Discipline in the Church – 1

As stewards of God’s Church and of fellowshipping with other Believers, all Believers have to conduct themselves and help others in a manner that contributes to the edification of the Church as well as helps others to grow spiritually. In the previous articles we have seen various aspects of fulfilling this responsibility, and the role of a proper ministry of God’s Word. The Believers should never forget that the Church of God is made up of human beings, and no person is ever perfect. All, even the spiritually mature, the Elders, the Preachers and Teachers of God’s Word, everyone, whoever he may be, does make mistakes at some time or the other, and we all need corrections for our mistakes, from time to time. God knows this, and is patient and longsuffering about it; He has made provisions in His Church and amongst His Believers for His children to be made aware of their mistakes, and of being told how to correct them. But those who do not take this correction in the right way, will then eventually have to bear the consequences of their being stubborn or egoistic about it.

Therefore, no one in God’s church should live and function with the misconception that they are perfect and do not make any mistakes (1 Corinthians 10:12); or that no one has the right to point out anything wrong in them and thereby hurt their feelings or lower their status in the Church (2 Timothy 4:2). Nor should they think that if there is anything wrong in them, then God will tell them about it directly - as we will see below from 2 Samuel chapter 12, God sent His prophet Nathan to tell David of his sin; and similarly in God’s Word, God has told people their mistakes and sins through His prophets on numerous occasions. Another form of this misunderstanding is that some Believers think that since a particular Elder or Believer has not objected or said anything about something in their lives, therefore, no one else has the ability, right, or authority to point it out as a mistake or wrong either – how God uses one Elder or Believer, or another, is God’s discretion. God can point out one thing through one person, and another thing through another; and He can use different people for exposing different things in the same Believer’s life. We can neither direct God about this, nor make our own assumptions about God’s way of functioning - mistakes and sins are mistakes and sins, irrespective of who points them out.

We see from God’s Word that it is God’s method of working that He uses His ministers to speak to and point out the errors and their consequences to the people of the world, not only to the Gentiles, e.g. Jonah and Nahum spoke to the people of Nineveh, and Obadiah spoke to Edomites; but He also does the same with His own people. The prophets of the Old Testament did just that to the Israelites – spoke to them, even to Kings and dignitaries, usually publicly and boldly, and warned them of the coming wrath of God for their disobedience and straying away from God; the writings of the Old Testament prophets are all on this theme. We also see that God even used His prophets to speak on His behalf to not only His people in general, but even to His chosen and appointed ones, instead of speaking directly with those few special ones; e.g., Samuel rebuked King Saul for his disobedience (1 Samuel 13:13-14; 15:17-23). Even though God was using David to write Psalms that would later be included in His Word, and thus, could have spoken to him directly and privately, but God spoke to him about his wrong through Nathan; who not only spoke to King David but also rebuked him for his sin against Uriah and Bathsheba (2 Samuel 12:1-14). Isaiah rebuked King Hezekiah after he had exposed the kingdom to the Babylonians (Isaiah 39); Azariah and eighty other Priests withstood King Uzziah, when he transgressed God’s instructions, and even thrust him out of the Temple (2 Chronicles 26:16-20). All the letters of the New Testament have been written by the men of God, to other Churches and men of God, to point out their short-comings and errors, and to correct them. In these letters to the Churches, which not only were read to the whole Church, but were also circulated to the other surrounding churches (Colossians 4:16; 1 Thessalonians 5:27), names of some people doing wrong have been also been written and thus they became public knowledge.

Every Christian Believer, no matter what his age, spiritual maturity, and commitment to the Lord, whatever may be his quality and quantity of service for the Lord, however well versed he may be in God's Word, whatever may be his position and status in the Church; yet he is still a fallible human being, prone to make mistakes and commit errors, whether knowingly or unknowingly, habitually or occasionally. Therefore, God does use other people to point out our mistakes and the way to correct them, so that no one may consider themselves any more than they should. Rather, it is God’s instruction in His Word, the Bible that the other spiritually mature people of God should correct the errant Believers – Galatians 6:1-2; James 5:19-20; and there is no Biblical instruction that this necessarily must be done privately, the common examples are of pointing out the errors and correcting publicly (Galatians 2:14; 1 Timothy 5:20). The working principle seems to be that if the persons disregard and disobey God, and sin against Him publicly, they should not expect a private response from God - an application of Mark 4:22-24. The reason, as pointed out in 1 Timothy 5:20 is that people fearing a likely public exposure and rebuke for their wrongs, will remain careful to not commit mistakes, or continue in them, and thereby remain safe from satanic ploys.

That is why, knowing and understanding that no man is ever perfect, infallible, and always correct, our role model must always be the Lord Jesus only, and not any man, ever. To live and function in the fear of man is to invite trouble (Proverbs 29:25), even if it is a fear of consideration for that person; i.e., to be more concerned about offending some man, rather than being concerned about offending God, can bring problems in our lives (Psalm 40:4).

If you have not yet accepted the discipleship of the Lord, make your decision in favor of the Lord Jesus now to ensure your eternal life and heavenly blessings. Where there is obedience to the Lord, where there is respect and obedience to His Word, there is also the blessing and protection of the Lord. Voluntarily repent of your sins, and ask the Lord Jesus for forgiveness of your sins; voluntarily and sincerely, surrender yourself to Him - this is the only way to salvation and heavenly life. You only have to say a short but sincere prayer to the Lord Jesus Christ willingly and with a penitent heart, and at the same time completely commit and submit your life to Him. You can also make this prayer and submission in words something like, “Lord Jesus, I am sorry for my sins and repent of them. I thank you for taking my sins upon yourself, paying for them through your life.  Because of them you died on the cross in my place, were buried, and you rose again from the grave on the third day for my salvation, and today you are the living Lord God and have freely provided to me the forgiveness, and redemption from my sins, through faith in you. Please forgive my sins, take me under your care, and make me your disciple. I submit my life into your hands." Your one prayer from a sincere and committed heart will make your present and future life, in this world and in the hereafter, heavenly and blessed for eternity.

Church Stewardship - Role of Elders

In this ongoing series of living a 'Blessed and Successful Life', we have been learning about the provisions and privileges given by God to the truly Born-Again Christian Believers along with their salvation. One of these provisions and privileges is the true Believer being a steward of the Church and of the fellowship with other believers. While looking at the implications of what we have learnt in the previous articles, we have seen how, even though the ministries and responsibilities entrusted to them by God are different, the Believers are neither separate from one another nor from the Church. Rather, they are accountable to those with whom they fellowship, i.e., to the Church as well as to one another. Today we will look at some things related to the role of the Church Elders, that is, regarding the stewardship of the Elders in the Church and among the believers.

God’s Word, the Bible teaches us that the local Churches and their members, are to function under the care of certain Elders that have been given the responsibility of looking after and managing the Church. The appointment, role, function, and authority, etc., of various kinds of Church Elders is a vast subject, and we will not be considering it here. We have seen that God has given responsibilities and assigned works to be done for every Believer (Ephesians 2:10) in His Church. The Believers have been given the Holy Spirit and the gifts of the Holy Spirit to fulfill their responsibilities with the help of and under the guidance of the Holy Spirit. Though these works and responsibilities have to be carried out under the supervision and care of Elders of that local Church, but the Elders should always keep in mind that God is still the owner of His Church. And since they, the Elders have been placed over the members by God, to look after them, therefore, they will have to give an account to God for them (Hebrews 13:17). Moreover, the Elders should keep in mind that the Believers placed under them are not their dumb servants, or slaves. They are not to be treated as those who cannot say anything to the Elder, or ask any questions from the Elders, or show any disagreement with the Elders. The Elders should never forget that even they are mere human-beings, and like other human-beings, they too can make mistakes, can be led astray and deceived by Satan, and under the influence of Satan they too can lead others astray as well as deceive them – knowingly or unknowingly. In God’s Church, God is still the final authority; and amongst His children, things have to be done as per His will, the way He wants them done. God has already given all the necessary instructions in His Word for doing this. Since God will never go contrary to His will that He has already expressed in His Word; therefore, the Elders have to take care of the congregation, just as God has instructed in His Word.

One passage that is of great help in learning about and carrying out this responsibility, by the Elders as well as the congregation in the prescribed manner is 1 Peter 5:1-5. In this passage, Peter exhorts the Elders to function as a shepherd, i.e., patiently, gently, and with perseverance. They must always remember that it is not their own, but God’s flock that they are looking after; so they will have to give an account for them to God. They should not tend God’s flock for dishonest gain, nor try to use it for personal benefit and temporal gains. A good guide for this is Paul’s example in 1 Corinthians chapter 9, where he explains his responsibilities, rights, authority, remuneration and how he functioned as a minister of God.

Peter goes on to say in verse 3 that the Elders should set themselves up as examples to God’s flock, and not behave as lords over them; i.e., they should lead by example not force or coercion, as we see from the life of Paul too. Then, in verse 4, Peter urges the Elders to wait for their “Chief Shepherd” to come and give them their eternal, unfading rewards; once again implying that they should not seek and desire getting temporal worldly gains from God’s flock entrusted to them, nor acquire any such benefits. Then, in verse 5, Peter also instructs the congregation about their responsibility – they should submit themselves to the Elders, as well as to each other, and remain humble in all things, waiting for God to exalt them in due time (verse 6). So, for the benefit of the Church and of the congregation, the Elders and the congregation, both have to work hand-in-hand, helping and supplementing each other. One cannot function properly without the other, both have to fulfill their respective responsibilities.

In Luke 12:45-46, usurping and misusing the authority given by the Master to His servant, is a sign of bad stewardship, and will invite severe retribution (also see Ezekiel chapter 34 in this context).

From the next article we will start considering maintaining discipline in the Church.

Church Stewardship - Practical Implications – 11

All Born-Again Christian Believers, at the moment of their salvation, are made a part of God’s Church and are placed by God in fellowship of His other children. For these, and other privileges given by God at salvation, every Believer is a steward of God and is also accountable to Him for fulfilling his stewardship worthily. As stewards of God’s Church and of the fellowship of His children, the Believers are to be involved in the growth of the Church and spiritual progress of God’s other children. For this, as we have learnt in the past few articles, the role of the ministry of God’s Word is of paramount importance. Those entrusted with the ministry of God’s Word are to serve God’s Word to the Church and God’s children regularly, adequately, and properly – both in quality as well quantity. In the recent articles we have seen some aspects of this ministry. In the last article we saw from Paul’s summary of his ministry in Ephesus that he, under the guidance of the Holy Spirit, had unhesitatingly declared to them the whole counsel of God. Therefore, when he went from Ephesus to Macedonia, he left Timothy behind to ensure that those who preach and teach there, should not teach anything other than what Paul had taught. We saw the salient features of Paul’s ministry in Ephesus, which provide a scriptural guideline for us today to follow, especially for those engaged in the ministry of God’s Word. Today we will consider some more Biblical instructions in context of the Word ministry; instructions that help the Church to grow and the Believers to progress in their spiritual lives.

We have seen some very important aspects of the ministry of God’s Word for the growth and progress of the Church and the Believers from 1 Timothy 1:3-4 in the recent articles. There is another important instruction that must also be taken note of; it is stated later in Paul's first letter to Timothy. In 1 Timothy 4:6, while giving instructions to Timothy through the Holy Spirit, Paul asks him to instruct others about that which has been given i.e., has been taught or instructed to him. Through our study of 1 Timothy 1:3-4 in the previous two articles, we have already seen and understood why Paul is asking Timothy to do this. But here, in 1 Timothy 4:6, we see another benefit, for the preacher, of sincerely preaching and teaching God’s pure Word in its truth and entirety, under the guidance of the Holy Spirit.

It is written here that by doing this “you will be a good minister of Jesus Christ, nourished in the words of faith and of the good doctrine which you have carefully followed.” In other words, Paul is pointing out to Timothy that when he faithfully instructs others about God’s pure Word, and he himself also takes care to carefully continue to follow the ‘good doctrine’ that he is preaching and teaching to others, it will contribute to his own spiritual growth and stability. So, here we have a two-fold benefit of being “a good minister of Jesus Christ” i.e., sincerely and honestly ministering God’s Word, instead of being a minister of man’s word, instead of ministering fables and genealogies contrived by man. These two benefits are, firstly it will cause the growth and progress of the Church and the Believers; and secondly, it will cause such a preacher and teacher to himself be “nourished in the words of faith and of the good doctrine” which he shares and also carefully follows. The lesson is, for the Believer’s own spiritual growth, they should sincerely and honestly teach others the true and unadulterated Word of God.

As one goes through both these letters of instructions written by Paul to Timothy, we see that nowhere does he ask or encourage him to use his own wisdom and understanding about this ministry. Rather, Paul only asks and repeatedly emphasizes upon him to instruct others about what he has already received, has already been instructed about. Timothy had mainly learned these things through his association with Paul. And we have seen earlier that Paul always preached, taught, and instructed nothing out of his own knowledge, wisdom, and understanding, but only what he received from the Lord, what he had through the inspiration of the Holy Spirit. This instruction of Paul to Timothy is very similar to what the Lord Jesus had instructed His disciples at the time of His ascension, in the Great Commission (Matthew 28:18-20) – the disciples had to preach and teach only that which the Lord had taught them, and do so under the power of the Holy Spirit (Acts 1:8). Since their obedience to the Lord’s instructions was essential, therefore, by implication, they were not to practice, preach, or teach anything that they contrived through their own wisdom and understanding.

In his second letter to Timothy, Paul also asks him to be one who rightly divides God's Word (2 Timothy 2:14-17). For any person this discernment can only come through being dependent upon the Holy Spirit, since, as the Believer’s Helper, one of the functions of the Holy Spirit is to teach and expound God’s Word to them (John 14:26; 16:13; 1 Corinthians 2:10-14). It is a sad and a very difficult to understand bitter fact of Christianity, that in the Churches or Assemblies and amongst Believers, there is an inordinate but prevalent tendency for Believers to rely more upon men, men’s teachings, words, and writings, and often even on men’s fables, than upon the Holy Spirit of God to learn God’s Word and its practical implications and application in life. And, this tendency manifests itself in many ways in the life of Believers, e.g., as following men, as in blind faith copying the words, phrases, and mannerisms of men without cross-checking and examining them, as forming factions in the Church; causing and maintaining divisions in the Church and amongst Believers; ignoring the God given methods and the Biblical instructions for the functioning of the Church and instead following man-made rules, regulations and instructions; putting man before God in taking decisions; of trying to be a man-pleaser rather than a God pleaser; of being more afraid of man than of God etc. It sooner or later leads to various problems in the Believer’s own lives, in the Church, and in fellowship amongst God’s children.

If we, for whatever reasons, are unable to contribute to the growth and progress of the Church and the Believers; then the least we can do is not in any way preach and teach things that contribute to disunity and divisions in the Church. For this, all that we need to do is to stop following persons and copying their words, and actually start following God and obeying His Word. Paul through the Holy Spirit, has set himself as an example of following the Lord; and wants that others too should follow the Lord in the same manner as he was doing, since what he was preaching and teaching was not something he had devised, but what he had received from the Lord for the Believers and Church of the Lord (1 Corinthians 11:1; 1 Thessalonians 4:1-2).

From the next article we will start considering the role of the Church Elders and some aspects of enforcing discipline in the Church.

If you have not yet accepted the discipleship of the Lord, make your decision in favor of the Lord Jesus now to ensure your eternal life and heavenly blessings. Where there is obedience to the Lord, where there is respect and obedience to His Word, there is also the blessing and protection of the Lord. Voluntarily repent of your sins, and ask the Lord Jesus to forgive your sins; voluntarily and sincerely, surrender yourself to Him - this is the only way to salvation and heavenly life.

Church Stewardship - Practical Implications – 10

The Born-Again Christian Believers, as stewards of the provisions and privileges given to them by God, are accountable to Him for worthily utilizing them. Of these provisions and privileges, the one we have currently been learning about is God having made the Believers members of God’s Church and having them brought into fellowship with God’s other children, by God. As stewards of these Church related privileges, it is the responsibility of the Believers to see that they contribute to the growth of the Church, and help the Believers progress in their spiritual lives. We have seen that proper ministry of God’s Word, in quality as well as quantity, in the Church and amongst the Believers determines this growth and progress of the Church as well as the Believers; and in the previous articles we have seen some aspects of this. In the last article we started considering 1 Timothy 1:3-4, and in our consideration of 1 Timothy 1:3, where Paul asks Timothy to ensure that no other doctrine, other than the one he had taught to the Ephesian Church is taught by the others, we had seen how Timothy had to do this. In Acts 20:18-27, Paul reminisces with the Elders of the Ephesian Church about his ministry amongst them. The summary of  Paul’s teachings in Ephesus is given in Acts 20:18-20, 27. Today, we will see from this passage in Acts about the “doctrine” that Paul had taught in Ephesus, and had asked Timothy to ensure it was being taught by others also; and also consider 1 Timothy 1:4 regarding the ministry of God’s Word.

In these verses from Acts 20:18-20, 27, we see the main features of this “doctrine” that Paul had taught in Ephesus. Paul is asking Timothy to ensure that only those teachings are being taught, and nothing new is brought in by anybody in their preaching and teaching. The implication is that which was so necessary for the Ephesian Church, that Timothy was to ensure adherence to it, is equally necessary for the present-day Churches, and the Believers, as God’s stewards, need to ensure that these doctrines are adhered to.

Paul’s doctrinal points that he practiced, as summarized here in Acts 20, are:

  • Verse 18: Paul made it appoint to live an exemplary life amongst them, i.e., he first practiced and demonstrated his faith and its implications in his life amongst his audience, the people around him; only then did he preach about it; and continued to affirm his preaching by living out whatever he preached.

  • Verse 19: In doing this, Paul’s primary intention was to serve the Lord – be a God pleaser, and not a man pleaser (Galatians 1:10). In this verse Paul says that he had a deep burden for the sin of the people in Ephesus who were given to idolatry and debauchery, and he pleaded to God for them with tears. Paul ministered God’s Word to them in humility, patiently putting up with the opposition and problems being brought upon him by his detractors – the Jews, the “people of God,” who claimed to follow the Scriptures given to them by God. In other words, Paul’s preaching and teaching exposed the errors and deficiencies in the lives of these “people of God,” who claimed to follow the Scriptures, which made them uncomfortable. So, instead of evaluating and correcting themselves, they responded by trying to stop Paul from preaching and teaching such things. But Paul persevered, undaunted by the problems they brought against him. The lesson to learn is that the characteristics of ministers of God’s Word must be to have a heartfelt burden for the misled and lost, and persevere in ministering to them; and despite facing opposition and rejection from ones he is trying to help, live humbly in all circumstances.

  • Verse 20, 27: Paul did not have his own agenda for the preaching and teaching he was to do. We have seen in the previous articles that Paul depended upon the Holy Spirit to give him the appropriate Word to preach and teach. Under the guidance of the Holy Spirit, he preached and taught to the Church, all that was helpful for them, in this manner he unhesitatingly declared to them the “whole counsel of God” as guided by the Holy Spirit. In other words, the Holy Spirit gave him the plan and outline, and then under His guidance and appropriate manner gave him the ability and wisdom to preach and teach everything from God’s word. Had Paul done this on his own, then quite likely he might not have been able to do it as well through his own wisdom; he could have left out some things, could have forgotten to mention some other things, could have felt that preaching and teaching some other things was not necessary, etc. But in the planning and guidance of the Holy Spirit he could teach them the whole counsel of God, in the adverse circumstances. This clearly explains to us why Paul gave this instruction to Timothy and insisted that what he had taught and preached to them while he was with them in Ephesus, only that should now be taught and preached by others, and nothing other than that. Since that was the “whole counsel of God;” that was what the Ephesian Church needed to know and learn, and it is equally important and necessary for us as well, today. As mentioned here in verse 20, Paul did this through three methods – preaching and teaching to the “you,” i.e., the Church, the congregation; preaching publicly to those outside the Church; preaching and teaching from house to house. This shows us the three components that must be carried out for the Word ministry to be effective, for the Church and the Believers to grow.

  • Verse 21: Witnessing for his faith and preaching the Gospel, “repentance toward God and faith toward our Lord Jesus Christ” was an essential and integral part of Paul’s ministry. Paul’s main intention was not showing off his knowledge and understanding of the Scriptures, nor his eloquence, nor his ability of delivering messages that would be pleasing to the audience; but calling people to repentance and faith in the Lord Jesus. In both his letters of instructions to Timothy, Paul has emphasized to him for doing the same (1 Timothy 4:11, 15-16; 2 Timothy 4:1-5).

Then in 1 Timothy 1:4 Paul expressly cautions Timothy against going after fables (i.e., man-made stories) and endless genealogies, in his preaching and teachings. In other words, the content and manner of the preaching and teaching of the Word also has a bearing on the outcome, and should not be contrived, but should be truly and sincerely be Biblical. In this verse Paul also cautions Timothy that resorting to using fables and genealogies, i.e., using man-made stories and arguments to preach and teach God’s Word only causes disputes, and does not bring about godly edification; edification only happens through God’s Word. In other words, though they may seem interesting and attractive, though people may appreciate them, but these fables and genealogies never bring about growth and edification of the Church or of the believers. Hence, as it was then for Timothy, similarly today the ministers of God’s Word should make it a point to stick to God’s Word, learn what is to be preached on each occasion from the Holy Spirit, expound it to the audience as the Holy Spirit leads them to do, instead of creating stories and scenarios on their own, which will be vain and fruitless.

We will carry on from here in the next article, and look at some other aspects of the ministry of God’s Word from some other passages.
