Consequences of Sin /

 Understanding Sin and Salvation – 4

English Translation

Consequences of Sin

In the previous three articles we have considered what sin is according to God's Word, the Bible; and what God defines as sin. In short, the Bible states that the violation of God’s commandments, the transgression of His Law, [and also the transgression of His Ten Commandments (Exodus 20:1–20), and of the Two Great Commandments (Matthew 22:35–40) upon which all of God's Commandments and all of the instructions and the teachings given by Him through His prophets are based], and every kind of iniquity or unrighteousness is sin.

The holy, sinless God cannot associate with sin; since He is so pure that He cannot even see evil “You are of purer eyes than to behold evil, And cannot look on wickedness…” (Habakkuk 1:13); Sin creates a barrier between God and man, and breaks down the fellowship "But your iniquities have separated you from your God; And your sins have hidden His face from you, So that He will not hear" (Isaiah 59:2). In all of God's creation, man is the only one whom He created in His image, with His hands, and by breathing life into him made him into a living being, and gave Him authority over all the earth and all creatures (Genesis 1:27–28; 2:7). God used to have fellowship with man, and used to visit him (Genesis 3:8). That is why God had warned the first humans, Adam and Eve, that if they ate the forbidden fruit of the Garden, they would die (Genesis 2:17; 3:3).

To die shows an irreversible separation; irreversible both in terms of human capabilities and context. When a person dies physically, he is so permanently separated from his relatives, friends, family members, and everyone in the world that he cannot return or be brought back by any human effort. The same thing is also expressed in figurative language to break ties permanently; when someone is told "from today you have died for me", it means that the relationship between them has so permanently ended, as if death has separated them. Because of the sin of disobedience towards God, committed by Adam and Eve, this fellowship between God and man was broken, and man came into the danger of death, i.e., eternal separation from God. Without clearly understanding this very important and fundamental fact, it is impossible to grasp the Biblical understanding of salvation.

Now God had two options - either to allow man to stay in his sin, and to suffer the consequences of that sin; Or, he destroys those first two humans, Adam and Eve; and then creates new humans, and starts the process all over again. But God loves man so much that neither of these two options were acceptable to him. Neither did He want to see man suffering in the plight of sin, nor did He want to destroy him. He is such a loving God, that He is not pleased even with the death of the wicked. "Say to them: 'As I live,' says the Lord God, 'I have no pleasure in the death of the wicked, but that the wicked turn from his way and live. Turn, turn from your evil ways! For why should you die, O house of Israel?'" (Ezekiel 33:11).

The solution to this problem caused by sin was to either forgive the sin; or else, the one guilty of sin had to suffer the penalty of sin. It was a great dilemma; If God, in His great love for both of them, ignored the sin of Adam and Eve and left them unpunished, it would go against His true, upright, just, non-partisan character and attributes; which is never acceptable to God. If he had left them to suffer the consequences of their sin, neither his loving heart would accept it, nor would it conform to his loving, gracious, caring, and merciful character and attributes. Man's sin had put God in a position of great dilemma.

What is impossible for man is possible for God, “But He [Jesus] said, ‘The things which are impossible with men are possible with God’” (Luke 18:27). God Himself solved this seemingly impossible problem — He freely made available the way of salvation for all of mankind through faith in the Lord Jesus; about which we will see in the coming articles. When we, without any preconceived notions, and with an impartial perspective, ponder over this way of salvation created and provided by God, it immediately becomes apparent that there can be no solution to the problem of sin, that is so comprehensively beneficial to all the people of the world, absolutely free of all the man-made limits of religion-caste-clan-civilization-place etc. that divide the people.

For now, I humbly request you, if you haven't yet been saved, haven't accepted God's solution, then please do it now while you have the opportunity and time; for you never know whether this opportunity or situation will remain, or, for how long will it remain. A short prayer of submission made by you voluntarily, while sincerely repenting of your sins, “Lord Jesus, I confess that I have disobeyed You, knowingly or unknowingly, in mind, in thought, in attitude, and in deeds, and have committed sins. I believe that you have fully borne the punishment of my sins by your sacrifice on the cross, and have paid the full price of those sins for all eternity. Please forgive my sins, change my heart and mind towards you, and make me your disciple, take me with you." This sincere decision to allow the Lord to change your heart and mind, taken with an honest heart will make this life of yours and the life of the hereafter into heavenly life. The decision is yours.

What Is Sin? - 3 /

     जो भी ढिठाई से मन में पाप को रखते हुए, बाहरी रीति से धर्मी बनने का ढोंग रखते हुए परमेश्वर के पास मन के इस दोगलेपन के साथ आते हैं, परमेश्वर उनसे उनके उस दोगलेपन के अनुसार व्यवहार करता है (यहेजकेल 14:3-7)।

    परमेश्वर की अनाज्ञाकारिता के संदर्भ में इसे कुछ और विस्तार से देखते हैं: इस्राएल को दी गई अपनी व्यवस्था के आरम्भ में, परमेश्वर ने सभी के लिए परमेश्वर और अन्य मनुष्यों के साथ सम्बन्धों एवँ व्यवहार को नियंत्रित करने के लिए अपनी दस आज्ञाएं दीं। ये दस आज्ञाएँ मनुष्य जीवन के प्रत्येक आयाम – परमेश्वर, परिवार और समाज से उसके सम्बन्ध एवँ व्यवहार से सम्बन्ध रखतीं हैं, उन सम्बन्धों के लिए मार्गदर्शन करती हैं, मनुष्यों के व्यवहार को निर्धारित करती हैं। यह एक रोचक तथ्य है कि सँसार के किसी भी देश के संविधान में ऐसा कुछ भी नहीं है जो इन दस आज्ञाओं की परिधि के बाहर हो। इन दस आज्ञाओं के आरंभिक भाग में परमेश्वर ने मनुष्य के जीवन में अपने स्थान, आदर और मान को किसी भी अन्य को देना, परमेश्वर को कोई या कैसा भी भौतिक स्वरूप देना, वर्जित किया है (निर्गमन 20:1-7)। इसलिए, किसी भी व्यक्ति के द्वारा,- अपने जीवन में परमेश्वर को उसका वह सर्वोच्च आदर एवँ स्थान प्रदान नहीं करना, जिसका वह हकदार है;

- अपने जीवन में परमेश्वर के स्थान पर सँसार की बातों या लोगों को अधिक महत्व देना;
- और सच्चे जीवते सृजनहार प्रभु परमेश्वर को, जो आत्मा है (यूहन्ना 4:24), अपने मन के अनुसार बनाए हुए कोई भी भौतिक स्वरूप, मूर्तियों या सृजी गई वस्तुओं के रूप में उपासना करना, उन मन-गढ़न्त नाशमान भौतिक वस्तुओं को ईश्वरीय आदर अथवा महत्व देना, आदि;

    सभी परमेश्वर की आज्ञाओं का उल्लंघन हैं, इसलिए पाप है।

    इन्हीं दस आज्ञाओं का शेष भाग (निर्गमन 20:8-20), मनुष्य के पारिवारिक और सामाजिक सम्बन्धों के विषय में है। इन आज्ञाओं का उल्लंघन करना भी, अर्थात पारिवारिक एवँ सामाजिक सम्बन्धों में परमेश्वर के निर्देशों की अवहेलना करना भी पाप है।

    प्रभु यीशु मसीह से, उनकी पृथ्वी की सेवकाई के दिनों में यहूदियों के एक धार्मिक अगुवे ने उन्हें परखने के लिए एक प्रश्न किया था, और प्रभु के उत्तर से वह फिर निरुत्तर हो गया। यह वार्तालाप हमारे वर्तमान सन्दर्भ के लिए महत्वपूर्ण है: “और उन में से एक व्यवस्थापक ने परखने के लिये, उस से पूछा। हे गुरु; व्यवस्था में कौन सी आज्ञा बड़ी है? उसने उस से कहा, तू परमेश्वर अपने प्रभु से अपने सारे मन और अपने सारे प्राण और अपनी सारी बुद्धि के साथ प्रेम रख। बड़ी और मुख्य आज्ञा तो यही है। और उसी के समान यह दूसरी भी है, कि तू अपने पड़ोसी से अपने समान प्रेम रख। ये ही दो आज्ञाएं सारी व्यवस्था और भविष्यद्वक्ताओं का आधार है” (मत्ती 22:35-40)। प्रभु यीशु के इस उत्तर में मनुष्य के परमेश्वर तथा अन्य मनुष्यों के प्रति व्यवहार और सम्बन्ध का सार है; इसीलिए उन्होंने यह भी कहा कि परमेश्वर की सारी व्यवस्था, इन्हीं दो आज्ञाओं पर आधारित है। इसका स्पष्ट निष्कर्ष है कि मनुष्य के किसी भी विचार या व्यवहार में जहाँ भी इनमें से एक भी आज्ञा का उल्लंघन हुआ, वहीं मनुष्य पाप की दशा में आ गया; परमेश्वर की व्यवस्था का उल्लंघन करने के कारण, पाप का दोषी ठहराया गया है।

    परमेश्वर के वचन बाइबल के अनुसार, अदन की वाटिका में मनुष्य द्वारा किए गए उस प्रथम पाप के बाद से मनुष्य में पाप करने की प्रवृत्ति ने घर कर लिया, और तब से सँसार का प्रत्येक मनुष्य पाप स्वभाव, तथा पाप करने की प्रवृत्ति के साथ जन्म लेता है “इसलिये जैसा एक मनुष्य के द्वारा पाप जगत में आया, और पाप के द्वारा मृत्यु आई, और इस रीति से मृत्यु सब मनुष्यों में फैल गई, इसलिये कि सब ने पाप किया” (रोमियों 5:12)। इसका सर्व-विदित और प्रत्यक्ष प्रमाण है, जब हम मानवीय व्यवहार एवँ क्रियाओं का, पाप के प्रति बाइबल के इन उपरोक्त व्यापक दृष्टिकोणों के सन्दर्भ में, आँकलन करते हैं, तो यह प्रगट हो जाता है कि परमेश्वर की दृष्टि में कोई भी मनुष्य पाप से अछूता नहीं है, सभी मनुष्य किसी-न-किसी रीति से पापी होने की परिभाषा में आ जाते हैं। इस कारण अपनी स्वाभाविक दशा में, सभी मनुष्यों ने मन-ध्यान-विचार-मनसा-दृष्टिकोण, व्यवहार या कर्मों के द्वारा पाप किया है; वे चाहे किसी भी धर्म, जाति, देश, आदि के क्यों न हों, इसलिए सभी मनुष्य परमेश्वर की महिमा से रहित और परमेश्वर के साथ संगति रखने के अयोग्य हैं, “इसलिये कि सब ने पाप किया है और परमेश्वर की महिमा से रहित हैं” (रोमियों 3:23) और सृष्टि के आरम्भ में पाप के विषय परमेश्वर द्वारा कहे गए दण्ड, मृत्यु (उत्पत्ति 2:17), के भागी हैं, “क्योंकि पाप की मजदूरी तो मृत्यु है, परन्तु परमेश्वर का वरदान हमारे प्रभु मसीह यीशु में अनन्त जीवन है” (रोमियों 6:23)।

    पाप की इस अपरिहार्य प्रतीत होने वाली समस्या के ईश्वरीय समाधान, “... परन्तु परमेश्वर का वरदान हमारे प्रभु मसीह यीशु में अनन्त जीवन है” (रोमियों 6:23), के बारे में हम अगले लेख में देखना आरम्भ करेंगे।

    यदि आप ने अभी भी अपने पापों के लिए प्रभु यीशु से क्षमा नहीं मांगी है, तो अभी आपके पास अवसर है। स्वेच्छा से, सच्चे और पूर्णतः समर्पित मन से, अपने पापों के प्रति सच्चे पश्चाताप के साथ एक छोटी प्रार्थना, “हे प्रभु यीशु मैं मान लेता हूँ कि मैंने जाने-अनजाने में, मन-ध्यान-विचार और व्यवहार में आपकी अनाज्ञाकारिता की है, पाप किए हैं। मैं मान लेता हूँ कि आपने क्रूस पर दिए गए अपने बलिदान के द्वारा मेरे पापों के दण्ड को अपने ऊपर लेकर पूर्णतः सह लिया, उन पापों की पूरी-पूरी कीमत सदा काल के लिए चुका दी है। कृपया मेरे पापों को क्षमा करें, मेरे मन को अपनी ओर परिवर्तित करें, और मुझे अपना शिष्य बना लें, अपने साथ कर लें।” आपका सच्चे मन से लिया गया मन परिवर्तन का यह निर्णय आपके इस जीवन तथा परलोक के जीवन को स्वर्गीय जीवन बना देगा।

The Bible, Sin, and Salvation – 3

English Translation

What Is Sin? - 3

In the last two articles, while considering what God has taught about sin in His Word, the Bible, we have looked at some very important and fundamental things about what sin is according to the Bible. We have seen that:

- According to the Bible, sin has been defined by God Himself; not what it may have been defined and explained by any person or persons. God is true, eternal, omnipotent, unchanging, the same always and everywhere (Malachi 3:6; Hebrews 13:8); and all of these qualities of Him are also present in His Word, i.e., in whatever He says and does (Psalm 89:34; Ezekiel 12:28). Whatever He has said and determined, ultimately, only that will be followed and obeyed by all, and eventually everything will be judged, every decision will be made according to His will and what He has said (John 12:48; 1 Corinthians 3:11-13).

- Sin is not merely doing something physically, but, essentially, it is to violate God's laws (1 John 3:4). Iniquity or unrighteousness of any kind is sin (1 John 5:17), no matter what the circumstances, or the purpose behind committing it.
- That is why all such thoughts, attitudes, feelings, intentions, tendencies, actions, behaviors, etc., which are not according to the rules and standards of righteousness given by Him, and do not conform to those standards, are sin in the eyes of God.
- Being in sin is a state of the mind and heart. Every type of sin begins in the mind, and the sin hidden in the mind manifests itself in physical activities in convenient circumstances and time (James 1:14–15; Mark 7:20–23). That is why in the eyes of God, sins committed in a person’s thoughts are as punishable, as sins actually committed physically (Matthew 5:22, 28).

Those who come to God with hypocrisy of heart, showing themselves to be righteous outwardly, while hiding sin in their heart, God treats them according to their hypocrisy (Ezekiel 14:3-7).

Let's look at this in some more detail in the context of disobedience towards God: At the beginning of his Law given to Israel, God gave his Ten Commandments for everyone, to govern man’s relationships and behavior with God and with other human beings. These Ten Commandments deal with each and every aspect of human life – man’s relationship and behavior with God, with family, and with society. They serve as a guide for maintaining those relationships, and for determining the mutual behavior of human beings. It is an interesting fact that there is nothing in the constitution of any country in the world that is outside the purview of these Ten Commandments. In the opening part of these Ten Commandments, God forbids man to give His, i.e., God’s status, His honor, and His dignity to anyone else; or to make any kind of physical representation of God (Exodus 20:1–7). Therefore, for any person,

- not to give God the highest respect and place He deserves in one’s life;

- giving more importance to the things or people of the world than to God in one’s life; and,
- according divine reverence to, and worshiping the true and living Creator God, the Lord who is Spirit (John 4:24), in the form of any man-made physical form represented in perishable material things, or as idols made according to man’s imagination, or considering Him to have the form of any creature created by God, etc.

These, and all such things are all violations of God's commandments, and therefore, are sin.

The remainder of these Ten Commandments (Exodus 20:8-20) deal with man's family and social relationships. To disobey these commandments is also a sin, since that is disobeying God's instructions for family and social relationships and responsibilities.

The Lord Jesus Christ, during his earthly ministry, was asked a question by a religious leader of the Jews who wanted to test him, and the Lord’s answer put him at a loss for words. This conversation is important to our current context: “Then one of them, a lawyer, asked Him a question, testing Him, and saying, "Teacher, which is the great commandment in the law?" Jesus said to him, "'You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.' This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like it: 'You shall love your neighbor as yourself.' On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets" (Matthew 22:35-40). This answer from the Lord Jesus summarizes man's expected behavior and relationship towards God and other human beings. That is why He also said that the whole Law of God is based on these two commandments. The clearly evident conclusion is that wherever any one of these commands is violated in any thought or behavior of man, there man has come to be in the state of sin; being guilty of having transgressed God’s Law and committed sin.

According to God's Word the Bible, since that first sin committed by man in the Garden of Eden, the tendency to sin has taken roots in man. Since then onwards, every human being in the world is born with a sin nature, with a tendency to sin, "Therefore, just as through one man sin entered the world, and death through sin, and thus death spread to all men, because all sinned" (Romans 5:12). This is very well seen and evidenced by the fact that, when we assess human behavior and actions in the context of the above-mentioned broad-ranging Biblical views of sin, it becomes apparent that in God's eyes no man is free from sin, all human beings fall into the definition of being a sinner in some way or the other. Therefore, in their natural state, all human beings have sinned in mind-attitude-thought-tendency-perspective, behavior or actions. No matter what their religion, race, country, etc. may be, all human beings fall short of the glory of God and are unworthy of fellowship with God, “for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23) And are deserving of God's punishment of sin, death, as He had said at the beginning of their creation (Genesis 2:17), "For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord" (Romans 6:23).

The divine solution to this seemingly insurmountable problem of sin, "...but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord" (Romans 6:23), we will begin to look at in the next article.

If you still haven't asked the Lord Jesus for forgiveness for your sins, you still have a chance right now. Voluntarily, with a sincere and wholly submissive heart, with sincere repentance of your sins, please say a short prayer, “Lord Jesus, I confess that I have disobeyed You, knowingly or unknowingly, in mind, in thought, in attitude, and in deeds, and have committed sins.

Understanding Sin and Salvation - 2

English Translation

What Is Sin? - 2

In the previous article we saw that in God's Word, the Bible, God stated that according to God's standard of holiness and purity, sin is a violation of God's law; and not of the laws or things of man. And every unrighteousness is sin - no matter what the circumstances in which it was committed, or the purpose behind doing it. We also saw that in the eyes of God, sin is not only the physical acts or committed deeds; but all those feelings, thoughts, attitudes, desires, etc. of the mind, which are against the law of God, inconsistent with it, and which incite or inspire any kind of iniquity, are also sins. Even if they are not manifestly committed, i.e., have not yet been carried out physically, they still are as heinous sins in the eyes of God as they would be by their outward manifestation or being done through bodily actions. That is, having sinful thoughts in the mind is as much a sin as committing those sins by the body. God considers giving sinful thoughts a place in the mind to be just as punishable as giving place to that sin in one's life, and judges the person accordingly.

This highest level of sin, holiness, and purity is unmatched in the world. This standard is found only in the Bible, and only in the God of the Bible. In no other scriptures or beliefs of the world, is such a high level of holiness, of being sinless, ever seen. At a first glance, accepting this standard, and adhering to it to live by it, seems very awkward, because it is practically impossible for any human being to stand before it, and to live by it. So, it appears that God has deliberately placed impossible standards before men, and then judged men to be guilty by these unattainable standards, knowing that no man could ever have an answer for them. Has God deliberately placed man into an impossible position, into something actually beyond the capabilities of man?

If we look at the origin of sin in the Bible, and study its background, it is clear that by setting these standards, God has not trapped man, but prepared him to understand the way out of sin. God has given man the way to turn and surrender to His infinite, indescribable love for Him, and be delivered from his sin. What, according to the Bible, was the first sin committed by man; and how did it happen? We find this account in the first three chapters of the first book of the Bible, Genesis, and readers will find it easier to understand if they read these chapters for themselves. In short, God, having completed the creation of the universe in six days, saw it and called it "very good" (Genesis 1:31). Man too, whom, unlike the rest of creation, God had created not by speaking His word, but with His own hands and by breathing His breath into him had made him into a living creature (Genesis 1:27; 2:7), was included in this very good creation of God.  At the time of creation of the universe and of man, there was no sin on earth. Human beings were created as male and female, and were named Adam and Eve. God even planted a garden for them on the "very good" earth, and God used to come there to fellowship with Adam and Eve. God also gave them the responsibility of taking care of that garden. God also planted two special trees in that garden; One was the "tree of life," and the other was the "tree of the knowledge of good and evil" (Genesis 2:9). God gave man a free hand to eat all the fruits of the Garden, but forbade the fruit of "the tree of the knowledge of good and evil" (Genesis 2:16–17), and warned that the day he eats its fruit, he will come under the dominion of death.

In Genesis 3 we see that Satan took the form of a serpent to ensnare man and make him fall into sin, separate him from God. Satan made doubts arise against God in Eve's mind; raised doubts in her mind about God's love for Adam and Eve; incited her to live and do according to the feelings and thoughts that arose in her heart and mind, instead of being obedient to God, to act according to her own sight, intelligence, and understanding. Eve succumbed to this temptation of Satan, disobeyed the instruction given to her by God; did what came in her heart; and ate the fruit of the "tree of the knowledge of good and evil," herself, and gave it to Adam as well (Genesis 3:6-7). Their disobedience of God's instructions was the first sin of the world. The sin was not in that fruit; the sin was in their not following God's instructions about that fruit. Notice, Satan didn't force them to sin, he didn't make them sin by intimidating or threatening them; but did so by raising doubts in their hearts about the law of God, about His instructions to them. By first inciting them against the plans and things of God, by creating in their heart thoughts contrary to the thoughts of God, and then by means of his smooth talk, prodding them to act according to the thoughts of their heart and minds, according to the greed and desire that he awakened in their hearts and mind. Because Adam and Eve listened to their hearts and mind, instead of God; therefore, sin entered the earth and into the creation (Romans 8:19–22), and we are suffering the consequences to this day.

Therefore, God has written in His Word that sin is a violation of God's law. And therefore  God considers harboring sinful thoughts in the mind to be just as heinous and punishable, as sins actually committed in the flesh. The reality is that every sin committed in the body first takes birth and continues to reside in our mind, attitudes, feelings, and thoughts; and there it keeps on growing within us as a longing, a desire; it keeps on preparing us from within to fulfill it. And then whenever there is an opportune time, an appropriate opportunity, we end up executing that sin through our body. Sin had come to live in us with that sinful thought, it only manifested itself after some time, according to the circumstances and occasion. If sinful thoughts are not allowed to find place in the mind, or if they are immediately eradicated as soon as they sprout, then the body will also not have the desire to commit sin. That is why the Lord Jesus changes not our externals, but our hearts where sin takes roots. In the heart of the person who accepts the Lord Jesus Christ as Savior, God's Holy Spirit comes and dwells to help and guide him against letting sin find a place in his heart.

The evident reality is that it is the mind that controls the body; and not that the body controls the mind. Therefore, it is impossible to control and change the mind in a permanent way, through the acts and efforts of the body. When the Lord Jesus Christ changes the mind of a person, the actions and behavior of the body also start to reflect the changed mind. If you have not yet allowed the Lord Jesus Christ to change your mind, you can now, right now, willingly, and with a sincere and submitted heart, say a short prayer, “Lord Jesus, I confess that I have, disobeyed you in attitudes, feelings, thoughts, and behavior, and have sinned. I believe and accept that you took my sins on yourself and suffered their punishment in my place, paying the full price for my sins through your sacrifice on the cross. Please forgive my sins, change my heart and mind, make me your obedient disciple, and keep me with you.” Repentance from sins and submission to the Lord Jesus will immediately set you free from the consequences of sins and give you entry to a heavenly life of eternal blessing as a child of God.
