Being Good – Part 1

There is one thing in common between the mutual interactions and relationships of human beings with each other, and, in the behavior and relationships of humans towards God - in both of them being good, being considered good, receiving good, etc. have a very prominent role. All human beings expect good behavior and goodness from others, even though they themselves may not behave in the same manner towards others. Similarly, they always want that their deity should always be good towards them, and only do what is good for them. To this end, they live under the assumption that by being good, even if it is for a short while – at the moment they need divine help, if they are good, and do good, then they will be considered acceptable by God. Their notion is based on the belief that by doing good works, and by accepting and doing spiritual or pious things, they will become good, which will then make them acceptable to God, because of which their deity will then act in their favor, and will do things for them according to their wish and desires.

For anything to be good or bad, right or wrong, appropriate or inappropriate, acceptable or unacceptable, etc., there is a need for an established, universally consented, and legally accepted standard, i.e., a valid basis, with which that matter can be contrasted, and it’s actual status can be evaluated as per that standard. Because even if a thing is considered good, correct, and acceptable from one's personal point of view; unless it is good, correct, and acceptable on being evaluated according to that established, universally accepted, and valid standard, it will not be considered as acceptable.

For worldly and physical things, the place where a person lives, generally the constitution or norms of that country or place, defines and decides the standards of considering whether things are valid and acceptable, or not. The manner in which that constitution is actually used or misused by people is a separate matter - even if it is misused, the fault is not of the constitution, but of its interpretation and the way it is applied or implemented. There is an important thing to keep in mind over here, the evaluation of being good and acceptable cannot be done according to our own criteria and standards, rather, it has to be done according to the criteria and standards that are according to the person in whose eyes we are trying to be good and acceptable, only then will the standard and evaluation result be considered valid and acceptable.

For us Christians, this "constitution" for judging spiritual matters, which declares what is valid/legal and acceptable, or inappropriate and unacceptable, is the Word of God, i.e., the Bible, and its laws. Because the worldly and spiritual things are assessed to be good or bad by differing standards, the Lord Jesus Christ said “… Render therefore to Caesar the things that are Caesar's, and to God the things that are God's" (Matthew 22:21; see 22:15-21). In other words, assess and do the things of the world, on the basis of the standards used for assessing the things of the world, and in the manner they are seen and accepted by the authorities of the world; and on the basis of the criteria or standards given by God, assess and fulfill the things related to Him. The things pertaining to God cannot be evaluated, judged, and accepted by worldly standards; Nor can worldliness be evaluated and lived out by the standards of God. He who wants to walk with the world, must adopt worldly standards; and one who wants to walk and live with God must adopt the standards of God.

In the Christian faith, only that which is according to the Word of God, is accepted, and considered good according to the Word of God, only that is good and acceptable to God. All else, that according to God's Word is not right, is not acceptable, it is not good either—whatever people may think, believe, and assess it as. So, for us Christians, it is only the Bible that determines what is "good works," and what is not; What is acceptable to God and what is not acceptable, and who is a good man from God's point of view, and who is not.

It is a natural thing that only those who really are good from within, can also do something actually good. The Lord Jesus Christ said, "For a good tree does not bear bad fruit, nor does a bad tree bear good fruit. For every tree is known by its own fruit. For men do not gather figs from thorns, nor do they gather grapes from a bramble bush. A good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings forth good; and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart brings forth evil. For out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks” (Luke 6:43-45). In other word, a man's life, his behavior, his "fruits" prove his reality; one who does good according to God's standards, is also good in His eyes.

So now the question arises that on the basis of the Word of God who is the man that does good and is therefore acceptable to God because of his goodness? What are this person’s qualities? In the next article, we'll look at this question from God's Word - about man being good and being able to do good. But for now, the main thing is that the only person acceptable to God, the one who can be in fellowship with him, is the one who has repented of his sins and asked the Lord Jesus for their forgiveness, and whose sins are forgiven; One who voluntarily, with a sincere and submissive heart has become a follower or disciple of the Lord Jesus Christ.

If you have not yet accepted the discipleship of the Lord, make your decision in favor of the Lord Jesus now to ensure your eternal life and heavenly blessings. Where there is obedience to the Lord, where there is respect and obedience to His Word, there is also the blessing and protection of the Lord. Repenting of your sins, and asking the Lord Jesus for forgiveness of your sins, voluntarily and sincerely, surrendering yourself to Him - is the only way to salvation and heavenly life. You only have to say a short but sincere prayer to the Lord Jesus Christ willingly and with a penitent heart, and at the same time completely commit and submit your life to Him. You can also make this prayer and submission in words something like, “Lord Jesus, I am sorry for my sins and repent of them. I thank you for taking my sins upon yourself, paying for them through your life.  Because of them you died on the cross in my place, were buried, and you rose again from the grave on the third day for my salvation, and today you are the living Lord God and have freely provided to me the forgiveness, and redemption from my sins, through faith in you. Please forgive my sins, take me under your care, and make me your disciple. I submit my life into your hands." Your one prayer from a sincere and committed heart will make your present and future life, in this world and in the hereafter, heavenly and blessed for eternity.

The Holy Communion – 115

English Translation

For Edification (1)

To listen to a discussion based on today's article click here: Discussion Audio

We have studied about the Holy Communion or the Lord’s Table from its antecedent, the Passover, from the Old Testament. Then we studied about it from the New Testament accounts; from the Gospels, the Lord Jesus’s establishing it. Followed by studying about the misunderstandings and misuse of the Table, and the correct manner of participating in it from 1 Corinthians 11:17-34, and some other issues related to participation in the Holy Communion from 1 Corinthians 10:16-22. In the last few articles we have seen the conclusion from 1 Corinthians 10:22. In this article, on this study about the Holy Communion, we will see one more point that the Holy Spirit raises through Paul, stated in 1 Corinthians 10:23-24.

Although this point has been given in context of the Lord’s Table, but it is also equally applicable to many other issues related to Christian Faith and living. Knowing about it will help the Christian Believers in many perplexing situations that they will face in their journey of faith; so they should remain aware of it, and use it. It is written in 1 Corinthians 10:23, “All things are lawful for me, but not all things are helpful; all things are lawful for me, but not all things edify.” As is evident from the text of the verse, there will often be situations where one can be technically and legally correct, but still be morally and ethically wrong or unacceptable to the Lord. To understand this point, we need to remember that God does not look at the externals, but at the heart (1 Samuel 16:7; Jeremiah 11:20; 20:12), and judges a person according to what is in his heart. Therefore, David cautioned his son Solomon, as he was handing over the charge to him, “As for you, my son Solomon, know the God of your father, and serve Him with a loyal heart and with a willing mind; for the Lord searches all hearts and understands all the intent of the thoughts. If you seek Him, He will be found by you; but if you forsake Him, He will cast you off forever” (1 Chronicles 28:9). So, while a person may be technically and legally right, he can be morally and ethically totally wrong.

A very good illustration of this is David’s plotting with Joab, the death of Uriah, the husband of Bathsheba, since she was pregnant with his child (2 Samuel 11:14-17). Technically and legally, as the King and Commander-in-Chief of his troops, David had the right to station any soldier anywhere, and Joab too had to comply with the king’s orders. But the actual situation and the thing in David’s heart was to have Uriah eliminated, to hide his own sin from Uriah and the people. Joab agreed to carry out David’s wicked plan, and thus became a party to David’s sin. Later when God confronts David through His prophet Nathan, on God’s behalf, Nathan calls what David had done as murdering Uriah (2 Samuel 12:7-12). David could not hide behind the veneer he had created, and could not absolve himself from the consequences of his sins, though he was well within his rights as King. God judged him only by what was in his heart and not by what he presented on the outside.

The verses we are considering, 1 Corinthians 10:23-24, teach us that our primary concern should be to assess every situation and our response to it on the criteria of edification. Whatever we think of doing, does it edify us, and also the Church, or not? If it does not edify, then even if it is technically and legally correct and acceptable by the standards of the world, nevertheless, it is unacceptable for a Christian Believer. Paul affirms it in these words, “Let no one seek his own, but each one the other's well-being” (1 Corinthians 10:24). Paul explains this thought in some more detail in Philippians 2:1-11, using the Lord Jesus as the role model and example. Those who participate in the Lord’s Table, when examining themselves to partake in a worthy manner, should make sure that their lives have served to edify the Church, and they themselves are edified as well. In the next article we will look into some more detail about this edification.

If you are a Christian Believer and have been participating in the Lord’s Table, then please examine your life and make sure that you are actually a disciple of the Lord, i.e., are redeemed from your sins, have submitted and surrendered your life to the Lord Jesus to live in obedience to Him and His Word. You should also always, like the Berean Believers, first check and test all teachings that you receive from the Word of God, and only after ascertaining the truth and veracity of the teachings brought to you by men, should you accept and obey them (Acts 17:11; 1 Thessalonians 5:21). If you do not do this, the false apostles and prophets sent by Satan as ministers of Christ (2 Corinthians 11:13-15), will by their trickery, cunningness, and craftiness render you ineffective for the Lord and cause severe damage to your Christian life and your rewards.

If you have not yet accepted the discipleship of the Lord Jesus, then to ensure your eternal life and heavenly rewards, take a decision in favor of the Lord Jesus now. Wherever there is surrender and obedience towards the Lord Jesus, the Lord’s blessings and safety are also there. If you are still not Born Again, have not obtained salvation, or have not asked the Lord Jesus for forgiveness for your sins, then you have the opportunity to do so right now. A short prayer said voluntarily with a sincere heart, with heartfelt repentance for your sins, and a fully submissive attitude, “Lord Jesus, I confess that I have disobeyed You, and have knowingly or unknowingly, in mind, in thought, in attitude, and in deeds, committed sins. I believe that you have fully borne the punishment of my sins by your sacrifice on the cross, and have paid the full price of those sins for all eternity. Please forgive my sins, change my heart and mind towards you, and make me your disciple, take me with you." God longs for your company and wants to see you blessed, but to make this possible, is your personal decision. Will you not say this prayer now, while you have the time and opportunity to do so – the decision is yours.

The Holy Communion – 69

English Translation

The Lord’s Table - Participating Unworthily

We have seen in the previous articles, from 1 Corinthians 11:25-26, that the Lord Jesus commanded partaking the Holy Communion for His disciples in remembrance of Him, called the bread and the cup symbols of His body broken for them and blood shed for them. The Holy Spirit, here, through Paul also brings out another fact to this remembrance of the Lord; inherent in participating in the Lord’s Table is the fact that the participant also proclaims the death of the Lord, till He comes. In other words, the participant knows, accepts, and affirms that he is to witness the Lord’s death and resurrection, it is his God given responsibility, and he will give an account of this to the Lord when he stands before Him. We have seen about this aspect of the Lord’s Table in the previous article.

After reminding his readers about these things, in 1 Corinthians 11:27, Paul under the guidance of the Holy Spirit presents a very serious aspect of the Lord’s Table; one that is hardly ever emphasized, or taught, in most Churches, especially where people participate in the Holy Communion as a recurring ritual, and feel satisfied that having done so now they are right with God, for now they have fulfilled their denominational requirement. In this verse Paul puts before the errant Church the fact of doing wrong about participating in the Holy Communion and therefore being accountable for it, to the Lord Jesus. Note that Paul does not state this as a possibility, but as an established fact; neither does he say that it will be only for certain people, e.g., those who do keep doing it over and over again, or those in whose lives certain other things besides this error are also seen. Paul says “whoever”, i.e., anyone, at any time, whether once or repetitively, participates in an unworthy manner, without any exception, becomes guilty of the body and blood of the Lord Jesus. The participants in the Holy Communion may have done it according to the teachings or practices of their denomination, sect, or group; but if they have done it in an “unworthy manner” according to the Word of God, despite being ritually and denominationally correct, they are guilty of the body and blood of the Lord Jesus. This places before us the necessity of understanding what the phrase “unworthy manner” means and denotes.

Note that here, verse 27 begins with “Therefore”, making it conditional that what follows, is a consequence or result of what has been stated before it. Before the statement of verse 27, in verses 25 and 26, the Holy Spirit through Paul has emphasized two things - first, the partaking in the Lord’s Table has to be done, for nothing else but in remembrance of the Lord, as the Lord Himself had said; and secondly, the partaking by itself mandatorily places upon the partaker the responsibility of proclaiming the Lord’s death till He comes, i.e., of witnessing for the Lord. The word translated as “unworthy manner” or “unworthily”, in the original Greek language is “anaxios”, which literally means to weigh or value something differently from what it actually is, i.e., ascribe a different value or meaning to the thing, than the actual value or meaning. So, we can see from this that participating in the Holy Communion in any manner, or with any purpose or intention, other than originally given or ascribed to it by the Lord Jesus, is participating in an unworthy manner, or unworthily.

From verses 25-26 we see that the focus of the Lord’s Table is not any man, but the Lord Jesus Himself. Participation has to be in His remembrance, to remember the purpose of His body being broken and blood being shed, and to proclaim the Lord’s death. There is no mention or scope of anything else, particularly anything related to any other person, for whatever else. In context of the “Therefore” at the beginning of the verse, anyone participating in it for any purpose other than remembering the Lord and proclaiming the death of the Lord, i.e., affirming being the Lord’s committed and faithful witness, till He comes, is participating unworthily. Those who participate in it with focus not on the Lord but on themselves, thinking it will make them righteous, or acceptable to God, or worthy of entering heaven, or pleasing in the eyes of their religious elders and leaders, etc. are concocting and ascribing their own contrived meanings to the Holy Communion; meanings not given to it by the Lord Jesus, and are guilty of the body and blood of the Lord. Those who have been reading these articles and following their contents, can recall that it has been said many times in these articles that contrary to the popular thinking and belief, particularly amongst the denominational Churches, the Lord’s Table is not meant to make the participants righteous, or acceptable to God, or worthy of entering heaven. This should now make it clear to them, why this has repeatedly been emphasized, and why any such denominational teaching is unBiblical, wrong, and to be discarded out-rightly.

In the next article we will see about participating worthily, or in the correct manner.

Will you not say this prayer now, while you have the time and opportunity to do so - the decision is yours.

The Church, or, Assembly of Christ Jesus - 42

English Translation

Holy Communion - Purpose and Importance

In the previous articles we have seen some teachings and implications from the Lord's establishing His Table, the Holy Communion. We had seen how it symbolized the disciples becoming one family in the Lord. We had also seen how Judas Iscariot, who never became a part of the Lord's family despite all the time and opportunity given to him, was not made a participant in the Table. In the last article we had seen about some errors related to partaking in the Holy Communion that had come into the Church at Corinth, and some cautions that the participants need to observe for participating in the Lord's Table. Today we will see the purposes and importance of participating in the Holy Communion instituted by the Lord Jesus for His disciples.

It is only after understanding and learning about the rational, purpose, and importance of the “Breaking of Bread” can we realize and know why the Lord instituted this Table for His true and committed disciples, and asked them to regularly take part in it till He comes again - so that they may remain safe and secure from the wiles of the devil, remain pure and clean from the corruption Satan brings upon them (John 13:8b, 10a), and to keep His disciples committed to propagating the gospel and remain obedient to Him and His Word. With this understanding we can also see why Judas Iscariot was not made a partaker of the Holy Communion - since he did not fulfill the purposes of the Lord’s Table. This also shows us that those who partake in the Lord’s Table as a ritual, without understanding its importance and being committed to its purposes, why the power of this Table is not seen in their lives, and what terrible retribution they are bringing upon themselves. We all need to understand and be very clear in our minds that no one becomes righteous in God’s eyes by participating in the “Breaking of Bread”; rather, the Lord established this Table for those to partake, who already are righteous and holy in His sight, and not to make the unrighteous into righteous people. On the other hand, a person’s partaking in an unworthy manner, or getting someone else to partake in an unworthy manner makes him liable for Lord’s judgement and retribution. Participating worthily is a source of blessings, since the Christian Believer examines and corrects himself and grows in his Christian life and nearness to the Lord; whereas by participating unworthily or as a mere ritual, a person invites the Lord’s punishment upon himself.

Since, before participating in the Holy Communion, a person has to examine himself, has to accept and acknowledge his wrongs and mistakes before the Lord, therefore, the participation too must be within an appropriate time-period, so that the doings of the past days can be easily recalled and evaluated. The members of the initial Church “continued steadfastly” in it, gathering from house to house, and breaking bread daily (Acts 2:46). But after some time, this gathering together and Breaking of Bread, got joined with gathering together on the first day of the week for worship (1 Corinthians 16:2; Acts 20:7). This time period of one week is a convenient period to recall and recollect what a person may have done or said, and then bring before the Lord wherever he may have erred or fallen short. There is no support or affirmation in God’s Word of the practice of participating in the Lord’s Table once a month, or according to any other time period. We have also already seen that participating in it is not a ritual or a formality that has to be carried out.

If you are a Christian Believer, then what is your understanding and perspective about partaking in the Breaking of Bread instituted by the Lord. Take careful note that in 1 Corinthians 11:17-32, the Lord and the Holy Spirit have not made this participation a matter of choice, or according to one’s convenience; rather it has been made mandatory for the Christian Believers. It has been clearly stated in this passage that the members of the Church had to participate in the Breaking of Bread. But it has also been equally clearly stated that they had to do it in an appropriate manner, worthily. Not to partake of the Lord’s Table is disobeying the Lord, and therefore, renders a person accountable to the Lord for this disobedience; and, participating unworthily or in an inappropriate manner too invites the Lord’s retribution. In other words, the Lord has given a very narrow, but a very beneficial and blessed way for the Christian Believer, so that no one moves forward in life carrying the burden of past mistakes, wrongs, and unforgiven sins; rather having obtained Lord’s forgiveness, His people should move forwards with blessings and be edified in their Christian life.

If you have not yet accepted the discipleship of the Lord Jesus, then take a decision in its favor now to secure your eternal life and heavenly blessings. The Lord's security and blessings are present where there is obedience of the Lord, where His Word is honored and followed. If you are still not Born Again, have not obtained salvation, or have not asked the Lord Jesus for forgiveness for your sins, then you have the time and opportunity to do so right now. Ask the Lord Jesus to forgive your sins, and voluntarily and sincerely surrender yourselves into His hands - this is the only way to salvation and heavenly life. All you have to do is say a short prayer, voluntarily and with a sincere heart, with heartfelt repentance for your sins, and a fully submissive attitude. You can do this in this manner, “Lord Jesus, I confess that I have disobeyed You, and have knowingly or unknowingly, in mind, in thought, in attitude, and in deeds, committed sins. One prayer said with a sincere and surrendered heart will turn your present and future, your life here on earth and in the next world, forever and make you heavenly and blessed. Will you not say this prayer now, while you have the time and opportunity to do so? The decision is yours.
