The Elementary Principles – 99

God’s Forgiveness and Justice – 5

The Effects, Results and Rewards of Sin - 2

In our study on “Eternal Judgment,” the sixth of the elementary principles given in Hebrews 6:1-2, we have seen that Biblically, this final judgment will be of the saved, the Born-Again Christian Believers, so that they may receive the rewards and consequences of all that they have done and kept in their hearts since their being saved. Those who do not accept this, point out Bible verses that show that God forgives sin, casts it behind His back and forgets it; on this basis they argue that there is no way that the forgiven sins will ever be exposed and taken up for judgment. While it is true that God forgives and forgets, yet it is also true that He has ordained in His eternal, infallible, inerrant, unchanging, and unchangeable Word that everything that every Believer has done or kept in his heart, whether good or bad, will be brought out and evaluated. To understand how there is no contradiction in God’s forgiving and forgetting sins, and also that everything, even the forgiven and forgotten sins will be brought out, and how these two lines of thought instead of contradicting each other, only complement each other, we have said that we need to understand what happened in the Garden of Eden when the first sin was committed. Since this topic of Sin and Salvation has already been discussed in detail in an earlier series, therefore we are not going into any details, but only considering the main issues relevant to our topic very briefly. We had begun to see about the effects, results, and consequences of sin in the last article, and had seen what sin and death mean Biblically; and today we will carry on from where we left in the previous article.

The readers are requested to read Genesis chapter 3 from the Bible, to see what all happened soon after Adam and Eve sinned by eating the forbidden fruit; unlike what many think and believe, the sin was not in the fruit, but the sin was breaking God’s command by eating the fruit. God had commanded that the fruit of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil was not to be eaten. By falling for Satan’s deception, and eating the forbidden fruit, Adam and Eve broke God’s Law; and lawlessness, i.e., transgression of God’s Law is sin (I John 3:4). With the entry of sin into creation and mankind, some other things also happened. From the moment man sinned, his fellowship with God was broken because of sin; he died spiritually from that instant, and from that moment onwards, he was also condemned to die physically, we have seen this in the previous article. So, death came to them in two ways - spiritually i.e., they were separated from the company of God; And physically they started to die, and eventually died on completing their life-time, returning back to dust. This condition has remained with every human being since then; he is born in a state of being spiritually separated from God, and physically with a day by day decreasing age, dies at the end of his life-time, and eventually turns into dust "Therefore, just as through one man sin entered the world, and death through sin, and thus death spread to all men, because all sinned" (Romans 5:12). Here we see that the immediate and primary effect of sin i.e., death – spiritual and physical, not just for Adam and Eve, but for all of mankind.

Then, lifelong pain, toil, problems, in various forms and intensity, till death were imposed on Adam and Eve; and this would get passed on into their generations. After their talk with God, they were thrown out of the Garden of Eden, the place of blessing and fellowshipping with God, and any possibility of their coming back into that place of peace and divine fellowship was prevented (Genesis 3:24). As the subsequent chapters show, God did not stop caring for Adam and Eve, or for mankind. He continued to meet their needs, help them, guide them; and even today, he still looks after and cares for the godly as well as the ungodly (Matthew 5:45). But despite all the help and care of God, Adam and Eve or their children could never return to the Garden of Eden or to the fellowship with God which they had before sin entered. Despite God’s help and care, they had to toil, suffer pain and heartbreak, and various other problems. (In one sentence – salvation through coming to faith in the Lord Jesus, reverses this state, restores man’s relationship with God and assures him of eternal life in His company after he is freed from this sinful physical body.) As Adam and Eve could never get back into the Garden of Eden in their sinful bodies, similarly we see all around us, that even after being Born-Again, or sins being forgiven and forgotten by God, our fellowship with God being restored, yet the results because of that first sin still continue to affect mankind, as long as they are in this sinful physical body. And, no one will enter heaven in this sinful body, but every Christian Believer will be changed into a heavenly body and then be taken into heaven (1 Corinthians 15:51-54).

And the third thing related to the entry of sin into the world, is our current topic – the rewards and consequences that await every Born-Again Believer, once he reaches his eternal home in heaven, “But as it is written: "Eye has not seen, nor ear heard, Nor have entered into the heart of man The things which God has prepared for those who love Him” (1 Corinthians 2:9). These are things that we will only know and understand when we reach there. This sinful mind and body are incapable of grasping anything about those glorious eternal rewards and consequences that God has kept ready for us.

We will carry on from here in the next article.

If you have not yet accepted the discipleship of the Lord, make your decision in favor of the Lord Jesus now to ensure your eternal life and heavenly blessings. Where there is obedience to the Lord, where there is respect and obedience to His Word, there is also the blessing and protection of the Lord. Repenting of your sins, and asking the Lord Jesus for forgiveness of your sins, voluntarily and sincerely, surrendering yourself to Him - is the only way to salvation and heavenly life. You only have to say a short but sincere prayer to the Lord Jesus Christ willingly and with a penitent heart, and at the same time completely commit and submit your life to Him. You can also make this prayer and submission in words something like, “Lord Jesus, I am sorry for my sins and repent of them. I thank you for taking my sins upon yourself, paying for them through your life.  Because of them you died on the cross in my place, were buried, and you rose again from the grave on the third day for my salvation, and today you are the living Lord God and have freely provided to me the forgiveness, and redemption from my sins, through faith in you. Please forgive my sins, take me under your care, and make me your disciple. I submit my life into your hands." Your one prayer from a sincere and committed heart will make your present and future life, in this world and in the hereafter, heavenly and blessed for eternity.

The Elementary Principles – 98

God’s Forgiveness and Justice – 4

The Effects, Results and Rewards of Sin - 1

In the preceding articles on “Eternal Judgment,” the sixth elementary principle of Hebrews 6:1-2 we have seen that the Word God, the Bible is very clear that this final judgment will be of the Christian Believers, will be carried out by the Lord Jesus, and everything, whether good or bad that the Believer has done or kept in heart, will laid open, and judged, to give everyone the rewards and consequences of the Christian lives they have lived since salvation. But for most Christians this is something very difficult to accept, especially that everything about them, including that in their hearts, and the sins that they have confessed and asked forgiveness for, will also be laid open for this judgment. In defense of their objections, they show verses from God’s Word that say that God forgives and forgets sin, throwing the sins behind His back. We have mentioned these verses in the earlier articles, and have said that these verses need to be seen and interpreted in their context – not just the immediate one, but also the remote context of related verses and passages, at other places in the Bible. When these verses about God’s forgiveness and forgetting sin are seen in the proper context, there remains no contradiction, rather the verses complement God’s judgment, and affirm the integrity of God’s Word. The very sad and unfortunate consequence of the prevalent incomplete understanding and interpretation of these verses is that they have been misused as a license to sin – we have seen about it in the earlier articles. To understand the proper context and then to correctly interpret and understand these verses, we need to understand what happened in the Garden of Eden along with the committing of the first sin. This topic has been considered in detail in an earlier series on sin and salvation in this blog, but from today we will consider very briefly the points relevant to our present consideration.

God created man in His image and gave him dominion over everything on earth (Genesis 1:26-29). God planted a garden specifically for man, and besides the other trees, also put the tree of life and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil in the midst of the garden (Genesis 2:7-9).  Man was permitted to eat the fruits of every tree except for the fruit of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil; God warned man that if he eats the forbidden fruit, he will die (Genesis 2:15-17). Quite unlike the popular misconception about eating the forbidden fruit and dying, in the original Hebrew language it is not written that God said man would die immediately on eating the fruit; that “immediately” is not said even in the English translations of the Bible, and actually is an inaccurate extrapolation of the text. What the actual sentence in Hebrew language means is that from the time man ate the fruit, he will begin to die, i.e., the process of his succumbing to death and returning to dust will get initiated, i.e., from the moment he disobeys God and eats that fruit. And that has what has been happening since then, every person begins to die at the moment of his birth, and eventually, after a certain time this process of dying is completed and the person dies, then turns back into dust. The death was not in the fruit; the death was in the disobedience of God’s commandment given to man. This brings us to two key words that we need to understand – sin and death.

In short, the Bible states that the violation of God’s commandments, the transgression of His Law is sin. This Law includes His Ten Commandments (Exodus 20:1–20), and the Two Great Commandments (Matthew 22:35–40) upon which all of God's Commandments and all the instructions and the teachings given by Him through His prophets are based, “Whoever commits sin also commits lawlessness, and sin is lawlessness" (1 John 3:4). Secondly, every kind of iniquity or unrighteousness is sin, “All unrighteousness is sin …” (1 John 5:17), in whatever manner, under whatever circumstances, for whatever purpose this may have been done, by any person. According to the Bible, being in sin is a state of the mind. Sin lives in, and has its roots in the heart or mind of man. Its outward manifestations have their origin the heart or mind of man, then in conducive circumstances and a favorable time it manifests itself externally in various kinds of ‘sinful’ bodily actions, or in feelings, and thoughts kept in one’s mind.

Death means a humanly irreversible separation; irreversible both in terms of human capabilities and context, i.e., an irreversible and permanent disassociation or separation. The same thing is also expressed in figurative language to express the breaking of relationship permanently; when a person says to another "from today you have died for me", it means that the relationship between them has so irreversibly and permanently ended, as if it was death that has separated them. Biblically, death can be of two kinds – physical and spiritual. When a person dies physically, he is so permanently separated from his relatives, friends, family members, and everyone in the world, that he cannot return or be brought back by any human effort; his body and soul are separated from each other. Spiritual death is the separation of man’s spirit from the communion and fellowship man had with God in the Garden of Eden, before man sinned. Salvation is the restoration of this communion and fellowship of man with God, through the atoning work of the Lord Jesus Christ on the Cross of Calvary. Because of the sin of disobedience towards God, committed by Adam and Eve, this fellowship between God and man was broken, and man came under the condemnation of death, i.e., of being eternally separated from God forever. Without clearly understanding this very important and fundamental fact, it is impossible to grasp the Biblical understanding of salvation, and our topic of God forgiving and forgetting sins.

We will carry on from here and see how sin affected man and his relationship with God in the next article.

The Elementary Principles – 97

God’s Forgiveness and Justice – 3

In context of the “Eternal Judgment,” the sixth elementary principle given in Hebrews 6:1-2, we have seen that this last and final judgment will be of the Christian Believers; to ascertain their rewards and the consequences of their Christian lives they have lived since the time of their salvation. We have seen that God’s Word the Bible makes it quite clear that every aspect of every Believer will be laid open, even the hidden things in the hearts, to be judged for their rewards by the Lord Jesus. This is a hard thing for many to accept, despite Scriptural evidence in its favor. Even more difficult for the Christian Believers to accept is the Biblical fact that everything they have done, or had in their hearts – good or bad will be brought out to be judged. The most common argument against their accepting this Biblical fact are the Bible verses that say that God forgives sin, throws them behind His back, and forgets them; and whenever we acknowledge our sins, God is ready to forgive and restore us – verses we have already seen in the previous two articles. On the basis of these verses, they argue that the sins that God has forgiven and forgotten, how can they be brought out now; for that will go against the meaning or forgiving and forgetting. We will be examining the application of these verses in context of other Scriptural passages, to see what they actually imply; and how they do not contradict the concept of judgment, but complements it.

In the last article we have seen how, those who hold on to the sins forgiven and forgotten by God concept have turned God’s forgiving and forgetting into a license to sin; which it actually is not, but it is taken as a license because of a faulty understanding and application of those verses. But if these verses do not actually imply their notion, and what they assume and believe is not true, then they have a very serious problem in hand, ahead of them at judgment time, since their every misuse of God’s forgiveness and forgetting will have to be explained, accounted for, and all that they did will have an effect on their eternal rewards, will have consequences on their eternal life in heaven.

Another line of argument that the Believers holding on to the sins forgiven and forgotten by God concept is that the judgment will be of those sins that a person has either committed unknowingly and therefore did not confess and apologize for them, or forgot to confess and apologize for, or landed in some situation which did not let him confess and apologize those sins. So, it is these unconfessed and unforgiven sins is that will be judged; and not whatever good or bad any person has done since salvation, all of that will be judged. But this line or argument is Scripturally unacceptable because, firstly, the passages we already have considered in this context like 1 Corinthians 3:13-15 and 2 Corinthians 5:10, etc., make no mention of circumstantially unconfessed sins in these verses and passages. They are very clear and to the point that not certain specified kinds of things, but everything, all things, will be brought out and laid open for judgment. Therefore, to bring in this thinking of only those sins being judged, which somehow, for whatever seemingly plausible reason, went unconfessed, is adding into God’s Word, and manipulating it, giving it meanings that are neither there in the text, nor were ever intended to be in the text. Doing this by itself is a sin (Deuteronomy 4:2; 12:32; Proverbs 30:6; Revelation 22:18-19), that has very serious and harmful consequences.

Secondly, those who hold to this argument, need to ponder on the implication of this argument, that on being saved or Born-Again, while the Lord Jesus forgave all the sins committed by that person till that moment of his salvation; but after that it is every saved person’s responsibility to maintain their salvation, they have to keep seeking forgiveness every time they sin. But this is makes one’s salvation dependent not upon the grace of God and the work of the Lord, but on the work of man of confessing and asking forgiveness. This is unBiblical, because the Lord Jesus through His sacrifice on the Cross of Calvary paid in full for all the sins of all of mankind, for all the sins that mankind had ever committed or would ever commit. That means all the sins the Believer may commit from his first breath to his last breath on earth, have already been forgiven in God’s eyes because of the Lord’s atoning sacrifice on the Cross. Also, the Lord Jesus is our advocate, interceding for us before God against the accusations of Satan (1 John 2:1-2). Therefore, despite even the Believer’s sinning, they still remain without condemnation and saved. Therefore, this interpretation, that the judgment will be of unconfessed sins whose forgiveness has not been asked, is incorrect; it is inconsistent with the other related passages of the Bible, and needs to be corrected.

But it also brings us back to the earlier question, if sin has been forgiven and forgotten, then how come it will all be brought out, laid open and judged? As we said earlier, to understand this, and the correct application of the verses that show sins being forgiven, forgotten, and thrown behind God’s back, we first need to see what all happened with sin’s entry into the world. From the next article we will start considering things that happened with the first sin in the Garden of Eden.

The Elementary Principles – 96

God’s Forgiveness and Justice – 2

From the last article, we have begun considering a very important aspect of the sixth elementary principle given in Hebrews 6:1-2, i.e., “Eternal Judgment.” We have seen from various passages and examples from God’s Word the Bible that this final and eternal judgment will be of the Christian Believers, to give them their rewards and consequences, based upon the Christian life they have lived after salvation. And we have also seen that everything good or bad in their lives will be thoroughly and minutely examined, nothing will escape, and the Lord Jesus’s judgment about them will be flawless. For most Christians, this is a difficult concept to accept that the Believers will be judged, since the general tendency and thinking associate with “judgment” is that it is the sinners and unsaved who need to be, and only they will be judged. Far more difficult for the Christians, especially the Born-Again Christian Believers, to accept is the contention that everything good or bad that they have done, will be laid open and judged. That the good they have done will be evaluated for the rewards they will get is understandable; but that even the ‘bad’ i.e., all that is unacceptable in the Lord’s eyes, in other words that which was sinful, even the forgiven sins, will also be judged becomes something practically impossible for them to accept, despite passages like 2 Corinthians 5:10 and 1 Corinthians 3:13-15 making this very clear.

Their firm belief is that their sins will never be judged, because they are very sure that there is simply no way that the sins that they have confessed and prayed to be forgiven, which they may even have “covered in the blood of the Lord Jesus” can ever, anyhow, be opened up for judgment. To justify this belief they quote Biblical verses that we have seen in the last article, saying that God wipes away sins like clouds, throws them behind His back, never remembers them, verses like Isaiah 38:17; 43:25; 44:22; 1 John 1:9. And the very sad and unfortunate fact is that these verses and their misinterpretation is used by most Christian Believers, even the elders, preachers, and teachers as a license to sin, and also teach others the same. They sin, enjoy its pleasures, utilize the worldly gains of that sin, and then go and confess their sins, and some claim to cover their sin in the blood of Lord Jesus, His ask for forgiveness for it. Thus they feel that they have become clean and pure; the sin is forgiven, forgotten, and thrown away by God, never to be remembered again. And the next time around, as and when required, the same process of sinning – enjoying and utilizing it – confessing - asking forgiveness for it is repeated all over again. This is done on the grounds that once they confess and ask forgiveness, everything will be cleaned up by God according to His Word (1 John 1:9), and they can go to back to being normal with God in their lives. Thereby they make a mockery of the forgiveness and forgetting of God. In the coming articles we will consider the verses and the interpretation that is used to justify and propagate such unBiblical attitude, behavior, and practice; and which also leads many others into making the same mistake.

There is another related explanation that these Believers offer for the thorough scrutiny of all things, whether good or bad, stated in 1 Corinthians 3:13-15 and 2 Corinthians 5:10. They say that the judgment mentioned in these and other related verses, will be of the sins that a person fails to confess and ask forgiveness for. Their thinking is that a person may forget having sinned, or not realize that they may unknowingly have sinned in some manner, or the person may have gone into a medical condition or some other such situation that did not allow them to confess those sins and ask forgiveness for them, etc. So, it will be these and similar unconfessed sins whose forgiveness was missed out due to some reason or the other, that will be judged; but the sins that have been confessed and forgiveness asked for them are forever cleaned out, so will never be judged. But this line of thinking goes against some very well-established Biblical facts and doctrinal things related to salvation and forgiveness of sins.

We will see this in the next article, before we start considering the entry of sin in the Garden of Eden.
