Preliminary Considerations – 3

We are now studying a Christian Believer’s growth through proper study and utilization of God’s Word, the Bible. In the preceding articles we have seen that the Bible teaches the paramount importance of a proper ministry of God’s Word for the growth of the Christian Believers and the Church. We saw that in the first century the rapid growth and establishment of Churches and Christian Believers all over the world was mainly because of a proper ministry of the unadulterated, uncorrupted Word of God. On the other hand, whenever and wherever there was a shortcoming in the ministry of God's Word, it adversely affected the growth of the Church and of the Christian Believers. This shortcoming in the ministry of the Word can be in quantity as well as quality, i.e., quantitatively, teachings inadequate in/or number and frequency; and qualitatively, teachings that adulterate God’s Word with human thoughts and wisdom.

The importance of properly learning God’s Word, and learning it in its purity and truth can be understood by the fact that not only has God placed His Word in our hands, but has also given His Holy Spirit to every Believer to teach the Word (John 14:26). As we saw in the last article, Paul in his farewell address to the Ephesian Believers emphatically reminded them that he had made it a point not to hold back anything from them, and to teach them the whole counsel of God (Acts 20:20, 27). To learn this ‘whole counsel of God,’ the Bible gives us three Categories of Teachings, essential for the spiritual growth and progress of the Believers and the Church. Those entrusted with the ministry of sharing God’s Word should take note and model their ministry accordingly, under the guidance of the Holy Spirit. These three categories are:

First, the Gospel: Preaching the gospel was the basic thing that the disciples of the Lord Jesus were told to do in their ministry for the Lord (Matthew 28:19; Mark 16:15; Luke 24:46-48; Acts 1:8). Paul in concluding his first letter to Corinthians, in which he pointed out their numerous short-comings and errors, and showed them how to correct those errors, towards the conclusion of his letter, brought them back to the gospel - 1 Corinthians 15:1-4. In other words, the gospel is not meant only to bring people to salvation, but it is also the panacea for all problems in personal and Church life. The implication is that if the Believers learn to repeatedly evaluate their lives, beliefs, practices, teachings they have received, etc., against the gospel, they will also learn to identify the right from the wrong, and will not be led astray. Anything that leads them astray from the Lord Jesus’s teachings, in any manner adds to, or takes away from the Lord’s teachings; or makes people trust in anything other than the Lord’s sacrifice on the Cross and His resurrection from the grave, is a wrong teaching. It is not to be accepted or followed, no matter how pious, logical, and attractive it may seem, and no matter who practices, preaches, and teaches it.

Second, the Basic Principles: The author of Hebrews says in Hebrews 5:12 that his audience had deteriorated in their maturity in God’s Word to the point that they required the basic principles be taught to them again. Then in Hebrews 6:1-2 he mentions the six basic topics, the elementary principles, he calls them foundational teachings, therefore they are those that should be taught in all the churches. These six are: 1. Repentance from dead works; 2. Faith towards God, 3. Doctrine of Baptisms, 4. Laying on of hands, 5. Resurrection of dead, 6. Eternal judgment. Forgetting the teachings related to these principles, will produce the same effect as the author of this letter to Hebrews has mentioned – Believers will deteriorate in their spiritual lives, and therefore, the Church will also deteriorate.

Third, regarding Christian living: Some instructions for all the Believers, were determined and established by the Apostles and Elders of Jerusalem under the guidance of the Holy Spirit (Acts 15:28-31); namely, “abstain from things offered to idols, from blood, from things strangled, and from sexual immorality”. They were meant to be followed by all the Churches, were delivered to the Churches, and obeying them resulted in the growth of the Churches (Acts 16:4-5).

It is the responsibility of the Church Elders and those entrusted with the ministry of teaching God’s Word to see that teachings of these three categories are taught and reminded to every Believer, new and old, and to the Church. As it is written in context of the basic principles, in Hebrews 5:11-14, not knowing, or forgetting these foundational Biblical teachings, leads to deterioration of spiritual maturity, makes the Believers “dull of hearing,” and unable to take in solid spiritual food.

In the next article, we will start considering the first of these three kinds of teachings, i.e., about preaching and following the Gospel from God’s Word.

If you have not yet accepted the discipleship of the Lord, make your decision in favor of the Lord Jesus now to ensure your eternal life and heavenly blessings. Where there is obedience to the Lord, where there is respect and obedience to His Word, there is also the blessing and protection of the Lord. Voluntarily repent of your sins and ask the Lord Jesus for forgiveness of your sins, voluntarily and sincerely surrender yourself to Him - this is the only way to salvation and heavenly life. You only have to say a short but sincere prayer to the Lord Jesus Christ willingly and with a penitent heart, and at the same time completely commit and submit your life to Him. You can also make this prayer and submission in words something like, “Lord Jesus, I am sorry for my sins and repent of them. I thank you for taking my sins upon yourself, paying for them through your life.  Because of them you died on the cross in my place, were buried, and you rose again from the grave on the third day for my salvation, and today you are the living Lord God and have freely provided to me the forgiveness, and redemption from my sins, through faith in you. Please forgive my sins, take me under your care, and make me your disciple. I submit my life into your hands." Your one prayer from a sincere and committed heart will make your present and future life, in this world and in the hereafter, heavenly and blessed for eternity.

Blessed and Successful Life - 17 - Be Stewards of God’s Word – 2

Implications of the Nature of God’s Word - 1

In the previous article we have seen how The Bible is unique, can neither be seen as, nor compared with any other book of the world, since it is God breathed, written under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit of God, it is the living Word of God that interacts and communicates, and is a form of the Lord Jesus Christ Himself (John 1:1, 14; 2 Timothy 3:16-17), that has been placed in our hands for a certain purpose. These Biblical facts are seldom realized and acknowledged by most people; even by most of the Bible reading and Bible believing Christians. Therefore, it is every Christian Believer’s responsibility, his stewardship to ensure that God’s Living Word The Bible is given its due honor and reverence. This stewardship means ensuring that The Bible and its truths are never tampered with, are not misused, misinterpreted, mishandled, and are always presented in their actual form to others.

For now, we will first look at some very important implications that are inherent in this understanding about the form and nature of God’s Word The Bible that we have seen in the previous article. Then, later, we will consider the various ways in which Satan induces, often subtly and inadvertently, the commonly seen wrong practices and understandings about the Bible and about the things written in it. These errors are then preached and propagated through the ministry of the Word of God. These errors can even be seen in and through the ministry of some quite knowledgeable, well-known, well-respected, well-meaning, pious, committed Born-Again Christian Believers, preachers and teachers of God’s Word.

Now, we have the complete Word of God in our hands, which was not so in the Old Testament times. At that time God spoke to His people through His Prophets and chosen people. God spoke to them either directly, or through visions and dreams, to communicate what He wanted to say to them and through them (Numbers 12:6; Daniel 1:17; 7:1). In other words, God did not communicate with everyone directly, but only through a few that were chosen by Him for the benefit of all. The Holy Spirit had the Prophets and chosen people of God write what was spoken to them as individual books; which were then used as the Scriptures by the Jews. Even the Lord Jesus in His earthly ministry read from and quoted from these inspired writings (Luke 4:3-12, 16-21).

So, even in the Old Testament times, God did not speak with everyone and anyone, but only to and through His chosen few. But He communicated with the general population and His people the Israelites, through His Prophets and He made available their writings to the people, and also for posterity, to teach them about Himself, show them His will, guide and instruct them, and correct them (Deuteronomy 6:1-9; Joshua 1:8; 1 Samuel 3:21; 2 Chronicles 34:18-19, 21, 24-27). At the time of the first Church, in the first century AD, the Gospels, the Letters, and other books were written; again through a few – the Apostles and others chosen by God, for the benefit of all. All of these Old and New Testament writings were compiled together under the guidance and inspiration of the Holy Spirit to provide for us the completed Word of God which we know as and call “The Bible.”

In the next article we will continue considering about the nature of God’s Word and the implications. But for now, think it over - are you directly in touch with God and His Word? Or, are you in touch with God on the basis of some other person’s understanding and interpretations of God’s Word? God wants to be in touch with you directly, not through any other person.

If you have not yet accepted the discipleship of the Lord, make your decision in favor of the Lord Jesus now to ensure your eternal life and heavenly blessings. Where there is obedience to the Lord, where there is respect and obedience to His Word, there is also the blessing and protection of the Lord. Repenting of your sins, and asking the Lord Jesus for forgiveness of your sins, voluntarily and sincerely, surrendering yourself to Him - is the only way to salvation and heavenly life.

Substance and Nature of God’s Word

Review: At the beginning of this series, we had seen from 1 Kings 2:2-4, where David, towards the end of his life, was instructing his son and heir, Solomon, about four things, so that he would lead a blessed and successful life, through the guidance and support of God. The second, of these four instructions given by David was that Solomon must be a worthy steward of all that God has given to him. From this, in the past few articles we have seen about Christian stewardship, and what it means to be an unworthy steward of God. We had also seen that every truly Born-Again Christian Believer, from the moment of coming to faith in Lord Jesus is automatically, also God’s steward (1 Peter 4:10-11); and eventually, will give an account of his life and stewardship to the Lord (Romans 14:12; 2 Corinthians 5:10). God has assigned some work or ministry to every Christian Believer (Ephesians 2:10), and has given everyone the appropriate provisions to carry out the assigned work (Ephesians 4:7–8; Hebrews 2:4). These have been given to guide, help, and enable them to fulfill their stewardship, to every Christian Believer. God has given at least four things to every Believer; These are: His Word, His Holy Spirit, Church Fellowship as His child and family member, and an appropriate gift for the person’s God assigned ministry. From today, we will start considering our stewardship of the first of these four provisions of God, i.e., God' s Word.

Before understanding about the stewardship of God’s Word, we will do well to understand what God’s Word is, its role in the life of a Christian Believer, and why we need to be good stewards of God’s Word.

The Bible is no ordinary book; it is known as the Living Word - and as any living person, it communicates and interacts with those who honor it, believe in it, trust what is written in it and what it is saying to them. Neither is the Bible a record of the meditations, discussions, and deliberations of some people. The whole of the Bible is ‘God breathed’, i.e., written down by men under the inspiration and guidance of God’s Holy Spirit (2 Samuel 23:2; 2 Timothy 3:16; 2 Peter 1:20-21). There were times when the authors did not understand what they were being inspired to write down what they were writing; but God’s Spirit asked them to write it and leave it for later times (Isaiah 29:11; Daniel 8:17, 26; 12:4, 9).

Along with other people of God (Colossians 1:26-27), the Apostle Paul was given the understanding for some of these mysteries, to reveal them to Christian Believers (Romans 11:25; 16:25; 1 Corinthians 2:7; 15:51; Ephesians 3:3-4, 9; 5:32; 6:19; Colossians 4:3); and to the Apostle John, the mystery of the end-times was revealed, as he recorded it in the book of Revelation in the Bible. Hence, the Bible can never be taken or seen as another book written by people of the world; it is unique, not just a collection of stories, incidents, and teachings written on the principle of ‘do good and be good’ to become acceptable to God.

The Gospel of John begins with these words: “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God” (John 1:1); and then goes on to say, “And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth” (John 1:14). These two verses make it abundantly clear to us why the Bible is called The Living Word; because in the form of The Bible, we have the Lord Jesus, God Himself, in our hands in a printed or written form.

This brings up a very important consideration before us, something that most people neither ponder over, nor pay heed to, i.e., any alteration, mishandling, misuse, misinterpretation of the Bible is tantamount to doing it to the Lord Jesus, and thereby maltreating and dishonoring God Himself. No wonder then that God has very strictly cautioned in His Word not to add anything to it, nor take anything away from it (Deuteronomy 4:2; Proverbs 30:6; Revelation 22:18-19); doing so has severe consequences. Paul too emphasizes this through his own example (2 Corinthians 2:17; 4:2), and exhorts others to be careful to rightly ‘divide’, i.e., interpret and expound God’s Word (2 Timothy 2:15).

This is where the role of Christian Believers as stewards of God’s Word the Bible comes in - to ensure that it is not tampered with, it is not misused, misinterpreted, mishandled, and is always presented in its actual form to others. We will see more on this in the next article.
