प्रत्येक मसीही विश्वासी को परमेश्वर द्वारा, उसके उद्धार पाने के पल से ही, परमेश्वर पवित्र आत्मा प्रदान किया गया है, मसीही जीवन जीने और परमेश्वर द्वारा उसे निर्धारित की गई सेवकाई का निर्वाह करने के लिए। पवित्र आत्मा उस में उसका सहायक, साथी, शिक्षक, और मार्गदर्शक बन कर आजीवन निवास करता है। परमेश्वर पवित्र आत्मा के भण्डारी होने के नाते, विश्वासियों को परमेश्वर के वचन में से उसकी सहायता और सेवाओं को योग्य रीति से उपयोग करना सीखना चाहिए। पवित्र आत्मा द्वारा विश्वासियों को सिखाई जाने वाली बातों में से एक है परमेश्वर का वचन, बाइबल (यूहन्ना 14:26)। किन्तु बहुत ही कम विश्वासी उस से सीखते हैं; उस की बजाए, वे मनुष्यों और पुस्तकों से सीखने लगते हैं। ऐसा इसलिए होता है क्योंकि पवित्र आत्मा से सीखने के लिए उस के प्रति एक अनुशासन की, समर्पण और प्रतिबद्धता की आवश्यकता होती है। मनुष्यों और उनकी रचनाओं से सीखने में कुछ खतरे होते हैं, क्योंकि, मनुष्य चाहे कितना भी भक्त और परमेश्वर के प्रति समर्पित जन क्यों न हो, लेकिन फिर भी वह गलती करने वाला और असिद्ध रहता है। और उसकी असिद्धता की, गलतियों की बातें उसके जीवन और कार्यों में कभी-कभी प्रकट होती ही रहती हैं। इसलिए गलती करने वाले और असिद्ध मनुष्यों और उनके द्वारा लिखी गई पुस्तकों पर निर्भर करने से विश्वासी गलतियों में पड़ने और शैतान द्वारा बहकाए जाने के खतरे में बना रहता है।

हाल के कुछ लेखों में हम विश्वासियों द्वारा परमेश्वर का वचन पवित्र आत्मा की बजाए मनुष्यों से सीखने के बारे में विचार कर रहे हैं। कारणों में से एक है, कुछ विश्वासियों का कुछ अगुवों और प्रचारकों को बहुत आदर-समान का स्तर देकर, उन पर अँध-विश्वास करना। इसलिये उन लोगों में, अपने मन-पसन्द अगुवों और प्रचारकों की कही गई हर बात को, बिना पहले बाइबल से जाँचे-परखे, यूँ ही स्वीकार कर लेने, और उसका पालन करने लगने की दृढ़ और हठीली प्रवृत्ति रहती है। उनका यह ढिठाई से मनुष्यों का अनुसरण का रवैया, उन्हें अपरिपक्व और शारीरिक मसीही बना देता है (1 कुरिन्थियों 3:3-4)। ऐसे विश्वासी ‘दूध’ के सिवाए, और कुछ भी नहीं पचा पाते हैं; अर्थात, मसीहीयत के आधारभूत सिद्धान्तों से परे और कुछ भी स्वीकार करने और सीखने नहीं पाते हैं। पिछले लेख में हम इस स्थान पर आकर रुके थे कि उनके इस ढीठ रवैये के कारण और कठोर हो कर सुधरने की कोई इच्छा नहीं रखने के कारण, पवित्र आत्मा को पीछे हटना पड़ता है, और उसे उन्हें उन के चुने हुए साधनों पर छोड़ देना पड़ता है। किन्तु क्योंकि परमेश्वर प्रेम और धैर्य रखने वाला परमेश्वर है, वह उन्हें त्याग नहीं देता है, वरन उन्हें केवल ‘दूध’ जिसे वे पचा सकते हैं देता रहता है। किन्तु मसीही विश्वास तथा परमेश्वर के वचन में उनकी शिक्षा इस से आगे नहीं बढ़ने पाती है। आज हम यहाँ से आगे बढ़ेंगे।

यह ‘दूध’, आधारभूत बातें, अर्थात् वे आरंभिक सिद्धान्त, जिन्हें नए विश्वासियों को जानना और सीखना चाहिए, हमें इब्रानियों 6:1-2 में दिए गए हैं, “इसलिये आओ मसीह की शिक्षा की आरम्भ की बातों को छोड़ कर, हम सिद्धता की ओर आगे बढ़ते जाएं, और मरे हुए कामों से मन फिराने, और परमेश्वर पर विश्वास करने, और बपतिस्मों और हाथ रखने, और मरे हुओं के जी उठने, और अन्‍तिम न्याय की शिक्षा रूपी नेव, फिर से न डालें।” ये संख्या में छः हैं, और पश्चाताप से लेकर अन्तिम न्याय तक का सारा क्रम इन में पाया जाता है। इब्रानियों 5:12 से प्रतीत होता है कि उस समय में मसीही विश्वास की इन आरंभ की बातों का सिखाया जाना निर्धारित कार्य होता था। लेकिन दुःख की बात है कि आज अधिकांश मसीही, चाहे उन्हें नया जन्म पाए हुए कई वर्ष ही क्यों न हो गए हों, इन के बारे शायद ही कुछ जानते हैं। इसलिए, इन छः बातों को प्रत्येक मसीही को सिखाया जाना निर्धारित पाठ्यक्रम होना चाहिए।

इब्रानियों 5:11-12 हमारे सामने कुछ महत्वपूर्ण बातें लाता है:

• पहली, क्योंकि इब्रानियों की पत्री के पाठक उन्हें सिखाई गई इन आरंभ की बातों के बारे में भूल गए थे, इसलिए उन का अपने मसीही जीवनों में बढ़ना और परिपक्व होना रुक गया था। यदि वे उन सिद्धांतों का पालन करते रहते, तो यह आशा की जाती थी कि वे ‘शिक्षक’ हो जाते और ‘ठोस भोजन’, या अन्न खाने और पचाने वाले परिपक्व जन बन जाते।

• दूसरी, मसीही जीवन में बढ़ोतरी और परिपक्वता विश्वास में आने से ले कर अभी तक के बीते समय के आधार पर नहीं है, बल्कि विश्वासियों के रवैये और व्यवहार के आधार पर है। प्रेरित पौलुस अपने युवा शिष्य तीमुथियुस को इफिसुस की कलीसिया में गलतियों को सुधारने के लिए अकेला छोड़ सका (1 तीमुथियुस 1:3-4)। जिन मसीही विश्वासियों के जीवन में डाह, झगड़े, और विभाजन है, वे बाइबल के मानकों के अनुसार अभी भी अपरिपक्व और शारीरिक विश्वासी हैं (1 कुरिन्थियों 3:3)। इस से कोई अन्तर नहीं पड़ता है कि वे विश्वास में चाहे कितने भी लंबे समय से क्यों न हों, विश्वासियों में उनका स्तर चाहे कुछ भी हो, और परमेश्वर के वचन के बारे में वे चाहे कितना भी ज्ञान क्यों न रखते हों। इसलिए वे केवल इन छः आरंभिक सिद्धांतों को ही सीखने, स्वीकार करने, और समझने भर की क्षमता रखते हैं।

• तीसरा, मसीही विश्वासियों के लिए ‘ठोस भोजन’ या अन्न, जैसा कि यहाँ इब्रानियों 5:12 में लिखा है, और प्रेरित पौलुस ने 1 कुरिन्थियों 3:2 में कहा है, परमेश्वर के वचन की वो शिक्षाएँ और दर्शन हैं जो इब्रानियों 6:1-2 में कही गई इन छः बातों से अधिक गूढ़ और गंभीर हैं, उदाहरण के लिए मसीह की सेवकाई और मलिकिसिदक (इब्रानियों 5:10)।

• चौथा, इन आरंभिक बातों को भूल जाना, इनके प्रति लापरवाह होना, इनकी अनदेखी करना, मसीही विश्वासी को अपरिपक्व बना देता है, उसे परमेश्वर के वचन की गूढ़ बातों को ग्रहण करने और समझने के अयोग्य कर देता है, और उसे ठोस भोजन नहीं बल्कि लौट कर फिर से केवल ‘दूध’ लेने वाला बना देता है। क्योंकि तब वह ऊँचा सुनने लगता है और उसे समझा पाना कठिन हो जाता है (इब्रानियों  5:11)।

हम अगले लेख में यहाँ से और आगे चलेंगे तथा देखेंगे। 

यदि आपने प्रभु की शिष्यता को अभी तक स्वीकार नहीं किया है, तो अपने अनन्त जीवन और स्वर्गीय आशीषों को सुनिश्चित करने के लिए अभी प्रभु यीशु के पक्ष में अपना निर्णय कर लीजिए। जहाँ प्रभु की आज्ञाकारिता है, उसके वचन की बातों का आदर और पालन है, वहाँ प्रभु की आशीष और सुरक्षा भी है। स्वेच्छा से अपने पापों के लिये पश्चाताप करके, प्रभु यीशु से अपने पापों के लिए क्षमा माँगकर, स्वेच्छा से तथा सच्चे मन से अपने आप को उसकी अधीनता में समर्पित कर दीजिए - उद्धार और स्वर्गीय जीवन का यही एकमात्र मार्ग है। आपको स्वेच्छा और सच्चे मन से प्रभु यीशु मसीह से केवल एक छोटी प्रार्थना करनी है, और साथ ही अपना जीवन उसे पूर्णतः समर्पित करना है। आप यह प्रार्थना और समर्पण कुछ इस प्रकार से भी कर सकते हैं, “प्रभु यीशु, मैं अपने पापों के लिए पश्चातापी हूँ, उनके लिए आप से क्षमा माँगता हूँ। मैं आपका धन्यवाद करता हूँ कि आपने मेरे पापों की क्षमा और समाधान के लिए उन पापों को अपने ऊपर लिया, उनके कारण मेरे स्थान पर क्रूस की मृत्यु सही, गाड़े गए, और मेरे उद्धार के लिए आप तीसरे दिन जी भी उठे, और आज जीवित प्रभु परमेश्वर हैं। कृपया मुझे और मेरे पापों को क्षमा करें, मुझे अपनी शरण में लें, और मुझे अपना शिष्य बना लें। मैं अपना जीवन आप के हाथों में समर्पित करता हूँ।” सच्चे और समर्पित मन से की गई आपकी एक प्रार्थना आपके वर्तमान तथा भविष्य को, इस लोक के और परलोक के जीवन को, अनन्तकाल के लिए स्वर्गीय एवं आशीषित बना देगी।

Learning From the Holy Spirit – 8

 

The Holy Spirit of God, has been given to every Christian Believer by God at the moment of his salvation, to always reside in him as his Helper, Companion, Teacher, and Guide. He has been given to help the Believer in living his Christian life and fulfilling his God assigned ministry responsibilities. As stewards of the Holy Spirit, the Believers have to learn from God’s Word to utilize His help and services worthily. One of the things the Holy Spirit teaches to the Believers is God’s Word, the Bible (John 14:26). But not many Believers learn from Him; instead, they turn to learning from men and books. This is because learning from the Holy Spirit requires discipline, a commitment, and obedience to Him. Learning from man and his works has its dangers, since no man, no matter how godly and committed to God he may be, but he is still fallible and imperfect. And this fallibility, this imperfection keeps showing up every now and then in his life and works. Therefore, relying upon fallible, imperfect men and the books written by them leaves the Believers open to falling into errors and being misled by Satan.

In the recent articles, we have been considering about the Believers learning God’s Word not from the Holy Spirit, but from men. One of the reasons is some Believers hold some leaders and preachers in very high esteem, and have blind faith in them for everything. Therefore, they have an obstinate tendency to blindly accept and follow whatever their esteemed leaders and preachers say and teach. They stubbornly and persistently ignore the Biblical command to first evaluate and verify it from the Bible. This persistent attitude of following men, makes those Believers immature and carnal Christians (1 Corinthians 3:3-4). Such Believers are incapable of digesting anything but ‘milk’, i.e., incapable of accepting and learning anything beyond the basic elementary principles of Christianity. In the last article we had stopped at the point that because of this stubborn attitude, and being resistant to corrections, the Holy Spirit has to step back in the lives of such Believers, and leave them to their own chosen devices. God being a God of love, being long-suffering, He does not abandon them, but keeps on feeding them with the ‘milk’ that they can take and digest. But their learning in Christian faith and Word of God does not go beyond this. Today we will carry on about this from this point onwards.

This ‘milk’, the basics, i.e., the elementary principles that the beginners need to know and learn, are given to us in Hebrews 6:1-2, “Therefore, leaving the discussion of the elementary principles of Christ, let us go on to perfection, not laying again the foundation of repentance from dead works and of faith toward God, of the doctrine of baptisms, of laying on of hands, of resurrection of the dead, and of eternal judgment.” They are six in number, and cover the whole spectrum from repentance up to eternal judgement. In other words, all the aspects of Christian life are covered in these six topics. From Hebrews 5:12, it seems that teaching these elementary principles was then the standard practice. But sadly speaking, today most Christians, despite being Born-Again Believers for many years, know hardly anything significant about them. Hence these six principles ought to be the standard teaching and learning curriculum for all Christians.

Hebrews 5:11-12 brings some important points before us:

• Firstly, Because the recipients of the letter to Hebrews had forgotten what they had been taught about these elementary principles, therefore they had stopped growing and maturing in their Christian lives. Had they continued to follow these principles, the expectation was that they would have become ‘teachers’ and matured to be those who would take and digest ‘solid food.’

• Secondly, Christian growth and maturity is not according to the time one has been in the faith, but by attitudes and behaviour of the Believers. The Apostle Paul could leave Timothy his young pupil alone, to correct the errors in the Church at Ephesus (1 Timothy 1:3-4). The Christian Believers who have envy, strife, and divisions in their lives, by Biblical standards, they are still immature and carnal Christians (1 Corinthians 3:3). Irrespective of however long they might have been in the faith, no matter what their status may be amongst the Believers, and howsoever knowledgeable they may be about God’s Word. Therefore, they are only capable of learning, accepting, and understanding things related to these six elementary principles.

• Thirdly, the ‘solid food’ for the Christian Believers, as written here in Hebrew 5:12, and as the Apostle Paul has said in 1 Corinthians 3:2, are teachings and expositions of God’s Word that are deeper and more profound than what is covered in these six elementary principles that  are stated in Hebrews 6:1-2; e.g., things about Christ’s ministry and Melchizedek (Hebrews 5:10).

• Fourthly, forgetting, or overlooking, or ignoring these basic elementary principles, leads to loss of maturity in the Christian Believer, rendering him incapable of receiving and understanding the deeper things of God’s Word, and reverting him to requiring being fed only milk, not solid food. Since then they become dull of hearing, and it becomes something hard to explain to them (Hebrews 5:11).

We will carry on further about this in the next article.

Where there is obedience to the Lord, where there is respect and obedience to His Word, there is also the blessing and protection of the Lord. Repenting of your sins, and asking the Lord Jesus for forgiveness of your sins, voluntarily and sincerely, surrendering yourself to Him - is the only way to salvation and heavenly life. You only have to say a short but sincere prayer to the Lord Jesus Christ willingly and with a penitent heart, and at the same time completely commit and submit your life to Him. You can also make this prayer and submission in words something like, “Lord Jesus, I am sorry for my sins and repent of them. I thank you for taking my sins upon yourself, paying for them through your life.  Because of them you died on the cross in my place, were buried, and you rose again from the grave on the third day for my salvation, and today you are the living Lord God and have freely provided to me the forgiveness, and redemption from my sins, through faith in you. Please forgive my sins, take me under your care, and make me your disciple. I submit my life into your hands." Your one prayer from a sincere and committed heart will make your present and future life, in this world and in the hereafter, heavenly and blessed for eternity.

पिछले लेख में हमने 1 कुरिन्थियों 11:18-19 से प्रभु भोज में भाग लेने से संबंधित गलतियों के पहले समूह को देखा था। कलीसिया में समस्याओं की जड़ गुट-बाज़ी और विभाजन थे, जो इसलिए उत्पन्न हो गए थे क्योंकि लोग प्रभु यीशु की ओर देखने की बजाए, अपने मन-पसंद शिक्षकों और अगुवों की ओर देखने लग गए थे। उनमें से जो व्यक्तिगत महत्वाकांक्षाएँ रखते थे और ओहदा चाहते थे, उन्होंने विश्वासियों के मध्य इस विनाशकारी प्रवृत्ति को बढ़ावा दिया। कुल मिलाकर परिणाम यह हुआ कि मसीही विश्वासियों में आत्मिक अपरिपक्वता, बालकों के समान व्यवहार, शारीरिक प्रवृत्तियाँ और बर्ताव, डाह और झगड़े उत्पन्न हो गए, जिन से कलीसिया में विभाजन आ गए।

इसके बाद पौलुस 1 कुरिन्थियों 11:20-22 में प्रभु भोज से संबंधित गलतियों के दूसरे समूह को दिखाता है जो उनमें घुस आया था। हम इन पदों से उन गलतियाँ को देख सकते हैं जो कि कलीसिया में आ गई थीं:

* प्रभु द्वारा स्थापना के समय उस पहले प्रभु भोज के समय, शिष्यों को एक रोटी और एक प्याले में से भाग लेना था, इसलिए प्रत्येक ने रोटी का छोटा टुकड़ा, और प्याले में से एक घूंट भर ही लिया होगा। इस प्रकार, रोटी और प्याले में संकेतात्मक रीति से भाग लेने के स्थान पर, यहाँ उन विश्वासियों ने प्रभु भोज को पूरा भोजन बना लिया था। हम पौलुस द्वारा पद 20 के अंत और पद 21 के मध्य में प्रयोग किए गए शब्दों से इसके बारे में  उसके द्वारा दिए गए ताने, उसके व्यंग्य को देख सकते हैं “...यह प्रभु भोज खाने के लिये नहीं” “...अपना भोज खा लेता है...” उन्होंने प्रभु भोज को अपने व्यक्तिगत भोज में बदल दिया था। और अब वे प्रभु की आज्ञाकारिता में, उसे आदर देने के लिए नहीं, किन्तु अपनी इच्छा के अनुसार करने के लिए एकत्रित हो रहे थे, किसी की भी परवाह किए बिना।

* वे एक साथ नहीं, अलग-अलग खा रहे थे। प्रभु ने सभी शिष्यों को एक साथ एक ही रोटी और एक ही प्याले में से भाग लेने के लिए कहा था। किन्तु यहाँ तो विश्वासी पूरा भोजन करने लग गए थे, व्यक्तिगत रीति से “एक दूसरे से पहिले”। उनके मध्य एक ही प्रभु पर किए गए एक ही विश्वास की एकता का चिह्न भंग हो गया था। उसके स्थान पर अपने आप को एक-दूसरे से बढ़कर दिखाने की भावना आ गई थी, जिससे उनके मध्य केवल विभाजन और गुट ही बन सकते थे।

* उन्होंने प्याले के दाख रस को मदिरा, दाख रस पर खमीर की क्रिया से प्राप्त होने वाली वस्तु, से बदल लिया था। और उस मदिरा में से भी, जिसे कदापि वहाँ होना ही नहीं चाहिए था, एक घूंट लेने के स्थान पर, उसे इतना पी रहे थे कि मतवाले हो जाते थे - कलीसिया में। और वे यह उस समय कर रहे थे जब वे कहने को, उनके लिए दिए गए प्रभु के बलिदान को याद करने के लिए एकत्रित होते थे, अर्थात उसकी तोड़ी गई देह और बहाए गए लहू को, जिससे कि उन्हें उद्धार मिल सका, आदर देने के लिए।

* न केवल वे प्रभु द्वारा दी गई प्रभु भोज की विधि का उल्लंघन कर रहे थे, वरन उनमें अपने साथी सह-विश्वासियों के प्रति कोई परवाह भी नहीं थी। वे प्रभु भोज के नाम में भोजन खाने को “जिन के पास नहीं है उन्हें लज्जित” (पद 22) करने के लिए प्रयोग कर रहे थे। बजाए साथी विश्वासियों के प्रति विश्वासी भाईचारे और प्रेम को दिखाने के, उन्हें जिनके पास कोई भोजन नहीं था अपने साथ भोजन में भाग लेने के लिए आमंत्रित करने की बजाए, वे उनका ठट्टा कर रहे थे, उन्हें भूखे छोड़ दे रहे थे (पद 21), जबकि स्वयं प्रभु भोज के नाम में अपना भोजन उनके सामने खा रहे थे। उनके मध्य की इस गुट-बाज़ी ने उन्हें गहराई से विभाजित कर दिया था, और विभाजन की एक रेखा थी उनके परस्पर आर्थिक और सामाजिक स्तर - जिनके अनुसार वे पृथक हो गए थे, बजाए पापों से बचाए गए और उद्धार पाए हुए परमेश्वर की संतानों के समान एक-जुट रहने के।

अगले लेख में हम इन गलतियों से सम्बन्धित बाइबल के कुछ तथ्यों को देखेंगे, और उस आधार पर इन्हें समझेंगे।

यदि आपने प्रभु की शिष्यता को अभी तक स्वीकार नहीं किया है, तो अपने अनन्त जीवन और स्वर्गीय आशीषों को सुनिश्चित करने के लिए अभी प्रभु यीशु के पक्ष में अपना निर्णय कर लीजिए। जहाँ प्रभु की आज्ञाकारिता है, उसके वचन की बातों का आदर और पालन है, वहाँ प्रभु की आशीष और सुरक्षा भी है। प्रभु यीशु से अपने पापों के लिए क्षमा माँगकर, स्वेच्छा से तथा सच्चे मन से अपने आप को उसकी अधीनता में समर्पित कर दीजिए - उद्धार और स्वर्गीय जीवन का यही एकमात्र मार्ग है। आपको स्वेच्छा और सच्चे मन से प्रभु यीशु मसीह से केवल एक छोटी प्रार्थना करनी है, और साथ ही अपना जीवन उसे पूर्णतः समर्पित करना है। आप यह प्रार्थना और समर्पण कुछ इस प्रकार से भी कर सकते हैं, “प्रभु यीशु मैं आपका धन्यवाद करता हूँ कि आपने मेरे पापों की क्षमा और समाधान के लिए उन पापों को अपने ऊपर लिया, उनके कारण मेरे स्थान पर क्रूस की मृत्यु सही, गाड़े गए, और मेरे उद्धार के लिए आप तीसरे दिन जी भी उठे, और आज जीवित प्रभु परमेश्वर हैं। कृपया मेरे पापों को क्षमा करें, मुझे अपनी शरण में लें, और मुझे अपना शिष्य बना लें। मैं अपना जीवन आप के हाथों में समर्पित करता हूँ।” सच्चे और समर्पित मन से की गई आपकी एक प्रार्थना आपके वर्तमान तथा भविष्य को, इस लोक के और परलोक के जीवन को, अनन्तकाल के लिए स्वर्गीय एवं आशीषित बना देगी।

       In the previous article we had seen the first set of errors related to partaking in the Holy Communion from 1 Corinthians 11:18-19. The root problem of the Church was factionalism and divisions that had come in because of people looking up to their favorite teachers and elders of the Church instead of the Lord Jesus. Those amongst them desirous of personal approval and recognition from men, encouraged and developed this disastrous tendency amongst the Believers. The net result of it all was spiritual immaturity, childish behavior, being carnal, having strife and contentions amongst the Believers, leading to divisions in the Church.

       Paul then, in 1 Corinthians 11:20-22, points out the second set of errors that had crept in among them related to the Lord’s Table. We can see from these verses that the following errors had crept into the Church:

* At the time of the establishment of the Holy Communion, during the communion participation, the disciples had to share the one bread and one cup, therefore, everyone would have taken a small part of the bread and a sip from the cup. But here, instead of partaking of the Bread and Cup symbolically, these Believers had started to treat it as a full meal. We can see the sarcasm that Paul uses here at the end of verse 20 and beginning of verse 21 - “...it is not to eat the Lord's Supper. For in eating, each one takes his own supper...” They had changed “The Lord’s Supper” into their “own supper”; and they were now gathering not with the intention of honoring the Lord by being obedient to Him, but for each one to do what pleased them, without caring at all for the others.

* They were eating it separately, not together. The Lord had asked all the disciples to together share the same bread and cup, at the same time. But here, the Believers had started to eat a meal, individually, “ahead of others.” The indicator of unity, of their being together as one unit in faith in the Lord had been broken; it had been replaced by a show of ‘one-upmanship’, which could only serve to divide and segregate them further.

* They had replaced the contents of the cup with wine, the fermented product from grape-juice. And instead of taking a sip from that wine, which should not have been there, in the first place, they were drinking it to the extent of getting drunk - in the Church. Doing this at the time they had supposedly gathered to honor the Lord by remembering His sacrifice for them, i.e., remember His body broken for them and His blood shed for them, so that they could be delivered from their sins.

* Not only were they flouting the Lord’s instituted manner of the Holy Communion, but also had no concern for their fellow Believers, their brethren in the Lord. They were using their participation in the Holy Communion to “shame those who have nothing” (verse 22). Instead of exhibiting brotherly love and concern for fellow Believers, and inviting those who did not have any food to share and join with them, they were mocking them, letting them go hungry (verse 21), while they ate their food in the name of the Holy Communion of the Lord. The factionalism in them had deeply divided them, and one of the lines of divisions was the line between the rich and the poor - they were segregating themselves according to their socio-economic status, instead of showing unity as the saved children of God.

In the next article we will see some Biblical facts related to the above, to understand these errors.

I believe that you have fully borne the punishment of my sins by your sacrifice on the cross, and have paid the full price of those sins for all eternity. Please forgive my sins, change my heart and mind towards you, and make me your disciple, take me with you." God longs for your company and wants to see you blessed, but to make this possible, is your personal decision. Will you not say this prayer now, while you have the time and opportunity to do so - the decision is yours.

    फिर, इब्रानियों 5:13-14 में वह इस बात को और अच्छे से समझाता है, व्यक्ति द्वारा लिए जाने वाले आत्मिक भोजन से सम्बन्धित कुछ बातों को कहने के द्वारा। पद 13 में वह कहता है कि दूध पीने वाले बच्चों को तो धर्म के वचन की पहचान नहीं होती है, अर्थात, वे जो केवल आत्मिक दूध ही पीने वाले हैं, वे लोग वह हैं जो वचन में अक्षम, अनुभवहीन, उस से अनजान होते हैं। इसलिए, परमेश्वर के वचन की गहरी बातों से अनजान होना, उन्हें ग्रहण न कर पाना, उन्हें समझ न पाना, मसीही जीवन में शिशु होने के, आत्मिक अपरिपक्वता तथा बढ़ोतरी के अभाव के चिह्न हैं। फिर वह पद 14 में कहता है कि ठोस भोजन या अन्न, सयानों के लिए है। दूसरे शब्दों में, परमेश्वर के वचन की गहरी बातों को उन्हें देने का प्रयास करना जो उन्हें ग्रहण कर पाने और पचाने योग्य नहीं हैं, व्यर्थ है क्योंकि वे बातें उनके लिए हैं ही नहीं। और फिर पद 14 के दूसरे भाग में इस पत्री का लेखक उस आत्मिक परिपक्वता – सयाने होने को परिभाषित करता है, जिस के बारे में वह पवित्र आत्मा की अगुवाई में बात कर रहा है, अर्थात वे “...जिन के ज्ञानेन्‍द्रिय अभ्यास करते करते, भले बुरे में भेद करने के लिये पक्के हो गए हैं।” दूसरे शब्दों में, आत्मिक परिपक्वता प्राप्त करने के लिए व्यक्ति की ज्ञानेन्द्रियों का नियमित और पर्याप्त रीति से भली और बुरी बातों की पहचान करने, उन बातों का आँकलन करने, का अभ्यास करते रहना अनिवार्य है। यह कुछ उसके समान है जो पौलुस रोमियों 12:1-2 में परमेश्वर की इच्छा जानने के बारे में कहता है – सम्पूर्ण समर्पण और परमेश्वर की आज्ञाकारिता में चलते रहने के अनुभवों के द्वारा। अनुभव जितने अधिक होंगे, सँख्या तथा विभिन्नता दोनों में, परमेश्वर की इच्छा जान पाने की क्षमता उतनी ही अधिक बेहतर होगी। इसलिए, आत्मिक परिपक्वता प्राप्त करने के लिए, मसीही विश्वासी को भली और बुरी, दोनों ही प्रकार की परिस्थितियों, उनमें परखे जाने और जयवन्त होने से होकर निकलना पड़ेगा।

    किसी को भी इस से डरने की आवश्यकता नहीं है, क्योंकि मसीही विश्वासियों में न केवल परमेश्वर पवित्र आत्मा निवास करता है, उनकी सहायता एवं मार्गदर्शन करके पार ले जाने के लिए, बल्कि परमेश्वर की प्रतिज्ञा भी है कि वह अपने बच्चों को उनकी क्षमता से अधिक किसी भी परीक्षा में नहीं पड़ने देगा, वरन उस स्थिति में भी उसके साथ निकासी का मार्ग भी देगा (1 कुरिन्थियों 10:13)। इसलिए, एक प्रकार से इन भली-बुरी परिस्थितियों और अनुभवों से होकर निकलना उन्हें और अधिक फलवन्त करने के लिए की जाने वाली छँटाई (यूहन्ना 15:2) के समान है, या सुनार द्वारा आग से ताए जाने के समान जिसके द्वारा वह सोने या चाँदी में से अशुद्धताओं को जलाता और बाहर निकालता है, और उसे परिशुद्ध करता है (जकरयाह 13:9; मलाकी 3:3; 1 पतरस 1:7)। तात्पर्य यह है कि आत्मिक परिपक्वता और परमेश्वर के वचन की गूढ़ बातों को सीखने एवं समझने की क्षमता प्राप्त करने के लिए, व्यक्ति को निरन्तर विभिन्न प्रकार की परिस्थितियों का सामना करने के अभ्यास से होकर निकलते रहना पड़ता है। और इसके लिए एक सक्रिय मसीही जीवन अनिवार्य है, बजाए इसके कि केवल “इतवार के मसीही” बने रहें, जो केवल कुछ धार्मिक रीतियों और परम्पराओं के पालन करते रहने में ही रुचि रखते हैं, किन्तु इस से उनके आत्मिक जीवनों में कभी भी कोई भी आत्मिक बढ़ोतरी या परिपक्वता नहीं आती है।

    लगता है कि यह नहीं करने के कारण, अपने शिक्षक एवं सहायक, पवित्र आत्मा की आज्ञाकारिता एवं मार्गदर्शन में जीवन व्यतीत न करने के कारण, ये इब्रानी विश्वासी अपने आत्मिक जीवन में गिर कर अपरिपक्वता की इस दशा में आ गए थे कि उन्हें फिर से इब्रानियों 6:1-2 में दी गई आरंभिक बातों को सिखाने की आवश्यकता पड़ गई थी। अगले लेख से हम एक-एक कर के इन बातों को देखना आरम्भ करेंगे।  

    यदि आपने प्रभु की शिष्यता को अभी तक स्वीकार नहीं किया है, तो अपने अनन्त जीवन और स्वर्गीय आशीषों को सुनिश्चित करने के लिए अभी प्रभु यीशु के पक्ष में अपना निर्णय कर लीजिए। जहाँ प्रभु की आज्ञाकारिता है, उसके वचन की बातों का आदर और पालन है, वहाँ प्रभु की आशीष और सुरक्षा भी है। प्रभु यीशु से अपने पापों के लिए क्षमा माँगकर, स्वेच्छा से तथा सच्चे मन से अपने आप को उसकी अधीनता में समर्पित कर दीजिए - उद्धार और स्वर्गीय जीवन का यही एकमात्र मार्ग है। आपको स्वेच्छा और सच्चे मन से प्रभु यीशु मसीह से केवल एक छोटी प्रार्थना करनी है, और साथ ही अपना जीवन उसे पूर्णतः समर्पित करना है। आप यह प्रार्थना और समर्पण कुछ इस प्रकार से भी कर सकते हैं, “प्रभु यीशु, मैं अपने पापों के लिए पश्चातापी हूँ, उनके लिए आप से क्षमा माँगता हूँ। मैं आपका धन्यवाद करता हूँ कि आपने मेरे पापों की क्षमा और समाधान के लिए उन पापों को अपने ऊपर लिया, उनके कारण मेरे स्थान पर क्रूस की मृत्यु सही, गाड़े गए, और मेरे उद्धार के लिए आप तीसरे दिन जी भी उठे, और आज जीवित प्रभु परमेश्वर हैं। कृपया मुझे और मेरे पापों को क्षमा करें, मुझे अपनी शरण में लें, और मुझे अपना शिष्य बना लें। मैं अपना जीवन आप के हाथों में समर्पित करता हूँ।” सच्चे और समर्पित मन से की गई आपकी एक प्रार्थना आपके वर्तमान तथा भविष्य को, इस लोक के और परलोक के जीवन को, अनन्तकाल के लिए स्वर्गीय एवं आशीषित बना देगी।

The Elementary Principles – 3

Introduction - 3

    

    For Christian growth and maturity, the Christian Believers need to feed on the whole of God’s Word prayerfully, regularly, and systematically, i.e., study and learn it, and then practise it or live by it. As was mentioned in the last article, to help them in doing this, God has provided them His Holy Spirit since the moment of their being Born-Again or saved. They should not only endeavour to apply whatever they learn with the help of the Holy Spirit in their lives, but also teach others whatever they have been taught. Doing so is a part of their Christian ministry, entrusted to them in the Great Commission commanded by the Lord Jesus to His disciples. In the last article we had seen that quite likely the Hebrew Believers, to whom the New Testament letter to the Hebrews had been written, had failed to fulfil these responsibilities. Consequently, they were now so fallen back in their spiritual lives and maturity, that it had become impossible to teach them the deeper things of God’s Word. They had reverted to a childlike stage, where it had become necessary to teach the elementary principles of God’s Word once again to them, as the author of this letter says in Hebrews 5:12 (b). Today we will consider this aspect of learning God’s Word and its implications in a Believer’s life.

    In 1 Peter 2:2, through the Holy Spirit, the Apostle Peter writes to his readers, “as newborn babes, desire the pure milk of the word, that you may grow thereby.” This analogy used by Peter, is a common-sense thing that we see around us every day – infants and babies cannot partake of anything else, other than milk; they are inherently incapable of digesting anything else, and even if something other than milk is given to them it does not help in their growth and development, rather, it may harm them. Similarly, the author of Hebrews is writing in Hebrews 5:12 (b), that these Believers have now once again become spiritual infants and babies, who cannot partake and digest anything other than “milk,” i.e., the initial basic food of the new-borns. The author by saying “…you have come to need…” shows them their actual spiritual condition; that the basic teachings of God’s Word had once again become a necessity for them. Not only had they become incapable of partaking and digesting anything solid which the author was wanting to share with them, but feeding them anything other than the spiritual milk, i.e., the basics, would have been futile; since they would neither be able to digest it, not grow by it. Hence, he reminds them of the six elementary principles mentioned in Hebrews 6:1-2, in which they ought to be well versed, so that they may once again become capable of receiving the deeper teachings of God’s Word that God had kept for them.

    Then in Hebrews 5:13-14 he explains it further by emphasizing certain points about the kind of spiritual food a person is partaking. In verse 13 he says that babies, i.e., those unskilled, meaning inexperienced or ignorant, in the Word of God, they partake only milk. So being incapable of comprehending the deeper truths of God’s Word is a sign of infancy in Christian life; implying spiritual immaturity and lack of growth in their Christian lives. Then, in verse 14 he says that solid food is meant for those who are mature. In other words, trying to feed the deeper things of God’s Word to those incapable of taking and digesting them, is a waste since those things do not belong to them. And then, in the second half of verse 14 the author of this letter defines the spiritual maturity – those who are of full age, or those who are mature are the ones, that he is talking about under the guidance of the Holy Spirit, i.e., they “…who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.” In other words, to attain spiritual maturity one’s senses have to be regularly and amply exercised, to discern i.e., evaluate and judge the good as well as the bad things. This is something like what Paul said in Romans 12:1-2 about learning to discern God’s will – by full submission to God and through the experiences of living in obedience to Him; the more the experiences in both variety and number, the better the ability to learn and know God’s will. So, to attain spiritual maturity, the Christian Believer will need to go through and be tested, in both kinds of circumstances – good as well as bad or evil, and come out victorious in them.

    No one need be afraid of this, since not only do Christian Believers have God’s Holy Spirit residing in them to help and guide them through, but God has also promised that His children will never be tried beyond their capabilities, and even then, a way out will also be provided to them (1 Corinthians 10:13). So, in a sense going though the various circumstances, good or bad, is like the pruning process to make a person more fruitful (John 15:2), or the refining through fire that a goldsmith or silversmith does to the metal to burn and remove its dross, and purify it (Zechariah 13:9; Malachi 3:3; 1 Peter 1:7). The implication is that to attain spiritual maturity and discernment, to be able to learn and understand the deeper things of God’s Word, one has to continually be exercised through various kinds of circumstances, and therefore have to live an active Christian life, instead of merely being the “Sunday Christians” interested only in fulfilling certain religious formalities and rituals, which will never result in any growth and maturity in spiritual lives.

    Apparently, because of not doing this, not living in obedience to and under the guidance of their teacher and helper, the Holy Spirit of God, these Hebrew Believers, from a mature state, had fallen into this state of immaturity, and had come to require being taught the elementary principles all over again. In the next article, we will start on the elementary principles given in Hebrews 6:1-2, one by one.

    If you have not yet accepted the discipleship of the Lord, make your decision in favor of the Lord Jesus now to ensure your eternal life and heavenly blessings. Where there is obedience to the Lord, where there is respect and obedience to His Word, there is also the blessing and protection of the Lord. Repenting of your sins, and asking the Lord Jesus for forgiveness of your sins, voluntarily and sincerely, surrendering yourself to Him - is the only way to salvation and heavenly life. You only have to say a short but sincere prayer to the Lord Jesus Christ willingly and with a penitent heart, and at the same time completely commit and submit your life to Him. You can also make this prayer and submission in words something like, “Lord Jesus, I am sorry for my sins and repent of them. I thank you for taking my sins upon yourself, paying for them through your life.  Because of them you died on the cross in my place, were buried, and you rose again from the grave on the third day for my salvation, and today you are the living Lord God and have freely provided to me the forgiveness, and redemption from my sins, through faith in you. Please forgive my sins, take me under your care, and make me your disciple. I submit my life into your hands." Your one prayer from a sincere and committed heart will make your present and future life, in this world and in the hereafter, heavenly and blessed for eternity.

    प्रत्येक मसीही विश्वासी को परमेश्वर द्वारा, उसके उद्धार पाने के पल से ही, परमेश्वर पवित्र आत्मा प्रदान किया गया है, मसीही जीवन जीने और परमेश्वर द्वारा उसे निर्धारित की गई सेवकाई का निर्वाह करने के लिए, उस में उसका सहायक, साथी, शिक्षक, और मार्गदर्शक बन कर सर्वदा निवास करे। परमेश्वर पवित्र आत्मा के भण्डारी होने के नाते, विश्वासियों को परमेश्वर के वचन में से उसकी सहायता और सेवाओं को योग्य रीति से उपयोग करना सीखना चाहिए। पवित्र आत्मा द्वारा विश्वासियों को सिखाई जाने वाली बातों में से एक है परमेश्वर का वचन, बाइबल। किन्तु बहुत ही कम विश्वासी उस से सीखते हैं, उस की बजाए, वे मनुष्यों और पुस्तकों से सीखने लगते हैं। ऐसा इसलिए होता है क्योंकि पवित्र आत्मा से सीखने के लिए उस के प्रति एक अनुशासन की, समर्पण और प्रतिबद्धता की आवश्यकता होती है। मनुष्यों और उनकी रचनाओं से सीखने में कुछ खतरे होते हैं, क्योंकि, वह चाहे कितना भी भक्त और परमेश्वर के प्रति समर्पित जन क्यों न हो, लेकिन फिर भी वह गलती करने वाला और असिद्ध रहता है, और ये बातें उसके जीवन और कार्यों में कभी-कभी प्रकट होती ही रहती हैं। इसलिए गलती करने वाले और असिद्ध मनुष्यों और उनके द्वारा लिखी गई पुस्तकों पर निर्भर करने से विश्वासी गलतियों में पड़ने और शैतान द्वारा बहकाए जाने के खतरे में बना रहता है।

    हाल के कुछ लेखों में हम विश्वासियों द्वारा परमेश्वर का वचन पवित्र आत्मा की बजाए मनुष्यों से सीखने के बारे में विचार कर रहे हैं। कारणों में से एक है, कुछ विश्वासियों का कुछ अगुवों और प्रचारकों को बहुत आदर-समान का स्तर देकर, उन पर अँध-विश्वास करते हुए, उन की कही गई हर बात को, बिना पहले बाइबल से जाँचे-परखे, यूँ ही स्वीकार कर लेना, और उसका पालन करने लगने की दृढ़ प्रवृत्ति रखना। उनका यह ढिठाई से मनुष्यों का अनुसरण का रवैया, उन्हें अपरिपक्व और शारीरिक मसीही बना देता है (1 कुरिन्थियों 3:3-4)। ऐसे विश्वासी ‘दूध’ के सिवाए, और कुछ भी नहीं पचा पाते हैं; अर्थात, मसीहीयत के आधारभूत सिद्धान्तों से परे और कुछ भी स्वीकार करने और सीखने नहीं पाते हैं। पिछले लेख में हम इस स्थान पर आकर रुके थे कि उनके इस ढीठ रवैये के कारण और कठोरता हो कर सुधरने की कोई इच्छा नहीं रखने के कारण, पवित्र आत्मा को पीछे हटना पड़ता है, और उन्हें उन के चुने हुए साधनों पर छोड़ देना पड़ता है। किन्तु क्योंकि परमेश्वर प्रेम और धैर्य रखने वाला परमेश्वर है, वह उन्हें त्याग नहीं देता है, वरन उन्हें केवल ‘दूध’ जिसे वे पचा सकते हैं देता रहता है; किन्तु मसीही विश्वास तथा परमेश्वर के वचन में उनकी शिक्षा इस से आगे नहीं बढ़ने पाती है। आज हम यहाँ से आगे बढ़ेंगे।

    यह ‘दूध’, आधारभूत बातें, अर्थात वे आरंभिक सिद्धान्त, जिन्हें नए विश्वासियों को जानना और सीखना चाहिए, हमें इब्रानीयों 6:1-2 में दिए गए हैं, “इसलिये आओ मसीह की शिक्षा की आरम्भ की बातों को छोड़ कर, हम सिद्धता की ओर आगे बढ़ते जाएं, और मरे हुए कामों से मन फिराने, और परमेश्वर पर विश्वास करने।और बपतिस्मों और हाथ रखने, और मरे हुओं के जी उठने, और अन्‍तिम न्याय की शिक्षारूपी नेव, फिर से न डालें।” ये संख्या में छः हैं, और पश्चाताप से लेकर अन्तिम न्याय तक का सारा क्रम इन में पाया जाता है। इब्रानीयों 5:12 से प्रतीत होता है कि उस समय में मसीही विश्वास की इन आरंभ की बातों का सिखाया जाना निर्धारित कार्य होता था। लेकिन दुःख की बात है कि आज अधिकांश मसीही, चाहे उन्हें नया जन्म पाए हुए कई वर्ष ही क्यों न हो गए हों, इन के बारे शायद ही कुछ जानते हैं। इसलिए, इन छः बातों को प्रत्येक मसीही को सिखाया जाना निर्धारित पाठ्यक्रम होना चाहिए।

    इब्रानीयों 5:11-12 हमारे सामने कुछ महत्वपूर्ण बातें लाता है:

• पहली, क्योंकि इब्रानीयों की पत्री के पाठक उन्हें सिखाई गई इन आरंभ की बातों के बारे में भूल गए थे, इसलिए उन का अपने मसीही जीवनों में बढ़ना और परिपक्व होना रुक गया था। यदि वे उन सिद्धांतों का पालन करते रहते, तो यह आशा की जाती थी कि वे ‘शिक्षक’ हो जाते और ‘ठोस भोजन’, या अन्न खाने और पचाने वाले परिपक्व जन बन जाते।

• दूसरी, मसीही जीवन में बढ़ोतरी और परिपक्वता विश्वास में आने से ले कर अभी तक के बीते समय के आधार पर नहीं है, बल्कि विश्वासियों के रवैये और व्यवहार के आधार पर है। प्रेरित पौलुस अपने युवा शिष्य तीमुथियुस को इफसुस की कलीसिया में गलतियों को सुधारने के लिए अकेला छोड़ सका (1 तीमुथियुस 1:3-4)। जिन मसीही विश्वासियों के जीवन में डाह, झगड़े, और विभाजन है, वे बाइबल के मानकों के अनुसार अभी भी अपरिपक्व और शारीरिक विश्वासी हैं (1 कुरिन्थियों 3:3)। इस से कोई अन्तर नहीं पड़ता है कि वे विश्वास में चाहे कितने भी लंबे समय से क्यों न हों, विश्वासियों में उनका स्तर चाहे कुछ भी हो, और परमेश्वर के वचन के बारे में वे चाहे कितना भी ज्ञान क्यों न रखते हों। इसलिए वे केवल इन छः आरंभिक सिद्धांतों को ही सीखने, स्वीकार करने, और समझने भर की क्षमता रखते हैं।

• तीसरा, मसीही विश्वासियों के लिए ‘ठोस भोजन’ या अन्न, जैसा कि यहाँ इब्रानीयों 5:12 में लिखा है और प्रेरित पौलुस ने 1 कुरिन्थियों 3:2 में कहा है, परमेश्वर के वचन की वो शिक्षाएँ और दर्शन हैं जो इब्रानीयों 6:1-2 में कही गई इन छः बातों से अधिक गूढ़ और गंभीर हैं, उदाहरण के लिए मसीह की सेवकाई और मलिकिसिदक (इब्रानीयों 5:10)।

• चौथा, इन आरंभिक बातों को भूल जाना, इनके प्रति लापरवाह होना, इनकी अनदेखी करना, मसीही विश्वासी को अपरिपक्व बना देता है, उसे परमेश्वर के वचन की गूढ़ बातों को ग्रहण करने और समझने के अयोग्य कर देता है, और उसे ठोस भोजन नहीं बल्कि लौट कर फिर से केवल ‘दूध’ लेने वाला बना देता है। क्योंकि तब वह ऊँचा सुनने लगता है और उसे समझा पाना कठिन हो जाता है (इब्रानीयों 5:11)।

    हम अगले लेख में यहाँ से और आगे चलेंगे तथा देखेंगे। यदि आपने प्रभु की शिष्यता को अभी तक स्वीकार नहीं किया है, तो अपने अनन्त जीवन और स्वर्गीय आशीषों को सुनिश्चित करने के लिए अभी प्रभु यीशु के पक्ष में अपना निर्णय कर लीजिए। जहाँ प्रभु की आज्ञाकारिता है, उसके वचन की बातों का आदर और पालन है, वहाँ प्रभु की आशीष और सुरक्षा भी है। प्रभु यीशु से अपने पापों के लिए क्षमा माँगकर, स्वेच्छा से तथा सच्चे मन से अपने आप को उसकी अधीनता में समर्पित कर दीजिए - उद्धार और स्वर्गीय जीवन का यही एकमात्र मार्ग है। आपको स्वेच्छा और सच्चे मन से प्रभु यीशु मसीह से केवल एक छोटी प्रार्थना करनी है, और साथ ही अपना जीवन उसे पूर्णतः समर्पित करना है। आप यह प्रार्थना और समर्पण कुछ इस प्रकार से भी कर सकते हैं, “प्रभु यीशु, मैं अपने पापों के लिए पश्चातापी हूँ, उनके लिए आप से क्षमा माँगता हूँ। मैं आपका धन्यवाद करता हूँ कि आपने मेरे पापों की क्षमा और समाधान के लिए उन पापों को अपने ऊपर लिया, उनके कारण मेरे स्थान पर क्रूस की मृत्यु सही, गाड़े गए, और मेरे उद्धार के लिए आप तीसरे दिन जी भी उठे, और आज जीवित प्रभु परमेश्वर हैं। कृपया मुझे और मेरे पापों को क्षमा करें, मुझे अपनी शरण में लें, और मुझे अपना शिष्य बना लें। मैं अपना जीवन आप के हाथों में समर्पित करता हूँ।” सच्चे और समर्पित मन से की गई आपकी एक प्रार्थना आपके वर्तमान तथा भविष्य को, इस लोक के और परलोक के जीवन को, अनन्तकाल के लिए स्वर्गीय एवं आशीषित बना देगी।

Learning from the Holy Spirit – 8

 

    The Holy Spirit of God, has been given to every Christian Believer by God at the moment of his salvation, to always reside in him as his Helper, Companion, Teacher, and Guide for living his Christian life and fulfilling his God assigned ministry responsibilities. As stewards of the Holy Spirit, the Believers have to learn from God’s Word to utilize His help and services worthily. One of the things the Holy Spirit teaches to the Believers is God’s Word, the Bible. But not many Believers learn from Him, instead, they turn to learning from men and books. This is because learning from the Holy Spirit requires a discipline, commitment, and obedience to Him. Learning from man and his works has its dangers, since no man, no matter how godly and committed to God he may be, but he is still fallible and imperfect, and this keeps showing up every now and then in his life and works. Therefore, relying upon fallible, imperfect men and the books written by them leaves the Believers open to falling into errors and being misled by Satan.

    In the recent articles, we have been considering about Believers learning God’s Word not from the Holy Spirit, but from men. One of the reasons is some Believers holding some leaders and preachers in very high esteem, and having an obstinate tendency to blindly accept and follow whatever they say and teach, without first evaluating and verifying it from the Bible. This strong attitude of following men, makes those Believers immature and carnal Christians (1 Corinthians 3:3-4). Such Believers are incapable of digesting anything but ‘milk’, i.e., incapable of accepting and learning anything beyond the basic elementary principles of Christianity. In the last article we had stopped at the point that because of this stubborn attitude, and being resistant to corrections, the Holy Spirit has to step back in the lives of such Believers, and leave them to their own chosen devices. God being a God of love, being long-suffering, He does not abandon them, but keeps on feeding them with the ‘milk’ that they can take and digest; but their learning in Christian faith and Word of God does not go beyond this. Today we will carry on about this from this point onwards.

    This ‘milk’, the basics, i.e., the elementary principles that the beginners need to know and learn, are given to us in Hebrews 6:1-2, “Therefore, leaving the discussion of the elementary principles of Christ, let us go on to perfection, not laying again the foundation of repentance from dead works and of faith toward God, of the doctrine of baptisms, of laying on of hands, of resurrection of the dead, and of eternal judgment.” They are six in number, and cover the whole spectrum from repentance up to eternal judgement. In other words, all the aspects of Christian life are covered in these six topics. From Hebrews 5:12, it seems that teaching these elementary principles was then the standard practice. But sadly speaking, today most Christians, despite being Born-Again Believers for many years, know hardly anything significant about them. Hence these six principles ought to be the standard teaching and learning curriculum for all Christians.

    Hebrews 5:11-12 brings some important points before us:

• Firstly, Because the recipients of the letter to Hebrews had forgotten what they had been taught about these elementary principles, therefore they had stopped growing and maturing in their Christian lives. Had they continued to follow these principles, the expectation was that they would have become ‘teachers’ and matured to be those who would take and digest ‘solid food.’

• Secondly, Christian growth and maturity is not according to the time one has been in the faith, but by attitudes and behaviour of the Believers. The Apostle Paul could leave Timothy his young pupil alone, to correct the errors in the Church at Ephesus (1 Timothy 1:3-4). The Christian Believers who have envy, strife, and divisions in their lives, by Biblical standards, they are still immature and carnal Christians (1 Corinthians 3:3), however long they might have been in the faith, no matter what their status may be amongst the Believers, and howsoever knowledgeable they may be about God’s Word. Therefore, they are only capable of learning, accepting, and understanding things related to these six elementary principles.

• Thirdly, the ‘solid food’ for the Christian Believers, as written here in Hebrew 5:12, and as the Apostle Paul has said in 1 Corinthians 3:2, are teachings and expositions of God’s Word that are deeper and more profound than what is covered in these six elementary principles that  are stated in Hebrews 6:1-2; e.g., things about Christ’s ministry and Melchizedek (Hebrews 5:10).

• Fourthly, forgetting, or overlooking, or ignoring these basic elementary principles, leads to loss of maturity in the Christian Believer, rendering him incapable of receiving and understanding the deeper things of God’s Word, and reverting him to requiring being fed only by milk, not solid food. Since then they become dull of hearing, and it becomes something hard to explain to them (Hebrews 5:11).

    We will carry on further about this in the next article. If you have not yet accepted the discipleship of the Lord, make your decision in favor of the Lord Jesus now to ensure your eternal life and heavenly blessings. Where there is obedience to the Lord, where there is respect and obedience to His Word, there is also the blessing and protection of the Lord. Repenting of your sins, and asking the Lord Jesus for forgiveness of your sins, voluntarily and sincerely, surrendering yourself to Him - is the only way to salvation and heavenly life. You only have to say a short but sincere prayer to the Lord Jesus Christ willingly and with a penitent heart, and at the same time completely commit and submit your life to Him. You can also make this prayer and submission in words something like, “Lord Jesus, I am sorry for my sins and repent of them. I thank you for taking my sins upon yourself, paying for them through your life.  Because of them you died on the cross in my place, were buried, and you rose again from the grave on the third day for my salvation, and today you are the living Lord God and have freely provided to me the forgiveness, and redemption from my sins, through faith in you. Please forgive my sins, take me under your care, and make me your disciple. I submit my life into your hands." Your one prayer from a sincere and committed heart will make your present and future life, in this world and in the hereafter, heavenly and blessed for eternity.
