Excommunication From the Church – 5

Every Born-Again Christian Believer, being a steward of God for the provisions and privileges God has given him, will eventually also have to give an account to God for his stewardship, and will be rewarded by the Lord accordingly. As steward of the Church and fellowship in which God has placed him, the Believer has to ensure the growth of the Church and spiritual progress of the other Believers in the fellowship. For these to happen, the maintaining of discipline in the Church and fellowship is very important; and for maintaining discipline some harsh measures may also be required at times. Presently, from, Matthew 5:23-24 and Matthew 18:15-17 we have been considering the exclusion and excommunication of a stubborn, unrelenting Believer persisting in maintaining his differences and conflicts with some other Believers or Church leaders, and refusing to listen to anyone for correcting himself.

In the last article we have seen what the Lord Jesus meant when he said for such an errant Believer, “let him be to you like a heathen and a tax collector” and we also saw that no man, whoever he may be in the Church or fellowship, can decide about excommunicating him. It is only the Lord’s decision, and we are to only abide by it, implement it. In the preceding articles we have seen that this whole process of disciplining an errant Believer reflects the love, nature, and behavior of the Lord, and of His being omniscient about everyone - from before their birth to after their death. Analyzing the Lord’s statement in its context and through the practices of the Jewish society of that time, we have seen that the statement does not mean to totally cut-off all contact and relationships with the errant Believer and cast him away from the Church, but minimizing socially mingling with him to make him feel humiliated, ashamed, and isolated, so that he may repent of his wrong doings. Today we will consider this a bit further, and see some other associated points about this.

Once the situation has come to the point when there is no other alternative left, but to separate out such a person, God’s Word also shows that this separation should be moderated. The purpose of the exercise is not to totally cut-off the person and that too permanently, but to bring him to realization and repentance. Bringing the errant back into the Church should always be aimed for through forgiveness and reconciliation, as is the nature of God, and as we have seen earlier also when considering Matthew 5:23-24. This is not just in the New Testament, in this period of grace, but was also seen in the Old Testament, in the period of the Law; please see 2 Samuel 14:1-24. We see here, in the incidence of Absalom and David, how the wise woman from Tekoa talks to King David about a characteristic of God relevant to the situation at hand, “For we will surely die and become like water spilled on the ground, which cannot be gathered up again. Yet God does not take away a life; but He devises means, so that His banished ones are not expelled from Him” (2 Samuel 14:14). Once again, we see that God, the offended one, the one against whom the wrongs have been committed, and the one who is aggrieved party, “He devises means, so that His banished ones are not expelled from Him” – God banished, but God takes the initiative to devise means for the offender to be reconciled with Him.

And Paul, under the Holy Spirit has also said the same in 2 Thessalonians 3:14-15 – “And if anyone does not obey our word in this epistle, note that person and do not keep company with him, that he may be ashamed. Yet do not count him as an enemy, but admonish him as a brother.” God has had it written very clearly in His Word that the purpose of not keeping company with a disobedient Believer is to bring him to shame – what we have been learning above and in the previous articles. Along with this, God’s related instructions for further behavior towards this disobedient person are also clear and important – treat and admonish him as a brother, not as an enemy. Once again emphasizing what we have been seeing in the previous articles that no truly Born-Again Believer, i.e., a member of God’s Church, His family, a part of the Body and Bride of Christ Jesus can ever be absolutely cut-off and cast-off from the Church and fellowship. God does not do it, and no man, despite his standing and reputation in the Church or fellowship, has any authority or permission to do it. Rather, after an appropriate period of time, there should be active efforts, initiated by the offended parties, by the Church, to bring this person back into fellowship and be restored in the Church and fellowship.

We see this again from Paul’s example in 2 Corinthians 2:5-10. It seems, from this passage, that someone in the Corinthian Church had said or done something against Paul, and his actions had not only grieved Paul, but also a good number of people in that Church; and then they on their own had decided to put him away from the fellowship. The text neither suggests that Paul had raised the matter of that man’s being offensive towards him in the Church, nor does it say that Paul asked them to do what they did. They, it seems, had acted on their own in this matter; remember that this was a time when the New Testament had not been written, and people were prone to do things according to their own understanding. Now, when the news of what had been done reached Paul, he acted in the spirit of 2 Samuel 14:14, he devised a way to get the person restored back into the fellowship. Paul tells the Church in Corinth that he has forgiven him and asks them all to also forgive and comfort that person, and restore him back to fellowship. Paul does not order them to do this, he only proposes it to the Church in Corinth, leaving the decision in their hands A very important thing to note from this incidence is that the like excommunication, the restoration too has to be through the Church congregation, done in the will of the Church, and not by the personal decision of an individual. Though Paul, at a personal level, is not holding any grudge against that person, has forgiven him, yet, despite his status and reputation, he still wants the Church to be involved in the forgiveness and restoration of that errant person; instead of imposing his own personal decision upon them.

To summarize, in matters of personal differences and conflicts between the Believers, even if these differences are with the Church leaders, God has instructed in His Word that the offended person has to take the initiative and have the matter resolved in a spirit of forgiveness and reconciliation. If the matter is not resolved at the personal level, it should be tried through meditation of one or two others from the Church; and if even they fail, it should be brought to the notice of the Church congregation, and if the errant Believer refuses to listen to even the Church, only then is he to be separated from the general company and socializing of the community, to make him feel ashamed and repent of his wrongs. But at no point of time, is he to be considered totally and permanently cut-off and cast-away from the Church and fellowship, or an enemy. No man has the authority or permission to put anyone out of the Church and fellowship; it has to be done only through the process given by God. Moreover, the intention should still remain to bring the errant one back into fellowship, and the offended person, in the spirit of forgiveness and reconciliation, ought to devise means to have him restored back into fellowship in the Church.

In the next article, we will see some instructions in God’s Word for Believers to withdraw themselves from certain persons, for some given reasons.

If you have not yet accepted the discipleship of the Lord, make your decision in favor of the Lord Jesus now to ensure your eternal life and heavenly blessings. Where there is obedience to the Lord, where there is respect and obedience to His Word, there is also the blessing and protection of the Lord. Voluntarily repent of your sins and ask the Lord Jesus for forgiveness of your sins; voluntarily and sincerely surrender yourself to Him - is the only way to salvation and heavenly life. You only have to say a short but sincere prayer to the Lord Jesus Christ willingly and with a penitent heart, and at the same time completely commit and submit your life to Him. You can also make this prayer and submission in words something like, “Lord Jesus, I am sorry for my sins and repent of them. I thank you for taking my sins upon yourself, paying for them through your life.  Because of them you died on the cross in my place, were buried, and you rose again from the grave on the third day for my salvation, and today you are the living Lord God and have freely provided to me the forgiveness, and redemption from my sins, through faith in you. Please forgive my sins, take me under your care, and make me your disciple. I submit my life into your hands." Your one prayer from a sincere and committed heart will make your present and future life, in this world and in the hereafter, heavenly and blessed for eternity.

Purpose of the Church

In the previous review-article we have seen why it is necessary for every Born-Again Christian Believer to learn about the Church of God and about fellowshipping with God’s children. Because, it is a stewardship entrusted to us by God, and we have to fulfil it worthily, since eventually we will have to give an account of it to Him. We have been learning about the Church from the Lord Jesus’s statement in Matthew 16:18, where the word “Church” has been used in the Bible for the first time. We have seen in the previous articles, as well as the review article, that the Lord Jesus has not in the least, left any aspect of His Church, in the hands of anyone other than Himself. This shows how important and dear to His heart the Church is. This fact is of paramount importance, and today, through the purpose of the Church, we will see why this is so. Then, in the subsequent articles, based on what we have learnt about the Church so far, we will see the practical implications, i.e., how we need to live and behave in the Church.

What is the purpose of the Lord in building His Church, and in so minutely examining us (1 Corinthians 3:13-15), before joining us to His Church? To understand this, we need to go back to the first sin committed in the Garden of Eden, when Adam and Eve, beguiled by Satan, disobeyed God. This opened the way for sin to enter into creation, and sin’s harmful effects spread into and spoiled the whole of creation (Romans 8:19-22). Before this sad and painful event, man had an open, unbroken fellowship with God, which was broken by sin. Since then, God is engaged in the process of restoring back this fellowship with man, to remove the seeds of sin sown by Satan in the lives of men, and to give back to man the place and position (Romans 8:15-17; 1 Corinthians 6:2-3) He had given to him at the time of his creation (Genesis 1:28), and gather man to be with Him in that fully restored status (Ephesians 6:25-27).

That is why He is so minutely managing and carrying out this whole process, all by Himself, so that nothing of Satan has any chance of remaining behind to once again ruin things. That is why, in our character, behavior, and mutual fellowship, He does not want to see anything whatsoever of the world, man, and Satan; but only the things which are of Him and His Word. And, a Believer’s abiding only in the Lord and His Word, not in anything made-up or created by man (1 John 2:3-6); living to only be a God pleaser, not a man-pleaser (Galatians 1:10), are the evidences that he actually is obeying the Lord’s making him without any spot or wrinkle.

If you are a Christian Believer, then once again it is our humble but ardent request that you earnestly examine and ensure your actual status with the Lord, now while you have the time and opportunity. By being born in a particular family, or by following and fulfilling the rules, regulations, rites, rituals, feasts, festivals, and ceremonies of any sect or denomination, or because of any number of one’s previous generations being ‘Christians’ in the past does not make anyone a person of the Lord and a member of His Church. This only happens by a person’s taking a willing, conscious decision to repent of one’s sins, ask Him for forgiveness of sins, accept the Lord Jesus as savior and Lord, fully surrender and commit one’s life to Him, to live in obedience to Him and His Word (Acts 17:30-31; Romans 10:9-10). If you have any doubts whatsoever about your being Born-Again, then please get them clarified and settled now; please do not ignore, delay, or postpone doing so.

If you have not yet accepted the discipleship of the Lord, make your decision in favor of the Lord Jesus now to ensure your eternal life and heavenly blessings. Where there is obedience to the Lord, where there is respect and obedience to His Word, there is also the blessing and protection of the Lord. Repenting of your sins, and asking the Lord Jesus for forgiveness of your sins, voluntarily and sincerely, surrendering yourself to Him - is the only way to salvation and heavenly life.

Laws Demands - 2

In the previous article we had seen the demand of the law, that it is mandatory to obey it in its entirety, one mistake, one error renders everything else vain (Galatians 3:10; James 2:10). We had also seen that it is impossible for man to fulfil this demand (Acts 15:10); no man has ever been able to do so. This impossible demand is associated with another limitation, that the Law is incapable of restoring man back into fellowship with God.

It is a Biblical fact that as soon as a person repents of sins, receives the forgiveness of sins from the Lord Jesus, accepts as Jesus as Lord, and submits his life to Him, from that very moment his body becomes the temple of God's Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 3:16; 6:19); and the Holy Spirit comes in to reside in him (Ephesians 1:13). It was in this context that God the Holy Spirit put a question to the Galatian Christians through the apostle Paul (Galatians 3:1-5), since they had begun to deviate toward the observance of the Law. The question was, "This only I want to learn from you: Did you receive the Spirit by the works of the law, or by the hearing of faith?" (Galatians 3:2); "Therefore He who supplies the Spirit to you and works miracles among you, does He do it by the works of the law, or by the hearing of faith?" (Galatians 3:5). Through Paul, the Holy Spirit asked that though you have received the Holy Spirit because of believing the gospel of faith; it is by obeying that gospel of faith that you have been accepted and re-established into fellowship with God, and He has started residing in you, with you; so why are you now deviating from the faith and going to the Law? Despite knowing very well that your fellowship with God cannot be restored by keeping the Law?

The question that the Holy Spirit posed to the Galatian Christians, the same question is equally valid for us today; especially for those who want to be justified in the sight of God by observing the "law" of customs, rules & regulations, traditions, festivals, etc. Paul wrote clearly, "But that no one is justified by the law in the sight of God is evident, for "the just shall live by faith" (Galatians 3:11). So, for now, if you are wanting to justify yourself by observing any sort of "law" — whether that of God, or of your religion, creed, community, or denomination — and are trying to make yourself acceptable to God through the works of the flesh; then pay heed and understand that God's Word clearly states, that you become righteous and acceptable to God, are reconciled with Him, not by keeping the Law, but only by following the God given path of repentance and submission to the Lord (Romans 5:1, 11). Therefore, while you have the time and the opportunity, take the right decision, decide on the right path, and leave the useless and fruitless path.

The Church, or, Assembly of Christ Jesus - 17

English Translation

Restoration of the Pre-sin Condition

In the previous articles, we have been looking at important things from the Lord’s statement, “...on this rock I will build My church…” said by the Lord Jesus in Matthew 16:18. We have seen that, Biblically, the Church is not a building or a place of worship; it is a group of people called-out and gathered by the Lord Jesus Christ, those that accept Him as the one and only God appointed savior of the world, and on this basis they have asked for forgiveness of their sins from the Lord Jesus, and have surrendered their lives to Him, to live in His obedience. Related to this sentence, we had seen three things about the Church: First, it is the Lord Jesus Himself who is gathering together His people; none can become ‘His people’ and join His Church on any other basis or criteria - if they try to do, the Lord separates them out now, or will do it eventually.  Second, the Lord Himself looks after and takes care of His people in the Church; He alone has the full ownership and authority of His Church. Although the Lord has given some responsibilities for the managing and functioning of the Church to some people chosen by Him for this, but only He has the ownership, and will take an account from those He has appointed to look after the Church. The Lord does not tolerate any carelessness or harm to His Church from anyone. Thirdly, the Church of the Lord Jesus is still “Under Construction”; the Lord Jesus Himself is building it. He alone determines who will do what, where, and when in His Church, no man, whoever he may be, has any say in this. So, everything related to the Church of the Lord Jesus is under the control of the Lord Himself; no person or organization has any say or interference in it, whatever be the status, or respect, or ranking of that person or institution.

In the Great Commission that the Lord gave to His disciples, before His ascension to heaven (Matthew 28:18-20; Mark 16:15-19; Luke 24:47; Acts 1:8), was for them to go into the world and preach the gospel to all people, to tell them about repentance of their sins and receiving forgiveness of sins by accepting Jesus as Lord and committing their lives to Him. In other words, the Lord’s perspective was not just for a particular place or people, but for everyone in the world. Therefore, the Church of the Lord too is not confined to any particular place or people, but is universal. The Lord Jesus is engaged in gathering His people from all over the world to build His Universal Church. The truly Born-Again Christian Believers are the Lord’s co-workers, His helpers in this, through preaching the gospel. Through the preaching of the gospel, we bring people to the Lord, join them to the Lord, and those who join with the Lord with a true heart and full submission, those who accept the Lord Jesus as their savior and Lord, the Lord then assigns that person a place in His Church, and starts preparing him to take that place and work for Him accordingly. But along with this, the Lord also fully well knows the actual condition of the repentance, faith, and submission to Him of every person, none can fool Him or bluff their way through. Therefore, in His Church, only those will remain and be useful who satisfy the standards and criteria of the Lord; else, sooner or later, or eventually at the time of the separation that will be done at the end of world, everyone not truly Born-Again, will be cast out of the Church into eternal destruction. Therefore, for all of us, this is a time and opportunity to examine ourselves about our being a part of the Lord’s Church, and carry out whatever rectifications that are required to ensure we actually are a part of His Church. Ignoring or postponing this decision can have disastrous eternal consequences (Hebrews 3:7-19).

What is the purpose of the Lord in building His Church, in so minutely examining us before joining us to His Church? To understand this, we need to go back to the first sin committed in the Garden of Eden, when Adam and Eve, beguiled by Satan, disobeyed God, which opened the way for sin to enter into creation and its harmful effects spread into and spoilt the whole of creation (Romans 8:19-22). Before this sad and painful event, man had an open, unbroken fellowship with God, which was broken by sin. Since then, God is engaged in the process of restoring back this fellowship with man, to remove the seeds of sin sown by Satan in the lives of men, and to give back to man the place and position He had given to him at the time of his creation (Genesis 1:28), and gather man to be with Him in that fully restored status. That is why He is so minutely managing and carrying out this whole process, all by Himself, so that nothing of Satan has any chance of remaining behind to once again ruin things. We can better understand this purpose and the Lord’s way of working, through considering the various figures of speech used in the New Testament for the Church of Lord Jesus; and we will start doing this from the next article.

If you have any doubts whatsoever, then please get them clarified and settled now; please do not ignore, delay, or postpone doing so.

If you have not yet accepted the discipleship of the Lord Jesus, then take a decision in its favor now to secure your eternal life and heavenly blessings. The Lord's security and blessings are present where there is obedience of the Lord, where His Word is honored and followed. If you are still not Born Again, have not obtained salvation, or have not asked the Lord Jesus for forgiveness for your sins, then you have the time and opportunity to do so right now. Ask the Lord Jesus to forgive your sins, and voluntarily and sincerely surrender yourselves into His hands - this is the only way to salvation and heavenly life. All you have to do is say a short prayer, voluntarily and with a sincere heart, with heartfelt repentance for your sins, and a fully submissive attitude. You can do this in this manner, “Lord Jesus, I confess that I have disobeyed You, and have knowingly or unknowingly, in mind, in thought, in attitude, and in deeds, committed sins. I believe that you have fully borne the punishment of my sins by your sacrifice on the cross, and have paid the full price of those sins for all eternity. Please forgive my sins, change my heart and mind towards you, and make me your disciple, take me with you." God longs for your company and wants to see you blessed, but to make this possible, is your personal decision. One prayer said with a sincere and surrendered heart will turn your present and future, your life here on earth and in the next world, forever and make you heavenly and blessed. Will you not say this prayer now, while you have the time and opportunity to do so? The decision is yours.
