Teachings Related to the Gospel – 29

We are presently studying some Biblical teachings about the gospel, the power of God to salvation for everyone who believes (Romans 1:15-16). Satan knows this power of the gospel very well, therefore he tries his utmost to prevent the gospel from being used in the Biblical manner it should be used, to keep it from being effective and bring people to salvation. In the previous articles we have seen the various ways through which Satan induces people to pervert the gospel. Satan prevents the gospel from being effective by inducing people to pervert it, by using their wisdom, understanding, and the circumstances at hand to alter it by adding something to it, or taking something away from it. Another of his methods is to spread false teachings about the Lord Jesus, to create doubts about the crux of the gospel – the death, burial, and resurrection of the Lord Jesus. In the last article we had seen that to this end, one of the false teachings that he spreads is that not the Lord Jesus, but someone else was crucified in His place. We had seen the fallacy of this contention through the Gospel accounts. Today we will begin to look at another similar false teaching, again intended to create doubts about the death, burial, and resurrection of the Lord Jesus.

Another wrong notion spread by Satan is that though the Lord Jesus was crucified but He did not die on the cross; He only became unconscious and only appeared to be dead on the cross; later, in the cool environment of the tomb, He revived, and walked out of the tomb, which His disciples claimed as the Lord being resurrected. To grasp the fallacy of this concocted story, it would help to understand what all the Lord Jesus was made to suffer before and during His crucifixion and death. Though it has been mentioned in the previous article, we will look into it in some detail with the relevant Bible references.

In the days of the Roman empire, the death of the cross was awarded to the worst of criminals, and was considered the most humiliating of all death penalties. The criminals were severely beaten and scourged before being crucified. To scourge them, to the whips sharp objects were attached, and by the force of the whiplash, these sharp objects would get embedded into the skin and flesh of the criminal; and when the soldier scourging the criminal would pull back the whip for the next strike, those sharp objects would tear out the skin and flesh. After they had finished scourging the condemned criminal, he would then be made to bear his wooden cross on his back that had been torn up and raw from the scourging, and walk to the place of crucifixion. There his hands and feet would be spread out on the cross, and nailed with thick nails to the cross, and the cross was made to stand erect in a public place. The crucified criminal did not die immediately. This was a very painful and long-drawn means of inflicting death. With the raw back of the person rubbing against the rough wood of the cross with every breath, therefore, each breath was an agony. Because of the body hanging by the nailed hands, the body weight came onto the hands causing excruciating pain there; and if the man tried to brace himself up by taking the weight of the body onto the feet, the nail in the feet would cause similarly excruciating pain to occur in the feet; all the while his raw, bleeding back would be rubbing against the wood of the cross. So, whatever the crucified criminal did, it would only aggravate his pain, not relieve it. Eventually, exhausted by all this, he would not even be able to take full breaths and he would gradually die over a long period of time, at times, it would take more than a day to die, and they would be taken off the cross only after their death. The Lord Jesus, knowing all this, still willingly suffered this painful death, so that we could be provided with the way to escape the eternal torment of hell.

The Lord Jesus was crucified in the afternoon, and after about three hours on the cross, He gave up His spirit (Matthew 27:45-50). Because, according to the Law of the Jews, the dead body had to be buried before sunset (Deuteronomy 21:22-23); and the next day was the sabbath day, in which no Jew would do any work, therefore, it was necessary to bury the body of the Lord the same evening before sunset. To hasten the death of the crucified person, the Romans had devised another agonizing method - they would break the legs of the crucified person. This would not only aggravate the pain, but would now also make it impossible for the person to brace himself up by pushing up on his nailed feet. The chest of the person, hanging by the nailed hands, would be stretched by the body weight, and not allow the person to breath adequately, and the person would succumb to this pain and choking sensation, somewhat sooner than he would otherwise have. The soldiers had come to do this to the Lord, but when they saw that He had already died, they did not do this, but to ascertain His death, they pierced His chest, “Therefore, because it was the Preparation Day, that the bodies should not remain on the cross on the Sabbath (for that Sabbath was a high day), the Jews asked Pilate that their legs might be broken, and that they might be taken away. Then the soldiers came and broke the legs of the first and of the other who was crucified with Him. But when they came to Jesus and saw that He was already dead, they did not break His legs. But one of the soldiers pierced His side with a spear, and immediately blood and water came out. And he who has seen has testified, and his testimony is true; and he knows that he is telling the truth, so that you may believe. For these things were done that the Scripture should be fulfilled, "Not one of His bones shall be broken." And again, another Scripture says, "They shall look on Him whom they pierced."” (John 19:31-37).

After it was confirmed that the Lord had died, two of His followers asked for His body from Pilate, and before sunset quickly wrapped it in a cloth with about a hundred pounds of mixture of myrrh and aloes and put His body in a nearby tomb “After this, Joseph of Arimathea, being a disciple of Jesus, but secretly, for fear of the Jews, asked Pilate that he might take away the body of Jesus; and Pilate gave him permission. So he came and took the body of Jesus. And Nicodemus, who at first came to Jesus by night, also came, bringing a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about a hundred pounds. Then they took the body of Jesus, and bound it in strips of linen with the spices, as the custom of the Jews is to bury. Now in the place where He was crucified there was a garden, and in the garden a new tomb in which no one had yet been laid. So there they laid Jesus, because of the Jews' Preparation Day, for the tomb was nearby” (John 19:38-42); “Joseph of Arimathea, a prominent council member, who was himself waiting for the kingdom of God, coming and taking courage, went in to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus. Pilate marveled that He was already dead; and summoning the centurion, he asked him if He had been dead for some time. So when he found out from the centurion, he granted the body to Joseph. Then he bought fine linen, took Him down, and wrapped Him in the linen. And he laid Him in a tomb which had been hewn out of the rock, and rolled a stone against the door of the tomb” (Mark 15:43-46).

In the next article, we will look at some more of the Biblical facts related to the death, burial, and resurrection of the Lord Jesus, and then see how, in face of these Biblical facts this false teaching that the Lord did not die on the cross, but only became unconscious; then revived in the tomb, and walked out of tomb, utterly fails.

If you have not yet accepted the discipleship of the Lord, make your decision in favor of the Lord Jesus now to ensure your eternal life and heavenly blessings. Where there is obedience to the Lord, where there is respect and obedience to His Word, there is also the blessing and protection of the Lord. Voluntarily repent of your sins and ask the Lord Jesus for forgiveness of your sins, voluntarily and sincerely surrender yourself to Him - this is the only way to salvation and heavenly life. You only have to say a short but sincere prayer to the Lord Jesus Christ willingly and with a penitent heart, and at the same time completely commit and submit your life to Him. You can also make this prayer and submission in words something like, “Lord Jesus, I am sorry for my sins and repent of them. I thank you for taking my sins upon yourself, paying for them through your life.  Because of them you died on the cross in my place, were buried, and you rose again from the grave on the third day for my salvation, and today you are the living Lord God and have freely provided to me the forgiveness, and redemption from my sins, through faith in you. Please forgive my sins, take me under your care, and make me your disciple. I submit my life into your hands." Your one prayer from a sincere and committed heart will make your present and future life, in this world and in the hereafter, heavenly and blessed for eternity.

Teachings Related to the Gospel – 28

We are presently considering teachings related to the gospel, and have seen that in 1 Corinthians 15:1-4 and Galatians 1:4 is the gist of the true God given gospel. It is this God given gospel that through the work of God the Holy Spirit has the power to convict people of their sins, bring them to faith in the Lord Jesus and salvation, and change their lives. This power and efficacy of the God given gospel is because of God the Holy Spirit, who has also been called ‘the Spirit of Truth’ (John 14:17; 15:26; 16:13). Since, by definition, God the Holy Spirit will not be associated in any way with anything that is not the truth, therefore, anything that is not in absolute conformity with the God given gospel, will also be devoid of the power of the Holy Spirit. Therefore, anything other than this God given gospel will be a perversion of the gospel, and will be ineffective for saving people from their sins, no matter how attractive, appealing, and educative it may sound. To pervert this God given gospel and render it ineffective, Satan keeps trying to get people to add or take away from it, by modifying it through their wisdom, understanding, and altering it according to the situation at hand. In the last article we have briefly seen three common ways, related to religious and good works, through which Satan alters and perverts the gospel. Today we will consider something more about these satanic perversions of the gospel.

The sacrificial death of the Lord Jesus on the Cross of Calvary, and His resurrection from the dead are crucial to the gospel narrative. Without them, the gospel is infructuous, and salvation through repentance for sins and coming to faith in the Lord Jesus is vain (1 Corinthians 15:12-20). Therefore, another way in which Satan tries to discredit the gospel and try to have people disbelieve the gospel is by creating doubts about the death and resurrection of the Lord Jesus. Satan does this by challenging the death and resurrection of the Lord; as well as the Lord’s coming to earth in the flesh, as a human being. Satan does this through contrived, untenable stories that sound logical and even pious, and people fall for them. But these stories cannot stand up to scrutiny based on the accounts of the Lord’s death and resurrection as recorded in the four Gospels. We will very briefly consider these concocted stories and their rebuttal based on the Gospel accounts of the crucifixion, death, burial, and resurrection of the Lord Jesus.

One of the ways Satan has tried to create doubts about the death of the Lord Jesus is by alleging that it was not Jesus who was crucified and died on the cross, but someone resembling Him. After His being identified by Judas Iscariot and caught (Mark 14:43-46) till His crucifixion, the Lord Jesus was never left alone even for a moment. He was continually in the hands of His enemies, including the Roman soldiers. So, when and where would there have been a chance for Him to escape, and someone else take His place, without anybody knowing anything about this switch? The Gospel accounts show how severely He was flogged, tortured and ridiculed before being crucified (Matthew 26:67; 27:27-31; Luke 22:63; John 19:1-3), rendering Him so weak that He could not carry His cross (Matthew 27:32), and finally He was brutally crucified to die an excruciating death. Why would someone innocent suffer all this, and not say that he was not the one they were wanting to crucify? Moreover, the closest of His disciples who had claimed to always stand by Him even unto death, had forsaken Him and fled (Matthew 26:35, 56; Mark 14:31, 50); so, who would have volunteered to take His place and suffer all this, in His place? Then, at the place of His crucifixion, His mother and some other women who knew Him were there, and so was His disciple John, and the Lord handed over the charge of looking after His mother to John (John 19:25-27). Would this have been possible if the person hanging on the cross was someone other than the Lord? Would not all these people have identified that the one on the cross was not Jesus but someone else?

We will continue to look at these attempts to pervert the gospel through contrived stories meant to discredit the crucifixion, death, burial, and resurrection of the Lord Jesus in the next article.

Teachings Related to the Gospel – 22

We have reviewed in the last article that the Jews living at the time of the Lord Jesus’s earthly ministry, assumed the word gospel to mean deliverance from Roman rule and their being given back the charge of ruling over the land of Israel – the Kingdom of God’s people, therefore, the Kingdom of God. But that is not what the Lord Jesus had in mind; and the Lord’s actual intended meaning should have been apparent to them through His preaching and teaching to them. They should also have understood the correct meaning of the Lord’s preaching by the fact that His call to the Jews was not a call to prepare for battle against the Romans, but to repent. Also, the Lord had asked His disciples to carry His message to not just the borders of the land of Israel, but to the ends of the earth (Acts 1:8).

Moreover, repentance has nothing to do with fighting a physical battle; rather, it is related to one’s spiritual life. In repentance and preparing for the Kingdom of God, there is a great significance of the work of the Holy Spirit of God in a Christian Believer’s life. To deceive and misguide people into getting entangled in vain things (2 Corinthians 11:3, 13-15), Satan has had many wrong doctrines and false teachings propagated about the Holy Spirit and His ministry amongst the Christian Believers. Therefore, to see what the Bible actually says about the commonly misinterpreted and misused aspects of the ministry of the Holy Spirit amongst the Believers, in the last article we had very briefly seen the relevant Bible verses, related to the ministries of the Holy Spirit, that are commonly misinterpreted and misused in Christianity. Today we will see, from the Bible, about what the gospel is, and what it means.

The Holy Spirit, through the Apostle Paul has summarized the gospel in 1 Corinthians 15:1-4, “1. Moreover, brethren, I declare to you the gospel which I preached to you, which also you received and in which you stand, 2. by which also you are saved, if you hold fast that word which I preached to you--unless you believed in vain. 3. For I delivered to you first of all that which I also received: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, 4. and that He was buried, and that He rose again the third day according to the Scriptures,” and that is the gist of the gospel, the good news, that the Lord asked His disciples to carry ‘to the end of the earth’ (Acts 1:8). As commanded in the Great Commission by the Lord Jesus to His disciples (Matthew 28:19-20), those who accept this gospel, and accordingly become the disciples of the Lord Jesus, only they are to be baptized, and are to be taught the Word of the Lord.

Let us take note of what Paul has stated here under the guidance of the Holy Spirit in context of the gospel:

  • The gospel is not to be created, but to be declared, to be preached by the preacher; and is to be received by the Believer, with the intention to stand firmly in it, for it to be effective (Hebrews 4:2).

  • The gospel contains the message of salvation, which if accepted and believed upon, and then held fast in life, i.e., firmly adhered to or resolutely obeyed, has the power to save the person for eternity from all the consequences of his sins.

  • The gospel is not according to man’s wisdom and understanding; no one has to imagine or create it according to his own understanding and the situation at hand, and as per his assessment of the audience. Paul says in verse 3 that he received the gospel, and he delivered what he had received, just as he had received it. It is something predetermined by God, and only has to be passed on to others, just as it has been given by God, without anyone mixing their own thoughts or wisdom or interpretations into it. This one God given gospel is for all times, for all places, for all situations, for all persons, just as it is, just as it has been stated here.

  • The second half of verse 3 and the whole of verse 4 make it clear that the gospel is about Christ Jesus suffering death for the sins of mankind, being buried, and then rising from the dead on the third day. This is the crux of the gospel, and there can be no deviation whatsoever from this crux, in any form; there can be no additions of any kind to it, and nothing can be taken away from it.

  • There is nothing stated here that asks the person accepting and believing in the gospel to also do good works and/or fulfil some religious obligations along with believing in the gospel, to make the gospel operative and effective. All a person has to do is to believe and accept that the Lord Jesus died for his sins, was buried, and rose again on the third day, and thereby has paid the whole penalty of his sins, and set him free from them. The good works, the Christian living, the spiritual transformation of the person, etc. are not a pre-condition to the person’s accepting the gospel; they all follow his believing and accepting the gospel, just as he is.

  • As it says twice, in verses 3 and 4, the gospel is according to the Scriptures, i.e., what we know as the Old Testament now. The gospel is not something new, something brought up and added to God’s Word in the New Testament times. The coming of the Lord Jesus, His death, burial, and resurrection, had all been pre-ordained and prophesied in the Scriptures, i.e., the Old Testament.

  • The gospel provides the way to come out of one’s sorry state, having disobeyed God and committed mistakes, as Paul reminds the Corinthian Believers towards the end of this letter, which he wrote to them to correct the many wrong things that had crept into them.

  • Believing in the gospel is not about converting from one religion to another. In this summary of the gospel, there is no mention of any religion, or of changing from one religion to another. It has nothing to do with any religion.

We will continue to learn about the gospel in the coming articles, and further develop and understand from the Bible, not only the thoughts presented above, but also how Satan has been trying to subvert and render the gospel vain through getting the preachers to add their own versions, understanding, and interpretations to it.

Teachings Related to the Gospel – 6

At the beginning of this series, after the preliminary considerations, we had seen that there are three categories of Biblical teachings that are essential for the growth of every Christian Believer and of the Church. These are teachings related to the gospel; the six basic teachings in Hebrews 6:1-2; and teachings related to Christian living and behavior. Of these, we have started considering the teachings related to the gospel from the Bible, and saw that the gospel is about the Kingdom of God, and not about any worldly prosperity or gains. Moreover, for the gospel to be effective, it requires that the person accepting the gospel repents and believes in it, with heartfelt honesty and sincerity (Hebrews 4:2). Therefore, we have started to learn about what God’s Word the Bible says about these two essentials, repentance and believing, related to the gospel; and are presently studying about repentance.

In the last two articles, through the example of King Josiah, and then through some other examples we saw that true repentance is evidenced by a changed life, by developing a love for God’s Word, and a practical active desire to have others also believe in the gospel. We concluded the last article by seeing that repentance is God’s commandment for all of mankind, with no exceptions for any one, irrespective of their religion or belief or religious status. Today we will see about the basis, or the effective reason that brings about this kind of repentance and its consequent changes; and, then will see something about what God’s Word says about the changes.

Paul, under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit wrote, “For godly sorrow produces repentance leading to salvation, not to be regretted; but the sorrow of the world produces death” (2 Corinthians 7:10). So, we see from here that there are two kinds of repentance that are displayed by the world; one comes through a ‘godly sorrow;’ and the other is through ‘the sorrow of the world.’ The outcomes of these two kinds of sorrow or the repentance because of them, are entirely different, in fact are diametrically opposite. The one because of a ‘godly sorrow’ leads to salvation, i.e., eternal life and its related benefits; whereas the one which is through ‘the sorrow of the world’ leads to death. In the examples we have seen in preceding articles, i.e., of King Josiah, Job, Paul, devout Jews etc., we saw how this ‘godly sorrow’ worked in their lives. All of them were very religious, and zealous for God, and were very active in their religious works and commitments, in fulfilling God’s Law from beforehand. But when they were convicted, either by God’s Word or by being confronted by God, or by the Lord Jesus, they immediately realized that despite all their very sincere religiosity and a diligent commitment to religious works, their actual spiritual state was one of being unworthy of coming in the presence of God or of entering His kingdom.

With this realization, they took a very crucial decision, a decision which made all the difference in the outcome, turned it in their favor – they simply threw themselves down at God’s feet, just as they were, trusting Him to be merciful, longsuffering and forgiving, and one who would act according to these characteristics. This is what ‘godly sorrow’ means – as soon as one realizes his actual spiritual state from God’s perspective, then, instead of trying to justify himself, or trying to be more religious, more committed to religious works, just surrendering oneself totally into God’s hands. Then, with a fully committed heart, to seek God’s will for the next step to be taken. And not trying to be ‘better’ or worthy of being accepted by some more works, or some other self-contrived devices.

Had they pledged to work more or better to become acceptable to God, that would have been a tacit assertion that they can be good or righteous enough to enter heaven by their own means and methods, by their own works. This would never be possible, nor would ever be feasible, because it immediately brings in contradictions in God’s Word – it would go contrary to Isaiah 64:6 “…we are all like an unclean thing, And all our righteousnesses are like filthy rags…” It would also negate the Lord’s exhortation to Nicodemus, that without being Born-Again he can never enter the Kingdom of God (John 3:3, 5, 7), and by implication is that without being Born-Again, no one else can enter heaven either; and would also go against the other similar references from God’s Word. Moreover, as evidenced by the lives of Job, King Josiah, Paul, Nicodemus, the devout Jews etc., if their righteousness by works was inconsequential for salvation, then what more can any other person do, that they had not already done, only to realize how woefully short they actually were of the standards of God’s holiness?

On the other hand, ‘the sorrow of the world’ is a false, a make-believe kind of sorrow, an outward dramatic demonstration of sorrow, more for showing to the world, than because of a sincere change of heart or remorse for the wrongs they have done. It is something like when a pick-pocket or thief is caught in the act, he immediately starts begging for mercy, apologizing, telling sob-stories to justify his committing the wrong, making promises of never doing it again, etc. But once he is set free, he returns to doing the same things again. All his apologies, begging for mercy, sob-stories, etc. were just an eyewash meant to fool others; there was no real remorse or sorrow in him for what he had done. A similar make-believe show of repentance before God by a sinner, may fool some people, and even fool the sinner himself making him believe that he has repented, but can never fool God, for God knows those who are His (2 Timothy 2:19). And as we have seen, genuine repentance is evidenced by a changed life of departing from iniquity, not by mere spoken words. This kind of ‘the sorrow of the world’ only means that the person is still in his sin, has not actually surrendered his life to the Lord. Therefore, since he has not received the gift of eternal life from the Lord Jesus, he will have to receive the wages of sin, i.e., death (Romans 6:23).

In the next article we will consider the change that true repentance brings in a person’s life.
