Teachings Related to the Gospel – 3

In this series on Christian’s growth through God’s Word, in the preliminary considerations, we had seen that the history of the Church, especially of the first Church, very clearly shows us that the preaching, teaching, and obedience of the pure, unadulterated Word of God resulted in a rapid spread of the Christian Faith, of spiritual maturity of the Christian Believers, and the establishing and growth the Church or Assemblies all over the world. The Bible also teaches that a proper ministry of God’s Word amongst the Christian Believers, and in the Church is necessary for the spiritual maturity of the Believers and the growth of the Church. We have also seen that for this to happen there are three categories of Biblical teachings that are essential and ought to be given amongst Believers and in Churches. These categories are, teachings related to the gospel, about the six basic principles, and those about Christian living. Of these three categories, we have begun considering and learning from the Bible about the first one, teachings related to the gospel.

We have seen so far that the gospel is not about any earthly or temporal gains or prosperity, but about the Kingdom of God, which has been made available by God to everyone, including the poor and the oppressed, through the work and ministry of God’s Son, the Lord Jesus Christ. The Lord Jesus began His earthly ministry by preaching the gospel, and the beginning of His ministry also marked the beginning of the end times. In the last article we have seen that for the gospel to be effective two things, sincere repentance and believing in the gospel, both are essential; and that we will learn about both of them from the Bible. We have first started to learn what the Bible says about repentance, and then we will take up learning what it means to believe.

In context of the Lord Jesus’s earthly ministry and the gospel in God’s Word, when we look up about repentance, we realise how essential, and integral to the efficacy of the gospel the preaching and practice of sincere repentance is. Consider the following:

  • The first and main subject of the preaching and ministry of the forerunner of the Lord Jesus, John the Baptist, to prepare the people for the ministry of the Lord Jesus, was repentance from sins (Matthew 3:1-2). He only baptized those who confessed their sins (Matthew 3:6); and refused to baptize the Pharisees who wanted to get it done perfunctorily, asking them to first demonstrate repentance in their lives (Matthew 3:7-12).

  • Repentance was the opening subject of the preaching and ministry of the Lord Jesus (Mark 1:15). It was also a part of the last instructions given by the Lord to His disciples before His ascension (Luke 24:47). So, the Lord Jesus’s earthly ministry began and closed with preaching about repentance, and He handed over the same to His disciples to carry forth into the world.

  • The disciples of the Lord Jesus, when they were first sent out for ministry by the Lord, they preached about repentance during their ministry (Mark 6:7-12).

  • Repentance was the subject of Peter’s first sermon on the day of Pentecost to the devout Jews (Acts 2:5) gathered in Jerusalem to fulfil the Law (Acts 2:37-38), through which the first Church was born. This is something very important to note; it was these devout Jews who had come to fulfil the Law, who, on hearing Peter’s sermon were cut to the heart. In other words, through Peter’s sermon they realized the inadequacy and futility of their gathering in Jerusalem to fulfil the rituals; and it is to them that Peter exhorts that they must repent of their sins. This clearly implies that their being devout, and their fulfilling the requirements of the Law, was not enough; and even they in their hearts realized this, therefore they cried out to know from Peter, what was it that they needed to do to fill this void within them.

  • Repentance and faith towards the Lord Jesus were the subjects of the ministry of Paul, after his conversion (Acts 20:21).

  • Repentance was the theme of the preaching, even of the prophets of the Old Testament (Jeremiah 25:4-5).

It is often seen that people say they have repented, said the prayer for repentance, and have come to believe in the gospel, but their lives do not affirm their claims. How then, can we know about the genuineness of one’s repentance? The Bible shows us that genuine repentance is accompanied by some things that affirms the genuineness of the repentance. We will see about this in the next article.

If you have not yet accepted the discipleship of the Lord, make your decision in favor of the Lord Jesus now to ensure your eternal life and heavenly blessings. Where there is obedience to the Lord, where there is respect and obedience to His Word, there is also the blessing and protection of the Lord. Voluntarily repent of your sins, and ask the Lord Jesus for forgiveness of your sins, voluntarily and sincerely surrender yourself to Him - this is the only way to salvation and heavenly life. You only have to say a short but sincere prayer to the Lord Jesus Christ willingly and with a penitent heart, and at the same time completely commit and submit your life to Him. You can also make this prayer and submission in words something like, “Lord Jesus, I am sorry for my sins and repent of them. I thank you for taking my sins upon yourself, paying for them through your life.  Because of them you died on the cross in my place, were buried, and you rose again from the grave on the third day for my salvation, and today you are the living Lord God and have freely provided to me the forgiveness, and redemption from my sins, through faith in you. Please forgive my sins, take me under your care, and make me your disciple. I submit my life into your hands." Your one prayer from a sincere and committed heart will make your present and future life, in this world and in the hereafter, heavenly and blessed for eternity.

Worship – For Effective Gospel Preaching (1)

Discussion Audio                      Discussion Video

For the past few articles, we have been looking at the benefits and gains of worshipping God, and why God wants His people to primarily be worshippers, and not just those who only pray. In the last two articles we have seen how worshipping makes our prayers effective and also helps in developing and maintaining our trust in God; which, in turn, makes us far less vulnerable to Satan’s ploys of making us fall into sin because of doubts and unbelief about God, about His Word, and His works. Today we will look at another benefit related to our practical Christian life of faith in the Lord Jesus, i.e., spreading the Gospel of salvation through voluntarily coming into faith in the Lord Jesus. Doing this is mandatory for the disciples of the Lord Jesus, since it is the Lord’s commandment for all of His disciples (Matthew 28:19-20; Acts 1:8).

This is contrary to the quite commonly held belief in the churches that doing this is for the Pastors or those with Seminary training, and not for the general church congregation! When the Lord Jesus gave this commandment, there were no Seminaries nor any training courses, but every Believer was to do it whatever be the circumstances (Acts 8:3-4). It was the Lord’s commandment that all those who become His disciples by faith, should also spread the good news of salvation. We can do this as merely fulfilling a formality, i.e., simply as a duty to be fulfilled, therefore ineffectively and vainly; or we can do it meaningfully and effectively. For those who become the Lord’s disciples, this ministry of preaching and spreading the Gospel is made effective through not just praying, but also through worshipping God, as we see from the examples given in God’s Word, the Bible.

The Lord Jesus, in context of His crucifixion had said that when He is lifted up, He will draw people to Him (John 12:32); but this also has a figurative implication – when we exalt the Lord, when we lift Him up on high in and through our lives, behavior, and words, that attracts the people to Him, and preaching the Gospel becomes easier and more effective.

We see in the instance of Paul and Silas in jail in Philippi, in Acts 16 – when they sang, praised and worshipped the Lord in their painful and adverse situation – a situation in which people usually use foul language and derogatory expressions against God, not only were they set free from their own bonds, but they could draw the Jailer and his family to the Lord, and the Church in Philippi started off. Had Paul and Silas not been worshipping, even if they had just remained silent in their pain and discomfort, the Jailer and the prisoners would not have got attracted to the Lord. It was worship that not only set them free from their bonds, but also opened the hearts of the hearers, to receive Jesus as Lord – worship made sharing the gospel easier and effective.

We will continue with other examples from God's Word the Bible in the next article as well.

If you have not yet accepted the discipleship of the Lord Jesus, then to ensure your eternal life and heavenly rewards, take a decision in favor of the Lord Jesus now. Wherever there is surrender and obedience towards the Lord Jesus, the Lord’s blessings and safety are also there. If you are still not Born Again, have not obtained salvation, or have not asked the Lord Jesus for forgiveness for your sins, then you have the opportunity to do so right now. A short prayer said voluntarily with a sincere heart, with heartfelt repentance for your sins, and a fully submissive attitude, “Lord Jesus, I confess that I have disobeyed You, and have knowingly or unknowingly, in mind, in thought, in attitude, and in deeds, committed sins. I believe that you have fully borne the punishment of my sins by your sacrifice on the cross, and have paid the full price of those sins for all eternity. Please forgive my sins, change my heart and mind towards you, and make me your disciple, take me with you." God longs for your company and wants to see you blessed, but to make this possible, is your personal decision. Will you not say this prayer now, while you have the time and opportunity to do so – the decision is yours.

Worship – 6

English Translation

The Necessity of Worshipping (1)

Click Here for a discussion on Today's Article:

Discussion Audio                     Discussion Video

In our study on worshipping God, we have seen that prayer and worshipping are two methods of communicating with God. In prayer, we ask from God, while in worship we give to God. Worship can be by offering material things to God, and by offering our words to God. Worship through words can be in the form of Thanking God, Praising God, and Exalting God. Commonly, people start off by learning to pray; most stay only at this stage. Some progress to Thanking God, a few more rise further and start Praising God, and rare are the ones who actually Exalt God and glorify Him in their worship. In the previous articles, we have seen about these three expressions of worship. Today, we will examine another aspect of worshipping God – The Necessity of Worship; i.e., why should a Christian Believer Worship God, and not just pray to God?

Whether in prayer, or in worshipping, we come into the presence of God, to communicate with Him. Without coming into the presence of the Lord God, we cannot even offer our prayers to Him. With this in mind, consider a few related verses from the Word of God:

  • Exodus 34:20 “…And none shall appear before Me empty-handed.”
  • Deuteronomy 16:16 “Three times a year all your males shall appear before the Lord your God in the place which He chooses: at the Feast of Unleavened Bread, at the Feast of Weeks, and at the Feast of Tabernacles; and they shall not appear before the Lord empty-handed.”
  • Psalm 107:8 - "Oh, that men would give thanks to the Lord for His goodness, And for His wonderful works to the children of men!"
  • Philippians 4:6-7 "Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God, and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus."
  • Psalms 50:15 “Call upon Me in the day of trouble; I will deliver you, and you shall glorify Me.”

It is apparent from these verses that those who come before God, must also have something to offer to Him; it is God’s commandment. The Israelites who came to celebrate the Feasts ordained by God, had to bring an offering to offer to the Lord God; they were forbidden to appear before Him empty-handed. God wants that people should understand and acknowledge the goodness that God has towards them, and the good that He does for them, and be thankful to God for it. Prayers made to God have to be offered with thanksgiving, i.e., the Christian Believer has to approach God not as a beggar with a begging bowl, but as a Priest of God – a position already granted by God to every Believer (1 Peter 2:9; Revelation 1:6). It is when we approach God with this understanding and acknowledgement of what He has done for us, is doing for us, that we will also have His peace guarding our hearts and mind, in each and every situation that we may be in. People pray and expect God to deliver them from their circumstances, from their troubles; but how many, after their being delivered actually turn back to God to thank Him? We see from Psalm 50:5 that God commands being thankful or grateful to Him for His help; He has to be glorified; His help and deliverance has to be publicly acknowledged. The Lord Jesus re-iterated this same thought in Luke 17:12-19, where out of the ten lepers who were healed, only one, a Samaritan, returned to thank Him for His graciousness; the Lord pointedly asked in verse 17 “...Were there not ten cleansed? But where are the nine?”

We will continue learning about the necessity of worshipping in the next article as well, and will consider the classical verses often quoted and used in context of worshipping, John 4:23-24. But for now, ponder over your communications with God; are you just limited to only asking, or merely saying a polite ‘thank you’ to the merciful, loving, compassionate, patient heavenly Father? He wants to see you far more blessed than this; bot for that to happen, you need to be in a correct relationship with Him, voluntarily, as His child, need to become a part of His family. This is only possible by believing on the Lord Jesus and accepting His work of salvation done for saving you.

The Holy Communion – 105

English Translation

Implications of Participation (3)

In the previous articles we have seen that participating in the Lord’s Table is not a ritual that can be indulged in according to rules or traditions of any denomination, sect, or group. In the last article, from 1 Corinthians 10:16-22 we have seen that God’s Word prescribes, and God expects that the participants in His Holy Communion will live a life and behave differently than the people of the world; doing this is mandatory for them. From this passage we had seen two implications that for those who partake of the Lord’s Table, i.e., – living a life of communion or fellowship with the Lord, and unity amongst the participants; and one responsibility i.e., of living a life of separation from the world, are stated here. We had then seen further that through participation in the Holy Communion, the participants affirm and renew their commitment of being, and living in close fellowship with the Lord Jesus. We had considered the first implication in the previous articles; today we will look at the second implication.

The second implication of participating in the Lord’s Holy Communion is that the participants have to live in unity, as it says in 1 Corinthians 10:17. In verse 16 too, through the use of singular ‘cup’ and singular ‘bread’, the same thing was shown, and is stated more clearly in verse 17. When we study the institution of the Lord’s Table by the Lord Jesus as given in the Gospel accounts, there too, the Lord took one bread and gave it to His disciples, for all of them to eat from that one bread; and similarly, He took one cup, and asked the disciples to drink from that one cup. The Lord’s implication of doing this, of using one bread and one cup, is stated in verse 17 here, “For we, though many, are one bread and one body; for we all partake of that one bread.” The one bread represents the one body of the Lord Jesus, by partaking in that one bread, the partakers denote their unity, their being joined together through the Lord Jesus, now as one body of the Lord Himself. This is then further explained in verse 18 through the use of an Old Testament act of worship, as an example. Those who ate of the sacrifices made on the altar, were thereby united not only with the altar, but even amongst themselves – note the use of singular Israel at the beginning of this verse, instead of using a term like “the Israelites”, or “the Jews”, or some other plural expression.

The Born-Again Christian Believers are said to be the body and bride of Christ (Ephesians 5:23-27) and not ‘bodies and brides.’ It was unimaginable for the Jews to even communicate with the Gentiles (Acts 10:28), let alone ever be united with them. But in Ephesians 2:11-22, Paul, through the Holy Spirit explains, emphasizes, and exhorts for this very unity between the Jewish and Gentile Believers, effected through the Lord Jesus. The Church started off with this understanding of unity (Acts 2:44-47). Paul, in this letter of 1 Corinthians, starts of by exhorting the Corinthian Church members to stop their divisive tendencies and remain united (1 Corinthians 1:10-13); and then in the section on correcting their errors and misunderstandings about the holy Communion (1 Corinthians 11:17-34), he starts off the discourse by re-emphasizing maintaining this unity (11:17-19).

In the next article we will continue to consider this further.
