The Holy Communion – 67

English Translation

The Lord’s Table - Always Trust God & Remain Thankful

We have seen in the earlier articles that to rectify the errors that had crept into the Corinthian Church because of their mishandling the Holy Communion, and thereby denigrating it, and also despising the Church (1 Corinthians 11:20-22); to bring them out of the situation they had got themselves into, the Holy Spirit through the Apostle Paul, recounts to them the manner of initiation of the Lord’s Table, by the Lord Jesus. We have seen here, as well as in the Gospel accounts, that the Holy Communion, though established with the elements, i.e., the bread and cup being used in the Passover meal, but it was a separate event by itself. The Holy Communion established by the Lord was not the Passover meal itself, but He did it during or after He and the disciples had eaten the Passover meal. Therefore, a bit of information presented here, as well as in the Gospel accounts, related to the Lord’s initiating the Holy Communion, is intriguing. It says here, in 1 Corinthians 11:23-24 that taking the bread, the Lord Jesus gave thanks, then broke it and gave it to the disciples as a symbol of His body broken for them. Luke also records it as giving thanks (Luke 22:19), while Matthew and Mark say that He blessed it (Matthew 26:26; Mark 14:22). Whether the Lord said thanks or whether He blessed it, essentially it conveys that the Lord was grateful to God for it; for a symbol of His body being broken for others, for the disciples who while sitting to have the Passover meal, were still quarrelling about who was greater amongst them (Luke 22:24), for the sinful people of the world.

The giving of thanks or blessing the bread could not be the ‘grace’ we say at the beginning of the meal; He could not be thanking God for the meal, nor could be blessing the food they were to partake, since the main meal had already begun, and thanks or blessings for it would have been done at its beginning. Moreover, what the Lord was doing was giving the disciples only a symbolic presentation, and not a full meal. Then, as is apparent from this as well as the Gospel accounts, it is specifically mentioned that He thanked or blessed the bread, and then called it the symbol of His body broken for them. So, in essence, the Lord was thanking God for, or blessing for what He would be going through and suffering in a short while, His taking up the sins of mankind upon Himself, becoming sin, the breaking of His body for the sins of mankind and mankind’s deliverance from sins. To voluntarily agree to suffer all this for others, in the place of others is by itself unimaginable for any person, but to be thanking God, blessing for permitting it to happen and lead through such excruciating experiences, is inexplicable, beyond human understanding. Yet, here the Lord through His personal example shows and teaches us to be thankful to God for everything, in all circumstances; once again by first demonstrating it through His own life, then to be emulated by His disciples.

The disciple of the Lord Jesus, a Born-Again Christian Believer has to follow the Lord’s example, and trust God that He will, in and through all experiences and circumstances, only do that, or get done that which is beneficial for His children; even though the thing may seem difficult to understand and painful at the moment; i.e., God will always fulfill Romans 8:28 for His people. This is something demonstrated by God’s people like Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego (Daniel 3:16-30), Daniel (Daniel 6:12-28). Also, God has instructed that His people should always be rejoicing in Him, since the joy of the Lord is our strength (Nehemiah 8:10); and should always pray and bring our petitions to God with thanksgiving (Philippians 4:4, 6). The participants of the Lord’s Table should be the ones who always trust Him for everything, in all circumstances (2 Timothy 1:12), and are always thankful to Him, for whatever He may allow in our lives, however He may lead us in life. Partaking of the Lord’s Table should be a time of renewing our faith and trust in the Lord, of learning to be happy and rejoicing in the Lord always.

If you are a Christian Believer and have been participating in the Lord’s Table, then please examine your life and make sure that you are actually a disciple of the Lord, i.e., are redeemed from your sins, have submitted and surrendered your life to the Lord Jesus to live in obedience to Him and His Word. You should also always, like the Berean Believers, first check and test all teachings that you receive from the Word of God, and only after ascertaining the truth and veracity of the teachings brought to you by men, should you accept and obey them (Acts 17:11; 1 Thessalonians 5:21). If you do not do this, the false apostles and prophets sent by Satan as ministers of Christ (2 Corinthians 11:13-15), will by their trickery, cunningness, and craftiness render you ineffective for the Lord and cause severe damage to your Christian life and your rewards.

If you have not yet accepted the discipleship of the Lord Jesus, then to ensure your eternal life and heavenly rewards, take a decision in favor of the Lord Jesus now. Wherever there is surrender and obedience towards the Lord Jesus, the Lord’s blessings and safety are also there. If you are still not Born Again, have not obtained salvation, or have not asked the Lord Jesus for forgiveness for your sins, then you have the opportunity to do so right now. A short prayer said voluntarily with a sincere heart, with heartfelt repentance for your sins, and a fully submissive attitude, “Lord Jesus, I confess that I have disobeyed You, and have knowingly or unknowingly, in mind, in thought, in attitude, and in deeds, committed sins. I believe that you have fully borne the punishment of my sins by your sacrifice on the cross, and have paid the full price of those sins for all eternity. Please forgive my sins, change my heart and mind towards you, and make me your disciple, take me with you." God longs for your company and wants to see you blessed, but to make this possible, is your personal decision. Will you not say this prayer now, while you have the time and opportunity to do so - the decision is yours.

The Four Pillars of Christian Living - 3 - Breaking of Bread (6)

To Listen to this message in English Click Here

In previous articles we have seen that in order to live a practical Christian life, the early Christian Believers steadfastly followed the four things given in Acts 2:42, also known as the “Pillars of the Christian life.” Presently, in our study we are looking at and learning from 1 Corinthians 11:17-34 about the third of these four pillars, i.e., the “breaking of bread,” or, partaking of the Lord's Supper or in the Lord's Table. In the previous article, we learned from verse 23 of this section that Paul had made it clear that the instructions he is giving regarding the Lord's Supper are not of his own imagination or notions, but are instructions he has received from the Lord. Implying that to ignore the instructions written by him, is to ignore the instructions given by the Lord. The Holy Spirit had to give these instructions through Paul, because the Christian Believers in Corinth had distorted the form, observance, and meaning of the Lord's Supper; and had made changes in them according to their own desires and thinking. The ill effects of their doing this had also started becoming apparent in that church. The Holy Spirit had Paul write down the corrections required for the Corinthian Believers; and these were also made a part of God's firmly established and unalterable Word, for the future Christians and churches. We learnt from this that the Lord's Supper is to be taken in the form, by the method, and the purpose that was given by the Lord at the time of its establishment; else the consequences will have to be suffered. Today we will go further, and look at one of the implications of the Lord's Table.

4. Lords instructions for the Holy communion – The purposes - verses 23-26 - (part 2)

It is written by the Holy Spirit in 1 Corinthians 11:24-25 that the Lord's table is a table of thanksgiving. The same is also written in Matthew 26:26-28 and Mark 14:22-24; where we see that at the time of the establishment of this table, Lord Jesus blessed and broke the bread, and gave thanks for the cup, then gave it to the disciples. Contrary to popular belief, this blessing and thanksgiving over the bread and cup was not the one with which we begin a meal. In Matthew 26:21, 26 and Mark 14:18, 22 we read that the Passover meal had already begun; and it is written in John 13:4 that the Lord rose from the meal to wash the feet of the disciples. So, as we saw in the article on Judas Iscariot not partaking of the table, the Lord's Table was established by the Lord during the eating of the Passover meal. Therefore, the prayers of thanksgiving and blessings that are asked for the food must have already been done at the time of the beginning of that meal. Therefore, it is evident that the thanksgiving and blessing that the Lord asked at the time of breaking the bread and giving the cup to the disciples was not the blessing and prayer offered at the beginning of the meal; they were different from that. The Lord also called the bread that was broken His body, and the wine that was in the cup His blood. This shows that the Lord was thanking God the Father, and was asking for blessings, for the breaking of His body and the shedding of His blood. Through this we can understand that before giving the representations of His body and blood to the disciples, the Lord Jesus thanked God and asked for His blessing:

·   For his life and ministry.

·   For sending Him in human flesh to be sacrificed (Hebrews 10:5).

·   For using Him for the salvation of mankind.

·  For all the ridicule and suffering he was going to endure in a short time, to fulfill God's plan.

The Lord Jesus had taught His disciples that they would face hatred, humiliation, opposition, and sufferings because of being His followers. And had said that when this happens, they should not be sad, but should rejoice, be joyful (Luke 6:22-23). Today the Lord was practically demonstrating this teaching to them, was applying it to Himself. We see that later, the disciples too did the same (Acts 5:40-41); and Peter taught the same thing once again in his letter (1 Peter 4:13-16). What lessons do we take from this for ourselves regarding partaking of the Lord's table? A little pondering over makes it apparent that participating in the Lord's Supper is not just the fulfillment of a ritual, nor is it a formality. Rather, the Lord's table is for:

·  Those who have handed themselves over to God the Father to use them as He sees fit to fulfill His purposes and for His glory.

·  Those who are fully submitted and committed to being used by God, for His plans for the good of mankind; no matter what price they may have to pay, and no matter what they may have to suffer for this.

·  Those who place and maintain their trust in God in every situation and for everything. Whether or not they understand it, but they never doubt God about anything, nor are disappointed.

·  Those who are always thankful to God for everything (1 Thessalonians 5:18), because they trust that in the end God will make everything work for their good (Romans 8:28).

And we see the above things fulfilled in the lives of not only these disciples of the Lord, but later in the lives of the true, committed Christian Believers, at any time and anywhere in the world. Those who have been treating the Lord's Table lightly, as a ritual, as a formality, should seriously ponder over the teachings of the Word of God, and also over their own notions; and correct what needs to be corrected in their lives before participating in the Lord's table. In the next article we will proceed from here, and look at this topic further.

If you have not yet accepted the discipleship of the Lord, make your decision in favor of the Lord Jesus now to ensure your eternal life and heavenly blessings. Where there is obedience to the Lord, where there is respect and obedience to His Word, there is also the blessing and protection of the Lord. Repenting of your sins, and asking the Lord Jesus for forgiveness of your sins, voluntarily and sincerely, surrendering yourself to Him - is the only way to salvation and heavenly life. You only have to say a short but sincere prayer to the Lord Jesus Christ willingly and with a penitent heart, and at the same time completely commit and submit your life to Him. You can also make this prayer and submission in words something like, “Lord Jesus, I am sorry for my sins and repent of them. I thank you for taking my sins upon yourself, paying for them through your life.  Because of them you died on the cross in my place, were buried, and you rose again from the grave on the third day for my salvation, and today you are the living Lord God and have freely provided to me the forgiveness, and redemption from my sins, through faith in you. Please forgive my sins, take me under your care, and make me your disciple. I submit my life into your hands." Your one prayer from a sincere and committed heart will make your present and future life, in this world and in the hereafter, heavenly and blessed for eternity.
