    पिछले लेख में हमने देखा था कि मसीहियत में बहुत सी ऐसी बातें घुस आई हैं, और बैठ गई हैं, जिनका परमेश्वर के वचन बाइबल में कोई उल्लेख अथवा निर्देश नहीं है। ये सभी मनुष्यों की बनाई और गढ़ी गई बातें हैं। इसे जानना और समझना इसलिए आवश्यक है, क्योंकि अन्ततः हमे अपने जीवनों का हिसाब देने और प्रतिफल प्राप्त करने के लिए प्रभु के सामने खड़ा होना होगा, जो केवल अपने वचन के आधार पर हमारा आँकलन करेगा, हमें प्रतिफल देगा, न कि हमारे द्वारा किसी संस्था या डिनॉमिनेशन के नियमों और रीतियों के पालन, अथवा मनुष्यों द्वारा कही और गढ़ी गई बातों के आधार पर। मसीहियत में घुस आई इन बातों में से एक यह धारणा भी है कि प्रभु भोज तथा अन्य संस्कार केवल औपचारिक शिक्षा प्राप्त करने तथा विधिवत निर्धारित किये गए पास्टरों के द्वारा ही दिए जा सकते हैं। पिछले लेख में हमने इस बात के बारे में देखना आरम्भ किया था। आज हम इस पर कुछ आगे विचार करेंगे।

    अपने अध्ययन में हमने देखा है कि प्रभु यीशु ने प्रभु भोज की स्थापना अपने शिष्यों के साथ की थी - और वे सभी साधारण लोग थे, समाज के साधारण तबकों से, और उनमें कुछ अनपढ़ भी थे (प्रेरितों 4:13); उनमें से किसी के पास भी कोई विधिवत धार्मिक शिक्षा या डिग्री नहीं थी, और न ही उनमें से किसी ने भी प्रभु का शिष्य, उसका प्रेरित बनने से पहले किसी औपचारिक धार्मिक गतिविधि में कोई भाग लिया था। इन ही लोगों को प्रभु ने उसके लिए और शिष्य बनाने तथा प्रभु ने जो सिखाया था उसे उन शिष्यों को भी सिखाने की ज़िम्मेदारी सौंपी (मत्ती 28:18-20), किन्तु कभी भी यह नहीं कहा कि उनमें से किसी को भी किसी औपचारिक शिक्षा या प्रशिक्षण पर जाने की आवश्यकता है। प्रथम कलीसिया में प्रभु के शिष्यों को जो एकमात्र शिक्षा और प्रशिक्षण प्राप्त होता था, वह सभी सदस्यों के लिए एक समान ही था, जो उनके प्रभु के नाम में एकत्रित होने के समय उन्हें दिया जाता था (प्रेरितों 2:42)।

    बाइबल में कभी भी कहीं भी यह नहीं कहा गया अथवा संकेत किया गया है कि मसीही संस्कारों, जिनमें से एक प्रभु भोज भी है, का दिया जाना केवल किसी औपचारिक शिक्षा प्राप्त तथा विधिवत निर्धारित किए गए पादरी के द्वारा ही हो सकता है, अन्यथा वह व्यर्थ और निष्फल होगा। यह एक मनुष्यों का बनाया हुआ नियम और परंपरा है, लेकिन यह कभी भी परमेश्वर के वचन और निर्देशों का स्थान नहीं ले सकती है, उन से उच्च स्तर नहीं पा सकती है। यदि यह गढ़ी हुई धारणा एक बार को सच भी हो, यदि इसे स्वीकार भी कर लिया जाए, तो फिर उन अनगिनत मसीही विश्वासियों का क्या होगा जो सारे संसार भर में, आरंभिक शताब्दियों में, इन संस्कारों में अन्य विश्वासियों के द्वारा भाग लेते रहें हैं, इससे पहले कि ये औपचारिक शिक्षा और विधिवत निर्धारण किए हुए पादरी आए और प्रभु की कलीसिया का प्रबंधन और संचालन अपने हाथों में ले लिया? क्या परमेश्वर उन विश्वासियों द्वारा भाग लेने को अनुचित और अस्वीकार्य ठहरा देगा? या, परमेश्वर ने उसे स्वीकार किया है, उसके लिए उन्हें आशीष दी है? यदि किसी अन्य मसीही विश्वासी के द्वारा दिए जाने को परमेश्वर ने तब स्वीकार किया और आशीष दी, तो फिर अपने बच्चों के लिए आज क्यों नहीं देगा? हम इसके बारे में और आगे अगले लेख में देखेंगे।

    In the previous article we have seen that many things have entered in and taken root in Christianity that have neither been mentioned nor commanded to be done in the Bible. They are all man-made and contrived things. It is important to learn this since eventually, we will have to stand before the Lord to give an account of our lives and receive our rewards, and He will evaluate us only on the basis of His Word, and reward us accordingly. He will not do so on the basis of our observing and fulfilling the rules and rituals of any organization or denomination, nor according to what men have said and contrived. One of the concepts that have crept into Christianity is that the Holy Communion and other sacraments can only be administered by a formally trained and ordained Pastor. We had begun to consider this issue in the previous article. Today, we will see some other aspects of this thinking.

    In our study we have seen that the Lord Jesus established the Holy Communion with His disciples - all, ordinary people, from common walks of life and even uneducated (Acts 4:13); none had any religious education or degree, and none was ever a part of any formal religious activities before becoming the Lord’s disciple, and His Apostle for the world. To them the Lord entrusted making other disciples and teaching them what He had taught them (Matthew 28:18-20), never making it necessary that any of them go for any formal religious training or education. The only education and training the Lord’s disciples had in the first Church was that which was common for everyone, done in their gathering together in the name of the Lord (Acts 2:42).

    Nowhere in the Bible has it ever been stated or even indicated that the Christian sacraments, of which the Holy Communion is one, can only be rightfully administered by a formally educated and ordained Pastor, else it will be vain and unacceptable. This is a man-made rule and tradition, and can in no way supersede God’s Word or authority. If this contrived doctrine were to be true, were to accepted, then what of al those countless Believers through the earlier centuries, who all over the world participated in the Holy Communion, and in other sacraments administered through other Christian Believers, before these formally educated and ordained pastors came around and took over the management of the Lord’s Church, and started administering them? Will God consider their partaking as unacceptable and inconsequential? Or, if God will accept and bless their participation administered through another committed Christian Believer, then why will He not do the same for His children today? We will look further into this issue in the next article.

    If you are a Christian Believer and have been participating in the Lord’s Table, then please examine your life and make sure that you are actually a disciple of the Lord, i.e., are redeemed from your sins, have submitted and surrendered your life to the Lord Jesus to live in obedience to Him and His Word. You should also always, like the Berean Believers, first check and test all teachings that you receive from the Word of God, and only after ascertaining the truth and veracity of the teachings brought to you by men, should you accept and obey them (Acts 17:11; 1 Thessalonians 5:21). If you do not do this, the false apostles and prophets sent by Satan as ministers of Christ (2 Corinthians 11:13-15), will by their trickery, cunningness, and craftiness render you ineffective for the Lord and cause severe damage to your Christian life and your rewards.

    If you have not yet accepted the discipleship of the Lord Jesus, then to ensure your eternal life and heavenly rewards, take a decision in favor of the Lord Jesus now. Wherever there is surrender and obedience towards the Lord Jesus, the Lord’s blessings and safety are also there. If you are still not Born Again, have not obtained salvation, or have not asked the Lord Jesus for forgiveness for your sins, then you have the opportunity to do so right now. A short prayer said voluntarily with a sincere heart, with heartfelt repentance for your sins, and a fully submissive attitude, “Lord Jesus, I confess that I have disobeyed You, and have knowingly or unknowingly, in mind, in thought, in attitude, and in deeds, committed sins. I believe that you have fully borne the punishment of my sins by your sacrifice on the cross, and have paid the full price of those sins for all eternity. Please forgive my sins, change my heart and mind towards you, and make me your disciple, take me with you." God longs for your company and wants to see you blessed, but to make this possible, is your personal decision. Will you not say this prayer now, while you have the time and opportunity to do so - the decision is yours.

    We have studied about the Holy Communion through its antecedent, the Passover from Exodus 12 in the Old Testament; then, from the New Testament, about its being established by the Lord Jesus from the Gospel accounts; and about the errors and pitfalls in observing it from 1 Corinthians 11:17-34. From the last article we have started to consider some common questions related to its observance, and seeing what God’s Word says about them. In the previous article we had considered about the frequency and time interval between successive participations in the Lord’s Table. Today, we will look into another contentious issue - is the Holy Communion to be administered only by an ordained Pastor? It is important and necessary to look into these and other similar questions from God’s Word, since there are many varying views that have created confusions about them in Christendom. Various denominations, sects, and groups have their own interpretations and rules-regulations about them, which they impose on their congregations through the hegemony of the religious leaders. This has become possible only because of one basic and very gross short-coming amongst the followers of the Lord Jesus - they have lost interest in personally studying God’s Word the Bible, and have substituted it with blindly accepting anything told and taught to them from the pulpit as always being reliable.

    But we all need to be aware of, and understand that finally when the end comes and we stand before God to give an account of our lives, none of us will be judged by the rules-regulations of any denomination, group, or sect. Neither will we be judged on the basis of our obedience to our religious leaders and following them. Though they will be accountable for the leading they have done (Ezekiel 34:1-10), but they will not be able to absolve us from any wrongs we have done because of trusting and obeying them. We will all be judged by the Lord Jesus, solely on the basis of His Word, and our obedience to it (John 12:48; Acts 17:30-31; 2 Corinthians 5:10). None will be able to claim any leniency or exemption on the grounds of not knowing God’s Word, because to every Born-Again Christian Believer, God has given His Holy Spirit to indwell in him; and one of the functions of the Holy Spirit is to teach God’s Word to God’s children (John 14:26), provided they are willing to spend time and learn from Him. Hence it is necessary for each and every Christian Believer to personally study and learn God’s Word, and obey it rather than vainly obey the contrived doctrines of men that will only lead to destruction (Matthew 15:7-9, 13-14). That is why Paul makes a categorical statement in his letter to the Galatians, “For do I now persuade men, or God? Or do I seek to please men? For if I still pleased men, I would not be a bondservant of Christ” (Galatians 1:10), and we would do well to not only pay heed to it, but also apply it in our own lives.

    Coming to our question for today, it is a general feeling and understanding amongst most Christians, especially those from denominational Churches, that the Holy Communion can only be administered by an ordained Pastor. But Biblically speaking, there is no support, none whatsoever, stated or implied, for this misunderstanding. One of the reasons for this misunderstanding is that the Holy Communion has been ascribed meanings and purposes, which never were a part of it, since its inception; and secondly, because the religious leadership has used this misunderstanding to maintain their hegemony in the Church.

    We will consider this question further in the coming articles, and will see the related things from the Bible.

पिछले लेख में हमें इफिसियों 4:11 में दी गई चौथी सेवकाई, परमेश्वर के झुण्ड का चरवाहा, या रखवाला अर्थात पास्टर होने के बारे में देखा था। हमने मूल यूनानी भाषा में प्रयोग किए गए शब्द के द्वारा देखा और समझा था कि रखवाले या पास्टर का कार्य भेड़ों की रखवाली और देखभाल करने वाले चरवाहे के समान ही होता है। वचन हमने यह भी सिखाता है कि प्रभु यीशु ही हमारा "प्रधान रखवाला" है, और प्रत्येक रखवाले को प्रभु के समान और उसकी अधीनता में होकर अपनी जिम्मेदारी का निर्वाह करना है; क्योंकि प्रत्येक चरवाहे को एक न एक दिन अपने कार्य का हिसाब प्रभु को देना होगा। फिर हमने भजन 23 से रखवाले द्वारा सकारात्मक रीति से अपने दायित्व के निर्वाह के बारे में देखा था। आज हम एक बार फिर, पुराने नियम से ही रखवाला होने के दायित्व के नकारात्मक निर्वाह के बारे में देखेंगे।  

कलीसिया के रखवाले के लिए भजन 23 के इस सकारात्मक उदाहरण की तुलना में, यहेजकेल 34 अध्याय में इस्राएल के चरवाहों द्वारा अनेकों प्रकार से परमेश्वर की भेड़ों के प्रति उनकी लापरवाही और परमेश्वर की अनाज्ञाकारिता के नकारात्मक व्यवहार के उदाहरण दिए गए हैं, और उनके इस दुर्व्यवहार के लिए परमेश्वर द्वारा उनकी भर्त्सना करने, और उन्हें दण्ड देने, तथा अपनी भेड़ों को संभालने का वर्णन है। यहेजकेल 34:2-6 में चरवाहों के दुर्व्यवहार को बताया गया है, और शेष अध्याय परमेश्वर द्वारा स्थिति को नियंत्रण में लेने, अपनी भेड़ों को संभालने, एकत्रित करने, उनकी सही देखभाल करने, तथा चरवाहों से हिसाब लेने, उनको उनका दण्ड देने का वर्णन है। 

हम यहेजकेल 34:2-6 में चरवाहों द्वारा दायित्वों को नहीं निभाने के बारे में देखते हैं: 

* पद 2 - वे अपने पेट भरते थे, किन्तु भेड़-बकरियों के पेट भरे होने की चिन्ता नहीं करते थे।

* पद 3 - वे अपने लिए सर्वोत्तम भोजन और कपड़ों का इंतज़ाम रखते थे, किन्तु भेड़-बकरियों को उनके लिए उपयुक्त भोजन के स्थान पर नहीं ले जाते थे।

* पद 4 - वे बीमारों, रोगियों, घायलों की चिन्ता नहीं की, न उनके उपचार के लिए प्रावधान किए। न ही उन चरवाहों ने खोई हुई या निकाली हुई भेड़ों को फिर से झुण्ड में लौटा लाने के लिए कोई प्रयास किया। वरन् वे चरवाहे बल और ज़बरदस्ती से भेड़ों पर अधिकार जताते थे।

* पद 5 - समय और अवसर पर चरवाहों के भेड़ों के साथ उपस्थित न होने के कारण भेड़ें तितर-बितर हो गईं, वन पशुओं का आहार हो गईं। 

* पद 6 - भेड़ों के तितर-बितर हो जाने, इधर-उधर भटकने के बावजूद, चरवाहों ने उनकी सुधि नहीं ली, उन्हें ढूँढ़ने नहीं गए, उन्हें वापस सुरक्षा में लौटा लाने नहीं गए। 

यहेजकेल 34 अध्याय में इस्राएल के उन चरवाहों ने जो कुछ किया, उसके लिए शेष अध्याय परमेश्वर के क्रोध का, उनसे हिसाब लेने का, उन्हें दण्ड देने का, और कैसे परमेश्वर स्वयं अपनी भेड़ों को लौटा कर लाएगा, उनकी देखभाल करेगा, आदि बातों का वर्णन करता है। यदि आज कलीसिया के रखवाले भी वही करेंगे जो इस्राएल के उन चरवाहों ने किया, तो आज के ये पास्टर भी परमेश्वर के उसी क्रोध, न्याय, और दण्ड के भागी होंगे, जैसे वे चरवाहे हुए। वरन् कलीसिया के रखवालों को परमेश्वर के निर्देशों के अनुसार कलीसिया के लोगों की रखवाली करनी है।

यदि आप एक मसीही विश्वासी हैं, और यदि प्रभु परमेश्वर ने आपको अपनी कलीसिया के लोगों के मध्य कोई ज़िम्मेदारी दी है, तो आपकी उन्नति और आशीष अपने मसीही जीवन तथा प्रभु परमेश्वर द्वारा सौंपी गई ज़िम्मेदारी को भली भांति निभाने और परमेश्वर को प्रसन्न करने वाली सही रीति से उसका निर्वाह करते रहने से ही है। परमेश्वर के वचन के सच्चाइयों को सीखने और सिखाने में समय लगाएं, शैतान द्वारा गलत शिक्षाओं को फैलाने वाले झूठे प्रेरितों और भविष्यद्वक्ताओं (2 कुरिन्थियों 11:13-15) की गलत शिक्षाओं को समझने, जाँचने-परखने और उनसे बच कर चलने, तथा औरों को सचेत करने में संलग्न रहें (यहूदा 1:20-23)।

यदि आपने अभी तक प्रभु की शिष्यता को स्वीकार नहीं किया है, तो अपने अनन्त जीवन और स्वर्गीय आशीषों को सुनिश्चित करने के लिए अभी उसके पक्ष में अपना निर्णय कर लीजिए। जहाँ प्रभु की आज्ञाकारिता है, उसके वचन की बातों का आदर और पालन है, वहाँ प्रभु की आशीष और सुरक्षा भी है। यदि आपने अभी तक नया जन्म, उद्धार नहीं पाया है, प्रभु यीशु से अपने पापों के लिए क्षमा नहीं माँगी है, तो अभी आपके पास समय और अवसर है कि यह कर लें। प्रभु यीशु से अपने पापों के लिए क्षमा माँगकर, स्वेच्छा से तथा सच्चे मन से अपने आप को उसकी अधीनता में समर्पित कर दीजिए - उद्धार और स्वर्गीय जीवन का यही एकमात्र मार्ग है। आपको स्वेच्छा और सच्चे मन से प्रभु यीशु मसीह से केवल एक छोटी प्रार्थना करनी है, और साथ ही अपना जीवन उसे पूर्णतः समर्पित करना है। आप यह प्रार्थना और समर्पण कुछ इस प्रकार से भी कर सकते हैं, “प्रभु यीशु मैं आपका धन्यवाद करता हूँ कि आपने मेरे पापों की क्षमा और समाधान के लिए उन पापों को अपने ऊपर लिया, उनके कारण मेरे स्थान पर क्रूस की मृत्यु सही, गाड़े गए, और मेरे उद्धार के लिए आप तीसरे दिन जी भी उठे, और आज जीवित प्रभु परमेश्वर हैं। कृपया मेरे पापों को क्षमा करें, मुझे अपनी शरण में लें, और मुझे अपना शिष्य बना लें। मैं अपना जीवन आप के हाथों में समर्पित करता हूँ।” परमेश्वर आपके साथ संगति रखने की बहुत लालसा रखता है तथा आपको आशीषित देखना चाहता है, लेकिन इसे सम्भव करना आपका व्यक्तिगत निर्णय है। सच्चे और समर्पित मन से की गई आपकी एक प्रार्थना आपके वर्तमान तथा भविष्य को, इस लोक के और परलोक के जीवन को, अनन्तकाल के लिए स्वर्गीय एवं आशीषित बना देगी। क्या आप अभी समय और अवसर होते हुए, इस प्रार्थना को नहीं करेंगे? निर्णय आपका है।

Pastors, Their Role & Functions (2)

    In the last article we had begun to consider the fourth ministry given in Ephesians 4:11, that of being a pastor or caretaker, a shepherd of God's flock. We had seen and understood on the basis of the word used here in the original Greek language that the ministry of the Pastor is similar  to that of a shepherd or caretaker of the sheep. The Word also teaches us that the Lord Jesus is the "Chief Shepherd" and all the other Pastors or caretakers have to function like Him and fulfill their responsibilities under Him; since every shepherd will eventually have to give an account to the Lord. Then we had seen from Psalm 23, the ways the shepherds have to fulfill their responsibilities in a positive manner. Today too we will once again see from the Old Testament about the negative attitude and irresponsible behavior of the shepherds.

In contrast to the positive example of a Godly Pastor given in Psalm 23, God in His Word, in Ezekiel 34, has given the negative description of the callous, irresponsible, uncaring shepherds of Israel, who by their disobedience to God, allowed His sheep, the people of Israel to suffer. God severely denounces them and their ways, and tells them of His judgment and punishment for them and how He will gather together and take care of His sheep. In Ezekiel 34:2-6 is given the irresponsible and wrong behavior of the shepherds, and the rest of the chapter tells about God taking hold of the situation, bringing it under control, gathering together and taking proper care of His sheep; of taking an account from the shepherds and dispensing their due punishment upon them.

We see from Ezekiel 34:2-6 the irresponsible and wrong behavior of the shepherds:

* Verse 2 - They would feed themselves, but did not feed their flocks.

* Verse 3 - They made provisions of the best food and clothing for themselves, but made no arrangements of proper food for the flocks.

* Verse 4 - They did not take care or bother about helping the weak, the sick, the wounded in the flock. Nor did those shepherds go seeking after and bring back those who had been driven away or got lost. Rather, they ruled over the flock with force and cruelty.

* Verse 5 - Because at the required time and need, the shepherds were not present with the sheep, the sheep were scattered and became food for the wild beasts.

* Verse 6 - The shepherds never bothered about the sheep, even though they were scattered and wandered here and there; they never went searching for them nor did  they restore them back to security.

What those elders of Israel, those wayward shepherds of Israel did in Ezekiel 34, the rest of chapter 34 details the anger and wrath of God; speaks of how He will take an account and punish them. The chapter also speaks of how God will bring back His sheep and take proper care of them. If today, the Pastor, i.e., the shepherd of God’s flock will do what those shepherds of Israel did, then they too will be similarly called to account and suffer the anger, wrath, and punishment from God, as those shepherds did at that time. Therefore, the present-day Pastors are not to do any of that, but take care of the flock, the Church entrusted to him, just as God instructs him to do.

If you are a Christian Believer, and if God has given you a responsibility amongst His people, then your edification, growth, and blessings are in diligently fulfilling the responsibility in the manner that pleases God. Utilize your time in learning and teaching the truths of God’s Word; and be careful to learn about, identify, stay safe and warn others about the false apostles and prophets, and their wrong teachings (2 Corinthians 11:13-15), infiltrated amongst God’s people by Satan; save others from falling prey to Satan’s devices (Jude 1:20-23).

If you have not yet accepted the discipleship of the Lord Jesus, then take a decision in its favor now to secure your eternal life and heavenly blessings. The Lord's security and blessings are present where there is obedience of the Lord, where His Word is honored and followed. If you are still not Born Again, have not obtained salvation, or have not asked the Lord Jesus for forgiveness for your sins, then you have the time and opportunity to do so right now. Ask the Lord Jesus to forgive your sins, and voluntarily and sincerely surrender yourselves into His hands - this is the only way to salvation and heavenly life. All you have to do is say a short prayer, voluntarily and with a sincere heart, with heartfelt repentance for your sins, and a fully submissive attitude. You can do this in this manner, “Lord Jesus, I confess that I have disobeyed You, and have knowingly or unknowingly, in mind, in thought, in attitude, and in deeds, committed sins. I believe that you have fully borne the punishment of my sins by your sacrifice on the cross, and have paid the full price of those sins for all eternity. Please forgive my sins, change my heart and mind towards you, and make me your disciple, take me with you." God longs for your company and wants to see you blessed, but to make this possible, is your personal decision. One prayer said with a sincere and surrendered heart will turn your present and future, your life here on earth and in the next world, forever and make you heavenly and blessed. Will you not say this prayer now, while you have the time and opportunity to do so? The decision is yours.

    इसके बाद हमने स्त्रियों द्वारा परमेश्वर के लोगों के मध्य प्रशासनिक एवं वचन की सेवकाई के उदाहरणों को देखा था। हमने ध्यान किया था कि पुराने नियम में केवल पुरुषों को ही याजकीय ज़िम्मेदारियाँ दी गईं थीं, कभी भी किसी भी स्त्री को नहीं, चाहे वे स्त्रियाँ याजकीय वंशजों में से ही क्यों न हों। नए नियम में भी हमने देखा था कि यद्यपि प्रभु यीशु और उसके शिष्यों के साथ कुछ स्त्रियाँ भी रहती थीं और उनकी देखभाल करती थीं, किन्तु प्रभु ने कभी भी किसी भी स्त्री को न तो प्रेरित नियुक्त किया, और न ही अन्य शिष्यों के साथ कभी किसी सेवकाई के लिए भेजा। और साथ ही आरंभिक कलीसिया में जो लोग कलीसियाओं से संबंधित विषयों पर चर्चा और निर्णय करने के लिए सभाओं में एकत्रित होते थे, उनमें कभी भी कोई भी स्त्री सम्मिलित नहीं थी, उन सभाओं में भी नहीं जिनमें स्त्रियों से संबंधित बातों पर चर्चा होती थी।

    इसके बाद हमने पुराने और नए नियम में दिए गए भक्त स्त्रियों के उदाहरणों को देखा था, जिनकी सेवकाई का दुरुपयोग बहुधा यह दिखाने के लिए किया जाता है कि क्योंकि बाइबल में इन स्त्रियों की सेवकाइयों का उल्लेख है, इसलिए यह अनुमति आज की स्त्रियों को भी दी जानी चाहिए। बाइबल में उन स्त्रियों के बारे में दी गई जानकारी के आधार पर हमने उनके उदाहरणों के लिए देखा था कि जब केवल बाइबल में दी गई जानकारी के आधार पर उनका निष्पक्षता तथा बिना किसी पूर्व-धारणा को आधार बनाए हुए विश्लेषण किया जाता है, तो कभी भी उनके उदाहरणों को उचित रीति से इस दावे की पुष्टि के लिए उपयोग नहीं किया जा सकता है कि स्त्रियों को भी कलीसियाओं में प्रचार करने और पास्टर बनने की अनुमति है।

    अगले लेख में हमने परमेश्वर के वचन से जो अभी तक देखा और समझा है, उसके आधार पर निष्कर्ष निकालेंगे।

According to the Bible, Do Women Have the Permission to Serve as Pastors and Preach from the Pulpit in the Church?

Part 15 – Summary

 

For the past two weeks we have been considering a topic that has been a cause of much confusion and debate, as well as divisions in Christendom. The approach we have taken is to see what the Word of God says, and then on the basis of what is written in the Bible, consider and analyze the various arguments put forward by those who support women preaching in Churches and becoming Pastors, and see if this notion has any Biblical standing or support, or not.

    We started off by first considering Satan’s strategies. One of his strategies is to mislead people through misinterpretation of God’s Word, causing them to misunderstand and wrongfully apply its teachings. The second strategy that he often uses, and has used very effectively over here is to turn our attention to what God has not given, instead of being aware and thankful for what God has given, and using the God given things for God’s glory and our benefit. Through this strategy he makes people to feel deprived and then by make the mistake of disobeying God and coming to harm. As part of this strategy, he puts misunderstandings and doubts in people heart about this topic. We had seen that it is not that God has withheld the understanding and ministry of God’s Word from women. Just as with men, God has given women also the gift of understanding and teaching His Word; only that God has assigned women to do this ministry amongst other women and children – places and people that men cannot go and serve for this ministry.

    By turning the attention of women to do what has been assigned by God for men to do – minister in Churches as preachers, and become Pastors, Satan has beguiled people to ignore God’s gifts and instructions, to not utilize what God has given the women, and thereby be disobedient to God, and lose their blessings. Because the Bible very clearly in 1 Corinthians 14:34-35 and 1 Timothy 2:11-12, forbids women from becoming preachers and Pastors in Churches. and in these passages, the reasons for this are also given by God. Moreover, there is nothing in the Bible to support the assumptions that these instructions were meant for only a particular Church of that time, or were only for women of that era, since most of the women were not literate or educated at that time. In this context we had also seen that the argument, “since women have the ability to understand, preach, and teach God’s Word, therefore, they should be allowed to do so in the Churches” is vain, since Satan too has the ability to understand, preach, and teach from God’s Word, and does so (2 Corinthians 11:3, 13-15); but this does not mean that he has God’s sanction to do so, and should be allowed to do it!

    We then considered examples from God’s Word about administrative and Word ministry by women amongst God’s people. We recalled that in the Old Testament all priestly duties were given to and carried out only by men, never by any women, not even by women of the priestly families. In the New Testament too, we had seen that though women were amongst the Lord Jesus’s followers and ministered to Him and His disciples, but the Lord never appointed any of them as Apostles, nor ever sent any of them for ministry, as He sent out His disciples. Also, in the various councils that met for deliberations in the initial Church, to sort out various issues arising in the Churches, there is no mention of any women being a part of the councils and deliberating over the issues with men, even while considering matters related to women.

    We then considered the examples of various godly women of the Old and New Testament, whose ministry examples are often misused to prove that since these women had a ministry in the Bible, therefore, this should be granted to the women now also. Through analyzing the information given in the Bible about those women, we saw that their examples, when considered purely on the basis of information given about them in the Bible, without any pre-conceived notions, and in an unbiased manner, can never rightfully be used to justify the claim that the Bible permits women to preach in the Churches, or be appointed as Pastors.

    In the next article we will come to the conclusions that we can draw from all that we have considered and analyzed regarding this topic from God’ Word so far.

Please forgive my sins, take me under your care, and make me your disciple. I submit my life into your hands." Your one prayer from a sincere and committed heart will make your present and future life, in this world and in the hereafter, heavenly and blessed for eternity.

    यहाँ पर असमंजस का और इस पद के अनुचित अर्थ के साथ उपयोग किए जाने कारण है मूल यूनानी भाषा का शब्द Diakonos (डायकानोस) की आज की समझ। वर्तमान में कलीसियाओं में यूनानी भाषा के इस शब्द Diakonos (डायकानोस) से बना शब्द “डीकन” एक अधिकार का और कलीसियाओं एवं पास्टरों के ऊपर नियंत्रण और प्रबंधन का स्थान रखने वाले के लिए उपयोग किया जाता है। पास्टरों में से ही तरक्की पा कर लोग डीकन बनते हैं और फिर वे कई कलीसियाओं पर तथा उनके पास्टरों पर अधिकार रखते हैं। इसलिए आज लोग यह समझते हैं कि यदि फीबे “डीकन” थी, तो वह पास्टरों पर अधिकार रखने वाली और अवश्य ही कलीसिया में प्रचार करने वाली रही होगी। किन्तु लगभग 2000 साल पहले, मूल यूनानी भाषा के सामान्य प्रयोग के अनुसार, पौलुस ने इस पत्री में इस शब्द का प्रयोग किया था, जिसके अनुसार फीबे अधिकारी और प्रचार करने वाली नहीं, कलीसिया की सेविका, वहाँ रख-रखाव और देखभाल करने वाली थी। समय के साथ शब्द के अर्थ और समझ में लोगों में आए परिवर्तन के कारण, शैतान ने यह भ्रम और गलत अभिप्राय फैला रखा है, और इसका अनुचित उपयोग करवा रहा है।

    कुछ लोग इसी Diakonos (डायकानोस) शब्द का एक और अभिप्राय, ध्यान कीजिए, अनुवाद नहीं वरन अभिप्राय, पास्टर भी बताते हैं; किन्तु यह मात्र उनके द्वारा दिया जाने वाला एक तात्पर्य है, वास्तविक अर्थ नहीं है। इफिसियों 4:11 में प्रभु द्वारा दी गई प्रचार से संबंधित तीन सेवकाइयों को बताया गया है – सुसमाचार सुनाने वाले, रखवाले (पास्टर) और उपदेशक (या शिक्षक), और इन तीनों में से किसी भी सेवकाई के लिए मूल यूनानी भाषा में Diakonos (डायकानोस) शब्द नहीं प्रयोग किया गया वरन उससे भिन्न तीन शब्द प्रयोग किए गए हैं। अंग्रेज़ी भाषा में पूरे नए नियम में, शब्द “pastor” केवल एक बार प्रयोग हुआ है, इफिसियों 4:11 में; और इस पद में मूल यूनानी भाषा में प्रयोग किया गया शब्द है poimen (पोइमेन), जिसका शब्दार्थ होता है एक चरवाहा या रखवाला। इसीलिए हिन्दी की बाइबल में इस पद में ‘पास्टर’ नहीं ‘रखवाला’ लिखा गया है; और नए नियम में अन्य स्थानों पर भी जहाँ यूनानी भाषा में poimen (पोइमेन) आया है, वहाँ हिन्दी एवं अंग्रजी में इसका अनुवाद केवल चरवाहा ही किया गया है। पूरे नए नियम के किसी भी अनुवाद में कहीं पर भी कभी भी Diakonos (डायकानोस) को पास्टर अनुवाद नहीं किया गया है, क्योंकि मूल यूनानी भाषा के अनुसार वह इसका अनुवाद है ही नहीं।

    फीबे चर्च की सेविका थी – चर्च और चर्च के लोगों की देखभाल, संयोजन, रख-रखाव आदि करने में उसकी भूमिका थी, न कि प्रचार करने में; सेविका का अर्थ प्रचारिका अथवा पास्टर नहीं होता है। इसलिए फीबे के उदाहरण को लेकर महिलाओं के कलीसिया में प्रचार करने या पास्टर होने को जायज़ ठहराना अनुचित है, वचन का दुरुपयोग है, और वास्तव में ‘गलत शिक्षा’ है। यदि इन महिलाओं को फीबे का अनुसरण करना है तो कलीसिया में आएँ और उसकी देख-भाल और रख-रखाव में भाग लें, जैसे फीबे करती थी, उसके नाम में पुल्पिट को अपनी इच्छा पूरी करने के लिए प्रयोग क्यों करना चाहती हैं? अगले लेख में हम कुछ अन्य उदाहरणों का विश्लेषण करेंगे।

According to the Bible, Do Women Have the Permission to Serve as Pastors and Preach from the Pulpit in the Church?

 

Part 10 – Analysis of Examples of Women of the New Testament – 1

 

    In the previous article we had seen some examples of women of the Old Testament, who have been called “prophetess” in God’s Word, and whose example is being misinterpreted and misused to try to justify the false claims that women have the sanction from God’s Word to be preachers and pastors in the Church. When we saw the information given about them in God’s Word, and analyzed it, it became evident that the Scriptures do not give any such permission, and their example cannot be used to prove the point that is being attempted. From today, we will look at some examples of women from the New Testament, and analyze them to see if they provide the permission for women to preach and be pastors in the Church.

    One very commonly used example is that of Phoebe, about whom the Apostle Paul writes, “I commend to you Phoebe our sister, who is a servant of the church in Cenchrea.” It is very clear that Phoebe has been called a ‘servant’; she has neither been called a ‘preacher’, nor has she been called a ’pastor’. The word used here in the original Greek language is ‘Diakonos’, and it means just what it has been translated – one who serves, i.e., takes care, helps or attends to others. Therefore, for Phoebe too, this word should be taken with this very meaning; it should not be given any different meaning to give it a new implication, different from that in the original. This word has been translated as ‘servant’ in this verse, which is the correct meaning and translation of this word; and this word has been used at other places in the New Testament with this very meaning. Therefore, here too it should be understood and used with this actual meaning only.

    The cause of confusion and of this verse being misused is the meaning that is attached to this Greek word Diakonos today. In the present day Churches the word “Deacon” which is a word derived from this Greek word Diakonos, is a word that is used in the Churches for an office of authority and of having charge, of managing many Churches and their pastors. The Deacons are promoted from amongst the pastors, and then are appointed over them. Therefore, today people assume and understand that if Phoebe was a “deaconess”, then she would have been a pastor and preacher in the Church prior to being promoted as “Deaconess”. But in the Greek language usage of this word about 2000 years ago, the commonly used and understood sense of this word was for a servant, an attendant; not an officer holding authority and charge over others. It was with this sense that Paul wrote about her, using the word “deaconess” in the original Greek language of the letter to Romans. Phoebe was one who was taking care of, looking after, and serving the Church. With time, because of the change in understanding and usage of the word, a different meaning has come into the minds of people, and Satan has misused it to create this false impression and wrong ideas in the congregations.

    Some people ascribe another implication to this word Diakonos – take note, that is not the meaning, but an implication added on to the word; they imply that this word also means being a pastor. But this is not the real meaning of the word, just an understanding that some people want to convey. In Ephesians 4:11, three different ministries related to preaching have been given – evangelists, pastors and teachers. For none of these ministries, in the original Greek language, has the word Diakonos been used, but three other, different words have been used. In the English translations of the Bible, in the New Testament the word “pastor” has been used just once, only in this verse Ephesians 4:11. And the word used in the Greek language is ‘Poimen’, which has been translate as ‘pastor’ here. The word Poimen literally means “shepherd”, or one who takes care; and in the English translations of the Bible, wherever the Greek word Poimen has come, except for this one instance, at every other place it has always been translated only as “shepherd”. In the whole of the New Testament, never has the word Diakonos ever been translated as “pastor” in any English translation, since the actual meaning of this Greek word never can be a “pastor”.

    Phoebe was a servant of the Church; her role was in taking care of the Church and the congregation. The word ‘servant’ does not mean or imply ‘preacher’ or ‘pastor; and her role was never of a preacher or a pastor of the Church. Therefore, to take the example of Phoebe and try to use it to justify women being preachers and pastors in the church is to misuse God’s Word, is a wrong teaching. Those who want to use the example of Phoebe, should come into the Church as ‘servants’ and spend time looking after the Church, the congregation, serving them and attending to them, as Phoebe used to do. Why should they misuse her name and ministry to fulfill their selfish desire of using the pulpit? In the next article we will look at some other examples and analyze them.
