, 14)। इसलिए संपूर्ण बाइबल की बातों में कोई त्रुटि या परस्पर विरोधाभास संभव ही नहीं है, अन्यथा परमेश्वर में त्रुटि है, विरोधाभास है। इसलिए हर ऐसी व्याख्या जो तात्कालिक संदर्भ तथा संबंधित बातों एवं शिक्षाओं के साथ संगत नहीं है, वह गलत है, स्वीकार्य नहीं है; उसे मान और लेकर नहीं चला जा सकता है। यही बात इस धारणा को जाँचने की कसौटी भी है कि क्या वास्तव में प्रभु ने अपनी कलीसिया पतरस पर बनाने के लिए कहा है? और जाँचे जाने पर यह प्रकट हो जाता है कि प्रभु ने ऐसी कोई बात नहीं कही, ऐसा कोई आश्वासन नहीं दिया; और यह धारणा बिलकुल गलत, अनुचित और पूर्णतः अस्वीकार्य है।
हम इस धारणा का विश्लेषण तीन बातों के अंतर्गत करेंगे:
क्या मत्ती 16:18 में प्रभु की कलीसिया बनाने की बात पतरस के लिए थी?
क्या वचन में किसी अन्य स्थान पर पतरस पर कलीसिया बनाने की, उसे कलीसिया का आधार रखने की पुष्टि है?
क्या पतरस इस आदर और आधार के योग्य था?
आज हम इन तीन में से पहली बात को देखेंगे। इस पद और इसमें प्रभु द्वारा कही गई बात को लेकर पतरस और कलीसिया के बारे में इस बड़े असमंजस और गलत धारणा का कारण इस पद की दो बातें हैं - (i) प्रभु द्वारा कहे गए ‘इस पत्थर’ को पतरस के लिए किया गया संबोधन मान लेना; और (ii) यूनानी भाषा में ‘पतरस’ शब्द के शब्दार्थ का ‘पत्थर’ अर्थ होना। मत्ती 16:18 का संदर्भ उससे पहले के पदों में कही गई प्रभु की बातों के द्वारा है। यह संदर्भ प्रभु द्वारा कहे गए ‘इस’ शब्द को परिभाषित करता है, और शब्द ‘पत्थर’ के वास्तविक अर्थ को प्रकट करता है। इसलिए इस पद को मत्ती 16:13 से आरंभ कर के देखना चाहिए। मत्ती 16:13-14 में प्रभु ने शिष्यों से पूछा कि लोग उसके विषय में क्या कहते हैं, और पद 15 में शिष्यों ने प्रभु के विषय लोगों के दृष्टिकोण को उसे बता दिया। फिर पद 15 में प्रभु शिष्यों से उसके लिए उन शिष्यों के दृष्टिकोण को पूछता है। इसके लिए “शमौन पतरस ने उत्तर दिया, कि तू जीवते परमेश्वर का पुत्र मसीह है” (मत्ती 16:16); और पद 17 में इस उत्तर एवं दृष्टिकोण के लिए प्रभु पतरस की सराहना करता है, और उससे कहता है “...क्योंकि मांस और लहू ने नहीं, परन्तु मेरे पिता ने जो स्वर्ग में है, यह बात तुझ पर प्रगट की है”। ध्यान कीजिए कि प्रभु पतरस से कह रहा है कि “मेरे पिता ने जो स्वर्ग में है, यह बात तुझ पर प्रगट की है”; स्पष्ट है कि यहाँ पर “यह बात” से अभिप्राय है वह दर्शन जो पिता परमेश्वर ने, पतरस को, परमेश्वर पुत्र, अर्थात प्रभु यीशु मसीह के बारे में प्रदान किया है। अब यदि पदों के मध्य के इस कृत्रिम विभाजन को हटा कर, पद 17-19 को एक निरंतर विचार के रूप में देखें, जैसा वह मूल भाषा में लिखा गया था, तो यह समझने में कोई असमंजस नहीं होता है कि पद 18 का “इस”, पद 17 के “यह बात” से संबंधित है। अर्थात पद 18 का “इस” पद 17 में परमेश्वर पिता द्वारा पतरस को दिए गए दर्शन या भेद के प्रकटीकरण के विषय है। इस पर भी ध्यान दीजिए कि यदि प्रभु ने पद 18 में “इस” का प्रयोग पतरस के लिए किया होता, यह दिखाने के लिये कि वह पतरस पर अपनी कलीसिया बनाएगा, तो अधिक उचित तथा प्रयुक्त शब्द होते “तुझ पर”, न कि “इस पत्थर पर”।
अब यहाँ पर असमंजस उत्पन्न करने वाली दूसरी बात को समझते हैं। मूल यूनानी भाषा में, इस वाक्य में, प्रभु द्वारा शब्दों का आलंकारिक प्रयोग किया गया है। ध्यान कीजिए, प्रभु के साथ पतरस की पहली भेंट में प्रभु ने उस से कहा था “...तू यूहन्ना का पुत्र शमौन है, तू कैफा, अर्थात पतरस कहलाएगा” (यूहन्ना 1:42); यहाँ प्रयुक्त शब्द “कैफा, Cephas” सिरियक भाषा का शब्द है, जिसका यूनानी अनुवाद पेत्रोस है, जिससे पतरस शब्द आया है, और जैसा इस पद में लिखा गया है, सिरियक “कैफा, Cephas” तथा यूनानी “पेत्रोस”, दोनों ही शब्दों का अर्थ ‘पत्थर’ या ‘कंकर’, अर्थात एक छोटा पत्थर होता है। मत्ती 16:18 के आरंभिक वाक्य में भी प्रभु इसी बात को उसे स्मरण करवा रहा है कि तू “पेत्रोस”, अर्थात “कैफा, Cephas” यानी कि एक छोटा पत्थर या कंकर है। किन्तु मत्ती 16:18 में, अगले वाक्य में, “इस पत्थर” में प्रभु ने “पेत्रोस” शब्द का नहीं, वरन “पेत्रा” शब्द का प्रयोग किया, जिसका अर्थ होता है “चट्टान”। इन दोनों शब्दों को अपने-अपने स्थानों पर रखने से मत्ती 16:18 इस प्रकार पढ़ा जाएगा: “और मैं भी तुझ से कहता हूं, कि तू पतरस [पेत्रोस - कंकर, या छोटा पत्थर] है; और मैं इस पत्थर [पेत्रा - चट्टान, जो विशाल दृढ़, अटल होती है] पर अपनी कलीसिया बनाऊंगा: और अधोलोक के फाटक उस पर प्रबल न होंगे।”
अब, इन सभी बातों को ध्यान में रखते हुए, हम प्रभु द्वारा शब्दों के आलंकारिक प्रयोग, और इस वाक्य के वास्तविक अर्थ को समझ सकते हैं, जिसकी पुष्टि फिर वचन की अन्य संबंधित बातों से, तथा पतरस के बारे में विश्लेषण से - हमारे उपरोक्त दूसरे और तीसरे प्रश्नों के उत्तरों से भी हो जाती है। इन स्पष्टीकरणों के समावेश के साथ, प्रभु की कही बात का अभिप्राय कुछ इस प्रकार का होता - “तू एक कंकर/छोटा पत्थर है। और मैं इस चट्टान पर, अर्थात पिता परमेश्वर द्वारा तुझ पर प्रकट किए गए इस अटल, दृढ़, अडिग, सत्य पर कि मैं जीवते परमेश्वर का पुत्र यीशु हूँ, अपनी कलीसिया बनाऊँगा: और अधोलोक के फाटक उस पर प्रबल न होंगे।” प्रभु की यह बात वचन की अन्य बातों के साथ भी संगत है, तथा पतरस के जीवन का विश्लेषण भी यही दिखाता है कि वह प्रभु की कलीसिया का आधार कभी नहीं हो सकता था, कलीसिया उस पर नहीं बनाई जा सकती थी; और ऐसा करना वचन में त्रुटि एवं विरोधाभास ले आता है।
यदि आप एक मसीही विश्वासी हैं, तो परमेश्वर पवित्र आत्मा की आज्ञाकारिता एवं अधीनता में वचन की सच्चाइयों को उससे समझें; किसी के भी द्वारा कही गई कोई भी बात को तुरंत ही पूर्ण सत्य के रूप में स्वीकार न करें, विशेषकर तब, जब वह बात बाइबल की अन्य बातों के साथ ठीक मेल नहीं रखती हो।
यदि आपने प्रभु की शिष्यता को अभी तक स्वीकार नहीं किया है, तो अपने अनन्त जीवन और स्वर्गीय आशीषों को सुनिश्चित करने के लिए अभी प्रभु यीशु के पक्ष में अपना निर्णय कर लीजिए। जहाँ प्रभु की आज्ञाकारिता है, उसके वचन की बातों का आदर और पालन है, वहाँ प्रभु की आशीष और सुरक्षा भी है। प्रभु यीशु से अपने पापों के लिए क्षमा माँगकर, स्वेच्छा से तथा सच्चे मन से अपने आप को उसकी अधीनता में समर्पित कर दीजिए - उद्धार और स्वर्गीय जीवन का यही एकमात्र मार्ग है। आपको स्वेच्छा और सच्चे मन से प्रभु यीशु मसीह से केवल एक छोटी प्रार्थना करनी है, और साथ ही अपना जीवन उसे पूर्णतः समर्पित करना है। आप यह प्रार्थना और समर्पण कुछ इस प्रकार से भी कर सकते हैं, “प्रभु यीशु मैं आपका धन्यवाद करता हूँ कि आपने मेरे पापों की क्षमा और समाधान के लिए उन पापों को अपने ऊपर लिया, उनके कारण मेरे स्थान पर क्रूस की मृत्यु सही, गाड़े गए, और मेरे उद्धार के लिए आप तीसरे दिन जी भी उठे, और आज जीवित प्रभु परमेश्वर हैं। कृपया मेरे पापों को क्षमा करें, मुझे अपनी शरण में लें, और मुझे अपना शिष्य बना लें। मैं अपना जीवन आप के हाथों में समर्पित करता हूँ।” सच्चे और समर्पित मन से की गई आपकी एक प्रार्थना आपके वर्तमान तथा भविष्य को, इस लोक के और परलोक के जीवन को, अनन्तकाल के लिए स्वर्गीय एवं आशीषित बना देगी।

Built on Peter?
There is a very common misunderstanding amongst the Christians, that the Lord Jesus has said that He will build His Church on Peter. The basis for this misunderstanding is Matthew 16:18, “And I also say to you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build My church, and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it.” This is because of misinterpreting this verse.
The most common reason for misinterpreting and misunderstanding something from the Bible is taking some word, or phrase, or sentence, or passage of the Bible out of its context and giving it meanings that do not stand up to scrutiny when that word, or phrase, or sentence, or passage of the Bible is seen in its actual context. Therefore, to properly understand Biblical things, not only should they be taken and understood in their immediate context, but also by considering what has been said in the Bible at other places about the same thing; every interpretation should satisfy, be consistent with everything said in the Bible about it; there should be no contradictions - none whatsoever, in the immediate and the related portions. Another fact that should always be borne in mind while interpreting and understanding is that in their original form and writing, the books of the Bible were not written in chapters and verses, as we presently have them in our Bibles. They were written as just another text, poetry, letter in general use is written. This current division into chapters and verses came about much later, as an aid, to cite, quote, and memorize Scripture portions. Therefore, this division is artificial, and at many places it cuts off the running thought of a sentence or passage in between, before its completion. Hence, for a correct interpretation, while looking at the context, it is always helpful to mentally remove the divisions in to verses and chapters, and consider the whole thought as one unit. If our interpretation and understanding is not consistent with either the immediate context, or with other related passages and portions, then that interpretation and understanding is wrong, and needs to be rectified.
The whole of the Bible is the Word of God; the whole Bible has been written under the guidance of God the Holy Spirit, i.e., the original and actual author is the Holy Spirit, even though the persons using the pen for writing the words may be different. It is this Word that was present at the beginning, was with God, was God, and became flesh to dwell amongst us (John 1:1-2, 14). So, there can never be any error or mutual contradiction in the things of the Bible, else it implies imperfections and contradictions in God Himself. Therefore, every explanation and interpretation that is not consistent with the immediate context and the related things in the Bible is false, unacceptable, cannot be agreed to and used in any manner. These facts also serve as a guide for us to examine this notion that did the Lord Jesus really say that He will build His Church on Peter? We will see how on proper examination and with a correct understanding, it becomes clear that the Lord Jesus never said anything like this, nor did He give any such assurance; this is a completely wrong notion, is totally unjustified, and absolutely unacceptable.
We will examine this notion about the Church being built on Peter through three questions:
Was the Lord’s statement in Matthew 16:18 about building His Church, about Peter?
Does the Scripture at any other place support or state this notion of the Church being built on Peter, or Peter being its foundation?
Was Peter even worthy of this honor, of being considered to be the foundation for the Church?
Today we will look at the first of the above three questions. Two things in this verse are the main cause of the confusion and misunderstanding about the Church being built on Peter - (i) The assumption that the Lord’s use the words “on this rock” for Peter; and (ii) The meaning of “Peter”. Before taking up these two questions, let us first consider the context of this verse and its implications regarding interpretation. The immediate context of Matthew 16:18 are its preceding verses. These verses define the word ‘this’ used here by the Lord, and clarify the actual meaning of the word ‘Peter.’ Therefore, this verse should be studied along with its preceding verses, i.e., from Matthew 16:13 onwards. In Matthew 16:13-14 the Lord Jesus is asking His disciples, what do the people say about Him; and in verse 15, the disciples tell Him what the people think. Then, in verse 15, the Lord asks the disciples what do they think about Him. For this, “Simon Peter answered and said, "You are the Christ, the Son of the living God."” (Matthew 16:16); and the Lord in verse 17 appreciating Peter’s answer and commends him for it, and says to him “...for flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but My Father who is in heaven”. Take note that the Lord says to him “revealed this to you”; clearly the “this” here is meant for the revelation given to Peter by God the Father about God the Son, Lord Jesus. Now if you mentally remove the artificial division into verses, and consider the passage from verse 17-19 as one continual thought, as it had been written in the original text, then there is no confusion in understanding that the “this” of verse 18 is related and about the same thing as the “this” of verse 17; i.e., the “this” of verse 18 is not about Peter but about the revelation given by God the Father to Peter. Also take note that if in verse 18 the Lord Jesus had wanted to say that He will build His Church on Peter, then instead of the word “this” for Peter, the more appropriate word which He would have used would have been “on you”, and not “on this rock.”
Now let us look at the second thing that causes the confusion and misunderstanding about this verse. In the original Greek language, the Lord has used allegorical or metaphorical words in this conversation. Recall that in His first meeting with Peter, the Lord has said to him, “...You are Simon the son of Jonah. You shall be called Cephas (which is translated, A Stone)” (John 1:42); the word cephas used here is a word of the Syriac language, and its Greek translation is ‘petros’, from which the name Peter has been derived. Both these words, Syriac cephas and Greek Petros mean the same thing - a small stone or pebble. In Mathew 16:18, in the opening sentence of verse the Lord is reminding Peter the same thing, that he is ‘petros’ i.e., ‘cephas’. But in the next sentence of verse 18 the Lord does not use the word ‘petros’, but says ‘petra’ which means a big rock. By putting the translations of these words in the place where they have been used, Matthew 16:18 can be paraphrased as: “And I also say to you that you are Peter [petros - a small stone or pebble], and on this rock [petra - rock, that which is large, firm, and unmovable] I will build My church, and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it.”
Now, by putting together all these things, and the figures of speech used by the Lord, we can understand the correct meaning of this verse. This meaning can then be affirmed by checking if it is consistent with the other related things given in the Bible, and by analyzing Peter’s ministry – the second and third questions given above. By taking all of these things together, what the Lord has said in this verse, can be stated like this: “you are a small stone/a pebble. I will build My Church on this firmly established and unmovable, rock-solid truth, i.e., what God the Father has revealed to you, that I am Jesus the Son of the Living God; and the gates of Hades will not be able to prevail upon that Church.” This statement of the Lord is consistent with the other things mentioned in the Scriptures; an examination of the life of Peter too reveals that he could never be the foundation of the Church of the Lord Jesus; the Church could never have been built on him; and to assume anything like this is to bring errors and contradictions in God’s Word.
If you are a Christian Believer, then you should learn to discern and understand the truths of God’s Word under the guidance and teaching of the Holy Spirit. Do not accept anything and everything as the truth unless and until you have cross-checked and verified it from the Bible with the help of the Holy Spirit; more so when that thing does not seem to be consistent with the other related things of the Bible.
If you have not yet accepted the discipleship of the Lord Jesus, then to ensure your eternal life and heavenly rewards, take a decision in favor of the Lord Jesus now. Wherever there is surrender and obedience towards the Lord Jesus, the Lord’s blessings and safety are also there. If you are still not Born Again, have not obtained salvation, or have not asked the Lord Jesus for forgiveness for your sins, then you have the opportunity to do so right now. A short prayer said voluntarily with a sincere heart, with heartfelt repentance for your sins, and a fully submissive attitude, “Lord Jesus, I confess that I have disobeyed You, and have knowingly or unknowingly, in mind, in thought, in attitude, and in deeds, committed sins. I believe that you have fully borne the punishment of my sins by your sacrifice on the cross, and have paid the full price of those sins for all eternity. Please forgive my sins, change my heart and mind towards you, and make me your disciple, take me with you." God longs for your company and wants to see you blessed, but to make this possible, is your personal decision. Will you not say this prayer now, while you have the time and opportunity to do so - the decision is yours.
