The Elementary Principles – 26

Baptisms - 5

Preliminary Considerations (4) - Interpreting in Context

Every Christian Believer needs to study, learn, and apply the whole of God’s Word in his life for spiritual growth and maturity. We have seen that there are three kinds of teachings, i.e., teachings related to the gospel, teachings about the six elementary principles given in Hebrews 6:1-2, and teachings related to practical Christian living, that are essential to learn, since they provide a firm foundation to build up Christian lives. Of these three kinds of teachings, we have seen the teachings related to the gospel, and presently are considering teachings related to “Baptisms,” which is the third of the elementary principles given in Hebrews 6:1-2. We have seen in the earlier articles that the Jews were quite familiar with ceremonial washing, bathing, and cleansing for their purification. This had been prescribed in the Law as well as stated in the Prophets in their Scriptures, i.e., that which is the Old Testament for us. We have also seen that because of the characteristics of the Word of God, a very important principle for interpretation and understanding of Biblical things based on those characteristics is the Principle of the Unalterable Primary Meaning. The primary and unalterable meaning of a Biblical term or thing is the meaning that is given or used with the first use of that term. In other words, it is the meaning that those people to whom that thing was first given or mentioned, understood. This is the primary, unalterable meaning which should never be ignored or contradicted in any interpretation. Every other subsequent meaning or interpretation can supplement it, but never contradict, or alter, or replace this primary meaning.

Before we get into our main subject of “baptisms,” it is necessary to bear in mind another very essential and important principle of Bible interpretation - study and interpret everything in its context. The context is both immediate, i.e., the preceding and succeeding verses, or passages; and remote; i.e., the other Bible verses or passages related to that topic or term. Not adhering to this principle about interpreting in context – both immediate and remote, is probably the most common cause of various variations, misinterpretations, and misunderstandings that abound in Christendom about things given in God’s Word. It is quite commonly seen that words, phrases, sentences, verses, passages etc. are often taken out of their context, and then interpreted as saying things that were never actually meant in that part of God’s Word. Or, the other related verses and passages are not taken into consideration and contradictory meanings and interpretations are given.

The importance of considering the immediate context is because we need to keep in mind that the Bible too uses language in a manner similar to any other text written in that language. Therefore, it has textual expressions, figures of speech, implied meanings, sarcasm, poetic usage, and other literary forms, just as any other text written in any language would have. Therefore, as is necessary for all other writings, for the Bible too, it is the context that determines the appropriate meaning of the word under consideration. Merely taking up and interpreting a word or phrase, without considering its context, is bound to bring in errors in meanings and misinterpretations.

Another reason for always considering the immediate context is derived from the history of the Bible. The books of the Bible were written as any other document is written - in sections and paragraphs, and not in the chapters and verses that we see in our Bibles today. That is why we see that whenever one part of the Bible quotes another part from somewhere else, it only mentions the name of the author of that book, but never the actual reference as chapter and verse, since there were no chapters or verses in the Scriptures at that time to give a reference of. The division into chapters and verses was done much later to facilitate Bible study through quoting and referencing its particular parts, as an aid to memorizing God’s Word, etc. While this artificial division into verses and chapters is very helpful, and is used universally, it also has a serious drawback - the breaking up into verses at times cuts off the thought or flow of the passage in between, without it getting completed. This gets compounded in translation into other languages, since grammar and sentence constructions differ amongst languages. Therefore, unless one makes it a point to consider everything in its immediate context, i.e., along with the preceding and succeeding verses or passages, serious errors can be brought in inadvertently; and often are brought in because of ignoring this fact.

Similarly, it is necessary to keep the other related verses and passages in mind, and interpret in a manner that does not contradict these other related sections of God’s Word. Since the Bible is the inerrant, infallible, unalterable Word of God, therefore one part of the Bible can never contradict another, can never mean something that does not support or go along with a meaning or interpretation ascribed to another related part of God’s Word. Rather, since every verse and section of the Bible supports and supplements the rest. Therefore, if our meaning or interpretation contradicts, or is not in conformity with all of the other related verses, passages, and sections, then there is an error in the meaning or interpretation that we are giving. It is not the Word of God that is in error; the error is in the meaning or interpretation that we are giving to it, and this has to be corrected, has to be brought in conformity with the rest of the Word of God.

The necessity of remembering and adhering to these principles will become apparent, as we study some passages related to our topic; verses and passages which are often used to give it meanings and interpretations that are not factual. Our keeping these principles in mind and following them will help us understand those verses and passages and to steer clear of the erroneous, unBiblical interpretations which have become associated with Baptism. In the next article, we will look into the purpose of baptism.

If you have not yet accepted the discipleship of the Lord, make your decision in favor of the Lord Jesus now to ensure your eternal life and heavenly blessings. Where there is obedience to the Lord, where there is respect and obedience to His Word, there is also the blessing and protection of the Lord. Repenting of your sins, and asking the Lord Jesus for forgiveness of your sins, voluntarily and sincerely, surrendering yourself to Him - is the only way to salvation and heavenly life. You only have to say a short but sincere prayer to the Lord Jesus Christ willingly and with a penitent heart, and at the same time completely commit and submit your life to Him. You can also make this prayer and submission in words something like, “Lord Jesus, I am sorry for my sins and repent of them. I thank you for taking my sins upon yourself, paying for them through your life.  Because of them you died on the cross in my place, were buried, and you rose again from the grave on the third day for my salvation, and today you are the living Lord God and have freely provided to me the forgiveness, and redemption from my sins, through faith in you. Please forgive my sins, take me under your care, and make me your disciple. I submit my life into your hands." Your one prayer from a sincere and committed heart will make your present and future life, in this world and in the hereafter, heavenly and blessed for eternity.

The Elementary Principles – 25

Baptisms - 4

Preliminary Considerations (3) - The Meaning

In our study on Baptism, the third elementary principle given in Hebrews 6:1-2, at the beginning of these Preliminary Considerations we have seen that the characteristics of God’s Word, the Bible demand that our understanding and interpretation of anything from the Bible should be consistent with the understanding and meaning that the people to whom it was initially mentioned, had about it. That remains the basic unalterable meaning, and other meanings and interpretations can supplement it, but never replace or alter it. We then saw that the Jews were quite familiar with ceremonially bathing or washing in water, for ceremonial cleansing, and even as an external sign of inner cleansing from sins. There are ample references in the Old Testament Law as well as the writings of the Prophets to show this. This was probably why no one disputed with either John the Baptist or Peter and the other disciples of the Lord Jesus when they asked people to be baptized; no one accused them of starting something outside of Scriptures. They all readily accepted the call to be baptized as a form of cleansing, and submitted to it. Carrying our Preliminary Considerations further, today we will see what the word ‘baptism’ or ‘to be baptized’ meant for those people at that time, when John the Baptist, and later the disciples of Christ gave the call for it.

The first use of this word in the Bible is given in relation to the ministry of John the Baptist, in Matthew 3:6 - “And were baptized of him in Jordan, confessing their sins.” The word used in the original Greek language, and translated in English as ‘baptized’, is “baptizo”, and Mickelson's Enhanced Strong's Greek and Hebrew Dictionaries states its meanings as: 1. to immerse, submerge; and 2. to make whelmed or soaked (i.e. fully wet). This Greek word “baptizo” is a derivative of its root word “bapto”; Strong’s definition of “bapto” is “to whelm, i.e., to cover wholly with fluid”; and Thayer defines “bapto” as - 1. To dip, dip in, immerse; and 2. To dip into dye, to dye, colour. These meanings fit very well with the Jew’s understanding of ceremonial washings and bathing, which were usually carried out in pools or tanks of water, and the one being cleansed had the cleaning water touch and cover every part of his body. Therefore, at the time of the ministry of John the Baptist, the earthly ministry of the Lord Jesus, and the ministry of the disciples, if anyone was told to be ‘baptized’ they would understand it as getting dipped into water and be cleansed by water. We will look further into the implications of this meaning in later articles, but for now, in these preliminary considerations, those initial people getting baptized understood and accepted it as being dipped into or wholly covered with water as a symbol of being cleansed.

The Lord Jesus used this word symbolically also, which draws from this primary meaning we have seen above, and again affirms that to be baptized meant to be dipped into or immersed into. In context of His being caught and crucified, to be killed, the Lord said to His disciples, “But I have a baptism to be baptized with, and how distressed I am till it is accomplished!” (Luke 12:50; see also Matthew 20:22; Mark 10:38). Here too, the Lord Jesus uses the same word, “baptizo”, as is used in Matthew 3:6. From what the Lord is saying to His disciples, it is apparent He is talking about something into which He will soon be whelmed, i.e., He will be totally caught up with, be wholly covered or totally submerged into.

Similarly, in Romans 6:3, when Paul under the guidance of the Holy Spirit, using the same word “baptizo” writes, “Or do you not know that as many of us as were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into His death?”, take note of his using “into” and not “with”. The implication of his statement is clear, the Christian Believers have not been sprinkled with or touched with Christ Jesus and His death, but have been covered by Christ Jesus (Romans 13:14; Galatians 3:27), have been made a part of Him in His death (Romans 6:5; Philippians 3:10).

Therefore, the Holy Spirit has made it clear that whenever the word ‘baptism’ is used in God’s Word, it is always with the meaning of being covered with or immersed into. Which is the same as the Jews understood about their ceremonial cleansing through bathing and washing, by being covered with water, or their whole body was brought in contact with the cleaning water. The word “baptizo”, to them, never meant being sprinkled upon, or just a part of their body being touched with water. There is no denying the fact that in the Old Testament Law, sprinkling is mentioned for ritual purification; but can it be equated with the New Testament Baptism, especially in context of this word “baptizo” being specifically used? We will see about it in later articles. In the next article, we will try to understand the purpose of baptism.

The Elementary Principles – 24

Baptisms - 3

Preliminary Considerations (2) - The Old Testament Antecedents

While considering the third elementary principle, Baptisms from Hebrews 6:1-2; in the last article we have seen that since God’s Word the Bible is the one and only true, eternal, infallible, unalterable Word of God forever established in heaven; never ever changing according to time, place or person. Therefore, applying this fact to our study on baptism means that what the term ‘baptism’ or ‘to be baptized’ meant for the people who had taken baptism in the New Testament times initially, the same meaning is the basic, unchanging meaning for everyone else, at all times, and all places. Every other meaning and interpretation can supplement or complement this basic meaning, but never replace or change it. In this context we had brought up two points for further consideration - firstly, what, if anything, does the Old Testament say about baptism? Second, why did no one accuse John the Baptist or the disciples of Christ Jesus of starting off some new unscriptural ritual? How come, everyone seemed to be familiar with the term ‘baptism’, and accepted it, without any controversy? Both of these points are related, and we will see about them today.

We need to realize that in the Old Testament although baptism has not been mentioned, but in the Law, and in the ceremonies and rituals given by God through Moses to the Israelites, ceremonial washings were an integral and very important part of the observances. Consider an incidence related to the Lord Jesus and the Pharisees, given in Matthew 15:1-3. From this incidence we can see and understand how particular and adherent the Pharisees were maintaining their ceremonies and rituals. Yet they went to John the Baptist to be baptized (Matthew 3:7), and never objected to the baptism being practiced by John the Baptist as well as the disciples of the Lord Jesus (John 4:1-2). If John the Baptist, or the Lord Jesus, or the Lord’s disciples had started something new, then surely those who could object to not washing hands before food, would have objected to it and protested much more seriously about this new practice. These examples show that baptism, though not mentioned under this term in the Old Testament, but it was nothing new for those people; in some form was already known and accepted by the Jews and their religious leaders. Consider some Old Testament examples of ceremonial purification, washing of clothes, and bathing as prescribed in the Law:

  • For people ritually unclean (Leviticus 14:8-9).

  • For people made unclean because of body fluids (Leviticus 15:3-12).

  • For people become unclean because of eating blood or dead animals (Leviticus 17:15-16).

  • For anyone who has become unclean by touching a dead person, or bones of a man, or a grave (Numbers 19:16-20)

  • The High Priest, Aaron being the first one, on the day of Atonement had to first make himself ceremonially clean and then enter the Most Holy Place of the Tabernacle (Leviticus 16:23-28).

The Old Testament prophets also spoke of washing and cleansing from sins to become acceptable to God (Isaiah 1:16; Zechariah 13:1). And, the Lord Jesus in John 13, alludes to this in His conversation with Peter about washing of Peter’s feet John 13:6-10 - pay particular attention to verse 10 here. The author of Hebrews also alludes to these ceremonial washings in Hebrews 9:6-10.

Therefore, when John the Baptist in his ministry as the forerunner of the Messiah, the Lord Jesus, came preaching repentance and baptizing people in the river Jordan (Matthew 3:1-6); and similarly, when Peter asked the devout Jews to repent and be baptized (Acts 2:38), neither of them surprised anyone by asking the people to be baptized. Even the Pharisees and Sadducees accepted John the Baptist’s call to be baptized, without raising any controversy, since to their understanding this was nothing new. It was similar to their known and accepted practice of ceremonially cleansing themselves; in some manner, they associated baptism with purification (John 3:25). So, even though baptism is not mentioned in the Old Testament, yet there are ample references in the Law as well as in the writings of the Prophets, of people being asked to wash, bathe, and cleanse themselves, using water. Moreover, outside cleansing with water was also known and accepted as symbolical of the inner cleansing from sin, as is apparent from some of the references given above; also see Isaiah 1:16; Zechariah 13:1; John 13:10; Hebrews 10:19-22; Titus 3:4-7.

In the next article we will consider the meaning of the word used in the original Greek language and translated as ‘baptism’ in English in the New Testament.

Growth through God’s Word /

The Elementary Principles – 23

Baptisms – 2

Preliminary Considerations (1) – People’s Initial Understanding

Before we get into our study on the third elementary principle mentioned in Hebrews 6:1-2, and our topic for the day, i.e.; baptism, we need to become aware of a basic fact related to interpreting and understanding the Bible. The Bible is the one and only true, eternal, infallible, unalterable Word of God forever established in heaven (Nehemiah 9:13; Psalm 19:9; Psalm 111:7-8; Psalm 119:75, 86, 89, 138, 142, 144, 152, 160, 172; Proverbs 30:5; Ecclesiastes 3:14; Isaiah 40:8; Jeremiah 31:36; Matthew 24:35; John 17:17; Romans 3:4; 1 Peter 1:25). It does not change with time, place, or person; it always remains the same for everybody, forever. Therefore, what it meant for the people at the place, and at the time its texts were written; that will always remain and mean the same for everyone else, at every place, and at any time. If it were to change due to any consideration, then it cannot be considered the always true, eternal, infallible and unalterable Word of God. For then some portion of it will no longer remain true, will change, hence it will not be eternal and unalterable, and since a part of it has failed, so it will not be infallible either. To state it simply, in that case, the Bible can never be accepted as the Word of God, and can never be trusted for anything; since then with time, or place, or person, parts of it will keep varying. Therefore, those who accept the Bible as the Word of God, will also have to accept it whole-heartedly with its characteristics, and not only keep them in mind when studying and interpreting the Bible, but also apply them to the meanings and interpretations that are given to its words, verses, and passages; and assess and accept or reject those meanings and interpretations accordingly.

With this in mind, as we go into various aspects and teachings about baptism, from God’s Word, it will be very helpful to look into and understand some preliminary things about baptism. To see and understand these preliminary things, we will also need to place ourselves in the same time-frame, as was, when these things first happened and were written in God’s Word. If we can understand these things from the point-of-view of those people who first heard of them and their application, we can also understand how they understood them and applied them to their lives. To put it in a different manner, the things related to baptism and the use of this term, when it was first said and done, conveyed a certain meaning and understanding of this word and its application to the people of that time. This meaning and understanding of this word and its application is the basic, unalterable fact, that has to be accepted, understood and applied by us today. Every other meaning and interpretation may supplement and complement this initial basic meaning and understanding, but none can ever replace or change this initial basic meaning. Else, as stated above, it would tantamount to altering God’s Word and rendering it untrue, fallible and alterable.

The first mention of baptism in the Bible is in the New Testament, in Matthew chapter 3, with the ministry of John the Baptist, the forerunner of the Lord Jesus Christ. There is no mention of baptism, as we know it, in the Old Testament. But the Old Testament is not completely silent about it either. Ponder over a scarcely, if at all noticed fact from God’s Word. This fact is scarcely ever, or not at all noticed by us, since we are all so accustomed, trained, and taught, to think about baptism in the manner our religious leaders and elders preach and teach to us about it, according to the beliefs and doctrines of our denominations, sects, and groups. This fact to ponder over is mentioned at two places - first, with the ministry of John the Baptist in Matthew 3:1-7; and second, in the first preaching of Peter to the devout Jews and his call to them for repentance and being baptized, in Acts 2:38.

With John’s ministry we see that not just the common people, but also the Pharisees and Sadducees, the experts and teachers of God’s Law and the Old Testament Scriptures, came to him for baptism. In Peter’s call for repentance and baptism, he was addressing the devout Jews (Acts 2:5), the common people, who had come from “every nation under heaven”, who would have been well versed with the requirements of the Law and its fulfilment. But neither the common people, nor the Pharisees and Sadducees who were scholars of God’s Word, challenged John, the son of Zacharias, a priest, for starting something new; or of preaching and teaching something not given in God’s Word; they did not accuse him of breaking God’s Word, or of blasphemy in the name of God. Similarly, the devout Jews when told by Peter to be baptized, did not ask for this term to be explained to them; nor has the Holy Spirit considered it necessary to have an explanation of this term recorded in God’s Word. The evident implication is that the common people, the Pharisees and Sadducees, and the devout Jews, they all understood and accepted what the term baptism or ‘to be baptized’ means; it was nothing new or unheard of and strange for them. Therefore, baptism as understood, accepted, and practiced in Lord Jesus’s earthly ministry time is the basic unalterable form, that could be supplemented, but never replaced; else it would against the character of God’s Word by implying that facts recorded in God’s Word and given as such to us for practicing, can be changed at some later date; an unacceptable and false notion. We will continue our study from this point onwards in the next article.
