The Elementary Principles – 88

Judgment of Believers – 2

In the last article, while considering the sixth elementary principle “Eternal Judgment,” we had closed with the assertion that the final judgment mentioned in the Bible, contrary to common belief and understanding, is essentially the judgment of the truly Born-Again Christian Believers. Today we will begin seeing this from God’s Word, and as we develop this theme, we will also consider some other related Bible texts that may seem to be confusing with this assertion. Before we proceed further, we need to realize a fact regarding the usage of two words; quite often these words are used interchangeably or as synonyms, but actually they have a difference in meaning, and cannot always be used interchangeably and synonymously. These two words are “judgment” and “punishment” and very often judgment is also taken to mean punishment. But actually speaking, to judge someone, or the carrying out of judgment of someone means evaluating that person for something, on the basis of some given criteria, ascertaining and weighing the evidence for or against that person, coming to a certain conclusion about the matter, and then awarding a result to that person based on the evaluation done and the conclusion reached. This result that is awarded can be a punishment, or a reward, or being acquitted of the allegation against that person. So, punishment is one of the possible concluding parts of the judgment or evaluation of the person. But usually, often judgment is taken to mean handing over a punishment to the person being judged.

In light of what has been said above, from our context, for our topic of discussion and learning, i.e., from the point of view of “Eternal Judgment,” please ponder over what the Lord Jesus has said in this passage, John 3:16-18, paying particular attention to verse 18, that has been made prominent: “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved. He who believes in Him is not condemned; but he who does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.” God has made a provision for all of mankind to be saved, and has made it freely available to everyone. Whosoever accepts God’s provision and believes in the Lord Jesus, from the moment of his accepting and believing, becomes a saved person, a child of God (John 1:12-13), and is set free from the condemnation of sin, forever. But those who do not accept and believe in God’s provision, all through their lives, and die in their state of non-acceptance and unbelief, they while they are alive on earth, as well as when they die and their soul reaches the next world, are in the state of condemnation, die in that state of condemnation, and reach the next world as those irreversibly and permanently condemned for eternity. Their change of state from being under condemnation to being saved could have been altered on earth; had they at any time accepted God’s offer and believed in the Lord Jesus. But not having accepted God’s offer, not having believed in the Lord Jesus, once they leave earth, the state of their soul becomes irrevocable, unchangeable, permanent; they are forever condemned to be in hell. Now, it matters little, rather, not at all, what kind of life they have lived on earth and what people say of them, and remember them to be. Whether they have led very good lives, or whether they have led very bad lives, or whether they have been just “ordinary” or “average” kind of people of the world, in any case, because they have rejected God’s provision and not believed in the Lord Jesus, they will only be considered condemned and sent to hell for eternity.

We will consider the implications of this in the next article, and see how it applies to the assertion that the judgment will be of Believers, and not of non-believers.

If you have not yet accepted the discipleship of the Lord, make your decision in favor of the Lord Jesus now to ensure your eternal life and heavenly blessings. Where there is obedience to the Lord, where there is respect and obedience to His Word, there is also the blessing and protection of the Lord. Repenting of your sins, and asking the Lord Jesus for forgiveness of your sins, voluntarily and sincerely, surrendering yourself to Him - is the only way to salvation and heavenly life. You only have to say a short but sincere prayer to the Lord Jesus Christ willingly and with a penitent heart, and at the same time completely commit and submit your life to Him. You can also make this prayer and submission in words something like, “Lord Jesus, I am sorry for my sins and repent of them. I thank you for taking my sins upon yourself, paying for them through your life.  Because of them you died on the cross in my place, were buried, and you rose again from the grave on the third day for my salvation, and today you are the living Lord God and have freely provided to me the forgiveness, and redemption from my sins, through faith in you. Please forgive my sins, take me under your care, and make me your disciple. I submit my life into your hands." Your one prayer from a sincere and committed heart will make your present and future life, in this world and in the hereafter, heavenly and blessed for eternity.

Does the Branch Cast Away in John 15:1-6 show that a Believer can be “Cut-Off” and be Destroyed? - Part 3

In the past two articles we have been considering John 15:1-6, particularly 15:2, to see whether it is a proof that salvation can be lost and the errant Believer can be cast away or destroyed or not, as some people allege on the basis of this verse 2. In the first article we had seen some basic principles of Bible study and interpretation, that help us in avoiding as well as identifying wrong interpretations and meanings. In the second article, we had applied the principle of studying the verse or passage in its context to this passage, i.e., John 15:1-6. By studying it in its context it had become apparent that this passage and its verse 2 cannot mean that salvation can be lost and a Believer can be cast away into destruction. Today, in this third article on this passage, we will apply another principle of Bible study and interpretation to this passage and verse 2, - that the Bible does not contradict itself, and see how interpreting John 15:2 to mean salvation can be lost, brings a contradiction with other Bible passages and verses, and therefore becomes an unacceptable interpretation of the passage and verse.

3. Some Other Related Bible Teachings, that Salvation cannot be lost:

  • Romans 8:1 says that there is no condemnation for those who are “in the Lord”. John 15:2, is about those “branches”, i.e., the disciples, who are “in the Lord”. If John 15:2 teaches salvation can be lost, then it directly contradicts Romans 8:1. But since the Bible never contradicts itself, therefore, the interpretation that John 15:2 teaches salvation can be lost is Biblically untrue and unacceptable.

  • John 10:28, 29 says that no one can take God’s people, His sheep, out of God’s and Jesus’s hands. A characteristic of God is that God alone is omnipotent, i.e., no one is stronger than God in any manner – neither physically, nor intellectually, nor spiritually. From Mark 3:27, we can see that to take a Believer away out of God's hands, for destruction means being stronger than God and able to over-power God – an impossibility. If Satan can take away a child of God out of His hands, then it implies that Satan is more powerful than God, physically, spiritually, and intellectually, and God is unable to do anything about it – another impossibility. Hence John 15:2 cannot imply that Satan can take away a Believer into destruction.

  • 1 Corinthians 3:11-15 tells us that a Believer can suffer loss of his rewards, but never of his salvation. In other words, once saved is saved forever.

  • We see from Luke 15:13, 30 that the Prodigal Son lived a very wayward life. But we also see from this parable that once he repented and returned to his father, everything was forgiven and forgotten. Though he lost the possessions that he had left with from home, he suffered shame, hunger, and insult, but he never lost his status of being a son in his home. He was restored to the same status as he had earlier, as soon as he repented and returned home.

  • Parable of the Fig tree (Luke 13:6-9) – The owner came seeking fruit from the tree for three years, but never found any. Therefore, he wanted it cut and removed from his garden. But the gardener asked one more year, some more time to make renewed efforts to make it bear fruit. This shows the forbearance of God. Instead of being hasty in judgment, especially condemnation, God gives time, environment, and opportunity (2 Peter 3:15) to his wayward children.

  • The incidence of the cursing of the Fig tree (Mark 11:13-14, Mark 11:20-21) cannot be used here since the Fig tree in this instance was putting up a pretense – it was not the season for figs, but that tree had put out leaves, that suggested the presence of fruit in it, which actually was not there. The tree was cursed because of its hypocrisy, not for the absence of fruit.
