Teachings Related to the Elementary Principles – 09

Repentance From Dead Works - 5

    Of the six elementary principles mentioned in Hebrews 6:1-2, we are presently considering the first one, i.e., “repentance from Dead Works.” We have seen that the term “dead works” refers to those seemingly religious and good works which do not result in any spiritual growth and maturity in the life of Believers, even though done very piously, reverentially, and sincerely. In the preceding articles, we have seen Biblical examples of two kinds of dead works, i.e., humanly presumed ministries (Matthew 7:21-23), and humanly presumed worship and way of following the Lord (Matthew 15:3-9); though very commonly done by the Christians, but without any spiritual benefits in their lives. Today, we will consider the Biblical example of another kind of “dead works” related to being Born-Again and the Holy Spirit, i.e., presumed salvation. Many people are not clear about their being saved or being Born-Again, or how to discern whether they truly are in the faith or not (2 Corinthians 13:5). Very often due to external appearances and behavior, living and doing things like other Born-Again people do, most Christians tend to assume that they are also saved i.e., Born-Again; thereby, they too are the children of God, and qualify for God’s eternal heavenly blessings and being in the Kingdom of God. But this is a presumption on their part, a satanic deception, into which they have been brought.

    In Acts 8:5-25 we have an incidence of the evangelical ministry of Philip, in a city of Samaria. In that city there was a sorcerer, named Simon, and not only did he claim to be someone great, but the local people also thought that he had great powers from god, and were in great awe of him (Acts 8:9-11). But when Philip preached the gospel in that city, many people turned to the Lord, and Simon the sorcerer was also amongst those who turned to the Lord (Acts 8:12-13). It is written about him in verse 13 that he believed, he was baptized, and he continued with Philip, i.e., was in a steady fellowship with Philip; and was amazed seeing the miracles and signs which were done. When the people of the city received the Holy Spirit through the ministry of the Apostles Peter and John (Acts 8:14-17), it amazed Simon even more. Simon realized the power of the presence of the Holy Spirit in the Believers, and he too wanted to have the power to give the Holy Spirit to others, and was willing to pay money to get this power (Acts 8:18-19). Simon’s thoughts about the Holy Spirit, and his offering money for getting this power, are the indicators that though he claimed to have believed the gospel, had taken baptism, and was in fellowship with Philip the evangelist, yet he was not truly Born-Again; else he too would have received the Holy Spirit along with others, and the Holy Spirit in him, would have never let him say what he did. His not being truly Born-Again, and his still having an unregenerated heart was affirmed by Peter’s admonition of him in Acts 8:20-24; also notice that Peter asks him to repent and pray to God for the forgiveness of his wickedness (Acts 8:22-23). But Simon does not heed Peter’s instruction, instead asks him, i.e., Peter to pray for him. Notice the content of his request to Peter – it is not that he may be forgiven and truly be saved, be actually Born-Again; but that the things spoken by Peter may not come upon him. In other words, he still did not have a truly repentant heart. All he was bothered about was temporal things, things that gave him a hold or some power over people, showed him to be someone great; he was not even concerned about his spiritual state and the eternal destruction that lay ahead of him if he did not repent.

    Simon, because of his external change, taking baptism, and being in the fellowship with Philip assumed that he too was saved,  i.e., Born-Again. But his not receiving the Holy Spirit along with others – evidenced by his saying and asking for things that a person having the Holy Spirit will not say or ask for; further evidenced by his having a stubborn, unrepentant heart, exposed his actual condition. Much the same state prevails with most Christians. They assume that they are “Born-Again,” are okay with God, and when their earthly life comes to an end, they qualify to enter God’s Kingdom, because they have fulfilled certain religious rituals and traditions, and they are behaving in a certain way – as “Christians” are expected to behave, and they are fellowshipping with other Born-Again people. But their hearts have another tale to tell, they do not have hearts that are truly repentant and submitted to God, hearts that desire to glorify God; instead, they want to use God and godliness for worldly gain (1 Timothy 6:9).

    Lord is never fooled with these externals, and outward behavior; He knows them who are His (2 Timothy 2:19); He knows the heart of every person (John 2:24-25); and to grow through His Word, one has to start by turning away from iniquity (1 Peter 2:1-2); because with iniquity in a person’s heart, God will not listen to him (Psalm 66:18). Every Christian needs to check his actual condition of salvation and ascertain the state of his really being “Born-Again.” Any assumed state of being saved or Born-Again needs to be identified using the criteria given in 1 John 2:3-6. Notice here that the Lord is not asking for absolute holiness and perfection from anyone. He knows that we are dust (Psalm 103:14), and that we all keep falling into sin (1 John 1:8-10). What the Lord wants is a sincere repentance and submission to Him and a sincere desire to live in obedience to His Word, instead of carrying on in perfunctory external appearances and behavior. This false sense of being saved is another kind of “dead works” that brings no spiritual growth and maturity, therefore it needs to be repented off and rectified before it is too late.

    This incidence also illustrates the longsuffering of our Lord, and how He repeatedly keeps giving everyone the chance to repent, turn back to Him, and be saved (2 Peter 3:9). But those who stubbornly continue to reject his call to repent and submit to Him, will then eventually have to accept the consequences of their persistent refusal to accept God’s mercy. We will carry on from here in the next article.

    If you have not yet accepted the discipleship of the Lord, make your decision in favor of the Lord Jesus now to ensure your eternal life and heavenly blessings. Where there is obedience to the Lord, where there is respect and obedience to His Word, there is also the blessing and protection of the Lord. Voluntarily repent of your sins and ask the Lord Jesus for forgiveness of your sins, voluntarily and sincerely surrender yourself to Him - this is the only way to salvation and heavenly life. You only have to say a short but sincere prayer to the Lord Jesus Christ willingly and with a penitent heart, and at the same time completely commit and submit your life to Him. You can also make this prayer and submission in words something like, “Lord Jesus, I am sorry for my sins and repent of them. I thank you for taking my sins upon yourself, paying for them through your life.  Because of them you died on the cross in my place, were buried, and you rose again from the grave on the third day for my salvation, and today you are the living Lord God and have freely provided to me the forgiveness, and redemption from my sins, through faith in you. Please forgive my sins, take me under your care, and make me your disciple. I submit my life into your hands." Your one prayer from a sincere and committed heart will make your present and future life, in this world and in the hereafter, heavenly and blessed for eternity.

Utilizing the Gifts of the Holy Spirit – 2

    While learning about the stewardship of the gifts of the Holy Spirit by the Christian Believers, in the last article we had begun learning about the utilization of these gifts from Romans 12, and had seen some related preliminary considerations. We had closed the last article with the thought that the Believer’s first need to develop a correct spiritual perspective about their ministry, since it is impossible to carry out a Spiritual Ministry with a worldly and temporal attitude and perspective. Once we have the right perspective, only then can we understand God’s point-of-view about His work, i.e., our God assigned ministry, and fulfil it. It is then that we and our works will be acceptable to God, please Him and bring blessings for us. For this reason, the Holy Spirit begins this chapter, Romans 12, with the exhortation through Paul, “I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service. And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God” (Romans 12:1-2).

    Today we will look at the things to take note of in these two verses, to develop this correct spiritual perspective about working for God. The things mentioned here are:

  • Verse 1 begins with reminding the Christian Believer about the mercy of God; to understand this better, this should be seen in its context, i.e., along with the preceding verses. In chapter 11, particularly towards its end, the greatness of God and His universal power and glory have been mentioned. In comparison to this glorious and exalted stature of God, His being the supreme, omnipotent, omniscient, omnipresent One, when man considers his own puny, sinful, and unacceptable condition before God, then man realizes that there is nothing in him that God should pay any attention towards him, converse with him, or have anything to do with him. But still, since God loves all the people of the whole world, wants to have them all come into fellowship with Him, give everyone the honor of being His children (John 1:12-13), therefore the opening verse of this chapter is, “I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God…”. The implication is that for the Spiritual Ministry and proper utilization of the Spiritual gifts, man should not take pride in, or rely upon his own abilities, physical power and prowess, and skills. Instead, man, being aware of his own Spiritual inabilities should come before God in an attitude of humility, submission, and obedience and should do what God instructs him to do bearing in mind God’s grace and mercy towards him, instead of trying to get God do what man wants done from Him.

  • Then, in the second part of the verse, the Holy Spirit calls for the Christian Believer to offer himself as a living sacrifice to God, and calls doing this as “your reasonable service.” Here the Old Testament imagery of offering sacrifices to God for being accepted as His people, receiving forgiveness from Him, and for worshipping God has been brought to mind. In the Law given by God, there was a method for offering each kind of sacrifice, and a prescribed form of worship; nothing was arbitrary or according to any man’s decision, discretion, or preference. There was another important thing about the sacrifice being offered, whatever be the sacrifice or the nature and purpose of the sacrifice, that which once had been offered before God, would not return back into the hands of the person who was offering the sacrifice! Either it was totally burnt and turned to ashes, or it was handed over to the Priests for their use. Similarly, the life that has once been consecrated to the Lord God, surrendered for His use, cannot be taken back from Him and used again for temporal and worldly things. If it is being taken back, if it is being used again for temporal and worldly things, for physical lusts and desires, then it means that the life had not actually been “sacrificed” i.e., consecrated and surrendered to the Lord God for His use. Therefore, such a life will never be useful for the Lord God and will never glorify Him, no matter what the person may say, do, or show externally. Also, this dual utilization - for the world, body and temporal things, as well as for spiritual things will not be valid or acceptable; and such service will not be considered a “spiritual service” acceptable to God.

  • Then verse 2 says about the Christian worker that the change that has come within him because of his coming into the Christian Faith, should be externally and practically evident by the renewing of his mind, his changed life, his changed attitude and behavior. These are the external evidence of the inner transformation that has happened in him. Other than this no other proof of a person’s having become a Spiritual person i.e., a child of God, and the Holy Spirit having come to reside in him has been given in the Bible - a transformed heart and mind is shown and proven by a changed life and behavior; not by jumping, shouting, dramatic actions, making strange non-understandable noises etc.

  • Those, in whom this transformation becomes evident, then they also become the people who start discerning the will of God. This is a process that continually keeps carrying on and improving in the person’s life. As one is more and more “transformed by the renewing of your mind,” he starts discerning and learning the will of God more and more; and this happens through his experiences of remaining in fellowship with God.

    If you are a Christian Believer, and want to become useful for God, then learn to live a life surrendered and obedient to Him. No one can please God by fulfilling religious rituals, ceremonies, works, and festivals (Acts 15:10; 1 Peter 1:18-19). Along with giving you salvation, God has also kept some good works for you to do (Ephesians 2:10); He has placed His Holy Spirit within you for your help and guidance, who always remains with you; He has placed His Living Word in your hands; and He has made you a member of His heavenly family, and of His Body, the Church. Now for you to properly and worthily utilize these resources that God has provided you, you have to follow Romans 12:1-2, so that your works are acceptable to Him and you receive His blessings. Except for obedience to God, there is no other way of pleasing Him and being blessed by Him (1 Samuel 15:22).

    In the next article we will see from Romans 12:3 about self-evaluation in context of what we have seen today.

Voluntarily repent of your sins and ask the Lord Jesus for forgiveness of your sins, voluntarily and sincerely, surrender yourself to Him - this is the only way to salvation and heavenly life.

  • कलीसिया का स्वामी परमेश्वर है, और कलीसिया परमेश्वर का निवास-स्थान है, प्रभु की देह और दुल्हन है;

  • परमेश्वर ही व्यक्ति को कलीसिया का अंग बनाता है, और निर्णय करता है कि किसे कहाँ पर किस संगति में रखना है;

  • कलीसिया के सभी सदस्य परमेश्वर द्वारा नियुक्त उसके भण्डारी हैं, ताकि उसने उन्हें जो ज़िम्मेदारियाँ दी हैं उन्हें पूरा करें;

  • परमेश्वर की इच्छा के बिना कोई भी कलीसिया का अंग नहीं बन सकता है, और सदस्यता की इस प्रक्रिया में किसी भी मनुष्य की कोई भूमिका नहीं है;

  • नया-जन्म पाए हुए सभी विश्वासी समान रूप से परमेश्वर की सन्तान हैं, समान रूप से परमेश्वर के परिवार के सदस्य हैं, किसी में भी परस्पर कोई भिन्नता नहीं है;

  • परमेश्वर ने सभी का न्याय अपने ही हाथों में रखा है (रोमियों 12:19), और हमें यह निर्देश दिया है कि समय से पहले किसी का कोई न्याय न करें (1 कुरिन्थियों 4:5);

  • परमेश्वर कभी भी अपने किसी भी विश्वासी को अपने परिवार और राज्य से निष्कासित नहीं करता है, और न ही आज तक किसी को किया है, चाहे उस विश्वासी का जीवन और व्यवहार कैसा भी क्यों न हो; उसके पापों के लिए विश्वासी की ताड़ना होती है, किन्तु वह निष्कासित नहीं किया जाता है;

  • कोई भी विश्वासी दोष रहित नहीं है, सभी भिन्न-भिन्न प्रकार से पाप करते ही रहते हैं और उन्हें बारंबार क्षमा और बहाली के लिए परमेश्वर के सामने आते रहना ही पड़ता है (1 यूहन्ना 1:9); और कोई भी अपने आप से परमेश्वर के सामने खड़ा नहीं रह सकता है (भजन 130:3);

Excommunication From the Church – 7

    This is the concluding article on the role of Born-Again Christian Believers being God’s stewards of the Church and fellowship where God has placed them. To worthily fulfill their stewardship, they need to ensure the growth of the Church and spiritual progress of the fellow Believers. This article sums up the implications and applications of what we have learnt about this stewardship. It is meant to provoke the readers into seriously thinking about their role in the Church and becoming active about their responsibilities, instead of passively carrying on, as they have been so far. Church members, Believers, generally allow divisions and factions in the church to be created or maintained for the sake of pleasing men; they also let some people do whatever they want to in the Church. As steward of God, every Believer seriously needs to think over his membership and placement by God in a particular Church or Assembly, and the role he should be playing in that Fellowship.

All Believers in every Church or Assembly should ponder over the following facts pertaining to the Church, Since:

  • The Church belongs to God, is meant to be His dwelling place, the Body and Bride of the Lord;

  • It is God who joins a person to a Church, and decides whom to place where and in which fellowship;

  • Members of the Church are only God appointed stewards, to carry out responsibilities assigned to them by Him;

  • Without the will of God, no one can become a member of the Church, and no man has any role in their membership of God’s Church;

  • All Born Again Christian Believers are equally the children of God, are equally the members of God's family, without any differentiation of any kind;

  • God has kept all judgement to Himself (Romans 12:19), has instructed us not to judge anyone for anything before time (1 Corinthians 4:5);

  • God has never cast any Believer away from His family or Kingdom, and never will, despite whatever the Believer’s life and behavior may be; the Believer is chastised for his sins but he is never cast away;

  • No Believer is above reproach, all keep sinning in various ways all the time, and need to keep coming to God for forgiveness and restoration (1 John 1:8-10); on our own, none can stand before God, (Psalm 130:3);

 Therefore,

  • No person in the Church of God, because of his own status and standing, has the authority to ignore or over-ride God’s will and do, not the will of God but his own will.

  • No person, irrespective of his ministry, position, and standing in the Church, has the permission or authority to preach, teach, or impose his own notions upon others, notions that are based on his own wisdom and understanding, but are not in conformity with the teachings of God’s Word, cannot be specifically verified from God’s Word.

  • No person, because of personal differences of opinions and disagreements with another Believer, can forbid others from having fellowship with that Believer. Rather, even he should not stop fellowshipping with them. No one can impose this upon others, compel the other children of God to take a divisive stand by stating "either fellowship with us or with them; if you are fellowshipping with ‘them’ then stay away from us." Doing this is creating factions and divisions in the Church or Assembly of God.

  • This becomes all the more important when those differences amongst Believers are only personal and between individuals. A person can take the help of the Church to resolve those differences; but is it correct for anyone to impose divisions and factionalism upon the other members of the Church because of them? Even if the differences are related to the functioning and matters of the Church, if they have not been resolved in the manner instructed by the Lord in Matthew 18:15-17; then no one can impose this segregation. Moreover, God's Word teaches all Believers to forgive, be reconciled, and restore the errant Believer back into fellowship (2 Corinthians 2:5-9; 2 Thessalonians 3:14-15). Then why should the walls of divisions be put up and kept up, and why should others be compelled to either maintain those differences, or else get separated from the Assembly.

  • God has given the criteria to separate from or avoid some Believers (Romans 16:17; 1 Corinthians 5:11; 2 Thessalonians 3:6-15; 1 Timothy 6:3-5; 2 John 1:10). But other than these God given criteria, no one has the right to or authority to create and impose their own contrived criteria and methods for segregation amongst Believers in God's Church, upon God's children. Rather, Romans 16:17 instructs the Believers to avoid those who cause divisions and factions in the Church.

  • Is any man, or a group of men holier than God, purer than Him; or, can be? If God’s holiness and purity is not tarnished by fellowshipping with sinful Believers, then how can any sinful person’s holiness and purity get tarnished, be adversely affected by fellowshipping with some other similarly sinful Christian Believer, with whom they are not in agreement; how can fellowshipping with him be called “compromising”? In any case if we are all going to live together in the same heaven with the same Lord, then why not start doing it now and here on earth, instead of harming our blessings, and of others by our obstinate unBiblical behavior?

God does not want any man-made barriers and divisive walls amongst His children, in His Church. Rather, He wants to see people and churches break down all walls of separation, and be reconciled with each other in the spirit of love and forgiveness.

Emphatically exhorting others to share the Gospel daily, live with mutual love and harmony, forgive others, while simultaneously promoting or maintaining separation and differences in the Churches and amongst Church members, the children of God, and not allowing reconciliation to happen is hypocrisy. When we cannot love the children of God, the members of our God given family, how can we claim to love the children of the world (Matthew 5:22-24; 1 John 4:20)? Being the children of God, if we cannot live in love and forgiveness with each other, cannot be reconciled with each other, then how can we truthfully preach the Gospel of love, forgiveness, and reconciliation to others?

From the next article we will begin considering the Christian Believer’s stewardship of gifts of the Holy Spirit.

If you have not yet accepted the discipleship of the Lord, make your decision in favor of the Lord Jesus now to ensure your eternal life and heavenly blessings. Where there is obedience to the Lord, where there is respect and obedience to His Word, there is also the blessing and protection of the Lord. Voluntarily repent of your sins and ask the Lord Jesus for forgiveness of your sins, voluntarily and sincerely, surrender yourself to Him - is the only way to salvation and heavenly life.

Appropriately Handling God’s Word – 21

We have been learning from the examples and life of Paul about utilizing God’s Word and handling it, and of late have started considering 2 Corinthians 4:1-5 for this. Having seen verse 1, we are now on verse 2 for the past few articles. We saw earlier that in this verse, Paul states three characteristics, and the purposes of his ministry of God’s Word. We have seen the purposes in the previous articles, and will look into the characteristics from today. The three characteristics of Paul’s ministry, as given in this verse are:

  • Having renounced the hidden things of shame

  • Not walking in craftiness

  • Not handling the Word of God deceitfully

The first characteristic that Paul states about himself and his co-workers is, “we have renounced the hidden things of shame”. Compare this with what Paul says about himself, in context of his life before coming to faith in Christ, when he lived and functioned as a very zealous Pharisee, learned in the Scriptures – our present-day Old Testament, doing things according to his own understanding of the Scriptures, “though I also might have confidence in the flesh. If anyone else thinks he may have confidence in the flesh, I more so: circumcised the eighth day, of the stock of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, a Hebrew of the Hebrews; concerning the law, a Pharisee; concerning zeal, persecuting the church; concerning the righteousness which is in the law, blameless” (Philippians 3:4-6; also see Acts 26:4-5). We see from this statement of Paul that his background and qualifications were well known to all, people knew very well that on the grounds of his religiosity, he was faultless and beyond any criticism.

Having accepted the Lord Jesus as his savior, he immediately started preaching about Him being the Son of God, the promised Messiah (Acts 9:20, 27, 29), and his preaching this was also from the same Scriptures (Acts 17:2), that were the basis of his opposing and persecuting earlier. In other words, before and after his conversion, there was nothing in Paul’s life that was hidden from society, was immoral, or was socially unacceptable, or was worthy of criticism in any manner. And yet, here, in 2 Corinthians 4:2, the first characteristic that he states about his ministry is that he has renounced the hidden things of shame! How can we reconcile these two seemingly contradictory statements of Paul about himself?

The key to reconciling and understanding this apparent discrepancy or contradiction is in the beginning of Philippians 3:4, “though I also might have confidence in the flesh.” Before coming to faith in the Lord and accepting Him as his savior and Lord, Paul’s zeal and works were based on his ‘works of the flesh’, i.e., his own abilities, education, background, and support from other men – the acceptance and affirmation he had from the religious authorities. Based on what he thought and had been taught as being correct, he did what seemed appropriate and worthwhile to him, and he even presumed that it would be right and acceptable in the sight of God as well. Paul admits that his misguided zeal and inappropriate tendencies had made him an opponent of the Lord Jesus and a persecutor of the Lord’s people, making him exceedingly enraged against them, a blasphemer and an insolent person (Acts 26:9-11; 1 Corinthians 15:9; Philippians 3:6; 1 Timothy 1:13). After coming to faith in the Lord Jesus, this mentality of doing things according to his own ‘flesh’, i.e., according to his own will and understanding, his own concepts of right and wrong, immediately changed. Paul became humble, submissive, and fully obedient not any person but only to the Lord (Acts 9:5-6; 26:19). In other words, willing to do whatever the Lord had set for him, asked him to say or do, at whatever cost it may be (Acts 9:15-16). So much so, that because of this change that had come in him, those religious leaders who used to support him, use him, now became his opponents, wanting to kill him; but Paul did not fear them, never hesitated or vacillated in speaking the truth before everyone, nor did he ever step back from telling, teachings, and preaching that which was Scripturally correct (Acts 26:6, 19-22).

Because of his this former “confidence in the flesh” and its manifestations in his behavior, he considered himself to be the least of the Apostles, not even worthy of being called and Apostle (1 Corinthians 15:8-9), and called himself the ‘chief of sinners’ (1 Timothy 1:15). Notice also that Paul’s arrogance, aggression, and other such actions were the external manifestation of the internal errors he was living with. Once his internal situation got corrected through coming to faith in the Lord, becoming submissive and obedient to Him, the external manifestations of the internal problems also automatically got corrected. Therefore, Paul calls them the ‘hidden things of shame’ - he was good and beyond reproach before the people. But the internal unseen short-comings that created the problems in his outside behavior, had made him a severe problem for himself, as well as others. When his ‘hidden’ got corrected, the ‘evident’ also got corrected automatically.

These are the ‘hidden things of shame’ that Paul straightaway renounced on coming to faith in Christ Jesus. Paul gave up his ‘confidence in the flesh’, i.e., on relying on his own judgments and decisions based on his own abilities and education; on following men and their teachings for their stature. Paul gave up his arrogance and imposing lifestyle; he became humble and longsuffering, patiently putting up with the faults and shortcomings in God’s children and gently correcting them, instead of going after them with a stick, or casting them away, or separating himself from them when they fell short of his expectations, or in their following the Lord in any way. He became obedient to the will of the Lord, seeking and learning from the Lord what to say, to whom to say, when and where to say instead of doing his ministry the way he felt it ought to be done. Now, he did not only speak and preach about love, forgiveness, and reconciliation. Rather, he actively became engaged in bringing down the walls of separation instead of building them up, and labored to bring about practical unity instead of just preaching about it.

We learn from Paul that this then is the first characteristic that a minister of God’s Word should have – put away all confidence of the flesh; and be humble, patient, longsuffering; become completely obedient to the Lord for the ministry that God wants him to do. Peter too said the same in 1 Peter 2:1-2; i.e., to desire and grow by the pure milk of the Word, one has to first put aside all malice, deceit, hypocrisy, envy, and evil speaking – an internal change has to come first, which will then manifest as changed behavior externally.

If you have not yet accepted the discipleship of the Lord, make your decision in favor of the Lord Jesus now to ensure your eternal life and heavenly blessings. Where there is obedience to the Lord, where there is respect and obedience to His Word, there is also the blessing and protection of the Lord. Repenting of your sins, and asking the Lord Jesus for forgiveness of your sins, voluntarily and sincerely, surrendering yourself to Him - is the only way to salvation and heavenly life.
