Things Related to Christian Living – 83

The Four Pillars of Christian Living - 4 - Prayer (25)

One of the components of living a practical Christian life is prayer. Nowadays, Satan has spread many wrong concepts related to living a Christian life. Therefore, the life and behavior of the present-day Christians and of the churches is quite different from the way of living and behavior of the initial Christians and the churches at that time. But still, the things from outside of God’s Word are readily accepted and followed. The main reason for these wrong things having entered and taken root in the lives of the Christians is their moving away from personal Bible study, and depending only upon the Pastors, Church Elders, and Preachers; having a blind faith in whatever they say, and following them without first examining and cross checking them. If everything is examined and cross-checked from the Bible before accepting and following it, Satan will not have any opportunity to spread his lies. Therefore, we are learning about the actual form and observance of things related to practical Christian living from the examples and the text given in God’s Word. Presently, while learning about prayer, we are now considering the so-called “Lord’s Prayer” through Matthew 6:5-15. The children are made to memorize this “prayer” from their childhood, and then for the rest of their lives, on every occasion and for every circumstance, they keep repeating it, without knowing or understanding anything about it. But, as we have seen in the earlier articles, the Lord had not given it to His disciples to be used in such a manner as it is being used today. This is an outline, a framework, based on which the Christians have to build and mold their personal prayers. From this section of Matthew, we have seen from verses 5 to 8 of this section of Matthew, that before presenting ourselves before God in prayer, we should make some preparations about what we are going to ask God for, and why; and, how we should make ourselves ready to come before God. From today we will start considering this “Lord’s Prayer” given in verses 9-13.

The Lord Jesus at the beginning of this outline or framework said “In this manner, therefore, pray: Our Father in heaven, Hallowed be Your name. Your kingdom come. Your will be done On earth as it is in heaven” (Matthew 6:9-10). This framework, this outline of prayer given by the Lord, can broadly be divided into three parts - the opening address (verses 9-10), the topics for asking (verses 11-13a), and the ending (verse 13b). In this framework of prayer, both, the opening address, and the ending are God’s worship, i.e., exalting and honoring Him. The middle part is about the things we should be coming to God for. In other words, the people of God, those who desire to receive something from God, should not just be those who ask for things from God, but also be those who worship Him, praise and honor Him. To worship Father God, to exalt and honor Him shows that we recognize His stature, His being all-in-all, the most high, the highest authority, everything being under His control, and His being the only one who has the ability to fulfill all our needs, and with this in mind we have come before Him for our needs. When we acknowledge the true stature of God, of His being all-in-all, give Him the first place in our lives, and mold our lives and behavior in accordance with these, then automatically we will also take care that whatever we say to Him, whatever we ask of Him, it is consistent with the stature and attributes of God. So, anything that we ask for or say, should not in any way be anything that in any way diminishes anything related to His characteristics and stature, is in any way insulting to Him, or brings Him down in any manner. Only then will we have this hope that Father God will listen to us and answer favorably.

We have seen in the earlier articles that God’s assurance to listen and answer prayers, contrary to the popular but wrong concept, is only for the true, surrendered, obedient disciples of the Lord; it has not been given for everyone. We have also seen from John 3:3, 5 that to be a true disciple of the Lord means to be a truly Born-Again Christian Believer, to be a member of God’s family (John 1:12-13). On this basis, the first thing that the Lord has said in this outline of prayer is “Our Father.” In other words, the basis of conversing with God, of having the desire to ask and receive something from Him, is our relationship with God. The first thing that we should understand about is our relationship with God. Those who do not have a Father and child relationship with God, should first rectify this deficiency in their lives, and then, having become a child of God, have the desire to receive anything from God. When a person recognizes himself as a member of God’s family, then in his life and behavior, in his desires and expectations, he is also careful to ensure that his conversation with God should be according to the dignity and honor of this familial relationship. Nothing of what he says or does should in any way bring a bad name, and no one should have any reason or opportunity to point fingers on his Father God and other members of his family. That is to say that with the realization of this Father and child relationship with God, the life, behavior, desires, expectations, etc., automatically start changing for the better, the vain things start falling away, and the person starts conforming to the will and Word of Father God. In such a situation, it is only natural that his prayers and ‘wants’ will also start becoming consistent with God’s will and Word, and will become acceptable to God.

There is a tendency seen in many people that they use phrases like “through the blood of Jesus” or “through the Cross of the Lord” or something else like these, to come before God with their requests. In God’s Word, the one and only basis of approaching God is the Father and child relationship with God. Using anything other than this to address God, even though it may sound reverential, it is not consistent with the examples given in God’s Word. They are additions to God’s Word, something that has been forbidden. There is no rationale and no utility for them on the basis of God’s Word. The phrase given by the Lord Jesus for addressing God is “Our Father.” Therefore, instead of adding anything new to God’s Word, instead of following anything according to the wisdom and understanding of any man, following what has been said and given by the Lord is the correct and appropriate thing to do. In the next article, we will carry on from here.

If you have not yet accepted the discipleship of the Lord, make your decision in favor of the Lord Jesus now to ensure your eternal life and heavenly blessings. Where there is obedience to the Lord, where there is respect and obedience to His Word, there is also the blessing and protection of the Lord. Repenting of your sins, and asking the Lord Jesus for forgiveness of your sins, voluntarily and sincerely, surrendering yourself to Him - is the only way to salvation and heavenly life. You only have to say a short but sincere prayer to the Lord Jesus Christ willingly and with a penitent heart, and at the same time completely commit and submit your life to Him. You can also make this prayer and submission in words something like, “Lord Jesus, I am sorry for my sins and repent of them. I thank you for taking my sins upon yourself, paying for them through your life.  Because of them you died on the cross in my place, were buried, and you rose again from the grave on the third day for my salvation, and today you are the living Lord God and have freely provided to me the forgiveness, and redemption from my sins, through faith in you. Please forgive my sins, take me under your care, and make me your disciple. I submit my life into your hands." Your one prayer from a sincere and committed heart will make your present and future life, in this world and in the hereafter, heavenly and blessed for eternity.

Things Related to Christian Living – 82

The Four Pillars of Christian Living - 4 - Prayer (24)

We have been learning about living a practical Christian life through the examples and the text of God’s Word. Currently we have been considering the fourth of the four things given in Acts 2:42. For the past few articles we have been considering the so-called “Lord’s Prayer” on the basis of the Word of God. We have seen that it is not something given by the Lord to memorize, and then by rote keep reciting it on every occasion, in every circumstance. Rather, it is an outline, a framework for constructing and molding the personal prayers of the people of the Lord to make them effective. We have begun to consider this from Matthew 6:5-15. In the previous article we have seen and understood about the preliminary preparations that should be done before praying, from verses 5 and 6. In this context we have seen from verse five that praying should be to converse with God. It should not be to show-off our eloquence and use of figurative language to others for impressing them, nor should prayer be words spoken to gain the praise and appreciation of people; else, there will be no results of such prayers. The second thing that we learnt from verse 6 is that sincere prayer is said by isolating ourselves from the attractions and distractions of the world, and being joined only to the Lord. Today we will proceed further from here, and learn some more from the Word and the Lord’s teachings.

For praying sincerely to God the Father, it is written in Matthew 6:7, “And when you pray, do not use vain repetitions as the heathen do. For they think that they will be heard for their many words.” In other words, the impact and efficacy of the prayers made to God are not dependent upon the volume and type of words used, especially on habitually repeating some word or phrases over and over again. Some people are habituated to very frequently repeating their favorite words or phrases over and over again in every sentence, in their prayers or worship. Here the Lord has asked to stop such tendencies and come out of them. Moreover, the Lord has called doing this “vain repetition” and praying or worshiping like the heathen. These are sharp words, used by the Lord to emphatically show the vanity of such prayers. Not just here in the New Testament, but God the Holy Spirit also had the same thing written by Solomon in the Book of Ecclesiastes, “Walk prudently when you go to the house of God; and draw near to hear rather than to give the sacrifice of fools, for they do not know that they do evil. Do not be rash with your mouth, And let not your heart utter anything hastily before God. For God is in heaven, and you on earth; Therefore, let your words be few” (Ecclesiastes 5:1-2). Through the inspiration of God, Solomon has clearly written that speaking excessively and saying unnecessary things is like offering the sacrifice of fools, is evil. Man should approach God, more to listen to God than to make God listen to him; and man’s words spoken before God should be few. It is apparent from these that as far as it can be done, before praying to God, the person saying the prayer should ponder over it in his heart and see why he is approaching God? What is he going to say to Him? What words is he going to speak before Him? So that their prayers do not seem like vain repetitions of the fools and of heathen in the eyes of God. Moreover, those praying should not only approach God to speak to Him, but they should also be willing and prepared to listen to God.

Then, in Matthew 6:8, carrying the thought of Matthew 6:7 ahead, the Lord Jesus said, “Therefore do not be like them. For your Father knows the things you have need of before you ask Him.” The Lord has told His disciples that before they ask anything, God already knows about their needs and everything else. So, there is no need to try to make God understand anything, to teach and explain things to Him. Our saying what we have to say in a clear, straightforward, and succinct manner makes our prayers acceptable to Him, impactful and effective. We have already seen in the initial articles on prayer, why when God already knows about our needs, do we at all need to pray to Him for anything? Mainly, because by praying, we show to ourselves and to others listening to us, the meaningfulness of our prayers, and our mentality in our conversation with God. When we listen to our own words - whether in our hearts or through our ears, then we learn better whether we are sincerely saying our prayers to converse with God, or saying them for the sake of the people listening to us and to impress them. Because the prayers that are said for God to hear, they will be according to His will, and consistent with His instructions; whereas the prayers meant for people to hear, to impress the people, they will be according to what the people want to hear and to impress them. Also, consider and pay attention to the initial sentence of verse 8 “Therefore do not be like them.” Here the Lord is placing a challenge related to prayer, before His disciples. The Lord is saying to them that to make their prayers acceptable to God and effective, is in their own hands. It is the disciple’s own decision and behavior, what they want to say or do. The Lord’s advice to them is that they do not become like the heathen, vainly repeating things in their prayers; but to accept this advice and practically apply it in their lives, is each disciple’s personal decision and behavior.

Having briefly seen the preliminary preparations necessary before praying, from the next article, we will start considering the so-called “Lord’s Prayer” given in Matthew 6:9-13, seeing the outline and the framework for an effective prayer given to us by the Lord.

Things Related to Christian Living – 81

The Four Pillars of Christian Living - 4 - Prayer (23)

Presently we are considering the fourth of the four things related to practical Christian living, given in Acts 2:42, i.e., prayer, through the examples and references given in God’s Word about it. Having considered some wrong notions, false teachings, and inappropriate concepts about prayer, we are now considering the very commonly spoken “Lord’s prayer.” We have seen from what is written about this ‘prayer’ and the way this ‘prayer’ has been used in the Bible, that this is not a ‘prayer’ to be spoken by rote on all occasions, without understanding or pondering over it. Rather, it is an outline, a framework given by the Lord, based on which the Christians should mold their prayers, for their prayers to be effective. Today we will begin considering and understanding this outline or framework or effectively praying to God, briefly. For this we will use Matthew 6:5-15, since not only is this somewhat more detailed, but is also the first form of what the Lord has said about this “prayer.”

In this section from the Sermon on the Mount spoken by the Lord regarding prayer, not only has He spoken about praying, but also about the preliminary preparations related to praying. Here, in verse 5, we see that for praying to God, for sincerely conversing with Him, the initial preparation, the basic requirement is to first understand the essence of praying to God. To recognize, and observe the basic fact that what we are going to do, is not to show-off to the people, nor is it for being appreciated and commended by people. The things that have been spoken here in these verses, the teachings that have been given here, are all in very simple and straightforward words and sentences. There is no usage of any eloquence, nor of any ornamental or figurative language here. Stil, in these few words and verses so much has been said, and has been said in a manner that people are unable to say in the long and verbose prayers they say. For praying to God, the first instruction given by the Lord is that we should first prepare ourselves to express ourselves to God, instead of trying to show-off to people and impress them, to get their admiration and acclaim, in the name of praying to God. Those who pray to get the admiration and acclaim of the people, who use eloquent and ornamental or figurative language to impress people in the name of prayer, the Lord very clearly says something to them in this verse to caution them, “...they have their reward.” Now they should not expect anything more as an answer to their prayers from God the Father. The essence of what the Lord has said is that the prayers should be straightforward, clear, and to-the-point; they should be for conversing with God, not to impress people, to show-off to them.

Carrying this same thought ahead, in verse 6 the Lord has said that if one really wants to converse with God, then it should be done in a place where there are no disturbances and distractions that interfere in this conversation with God. It is only natural that when prayers are said in solitude, they will be more realistic, and in a clear, simple, and straightforward manner. The prayers that are said in secret, in contrast to the kind of prayers said in verse 5, their rewards will be given not by men, but by God. Now, pay attention to the construction of this sentence; the Lord has said for such a prayer that God “...will reward you openly.” In other words, the answer to such prayers is not a possibility, but a certainty. When the disciples of the Lord turn away from impressing people, instead of trying to impress people and show-off to them, truly join themselves with God, converse with God and express themselves in a clear, straightforward, to-the-point manner, then God too listens to them and answers them. It is implied over here that when a true disciple of the Lord will express his heart to the Lord and ask for something, then it will not be something that is inappropriate or inconsistent with the attributes of God. In contrast, the prayers made to impress people and to show-off to them will be of the kind that the people like to hear, whether or not their content is consistent with what God wants to hear. Therefore, there is no possibility of such prayers being heard or answered. This verse should not be taken to mean that it forbids the praying in a gathering or that God will not answer corporate prayers. The disciples of the Lord can, even in assemblies and gathering, in corporate settings, pray without being concerned about the people present, in a simple, straightforward, clear manner, express themselves sincerely to God; and then God will listen to their prayers and answer them.

In the next article we will carry on considering about this section, about the Lord’s teachings on prayer.

Things Related to Christian Living – 80

The Four Pillars of Christian Living - 4 - Prayer (22)

We are studying things related to practical Christian living, and presently are considering the fourth of the four things given in Acts 2:42, prayer, on the basis of the examples and references given in the Bible. In the previous articles, having seen what prayer is, why Christian Believers should continually stay connected to God in prayer, what kind of prayers does God answer in the affirmative, the meaning and utilization of asking “in faith” and “in the name of Jesus,” etc., from the previous article we have begun to consider another wrong concept about the ‘Lord’s Prayer.’ In the previous article we had seen that the Lord Jesus has spoken of this “prayer” (Matthew 6:9-13) for the first time to His disciples as a part of His teachings related to prayer (Matthew 6:5-15) in the Sermon on the Mount; the second time this “prayer” is given is in Luke 11:1-4, when the disciples had requested the Lord to teach them to pray. Other than these two instances, in the whole of the New Testament there is no mention of this ‘Lord’s Prayer,’ nor of using it in any manner, nor of giving any teachings about it at any place. The form and utilization of this “prayer” as practiced by the current Christians, has not been given in the Bible. It was never practiced the way it is being practiced nowadays, amongst the initial Christian Believers and the initial churches. All of these are man-made additions to the Word.

In His Sermon on the Mount, the Lord is telling and teaching His disciples the correct form of the incorrect teachings given to them by the then religious leaders. We find the Lord repeatedly using “you have heard” or something to that effect, and then “but I tell you,” or something to that effect. While changing the form and meaning of the prevalent religious practices of the then Jewish society, the Lord also says that He has not come to break the Law but to fulfill it (Matthew 5:17-18). The implication is that in the Sermon on the Mount, the Lord is telling and teaching His disciples the actual and correct teachings; and a part of these teachings were the teachings related to prayer, and the form of prayer given to the disciples by the Lord, which today is known as the ‘Lord’s Prayer.’ Therefore, if it is seen in the actual form as it has been given in the Word, then it is not prayer said by the Lord, but a teaching or instruction on correctly or appropriately praying to God. Later, when in Luke 11:1-4 the disciples requested the Lord to reach them to pray, then the Lord repeated the same teaching that He had given to them in Matthew 6:9-13 once again. As we have noted and considered in the previous article, other than these two instances, this “prayer” has not been stated anywhere else in the whole of the Word, neither by the Lord, nor by any of His disciples, in any context; nor has it ever been used for any purpose, nor has any teaching been given about it at any time. If it really was a “prayer” taught by the Lord, then quite naturally, it would be something of great significance; the disciples would have used it, would have taught it to others, its exposition and importance and its appropriate use and the consequent blessings would have been taught in God’s Word. We have seen in an earlier article about John chapter 15, where the Lord has taught the disciples what they need to do to receive positive answers from God for their prayers. Though this would have been a very appropriate time and context for this, but here too, the Lord did not say anything related to the ‘Lord’s Prayer’, did not remind the disciples about the “prayer” nor did he teach them anything more about it. Even in the letters, there are many things written by the Lord’s people related to prayer, its necessity, importance etc.; but there too, this “prayer” has never been mentioned in any context, nor has anything been said about any teaching related to it.

On considering these things, the thing that becomes apparent is that this so-called ‘Lord’s Prayer’ in reality, is not a prayer, but is a teaching, an instruction given by the Lord on prayer, and we find the other related instructions in the other verses of Matthew 6:5-15. The section of Matthew 6:9-13, which is popularly known, taught and followed as being the ‘Lord’s Prayer’ is actually an outline, a framework, based on which the disciples of the Lord should mold and construct their prayers, as well as teach others about how to pray. The Lord’s purpose was to teach His disciples how to pray effectively and functionally; and we have seen in the previous articles that even for the true disciples of the Lord, God answers in the affirmative only those prayers that are in His will and consistent with His Word. Prayers said according to this outline or framework given by the Lord will undoubtedly be those that are acceptable to God, and answered affirmatively by Him. This in turn, will make these people firm and steady in their Christian faith, and edify them in their spiritual lives. But Satan has corrupted this Lord given method of effective prayer, and has established this false concept in their hearts that by their ritually and perfunctorily repeating over and over again this outline or framework for effective prayers as a “prayer,” by using it as a chant or a “mantra” God will be pleased with them, and they will receive God’s blessings, their problems will be solved. And since this does not happen, therefore people become disinterested in praying, unhappy with God, and shy away from becoming true Christian Believers. And this serves Satan's purpose of keeping people away from the Lord and salvation very well.

In the next article we will try to understand the outline or framework of this so-called ‘Lord’s Prayer.’
