Building the Church – 16 – On The Lord Jesus Christ – 8

As a steward of God’s Church and of fellowshipping with God’s other children, every Born-Again Christian Believer must learn about them, to worthily fulfil his stewardship. The Believers should also bear in mind that just as they have been added to the Church and fellowship by being saved and Born-Again, similarly, others are also being added by the Lord to His Church. Also, just as he as a newly Born-Again Believer takes time to grow and mature spiritually, similarly, the others who are being joined also need time to grow and mature. In other words, the Lord’s Church is still “under-construction;” and therefore is incomplete and imperfect. So, no one should expect impeccable perfection and pure spirituality in the Church, till this process of being added and perfected has been completed.

An excellent example of this process is the first temple built by Solomon for the worship of the Lord. It has been written about the construction process of this Temple that “And the temple, when it was being built, was built with stone finished at the quarry, so that no hammer or chisel or any iron tool was heard in the temple while it was being built” (1 Kings 6:7). Take note of the things said in this verse. The stones that were used for the building of this temple, after being taken out of the quarry, and before being put in their place in the temple, were worked upon in a place where they were cut, trimmed, polished and given the size, shape, and appearance required for their place in the temple. Once they were ready for being placed in the temple at their proper appointed place, then they were brought and fitted into their place. Every stone had its assigned place, and according to that place, it was cut, trimmed, prepared, and made ready. No other stone could take its place, nor could the stone take the place of any other stone; nor did the stone decide in which place it would like to be placed and fitted in. According to the plan and design of the master-builder, every stone was placed in its pre-determined location.

There was another very astounding and wonderful thing that was happening, and is mentioned here; each prepared and ready stone was just brought and fit into its place, there was no need to trim and finely cut or prepare it again to take its place and settle in with the other stones at that location. It is written that in the temple there was no sound heard of any instruments being used. Similarly, the Lord too, in this world, from where He has taken us, is, through our situations, experiences, and circumstances in this world itself, is cutting, trimming, molding, and polishing us, which undoubtedly is a painful process, preparing us to take our pre-determined place in the Church. He does this work in His secured place, in His Church - the world-wide group of the called out ones, where we are constantly under His observation and are being worked upon, under His supervision by His appointed ministers. When we are finally ready and prepared for our pre-determined place, the Lord takes and places us there. In this manner, this temple, this Church is still under construction, he is still building it.

Think it over, in the quarry, from where the stones were cut, there must have been various stones of different sizes and shapes; but every stone was not appropriate for being used in the temple. Only those stones that were appropriate for being used in the temple, were then first taken to be cut, trimmed, polished, and prepared to place in the temple, and then placed at their appropriate place in the Temple. The Lord too uses only those people to build His Church, who are actually worthy of His Church, i.e., those who have sincerely accepted Him as the Messiah, the “one and only savior of the world” have come into faith in Him, and have lived a life of obedience to Him and His Word. Anyone else, who has joined himself to the Lord’s Church through any other means, on any other basis or criteria, will be rejected, sent out into eternal destruction.

Pay heed to the parable of Matthew 13:24-30; the tares too received the care of the landlord, they too got the manure, water, protection from birds and animals, etc., but none of this made them accepted by the landlord. They had been identified and kept for destruction from the beginning, and that is where they were eventually sent. Similarly, in the Church of the Lord, all those who are not according to the standards and criteria of the Lord, those who have been infiltrated into the Church by Satan and men, they may consider themselves safe and secure for now, may think that they have been accepted by the Lord, but eventually at the end, they will be cast out and sent to destruction. They will never be a part of the heavenly temple, the Church of God.

If you are a Christian Believer, then examine yourself and make sure that you actually are a saved and Born-Again Believer, as per the criteria and the standards of the Lord Jesus, and have come into the Church not through any other mechanism or way, but by the one and only way of repentance and forgiveness of sins from the Lord, as given by the Lord. The tares growing in that field did not have the power or ability to change their eternal destiny; but you have the opportunity and the ability to receive the Lord’s forgiveness and come to faith in Him, join Him in His prescribed manner. Do a proper evaluation now, and rectify that which needs to be rectified, while you still can do it. Do it now, lest somehow if you do not have the opportunity, time, or ability to do it later, you may not have to cut a sorry figure and face eternal destruction. Secondly, after you become a part of the Church of the Lord Jesus, He will cut, trim, mold, and polish you to prepare you for your assigned place in the Church. This process is painful for sure; but is necessary, and by it many vain and redundant things in our lives are taken away, things that impede our spiritual growth and maturity. Do not think this to be something unexpected or inappropriate (Acts 14:22; 2 Timothy 3:12; Hebrews 12:5-12; 1 Peter 4:1-2, 12-19); this is an integral and essential part of the process to build us up for our place in the Church.

If you have not yet accepted the discipleship of the Lord, make your decision in favor of the Lord Jesus now to ensure your eternal life and heavenly blessings. Where there is obedience to the Lord, where there is respect and obedience to His Word, there is also the blessing and protection of the Lord. Repenting of your sins, and asking the Lord Jesus for forgiveness of your sins, voluntarily and sincerely, surrendering yourself to Him - is the only way to salvation and heavenly life. You only have to say a short but sincere prayer to the Lord Jesus Christ willingly and with a penitent heart, and at the same time completely commit and submit your life to Him. You can also make this prayer and submission in words something like, “Lord Jesus, I am sorry for my sins and repent of them. I thank you for taking my sins upon yourself, paying for them through your life.  Because of them you died on the cross in my place, were buried, and you rose again from the grave on the third day for my salvation, and today you are the living Lord God and have freely provided to me the forgiveness, and redemption from my sins, through faith in you. Please forgive my sins, take me under your care, and make me your disciple. I submit my life into your hands." Your one prayer from a sincere and committed heart will make your present and future life, in this world and in the hereafter, heavenly and blessed for eternity.

Building the Church – 13 – On The Lord Jesus Christ – 5

Unless a Believer knows what has been given to him by God, and why, he will be unable to fulfil the purpose of God for granting that thing to him. Since God has made everyone of His children, i.e., the Born-Again Christian Believers, a member of His Church and placed them in fellowship with His other children, therefore, they ought to learn and know about these responsibilities, to be God’s worthy stewards in utilizing these privileges. In this current series, we are learning about the Church of God and about fellowshipping with His children, not according to any denominational or man-made teachings, but directly from the Word of God the Bible, using Matthew 16:18 as the lead verse, where the word “Church” has been used for the first time in the Bible. Presently, we are learning about the Lord Jesus saying in this verse that He will build His Church. In the previous article we had learnt three things, on the basis of which we will learn about Lord Jesus making this statement.

The first thing was that the Lord Himself is building His Church. He has not left this work in the hands of anyone else, let alone His disciples on earth, not even in the hands of the angels of God. This by itself shows the great importance the Lord places upon His Church and building it, and how it needs to be done very carefully and with utmost precision. Consider some things written in the Bible about the beginning of the Church and its initial growth:

  • “Then those who gladly received his word were baptized; and that day about three thousand souls were added to them. And they continued steadfastly in the apostles' doctrine and fellowship, in the breaking of bread, and in prayers” (Acts 2:41-42). Convicted by Peter’s preaching and call to repentance (Acts 2:38), of those ‘devout Jews’ (Acts 2:5), that were gathered in Jerusalem to fulfil the Law, about three thousand believed on the Word of God, got baptized, and joined ‘them’, i.e., the disciples chosen by the Lord Jesus. Also, there came a fundamental change in their lives, in their perspective about the Lord Jesus, and in the priorities in their lives. Now ‘they continued steadfastly in the apostles' doctrine and fellowship, in the breaking of bread, and in prayers’ - this was the beginning of the Church, and of the separation of the true committed Christian Believers from the world into their new identity by which they will be recognized. It is also the change that occurs in the hearts and lives of all the truly Born-Again Believers in the Lord.

  • “praising God and having favour with all the people. And the Lord added to the church daily those who were being saved” (Acts 2:47). As written in this verse, after the above event, whoever would be saved, they would be joined into the Church of the Lord Jesus, not by any of the Lord’s disciples, nor by any apostle, not even by any of those initial 3000 converts, but by the Lord Jesus Himself! No man, whoever he may be, can join anyone to the Lord’s Church; this is done only by the Lord Himself, based on Lord’s criteria and evaluation; and the person has to be one who has been saved, not by fulfilling any denominational or man made criteria and standards, but only to the satisfaction of the Lord Jesus.

  • “And through the hands of the apostles many signs and wonders were done among the people. And they were all with one accord in Solomon's Porch. Yet none of the rest dared join them, but the people esteemed them highly. And believers were increasingly added to the Lord, multitudes of both men and women” (Acts 5:12-14). From the beginning of the Church, many signs and wonders were done by the disciples and apostles of the Lord; the people esteemed them highly; still, no one on their own had the courage to join them. Although the disciples and apostles of the Lord were filled with the Holy Spirit, could very powerfully and effectively preach the gospel of repentance and salvation and teach God’s Word, could work and show signs and wonders, yet they could not join the interested people into the Church. It was only the Lord Jesus Himself who joined the people into His Church. The first Church was the “Church of the Lord Jesus Christ,” not of any apostle or person, nor belonging to any place or organization; that is how it is now and will always be.

And when the work of the Lord started to grow, then as the Lord had taught in His parable of the wheat and the tares (Matthew 13:24-30, 37-43), Satan too started to mix his people into the Church. Although not the disciples, but the Lord knew and recognized them; but still, till even now, he has not permitted even His angels to uproot and remove the people of Satan, but has left this removal and segregation for the end, lest the actual people of the Lord suffer any loss (Matthew 13:28-30) - the Lord does not permit even His angels to meddle with His Church. But from time to time, the Lord keeps warning His people, exposing and weeding out the people of Satan (Acts 20:29-31; 2 Timothy 4:10, 14; 1 John 2:18-19; 4:1-6; 3 John 1:9-10). Only the people of the Lord will be allowed to remain in the Church of the Lord; the Lord will not permit anyone else to stay; and it is the Lord who is carrying on with the work of examining, testing, identifying, and segregating the true from the false Believers. He does not allow anyone else to do this, lest even one of His people come to any harm.

If you are a Christian Believer, then examine and evaluate yourself, ascertain on what basis you consider yourself to be a Christian Believer, and how, by whom or what process, have you been joined to the Church? The Church that you are joined with, is it actually the Church of the Lord Jesus, or is it of some person, or of an organization, or of a sect or denomination? What are the rules, regulations and laws being followed and implemented in that Church; are they man-made, or of the Bible? Two criteria that we have seen here, of carrying out this evaluation and examination are, firstly the fundamental change in the lives and priorities, and the commitment to the Lord that comes in the life of the Believers, if they are truly Born Again. The second is that those who are truly joined to the Lord, also “continue steadfastly” in the four things of Acts 2:42, into which those initial converts had immediately committed themselves. Are those four things the top priority of your life, and do you steadfastly continue in them as those Believers did?

Building the Church – 1 – On Peter? – 1

To worthily fulfil his responsibility of being a steward of God given things and privileges, every Born-Again Christian Believer must learn about the things and privileges, given to him by God along with salvation. In this context, presently, we are learning about the Believer being a steward of the Church of God and his fellowship of God’s other children. To learn and understand about the Church, in the previous articles, we have considered seven metaphors used in the Bible for the Church, and learnt lessons from them. One common thought and lesson throughout these seven metaphors has been that the Lord’s Church is one, eternal, universal, worldwide Church of God. This Church is the body and bride of Christ, and therefore, like the Lord, it remains unaffected,, unchanging, undivided by time, place, persons, or culture. This one and only true Church is from the Lord, by the Lord, and for the Lord. It never has in any way been from man, by man, for man. Rather, any aspect where human interference and intervention has superseded what God has given, then that has rendered it man’s church, not Lord’s; a corrupted and deformed Church.

From today we will start learning about the Lord Jesus’s building His Church. Since this is a very important topic, and it can be a very sensitive one for some, therefore, today we will revise our basis for interpreting and explaining Biblical things. This, so that it remains clear that throughout this topic, everything will be from the Bible, and will be interpreted according to the proper way to interpret the things of the Bible.

There is a very common misunderstanding amongst the Christians, that the Lord Jesus has said that He will build His Church on Peter. The basis for this misunderstanding is Matthew 16:18, “And I also say to you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build My church, and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it.” This is because of misinterpreting this verse.

The most common reason for misinterpreting and misunderstanding something from the Bible is taking some word, or phrase, or sentence, or passage of the Bible out of its context and giving it meanings that do not stand up to scrutiny when that word, or phrase, or sentence, or passage of the Bible is seen in its actual context. Therefore, to properly understand Biblical things, not only should they be taken and understood in their immediate context, but also be considered in light of what has been said in the Bible at other places about the same thing. Every interpretation should satisfy, be consistent with everything said in the Bible about it; there should be no contradictions - none whatsoever, in the immediate and the related portions. Another fact that should always be borne in mind while interpreting and understanding is that in their original form and writing, the books of the Bible were not written in chapters and verses, as we presently have them in our Bibles. They were written as just another text, poetry, letter is generally written. This current division into chapters and verses came about much later, as an aid, to cite, quote, and memorize Scripture portions. Therefore, this division is artificial, and at many places it cuts off the running thought of a sentence or passage in between, before its completion. Hence, for a correct interpretation, while looking at the context, it is always helpful to mentally remove the division of the text into verses and chapters, and consider the whole thought as one unit. If our interpretation and understanding is not consistent with either the immediate context, or with other related passages and portions, then that interpretation and understanding is wrong, and needs to be rectified.

The whole of the Bible is the Word of God; the whole Bible has been written under the inspiration of God the Holy Spirit, i.e., the original and actual author is the Holy Spirit, even though the persons using the pen for writing the words may be different. It is this Word that was there at the beginning, was with God, was God, and became flesh to dwell amongst us (John 1:1-2, 14). So, there can never be any error or mutual contradiction in the things of the Bible, else it implies imperfections and contradictions in God Himself. Therefore, every explanation and interpretation that is not consistent with the immediate context and the related things in the Bible is false, unacceptable, cannot be agreed with, and used in any manner. These facts also serve as a guide for us to examine this notion that did the Lord Jesus really say that He will build His Church on Peter? We will see how on proper examination and with a correct understanding, it becomes clear that the Lord Jesus never said anything like this, nor did He give any such assurance; this is a completely wrong notion, is totally unjustified, and absolutely unacceptable.

From the next article we will examine this notion about the Church being built on Peter through three questions:

  • Was the Lord’s statement in Matthew 16:18 about building His Church, about Peter?

  • Does the Scripture at any other place confirm, support, or reiterate this notion of the Church being built on Peter, or Peter being its foundation?

  • Was Peter even worthy of this honor, of being considered to be the foundation for the Church, or not?

The Church, or, Assembly of Christ Jesus - 16

English Translation

Lord Jesus's Church; "God's Temple"

We see in Ephesians 2:21-22 that the Lord's Church has been called the Temple of God, His dwelling place. In the previous article, we had begun to consider the third thing stated by the Lord Jesus in Matthew 16:18 regarding the building of His Church. We had seen that it is the Lord who Himself is building the Church. Since the Church is still "Under Construction" therefore we see deficiencies, incompleteness, i.e., errors and spiritual immaturity etc., in its constituent members. Today we will see this through the example of the construction of God's Temple by King Solomon.

The stones that were used for the building of this temple, after being taken out of the quarry and before being put in their place in the temple, were taken to a place where they were cut, trimmed, polished and given the size, shape, and appearance required for their place in the temple. Once they were ready for being placed in the temple at their proper place, then they were brought and fitted into their place. Every stone had its assigned place, and according to that place, it was cut, trimmed, prepared, and made ready. No other stone could take its place, nor could the stone take the place of any other stone; nor did the stone decide in which place it would like to be placed and fit in. According to the plan and design of the master-builder, every stone was placed in its pre-determined location. There was another very astounding and wonderful thing that was happening, mentioned here; each prepared and ready stone was just brought and fit into place, there was no need to trim and finely cut or prepare it again to take its place and settle in with the other stones at that location. It is written that in the temple there was no sound heard of any instruments being used. Similarly, the Lord too, in this world, through our situations, experiences and circumstances is cutting, trimming, molding, and polishing us, preparing us to take our pre-determined place in the Church. He does this work in His secured place, in His Church on earth, where we are constantly under His observation and are being worked upon, under His supervision by His appointed ministers.

Only those stones that were appropriate for being used in the temple, were then taken to be cut, trimmed, polished, and prepared to place in the temple. The Lord too uses only those people to build His Church, who are actually worthy of His Church, i.e., those who have actually accepted Him as the Messiah, the “one and only savior of the world” have come into faith in Him, and have lived a life of obedience to Him and His Word. Anyone else, who has joined himself to the Lord’s Church through any other means, on any other basis or criteria, will be rejected, sent out into eternal destruction. Pay heed to the parable of Matthew 13:24-30; the tares received the care of the landlord, they too got the manure, water, protection from birds and animals, etc., but none of this made them accepted by the landlord. They had been identified and kept for destruction from the beginning, and that is where they were eventually sent. Similarly, in the Church of the Lord, all those who are not according to the standards and criteria of the Lord, they may consider themselves safe and secure for now, may think that they are accepted by the Lord, but eventually at the end, they will be cast out and sent to destruction.

In the earlier article, we had seen the parable stated by the Lord, about the tares; those tares growing in that field did not have the power or ability to change their eternal destiny; but you have the opportunity and the ability to receive the Lord’s forgiveness and come to faith in Him, join Him in His prescribed manner. This process is painful for sure; but is necessary, and by it many vain and redundant things in our lives, things that impede our spiritual growth and maturity, are taken away. Do not think this to be something unexpected or inappropriate (Acts 14:22; 2 Timothy 3:12; Hebrews 12:5-12; 1 Peter 4:1-2, 12-19); this is an integral and essential part of the process to build us up for our place in the Church.

If you have not yet accepted the discipleship of the Lord Jesus, then take a decision in its favor now to secure your eternal life and heavenly blessings. The Lord's security and blessings are present where there is obedience of the Lord, where His Word is honored and followed. If you are still not Born Again, have not obtained salvation, or have not asked the Lord Jesus for forgiveness for your sins, then you have the time and opportunity to do so right now. Ask the Lord Jesus to forgive your sins, and voluntarily and sincerely surrender yourselves into His hands - this is the only way to salvation and heavenly life. All you have to do is say a short prayer, voluntarily and with a sincere heart, with heartfelt repentance for your sins, and a fully submissive attitude. You can do this in this manner, “Lord Jesus, I confess that I have disobeyed You, and have knowingly or unknowingly, in mind, in thought, in attitude, and in deeds, committed sins. I believe that you have fully borne the punishment of my sins by your sacrifice on the cross, and have paid the full price of those sins for all eternity. Please forgive my sins, change my heart and mind towards you, and make me your disciple, take me with you." God longs for your company and wants to see you blessed, but to make this possible, is your personal decision. One prayer said with a sincere and surrendered heart will turn your present and future, your life here on earth and in the next world, forever and make you heavenly and blessed. Will you not say this prayer now, while you have the time and opportunity to do so? The decision is yours.
