Excommunication From the Church – 5

Every Born-Again Christian Believer, being a steward of God for the provisions and privileges God has given him, will eventually also have to give an account to God for his stewardship, and will be rewarded by the Lord accordingly. As steward of the Church and fellowship in which God has placed him, the Believer has to ensure the growth of the Church and spiritual progress of the other Believers in the fellowship. For these to happen, the maintaining of discipline in the Church and fellowship is very important; and for maintaining discipline some harsh measures may also be required at times. Presently, from, Matthew 5:23-24 and Matthew 18:15-17 we have been considering the exclusion and excommunication of a stubborn, unrelenting Believer persisting in maintaining his differences and conflicts with some other Believers or Church leaders, and refusing to listen to anyone for correcting himself.

In the last article we have seen what the Lord Jesus meant when he said for such an errant Believer, “let him be to you like a heathen and a tax collector” and we also saw that no man, whoever he may be in the Church or fellowship, can decide about excommunicating him. It is only the Lord’s decision, and we are to only abide by it, implement it. In the preceding articles we have seen that this whole process of disciplining an errant Believer reflects the love, nature, and behavior of the Lord, and of His being omniscient about everyone - from before their birth to after their death. Analyzing the Lord’s statement in its context and through the practices of the Jewish society of that time, we have seen that the statement does not mean to totally cut-off all contact and relationships with the errant Believer and cast him away from the Church, but minimizing socially mingling with him to make him feel humiliated, ashamed, and isolated, so that he may repent of his wrong doings. Today we will consider this a bit further, and see some other associated points about this.

Once the situation has come to the point when there is no other alternative left, but to separate out such a person, God’s Word also shows that this separation should be moderated. The purpose of the exercise is not to totally cut-off the person and that too permanently, but to bring him to realization and repentance. Bringing the errant back into the Church should always be aimed for through forgiveness and reconciliation, as is the nature of God, and as we have seen earlier also when considering Matthew 5:23-24. This is not just in the New Testament, in this period of grace, but was also seen in the Old Testament, in the period of the Law; please see 2 Samuel 14:1-24. We see here, in the incidence of Absalom and David, how the wise woman from Tekoa talks to King David about a characteristic of God relevant to the situation at hand, “For we will surely die and become like water spilled on the ground, which cannot be gathered up again. Yet God does not take away a life; but He devises means, so that His banished ones are not expelled from Him” (2 Samuel 14:14). Once again, we see that God, the offended one, the one against whom the wrongs have been committed, and the one who is aggrieved party, “He devises means, so that His banished ones are not expelled from Him” – God banished, but God takes the initiative to devise means for the offender to be reconciled with Him.

And Paul, under the Holy Spirit has also said the same in 2 Thessalonians 3:14-15 – “And if anyone does not obey our word in this epistle, note that person and do not keep company with him, that he may be ashamed. Yet do not count him as an enemy, but admonish him as a brother.” God has had it written very clearly in His Word that the purpose of not keeping company with a disobedient Believer is to bring him to shame – what we have been learning above and in the previous articles. Along with this, God’s related instructions for further behavior towards this disobedient person are also clear and important – treat and admonish him as a brother, not as an enemy. Once again emphasizing what we have been seeing in the previous articles that no truly Born-Again Believer, i.e., a member of God’s Church, His family, a part of the Body and Bride of Christ Jesus can ever be absolutely cut-off and cast-off from the Church and fellowship. God does not do it, and no man, despite his standing and reputation in the Church or fellowship, has any authority or permission to do it. Rather, after an appropriate period of time, there should be active efforts, initiated by the offended parties, by the Church, to bring this person back into fellowship and be restored in the Church and fellowship.

We see this again from Paul’s example in 2 Corinthians 2:5-10. It seems, from this passage, that someone in the Corinthian Church had said or done something against Paul, and his actions had not only grieved Paul, but also a good number of people in that Church; and then they on their own had decided to put him away from the fellowship. The text neither suggests that Paul had raised the matter of that man’s being offensive towards him in the Church, nor does it say that Paul asked them to do what they did. They, it seems, had acted on their own in this matter; remember that this was a time when the New Testament had not been written, and people were prone to do things according to their own understanding. Now, when the news of what had been done reached Paul, he acted in the spirit of 2 Samuel 14:14, he devised a way to get the person restored back into the fellowship. Paul tells the Church in Corinth that he has forgiven him and asks them all to also forgive and comfort that person, and restore him back to fellowship. Paul does not order them to do this, he only proposes it to the Church in Corinth, leaving the decision in their hands A very important thing to note from this incidence is that the like excommunication, the restoration too has to be through the Church congregation, done in the will of the Church, and not by the personal decision of an individual. Though Paul, at a personal level, is not holding any grudge against that person, has forgiven him, yet, despite his status and reputation, he still wants the Church to be involved in the forgiveness and restoration of that errant person; instead of imposing his own personal decision upon them.

To summarize, in matters of personal differences and conflicts between the Believers, even if these differences are with the Church leaders, God has instructed in His Word that the offended person has to take the initiative and have the matter resolved in a spirit of forgiveness and reconciliation. If the matter is not resolved at the personal level, it should be tried through meditation of one or two others from the Church; and if even they fail, it should be brought to the notice of the Church congregation, and if the errant Believer refuses to listen to even the Church, only then is he to be separated from the general company and socializing of the community, to make him feel ashamed and repent of his wrongs. But at no point of time, is he to be considered totally and permanently cut-off and cast-away from the Church and fellowship, or an enemy. No man has the authority or permission to put anyone out of the Church and fellowship; it has to be done only through the process given by God. Moreover, the intention should still remain to bring the errant one back into fellowship, and the offended person, in the spirit of forgiveness and reconciliation, ought to devise means to have him restored back into fellowship in the Church.

In the next article, we will see some instructions in God’s Word for Believers to withdraw themselves from certain persons, for some given reasons.

If you have not yet accepted the discipleship of the Lord, make your decision in favor of the Lord Jesus now to ensure your eternal life and heavenly blessings. Where there is obedience to the Lord, where there is respect and obedience to His Word, there is also the blessing and protection of the Lord. Voluntarily repent of your sins and ask the Lord Jesus for forgiveness of your sins; voluntarily and sincerely surrender yourself to Him - is the only way to salvation and heavenly life. You only have to say a short but sincere prayer to the Lord Jesus Christ willingly and with a penitent heart, and at the same time completely commit and submit your life to Him. You can also make this prayer and submission in words something like, “Lord Jesus, I am sorry for my sins and repent of them. I thank you for taking my sins upon yourself, paying for them through your life.  Because of them you died on the cross in my place, were buried, and you rose again from the grave on the third day for my salvation, and today you are the living Lord God and have freely provided to me the forgiveness, and redemption from my sins, through faith in you. Please forgive my sins, take me under your care, and make me your disciple. I submit my life into your hands." Your one prayer from a sincere and committed heart will make your present and future life, in this world and in the hereafter, heavenly and blessed for eternity.

Excommunication From the Church – 2

In whichever Church God has placed the Christian Believers, the Believers are to strive to function as God's stewards in that Church and to maintain fellowship with His children there. Therefore, they must take decisions and act in a manner that will contribute to the growth of the Church and to the spiritual growth of the other Believers. We have seen that maintaining discipline and maintaining fellowship in the Church is important, and as God’s stewards, the Believers may have to take some difficult or harsh decisions to maintain this discipline. Since the last article we have started to learn what the Bible says about excluding or excommunicating an errant Believer from the Church and the fellowship. In the last article we have seen from the Lord Jesus’s instructions in the Sermon on the Mount, from Matthew 5:23-24, that in case of personal differences and problems with another Believer, the primary response of the one who has been wronged by another should be to emulate Lord Jesus Christ, and take the initiative for reconciliation. Therefore, the first step should be to forgive and be reconciled with the offending brother; i.e., the one who has been hurt has been asked by the Lord to take the first step to do so, instead of waiting for the one who did the wrong to come and ask for forgiveness and reconciliation. Today we will take up another passage from God’s Word to learn about the stages or steps to resolve seemingly irreconcilable personal differences between Believers.

The Lord Jesus in Matthew 18:15-17, has given another set of instructions for handling personal differences and discord amongst Believers and in the Church. In this passage, in each of the three verses, we see the successive steps to be taken to resolve the situation. In the last article, we had seen from Matthew 5:23-24 that the first response to resolve the situation is to come from the offended person, the one who has suffered being wronged. This wronged Believer has to act with the intention to be reconciled with the one who has caused the problems, and we had seen that for doing this there is no mention by the Lord of trying to discuss and settle the issue of who was at fault and why this situation has come about. This is the first step in resolving personal differences and problems between Believers affecting the Church and fellowship. This is a practical emulation of what God did to reconcile us with Him. Though He was the offended party, when man sinned, yet He took the initiative for reconciliation, emptied Himself of His glory and majesty, and came down to sinful man, and did all that was required to have man return into fellowship with Him.

From Matthew 18:15 we see that the Lord has instructed: “Moreover if your brother sins against you, go and tell him his fault between you and him alone. If he hears you, you have gained your brother.” So, the manner of handling the situation has changed somewhat now, from what was instructed in Matthew 5:23-24. The offended person is still responsible for taking the first step; it is he who has to go to the one who created the problem, to settle the issue. Again, as in Matthew 5:23-24, this is to be done on a personal basis, the two involved persons getting together to sort out the issue, mutually. But now, the Lord is giving the offended person the instruction to go to the offending person and “tell him his fault between you and him alone.” So now, once his initial attempt at reconciliation on the basis of ignoring the offense and going only by the principle of forgiveness and reconciliation has failed, the offended Believer now has the Lord’s authority to make another attempt, but this time by bringing up the cause of the problems, and discussing it mutually. But one needs to be very careful and patient here. Often, in such situations Satan sees to it that somehow this discussion soon degenerates into accusations, reviling, and trying to demean the other person; and the situation worsens instead of resolving. Such an aggravation from any side has not been permitted by the Lord. It still has to be done in love, with an intention to forgive and be reconciled, but with the additional advantage of using the opportunity to have the situation clarified to each other by both sides. So, this can be considered as the second step in disciplining an errant Believer, in handling a troublesome situation of personal differences adversely affecting the Church and fellowship – discuss and sort it out mutually. Keep it at a personal level, and this is not the time to involve others or influence them about the problem.

Then, in Matthew 18:16, we find written that “But if he will not hear, take with you one or two more, that 'by the mouth of two or three witnesses every word may be established',” if the problem remains unresolved, the Lord gives the next step – the offended Believer should take with him one or two more people, since they are to serve as “witnesses” for others, and as the next verse indicates, even try to serve as mediators to help resolve the situation, it is implied that these should be members of the Church and fellowship. In the presence of these “witnesses” and mediators, the offended Believer should once again try to discuss and resolve the situation. Once again, the initiative has to be from the one who is offended; he has to arrange for the “witnesses”, and get them to serve as mediators. He has to arrange for the meeting, he has to try and make the offender understand and try to have him agree to have the situation sorted out. The only difference being that now he has “witnesses” to vouch for him that he has taken the initiative and has tried his utmost to have the problem sorted out and harmony restored, as well as others who can say that even they have tried to have the problem settled but to no avail. This can be considered as the third step in this process of resolving the troublesome situation of personal differences affecting the unity of the fellowship and of the Church.

The fourth step, from the first part of Matthew 18:17 is, “And if he refuses to hear them, tell it to the church.” In the first part of this sentence, we have from the Lord “And if he refuses to hear them,” which clearly indicates that the aforementioned “witnesses” of verse 16 are meant to also participate in the discussions and try from their side to have the errant Believer come around to agreeing and have the situation resolved. Now comes the fourth step, “tell it to the church.” This is the stage, now is the time when the matter becomes public. The offended Believer, and his witnesses are to report the matter to the “Church.” Note that at the time the Lord made this statement, there was no “Church” as such. The Lord and His disciples were not gathering separately to worship, they still went to the Jewish synagogues and the Temple to worship on the sabbath day. But the Lord still uses this term, “Church” – i.e., at that moment, His group of people, the ones He had called out to be His disciples, and from the future long-term point of view, the Church that would be established. There is another important thing to be noted here; the Lord is not saying to report the matter to a “select group of the disciples,” or, in the current context, to some Church committee, or only to the Pastor and Elders of the Church. The matter has to be brought before the whole Church, to the entire group of Believers, the entire fellowship of that local Church; and now the whole Church, the whole assembly of Believers has to try and have the matter resolved.

It is now, if the errant Believer still remains stubborn and does not agree to have the matter resolved, that the final step of exclusion or excommunication comes in, in the second half of this verse 17. This needs to be considered and analyzed in some detail. In the next article we will take it up from here, and see further about an errant Believer being excluded or excommunicated from the Church on grounds of stubbornly maintaining differences and discord with some other Believer.

If you have not yet accepted the discipleship of the Lord, make your decision in favor of the Lord Jesus now to ensure your eternal life and heavenly blessings. Where there is obedience to the Lord, where there is respect and obedience to His Word, there is also the blessing and protection of the Lord. Voluntarily repent of your sins and ask the Lord Jesus for forgiveness of your sins, voluntarily and sincerely, surrender yourself to Him - is the only way to salvation and heavenly life.

For these to happen, the maintaining of discipline in the Church and fellowship is very important; and while maintaining discipline some harsh measures may also be required at times. In the last article we have seen what the Lord Jesus meant when he said for such an errant Believer, “let him be to you like a heathen and a tax collector” and we also saw that no man, whoever he may be in the Church or fellowship, can decide doing this. It is the Lord’s decision, and we are to only abide by it, implement it. Analysing the Lord’s statement in its context and through the practices of the Jewish society of that time, we have seen that it does not mean to totally cut-off all contact and relationships with the errant Believer and cast him away from the Church, but minimizing socially mingling with him to make him feel humiliated, ashamed, and isolated, so that he may repent of his wrong doings.

It seems, from this passage, that someone in the Corinthian Church had said or done something against Paul, and his actions had not only grieved Paul, but also a good number of people in that Church, and they on their own had decided to put him away from the fellowship. Now, by the time the news of what has been done reaches Paul, he acts in the spirit of 2 Samuel 14:14, he devises a way to get the person restored back in fellowship. Paul tells the Church in Corinth that he has forgiven him and asks them all to also forgive and comfort that person, and restore him back to fellowship. Paul does not order them to do this, he only proposes it to the Church in Corinth, leaving the decision in their hands A very important thing to note from this incidence is that the like excommunication, the restoration too has to be through the Church congregation, done in the will of the Church, and not by an individual. Though Paul, at a personal level, is not holding any grudge against that person, has forgiven him, yet, despite his status and reputation, he still wants the Church to be involved in the forgiveness and restoration of that errant person.

To summarize, in matters of personal differences and conflicts between the Believers, even if these differences are with the Church leaders, God has instructed in His Word that the offended person has to take the initiative and have the matter resolved in a spirit of forgiveness and reconciliation. If the matter is not resolved at the personal level, it should be tried through one or two others; and if even they fail, it should be brought to the notice of the Church congregation, and if the errant Believer refuses to listen to even the Church, only then is he to be separated from the general company and socializing of the community, to make him feel ashamed and repent of his wrongs.

In the next article, we will see some instructions in God’s Word for Believer’s to withdraw themselves from certain persons, for some given reasons.

If you have not yet accepted the discipleship of the Lord, make your decision in favor of the Lord Jesus now to ensure your eternal life and heavenly blessings. Where there is obedience to the Lord, where there is respect and obedience to His Word, there is also the blessing and protection of the Lord. Repenting of your sins, and asking the Lord Jesus for forgiveness of your sins, voluntarily and sincerely, surrendering yourself to Him - is the only way to salvation and heavenly life.

As God’s stewards of the Church and of maintaining fellowship with His children, where He has placed the Christian Believers, the Believers are to take decisions and act in a manner that will contribute to the growth of the Church and to the spiritual growth of the other Believers. We have seen that maintaining discipline in the Church and fellowship is important, and as God’s stewards, the Believers may have to take some difficult or harsh decisions to maintain this discipline. Since the last article we have started to learn what the Bible says about excluding or excommunicating an errant Believer from the Church and the fellowship. In the last article we have seen from the Lord Jesus’s instructions in the Sermon on the Mount, from Matthew 5:23-24, that in case of personal differences and problems with another Believer, the primary response of the one who has been wronged by another should be to emulate Lord Jesus Christ. Therefore, the first attempt should be to forgive and be reconciled with the offending brother; the one who has been hurt has been asked by the Lord to take the first step to do so, instead of waiting for the one did the wrong to come and ask for forgiveness and reconciliation.

The offended person is till responsible for taking the first step; it is he who has to go to the one who created the problem, to settle the issue. Again, as in Matthew 5:23-24, this is to be done on a personal basis, the two involved persons getting together to sort out the issue, mutually. But now, the Lord is giving the offended person the instruction to go the offending person and “tell him his fault between you and him alone.” So now, once his initial attempt at reconciliation on the basis of ignoring the offense and going only by the principle of forgiveness and reconciliation has failed, the offended Believer now has the Lord’s authority to make another attempt, but this time by bringing up the cause of the problems, and discussing it mutually. But one needs to be very careful and patient here. Often, in such situations Satan sees to it that somehow this discussion soon degenerates into accusations, reviling, and trying to demean the other person; and the situation worsens instead of resolving. This aggravation from any side has not been permitted by the Lord.

Once again, the initiation has to be done by the one who is offended; he has to arrange for the “witnesses”, and get them to serve as mediators.

The fourth step, from first part of Matthew 18:17 is, “And if he refuses to hear them, tell it to the church.” In the first part of this sentence, we have from the Lord “And if he refuses to hear them,” which clearly indicates that the aforementioned “witnesses” of verse 16 are meant to also participate in the discussions and try from their side to have the errant Believer come around to agreeing and have the situation resolved. Now comes the fourth step, “tell it to the church.” This is the stage, now is the time when the matter become public. But the Lord still uses this term, “Church” – i.e., at that moment, His group of people, the ones He had called out to His disciples, and from the future long-term point of view, the Church that would be established.

Repenting of your sins, and asking the Lord Jesus for forgiveness of your sins, voluntarily and sincerely, surrendering yourself to Him - is the only way to salvation and heavenly life.
