पवित्र आत्मा द्वारा समझ-बूझ - यूहन्ना 16:12-13

हम देखते आ रहे हैं कि मसीही विश्वासी की मसीही सेवकाई परमेश्वर पवित्र आत्मा की सहायता और मार्गदर्शन से ही संभव है। हमने यूहन्ना 16:8-11 से इस सेवकाई के विषय में देखा है, कि मसीही सेवक में परमेश्वर पवित्र आत्मा की उपस्थिति का प्रमाण, उस मसीही के जीवन, व्यवहार, और कार्य के द्वारा संसार के लोगों को ‘निरुत्तर’ या कायल किया जाना है। मसीही विश्वासी, पवित्र आत्मा की सहायता और मार्गदर्शन द्वारा, संसार के लोगों पर पाप, धार्मिकता, और न्याय के बारे में उन लोगों के विचार, व्यवहार, और धारणाओं की तुलना में मसीही शिक्षाओं और जीवन को रखता है, अपने जीवन से उन्हें प्रदर्शित करता है। संसार और मसीही विश्वास के मध्य का यह तुलनात्मक प्रकटीकरण, स्वतः ही संसार के लोगों को कायल करने के लिए पर्याप्त है। बाइबल के अनुसार यही अपने आप में मसीही विश्वासी में पवित्र आत्मा की उपस्थिति का प्रमाण है। मसीही विश्वासियों के परिवर्तित जीवन, उनका खरा व्यवहार, और परमेश्वर के भय में होकर किए गए उनके कार्य, संसार के लोगों में उनके प्रति एक ऐसे ‘भय’ या आदर का भाव उत्पन्न कर देते हैं (प्रेरितों 2:43; 5:11; 9:31; 19:17), जो अपने आप में उनके संसार के लोगों से पृथक तथा उनमें एक अलौकिक सामर्थ्य के विद्यमान होने का प्रमाण होता है।

 

आज बहुत से लोग, मत, समुदाय, और डिनॉमिनेशंस पवित्र आत्मा के नाम पर बाइबल से बाहर की बातों, व्यवहार, और शिक्षाओं के आधार पर लोगों को पवित्र आत्मा की उपस्थिति दिखाने और प्रमाणित करने की शिक्षाएं देने में लगे हुए हैं। किन्तु प्रभु द्वारा कही गई इन बातों पर ध्यान देना, उन्हें बताना और सिखाना उनके ‘प्रमाणों’ का भाग नहीं हैं। इसीलिए हम देखते हैं कि न ही संसार के लोग उनके जीवन तथा व्यवहार के कारण पाप, धार्मिकता, और न्याय के विषय कायल होते हैं; और न ही उनके प्रति वह आदर या ‘भय’ की भावना संसार के लोगों में उत्पन्न होती है, जो आरंभिक मसीही विश्वासियों के जीवन और कार्यों से सभी स्थानों के लोगों के मध्य होती थी। वरन इन गलत शिक्षाओं को बताने और सिखाने वालों के व्यवहार को लेकर, लोगों में 1 कुरिन्थियों 14:23 के अनुसार प्रतिक्रिया अधिक देखी जाती है। उनका यह बाइबल की शिक्षाओं से पूर्णतः भिन्न व्यवहार और अनुचित शिक्षाएं न तो उनमें परमेश्वर पवित्र आत्मा की उपस्थिति को प्रमाणित करते हैं, और न ही परमेश्वर की महिमा का कारण ठहरते हैं; वरन परमेश्वर और बाइबल की बातों के उपहास और अविश्वास को ही बढ़ावा देते हैं।

 

मसीही सेवकाई के लिए शिष्यों को तैयार करते हुए, यूहन्ना 16 अध्याय की चर्चा में, प्रभु ने 12 और 13 पद में एक और बात अपने शिष्यों के समक्ष रखी: “मुझे तुम से और भी बहुत सी बातें कहनी हैं, परन्तु अभी तुम उन्हें सह नहीं सकते। परन्तु जब वह अर्थात सत्य का आत्मा आएगा, तो तुम्हें सब सत्य का मार्ग बताएगा, क्योंकि वह अपनी ओर से न कहेगा, परन्तु जो कुछ सुनेगा, वही कहेगा, और आने वाली बातें तुम्हें बताएगा” (यूहन्ना 16:12-13)। ये शिष्य लगभग साढ़े-तीन वर्ष से प्रभु यीशु के साथ रहे थे, प्रभु से सीखते रहे थे, प्रभु के भेजे जाने पर सुसमाचार प्रचार के लिए भी गए थे और उन्होंने आश्चर्यकर्म भी किए तथा दुष्टात्माओं को भी निकाला था। किन्तु अब, अपनी पृथ्वी की सेवकाई के अंतिम समय में आ कर, और उन्हें उनकी आने वाले दिनों की सेवकाई के विषय, प्रभु उनसे कहता है “मुझे तुम से और भी बहुत सी बातें कहनी हैं, परन्तु अभी तुम उन्हें सह नहीं सकते।” मूल यूनानी भाषा के जिस शब्द का हिन्दी अनुवाद ‘सह’ किया गया है, उसका मूल भाषा का अर्थ है “उठाना” या “निर्वाह करना”। अर्थात प्रभु से साढ़े तीन वर्ष प्रशिक्षण पाने, और सामर्थी कार्य कर लेने के बाद भी उनके लिए सेवकाई से संबंधित अभी “बहुत सी बातें” थीं, जिन्हें उन शिष्यों को जानना, सीखना, और समझना अभी शेष था। और जैसा यूहन्ना 16:13 में लिखा है, ये बातें, परमेश्वर पवित्र आत्मा ने ही आ कर उन्हें सिखाना था। इन बातों का, जो केवल पवित्र आत्मा की सामर्थ्य और सहायता से सीखी, समझी, और निर्वाह की जा सकती हैं, एक उदाहरण यूहन्ना 6:60-66 में हमें मिलता है, जहाँ आने वाले समय में स्थापित किए जाने वाले प्रभु-भोज से संबंधित प्रभु की शिक्षाओं को उनके कई शिष्य समझ नहीं सके, सहन नहीं कर सके, और उन्हें छोड़कर चले गए। किन्तु आज, मसीही विश्वासियों के लिए, उनके लिए जिनमें उद्धार के साथ ही पवित्र आत्मा आकार निवास करने लगता है, प्रभु-भोज से संबंधित इन शिक्षाओं को ग्रहण करना कठिन नहीं है; क्योंकि उनमें बसने वाला पवित्र आत्मा उन्हें उन बातों के विषय बताता है, उनका पालन करना सिखाता है।

यदि आप मसीही विश्वासी हैं, तो आपके जीवन में परमेश्वर पवित्र आत्मा की क्या भूमिका और कार्य प्रकट होते हैं? क्या आपका मसीही जीवन आज संसार के लोगों के समक्ष एक आधारभूत परिवर्तन का जीवन, उन लोगों के जीवन और व्यवहार से पृथक तुलना का जीवन प्रस्तुत करता है? क्या संसार के लोगों में आपके जीवन, व्यवहार, कार्य, आदि के द्वारा आपके तथा आपके परमेश्वर के प्रति एक आदर का, ‘भय’ का भाव उत्पन्न होता है? या फिर वे आपकी बातों और व्यवहार के कारण आपका तथा आपके परमेश्वर और विश्वास का उपहास करते हैं, और अविश्वास करते हैं? अपने मसीही जीवन, व्यवहार, और शिक्षाओं को परख कर देखें (1 थिस्सलुनीकियों 5:21), और केवल उन बातों को ही थामें रहने जो परमेश्वर के वचन के अनुसार हैं; न कि उन बातों के पालन में लगे रहें जो आपके मत या डिनॉमिनेशन के अनुसार हैं (गलातियों 1:10)। तब ही आप प्रभावी मसीही सेवक बन सकेंगे; अन्यथा विचित्र व्यवहार, और चिह्न-चमत्कारों के चक्करों में पड़े हुए, इन बातों पर आधारित गलत शिक्षाओं में भटकते रहेंगे, इन्हें ही पवित्र आत्मा की उपस्थिति और सामर्थ्य के प्रमाण मानते रहेंगे। और अंततः जब आँख खुलेगी, समझ आएगी कि शैतान भी अपनी शक्ति से यही सब कर सकता है और करता रहता है (2 कुरिन्थियों 11:3, 13-15; 2 थिस्सलुनीकियों 2:9-12), तब तक बहुत देर हो चुकेगी, आप सब कुछ गँवा चुके होंगे, और गलती सुधारने के अवसर समाप्त हो चुके होंगे।

   

यदि आपने प्रभु की शिष्यता को अभी तक स्वीकार नहीं किया है, तो थोड़ा थम कर विचार कीजिए, क्या मसीही विश्वास के अतिरिक्त आपको कहीं और यह अद्भुत और विलक्षण आशीषों से भरा सौभाग्य प्राप्त होगा, कि स्वयं परमेश्वर आप में आ कर सर्वदा के लिए निवास करे; आपको धर्मी बनाए; आपको अपना वचन सिखाए; और आपको शैतान की युक्तियों और हमलों से सुरक्षित रखने के सभी प्रयोजन करके दे? और फिर, आप में होकर अपने आप को तथा अपनी धार्मिकता को औरों पर प्रकट करे, आपको खरा आँकलन करने और सच्चा न्याय करने वाला बनाए; तथा आप में होकर पाप में भटके लोगों को उद्धार और अनन्त जीवन प्रदान करने के अपने अद्भुत कार्य करे, जिससे अंततः आपको ही अपनी ईश्वरीय आशीषों से भर सके? इसलिए अपने अनन्त जीवन और स्वर्गीय आशीषों को सुनिश्चित करने के लिए अभी प्रभु यीशु के पक्ष में अपना निर्णय कर लीजिए। जहाँ प्रभु की आज्ञाकारिता है, उसके वचन की बातों का आदर और पालन है, वहाँ प्रभु की आशीष और सुरक्षा भी है। स्वेच्छा और सच्चे मन से अपने पापों के लिए पश्चाताप करके, उनके लिए प्रभु से क्षमा माँगकर, अपने आप को उसकी अधीनता में समर्पित कर दीजिए - उद्धार और स्वर्गीय जीवन का यही एकमात्र मार्ग है। आप अपने पापों के अंगीकार और पश्चाताप करके, प्रभु यीशु से समर्पण की प्रार्थना कुछ इस प्रकार से भी कर सकते हैं, “प्रभु यीशु मैं आपका धन्यवाद करता हूँ कि आपने मेरे पापों की क्षमा और समाधान के लिए मेरे सभी पापों को अपने ऊपर लिया, उनके कारण मेरे स्थान पर क्रूस की मृत्यु सही, गाड़े गए, और मेरे उद्धार के लिए आप तीसरे दिन जी भी उठे, और आज जीवित प्रभु परमेश्वर हैं। कृपया मेरे पापों को क्षमा करें, मुझे अपनी शरण में लें, और मुझे अपना शिष्य बना लें। मैं अपना जीवन आप के हाथों में समर्पित करता हूँ।” प्रभु की शिष्यता तथा मन परिवर्तन के लिए सच्चे पश्चाताप और समर्पित मन से की गई आपकी एक प्रार्थना आपके वर्तमान तथा भविष्य को, इस लोक के और परलोक के जीवन को, अनन्तकाल के लिए स्वर्गीय एवं आशीषित बना देगी।

English Translation

Understanding Through the Holy Spirit - John 16:12-13

We have been seeing that the Christian Believer’s Christian Ministry is only possible through the guidance of the Holy Spirit. We have seen from John 16:8-11 about this ministry, and learned that the proof of the presence of the Holy Spirit in a person is through the fact that the people of the world are convicted by the life, behavior, and works of the Believer. The Christian Believer, by living and working through the help and guidance the Holy Spirit, places before the people of the world a contrast between their thinking, behavior, and notions and the Biblical teachings about sin, righteousness, and judgment, and demonstrates them through his life of obedience to God. The evident contrast between the ways of the world and the Christian living is by itself sufficient to convict the people of the world. According to the Bible, this by itself is proof of the Holy Spirit residing in the Christian Believer. The changed life of the Christian Believer, their commitment to their Savior, their living and working in the fear of the Lord, etc. create a “fear” i.e., awe or respect for them in people’s hearts (Acts 2:43; 5:11; 9:31; 19:17), proves that they are different from the world and have a divine power present and working in them.

Today numerous people, sects, groups, and denominations are preaching and teaching about the proofs of the presence of the Holy Spirit by things, behavior, and doctrines that are outside of, and inconsistent with the teachings of the Bible. These people, do not pay any heed to these things which the Lord Jesus has said, and, contrary to the Lord’s clear teachings about them, never teach them as the “proof” of the Holy Spirit. That is why we see that neither are the people of the world ever convicted about sin, righteousness, and judgment by their lives and behavior, nor do people have the “fear” i.e., awe or respect for them, as was seen through the lives and works of the Christian Believers of the first Church. Rather, it is more common to see the reaction mentioned in 1 Corinthians 14:23 because of the life, behavior, and works of these preachers and teachers or wrong, extra-Biblical doctrines. Their life, teachings, and works inconsistent with the Bible neither prove the presence of the Holy Spirit, nor bring glory to God; instead, they are often a cause for ridicule and disbelief in God and His Word the Bible.

While teaching and preparing His disciples for their Christian Ministry, in His discourse given in John chapter 16, the Lord Jesus stated another thing about the Holy Spirit in verses 12 and 13: “I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come” (John 16:12-13). These disciples had been with the Lord Jesus for about three and a half years, had learnt from Him, the Lord had sent them to preach the gospel, and they had also done miracles and cast out demons. But now, the Lord towards the end of His earthly ministry is saying to them, “I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now.” The word translated as “bear” in English, in the original Greek language means to “lift” or to “endure.” So, despite being trained by the Lord Jesus for about three and a half years, having learnt from Him, and having done miraculous works through the power the Lord had given them, there still remained “many things” which these disciples had to know, learn, and understand. And, as is written in John 16:13, these things God the Holy Spirit would come and teach them. An example of these things which can only be learnt through the help of the Holy Spirit, is given in John 6:60-66, where many of the disciples could not understand the teachings related to the Lord’s Table - which was still a future event for them, and left the Lord, went away from Him. But today, with the Holy Spirit residing in the Christian Believers from the moment of their being saved, it is not difficult for them to know and accept the teachings related to the Lord’s Table, because the Holy Spirit residing in them teaches them and helps them obey.

If you are a Christian Believer, then, are the role and works of the Holy Spirit evident from your life? Does your life present a contrast to the ways and life of the people of the world; do they see a fundamental change in your life since your coming into the Christian Faith? Your life, behavior, and works, do they bring a “fear” or respect for God amongst the people; or are they provoked to ridicule and disbelieve God? Please evaluate and examine your Christian life, behavior, and doctrines (1 Thessalonians 5:21), and only hold on to those which are consistent with God’s Word, instead of holding on to the teachings of your sect or denomination (Galatians 1:10). Only then can you become an effective Christian Believer; otherwise, you will keep wandering around in the wrong, unBiblical teachings, in pursuing odd behavior, in looking for signs and miracles, and wrongly keep believing these things as the proof of the Holy Spirit. Eventually, by the time you get to realize the truth that even Satan can do these things by his power (2 Corinthians 11:3, 13-15; 2 Thessalonians 2:9-12) it would be too late, the opportunities to rectify errors would have gone un-availed, and you would have lost your eternity.

If you are still thinking of yourself as being a Christian, because of being born in a particular family and having fulfilled the religious rites and rituals prescribed under your religion or denomination since your childhood, then you too need to come out of your misunderstanding of Biblical facts and start understanding and living according to what the Word of God says, instead of what any denominational creed says or teaches. Make the necessary corrections in your life now while you have the time and opportunity; lest by the time you realize your mistake, it is too late to do anything about it.

If you are still not Born Again, have not obtained salvation, or have not asked the Lord Jesus for forgiveness for your sins, then you have the opportunity to do so right now. A short prayer said voluntarily with a sincere heart, with heartfelt repentance for your sins, and a fully submissive attitude, “Lord Jesus, I confess that I have disobeyed You, and have knowingly or unknowingly, in mind, in thought, in attitude, and in deeds, committed sins. I believe that you have fully borne the punishment of my sins by your sacrifice on the cross, and have paid the full price of those sins for all eternity. Please forgive my sins, change my heart and mind towards you, and make me your disciple, take me with you." God longs for your company and wants to see you blessed, but to make this possible, is your personal decision. Will you not say this prayer now, while you have the time and opportunity to do so - the decision is yours.

पवित्र आत्मा - न्याय के लिए कायल करता है (यूहन्ना 16:11)

पिछले लेखों में हमने देखा है कि मसीही सेवकाई में, परमेश्वर पवित्र आत्मा अपने कार्य और सामर्थ्य को प्रभु यीशु के शिष्यों, अर्थात मसीही विश्वासियों में होकर करता है, और उनमें होकर संसार के लोगों के समक्ष मसीही जीवन के उदाहरण तथा वचन की शिक्षाओं को प्रत्यक्ष करता है। इस प्रकार से परमेश्वर पवित्र आत्मा मसीही विश्वासी यानि कि प्रभु यीशु के शिष्य बनने वालों के जीवन, व्यवहार, और विचारधारा में, मसीही विश्वास में आने के बाद आए परिवर्तन का प्रत्यक्ष एवं व्यावहारिक प्रमाण प्रदान करता है। साथ ही यह प्रत्यक्ष एवं व्यावहारिक प्रमाण औरों को भी प्रभावित एवं प्रोत्साहित करता है कि जैसा औरों के जीवन में हुआ है, वैसे ही उनके जीवन में भी हो। यूहन्ना 16:8 में पवित्र आत्मा ने तीन बातें लिखवाई हैं, जिनके विषय वह प्रभु यीशु के शिष्यों में होकर संसार को दोषी ठहराता, या कायल करता है। ये तीन बातें हैं - पाप, धार्मिकता, और न्याय। और फिर पद 9, 10, और 11 में इन तीनों के विषय टिप्पणी दी है। इनमें से पहली दो बातें, पाप तथा धार्मिकता के विषय कायल करना को हम यूहन्ना 16:9, 10 से पिछले दो लेखों में देख चुके हैं। आज हम तीसरी बात, न्याय के लिए कायल करने के विषय हम यूहन्ना 16:11 “न्याय के विषय में इसलिये कि संसार का सरदार दोषी ठहराया गया है” से कुछ शिक्षाएं लेंगे।

मूल यूनानी भाषा के जिस शब्द का अनुवाद यहाँ ‘न्याय’ किया गया है, उसका अर्थ होता है ‘पहचान करना’ या ‘निर्णय लेना’। जिससे ‘न्याय’ शब्द का सामान्य अभिप्राय, वैधानिक या कानूनी न्याय करना, यानि कि उनके अपराधों के लिए लोगों को दोषी ठहराना और दण्ड देना ध्यान में आता है। किन्तु इस शब्द का केवल यही - दोषी ठहराना और दण्ड देना ही एकमात्र अभिप्राय और प्रयोग नहीं है। इस शब्द का प्रयोग और अर्थ सही पहचान करने, परिस्थितियों का सही विश्लेषण करने, या व्यक्तियों का सही आँकलन करने और उनके विषय सही निर्णय करने, आदि के लिए भी किया जाता है। यूहन्ना 16:11 में पवित्र आत्मा द्वारा करवाए गए ‘न्याय’ और “संसार का सरदार” अर्थात शैतान के ‘न्याय’ के मध्य एक तुलना (contrast) रखी गई है। अर्थात, दोनों के ‘न्याय’ करने, यानि कि सही निर्णय देने, या सही पहचान, अथवा आँकलन करने में भिन्नता है। और परमेश्वर पवित्र आत्मा, मसीही विश्वासियों में होकर बिलकुल सटीक, सही, और पक्षपात रहित न्याय, उचित व्यवहार, या निर्णय करवाने के द्वारा, ऐसे उदाहरण प्रस्तुत करेगा जो संसार के लोगों द्वारा सांसारिक विचार और व्यवहार के अनुसार, “संसार के सरदार” के प्रभाव में होकर किए जाने वाले अनुचित एवं अपूर्ण न्याय, या निर्णय के बारे में उनको दोषी ठहराएंगे।

 

एकमात्र सच्चे और जीवते प्रभु परमेश्वर का न्याय सदा सच्चा, खरा, और पक्षपात रहित होता है। परमेश्वर के वचन बाइबल से इसके विषय दो प्रतिनिधित्व करने वाले हवाले देखिए; एक पुराने नियम में से और दूसरा नए नियम में से:

परमेश्वर का भय मानने वाले, तथा परमेश्वर के भय में होकर राज्य करने वाले यहूदा के राजा यहोशापात ने अपने प्रजा के ऊपर जब न्यायी ठहराए: “फिर उसने यहूदा के एक एक गढ़ वाले नगर में न्यायी ठहराया। और उसने न्यायियों से कहा, सोचो कि क्या करते हो, क्योंकि तुम जो न्याय करोगे, वह मनुष्य के लिये नहीं, यहोवा के लिये करोगे; और वह न्याय करते समय तुम्हारे साथ रहेगा। अब यहोवा का भय तुम में बना रहे; चौकसी से काम करना, क्योंकि हमारे परमेश्वर यहोवा में कुछ कुटिलता नहीं है, और न वह किसी का पक्ष करता और न घूस लेता है” (2 इतिहास 19:5-7)।

प्रभु यीशु मसीह ने अपने समय के धर्म के अगुवों को उनके व्यवहार और ‘न्याय’ के विषय उलाहना देते हुए, उन ‘धार्मिक’ लोगों से अपने विषय में कहा, “मैं अपने आप से कुछ नहीं कर सकता; जैसा सुनता हूं, वैसा न्याय करता हूं, और मेरा न्याय सच्चा है; क्योंकि मैं अपनी इच्छा नहीं, परन्तु अपने भेजने वाले की इच्छा चाहता हूं” (यूहन्ना 5:30); और “मुंह देखकर न्याय न चुकाओ, परन्तु ठीक ठीक न्याय चुकाओ” (यूहन्ना 7:24)।

निष्कर्ष यह कि मसीही विश्वास में आने के द्वारा व्यक्ति के मन, जीवन, विचार, और व्यवहार में जो परिवर्तन आता है, वह उसे परमेश्वर पवित्र आत्मा की अधीनता में खरा और सच्चा न्याय करने, या जाँच-परख करने, या सही आँकलन करके पक्षपात रहित निर्णय करने वाला बना देता है। उसका यह बदला हुआ व्यवहार, उसमें परमेश्वर पवित्र आत्मा की उपस्थिति का प्रमाण है। साथ ही उसका इस प्रकार का जीवन, पाप और पापमय प्रवृत्तियों तथा विचारधाराओं में रहने वाले, “संसार के सरदार” के प्रभाव में होकर कार्य करने वाले लोगों के समक्ष एक तुलना (contrast) रखता है, और उन्हें उनके अनुचित न्याय, व्यवहार, और विचार के लिए दोषी ठहराता है। 

यदि आप एक मसीही विश्वासी हैं, तो यूहन्ना 16:11 के समक्ष आपका जीवन कैसा है? यदि आप अभी इस पद के समक्ष अपने आप को दोषी पाते हैं, तो फिर आपको 2 कुरिन्थियों 13:5 के अनुसार अपने आप को और अपने मसीही विश्वास में होने के दावे का पुनः अवलोकन करने, अपने मसीही विश्वासी होने की समीक्षा करने की आवश्यकता है। मसीही विश्वासी होने के नाते, आप में विद्यमान परमेश्वर पवित्र आत्मा आपको संसार के लोगों के समान अनुचित न्याय नहीं करने देगा।  आप जब भी ऐसा करेंगे, वह आपके जीवन में खलबली उत्पन्न करेगा, आपके जीवन में तब तक बेचैनी रहेगी जब तक आप अपने इस गलत व्यवहार को सही नहीं कर लेंगे। और यदि आप फिर भी ढिठाई में ऐसे व्यवहार में बने रहेंगे, जो एक मसीही विश्वासी के लिए सही नहीं है, तो आपको ताड़ना में से भी होकर निकलना पड़ेगा, जिससे आप सुधारे जा सकें (इब्रानियों 12:5-11)।

English Translation

Holy Spirit Convicts of Judgment - John 16:11

We have seen in the previous articles that in Christian ministry, the Holy Spirit does His works and demonstrates His power through the disciples of the Lord Jesus, i.e., through the Born-Again Christian Believers. The Holy Spirit, through the Christian Believers, places before the people of the world the examples of Christian living and teachings from God’s Word. In this manner, God the Holy Spirit, through the changes that happen in the lives, thinking, and behavior of those who decide to become the disciples of the Lord Jesus, presents an evident, practical example of the change of heart and mind through the Christian Faith. This practical example also serves to influence and attract the others to experience the same changes in their lives as well.  In John 16:8, the Holy Spirit had recorded three things regarding which He convicts the world. These three are - sin, righteousness, and judgment; and then in verses 9, 10, and 11 He adds comments to each of these three. Of these three, we have already seen from John 16:9, 10 about convicting for sin and righteousness. Today we will consider the third, i.e., judgment from John 16:11 “of judgment, because the ruler of this world is judged” and draw some lessons from it.

The word translated as “judgment” in the original Greek language means “to discern” or “to decide” about something. From this the generally understood meaning of the word “judge” is derived, to legally or constitutionally judge, i.e., to hold people guilty for their offences and take punitive action for the offences. But this - to hold guilty and punish, is not the only use or meaning of this word. This word is also used with the meaning of coming to the right understanding, to correctly analyze or discern the situations, or to correctly assess people and come to right conclusions about them, etc. In John 16:11 the Holy Spirit has placed a contrast between “judgment” and the judgement of the “ruler of this world”, implying that there is a difference in the two ‘judgments’ or in giving the correct decision or in giving the true identification or analysis. God the Holy Spirit, through the Christian Believers, places such examples of absolutely correct, just, impartial, and appropriate behavior and decisions before the people of this world, which will expose the unjust, inappropriate, incomplete, and wrong judgments made under the influence of the “ruler of this world”, by the people of this world, and thereby convict them. 

The judgment of the one and only true and living Lord God is always honest, correct, and impartial. Consider two representative examples form God’s Word the Bible about this fact, one from the Old Testament and the other from the New Testament:

King Jehoshaphat, who lived and ruled in the fear of God, he placed judges over his people: “Then he set judges in the land throughout all the fortified cities of Judah, city by city, and said to the judges, "Take heed to what you are doing, for you do not judge for man but for the Lord, who is with you in the judgment. Now therefore, let the fear of the Lord be upon you; take care and do it, for there is no iniquity with the Lord our God, no partiality, nor taking of bribes."” (2 Chronicles 19:5-7).

The Lord Jesus, admonishing the religious leaders for their behavior and “judgments”, said to these “religious” and “pious” elders of the community, about Himself “I can of Myself do nothing. As I hear, I judge; and My judgment is righteous, because I do not seek My own will but the will of the Father who sent Me” (John 5:30), and their standards of judgement, “Do not judge according to appearance, but judge with righteous judgment” (John 7:24).

The conclusion is that the change that comes into the life, thinking, mentality, and behavior, of a person after coming into the Christian Faith, that guides him under the Holy Spirit to judge honestly, justly, impartially, and correctly, after properly evaluating and correctly discerning the facts. This changed behavior is a proof of the presence of the Holy Spirit in him. Moreover, his this behavior presents a contrast to the people living in sin, sinful desires and tendencies, and working under the influence and control of the “ruler of this world”, and convicts them for their unjust judgments, and inappropriate behavior of being unfair, and showing partiality.

If you are a Christian Believer, then in the face of John 16:10, what is your life like? If you find yourself guilty before this verse, then according to 2 Corinthians 13:5, you need to review your life and reaffirm whether you really are in the Christian Faith or not? If you are a Christian Believer, then the Holy Spirit of God residing within you, will never permit you to judge unjustly, as the people of the world do. Whenever you do it, He will create an uneasiness, a turmoil in your life, which will remain till you have set things right. But if you persist in your stubbornness, which is never the right thing for a Christian Believer to do, then for correction you may have to pass through chastisement also (Hebrews 12:5-11).

If you are still thinking of yourself as being a Christian, because of being born in a particular family and having fulfilled the religious rites and rituals prescribed under your religion or denomination since your childhood, then you too need to come out of your misunderstanding of Biblical facts and start understanding and living according to what the Word of God says, instead of what any denominational creed says or teaches. Make the necessary corrections in your life now while you have the time and opportunity; lest by the time you realize your mistake, it is too late to do anything about it.

If you are still not Born Again, have not obtained salvation, or have not asked the Lord Jesus for forgiveness for your sins, then you have the opportunity to do so right now. A short prayer said voluntarily with a sincere heart, with heartfelt repentance for your sins, and a fully submissive attitude, “Lord Jesus, I confess that I have disobeyed You, and have knowingly or unknowingly, in mind, in thought, in attitude, and in deeds, committed sins. I believe that you have fully borne the punishment of my sins by your sacrifice on the cross, and have paid the full price of those sins for all eternity. Please forgive my sins, change my heart and mind towards you, and make me your disciple, take me with you." God longs for your company and wants to see you blessed, but to make this possible, is your personal decision. Will you not say this prayer now, while you have the time and opportunity to do so - the decision is yours.

पिछले लेखों में हमने देखा है कि मसीही सेवकाई में, परमेश्वर पवित्र आत्मा अपने कार्य और सामर्थ्य को प्रभु यीशु के शिष्यों, अर्थात मसीही विश्वासियों में होकर करता है, और उनमें होकर संसार के लोगों के समक्ष मसीही जीवन के उदाहरण तथा वचन की शिक्षाओं को प्रत्यक्ष करता है। इस प्रकार से परमेश्वर पवित्र आत्मा, संसार के समक्ष, मसीही विश्वासी यानि कि प्रभु यीशु के शिष्य बनने वालों के जीवनों, मनोदशा, और विचारधारा में आए परिवर्तन का प्रत्यक्ष एवं व्यावहारिक प्रमाण प्रदान करता है। साथ ही यह प्रत्यक्ष एवं व्यावहारिक प्रमाण औरों को भी प्रोत्साहित करता है कि जैसा औरों के जीवन में हुआ है, वैसे ही मेरे भी जीवन में भी इसी प्रकार का परिवर्तन और परमेश्वर के लिए उपयोगिता संभव है। यूहन्ना 16:8 में पवित्र आत्मा ने तीन बातें लिखवाई हैं, जिनके विषय वह प्रभु यीशु के शिष्यों में होकर संसार को दोषी ठहराता है। ये तीन बातें हैं - पाप, धार्मिकता, और न्याय। और फिर पद 9, 10, और 11 में इन तीनों के विषय टिप्पणी दी है। इनमें से पहली बात, पाप के विषय कायल करना को हम यूहन्ना 16:9 से पिछले लेख में देख चुके हैं। आज हम दूसरी बात, धार्मिकता के बारे में कायल करने के बारे में हम यूहन्ना 16:10 “और धामिर्कता के विषय में इसलिये कि मैं पिता के पास जाता हूं” से कुछ शिक्षाएं लेंगे।

मूल यूनानी भाषा के लेख में जिस शब्द का प्रयोग किया गया है, जिसे यहाँ ‘धार्मिकता’ अनुवाद किया गया है, उसका अर्थ होता है चरित्र एवं व्यवहार में दोष रहित होना। अर्थात, यहाँ पर प्रभु यीशु द्वारा प्रयुक्त शब्द “धार्मिकता” का अर्थ धार्मिक बातों, प्रथाओं, और रीति-रिवाजों का निर्वाह तथा धार्मिक अनुष्ठानों की पूर्ति के आधार पर व्यक्ति का ‘धर्मी’ समझा जाना नहीं है। यह एक बहुत आम बात है, जिससे सभी भली-भांति अवगत हैं, कि बाहरी रीति से सब कुछ करने के बावजूद, सामान्यतः व्यक्ति अंदर से और व्यवहार से फिर भी पापमय लालसाएँ और गुप्त में पापमय व्यवहार रखते हैं। उनकी यह बाहरी ‘धार्मिकता’ एक दिखावा है, उनके मन अभी भी पाप के विचार और व्यवहार के दोषी हैं। बाइबल के अनुसार इसीलिए मसीही विश्वास की शिक्षा धर्म परिवर्तन की नहीं, बल्कि मन परिवर्तन करने की है। यह मन परिवर्तन मनुष्य अपने किसी धर्म के कामों से नहीं करने पाता है, नहीं तो संसार भर में इतने धर्मों और धार्मिक अनुष्ठानों, और कार्यों के द्वारा, अब तक संसार से पाप की समस्या कब की मिट चुकी होती। यह मन परिवर्तन केवल प्रभु यीशु मसीह में लाए गए विश्वास और पापों के पश्चाताप के द्वारा ही संभव है।

बाइबल यह भी सिखाती है कि मन की इस पवित्रता के बिना, जब कोई भी प्रभु को देख भी नहीं सकता है “सब से मेल मिलाप रखने, और उस पवित्रता के खोजी हो जिस के बिना कोई प्रभु को कदापि न देखेगा” (इब्रानियों 12:14), तो फिर उसके साथ संगति और निवास कैसे करेगा? किन्तु प्रभु यीशु मसीह पर विश्वास लाने के द्वारा, प्रभु यीशु मसीह के द्वारा समस्त मानव जाति के उद्धार के लिए क्रूस पर बहाए गए लहू के द्वारा मनुष्य परमेश्वर की दृष्टि में धर्मी ठहरता है, उसका मेल-मिलाप परमेश्वर के साथ हो जाता है, और वह पाप के दण्ड से बच जाता है : “सो जब हम विश्वास से धर्मी ठहरे, तो अपने प्रभु यीशु मसीह के द्वारा परमेश्वर के साथ मेल रखें” (रोमियों 5:1); “सो जब कि हम, अब उसके लहू के कारण धर्मी ठहरे, तो उसके द्वारा क्रोध से क्यों न बचेंगे? क्योंकि बैरी होने की दशा में तो उसके पुत्र की मृत्यु के द्वारा हमारा मेल परमेश्वर के साथ हुआ फिर मेल हो जाने पर उसके जीवन के कारण हम उद्धार क्यों न पाएंगे?” (रोमियों 5:9-10)। 

प्रभु यीशु मसीह पर विश्वास लाना, और ईसाई धर्म का निर्वाह करना, दो बिलकुल भिन्न बातें हैं; और ईसाई धर्म का निर्वाह व्यक्ति को परमेश्वर की दृष्टि में धर्मी नहीं बनाता है। व्यक्ति किसी भी धर्म को माने, किसी भी परिवार में जन्म ले, सभी के लिए परमेश्वर की आज्ञा पापों से पश्चाताप करने की है “इसलिये परमेश्वर अज्ञानता के समयों में आनाकानी कर के, अब हर जगह सब मनुष्यों को मन फिराने की आज्ञा देता है। क्योंकि उसने एक दिन ठहराया है, जिस में वह उस मनुष्य के द्वारा धर्म से जगत का न्याय करेगा, जिसे उसने ठहराया है और उसे मरे हुओं में से जिलाकर, यह बात सब पर प्रमाणित कर दी है” (प्रेरितों 17:30-31)। प्रेरितों 2 अध्याय में, पतरस का पहला प्रचार यरूशलेम में धार्मिक रीतियों और अनुष्ठानों को निभाने आए हुए “भक्त यहूदियों” के मध्य किया गया था (प्रेरितों 2:5)। पतरस द्वारा उन “भक्त यहूदियों” को किए गए प्रचार को सुनकर “तब सुनने वालों के हृदय छिद गए, और वे पतरस और शेष प्रेरितों से पूछने लगे, कि हे भाइयो, हम क्या करें? पतरस ने उन से कहा, मन फिराओ, और तुम में से हर एक अपने अपने पापों की क्षमा के लिये यीशु मसीह के नाम से बपतिस्मा ले; तो तुम पवित्र आत्मा का दान पाओगे” (प्रेरितों 2:37-38)। जैसे तब उन “भक्त यहूदियों” के लिए धार्मिकता और व्यवस्था के निर्वाह के बावजूद पश्चाताप और समर्पण अनिवार्य था, उसी प्रकार से उद्धार पाने और परमेश्वर को स्वीकार्य होने के लिए आज ईसाई धर्म का निर्वाह करने वालों के लिए भी उतना ही अनिवार्य है। 

प्रभु यीशु मसीह पर विश्वास लाने के द्वारा धर्मी ठहरने, परमेश्वर से मेल-मिलाप हो जाने, पाप के दण्ड से बच जाने की इस पूरी प्रक्रिया को समझने; तथा परमेश्वर की दृष्टि में पाप क्या है, और पाप और उसके निवारण तथा समाधान किस प्रकार संभव है, आदि के विषयों पर बाइबल में दी गई शिक्षाओं पर एक विस्तृत चर्चा पहले प्रस्तुत की जा चुकी है। इस विस्तृत चर्चा की शृंखला का आरंभ “पाप और उद्धार” पर लेख के साथ हुआ था; और जिन पाठकों ने इसे नहीं देखा है, वे इस लेख के लिंक से उसे देख सकते हैं, अध्ययन कर सकते हैं।

प्रभु यीशु मसीह द्वारा सभी मनुष्यों के पापों के लिए कलवरी के क्रूस पर दिए गए बलिदान को स्वीकार करने, अपने पापों से पश्चाताप करने, और अपने पापों के लिए प्रभु से क्षमा मांगने से ही व्यक्ति परमेश्वर की दृष्टि में धर्मी ठहरता है; क्योंकि वह अपने इस विश्वास में आने के द्वारा प्रभु यीशु मसीह को “पहन” लेता है “और तुम में से जितनों ने मसीह में बपतिस्मा लिया है उन्होंने मसीह को पहिन लिया है” (गलातियों 3:27)। इसलिए अब मसीह यीशु में उस व्यक्ति के सभी पाप ढाँप दिए गए हैं, और मसीह यीशु में होकर वह मसीह यीशु की धार्मिकता के कारण धर्मी है। प्रभु यीशु ने यूहन्ना 16:10 में कहा कि वह अब सभी मनुष्यों के उद्धार के लिए अपना कार्य पूरा करके पिता के पास जाता है। जैसे प्रभु यीशु मसीह अपनी धर्मी दशा में परमेश्वर के पास जा सकता था, उसी प्रकार, जो विश्वास में आने के द्वारा प्रभु यीशु मसीह में धर्मी ठहराए गए हैं, वे भी परमेश्वर के पास जा सकते हैं। किन्तु यह आदर संसार के उन लोगों को उपलब्ध नहीं है जो अभी भी अपनी “धर्म-कर्म-रस्म” के निर्वाह की धार्मिकता के आधार पर परमेश्वर के पास आना चाहते हैं। जैसे ऊपर कहा गया, प्रभु यीशु मसीह से मिली इस पवित्रता के बिना तो वे परमेश्वर को देख भी नहीं सकते हैं, उसके पास जाएंगे कैसे?

सच्चे और वास्तविक मसीही विश्वासी के जीवन जीने वालों में, और संसार के मानकों के अनुसार “धार्मिकता” का जीवन जीने वालों में परमेश्वर पवित्र आत्मा “धार्मिकता” की यह तुलना प्रस्तुत करता है। मसीही विश्वास की धार्मिकता की तुलना में, सांसारिक धार्मिकता के विषय सांसारिक लोगों को दोषी ठहराता है। यदि आप मसीही विश्वासी हैं, तो आपकी “धार्मिकता” का आधार क्या है - आपका पापों से पश्चाताप, मसीह यीशु में लाया गया विश्वास, मसीह यीशु को पूर्णतः समर्पित और उसके वचन की आज्ञाकारिता का जीवन; या, किसी परिवार विशेष में जन्म तथा “धर्म-कर्म-रस्म” के निर्वाह की धार्मिकता? आपके मसीही विश्वास की वास्तविकता, और आप में परमेश्वर पवित्र आत्मा की उपस्थिति की पुष्टि आपकी मसीही सेवकाई के द्वारा होती है। यदि आपकी धार्मिकता, मसीही विश्वास की धार्मिकता है, तो फिर आप में होकर पवित्र आत्मा संसार के लोगों को उनकी सांसारिक धार्मिकता के विषय कायल करेगा, उन्हें उसकी अपूर्णता का एहसास करवाएगा।

Holy Spirit Convicts of Righteousness - John 16:10

In the previous articles we have seen that in the Christian Ministry, the Holy Spirit demonstrates His power and His works through the disciples of the Lord Jesus, i.e., the Christian Believers, through them He places before the world the examples of Christian living and the teachings of God’s Word. In this way God the Holy Spirit puts forth for the world an evident proof of the change that comes in the life, thinking, and mentality of a Christian Believer, i.e., the one who decides to become a disciple of the Lord Jesus Christ. This evident and practical proof also encourages others to ponder, that what has been done in a person’s life can also be done in their life and make them acceptable and useful for God. In John 16:8 the Holy Spirit has had three things written that He convicts the world for, through the lives of the disciples of the Lord Jesus. These three are - sin, righteousness, and judgment; and then in verse 9, 10, and 11, comments are added for each of these three. Of these three, we have seen the first one, sin, from John 16:9 in the previous article. Today we will look at and learn from the second thing, righteousness, from John 16:10 “of righteousness, because I go to My Father and you see Me no more” today.

The word translated as “righteousness” here, in the original Greek language means to be blameless in character and behavior. In other words, here the word “righteousness” was not used by the Lord Jesus for religious things, religious rites, rituals, and traditions, for fulfilling of religious obligations and ceremonies, or for a person to be considered “righteous” on their basis. This is a very common thing, something about which generally everybody is well aware that despite doing everything very well externally, a person usually continues to harbor sinful desires internally and often gets involved in sinful behavior covertly. Their such “external” righteousness is a mere façade, their hearts and minds are still guilty of sinful thoughts, desires and behavior. Therefore, Biblically, the teaching of Christian Faith is not for any religious conversions, but for a conversion of the heart and mind. That this conversion of the heart and mind cannot happen through any religious works is evident from the fact that despite so many different religions and religious works, observances and ceremonies all over the world, the problem of sin and righteousness has only continued to worsen, instead of getting solved and eliminated. This change of heart and mind is only brought about by personally coming to faith in the Lord Jesus and repenting of sins.

The Bible also teaches that without this holiness of the heart and mind, one cannot even see the Lord, “Pursue peace with all people, and holiness, without which no one will see the Lord” (Hebrews 12:14); then how would it at all be possible to fellowship and live with the Lord? But by coming into faith in the Lord Jesus, by accepting and believing that the Lord Jesus, through His sacrifice and shedding His blood on the Cross of Calvary, has made available the way for mankind to be saved from sins, become righteous in the eyes of God, be reconciled with God and be delivered from the penalty of his sins for eternity: “Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ” (Romans 5:1); “Much more then, having now been justified by His blood, we shall be saved from wrath through Him. For if when we were enemies we were reconciled to God through the death of His Son, much more, having been reconciled, we shall be saved by His life” (Romans 5:9-10).

To come to faith in the Lord Jesus and to live according to the Christian religion, are two entirely different things altogether; and living according to the Christian religion does not make anyone righteous in God’s eyes. A person may believe in any religion, and may have been born in any family, God’s command for each and every one, irrespective of their religion or background is to repent of their sins and prepare themselves for the coming judgment, “Truly, these times of ignorance God overlooked, but now commands all men everywhere to repent, because He has appointed a day on which He will judge the world in righteousness by the Man whom He has ordained. He has given assurance of this to all by raising Him from the dead” (Acts 17:30-31). The first preaching of the gospel message by Peter, in Acts chapter 2, was to the “devout Jews” (Acts 2:5) who had gathered in Jerusalem from all the places of the world to fulfill religious requirements and ceremonies. These devout Jews, on hearing Peter’s message given through the power of the Holy Spirit, were moved to cry out and ask how to be saved, and then Peter tells them about how they can be saved, “Now when they heard this, they were cut to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, "Men and brethren, what shall we do?" Then Peter said to them, "Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit” (Acts 2:37-38). Just as at that time repentance and surrender was mandatory for those devout Jews, despite their fulfilling their religious rituals and the Law, similarly, today, for the followers of the Christian religion, repentance and surrender to the Lord Jesus is just as essential to be saved and made acceptable to God.

A detailed presentation regarding the Biblical teachings on topics like what is sin; the remedy for sin and deliverance from it; understanding how to be saved from the consequences of sin, be reconciled with God; and becoming righteous in the eyes of God through coming into faith in the Lord Jesus, etc. has already been made earlier. A person can only become righteous in God’s eyes by personally accepting the sacrifice made by the Lord Jesus on the Cross of Calvary, repenting of their sins, and asking forgiveness from the Lord Jesus for them, because when the person does this, when he comes into faith in Christ Jesus he “puts on” the Lord Jesus Christ, “For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ” (Galatians 3:27). So, now all his sins are covered by the Lord Jesus, and by virtue of being in Christ, he now is righteous, by the imputed righteousness of Christ Jesus. The Lord Jesus said in John 16:10 that after completing the work of salvation for everyone, He is now going to the Father. Just as the Lord Jesus could now go to the Father being righteous, similarly those who have been made righteous by coming into Christ, they too can now come to the God the Father. But this honor is not available to those who still want to approach God through their contrived righteousness, based upon their religion, religious observances and works. As has been stated above, without the holiness received from the Lord Jesus, they cannot even see God, then how can they approach Him and be with Him?

The Holy Spirit presents this contrast in the lives of those who live a life of a truly Born-Again Christian Believer and those who live a life of righteousness according to their own contrived worldly methods and standards of righteousness. Thereby the Holy Spirit convicts those who believe in the righteousness by worldly methods and standards, by placing before them the righteousness of the Christian Faith. If you consider yourself to be a Christian Believer, then what is the basis of your righteousness? Is it your having repented of your sins, asked the Lord Jesus’s forgiveness for them, accepted the Lord’s sacrifice on the Cross of Calvary and come into faith in Him, surrendering your life into the hands of Christ Jesus to live in obedience to Him and His Word; or; is it based upon your being born in a particular family and lived according to the rites, rituals, and ceremonies of a particular religion? If your righteousness is the righteousness of the Christian Faith, then the Holy Spirit will convict the world about their worldly righteousness, and make them aware of their deficiencies, through you. The proof of your being in the Christian Faith, and the Holy Spirit residing in you is through your Christian ministry.

If you are still thinking of yourself as being a Christian, because of being born in a particular family and having fulfilled the religious rites and rituals prescribed under your religion or denomination since your childhood, then you too need to come out of your misunderstanding of Biblical facts and start understanding and living according to what the Word of God says, instead of what any denominational creed says or teaches. Make the necessary corrections in your life now while you have the time and opportunity; lest by the time you realize your mistake, it is too late to do anything about it.

If you are still not Born Again, have not obtained salvation, or have not asked the Lord Jesus for forgiveness for your sins, then you have the opportunity to do so right now. A short prayer said voluntarily with a sincere heart, with heartfelt repentance for your sins, and a fully submissive attitude, “Lord Jesus, I confess that I have disobeyed You, and have knowingly or unknowingly, in mind, in thought, in attitude, and in deeds, committed sins. I believe that you have fully borne the punishment of my sins by your sacrifice on the cross, and have paid the full price of those sins for all eternity. Please forgive my sins, change my heart and mind towards you, and make me your disciple, take me with you." God longs for your company and wants to see you blessed, but to make this possible, is your personal decision. Will you not say this prayer now, while you have the time and opportunity to do so - the decision is yours.
