Teachings Related to the Gospel – 15

In the previous article we have seen that at the time of the earthly ministry of the Lord Jesus, the Jews were anticipating the arrival of the promised Messiah, i.e., the deliverer. But they were waiting for a deliverer who would deliver them from the Romans ruling over them, and restore their kingdom to them – to them that was all that the gospel, or the good news meant. They did not consider themselves to be under the bondage of sin; to them, fulfilling the religious laws and rituals was sufficient to qualify them to enter the heavenly Kingdom of God – so that was no problem. Their problem was the Romans ruling over them; and that is what they wanted to be delivered from. Even though the Lord’s forerunner, John the Baptist, had come and was preparing the people for the ministry of the Lord Jesus. For this he was preaching to them to repent from sins; baptizing those who repented, and refusing to baptize those who wanted to get it done as a mere ritual (Matthew 3:1-12). Yet, from the point-of-view of the Jews amongst whom he was ministering, deliverance from the bondage of sins was the least of their problems, their sinful state did not bother them at all.

When the Rich Young Ruler came to the Lord, he well knew that despite having obeyed the Commandments from his youth, he lacked something, and was unworthy of entering the Kingdom of God (Matthew 19:16-22). The leader of the Pharisees, Nicodemus, too came to the Lord with his doubts, and even before he could speak out that which was bothering him, the Lord gave him the answer – he must be Born-Again, otherwise let alone enter, he would not even see the Kingdom of God (John 3:3, 5, 7). In other words, despite his being a high-ranking religious leader and teacher, he knew within himself that all his religiosity and fulfilling the Law and the rituals had still not made him acceptable to God, to enter His Kingdom; he still lacked something.

Throughout the Gospel accounts we repeatedly find the Lord castigating the religious leaders of His time – the Pharisees, the Sadducees, the Scribes, etc. for their hypocrisy, despite their being religious (Matthew 23). The Lord acknowledged their righteousness, but also called their righteousness as insufficient to enter God’s Kingdom (Matthew 5:20). Similarly, the zealous Pharisee Saul, also known as Paul after his conversion, had something very important to say about his self-professed righteousness based on his religious observances – that on the basis of the righteousness of the Law, he was blameless; but yet, on the basis of the righteousness that comes through faith in the Lord Jesus, his former self-professed righteousness through the observance of the Law was vain (Philippians 3:4-12). We also see that the devout Jews (Acts 2:5) who had gathered in Jerusalem to fulfil the requirements of the Law, on hearing Peter’s sermon on the day of Pentecost were convicted, realizing that their religiosity and their expected righteousness was inconsequential. Therefore, they cried out wanting to know what to do to rectify their situation. Notice that Peter did not ask them to be more religious, more zealous, more committed to obeying the Law; but asked them to repent (Acts 2:37-38).

Even the most religious man, Job, about whose righteousness God spoke of twice (Job 1:1, 8; 2:3), on being confronted by God realised how vile and sinful he actually was, and instead of trying to justify himself, as he had been doing with his friends, he immediately repented before God (Job 40:4-5; 42:5-6). God’s prophet, Isaiah, although he was already engaged in the ministry for the Lord, but when he saw the vision of heaven, God’s throne, and the other things there, he immediately cried out that he was a man of unclean lips worthy to be destroyed (Isaiah 6:5) – he did not try to justify himself through his ministry carried out by him for the Lord till then; he simply acknowledged his actual state and repented. Even Abraham, called the “Friend of God” (2 Chronicles 20:7; Isaiah 41:8; James 2:23), was justified before God not because of his relationship with God or any of his works, but because of his faith. It was his faith that was accounted to him as righteousness (Hebrews 11:8-9; Romans 4:3; Galatians 3:6).

God’s Word is very clear, no one’s religion, or religious works of any kind, or any righteousness claimed on the basis of religion and their religious works and observances, have ever qualified them to be right with God, and be considered good enough to enter God’s Kingdom. All such righteousness is like filthy rags in the eyes of God, unacceptable to Him and vain (Isaiah 64:6). This was so then for the Jews then, and now also for Christianity and the Christians. If it had been possible to be good enough to enter the Kingdom of God through religion and works, then there was no need for the Lord Jesus to have come down to earth, be humiliated by sinful men, be crucified as a criminal, and suffer death.

All God needed to do was send another prophet, clarify things from God’s point-of-view a bit better and some more, and let men work for their salvation. But instead of this, as the Lord Jesus said to Nicodemus then, and is applicable for us today, each and every one has to be Born-Again to be able to enter the Kingdom of God; this is applicable to all men, everywhere; irrespective of their religion and works (Acts 17:30-31). God’s Word is very clear and unambiguous, no one is ever born a “Christian;” everyone must be Born-Again to be a “Christian.”

In the next article we will see why people could not be justified before God through the observance of the Law; and after that we will see why, from God’s point-of-view, as is given in His Word, no one can be called a “Christian” by virtue of being born in a particular family, under a particular religion, and fulfilling of certain rites and rituals.

If you have not yet accepted the discipleship of the Lord, make your decision in favor of the Lord Jesus now to ensure your eternal life and heavenly blessings. Where there is obedience to the Lord, where there is respect and obedience to His Word, there is also the blessing and protection of the Lord. Voluntarily repent of your sins and ask the Lord Jesus for forgiveness of your sins, voluntarily and sincerely surrender yourself to Him - this the only way to salvation and heavenly life. You only have to say a short but sincere prayer to the Lord Jesus Christ willingly and with a penitent heart, and at the same time completely commit and submit your life to Him. You can also make this prayer and submission in words something like, “Lord Jesus, I am sorry for my sins and repent of them. I thank you for taking my sins upon yourself, paying for them through your life.  Because of them you died on the cross in my place, were buried, and you rose again from the grave on the third day for my salvation, and today you are the living Lord God and have freely provided to me the forgiveness, and redemption from my sins, through faith in you. Please forgive my sins, take me under your care, and make me your disciple. I submit my life into your hands." Your one prayer from a sincere and committed heart will make your present and future life, in this world and in the hereafter, heavenly and blessed for eternity.

Law’s Purpose - 2

We had seen in the previous article that a purpose of the Law is to make man aware of his inabilities and incapabilities; and to get him to realize that through his own works, he can never attain to the standard of righteousness acceptable to God, and that he can never become righteous in God’s eyes by his works (Isaiah 64:6; Job 15:14-16; Job 25:4). The second purpose of the Law, as we saw in the previous article in the context of the fourth limitation of the Law given in Romans 7:7-13, is to identify sin. It is essential we understand that the law is not given for the solution or remission of sins, but for the recognition of sins, and to remind man of his sinful condition, “Has then what is good become death to me? Certainly not! But sin, that it might appear sin, was producing death in me through what is good, so that sin through the commandment might become exceedingly sinful.” (Romans 7:13). Even before this, in Romans itself, God, the Holy Spirit, through Paul, has made the point evident and clear, where it is written, "20. Therefore by the deeds of the law no flesh will be justified in His sight, for by the law is the knowledge of sin. 21. But now the righteousness of God apart from the law is revealed, being witnessed by the Law and the Prophets, 22. even the righteousness of God, through faith in Jesus Christ, to all and on all who believe. For there is no difference;” (Romans 3:20-22).

Consider these three verses a little carefully:

  • In verse 20, the Holy Spirit had it written that keeping the Law will not justify any living being. Because the purpose of the Law is not to justify, but to provide the knowledge of sin. The Law puts before man God’s criteria to be righteous, and the standards of God’s righteousness. Thereby, man, by comparing anything with them, can know what is acceptable to God, and what is not; what is right in God’s view and what is not; whom God believes to be right and just, whom not. To understand it, look at it like this: the doctor diagnoses the disease by the help of blood tests, X-rays, and other such tests, and then tells the solution, the treatment of that disease. The tests being asked by him are not the cure of the disease, they are not the treatment of the disease; but only the way to diagnose the disease. In the same way God's Law is also a way of revealing man's sin-sickness to him, making him recognize its presence in him, and showing the futility of his own efforts to cure that disease. The Law is not the cure or solution to the disease of sin.

  • In verse 21 the Holy Spirit explains that the righteousness of God is apart from the Law, not by the Law. This righteousness of God is revealed, outside the Law; And the Law and the prophets themselves testify to this righteousness. This righteousness of God is not through the works of man, but it is the Lord Jesus Christ Himself (Romans 1:17; Jeremiah 23:5-6; 33:16).

  • Verse 22 makes it quite clear that this righteousness of God, which is apart from the Law, can never be earned in any way, nor is it inherited by anyone; but is graciously given as a gift by God, but only to those who believe in the Lord; It is only for them.

Also, for those who still want to justify themselves in the sight of God through the observance of the Law, the Law has an associated great demand too, which no man has ever been able to fulfill. We will consider this demand of the Law in the next article. But for now, if you consider yourself to be righteous by observing any kind of “law” — whether of God, or of your religion, creed, community, or denomination — and are trying to make yourself acceptable to God through your works; then pay heed and understand that God's Word clearly states that you can become righteous and acceptable to God, not by keeping the Law, but only by following God's prescribed path of repentance and submission. Therefore, while you have the time and opportunity, make the right decision now, and leave the useless and fruitless path.

If you have not yet accepted the discipleship of the Lord, make your decision in favor of the Lord Jesus now to ensure your eternal life and heavenly blessings. Where there is obedience to the Lord, where there is respect and obedience to His Word, there is also the blessing and protection of the Lord. Repenting of your sins, and asking the Lord Jesus for forgiveness of your sins, voluntarily and sincerely, surrendering yourself to Him - is the only way to salvation and heavenly life.

Man’s Ignorance - 1

In previous articles, while analyzing why God, in Acts 17:30, considers the sinful behavior of man as “things done in times of ignorance", thereby giving the disobedient and sinful mankind an opportunity to avoid punishment, we have seen and understood that humans in their creation, are created weaker and lower than Satan and his angels. Therefore, they are unable by any means to face and overcome the satanic forces; unless they face them under the submission, obedience and guidance of the Lord God - and only then can man overcome Satan and his devious devices, and his deceptions; never otherwise.

For us, in our day-to-day practical life this means that Satan, who has been a liar from the beginning, and the father of lies (John 8:44), tricks, deceives, and misguides man through his lies, deceits, devious ploys, etc., making him do inappropriate and wrong things, knowingly or unknowingly. Quite often Satan and his demons present themselves as false apostles, false ministers of Christ, and even as an angel of light (2 Corinthians 11:13-15). In these appearances, they deceive men by making them believe that through doing works of self-righteousness, and self-decided good works, etc., they can be good in the eyes of God, and acceptable to Him. Their modus operandi is to keep people’s minds blinded (2 Corinthians 4:4-6), and keep their eyes turned away from the Lord Jesus, His works and sacrifice on the Cross for the salvation of all of mankind, and from the forgiveness of sins and salvation freely made available to everyone who comes to faith in Him. And man, because his mind has been blinded by the satanic forces, does not even realize that he has been trapped by Satan’s deviousness; and the deceived man, inadvertently or unknowingly, keeps on living and behaving vainly, wrongly, and sinfully. Man is so caught up in Satan’s devious deceptions that he does not even realize how he actually is actively engaged in harming himself by becoming a toy in the hands of Satan. He has no idea that while he thinks and believes himself to be righteous, moral, and good, because of his contrived piety, and living out his self-devised righteousness, but actually he has been beguiled by Satan to turn away from God, His Word, and from God’s ways. In this state of deception, man not only remains convinced of his own vain self-righteousness, but also considers himself to be acceptable and pleasing to God because of it; whereas the reality is quite the opposite. And man, deceived by Satan, continues to move not towards God and heaven, but towards eternal destruction in his unresolved state of sin.

Not only are Satan and his angels stronger than man in every way, but they are also wiser than man. They use their superior intelligence, to fool men, to mislead and deceive them, to get them to live in sinful behavior and a life according to their own likes and desires, in a manner unacceptable to God. Thereby the satanic forces keep people entrapped in their state of sin, without realizing the devious schemes of wickedness that they have been trapped in. At the same time, the satanic forces keep the truth hidden from man, do not allow him to come near to the truth, do not let him to know and understand the truth about salvation. Satan has blinded the minds of men, so that the light of the gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ does not shine upon them (2 Corinthians 4:4-6). The earthly, unregenerate man, who seeks to know and learn the Word of God with his own wisdom, knowledge, and ability, has a veil over his heart regarding the Word of God, which makes him incapable of understanding the truth of God’s Word. This veil is raised and taken away only when one turns to the Lord, when one repents and lives a life submitted to the Lord (2 Corinthians 3:14–16), and begins to be taught by the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 2:10–15).

What does this have to do with Acts 17:30, with God considering man's sins to be acts of ignorance, and His being reluctant to punish man about them, and commanding man to repent to avoid punishment? We will see it in the next article. For now, whether you are a Christian or a non-Christian, take a serious look at your life to see if you have obeyed the Lord's command given for everyone to repent of their sins. If you still consider yourself righteous and acceptable to God on the basis of your religion, denomination, the observance of their practices and rituals, then you are in the trap of deceit spread by Satan, and you need to get out of this deception today, now, while you have the time and opportunity. Procrastination, unbelief, or postponing for a later time can bring you great harm.

Why The Law Cannot Save Us – 10

Man, on his own, is Incapable of Overcoming Satan - 8

In the previous few articles, we have been trying to understand from God’s Word the Bible why man, through his own power and abilities, is incapable of facing and overcoming Satan. The things we have learnt so far are:

Every Word of God and everything He says is eternally established in heaven (Psalm 119:89). God, in context of time refers to Himself in the present tense, as 'I Am Who I Am' in the Old as well as the New Testament (Exodus 3:14; John 8:58). Implying that God is not bound by time, He is immutable, never changing, and is always the same (Hebrews 1:12; Hebrews 13:8; Revelation 1:8; Psalm 102:27; Malachi 3:6). He is the omniscient God who knows the end from the beginning, and always knows everything about everything (Isaiah 46:10). What He has says, always happens; He never makes any mistakes, He never needs to revise or change any of His decisions (not His thoughts or intentions, but the decisions He has once taken) as we can see from verse like Numbers 23:19; Isaiah 31:2; Isaiah 46:11; Jeremiah 4:28. Whatever He has given to anyone, He has given thoughtfully—knowing all related possibilities, His intentions, and the things of future—with a specific purpose; there is nothing that is unforeseen for Him and neither is He ever taken by surprise. Therefore, the abilities, authority, and gifts given by God are irrevocable; He never takes them back (Romans 11:29; Psalm 89:34).

Man, in his natural created condition, is less powerful than the angels (Psalm 103:20; 2 Thessalonians 1:7; 2 Peter 2:11); and lower than the angels in the hierarchy of created beings (Hebrews 2:6-10). After salvation, the saved person becomes a child of God (John 1:12-13), and while on earth he is continually being transformed, bit by bit, into the likeness of the Lord Jesus by the Holy Spirit (2 Corinthians 3:18), eventually to be an heir of God, and a co-heir with Christ (Romans 8:17). Therefore, the saved person’s status is also elevated to a status higher than that of the angels, who then become his ministering spirits (Hebrews 1:14).

Also, at the moment of salvation, the body of the saved person becomes the Temple of the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 3:16; 6:19), and He starts residing in them as their helper and teacher (John14:16, 26; Ephesians 1:13-14). But those who try to learn, understand, and follow God's Word through their own human abilities, intellect, and wisdom, are actually unable to do so, since God’s Word is only learnt through the Holy Spirit (John14:26; 1 Corinthians 2:10–15). Moreover, there is a veil over the hearts of unsaved, unregenerate people. This veil is only removed when a person turns to the Lord in repentance (2 Corinthians 3:14–16), and, as a child of God, is taught by the Holy Spirit.

In context of what we have seen above, let us consider some Biblical facts about Satan and his demons, and their modus operandi.

Satan was originally created as the chief archangel, Lucifer, and he was the most powerful and wise being created, second only to God (Isaiah 14:12-15; Ezekiel 28:12-17). This created pride in him, and he wanted to exalt himself above God. Due to this fall in sin, he and his angelic followers were cast out of Heaven, became Satan and his demons. Consistent with the principle of God’s gifts being irrevocable, even their fall and expulsion from heaven, their powers, the great wisdom, and even the privilege of conversing with God (Job 1:6-7, 12; 2:1-6) were not taken away from Satan and his demons.

They now use this power to work against God's people and purposes, to perform great miraculous signs (2 Thessalonians 2:9-10; Revelation 13:13-15) through which they deceive the world, often presenting themselves as false apostles, ministers of Christ, and an angel of light (2 Corinthians 11:3,13-15). Satan, the "father of lies" (John 8:44), exploits this situation, to trap people into vain works, by making them believe in their self-righteousness through works. The satanic forces keep people caught up in the devious deception that they can be good, moral, righteous, and acceptable to God through their religion, religious works, goodness, and other such works. Thereby, Satan effectively blinds people’s minds so that the light of the Gospel cannot shine upon them (2 Corinthians 4:4-6).
In the next article, we'll look at some other related things, and then consider their practical application and implications.
