परमेश्वर द्वारा उसे दी गई बातों और विशेषाधिकारों का योग्य भण्डारी होने के लिए, प्रत्येक नया-जन्म पाए हुए मसीही विश्वासी को उन बातों और विशेषाधिकारों के बारे में सीखना है, जो परमेश्वर ने उसे मसीही जीवन जीने और ज़िम्मेदारियाँ निभाने के लिये, उद्धार के साथ-साथ दी हैं। इस संदर्भ में, वर्तमान में हम विश्वासी के परमेश्वर की कलीसिया का, तथा परमेश्वर की अन्य सन्तानों के साथ सहभागिता रखने का भण्डारी होने के बारे में सीख रहे हैं। कलीसिया के बारे में समझने के लिए हमने बाइबल में कलीसिया के लिए उपयोग किये गए सात रूपकों पर विचार किया है, और उन से शिक्षाएँ प्राप्त की हैं। इन सातों रूपकों में देखा जाने वाला एक सामान्य विचार और शिक्षा है कि प्रभु की कलीसिया, प्रभु से है, प्रभु के द्वारा है, और प्रभु के लिए है; और यह कभी भी किसी मनुष्य से, मनुष्य के द्वारा, या मनुष्य के लिए नहीं रही है। पिछले लेख से हमने प्रभु के द्वारा अपनी कलीसिया के बनाए जाने के बारे देखना आरंभ किया है। हमने मसीही या ईसाई समाज में देखी जाने वाली एक बहुत आम किन्तु गलत धारणा, कि प्रभु यीशु ने कहा है कि वह अपनी कलीसिया अपने शिष्य पतरस पर बनाएगा, पर विचार के साथ इसे आरम्भ किया है। इस विषय को बाइबल के आधार पर समझने के लिये, हमने पिछले लेख में बाइबल की व्याख्या करने के मूलभूत सिद्धान्तों का संक्षिप्त पुनःअवलोकन किया था, जिनका प्रयोग अपने इस अध्ययन के लिये करेंगे। साथ ही हम ने अपने सामने तीन प्रश्न भी रखे थे, जिनके आधार पर हम आज के तथा आने वाले लेखों में इस धारणा का विश्लेषण करेंगे।
आज हम इन तीन में से पहली प्रश्न को देखेंगे, जो मत्ती 16:18 पर प्रभु की कही बात पर आधारित है। इस पद, मत्ती 16:18, और इसमें प्रभु द्वारा कही गई बात को लेकर पतरस और कलीसिया के बारे में इस बड़े असमंजस और गलत धारणा का कारण इस पद की दो बातें हैं - (i) प्रभु द्वारा कहे गए ‘इस पत्थर’ को पतरस के लिए कहा गया मान लेना; और (ii) यूनानी भाषा में ‘पतरस’ शब्द के शब्दार्थ का ‘पत्थर’ अर्थ होना। मत्ती 16:18 का संदर्भ उस से पहले के पदों में कही गई प्रभु की बातें हैं। यह संदर्भ प्रभु द्वारा यहाँ कहे गए शब्द ‘इस’ को परिभाषित करता है, और शब्द ‘पत्थर’ के वास्तविक अर्थ को प्रकट करता है। इसलिए इस पद को इससे पहले के पदों के संदर्भ में, मत्ती 16:13 से आरंभ कर के देखना चाहिए।
मत्ती 16:13-14 में प्रभु ने शिष्यों से पूछा कि लोग उसके विषय में क्या कहते हैं, और पद 15 में शिष्यों ने प्रभु के विषय लोगों के दृष्टिकोण को उसे बता दिया। फिर पद 15 में प्रभु शिष्यों से उसके लिए उन शिष्यों के दृष्टिकोण को पूछता है। इसके लिए “शमौन पतरस ने उत्तर दिया, कि तू जीवते परमेश्वर का पुत्र मसीह है” (मत्ती 16:16); और पद 17 में इस उत्तर एवं दृष्टिकोण के लिए प्रभु पतरस की सराहना करता है, और उससे कहता है “...क्योंकि मांस और लहू ने नहीं, परन्तु मेरे पिता ने जो स्वर्ग में है, यह बात तुझ पर प्रगट की है”। ध्यान कीजिए, प्रभु के इस वाक्य के अंतिम भाग में वाक्यांश “यह बात” आया है, जो पिता परमेश्वर द्वारा, पतरस को, परमेश्वर के पुत्र प्रभु यीशु मसीह के बारे में दिए गए दर्शन के लिए है। अब यदि आप इस खण्ड में से, अपने मन में, पदों के कृत्रिम विभाजन को हटा दें, और 17-19 पद तक इस खण्ड को एक ही खण्ड देखें, जैसा वह मूल भाषा में लिखा भी गया था, तो फिर प्रकट हो जाता है कि पद 18 का “इस” और पद 17 का “यह बात” एक ही बात के बारे में हैं। और इसमें कोई असमंजस नहीं रह जाता है कि पद 18 का “इस” पतरस के लिए नहीं परंतु उस दर्शन के लिए है जो परमेश्वर पिता ने प्रभु यीशु के बारे में पतरस को दिया है। साथ ही ध्यान कीजिए कि यदि प्रभु ने पद 18 में यह पतरस के लिए कहा होता कि वह अपनी कलीसिया उस पर बनाएगा, तो प्रभु के कहने के लिए अधिक उचित शब्द होते “तुझ पर”, न कि “इस पत्थर पर”।
अब यहाँ पर असमंजस उत्पन्न करने वाली दूसरी बात को समझते हैं। मूल यूनानी भाषा में, इस वाक्य में, प्रभु द्वारा शब्दों का आलंकारिक प्रयोग किया गया है। ध्यान कीजिए, प्रभु के साथ पतरस की पहली भेंट में प्रभु ने उस से कहा था “...तू यूहन्ना का पुत्र शमौन है, तू कैफा, अर्थात पतरस कहलाएगा” (यूहन्ना 1:42)। यहाँ प्रयुक्त शब्द “कैफा, Cephas” सिरियक भाषा का शब्द है, जिसका यूनानी अनुवाद पेत्रोस है, जिससे पतरस शब्द आया है। और इस पद में लिखे गये सिरियक “कैफा, Cephas” तथा यूनानी “पेत्रोस”, दोनों ही शब्दों का अर्थ एक छोटा पत्थर या कंकर होता है। मत्ती 16:18 के आरंभिक वाक्य में भी प्रभु इसी बात को उसे स्मरण करवा रहा है कि तू “पेत्रोस”, अर्थात “कैफा, Cephas” है, छोटा पत्थर या कंकर मात्र है। किन्तु मत्ती 16:18 में, अगले वाक्य में, “इस पत्थर” में प्रभु ने “पेत्रोस” शब्द का नहीं, वरन “पेत्रा” शब्द का प्रयोग किया, जिसका अर्थ होता है “चट्टान”। इन दोनों मूल-भाषाई शब्दों को उनके अर्थों के साथ अपने-अपने स्थानों पर रखने से मत्ती 16:18 इस प्रकार पढ़ा जाएगा: “और मैं भी तुझ से कहता हूं, कि तू पतरस [पेत्रोस - कंकर, या छोटा पत्थर] है; और मैं इस पत्थर [पेत्रा - चट्टान, जो विशाल दृढ़, अटल होती है] पर अपनी कलीसिया बनाऊंगा: और अधोलोक के फाटक उस पर प्रबल न होंगे।”
अब, इन सभी बातों को ध्यान में रखते हुए, हम प्रभु द्वारा शब्दों के आलंकारिक प्रयोग, और इस वाक्य के वास्तविक अर्थ को समझ सकते हैं। जिसकी पुष्टि फिर वचन की अन्य संबंधित बातों से, तथा पतरस की सेवकाई के बारे में विश्लेषण से भी हो जाती है – जैसा कि हम पिछले लेख में कहे गए दूसरे और तीसरे प्रश्नों पर विचार करते समय देखेंगे। इन स्पष्टीकरणों के समावेश के साथ, प्रभु की कही बात का अभिप्राय कुछ इस प्रकार का होता - “तू एक कंकर/छोटा पत्थर है। और मैं इस चट्टान पर, अर्थात पिता परमेश्वर द्वारा तुझ पर प्रकट किए गए इस अटल, दृढ़, अडिग, सत्य पर कि मैं जीवते परमेश्वर का पुत्र यीशु हूँ, अपनी कलीसिया बनाऊँगा: और अधोलोक के फाटक उस कलीसिया पर प्रबल न होंगे जिसे मैं इस चट्टान पर बनाऊँगा।” जैसा कि हम अगले दोनों प्रश्नों पर विचार करते हुए आगे देखेंगे, प्रभु की यह बात वचन की अन्य बातों के साथ भी संगत है। साथ ही पतरस के जीवन का विश्लेषण भी यही दिखाता है कि वह प्रभु की कलीसिया का आधार कभी नहीं हो सकता था, कलीसिया उस पर नहीं बनाई जा सकती थी; और ऐसा करना वचन में त्रुटि एवं विरोधाभास ले आता है।
यदि आप एक मसीही विश्वासी हैं, तो परमेश्वर पवित्र आत्मा की आज्ञाकारिता एवं अधीनता में वचन की सच्चाइयों को उस ही से समझें। किसी के भी द्वारा कही गई किसी भी बात को तुरंत ही पूर्ण सत्य के रूप में स्वीकार न करें, विशेषकर तब, जब वह बात बाइबल की अन्य बातों के साथ ठीक मेल नहीं रखती हो।
यदि आपने प्रभु की शिष्यता को अभी तक स्वीकार नहीं किया है, तो अपने अनन्त जीवन और स्वर्गीय आशीषों को सुनिश्चित करने के लिए अभी प्रभु यीशु के पक्ष में अपना निर्णय कर लीजिए। जहाँ प्रभु की आज्ञाकारिता है, उसके वचन की बातों का आदर और पालन है, वहाँ प्रभु की आशीष और सुरक्षा भी है। स्वेच्छा से अपने पापों के लिये पश्चाताप करके, प्रभु यीशु से अपने पापों के लिए क्षमा माँगकर, स्वेच्छा से तथा सच्चे मन से अपने आप को उसकी अधीनता में समर्पित कर दीजिए - उद्धार और स्वर्गीय जीवन का यही एकमात्र मार्ग है। आपको स्वेच्छा और सच्चे मन से प्रभु यीशु मसीह से केवल एक छोटी प्रार्थना करनी है, और साथ ही अपना जीवन उसे पूर्णतः समर्पित करना है। आप यह प्रार्थना और समर्पण कुछ इस प्रकार से भी कर सकते हैं, “प्रभु यीशु, मैं अपने पापों के लिए पश्चातापी हूँ, उनके लिए आप से क्षमा माँगता हूँ। मैं आपका धन्यवाद करता हूँ कि आपने मेरे पापों की क्षमा और समाधान के लिए उन पापों को अपने ऊपर लिया, उनके कारण मेरे स्थान पर क्रूस की मृत्यु सही, गाड़े गए, और मेरे उद्धार के लिए आप तीसरे दिन जी भी उठे, और आज जीवित प्रभु परमेश्वर हैं। कृपया मुझे और मेरे पापों को क्षमा करें, मुझे अपनी शरण में लें, और मुझे अपना शिष्य बना लें। मैं अपना जीवन आप के हाथों में समर्पित करता हूँ।” सच्चे और समर्पित मन से की गई आपकी एक प्रार्थना आपके वर्तमान तथा भविष्य को, इस लोक के और परलोक के जीवन को, अनन्तकाल के लिए स्वर्गीय एवं आशीषित बना देगी।

Building the Church – 2 – On Peter? – 2
To worthily fulfil his responsibility of being a steward of God given things and privileges, every Born-Again Christian Believer must learn about those things and privileges that God has given to him to live his Christian life and fulfill his responsibilities, along with salvation. In this context, presently, we are learning about the Believer being a steward of the Church of God, and of the fellowship of God’s other children. To understand about the Church, we have considered seven metaphors used in the Bible for the Church, and learnt lessons from them. One common thought and lesson throughout these seven metaphors has been that the Lord’s Church, is from the Lord, by the Lord, and for the Lord; and never has it in any way been from man, by man, for man. Since the last article we have started to learn about the Lord Jesus building His Church. We have begun with considering a very common but wrong notion in Christendom that the Lord Jesus has said that He will build His Church on His disciple Peter. To Biblically understand this topic, in the previous article we briefly reviewed the basic principles of interpreting the Bible that we will use for this study. We also put before ourselves three questions; and on their basis we will be considering this topic today and in the coming few articles.
Today we will look at the first of the three questions, that is based on the Lord’s statement given in Matthew 16:18. Two things in Matthew 16:18 are the main cause of the confusion and misunderstanding about the Church being built on Peter - (i) The assumption that the Lord used the words “on this rock” for Peter; and (ii) The meaning of “Peter” in the original Greek language. Before taking up these two questions, let us first consider the context of this verse and its implications regarding interpretation. The immediate context of Matthew 16:18 are its preceding verses. These verses define the word ‘this’ used here by the Lord, and clarify the actual meaning of the word ‘Peter.’ Therefore, this verse should be studied along with its preceding verses, i.e., from Matthew 16:13 onwards.
In Matthew 16:13-14 the Lord Jesus is asking His disciples, what do the people say about Him; and in verse 15, the disciples tell Him what the people think. Then, in verse 15, the Lord asks the disciples what do they think about Him. For this, “Simon Peter answered and said, "You are the Christ, the Son of the living God."” (Matthew 16:16); and the Lord in verse 17 appreciating Peter’s answer, commends him for it, and says to him “...for flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but My Father who is in heaven”. Take note that the Lord says to him “revealed this to you;” clearly the “this” here is meant for the revelation given to Peter by God the Father about God’s Son, Lord Jesus Christ. Now if mentally, you remove the artificial division of this passage into verses, and consider the passage from verse 17-19 as one continual thought, as it had been written in the original text, then there is no confusion in understanding that the “this” of verse 18 is related and about the same thing as the “this” of verse 17. In other words, the “this” of verse 18 is not about Peter but about the revelation given by God the Father to Peter. Also take note that if in verse 18 the Lord Jesus had wanted to say that He will build His Church on Peter, then instead of the word “this” for Peter, the more appropriate word which He would have used would have been “on you”, and not “on this rock.”
Now let us look at the second thing that causes the confusion and misunderstanding about this verse. In the original Greek language, the Lord has used figures of speech in this conversation. Recall that in His first meeting with Peter, the Lord had said to him, “...You are Simon the son of Jonah. You shall be called Cephas (which is translated, A Stone)” (John 1:42). The word cephas used here is a word of the Syriac language, and its Greek translation is ‘petros’, from which the name Peter has been derived. Both these words, Syriac cephas and Greek Petros, mean the same thing - a small stone or pebble. In Mathew 16:18, in the opening sentence of this verse, the Lord is reminding Peter the same thing, that he is ‘petros’ i.e., ‘cephas’, i.e., only a small stone or a pebble. But in the next sentence of verse 18 the Lord does not use the word ‘petros’, but says ‘petra’ which means a big rock. By putting the original language words and their meanings in the verse where they have been used, Matthew 16:18 can be paraphrased as: “And I also say to you that you are Peter [petros - a small stone or pebble], and on this rock [petra - rock, that which is large, firm, and immoveable] I will build My church, and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it.”
Now, by putting together all these things, and the figures of speech used by the Lord, we can understand the correct meaning of this verse. This meaning can then be affirmed by checking if it is consistent with the other related things given in the Bible, and by analyzing Peter’s ministry – as we will see while considering the second and third questions given in the previous article. By taking all of these things together, what the Lord has said in this verse, can be stated like this: “you are a small stone/a pebble. I will build My Church on this firmly established and immovable, rock-solid truth, i.e., what God the Father has revealed to you, that I am Jesus the Son of the Living God; and the gates of Hades will not be able to prevail upon the Church I will build on this rock.” As we will seen in our consideration of the other two questions, this statement of the Lord is consistent with the other things mentioned in the Scriptures. An examination of the life of Peter too reveals that he could never be the foundation of the Church of the Lord Jesus; the Church could never have been built on him; and to assume anything like this is to bring errors and contradictions in God’s Word.
If you are a Christian Believer, then you should learn to discern and understand the truths of God’s Word under the guidance and teaching of the Holy Spirit. Do not accept anything and everything as the truth unless and until you have cross-checked and verified it from the Bible with the help of the Holy Spirit. More so when that thing does not seem to be consistent with the other related things of the Bible.
If you have not yet accepted the discipleship of the Lord, make your decision in favor of the Lord Jesus now to ensure your eternal life and heavenly blessings. Where there is obedience to the Lord, where there is respect and obedience to His Word, there is also the blessing and protection of the Lord. Repenting of your sins, and asking the Lord Jesus for forgiveness of your sins, voluntarily and sincerely, surrendering yourself to Him - is the only way to salvation and heavenly life. You only have to say a short but sincere prayer to the Lord Jesus Christ willingly and with a penitent heart, and at the same time completely commit and submit your life to Him. You can also make this prayer and submission in words something like, “Lord Jesus, I am sorry for my sins and repent of them. I thank you for taking my sins upon yourself, paying for them through your life. Because of them you died on the cross in my place, were buried, and you rose again from the grave on the third day for my salvation, and today you are the living Lord God and have freely provided to me the forgiveness, and redemption from my sins, through faith in you. Please forgive my sins, take me under your care, and make me your disciple. I submit my life into your hands." Your one prayer from a sincere and committed heart will make your present and future life, in this world and in the hereafter, heavenly and blessed for eternity.
