Excommunication From the Church – 4

Every Born-Again Christian Believer, as God’s steward of the Church and the fellowship where God has placed him, must function in a manner that contributes to the growth of the Church and progress in spiritual life of the other Believers. Having seen the various aspects related to Church functioning and growth, we are now considering maintaining discipline in the Church amongst the congregation. At times it becomes necessary to exclude or excommunicate some errant Believer for his stubborn and unrelenting behavior. We have seen in the previous articles from Matthew 5:23-24 and Matthew 18:15-17 that the Lord has given the instructions and the process through which this excluding or excommunication should be done. In the last article we saw from Matthew 18:17a that although this must only be done after bringing the matter to the Church congregation, but we also learnt that deciding to do this is not any man’s decision, i.e., not any Pastor’s, or Elders’s, or any other leader’s decision, nor the decision of any Church committee or even the Church congregation, but an automatic implementation of a God given option for the situation. In the last article it had briefly been mentioned from Matthew 18:17b that though the Lord has said for this stubborn, unrelenting Believer, “let him be to you like a heathen and a tax collector” but it cannot mean cutting off all relationships and communication and altogether putting him away, totally cutting him off from the Church and fellowship. Today we will consider and understand what the Lord means when He says this.

Consider the various records of the interactions of the religious leaders of the Jews, with the Gentiles and the tax collectors during the time of the earthly ministry of the Lord. The tax collectors were shunned from the general Jewish community and fellowship, because they were working for the Roman government, to collect taxes from the Jews, and were often guilty of over-charging and extortion even from their own community. Therefore, the Jews did not like them, and avoided keeping company with them. But these tax collectors had not altogether been removed from the community, they had not ceased being Jews. They still were Jews, but were considered sinners and lowly, and were generally avoided and looked down upon by the community, and were thus humiliated by their own people. Moreover, it was not that all contacts with them had been totally cut off, and nobody ever mingled with them in any way. We see in Mark 2:15-16 and Luke 5:29-30, when Matthew the tax collector, having become a disciple of the Lord Jesus, held a feast, along with the other tax collectors and sinners, he had also invited the Pharisees and the Scribes, and they also joined them in that feast. This implies that Matthew the tax collector had good contacts and relations with the Jewish religious leaders, so he invited them to the feast in his house, and they did accept the invitation and joined the feast, though they neither liked the tax collectors, nor the sinners, nor the Lord Jesus. Similarly, the Jewish religious leaders were very often present with the crowd where the Lord was sitting with these people and teaching them, healing them; in other words, these religious leaders did not keep themselves aloof from those whom the considered sinners and lowly. So, we see that though the tax collectors, generally speaking, were disliked and avoided by the Jewish community to humiliate them, but the tax collectors had not been totally put away from the Jewish community. Though the social interaction with them was very limited, but they were still a part of the Jewish community.

Similarly, we see from the Lord Jesus’s admonition to the Pharisees in Matthew 23:15, that the Pharisees did communicate with the heathens to try to convert them to Judaism. Though the heathens were not allowed or accepted in the Temple (Acts 21:27-29), yet the Jewish religious leaders of that time did maintain a level of contact and communication with them. Therefore, like the tax collectors, the heathens too were unpopular, but not a de-barred or absolutely shunned community. But much more importantly, the Lord Jesus never cut-off any contact or mingling with them; rather, He was called a friend of the tax collectors and sinners (Matthew 9:10-11; 11:19).

So, keeping these Biblical facts in mind, now we can understand better the Lord’s statement “let him be to you like a heathen and a tax collector” – it means minimizing contact with such an errant Believer and generally avoiding social interactions with him, so that through such isolation and humiliation he is brought to the point of realizing his faults and guilt, and feeling remorse for his deeds; but do not altogether cast him away from the Church and the congregation. In any case, the Lord still loves him, he is still a child of God; but for now, the general community of the Believers should keep some distance from him, and not involve him in their activities. As we have seen in the last article, because of the various implications and connotations of a complete exclusion or excommunication, as it usually taken to mean, the Lord’s statement simply cannot mean totally cutting off a Believer from the Church or community, and discarding him. The Bible does not support such a point of view, as will become clearer in the next article.

This should make those people, especially those Church leaders, who advocate cutting off all contacts and interactions with the ones they have their differences and conflicts, and make others also do the same, seriously evaluate their stand by the Word of God, and correct their erroneous understanding and the wrong practices they have been preaching, teaching, and implementing in the Church. They should realize that since salvation cannot ever be lost; once a child of God, is always a child of God, his this status is irrevocable; and since the Church is the Body and Bride of the Lord, no part of this Body or Bride can ever be cut-off and thrown away, not in the least by any man, whosoever he may be; therefore no truly Born-Again Believer can be or will ever be put away from the Church of the Lord – neither by the Lord nor by any man. The Lord in his own way and time will chasten the errant Believer for his stubbornness and errors (Hebrews 12:5-12), he will not go unpunished and will surely have to bear the heavy consequences; but the Believer will never cease to be a part of the Lord or His Church; so how can any man decide and decree otherwise?

We will see some more aspects related to the duration and eventual outcome of this disciplinary action in the next article.

If you have not yet accepted the discipleship of the Lord, make your decision in favor of the Lord Jesus now to ensure your eternal life and heavenly blessings. Where there is obedience to the Lord, where there is respect and obedience to His Word, there is also the blessing and protection of the Lord. Repenting of your sins, and asking the Lord Jesus for forgiveness of your sins, voluntarily and sincerely, surrendering yourself to Him - is the only way to salvation and heavenly life. You only have to say a short but sincere prayer to the Lord Jesus Christ willingly and with a penitent heart, and at the same time completely commit and submit your life to Him. You can also make this prayer and submission in words something like, “Lord Jesus, I am sorry for my sins and repent of them. I thank you for taking my sins upon yourself, paying for them through your life.  Because of them you died on the cross in my place, were buried, and you rose again from the grave on the third day for my salvation, and today you are the living Lord God and have freely provided to me the forgiveness, and redemption from my sins, through faith in you. Please forgive my sins, take me under your care, and make me your disciple. I submit my life into your hands." Your one prayer from a sincere and committed heart will make your present and future life, in this world and in the hereafter, heavenly and blessed for eternity.

Excommunication From the Church – 3

We are learning about the Christian Believer’s responsibility to be a good steward of his God given provisions and privileges of being made a member of God’s Church and placed in fellowship with other children of God. Towards the Church and the fellowship that he has been placed in, the Believer should live and function to contribute to their growth and progress, in obedience to God, with the help and guidance of the Holy Spirit. For the growth and progress of the Church as well as of the spiritual life of Believers, maintaining discipline is essential. There are times when this discipline has to be enforced, and some harsh measures may also be required. One of the harsh disciplinary measures is excluding a stubborn and an errant Believer from the fellowship and excommunicating him from the Church because of his stubborn and unreasonable attitude. The Lord, in His Word, has given instructions about when and how this should be done.

Presently, we are looking at exclusion or excommunication because of personal differences and conflicts between Believers. or having differences with the Pastor or Church Elders; which is by far the most commonly seen reason for separation and segregation in the Churches. Very often the people having differences just decide to stay away from each other in the congregational activities, and they may even influence their own group to stay away or not communicate with the person that they have their differences with. The Pastors, Elders and some preachers and teachers of God’s Word often go one step further, and not only get this separation and segregation done in their own congregation, but also convey for this to be done in other congregations as well. Thus, the errant Believer, because of these people in leadership positions is effectively excluded or excommunicated, because of a personal action and not any Biblical action, without the God given process being followed. In the previous two articles we have seen that Biblically, there should be an utmost attempt at forgiveness of the errant Believer and reconciliation with him; and for this the responsibility for initiating and carrying through the process of reconciliation has been assigned by the Lord to the person who has been wronged, who has suffered because of the other Believers wrong-doings. So far, from Matthew 5:23-24 and Matthew 18:15-17a, we have seen the four steps of trying to have the differences resolved, problems sorted out, and reconciliation effected through the process given in God’s Word. Today, we will consider the fifth and final step, how to go about it when except for exclusion or excommunication, no other way is left.

The Lord Jesus in Matthew 18:17b, as a last resort, gives the permission to exclude from fellowship or excommunicate an errant Believer who has refused to listen to even the Church, but with a condition. The Lord has said, “But if he refuses even to hear the church, let him be to you like a heathen and a tax collector.” We see from the Lord’s statement that this final decision against the errant Believer, automatically follows his refusal to even listen to the Church and mend his ways; take note that the Lord has said “let him be to you” i.e., start seeing him that way, and not “start disciplinary proceedings against him to declare him…”. So, here, and this is very important to understand, that it is not a decision to be taken by any person or any committee, but it is stating the consequence of the failure of the collective effort of the Church, after the matter has been brought to the Church and the Church too has tried to have the matter solved; . Moreover, it is not a mere perfunctory informing of the Church by a Pastor or elder and then putting out the errant Believer; neither does the Lord say to put the matter to vote in the Church and go by the majority decision, nor does He specify the minimum vote percentage to have the action carried out. It is simply a de-facto action, where one of the two available options automatically gets activated; since the first part has not happened therefore, the second part automatically becomes operative; in this case, “...let him be to you like a heathen and a tax collector.” Since the errant Believer has refused to have the situation rectified despite all the opportunities given to him, and all given to him in a manner favorable to him, therefore now he will have to bear the consequences of being stubborn and non-conciliatory. There is something very important to note over here – as has been said in the earlier article, no man – none, whosoever, has the authority to meddle with the Body and Bride of the Lord Jesus, i.e., His Church, only He, and He alone decides what is to be done in and to His Church, no man can take this authority upon himself or act in accordingly. Here the Lord has given the order to be carried out; the Lord has not asked any man to take this decision on His behalf, therefore it is not any man’s responsibility to take this decision; all the people and the all of the Church congregation only have to obey and implement what the Lord has said.

Here is the Lord specified manner in which the errant Believer is to be treated now, at this stage – as a heathen and a tax-collector. Very commonly, this is taken to imply that the Lord is saying cut off all relationship, all communication with such a person, and put him away from the Church and the congregation. If this were so, then it would bring in a gross contradiction in God’s Word and His instructions, since it would tantamount to such a Believer being rejected from being a child of God, implying that salvation can be lost. Remember, everyone becomes a member of God’s Church and is brought into fellowship with God’s other children on being Born-Again into the family of God; and it is God who places the person in His Church and fellowship with His other children. A basic infallible fact of the Christian Faith is that salvation is eternal, it can never be lost, no matter what a person may do; and another absolute characteristic of God is that He is omniscient, knowing everything about everything, knowing the end from the beginning. To interpret the Lord’s statement as meaning to cast such a person away from the Church for doing some wrong means that the Lord is asking to make him cease being a child of God because of doing wrong. This in turn means losing salvation, and implying that God is not omniscient since he did not know what this person is going to do in the days to come after being saved, and so, God made a mistake in saving him, and it also means that salvation can be lost because of certain works. In other words, either both of these are untenable and unacceptable arguments, they are wrong and false; or God is not omniscient and makes errors in judgement, His Word is not infallible and unalterable, there are errors in His Word. See and understand how through this seemingly small and ordinary appearing things, Satan has attacked the very truth and fact of God; and by falling for this satanic trap, how the Believers end up denigrating God.

Therefore, the Lord’s statement of “let him be to you like a heathen and a tax collector” cannot mean cutting off all relationships and communication and putting him away from the Church and fellowship. So then, what does the Lord mean when He says this? We will consider and understand this in the next article. But for now, think of the magnitude of the transgression and accountability of those people, especially the Church Pastors, Elders, and the preachers and teachers of God’s Word, who take it upon themselves to separate away from the Church and fellowship some people with whom they have their differences, and even make other Believers follow their decisions to stay away from those persons – these Church leaders have fallen into this very serious transgression and sin, and have made their blind-followers to fall into it as well. Eventually when they stand before the Lord to given an account of their lives and ministries, both, the leader as well as their followers, will see so much loss of their eternal blessings because of following man and disobeying God; because in the garb of obeying God and His Word they actually chose to follow man’s sayings and their own human feelings.

Excommunication From the Church – 2

As God’s stewards of the Church and of maintaining fellowship with His children, where He has placed the Christian Believers, the Believers are to take decisions and act in a manner that will contribute to the growth of the Church and to the spiritual growth of the other Believers. We have seen that maintaining discipline in the Church and fellowship is important, and as God’s stewards, the Believers may have to take some difficult or harsh decisions to maintain this discipline. Since the last article we have started to learn what the Bible says about excluding or excommunicating an errant Believer from the Church and the fellowship. In the last article we have seen from the Lord Jesus’s instructions in the Sermon on the Mount, from Matthew 5:23-24, that in case of personal differences and problems with another Believer, the primary response of the one who has been wronged by another should be to emulate Lord Jesus Christ. Therefore, the first attempt should be to forgive and be reconciled with the offending brother; the one who has been hurt has been asked by the Lord to take the first step to do so, instead of waiting for the one did the wrong to come and ask for forgiveness and reconciliation. Today we will take up another passage from God’s Word to learn about the stages or steps to resolve seemingly irreconcilable personal differences between Believers.

The Lord Jesus in Matthew 18:15-17, has given another set of instructions for handling personal differences and discord amongst Believers and in the Church. In this passage, in each of the three verses, we see the successive steps to be taken to resolve the situation. In the last article, we had seen from Matthew 5:23-24 that the first response to resolve the situation is to come from the offended person, the one who has suffered being wronged. This wronged Believer has to act with the intention to be reconciled with the one who has caused the problems, and we had seen that for doing this there is no mention by the Lord of trying to discuss and settle the issue of who was at fault and why this situation has come about. This is the first step in resolving personal differences and problems between Believers affecting the Church and fellowship.

From Matthew 18:15 we see that the Lord has instructed: “Moreover if your brother sins against you, go and tell him his fault between you and him alone. If he hears you, you have gained your brother.” So, the manner of handling the situation has changed somewhat now, from what was instructed in Matthew 5:23-24. The offended person is till responsible for taking the first step; it is he who has to go to the one who created the problem, to settle the issue. Again, as in Matthew 5:23-24, this is to be done on a personal basis, the two involved persons getting together to sort out the issue, mutually. But now, the Lord is giving the offended person the instruction to go the offending person and “tell him his fault between you and him alone.” So now, once his initial attempt at reconciliation on the basis of ignoring the offense and going only by the principle of forgiveness and reconciliation has failed, the offended Believer now has the Lord’s authority to make another attempt, but this time by bringing up the cause of the problems, and discussing it mutually. But one needs to be very careful and patient here. Often, in such situations Satan sees to it that somehow this discussion soon degenerates into accusations, reviling, and trying to demean the other person; and the situation worsens instead of resolving. This aggravation from any side has not been permitted by the Lord. It still has to be done in love, with an intention to forgive and be reconciled, but with the additional advantage of using the opportunity to have the situation clarified to each other by both sides. So, this can be considered as the second step in disciplining an errant Believer, in handling a troublesome situation of personal differences adversely affecting the Church and fellowship – discuss and sort it out mutually. Keep it at a personal level, and this is not the time to involve others or influence them about the problem.

Then, in Matthew 18:16, we find written that “But if he will not hear, take with you one or two more, that 'by the mouth of two or three witnesses every word may be established',” if the problem remains unresolved, the Lord gives the next step – the offended Believer should take with him one or two more people, since they are to serve as “witnesses” for others, and as the next verse indicates, even try to serve as mediators to help resolve the situation, it is implied that these should be members of the Church and fellowship. In the presence of these “witnesses” and mediators, the offended Believer should once again try to discuss and resolve the situation. Once again, the initiation has to be done by the one who is offended; he has to arrange for the “witnesses”, and get them to serve as mediators. He has to arrange for the meeting, he has to try and make the offender understand and try to have him agree to have the situation sorted out. The only difference being that now he has “witnesses” to vouch for him that he has taken the initiative and has tried his utmost to have the problem sorted out and harmony restored, as well as others who can say that even they have tried to have the problem settled but to no avail. This can be considered as the third step in this process of resolving the troublesome situation of personal differences affecting the unity of the fellowship and of the Church.

The fourth step, from first part of Matthew 18:17 is, “And if he refuses to hear them, tell it to the church.” In the first part of this sentence, we have from the Lord “And if he refuses to hear them,” which clearly indicates that the aforementioned “witnesses” of verse 16 are meant to also participate in the discussions and try from their side to have the errant Believer come around to agreeing and have the situation resolved. Now comes the fourth step, “tell it to the church.” This is the stage, now is the time when the matter become public. The offended Believer, and his witnesses are to report the matter to the “Church.” Note that at the time the Lord made this statement, there was no “Church” as such. The Lord and His disciples were not gathering separately to worship, they still went to the Jewish synagogues and the Temple to worship on the sabbath day. But the Lord still uses this term, “Church” – i.e., at that moment, His group of people, the ones He had called out to His disciples, and from the future long-term point of view, the Church that would be established. There is another important thing to be noted here; the Lord is not saying to report the matter to a “select group of the disciples,” or, in the current context, to some Church committee, or only to the Pastor and Elders of the Church. The matter has to be brought before the whole Church, to the entire group of Believers, the entire fellowship of that local Church; and now the whole Church, the whole assembly of Believers has to try and have the matter resolved.

It is now, if the errant Believer still remains stubborn and does not agree to have the matter resolved, that the final step of exclusion or excommunication comes in, in the second half of this verse 17. This needs to be considered and analyzed in some detail. In the next article we will take it up from here, and see further about an errant Believer being excluded or excommunicated from the Church on grounds of stubbornly maintaining differences and discord with some other Believer.

Blessed and Successful Life / आशीषित एवं सफल जीवन – 163 – Stewards of The Church / कलीसिया के भण्डारी – 45

Excommunication From the Church – 1

God has made every Born-Again Christian Believer a member of His Church and has placed him in fellowship with His other children since the moment of his salvation. Therefore, every Born-Again Christian Believer is God’s steward in these positions and has the responsibility of functioning in a manner that causes the Church to grow and the other Believers to progress in their spiritual lives. In the previous articles we have seen about the role of the Elders and the fact that every Believer needs discipline; God, through instructions and examples in His Word has shown how this discipline needs to exercised. Sometimes, some stubborn and unrelenting Believer, or someone who has committed some very serious offence, may require a harsher discipline; or, a Church Elder or Pastor may develop irreconcilable differences with some member. Usually, in such situations that Believer is either excluded from the fellowship, or is excommunicated and cast out of the church and fellowship of the Believers, and it may be communicated to other members and other Churches or Assemblies, not to keep any fellowship with such Believer. While this may be the Elder’s, or the Pastor’s personal decision, but what does the Bible have to say for such a situation? Does God’s Word permit such an action to be taken? Are there any God given guidelines and instructions for such punishment to be prescribed?

We see in God’s Word that, to maintain Church discipline, the Lord has given the mechanisms, of how this should be done. The first step is dealing with the situation at a personal level in a spirit of forgiveness with the intention to be reconciled. If there are any mutual differences, or misunderstandings, then the first attempt should be for reconciliation and mutual brotherhood, as is the nature of God, and as the Lord has instructed to His disciples in His Sermon on the Mount, in Matthew 5:23-24. We see from this passage that the Lord is instructing that not the offender, but the offended, i.e., it is the suffering person who has to take the first step, the lead in trying to reach an agreement and for reconciliation with the offender. This shows that the one who has suffered and has been wronged, now he is willing to forgive and be reconciled with the one who has created the problems. Notice that in verse 24 here, the Lord is not saying for the one who has suffered the wrong to go and make the one who has created the problems realize what he has done and how he has caused the suffering; rather, the Lord’s instructions are simple and straightforward – “First be reconciled to your brother, and then come and offer your gift.” This clearly shows that the one who has created problems is to be taken as and treated as a “brother” – a brother in faith, or a brother in the Lord, i.e., a member of one’s family, the family of God, and is to be reconciled with. Reconciliation and forgiveness has to start from here, with the realization and acceptance of this unalterable and irrevocable relationship, that whatever he may have done, he is still my brother, he is still a part of my God given family. In the parable of the Prodigal Son given in Luke 15, the Father uses this perspective to try to make the elder brother come around to being reconciled. With this perspective as the starting point, the Believer has to go to the problem-creator with the intention of getting reconciled; and this can only happen if the Believer is willing to forgive and re-start the relationship.

This is exactly like what the Lord God has done with us, the sinful mankind. We sinned, we disobeyed God, we hurt God, we left Him and went into the world to live a life contrary to what He wants. But it was God, the one who was offended, who made the first move to reconcile us back with Him. It was He who left the glory and majesty he had in heaven, and came down; the offended came down to the offender in humility, to forgive and reconcile us with Himself. Now, that is what He expects us to do as well (Colossians 3:12-13). In teaching His disciples what is commonly known as “The Lord’s Prayer” the Lord had taught them to expect forgiveness from God as they forgive others (Matthew 6:12), and then immediately after the prayer, He reiterated the instruction and told the disciples of the consequences of their being unforgiving (Matthew 6:14-15). The Lord emphasized on being magnanimous in forgiving in His instructions to Peter (Matthew 18:21-22); as well as taught it in His parable of the unforgiving servant (Matthew 18:23-35).

So not exclusion or expulsion, but forgiveness and reconciliation in the spirit of being family and brotherhood should be the first course of action towards the offending Believers. In the next article we will look at the next step, the Lord outlined in Matthew 18:15-17.

Please forgive my sins, take me under your care, and make me your disciple. I submit my life into your hands." Your one prayer from a sincere and committed heart will make your present and future life, in this world and in the hereafter, heavenly and blessed for eternity.
