व्यवस्था के औपचारिक निर्वाह के दुष्प्रभाव – 1

 

पिछले लेखों में हमने देखा है कि यद्यपि रीति-रिवाजों और परंपराओं का पालन करना, या पर्व मनाना, या भेंट-बलिदान चढ़ाना परमेश्वर द्वारा मूसा में होकर इस्राएलियों को दी गई उसकी व्यवस्था में दिया गया है, किन्तु इनका मात्र रीति के अनुसार, औपचारिक निर्वाह वास्तव में व्यवस्था का पालन करना नहीं है। जैसा प्रभु यीशु मसीह ने कहा है, व्यवस्था परमेश्वर और मनुष्यों के साथ परमेश्वर द्वारा दिए गए निर्देशों के अनुसार संबंधों को बनाना और निभाना है। परमेश्वर के साथ सही संबंध में होने और बने रहने का अर्थ उससे सारे मन, ध्यान, विचार, और धन से प्रेम करना तथा उसे पूर्णतः समर्पित रहना और उसकी आज्ञाकारिता में रहना है, और साथ ही औरों से भी अपने ही समान प्रेम करना है (मत्ती 22:37-40)। जब परमेश्वर के साथ सम्बन्ध ठीक होगा, तो यह मनुष्यों के साथ भी सही सम्बन्ध बनाने और निभाने में भी प्रकट होगा। यही व्यवस्था का पालन है। प्रकट है कि इसमें किसी प्रकार की औपचारिकता का कोई स्थान नहीं है। 

औपचारिकता केवल वहीं होती है जहाँ व्यवस्था को रीति-रिवाजों और परंपराओं का पालन करना, या पर्व मनाना, या भेंट-बलिदान चढ़ाना मान लिया जाता है, और फिर निर्धारित समय पर निर्धारित विधि के अनुसार ये बातें पूरी कर दी जाती हैं, चाहे व्यक्ति की उन में कैसी और कितनी भी आस्था या श्रद्धा हो, या न हो। साथ ही हमने यह भी देखा और समझा था कि चाहे पुराने नियम के लोग हों अथवा नए नियम के, जिन्होंने भी परमेश्वर के साथ सही सम्बन्ध बनाए, वे सभी उसे स्वीकार्य हुए, उन सभी ने जीवन में प्रवेश किया, जैसा परमेश्वर ने अपने वचन में विभिन्न स्थानों पर आश्वस्त किया है कि व्यवस्था के पालन के द्वारा लोगों को जीवन में प्रवेश मिलेगा।

 

लेकिन व्यवस्था को उसके सही स्वरूप, अर्थात परमेश्वर और मनुष्यों के साथ सही सम्बन्धों को बनाने और निभाने के लिए परमेश्वर के निर्देशों को मानने के स्थान पर, यदि व्यक्ति व्यवस्था को रीति-रिवाजों और परंपराओं का पालन करना, या निर्धारित पर्व मनाना, या स्थापित भेंट-बलिदान चढ़ाना आदि मानकर, और इनका भी सही मनसा रखते हुए निर्वाह नहीं करता है, तो यह उसके लिए बेचैनी और अशान्ति का कारण बन जाता है। हम इस बात को परमेश्वर के वचन बाइबल के नए नियम भाग में से तीन उदाहरणों से देखते हैं; इनमें से एक उदाहरण हम आज के लेख में देखेंगे, और शेष दो को अगले लेख में।

अनन्त जीवन में प्रवेश करने की लालसा रखने वाले एक धनी जवान अधिकारी से हुई प्रभु की बातचीत (मत्ती 19:16-22) से दो बातें स्पष्ट हैं; पहली बात तो यह कि वह अभी भी अपने जीवन में कुछ कमी अनुभव कर रहा था, यद्यपि वह व्यक्ति, अपनी दृष्टि और मानकों के अनुसार, बचपन से ही व्यवस्था का पालन करता आ रहा था। किन्तु प्रभु से किया गया उसका प्रश्न, और प्रभु के उत्तर को दिया गया उसका प्रत्युत्तर दिखाते हैं कि अपने अन्दर वह जानता था कि उसके द्वारा किए गए “व्यवस्था पालन” ने उसे परमेश्वर को स्वीकार्य नहीं बनाया है, वह अभी भी अनन्त जीवन से दूर है। दूसरी बात, प्रभु द्वारा उसे दिए गए निर्देशों से यह प्रकट है कि उसका “व्यवस्था पालन” अधूरा था, और सही मनसा से नहीं था। ध्यान कीजिए, मत्ती 19:18-19 में प्रभु यीशु जिन आज्ञाओं के पालन की बात करता है, वे दस आज्ञाओं का भाग तो हैं, किन्तु इनमें पहली चार आज्ञाओं का, जो मनुष्यों के परमेश्वर के साथ संबंध के बारे में हैं, कोई उल्लेख नहीं है। और न ही उस व्यक्ति ने प्रभु से यह कहा कि वह न केवल प्रभु द्वारा कही जा रही छः आज्ञाओं का पालन करता आया है, वरन उन पहली चार आज्ञाओं का भी पालन करता आया है, जिनका उल्लेख प्रभु ने नहीं किया है। संकेत प्रकट है कि उस व्यक्ति के जीवन में इन पहली चार आज्ञाओं का उचित पालन था ही नहीं।

 

फिर इस वार्तालाप के अंत की ओर जब प्रभु उससे अपनी सारी संपत्ति बेचकर कंगालों में वितरित करने और प्रभु के पीछे हो लेने को कहता है, तब वह व्यक्ति यह नहीं कर सका (मत्ती 19:21-22)। अर्थात, वह न तो परमेश्वर से अपने सारे तन-मन-धन से प्रेम करता था और न ही मनुष्यों से प्रेम करता था। मनुष्यों से सम्बन्धों को सिखाने वाली आज्ञाओं के पालन के बावजूद, उस व्यक्ति में मनुष्यों के प्रति सच्चा प्रेम नहीं था। लेकिन उसके जीवन में सांसारिक लाभ और संपत्ति का लालच अवश्य था। जो दिखाता है कि वह संपूर्ण व्यवस्था का, सच्चे मन से, सही मनसा के साथ, पालन नहीं कर रहा था। इसी से प्रकट हो जाता है कि उसका “बचपन से आज्ञाओं को मानते चले आने” का दावा कितना खोखला था, एक औपचारिकता से अधिक कुछ नहीं था। अगले लेख में हम शेष दो उदाहरणों के बारे में देखेंगे।

 

यदि आपने प्रभु की शिष्यता को अभी तक स्वीकार नहीं किया है, तो अपने अनन्त जीवन और स्वर्गीय आशीषों को सुनिश्चित करने के लिए अभी प्रभु यीशु के पक्ष में अपना निर्णय कर लीजिए। जहाँ प्रभु की आज्ञाकारिता है, उसके वचन की बातों का आदर और पालन है, वहाँ प्रभु की आशीष और सुरक्षा भी है। स्वेच्छा से अपने पापों के लिये पश्चाताप करके, प्रभु यीशु से अपने पापों के लिए क्षमा माँगकर, स्वेच्छा से तथा सच्चे मन से अपने आप को उसकी अधीनता में समर्पित कर दीजिए - उद्धार और स्वर्गीय जीवन का यही एकमात्र मार्ग है। आपको स्वेच्छा और सच्चे मन से प्रभु यीशु मसीह से केवल एक छोटी प्रार्थना करनी है, और साथ ही अपना जीवन उसे पूर्णतः समर्पित करना है। आप यह प्रार्थना और समर्पण कुछ इस प्रकार से भी कर सकते हैं, “प्रभु यीशु, मैं अपने पापों के लिए पश्चातापी हूँ, उनके लिए आप से क्षमा माँगता हूँ। मैं आपका धन्यवाद करता हूँ कि आपने मेरे पापों की क्षमा और समाधान के लिए उन पापों को अपने ऊपर लिया, उनके कारण मेरे स्थान पर क्रूस की मृत्यु सही, गाड़े गए, और मेरे उद्धार के लिए आप तीसरे दिन जी भी उठे, और आज जीवित प्रभु परमेश्वर हैं। कृपया मुझे और मेरे पापों को क्षमा करें, मुझे अपनी शरण में लें, और मुझे अपना शिष्य बना लें। मैं अपना जीवन आप के हाथों में समर्पित करता हूँ।” सच्चे और समर्पित मन से की गई आपकी एक प्रार्थना आपके वर्तमान तथा भविष्य को, इस लोक के और परलोक के जीवन को, अनन्तकाल के लिए स्वर्गीय एवं आशीषित बना देगी।

Harmful Effects of Ritualistic Observation of the Law – 1

 

In the previous articles we have seen that although the observance of customs and traditions, or the celebration of festivals, or the offering of gifts and sacrifices were a part of God's Law given to the Israelites through Moses, but their merely ritualistic, formal observance is not actually observing the Law. As the Lord Jesus has said, observing the Law is the coming into and continuing in the right relationship with God and men, in the manner instructed by God. To be in, and to remain in the right relationship with God means to love Him with all your body, soul, and spirit, and your possessions as well; to be completely committed to Him, to be obedient to Him, and to love others as self as well (Matthew 22:37-40). When man’s relationship with God is right, it will also manifest in building and maintaining the right relationship with fellow human beings. This is what fulfilling the Law actually means. It is evident that there is no place for any kind of formal observances in this. 

Formal and ritualistic observances can only occur if the Law is assumed to be the observance of customs and traditions, or the celebration of a festival, or the offering of gifts and sacrifices. In that case, these things are carried out according to the prescribed procedure at the appointed time, regardless of the individual’s faith or belief in them, qualitatively or quantitatively. We have also seen and understood that whether it were the people of the Old Testament or of the New Testament, whoever came into a proper relationship with God in His prescribed manner, also became acceptable to Him, and they all entered life, just as God had assured that they would, at various places in His Word. That is to say that by fulfilling the Law people did get the entry into life, as is stated in God’s Word.

But if instead of accepting and obeying the Law, i.e., God's instructions to come into and maintain the right relationship with God and humans, in its right form, if one only observes it by perfunctorily fulfilling customs and traditions, or celebrating the prescribed festivals, or by offering the stated gifts and sacrifices, and does not maintain a right attitude even when doing that, then it leads to restlessness and a lack of peace in his life. We see this illustrated through three examples from the New Testament in God's Word, the Bible; of these three, we will look at one example today, and the other two in the next article.

Two things are clear from the Lord's conversation with the Rich Young Ruler who had come to the Lord seeking eternal life (Matthew 19:16-22). Firstly, although, according to his self-assessment and his own standards, he had been following the Law since his childhood, yet he still felt a serious lack of something in his life. His question to the Lord, and also his response to the Lord’s answer, show that he well knew within himself that his "keeping the Law" had not made him acceptable to God; he was still far from eternal life. Secondly, it is evident from the instructions given to him by the Lord that his "keeping the Law" was neither complete, nor done with the right attitude. Take note, the commandments that the Lord Jesus speaks of to him in Matthew 19:18-19, they are all a part of the Ten Commandments. But there is no mention here of the first four commandments, which are about man's relationship with God. Moreover, even he did not bother to inform the Lord that not only had he been following the six commandments that were stated by the Lord, but had also followed those first four commandments that the Lord had not mentioned. A clear indication that there was no proper observance of these first four commandments in that person's life. 

Then, towards the end of this conversation, when the Lord asks him to sell all his possessions, distribute his wealth to the poor, and follow the Lord, the man could not do it (Matthew 19:21-22). In other words, he neither loved God with all his body, mind and possessions, nor did he love men enough to care for them. Though he claimed to have obeyed the commandments that taught about relationships with fellow humans, the man did not have true love and concern for his fellow humans. But a compelling desire for worldly gains and wealth was definitely there in his life. All these things show that he was neither following the whole Law, nor whatever part he was following, was with sincerity, and the right attitude. This exposes the hollowness of his claim of "keeping the commandments from childhood"; and makes it evident that his claim was nothing more than living to fulfil a formality. In the next article we will consider the other two examples.

If you have not yet accepted the discipleship of the Lord, make your decision in favor of the Lord Jesus now to ensure your eternal life and heavenly blessings. Where there is obedience to the Lord, where there is respect and obedience to His Word, there is also the blessing and protection of the Lord. Repenting of your sins, and asking the Lord Jesus for forgiveness of your sins, voluntarily and sincerely, surrendering yourself to Him - is the only way to salvation and heavenly life. You only have to say a short but sincere prayer to the Lord Jesus Christ willingly and with a penitent heart, and at the same time completely commit and submit your life to Him. You can also make this prayer and submission in words something like, “Lord Jesus, I am sorry for my sins and repent of them. I thank you for taking my sins upon yourself, paying for them through your life.  Because of them you died on the cross in my place, were buried, and you rose again from the grave on the third day for my salvation, and today you are the living Lord God and have freely provided to me the forgiveness, and redemption from my sins, through faith in you. Please forgive my sins, take me under your care, and make me your disciple. I submit my life into your hands." Your one prayer from a sincere and committed heart will make your present and future life, in this world and in the hereafter, heavenly and blessed for eternity.

पिछले लेख में हमने देखा था कि आम धारणा के विपरीत, चारों सुसमाचारों में दिए गए घटनाक्रम के आधार पर हम यह देखते हैं कि यहूदा इस्करियोती फसह के भोज के समय तो उपस्थित था; किन्तु प्रभु यीशु द्वारा मेज़ को स्थापित किये जाने के समय से पहले वह चला गया था। अर्थात यहूदा इस्करियोती ने प्रथम प्रभु भोज में भाग नहीं लिया था, जो निर्गमन 12 में दिये गए वर्णन से पूर्णतः मेल खाता है, और हमें यह निष्कर्ष प्रदान करता है कि प्रभु की मेज़ केवल उसके सच्चे, समर्पित, आज्ञाकारी शिष्यों के लिए ही है। आज हम इसी बात से सम्बन्धित कुछ और बातों पर विचार करेंगे।

अगले लेख से हम 1 कुरिन्थियों 11 पर जाएंगे, तथा आगे की बातें वहाँ से सीखेंगे। यदि आप एक मसीही विश्वासी हैं, और प्रभु की मेज़ में भाग लेते रहे हैं, तो कृपया अपने जीवन को जाँच कर देख लें कि आप वास्तव में पापों से छुड़ाए गए हैं तथा आप ने अपना जीवन प्रभु की आज्ञाकारिता में जीने के लिए उस को समर्पित किया है। आपके लिए यह अनिवार्य है कि आप परमेश्वर के वचन की सही शिक्षाओं को जानने के द्वारा एक परिपक्व विश्वासी बनें, तथा सभी शिक्षाओं को वचन की कसौटी पर परखने, और बेरिया के विश्वासियों के समान, लोगों की बातों को पहले वचन से जाँचने और उनकी सत्यता को निश्चित करने के बाद ही उनको स्वीकार करने और मानने वाले बनें (प्रेरितों 17:11; 1 थिस्सलुनीकियों 5:21)। अन्यथा शैतान द्वारा छोड़े हुए झूठे प्रेरित और भविष्यद्वक्ता मसीह के सेवक बन कर (2 कुरिन्थियों 11:13-15) अपनी ठग विद्या और चतुराई से आपको प्रभु के लिए अप्रभावी कर देंगे और आप के मसीही जीवन एवं आशीषों का नाश कर देंगे।

The Lord’s Table - Not for Those not Committed to the Lord (2)

 

In the previous article we have seen that contrary to the generally held concept, on the basis of the description of events given in the four gospels, Judas Iscariot was present at the time of the Passover meal, but had left by the time the Lord Jesus established the Table. That is to say that Judas Iscariot had not taken part in the first Holy Communion established by the Lord. This is in complete conformity with what was said in Exodus 12, and provides to us the conclusion that the Holy Communion is only for the true, fully surrendered and obedient disciples of the Lord. Today we will consider some other things related to this.

Sometimes, people argue that since the Lord allowed Judas Iscariot to partake of the first Holy Communion, so why can’t people who are not actually committed to the Lord do the same today? We need to understand it from two different perspectives - firstly, as we have seen above, the Lord Jesus did not let Judas partake of the first Holy Communion. Secondly, as we have repeatedly emphasized during the study from Exodus 12, partaking in the Lord’s Table is in remembrance of the sacrifice of the Lord to deliver us from the bondage of sin; it is to honor and obey Him. Partaking of the Lord’s Table does not accord anyone any holiness or righteousness, nor makes anyone acceptable to God, nor worthy of entering into heaven - there is no Biblical reference to support and affirm this thinking. So, how would anyone benefit, and in what manner, by participating in the Holy Communion, without being committed to the Lord? Rather, as it says in 1 Corinthians 11:27-31, those who participate unworthily, invite God’s judgement upon themselves. Therefore, for those not committed to the Lord, participating in the Lord’s Table is more harmful than of any good; and for their own benefit they should refrain from doing so, till they make a commitment to the Lord and join themselves to Him; as was the instruction for the Passover - only those who first came under the covenant of God with Abraham, and witnessed for it through circumcision, could participate in the Passover (Exodus 12:43-49).

From the next article, we will shift to 1 Corinthians 11 and learn more from there. If you are a Christian Believer and have been participating in the Lord’s Table, then please examine your life and make sure that you are actually a disciple of the Lord, i.e., are redeemed from your sins, have submitted and surrendered your life to the Lord Jesus to live in obedience to Him and His Word. You should also always, like the Berean Believers, first check and test all teachings that you receive from the Word of God, and only after ascertaining the truth and veracity of the teachings brought to you by men, should you accept and obey them (Acts 17:11; 1 Thessalonians 5:21). If you do not do this, the false apostles and prophets sent by Satan as ministers of Christ (2 Corinthians 11:13-15), will by their trickery, cunningness, and craftiness render you ineffective for the Lord and cause severe damage to your Christian life and your rewards.

If you have not yet accepted the discipleship of the Lord Jesus, then to ensure your eternal life and heavenly rewards, take a decision in favor of the Lord Jesus now. Wherever there is surrender and obedience towards the Lord Jesus, the Lord’s blessings and safety are also there. If you are still not Born Again, have not obtained salvation, or have not asked the Lord Jesus for forgiveness for your sins, then you have the opportunity to do so right now. A short prayer said voluntarily with a sincere heart, with heartfelt repentance for your sins, and a fully submissive attitude, “Lord Jesus, I confess that I have disobeyed You, and have knowingly or unknowingly, in mind, in thought, in attitude, and in deeds, committed sins. I believe that you have fully borne the punishment of my sins by your sacrifice on the cross, and have paid the full price of those sins for all eternity. Please forgive my sins, change my heart and mind towards you, and make me your disciple, take me with you." God longs for your company and wants to see you blessed, but to make this possible, is your personal decision. Will you not say this prayer now, while you have the time and opportunity to do so - the decision is yours.

        पिछले लेख में हमने परमेश्वर द्वारा इस्राएलियों को फसह के मेमने को लाने, रखने, बलिदान करने से सम्बन्धित निर्देशों को देखा था, तथा यह भी देखा था कि यह सब किस प्रकार से प्रभु यीशु के यरूशलेम में प्रवेश और क्रूस पर दिए गए उसके बलिदान के साथ सम्बन्धित है; परमेश्वर का वचन कितना सटीक और सही है। आज हम इसी विषय को आगे बढ़ाते हुए, कुछ और बातों को देखेंगे।

        इससे हम प्रभु भोज और उसमें भाग लेने के बारे में क्या सीखते हैं? परमेश्वर ने फसह के बारे में अपनी योजना और उससे सम्बन्धित अपने निर्देश अपने लोगों, इस्राएलियों, पर प्रकट कर दिये थे; और इसी प्रकार से प्रभु यीशु ने अपने शिष्यों को अपने बलिदान के बारे में, जो फसह के बलिदान को परिपूर्ण करना था, तथा जो मेज़ उसने स्थापित की थी, उनके बारे में बता दिया था। अब यह शिष्यों की ज़िम्मेदारी थी कि वे इसके बारे में मनन करें, अपने किसी भी संदेह का निवारण करें, और प्रभु से सीखें कि वह उनसे क्या चाहता है कि वे करें। आज भी प्रभु के निर्देश पवित्र बाइबल के रूप में हमारे हाथों में हैं; परमेश्वर का पवित्र आत्मा प्रत्येक नया जन्म पाए हुए मसीही विश्वासी में उद्धार पाने के पल से विद्यमान है (इफिसियों 1:13-14), और उसका मसीही विश्वासियों में विद्यमान होने का एक उद्देश्य है उन्हें प्रभु के निर्देशों और वचन को स्मरण करवाना तथा वचन को सिखाना (यूहन्ना 14:26)। किन्तु उस समय उन शिष्यों ने प्रभु की बातों को गंभीरता से नहीं लिया, और कुछ ही समय के बाद, प्रभु के नाम के लिये सताए जाने के पहले आभास पर ही वे उसे अकेला छोड़ कर भाग गए। इसी प्रकार से अधिकांश “ईसाई” या “मसीही” जो परंपरागत रीति से प्रभु भोज में नियमित भाग लेते रहते हैं, उन्होंने कभी यह परवाह और प्रयास नहीं किया है कि प्रभु भोज को गंभीरता से लें, उसके अर्थ, महत्व, और आवश्यकता का परमेश्वर के वचन से अध्ययन करें और उसके बारे में सीखें। वे अपनी डिनॉमिनेशन की सभाओं में श्रद्धा-पूर्ण और भक्त समझे जाना तो चाहते हैं, किन्तु परमेश्वर के वचन और निर्देशों को पढ़ने और सीखने में समय बिताना नहीं चाहते हैं। कठिनाइयों और सताव के समय में प्रभु के नाम के लिये खड़े होना और पहचाने जाना नहीं चाहते हैं; और न ही यदि कभी ईमानदारी और खराई से कार्य करने के लिए खड़े होने की बात आती है तो वे खड़े होते हैं, वरन संसार के लोगों के समान समझौते कर लेते हैं। प्रभु के प्रति उनकी श्रद्धा केवल कहने भर की होती है, व्यावहारिक जीवन में वास्तविक रीति से कार्यकारी नहीं। लेकिन प्रभु भोज में सम्मिलित होने की माँग है कि व्यक्ति हर परिस्थिति में और हर बात के लिये स्मरण करता रहे कि प्रभु यीशु ने उसके लिये क्या कुछ किया है, जिससे उसके समान चल सके (1 कुरिन्थियों 11:1)।

        फसह के लिए घराने में रखा गया बलि का मेमना लोगों को याद दिलाता था कि एक निर्दोष और मासूम को अपने जीवन के उत्तम समय में बलि होना पड़ेगा, ताकि उन्हें दासत्व से छुटकारा मिल सके। प्रभु यीशु ने मेज़ की स्थापना के समय निर्देश दिया कि उसके स्मरण में यह किया करें और इसी निर्देश को पौलुस प्रेरित के द्वारा पवित्र आत्मा ने भी दोहराया (लूका 22:19; 1 कुरिन्थियों 11:24-25)। प्रभु के द्वारा प्रभु भोज को स्थापित करना कोई बाद में सोची गई बात नहीं थी, न ही यह कोई रीति अथवा परंपरा है जिसे प्रभु ने सोचा और शिष्यों पर थोप दिया, और उन से कह दिया कि इसका भी प्रचार करें। प्रभु यीशु परमेश्वर पिता की इच्छा को तथा उनके बारे में पवित्र शास्त्र में जो लिखा गया था, उसे पूरा करने के लिये आए थे (लूका 24:25-27, 45-46; 1 कुरिन्थियों 15:3-4; इब्रानियों 10:7)। प्रभु भोज में भाग लेने का समय कोई औपचारिकता निभाते हुए किसी डिनॉमिनेशन की पुस्तक में से छपे हुए या फिर पुल्पिट पर से बोले जाने वाले शब्दों को रीति के समान दोहराने का और औपचारिकता को पूरा करने का समय नहीं है। प्रभु भोज का समय गंभीरता और गहन विचार के साथ प्रभु द्वारा हमारे पापों की क्षमा और उद्धार के लिए, शैतान की घातक पकड़ से छुड़ाए जाने के लिये चुकाई गई कीमत पर मनन और स्मरण करने का समय है। जो लोग प्रभु भोज में उनके मत, समुदाय, या डिनॉमिनेशन की रीति या परंपरा के रूप में, एक औपचारिकता निभाने के लिये भाग लेते हैं, बिना उसके महत्व को समझे या उसे गंभीरता से लिए; अर्थात, जिनके जीवनों और व्यवहार में इसमें भाग लेने के द्वारा कोई भला परिवर्तन और आत्मिक उन्नति नहीं होती है, उन्हें इसे हल्के में लेने से संबंधित इस गंभीर चेतावनी पर ध्यान देना और गहराई से विचार करना चाहिए: “जब कि मूसा की व्यवस्था का न मानने वाला दो या तीन जनों की गवाही पर, बिना दया के मार डाला जाता है। तो सोच लो कि वह कितने और भी भारी दण्‍ड के योग्य ठहरेगा, जिसने परमेश्वर के पुत्र को पांवों से रौंदा, और वाचा के लहू को जिस के द्वारा वह पवित्र ठहराया गया था, अपवित्र जाना है, और अनुग्रह की आत्मा का अपमान किया। क्योंकि हम उसे जानते हैं, जिसने कहा, कि पलटा लेना मेरा काम है, मैं ही बदला दूंगा: और फिर यह, कि प्रभु अपने लोगों का न्याय करेगा। जीवते परमेश्वर के हाथों में पड़ना भयानक बात है” (इब्रानियों 10:28-31)।

        अगले लेख में हम निर्गमन में से यहीं से आगे देखेंगे। यदि आप एक मसीही विश्वासी हैं, और प्रभु की मेज़ में भाग लेते रहे हैं, तो कृपया अपने जीवन को जाँच कर देख लें कि आप वास्तव में पापों से छुड़ाए गए हैं तथा प्रभु में एक नई सृष्टि बन गए हैं कि नहीं? क्या आप कलीसिया में विभाजनों और गुटों में बांटने में नहीं किन्तु एकता के साथ रहने में प्रयासरत रहते हैं कि नहीं? तथा क्या आप प्रभु की मेज़ में उसी प्रकार से भाग ले रहे हैं जैसे परमेश्वर ने निर्देश दिये हैं, प्रभु के प्रति पूर्ण समर्पण और प्रतिबद्धता के साथ, बड़ी गंभीरता से मेज़ के महत्व पर मनन करते हुए; या फिर आप किसी डिनॉमिनेशन की परंपरा अथवा किसी के मनमाने विचारों के अनुसार भाग ले रहे हैं? आपके लिए यह अनिवार्य है कि आप परमेश्वर के वचन की सही शिक्षाओं को जानने के द्वारा एक परिपक्व विश्वासी बनें, तथा निरंतर परिपक्वता में बढ़ते जाएं। साथ ही सभी शिक्षाओं को वचन की कसौटी पर परखने, और बेरिया के विश्वासियों के समान, लोगों की बातों को पहले वचन से जाँचने और उनकी सत्यता को निश्चित करने के बाद ही उनको स्वीकार करने और मानने वाले बनें (प्रेरितों 17:11; 1 थिस्सलुनीकियों 5:21)। अन्यथा शैतान द्वारा छोड़े हुए झूठे प्रेरित और भविष्यद्वक्ता मसीह के सेवक बन कर (2 कुरिन्थियों 11:13-15) अपनी ठग विद्या और चतुराई से आपको प्रभु के लिए अप्रभावी कर देंगे और आप के मसीही जीवन एवं आशीषों का नाश कर देंगे।

        यदि आपने अभी तक प्रभु की शिष्यता को स्वीकार नहीं किया है, तो अपने अनन्त जीवन और स्वर्गीय आशीषों को सुनिश्चित करने के लिए अभी उसके पक्ष में अपना निर्णय कर लीजिए। जहाँ प्रभु की आज्ञाकारिता है, उसके वचन की बातों का आदर और पालन है, वहाँ प्रभु की आशीष और सुरक्षा भी है। यदि आपने अभी तक नया जन्म, उद्धार नहीं पाया है, प्रभु यीशु से अपने पापों के लिए क्षमा नहीं माँगी है, तो अभी आपके पास समय और अवसर है कि यह कर लें। प्रभु यीशु से अपने पापों के लिए क्षमा माँगकर, स्वेच्छा से तथा सच्चे मन से अपने आप को उसकी अधीनता में समर्पित कर दीजिए - उद्धार और स्वर्गीय जीवन का यही एकमात्र मार्ग है। आपको स्वेच्छा और सच्चे मन से प्रभु यीशु मसीह से केवल एक छोटी प्रार्थना करनी है, और साथ ही अपना जीवन उसे पूर्णतः समर्पित करना है। आप यह प्रार्थना और समर्पण कुछ इस प्रकार से भी कर सकते हैं, “प्रभु यीशु मैं आपका धन्यवाद करता हूँ कि आपने मेरे पापों की क्षमा और समाधान के लिए उन पापों को अपने ऊपर लिया, उनके कारण मेरे स्थान पर क्रूस की मृत्यु सही, गाड़े गए, और मेरे उद्धार के लिए आप तीसरे दिन जी भी उठे, और आज जीवित प्रभु परमेश्वर हैं। कृपया मेरे पापों को क्षमा करें, मुझे अपनी शरण में लें, और मुझे अपना शिष्य बना लें। मैं अपना जीवन आप के हाथों में समर्पित करता हूँ।” परमेश्वर आपके साथ संगति रखने की बहुत लालसा रखता है तथा आपको आशीषित देखना चाहता है, लेकिन इसे सम्भव करना आपका व्यक्तिगत निर्णय है। सच्चे और समर्पित मन से की गई आपकी एक प्रार्थना आपके वर्तमान तथा भविष्य को, इस लोक के और परलोक के जीवन को, अनन्तकाल के लिए स्वर्गीय एवं आशीषित बना देगी। क्या आप अभी समय और अवसर होते हुए, इस प्रार्थना को नहीं करेंगे? निर्णय आपका है।

Exodus 12:6 - The Sacrificial Lamb & The Holy Communion (2)

 

        In the previous article we had seen about the instructions given to the Israelites taking, keeping, and sacrificing the lamb, and had also seen how they all are related to the Lord Jesus's entry into Jerusalem and His sacrifice on the Cross; how accurate and correct God's Word is. Today as we move forward on this topic, we will consider some more things.

        What do we learn from this about the Holy Communion and our participation in it? God had revealed His plans and the related instructions given by Him to His people, the Israelites, about the Passover; and similarly, the Lord had told His disciples about His coming sacrifice, which was a fulfillment of the Passover, and about the Table He had established. Now it was for the disciples to ponder over, clear up any doubts they had, and learn from the Lord to do as He wanted them to. His instructions are with us as the Bible; His Holy Spirit is in every Born-Again Christian Believer from the moment of salvation (Ephesians 1:13-14), and has been given to the Believers, amongst other things, to bring to their remembrance Lords instructions and teach them His Word, the Bible (John 14:26). But the disciples did not take His words seriously, and soon after, at the first sign of being persecuted for His name, deserted the Lord and ran away. Similarly, most “christians”, who regularly and ritualistically participate in the Communion, have never bothered to seriously consider its meaning, significance, and necessity, or study and learn the Word of God. They would like to be seen and treated as reverential and godly in their denominational meetings, but are not willing to spend time studying and learning God’s Word and its instructions. They are very wary of standing up and being counted for the Lord in times of persecution and hardships, or even showing honesty and integrity when tested for it, choosing to compromise and do like the world, instead. Their reverence for the Lord is nothing more than lip service. But the Holy Communion calls for the person to remember the Lord Jesus and what He has done, in all circumstances, so as to emulate Him (1 Corinthians 11:1).

        The sacrificial lamb for the Passover within the household would make the people ponder about how an innocent animal in the prime of life will have to be sacrificed, so that they could be delivered from their bondage. The Lord Jesus gave the Lord’s Table with the instruction to partake of it in remembrance of Him, which was reiterated by the Apostle Paul through the Holy Spirit (Luke 22:19; 1 Corinthians 11:24-25). Establishing the Holy Communion by the Lord Jesus, was not an afterthought, not a ritual or tradition He thought up and imposed upon His disciples, and instructed them to preach it around. The Lord Jesus came to fulfill God the Father’s will and all things written about Him in the Scriptures (Luke 24:25-27, 45-46; 1 Corinthians 15:3-4; Hebrews 10:7). The partaking in the Lord’s Table is not to be a time of perfunctorily reading and repeating some printed words from a denominational book, or some words conventionally being spoken from the pulpit, and fulfilling a formality. The Lord’s Table is to be a time of deeply pondering the price the Lord had to pay so that we could be redeemed and saved from our sins and the death-hold that Satan had us in. Those who participate in the Communion as a denominational ritual, a tradition, perfunctorily, without understanding the significance, or taking it seriously, i.e., in whose life partaking of the Lord’s Table is not bringing about any change for the better, and whose spiritual lives are not improving because of it, should deeply consider the serious admonition of taking it lightly, “Anyone who has rejected Moses' law dies without mercy on the testimony of two or three witnesses. Of how much worse punishment, do you suppose, will he be thought worthy who has trampled the Son of God underfoot, counted the blood of the covenant by which he was sanctified a common thing, and insulted the Spirit of grace? For we know Him who said, "Vengeance is Mine, I will repay," says the Lord. And again, "The Lord will judge His people." It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God” (Hebrews 10:28-31).

        In the next article we will carry on from here and see the subsequent verses from Exodus. If you are a Christian Believer, and have been participating in the Lord’s Table, then please examine your life and make sure that you are actually redeemed from your sins, are a new creation for the Lord. That you strive for unity, not divisions and factionalism in the Church, and have been participating as the Lord has instructed to be done, participating with full allegiance to the Lord, in all seriousness, and pondering over its significance; instead of doing it in any presumptive manner, or simply as a denominational ritual. It is also necessary for you to be spiritually mature, learn the right teachings of God’s Word. You should also always, like the Berean Believers first check and test all teachings you receive from the Word of God, and only after ascertaining the truth and veracity of the teachings brought to you by men, should you accept and obey them (Acts 17:11; 1 Thessalonians 5:21). If you do not do this, the false apostles and prophets sent by Satan as ministers of Christ (2 Corinthians 11:13-15), will by their trickery, cunningness, and craftiness render you ineffective for the Lord and cause severe damage to your Christian life and your rewards.

        If you have not yet accepted the discipleship of the Lord Jesus, then take a decision in its favor now to secure your eternal life and heavenly blessings. The Lord's security and blessings are present where there is obedience of the Lord, where His Word is honored and followed. If you are still not Born Again, have not obtained salvation, or have not asked the Lord Jesus for forgiveness for your sins, then you have the time and opportunity to do so right now. Ask the Lord Jesus to forgive your sins, and voluntarily and sincerely surrender yourselves into His hands - this is the only way to salvation and heavenly life. All you have to do is say a short prayer, voluntarily and with a sincere heart, with heartfelt repentance for your sins, and a fully submissive attitude. You can do this in this manner, “Lord Jesus, I confess that I have disobeyed You, and have knowingly or unknowingly, in mind, in thought, in attitude, and in deeds, committed sins. I believe that you have fully borne the punishment of my sins by your sacrifice on the cross, and have paid the full price of those sins for all eternity. Please forgive my sins, change my heart and mind towards you, and make me your disciple, take me with you." God longs for your company and wants to see you blessed, but to make this possible, is your personal decision. One prayer said with a sincere and surrendered heart will turn your present and future, your life here on earth and in the next world, forever and make you heavenly and blessed. Will you not say this prayer now, while you have the time and opportunity to do so? The decision is yours.

पिछले लेखों में हम देखते आ रहे हैं कि मसीही विश्वास के स्थान पर मसीही या ईसाई धर्म का निर्वाह करने वाले प्रेरितों 2:42 में दी गई मसीही विश्वासियों के लिए ‘लौलीन’ रहने वाली चार बातों (वचन की शिक्षा पाना, संगति रखना, प्रभु-भोज में सम्मिलित होना, प्रार्थना करना) को उद्धार या नया जन्म प्राप्त कर लेने के लिए गणित के एक समीकरण के समान, एक रस्म के समान मान तथा मना लेते हैं; और इनके वास्तविक महत्व को समझने और उसके आधार पर उनका निर्वाह करने की बजाए इनकी औपचारिकता को पूरा करने के द्वारा समझते हैं कि वे भी नया जन्म या उद्धार पाए हुए हैं। किन्तु बाइबल की शिक्षाओं के अनुसार यह मान्यता रखना गलत धारणा ही है, और यह करना धर्म-कर्म-रस्म के निर्वाह द्वारा प्रभु परमेश्वर को स्वीकार्य होने के व्यर्थ एवं निष्फल प्रयास हैं। पिछले लेख में हम प्रेरितों 2:42 की चार में से तीन बातों, बाइबल अध्ययन, प्रार्थना करना, और संगति रखना के औपचारिक निर्वाह के बारे में देख चुके हैं। आज हम प्रेरितों 2:42 की शेष एक बात, प्रभु-भोज में सम्मिलित होने के बारे में कुछ और विस्तार से देखेंगे।

जब प्रभु ने अपने पकड़वाए जाने से ठीक पहले प्रभु भोज की स्थापना की, उस समय केवल उसके चुने हुए वे बारह शिष्य ही उसके साथ थे, जिनमें से एक यहूदा इस्करियोती भी था, जो उसे पकड़वाने का निर्णय ले चुका था और यह करने के लिए पूर्णतः तैयार था। भोजन के आरंभ होने पर प्रभु यीशु ने उसे भोजन का पहला टुकड़ा दिया, जो उसके प्रति प्रभु के प्रेम का प्रतीक था, और तब यहूदा वहाँ से चला गया (यूहन्ना 13:26-30)। प्रभु-भोज के लिए रोटी तोड़ कर शिष्यों को देना और प्याला लेकर उन शिष्यों को देना प्रभु ने भोजन के दौरान, बियारी के पीछे (‘बियारी’ का अर्थ मुख्य भोजन है) किया (मत्ती 26:26-29; मरकुस 14:22, 23; लूका 22:20)। अर्थात प्रभु-भोज की स्थापना किए जाने के समय यहूदा इस्करियोती उनके मध्य में नहीं था। उसे मुख्य भोजन में तो हिस्सा मिला, अपितु उस मुख्य भोजन का पहला टुकड़ा प्रभु ने उसे ही दिया; यूहन्ना 13:30 में लिखा है कि वह रोटी लेते ही वहाँ से चला गया, संभवतः उसने वह रोटी का टुकड़ा भी नहीं खाया क्योंकि कहीं यह नहीं लिखा गया है कि उसने प्रभु से रोटी लेकर खा ली; किन्तु उसे मुख्य भोज के बाद स्थापित प्रभु-भोज में भाग नहीं मिला, वह तब तक प्रभु को छोड़ कर उसे पकड़वाने के लिए जा चुका था। अर्थात, मन में या व्यवहार में पाप रखने वाले व्यक्ति के लिए प्रभु-भोज में भाग नहीं है। इसीलिए 1 कुरिन्थियों 11:17-34, जो प्रभु भोज से संबंधित व्याख्या है, में 28 पद में स्पष्ट कहा गया है कि प्रभु-भोज में भाग लेने से पहले प्रत्येक व्यक्ति अपने आप को व्यक्तिगत रीति से जाँच ले, और अपने आप को प्रभु के सामने सही करके, अपने पापों को मान कर, उनके लिए पश्चाताप करके ही इसमें भाग ले। फिर पद 29-32 बताते हैं कि जो अपने आप को जाँचे और सुधारे बिना प्रभु भोज में भाग लेते हैं वे दंड के भागी हैं, और इस कारण कई तो “सो” भी गए अर्थात उन्हें अनुचित भाग लेते रहने के कारण मृत्यु को भी सहना पड़ा।

किन्तु प्रभु भोज में भाग लेने से पहले अपने आप को और अपने जीवन को प्रभु के सम्मुख जाँचना और सभी बातों को प्रभु के साथ ठीक करके, सही रीति से भाग लेना भी आज एक औपचारिकता बन कर रह गई है। बिना उद्धार या नया जन्म, और पापों की क्षमा पाए हुए लोग भी अपने धार्मिक अगुवे के पीछे-पीछे उनकी किताबों में छपी हुई रीतियों को बोलते और दोहराते हैं, और समझते हैं कि सब सही हो गया, फिर जाकर प्रभु भोज में भाग ले लेते हैं; और फिर वहाँ से बाहर निकलकर जीवन वैसा ही सांसारिकता में चलता रहता है जैसा पहले चल रहा था। साथ ही हम यह भी देखते हैं कि पहली मण्डली के लोग प्रतिदिन घर-घर मन की सिधाई से रोटी तोड़ते थे (प्रेरितों 2:46); जो फिर सप्ताह के पहले दिन जब वे लोग आराधना और उपासना के लिए एकत्रित होते थे, तब होने लगा (प्रेरितों 20:7)। इसके बाद से यही प्रतीत होता है कि यह प्रथम कलीसिया में स्थापित और मान्य विधि हो गई, क्योंकि नए नियम की किसी भी पुस्तक में न तो इसकी कहीं कोई आलोचना की गई है, न इसे सुधारने के लिए कहा गया है, और न ही ऐसा करने से मना किया गया है; जबकि इन पुस्तकों में अनेकों गलत शिक्षाओं को पहचाना और बताया गया है, उनकी आलोचना की गई है, और उन्हें सुधारने के लिए निर्देश भी दिए गए हैं; किन्तु प्रभु भोज में सप्ताह के पहले दिन, तथा प्रति सप्ताह भाग लेने के विषय में ऐसा कुछ नहीं कहा गया है। किन्तु आज अधिकांश चर्च में यह महीने में एक बार किया जाता है, जिसका बाइबल में कोई समर्थन नहीं है; और कहीं-कहीं तो वर्ष में एक बार भी किया जाता है, जिसका भी बाइबल से कोई समर्थन अथवा औचित्य नहीं है।

यदि व्यक्ति को प्रभु भोज में भाग लेने से पहले अपने आप को जाँचना है, अपने जीवन का पुनःअवलोकन करके अपनी कमियों और बुराइयों को प्रभु के सामने मानना है, तो प्रतिदिन अथवा सप्ताह में एक बार प्रभु-भोज का औचित्य समझ में आता है, क्योंकि इतना समय-अंतराल जीवन के पुनःअवलोकन करने के लिए उपयुक्त है। किन्तु महीने या वर्ष में एक बार यदि यह करना है, तो व्यक्ति कैसे सभी कुछ स्मरण कर सकता है और फिर गलतियों को पहचान कर उन्हें मान कैसे सकता है? ऐसे में तो प्रभु-भोज का औचित्य तथा कारण, दोनों ही व्यर्थ हो जाते हैं और यह मात्र एक औपचारिकता ही रह जाता है - जिसका निर्वाह इसी रूप में अधिकांशतः किया भी जाता है, न कि उसकी गंभीरता और उसके सही अभिप्राय के साथ।

फिर वही गणित के समीकरण की मानसिकता, मसीही विश्वासी को प्रभु भोज में भाग लेना है; इसलिए प्रभु भोज में भाग लेने वाला भी मसीही विश्वासी है। ऐसे लोगों में इस भोज के महत्व की कोई समझ नहीं, इसके प्रति कोई गंभीरता नहीं; एक रस्म पूरी करनी थी, सो कर ली, इसलिए अब यह मान लिया जाता है कि क्योंकि उन्होंने प्रभु-भोज में भाग ले लिया है इसलिए प्रभु भी उन्हें स्वीकार करने और आशीष देने के लिए बाध्य हो गया है। किन्तु प्रभु परमेश्वर किसी मनुष्य के कर्म से कुछ करने के लिए बाध्य नहीं होता है, और न मनुष्य के चलाए चलता है। यह मानसिकता रखने वाले लोग 1 कुरिन्थियों 11:29 के अनुसार, अपने लिए आशीष नहीं, श्राप कमा रहे हैं, और उन्हें एक दिन इसके लिए बहुत गंभीर परिस्थिति का सामना करना पड़ेगा।

आज प्रभु भोज में सम्मिलित होने के बारे में देखने के बाद, अगले लेख में परमेश्वर के वचन बाइबल की शिक्षाओं में से हम ऐसे ही बड़ी लगन से किन्तु गलत मानसिकता के साथ निभाई जाने वाली एक अन्य बात, बपतिस्मे को देखेंगे। किन्तु यदि आपने अभी तक अपने आप को प्रभु यीशु मसीह की शिष्यता में समर्पित नहीं किया है, और आप अभी भी अपने जन्म अथवा संबंधित धर्म तथा उसकी रीतियों के पालन के आधार पर अपने आप को प्रभु का जन समझ रहे हैं, तो आपको भी अपनी इस गलतफहमी से बाहर निकल कर सच्चाई को स्वीकार करने और उसका पालन करने की आवश्यकता है। आज और अभी आपके पास अपनी अनन्तकाल की स्थिति को सुधारने का अवसर है; प्रभु यीशु से अपने पापों के लिए क्षमा माँगकर, स्वेच्छा से तथा सच्चे मन से अपने आप को उसकी अधीनता में समर्पित कर दीजिए - उद्धार और स्वर्गीय जीवन का यही एकमात्र मार्ग है। आपको स्वेच्छा और सच्चे मन से प्रभु यीशु मसीह से केवल एक छोटी प्रार्थना करनी है, और साथ ही अपना जीवन उसे पूर्णतः समर्पित करना है। आप यह प्रार्थना और समर्पण कुछ इस प्रकार से भी कर सकते हैं, “प्रभु यीशु मैं आपका धन्यवाद करता हूँ कि आपने मेरे पापों की क्षमा और समाधान के लिए उन पापों को अपने ऊपर लिया, उनके कारण मेरे स्थान पर क्रूस की मृत्यु सही, गाड़े गए, और मेरे उद्धार के लिए आप तीसरे दिन जी भी उठे, और आज जीवित प्रभु परमेश्वर हैं। कृपया मेरे पापों को क्षमा करें, मुझे अपनी शरण में लें, और मुझे अपना शिष्य बना लें। मैं अपना जीवन आप के हाथों में समर्पित करता हूँ।” सच्चे और समर्पित मन से की गई आपकी एक प्रार्थना आपके वर्तमान तथा भविष्य को, इस लोक के और परलोक के जीवन को, अनन्तकाल के लिए स्वर्गीय एवं आशीषित बना देगी।

English Translation

The Lord’s Table in Christian Faith

In the previous articles we have been seeing that those who believe in and following the Christian religion instead of the Christian faith, use the four integral things in a Born-Again Christian Believer’s life, related to the Christian faith, and mentioned in Acts 2:42 (Bible study, Fellowship, Lord’s Table, Prayer), like a mathematical equation, and consider themselves as being saved or Born-Again. The followers of the Christian religion observe these four things ritualistically, to fulfill religious formality, and then think themselves to be saved as well. This is a misunderstanding, a wrong notion on their part, and does not reconcile them with God, since it is similar to the notion of salvation by works, i.e., through observance of religion-good works-rituals and ceremonies etc. In our study on the significance and observance of these four things of Acts 2:42, we have seen three, Bible study, Prayers, and Fellowship, in some detail in the previous articles, and the remaining one - participating in the Lord’s Table we will be considering in this article; and then, in the next article we look at another important thing - Baptism which is also often misunderstood and practiced inappropriately by those who follow the Christian religion.

4. Participating in the Lord’s Table: The Lord Jesus, before His being caught for being crucified, observed the Passover with His disciples, and during that feast, He established the participation in the Lord’s Table i.e., the Holy Communion, for His disciples, as has been written by Paul: “For I received from the Lord that which I also delivered to you: that the Lord Jesus on the same night in which He was betrayed took bread; and when He had given thanks, He broke it and said, "Take, eat; this is My body which is broken for you; do this in remembrance of Me." In the same manner He also took the cup after supper, saying, "This cup is the new covenant in My blood. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me."” (1 Corinthians 11:23-25). A Born-Again, i.e., a saved person, in obedience to the Lord’s command, participates in the Lord’s Table after examining himself. But as it happens with the other three things of Acts 2:42, many people participate in the Holy Communion ritualistically, to fulfill a tradition, assuming that by doing so they will become righteous in the eyes of God, and will earn some heavenly benefits for themselves. This is only a misunderstanding on their part, this concept is neither factual, nor the teaching of the Lord Jesus, but another example of something done under the mathematical equation mentality.

At the time the Lord Jesus established the Holy Communion, only His chosen twelve disciples were present there with Him; one of them, Judas Iscariot had already decided to betray and have Him caught, and was fully prepared to carry out his plan. The Lord Jesus started the supper, the meal of the Passover feast, and gave the first piece of bread to Judas Iscariot, which was an indication of the Lord’s love towards him, and Judas having received the bread, went out of the place (John 13:26-30). But the establishment of the Holy Communion was after this, during the eating of the meal (Matthew 26:26-29; Mark 14:22, 23; Luke 22:20), at which time Judas Iscariot had already left them. So, at the time the Holy Communion was established by the Lord, Judas Iscariot was not amongst them; he had been there at the time of starting the main meal, he received the first piece of bread from the Lord, but did not remain back, John 13:30 says that he left immediately after receiving the bread from the Lord, probably never even ate that piece - there is no recorded mention of him eating what the Lord had given him. It is therefore evident that the Lord’s Table was not meant for those who have sin hidden in their hearts and behaviour. It is for this reason that it is clearly stated in the instructions related to the Lord’s Table in 1 Corinthians 11:17-34, that every person participating in the Table should first carefully examine himself (v. 28), and having confessed his sins, asking the Lord’s forgiveness for them and making himself right before the Lord, only then should he take part in the Table. Then verses 29-32 tell that those who participate in the Holy Communion without examining themselves and setting themselves right before the Lord, they will have to suffer the punishment, so much so, that because of having partaken of the Table wrongly, many had even died, besides suffering various other chastisements from the Lord.

    But today, this necessity of self-examination of one’s life before the Lord, and setting things right before the Lord, has become more of a formality, than an actually practiced thing. It is very commonly seen in the followers of the Christian religion that people who have never been saved or Born-Again, never having received the forgiveness of their sins, they just traditionally speak out the words and sentences printed in their denominational book, at the behest of their religious leader, assume everything has been set right, go and participate in the Holy Communion, and once they step out of the Church, it is life as usual for them, till the time of the next Holy Communion. But in contrast to this we see that the members of the first Believer’s Assembly, used to break bread from house to house everyday with simplicity of heart (Acts 2:46); which sometime later was changed to the first day of the week, when they would gather to praise and worship the Lord (Acts 20:7). This seems to be the accepted and established practice of the first Church, since this has never been criticized, or corrected, or forbidden in any of the New Testament books, wherein many wrong teachings and practices have been identified, criticized, and corrected; but never the partaking in the Lord’s Table on the first day of the week, every week. But in most of the traditional and denominational Churches the Holy Communion is kept once a month, and in some Churches even once a year, and neither of these time periods have any support or affirmation from the Bible.

If a person has to examine himself and his life before participating in the Table, has to review his life, identify where he had gone wrong, and confess his sins and errors before the Lord, then participating daily or once week is quite understandable, since this is a convenient time interval for reviewing one’s recent past activities. But if a person is to do this once a month or once a year, then how can he be expected to remember and confess all the errors and short-comings over such a long period of time? In such a scenario, the very purpose of the Lord’s Table is lost and it is reduced to a formality, a ritual - and that is how it is mostly being observed as well.

This is again functioning with the mathematical equation mentality - those in the Christian faith participate in the Lord’s Table; therefore, those who participate in the Lord’s Table should be considered as those living by the Christian faith. The people who participate with this misunderstanding, have no idea of the seriousness and implications of doing so; for them it is a ritual that has to be carried out, and they have done so, so they think that now the Lord is obliged to accept and bless them for it. But the fact is that the Lord God is never under any obligation to any person or any ritual or works, he cannot be dictated to or manipulated by man. People with such an attitude and thinking, in accordance with 1 Corinthians 11:29, are earning chastisement and curses for themselves, not any blessings; and one day they will have to face a very serious situation because of what they do.

After considering the Lord’s Table, in the next article, we will take a look at another teaching of the Bible, and that too is practiced with great enthusiasm, but often with a wrong understanding and meaning - Baptism. But, if you are still thinking of yourself as being a Christian, because of being born in a particular family and having fulfilled the religious rites and rituals prescribed under your religion or denomination since your childhood, then you too need to come out of your misunderstanding of Biblical facts and start understanding and living according to what the Word of God says, instead of what any denominational creed says or teaches.

If you are still not Born Again, have not obtained salvation, or have not asked the Lord Jesus for forgiveness for your sins, then you have the opportunity to do so right now. A short prayer said voluntarily with a sincere heart, with heartfelt repentance for your sins, and a fully submissive attitude, “Lord Jesus, I confess that I have disobeyed You, and have knowingly or unknowingly, in mind, in thought, in attitude, and in deeds, committed sins. I believe that you have fully borne the punishment of my sins by your sacrifice on the cross, and have paid the full price of those sins for all eternity. Please forgive my sins, change my heart and mind towards you, and make me your disciple, take me with you." God longs for your company and wants to see you blessed, but to make this possible, is your personal decision. Will you not say this prayer now, while you have the time and opportunity to do so - the decision is yours.
