Teachings Related to the Elementary Principles – 12

Repentance From Dead Works - 8

In our study of Elementary Principles from Hebrews 6:1-2, we are presently considering the first principle, i.e., repentance from dead works; i.e., repentance from those seemingly religious and good works, that do not cause any spiritual growth or maturity in the person doing them. In the past two articles we have seen two very common misconceptions related to God the Holy Spirit, that are quite emphatically preached and taught by some sects and denominations. They are the false teachings and wrong doctrines which they preach and teach about Believers receiving God the Holy Spirit, and about speaking in “Tongues.” We have seen that neither of the two have any Biblical support to make them acceptable. There is another similarly very emphatically preached and taught misconception about Holy Spirit baptism, which again does not have any Biblical standing or support for the form it is preached, taught, and emphasized; we will not consider it now but will take it up when we are learning about the third elementary principle, i.e., baptisms. Today we will consider another kind of dead works, that of the Believer's way of honoring the Lord in their lives.

In Luke 10:38-42 we have an incident where the Lord Jesus is welcomed into a home, by a lady named Martha. Martha also had a sister, named Mary. We see this family again later on in John 11, in the incidence of raising of Lazarus from the dead, and from there we learn two more things, that Martha and Mary also had a brother named Lazarus and Jesus loved this family (John 11:5), and this family belonged to Bethany. We note from the plural “they” in the opening sentence of Luke 10:38 that quite likely the Lord was travelling with some other people, probably His twelve disciples; and that it was Martha who invited the Lord into their home. As the hostess, Martha was distracted from spending time with the Lord and got busy preparing for and serving the Lord (v.40). But her sister Mary, instead of helping Martha, simply sat at the feet of Jesus and listened to Him (v.39), not worrying about caring for and serving the Lord. After sometime, as we see from v.40, Martha got irritated with what Mary was doing – simply sitting at the Lord’s feet and listening to Him, instead of helping her in taking care of and serving their guest - the Lord; and her irritation spilled over onto her guest, the Lord Jesus. She is critical of Him that He is not caring about her needs and concerns, and expresses her annoyance, for His not asking Mary to help her.

But the Lord, as we see in vs. 41-42, responds lovingly and patiently towards Martha. He does not discredit her; He acknowledges her efforts at doing many things for caring for Him and looking after Him, but the Lord also points out that what she has chosen to do for expressing her love and honor for Him has only caused worries and trouble for her. In contrast, Mary chose to do only one thing, i.e., sit at the Lord’s feet and listen to Him; and the Lord commends her for it. In contrast to what the Lord had to say about Martha’s way of expressing her care and concern for the Lord, the Lord calls Mary’s way as one that was needed or necessary, calls it the good part, and assures that it will not be taken away from her. Both sisters loved the Lord and the Lord too loved them both; both had chosen their own ways to express their care and concern for the Lord. Though approving Mary’s way, the Lord does not say that only Mary, not Martha, actually cared for Him. But quite evidently, the Lord preferred and approved Mary’s way, calling it good, necessary, and everlasting; while pointing out that Martha’s way will only lead to worries and troubles.

We see here two ways of honoring the Lord, of expressing care and love for Him. Martha’s way is to express it through presumptive efforts, by doing many activities, many things for the Lord, that she thought would please the Lord. But her being involved in these self-determined activities did not give her the time and desire to sit and listen to the Lord, to know from Him, what pleased Him, and then do accordingly. What Martha did is what most Christian Believers also do; their love and commitment towards the Lord is not in question, but the problem is in the way they express their love towards Him, and the returns they get for their efforts. Martha’s way of presumptive activities, though seemingly necessary and good, have a big drawback, of not letting the one engaged in the activities have time to sit and listen to the Lord, first know His will, and then act according to it. Those who work in this manner presume and want that whatever they do must be accepted and liked by the Lord. In contrast Mary’s way seems to be quite passive and ordinary, but it is the way the Lord likes and wants – to sit at His feet, to listen to Him, to learn from Him, and receive from Him things that will never be taken away, i.e., will be everlasting. For the Christian Believer, Mary’s way is to spend time with God’s Word, the Bible – not just reading about it or reading books related to it and its teachings, but the Bible itself. Allowing time for the Lord to speak through His Word with them, to meditate and ponder over what He teaches, apply the Lord’s instructions in their life.

Spending time at the Lord’s feet, learning from Him through His Word, letting God’s word abide in them, is neither a waste of time, nor something passive – it requires much higher discipline, effort, and perseverance than physical activities, and it is the proof of loving the Lord (1 John 2:3-5). There are great promises and benefits associated with maintaining this discipline. Those who do so: they will renew their strength, never be tired, but rise like eagles (Isaiah 40:31); they will be loved by God the Father and the Lord, who will come and abide with them (John 14:21, 23); the Lord has promised to fulfil their desires (John 15:7), and they will abide in His love (John 15:10). Therefore, every Christian Believer needs to evaluate the place God’s Word has in his life, how much time he personally spends in studying and learning from God’s Word, and in rectifying the shortcomings that are revealed. As the Lord Himself has said, Martha’s way of trying to please the Lord through presumed activities will eventually only lead to worries and troubles; it is vain and fruitless – a kind of dead works that need to be repented of and cast away. Mary’s way of spending time at the Lord’s feet, i.e., reading, studying, learning, and applying God’s Word is what will benefit the Believers and needs to be followed. But it requires a lot of discipline and perseverance since Satan will try his utmost to keep the Believers from doing this.

In the next article we will look at another kind of dead work, of Believers becoming man-pleasers.

If you have not yet accepted the discipleship of the Lord, make your decision in favor of the Lord Jesus now to ensure your eternal life and heavenly blessings. Where there is obedience to the Lord, where there is respect and obedience to His Word, there is also the blessing and protection of the Lord. Voluntarily repent of your sins and ask the Lord Jesus for forgiveness of your sins, voluntarily and sincerely surrender yourself to Him - this is the only way to salvation and heavenly life. You only have to say a short but sincere prayer to the Lord Jesus Christ willingly and with a penitent heart, and at the same time completely commit and submit your life to Him. You can also make this prayer and submission in words something like, “Lord Jesus, I am sorry for my sins and repent of them. I thank you for taking my sins upon yourself, paying for them through your life.  Because of them you died on the cross in my place, were buried, and you rose again from the grave on the third day for my salvation, and today you are the living Lord God and have freely provided to me the forgiveness, and redemption from my sins, through faith in you. Please forgive my sins, take me under your care, and make me your disciple. I submit my life into your hands." Your one prayer from a sincere and committed heart will make your present and future life, in this world and in the hereafter, heavenly and blessed for eternity.

Holy Spirit – Our Helper – 5

In Our Trials – 3

We are considering the role of Christian Believers as stewards of their God given gifts. The Lord Jesus promised His disciples in John 14:16 that God the Holy Spirit will be with them as their God given Helper, or Companion. Therefore, we need to be aware of how to be a good steward of the Holy Spirit, so we can utilize His help and guidance appropriately. As we have been seeing in the preceding articles, some Believers have a tendency of wanting to use the Holy Spirit as their substitutes, to do their works and fulfil their responsibilities for them. We have seen how and why this is an unBiblical concept, and hence all prayers to get this done will remain unanswered, since they are made on wrong premises. In the last article we had started to look in some detail into this tendency of some Believers asking God to take over from them, pleading an inability of some kind or the other to do the work. In this context we had seen that most often this plea is made not for externally evident or physical things, but for physically non-evident things, e.g. those related to thoughts, habits and attitudes, things in the mind and heart. Today, we will carry on with this, and try to understand why Believers find it difficult to control the non-tangible, while they can usually control the tangible.

Often, there is a vicious cycle at work why Believers find it difficult to control the non-tangible. These Believers usually spend a significant part of their time in pursuing worldly interests, attractions, and physical pleasures through their mobile phones, computers and internet usage, or some other means. They know and acknowledge this shortcoming in them, and may even acknowledge this short-coming in their public prayers, but they never take up or stick with God’s solutions for rectifying it. Since they do not spend adequate time with God and His Word, therefore, their spiritual nourishment and growth levels remain low, their spirits remain weak and vulnerable to satanic influences. Hence, they keep falling for the same temptations over and over again. Then they think that since they are unable to overcome on their own, therefore, they will ask God to deliver them out of this, ask God to do it for them. But they never resolutely follow the solution that God already has given to them in His Word. They want God to strengthen their spiritual lives, but do not want to let go of the causes for their spiritual weakness. They make the same mistake that the Israelites made in fetching the Ark of the Covenant to the battle-field (1 Samuel 4).

The Israelites trusted that the Ark’s presence would make them victorious, but suffered an even worse and humiliating loss, since they had not removed the sin, the main reason for their defeat from amongst them. Though God’s Ark was with them, but His power was not amongst them. Therefore, they were not victorious; instead, because of using, rather, misusing God’s Ark without consulting Him and taking His permission, based on their own notions and desires, they suffered an even worse defeat. Similarly, the prayers of these Believers to be delivered by God from their poor spiritual lives just remains a repetitive infructuous prayer. Since the primary necessity of strengthening their spiritual lives through putting away their sin that is weakening them and spending time with God and His Word to gain spiritual wisdom and strength to overcome these satanic attacks is not being met.

Why do these Believers not do what the Lord said in Matthew 5:29-30 and Matthew 18:8-10? In these two passages the Lord is talking about cutting off the offending body parts, those parts that make the person sin, stumble, and fall; and then enter the Kingdom of God without them, as well as without the problems those parts create for the Believers. Even if we do not literally do that to our bodies, but the underlying principle is applicable to all aspects of our lives, including the spiritual aspects. The least we can do is to remove from us the things that cause us to stumble, fall, and create these problems for us. Instead of repeatedly falling for their addiction and problems, why not just cut off the internet connection? Or, at the very least, uninstall and eliminate the apps that cause problems of indiscipline and time wasting, e.g., apps related to worldly entertainment, social-media, games etc., i.e., the apps which they themselves confess and say, take up their time and keep them from having a disciplined spiritual life? Another thing that can be done is to throw away their smartphones that help them in doing the wrong things, and instead just have a small simple phone, capable only of making calls and text messaging, in which the apps that make them fall cannot function.

But instead of implementing the God given methods, they want to enjoy those very physical pleasures that obstruct their spiritual growth, but also want God to make them spiritually strong and overcoming. They want God to keep pulling them out of the mire they repeatedly keep getting themselves into and keep them washed and clean (2 Peter 2:22). An underlying, unstated thought may be that they want to escape their accountability for this, i.e., they would not be held guilty if God does not do it for them, because then they can conveniently blame Him for not delivering them from the temptations and sinful tendencies, although they had sincerely and repeatedly prayed and begged for it so many times; so, why should they be considered guilty?

This is the same tendency that Adam displayed about Eve, who gave him the fruit to eat; though at the behest of Eve, yet, Adam ate the forbidden fruit out of his own will, not under any compulsion from anyone. But he put the blame on God for the sin that he committed - God you are responsible for her, for what she has done, and for what she has made me do. I had not asked for her, it was you, who gave her to me; you should have known what she would do. So, why are you asking me about what she has done? Similarly, since God is responsible for providing them the resources for their physical conveniences of life, He should take the responsibility and the blame for the ill-effects of the conveniences. Why should the Believers be held guilty? Even though it is the Believers who are misusing these things, and not rectifying the situations despite being well aware of what to do and what not to do. Just as Adam’s reasoning did not work, so too their reasoning will not work either. These prayers of asking God to take over and do the job of fulfilling their responsibilities are actually a cover-up in the garb of godliness for their wilful disobedience of God’s commands and deliberate disregard of God’s instructions about winning over such situations and circumstances.

In the next article we will see how Believers very often and very conveniently misinterpret and misapply God’s commands given to us to set our lives right; and thereby, try to avoid being accountable to God.

If you have not yet accepted the discipleship of the Lord, make your decision in favor of the Lord Jesus now to ensure your eternal life and heavenly blessings. Where there is obedience to the Lord, where there is respect and obedience to His Word, there is also the blessing and protection of the Lord. Repenting of your sins, and asking the Lord Jesus for forgiveness of your sins, voluntarily and sincerely, surrendering yourself to Him - is the only way to salvation and heavenly life.

Improper Behavior Towards God’s Word - 8

In the previous article we have seen from the examples of incidents in King Saul’s life, that obedience to God not only means complete adherence to what He has said about doing things for Him; but also doing them the way He wants them done, through the means He wants them done, in the time and manner He wants them done. Doing this is mandatory, since God’s Word is a form of the Lord Jesus Christ (John 1:1, 14), and any editing or modification of God’s Word is editing or modifying the Lord God - which is insulting God and showing man to be better than God.

King Saul did what God wanted done, but not the way God had said it ought to be done. This was considered as disobedience in God’s eyes, and was rejected by God. And eventually Saul had to pay a heavy price for doing things in his own way, and for doing things in the fear of man, to please man, rather than doing them to please God.

Things like - ignoring God’s Word, and God’s instructions; placing the fear of man over and above the fear of God in our lives; to walk and work according to the instructions of a man to show respect and honor for that man, even though what that man says is at variance from or contrary to God’s instructions; and assuming that we have the liberty to interpret and to use God’s Word, and God’s instructions according to our own discretion and understanding, instead of being diligent to stay obedient to God - they eventually result in earning the displeasure of God and suffering His judgment, instead of getting His approval and blessings. Today we will see this Biblical principle at work in King David’s life, and then in the next article we will see about it from King Uzziah’s life.

Let us look at David’s example through 1 Chronicles chapters 13 and 15. The background is that the Ark of God was stationed in Kirjath Jearim, in the house of Abinadab for twenty years, and Saul after becoming King had done nothing about it (1 Samuel 7:1-2). David after becoming King, in his love and reverence for God, decides to fetch the Ark back to Jerusalem. So, to do this, he does what seems to him the right thing to do. Note that in this whole process there is no mention of consulting God or His Word, of taking His guidance, getting His consent and approval for the manner he wanted to do it. Consider carefully the steps David takes in 1 Chronicles 13:1-4:

  • David consults the captains of his army and every other leader (vs. 1).

  • David places receiving the consent and approval of men first, and then after that perfunctorily mentions the Lord God (vs. 2a).

  • David primarily calls for the remaining people from the lands, and then as an afterthought the priests and the Levites (vs. 2b).

  • They all with one accord decide to bring back the Ark, “for the thing was right in the eyes of all the people” (vs. 4); they were mindful and obedient to being right in the eyes of men, but there  is no mention or concern, whether it was right in the eyes of God.

So, everybody goes to Kirjath Jearim, to bring up the Ark of God. To carry the Ark they use a new cart, and David and all Israelites joyfully sing, play music, and worship God (vs. 7-8). But then, all of sudden things go wrong with the transportation, and God being angry kills a person named Uzza. David is shocked, angry, and afraid of God, drops the transportation, and leaves the Ark in another man’s house for the next three months (vs. 9-14).

Then we see in 1 Chronicles chapter 15 that sense dawns on David, and he realizes his error. Now, he first prepares a place, a tent in Jerusalem (vs. 1), and then acknowledges what God had already put in his Word through Moses, “No one may carry the ark of God but the Levites, for the Lord has chosen them to carry the ark of God and to minister before Him forever” (1 Chronicles 15:2). So, now though he again assembles all Israel, but now instead of taking upon himself the transportation of the Ark, he hands the responsibility of the transportation to the descendants of Aaron and the Levites (vs. 4-12).

David also confesses his error of not doing it the God appointed way the first time, “For because you did not do it the first time, the Lord our God broke out against us, because we did not consult Him about the proper order” (1 Chronicles 15:13). The priests and the Levites first sanctify themselves, then bring up the Ark the way God had got it written through Moses (vs. 14-15). This time, appropriate worship leaders, singers, music players, etc. are also appointed to lead in praise and worship (vs. 16-24); and then, this time God helped them bring the Ark (vs. 26). Like the previous attempt, all of Israel was joyfully celebrating the event and worshipping (vs. 25, 28); but now the result was different from their earlier attempt, because now things had been done in God’s ordained manner.

Once again, it is so apparent, so clear that even though God’s Word is there, God’s instructions of doing a thing are available, yet even David, a man after God’s own heart (Acts 13:22), assumes things instead of following those instructions. David was zealous for the Lord God, wanted to honor him, express his love and reverence for Him. Though what he wanted to do for God was right, but the way he initially did it was not according to God’s Word, not according to God’s instructions already given beforehand. So, it was unacceptable to God, was nothing short of disobedience in the eyes of God. Hence the painful consequences; instead of obedience to God, being obedient to the godly yet human leader, King David, cost Uzza his life.

The fact that David, David’s Captains, his leaders, the people of Israel were all agreed upon doing this and were of one mind about doing it; the people’s obeying and following their King and godly leader, and obeying his instructions, their collective exuberant joyful and worship did not in any way make things right for them, nor did it justify their disregard and disobedience for God’s instructions. Despite all this, in God’s eyes, their disobedience remained disobedience, and God had to deal with it as disregard to His Word and disobedience, even though the main person involved and getting it done was David – a man after God’s own heart.

Only when God’s Word was given its due place and importance, when the right thing was done the right way – according to God’s instructions for it, did God accept it, bless it, and He helped His people for it. The lesson is clear, no man, not even someone of the spiritual stature of David has the right to treat God’s Word inappropriately; not even as an expression or attempt to honor God or show love and reverence towards God; no one can misuse God’s Word and get away with it.

To be a steward of God’s Word means to make sure that God’s Word is taken, understood, and followed just as God has instructed, and not according to any man’s fancy or desire, even if that fancy or desire is for honoring God, to express love and reverence for God. Following God’s Word in its true form, the form it has been given to us, is the only thing accepted as obedience by God; any manipulation of God’s Word according to man’s mind, for whatever purpose, is disliked and rejected by God, and it has serious deleterious consequences. In the next article we will reaffirm this Biblical principle from the life of King Uzziah.
