The Purpose of Baptism (3) - Obedience

In the previous two articles we have been studying about the purpose of baptism. God had John, the forerunner of His Son, baptize people in water, as an integral part of his ministry. In other words, from God’s point of view, baptism was important to prepare the people to understand and accept the ministry of the Savior Lord Jesus Christ - the Savior of the world, and John the Baptist has himself said so (John 1:31). We have seen that no one opposed John or questioned him about starting something not mentioned in the then Scriptures, i.e., our present-day Old Testament; rather, even the Pharisees and Sadducees came to him to be baptized. So far, from the Biblical accounts of baptism, we have seen two purposes - first, Witnessing, i.e., to publicly and externally witness about the inner change brought about by confession and repentance for sins; second, Preparation, i.e., to prepare people through this confession and repentance to understand and get ready for the accounting and judgment of God, which will come upon everyone. Today we will look at the third purpose, Obedience to God.

We see in the Gospel accounts that even the Lord Jesus did not take baptism just where He was, but came all the way from Galilee to Bethabara, the place where John was baptizing, to be baptized, at around thirty years of age (Matthew 3:13, John 1:28; Luke 3:23). A look at the map shows that this was a considerable distance, but Jesus travelled the distance to be baptized, before He began His ministry. Though John and Jesus were related, through their respective mothers (Luke 1:36), but apparently, the true identity of the Lord Jesus had not been revealed to John, neither by God nor by the Lord Jesus, till Jesus came to him to be baptized. It is only at the time of the Lord’s baptism that John came to know who Jesus actually was, and he then addresses Him as “The Lamb of God that takes away the sins of the world” (John 1:29-36). Prior to this, all that John knew was that the Messiah was about to come (Matthew 3:11-12; John 1:26-27), his ministry was to prepare the people to recognize and accept him, and baptizing people was a necessary part of that ministry (John 1:31). Therefore, when the Lord Jesus came to John to be baptized, not because of their familial relationship, but to fulfill the ministries entrusted by God to each of them. Now, John, being made aware of who the one standing before him and asking for baptism actually was, quite understandably, John’s response was: And John tried to prevent Him, saying, "I need to be baptized by You, and are You coming to me?" (Matthew 3:14). What is important to note for our study is the reply the Lord Jesus gave to John, “But Jesus answered and said to him, "Permit it to be so now, for thus it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness." Then he allowed Him” (Matthew 3:15).

The Lord Jesus was sinless; He did not need to repent for anything; He did not need to be made righteous, He already was righteous. When Jesus came to him, John not only declared Him as the Son of God, but also asked that Lord Jesus baptize him, instead of taking baptism from him. Yet the Lord Jesus asked John to baptize Him - to fulfill all righteousness, i.e., in obedience to God the Father, subjected Himself to other’s God given ministry. This unflinching obedience to God was something the Lord Jesus affirmed repeatedly during His earthly ministry (John 4:34; 5:30; 6:38; 8:29). There was nothing that baptism could do to embellish the Lord’s holiness and being sinless. But God the Son still took baptism from a human being because it was God the Father’s will. Notice, the Lord Jesus did not say “thus it is fitting for me to become righteous”; instead, He said “thus it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness.” It was John’s ministry, his God assigned work to baptize people, and he too had to do it in obedience to God. Therefore, the Lord Jesus included him in the response by using “us”. Also, instead of saying “becoming righteous”, the Lord said “to fulfill all righteousness”, i.e., “to fulfill what God has said is to be done.”

In John 3:22, and 4:1-2, we see mentioned that people thought that the Lord Jesus baptized others; but 4:2 clarifies that not Jesus but His disciples baptized. Some of the initial disciples of the Lord Jesus were John the Baptist’s disciples initially, but then switched over to the Lord Jesus (John 1:37-38). But from the point of view of our study today, it is important to take note that the Lord Jesus did not stop His disciples from baptizing; He allowed them to do so. Later on, nowhere in the Bible do we ever find any mention of anyone speaking of anything related to this baptism given by the Lord’s disciples. No person ever said that their being baptized in the presence of the Lord Jesus, or by the disciples of the Lord Jesus, had given them anything extra, or any special advantage. But the very fact that the Lord Jesus not only took baptism Himself, but also allowed His disciples to continue baptizing speaks to us of the high value the Lord held for obeying God. Today, it is the Lord’s commandment that His disciples take baptism (Matthew 28:19). So, from the example of the Lord Jesus, and His disciples, and from His commandment, it is evident that baptism is a way of expressing a person’s being aware of what God has said, and fulfilling it in obedience to God.

If you are a Christian Believer, then please examine your life and make sure that you are actually a Born-Again disciple of the Lord, i.e., are redeemed from your sins, have submitted and surrendered your life to the Lord Jesus to live in obedience to Him and His Word. Whoever may be the preacher or teacher, but you should always, like the Berean Believers, first cross-check and test all teachings that you receive, from the Word of God. Only after ascertaining the truth and veracity of the teachings brought to you by men, should you accept and obey them (Acts 17:11; 1 Thessalonians 5:21). If you do not do this, the false apostles and prophets sent by Satan as ministers of Christ (2 Corinthians 11:13-15), will by their trickery, cunningness, and craftiness render you ineffective for the Lord and cause severe damage to your Christian life and your rewards.

If you have not yet accepted the discipleship of the Lord Jesus, then to ensure your eternal life and heavenly rewards, take a decision in favor of the Lord Jesus now. Wherever there is surrender and obedience towards the Lord Jesus, the Lord’s blessings and safety are also there. If you are still not Born Again, have not obtained salvation, or have not asked the Lord Jesus for forgiveness for your sins, then you have the opportunity to do so right now. A short prayer said voluntarily with a sincere heart, with heartfelt repentance for your sins, and a fully submissive attitude, “Lord Jesus, I confess that I have disobeyed You, and have knowingly or unknowingly, in mind, in thought, in attitude, and in deeds, committed sins. I believe that you have fully borne the punishment of my sins by your sacrifice on the cross, and have paid the full price of those sins for all eternity. Please forgive my sins, change my heart and mind towards you, and make me your disciple, take me with you." God longs for your company and wants to see you blessed, but to make this possible, is your personal decision. Will you not say this prayer now, while you have the time and opportunity to do so - the decision is yours.

The Purpose of Baptism (2) - Preparation

In the previous article, based on the ‘Principle of First Use’, we have seen one purpose of baptism, that it is to publicly witness about the inner change brought about by repentance of sins and submitting one’s life to the Lord. Around the time of the earthly ministry of the Lord Jesus, there was a great anticipation amongst the people that the Promised Messiah is about to come. When John the Baptist started his ministry as the forerunner of the Lord Jesus, many people assumed him to be the Promised Messiah, but John corrected them (Luke 3:15-16; John 1:19-23). Therefore, their next question to John was, “If you are neither the Messiah, nor Elijah, nor the Prophet; why then do you baptize?” (John 1:25-26). In other words, the expectation of the people was that when the Promised Messiah comes, He will do what John was doing. But John immediately corrected the people’s misconception about him, plainly telling them that he, i.e., John, was only the forerunner of the Messiah, sent to prepare the way of the Lord, as is stated in all the 4 Gospel accounts (Matthew 3:3; Mark 1:3; Luke 3:4; John 1:23). He also told them that the purpose of the coming of the Promised Messiah was far greater than merely baptizing people in water. The Messiah was coming, as is recorded in all the four Gospels, to “thoroughly clean out His threshing floor and burn the chaff with unquenchable fire” (Matthew 3:11-12).

Though the implication is evident, but still, let us put together bits and pieces and complete the picture. John the Baptist was sent to prepare the people to receive and accept the Promised Messiah. The Messiah Himself was coming to prepare the world for the coming judgment of God, where everyone will have to give an account of his life to Him and receive their rewards accordingly (Acts 17:30-31; 2 Corinthians 5:10). To facilitate the acceptance of the Messiah and His ministry, John the Baptist went about preaching repentance of sins, and witnessing for that inner transformation through the external public act of taking baptism. In other words, a person’s acknowledgement and confession of sins, and repentance for them, i.e., humility and obedience to God was necessary for him to be able to recognize and accept the Messiah, and to personally accept His ministry, when he came. This conclusion is no conjecture; rather, not only does the earthly ministry of the Lord Jesus amply bears it out, but the Lord Jesus also said it so (Matthew 21:32-32). The common people, who accepted John the Baptist’s call to repentance and baptism, also accepted Lord Jesus as the Promised Messiah. But the haughty religious leaders, the Pharisees and Sadducees, who had not accepted John the Baptist’s call to “bear fruits worthy of repentance” (Matthew 3:8), also rejected the Lord Jesus as the Messiah.

From this we can derive the second purpose of baptism. If baptism is taken not as a ritual or a formality, but with the correct attitude of accepting sins and repenting for them, of publicly witnessing about the inner transformation, of being prepared to live humbly in obedience to God and His Word, then it also prepares the person to receive the ministry of the Lord Jesus in their lives, i.e., to learn about and prepare for their coming accountability before the Lord and His judgement; which eventually, everyone will have to face.

The Purpose of Baptism (1) - Witnessing

Having seen some important principles of studying and interpreting God’s Word the Bible, and some preliminary considerations that will help us understand about baptism, from today we will start studying about it, from God’s Word the Bible. As we have seen in the earlier articles, the Jews were quite familiar with the use of water for ceremonial cleansing, in the form or bathing or washing. Moreover, outside cleansing with water was also known and accepted as symbolical of the inner cleansing from sin (Isaiah 1:16; Zechariah 13:1; John 13:10; Hebrews 10:19-22; Titus 3:4-7). In other words, an external representation and sign to witness to others of the inner change within the person was also necessary. The Lord Jesus said in His ‘Sermon on the Mount’ that this external witnessing, this external evidence, of the inner transformation of His followers is essential (Matthew 5:14-16). Later the Apostles in their writings too spoke of this external witnessing, of presenting to the world an external sign of becoming followers of the Lord Jesus (Romans 12:1-2; 1 Peter 1:14-16). With this in mind, let us look at the baptism as it was initially practiced.

The first Biblical record of baptism is in Matthew 3. We see here in verses 1-8 that basically two categories of people came to John the Baptist to be baptized. Verse 5-6 speaks of the common people residing in Jerusalem, Judea, and the region around Jordan; and verse 7 talks about the religious leaders of the Jews, the Pharisees and the Sadducees coming to him to be baptized. The common people of verse 6, were baptized by John in the river Jordan, but he turned away the Pharisees and Sadducees of verse 7. There is something here in these verses, that is of relevance for our today’s study. The common people were baptized, “confessing their sins”, i.e., they did not hide their actual inner state, but openly confessed it, and John baptized them - an external sign of an inner transformation by acknowledging of personal sins and repenting of them. But no such confession coming from the Pharisees and Sadducees is recorded here; they quite likely took it as a formal ritual, and wanted to undergo baptism to be seen and praised by people for doing it (Matthew 23:5). But John roundly condemned them for their hypocritical attitude, and asked them to first “bear fruits worthy of repentance” (Matthew 3:8), i.e., John asked for external evidence of an inner change from them. The common people provided the evidence by their confession, but from the religious leaders John asked that it should come through their works and living.

So, from the principle of the first use, we see that baptism was only given as a sign of acknowledging an inner transformation of repentance for sins by a person. The person being baptized, publicly confessed his sins and repentance, and John then baptized them. Those who were known for their hypocritical living, who wanted to take it merely to fulfill a ritual, to only show to the people, were turned away. The door to those who were turned away was left open; they could come back for baptism, provided they exhibited through their lives and behavior their inner transformation, and like the others were ready to publicly confess their sins. Note the sequence that is given here in God’s Word - first repentance, then baptism. Baptism did not make anyone righteous or penitent; but those who were penitent, only they were baptized. This affirms what we had said at the beginning of this series - baptism does not make a person righteous and acceptable to God; rather, those who have become righteous and acceptable to God, they are to take baptism to witness for the change that has come within them. This very important point is largely ignored in the ritualistic baptism done today.

God longs for your company and wants to see you blessed, but to make this possible, is your personal decision.

Preliminary Considerations (4) - Interpreting in Context

We have seen in the earlier articles that the Jews were quite familiar with ceremonial washing, bathing, and cleansing for their purification. This had been prescribed in the Law as well as stated in the Prophets in their Scriptures, i.e., that which is the Old Testament for us. We have also seen that because of the characteristics of the Word of God, a very important principle for interpretation and understanding of Biblical things based on those characteristics is the Principle of the Unalterable Primary Meaning. The primary and unalterable meaning of a Biblical term or thing is the meaning that is given or used with the first use of that term. In other words, it is the meaning that those people to whom that thing was first given or mentioned, understood. Every other subsequent meaning or interpretation can supplement it, but never contradict, or alter, or replace this primary meaning.

Before we get into our subject, it is necessary to bear in mind another very essential and important principle of Bible interpretation - study and interpret everything in its context. The context is both immediate, i.e., the preceding and succeeding verses, or passages; and remote; i.e., the other Bible verses or passages related to that topic or term. Not adhering to this principle about interpreting in context – both immediate and remote, is probably the most common cause of various variations, misinterpretations, and misunderstandings that abound in Christendom about things given in God’s Word. It is quite commonly seen that words, phrases, sentences, verses, passages etc. are often taken out of their context, and then interpreted as saying things that were never actually meant in that part of God’s Word. Or, the other related verses and passages are not taken into consideration and contradictory meanings and interpretations are given.

The importance of considering the immediate context is because we need to keep in mind that the Bible too uses language in a manner similar to any other text written in that language. Therefore, it has textual expressions, figures of speech, implied meanings, sarcasm, poetic usage, and other literary forms, just as any other text written in any language would have. Therefore, as is necessary for all other writings, for the Bible too, it is the context that determines the appropriate meaning of the word under consideration. Merely taking up and interpreting a word or phrase, without considering its context, is bound to bring in errors in meanings and misinterpretations.

Another reason for always considering the immediate context is derived from the history of the Bible. The books of the Bible were written as any other document is written - in sections and paragraphs, and not in the chapters and verses that we see in our Bibles today. That is why we see that whenever one part of the Bible quotes another part from somewhere else, it only mentions the name of the author of that book, but never the actual reference as chapter and verse, since there were no chapters or verses in the Scriptures at that time to give a reference of. The division into chapters and verses was done much later to facilitate Bible study through quoting and referencing its particular parts, as an aid to memorizing God’s Word, etc. While this artificial division into verses and chapters is very helpful, and is used universally, it also has a serious drawback - the breaking up into verses at times cuts off the thought or flow of the passage in between, without its getting completed. This gets compounded in translation into other languages, since grammar and sentence constructions differ amongst languages. Therefore, unless one makes it a point to consider everything in its immediate context, i.e., along with the preceding and succeeding verses or passages, serious errors can be brought in inadvertently; and often are brought in because of ignoring this fact.

Similarly, it is necessary to keep the other related verses and passages in mind, and interpret in a manner that does not contradict these other related sections of God’s Word. Since the Bible is the inerrant, infallible, unalterable Word of God, therefore one part of the Bible can never contradict another, can never mean something that does not support or go along with a meaning or interpretation ascribed to another related part of God’s Word. Rather, since every verse and section of the Bible supports and supplements the rest. Therefore, if our meaning or interpretation contradicts, or is not in conformity with all of the other related verses and sections, then there is an error in the meaning or interpretation that we are giving. It is not the Word of God that is in error; the error is in the meaning or interpretation that we are giving to it, and this has to be corrected, has to be brought in conformity with the rest of the Word of God.

The necessity of remembering and adhering to these principles will become apparent, as we study some passages related to our topic; verses and passages which are often used to give it meanings and interpretations that are not factual. Our keeping these principles in mind and following them will help us understand those verses and passages and to steer clear of the erroneous, unBiblical interpretations which have become associated with Baptism. In the next article, we will look into the purpose of baptism.

If you are a Christian Believer, then please examine your life and make sure that you are actually a Born-Again disciple of the Lord, i.e., are redeemed from your sins, have submitted and surrendered your life to the Lord Jesus to live in obedience to Him and His Word.
