Teachings Related to the Gospel – 3

In this series on Christian’s growth through God’s Word, in the preliminary considerations, we had seen that the history of the Church, especially of the first Church, very clearly shows us that the preaching, teaching, and obedience of the pure, unadulterated Word of God resulted in a rapid spread of the Christian Faith, of spiritual maturity of the Christian Believers, and the establishing and growth the Church or Assemblies all over the world. The Bible also teaches that a proper ministry of God’s Word amongst the Christian Believers, and in the Church is necessary for the spiritual maturity of the Believers and the growth of the Church. We have also seen that for this to happen there are three categories of Biblical teachings that are essential and ought to be given amongst Believers and in Churches. These categories are, teachings related to the gospel, about the six basic principles, and those about Christian living. Of these three categories, we have begun considering and learning from the Bible about the first one, teachings related to the gospel.

We have seen so far that the gospel is not about any earthly or temporal gains or prosperity, but about the Kingdom of God, which has been made available by God to everyone, including the poor and the oppressed, through the work and ministry of God’s Son, the Lord Jesus Christ. The Lord Jesus began His earthly ministry by preaching the gospel, and the beginning of His ministry also marked the beginning of the end times. In the last article we have seen that for the gospel to be effective two things, sincere repentance and believing in the gospel, both are essential; and that we will learn about both of them from the Bible. We have first started to learn what the Bible says about repentance, and then we will take up learning what it means to believe.

In context of the Lord Jesus’s earthly ministry and the gospel in God’s Word, when we look up about repentance, we realise how essential, and integral to the efficacy of the gospel the preaching and practice of sincere repentance is. Consider the following:

  • The first and main subject of the preaching and ministry of the forerunner of the Lord Jesus, John the Baptist, to prepare the people for the ministry of the Lord Jesus, was repentance from sins (Matthew 3:1-2). He only baptized those who confessed their sins (Matthew 3:6); and refused to baptize the Pharisees who wanted to get it done perfunctorily, asking them to first demonstrate repentance in their lives (Matthew 3:7-12).

  • Repentance was the opening subject of the preaching and ministry of the Lord Jesus (Mark 1:15). It was also a part of the last instructions given by the Lord to His disciples before His ascension (Luke 24:47). So, the Lord Jesus’s earthly ministry began and closed with preaching about repentance, and He handed over the same to His disciples to carry forth into the world.

  • The disciples of the Lord Jesus, when they were first sent out for ministry by the Lord, they preached about repentance during their ministry (Mark 6:7-12).

  • Repentance was the subject of Peter’s first sermon on the day of Pentecost to the devout Jews (Acts 2:5) gathered in Jerusalem to fulfil the Law (Acts 2:37-38), through which the first Church was born. This is something very important to note; it was these devout Jews who had come to fulfil the Law, who, on hearing Peter’s sermon were cut to the heart. In other words, through Peter’s sermon they realized the inadequacy and futility of their gathering in Jerusalem to fulfil the rituals; and it is to them that Peter exhorts that they must repent of their sins. This clearly implies that their being devout, and their fulfilling the requirements of the Law, was not enough; and even they in their hearts realized this, therefore they cried out to know from Peter, what was it that they needed to do to fill this void within them.

  • Repentance and faith towards the Lord Jesus were the subjects of the ministry of Paul, after his conversion (Acts 20:21).

  • Repentance was the theme of the preaching, even of the prophets of the Old Testament (Jeremiah 25:4-5).

It is often seen that people say they have repented, said the prayer for repentance, and have come to believe in the gospel, but their lives do not affirm their claims. How then, can we know about the genuineness of one’s repentance? The Bible shows us that genuine repentance is accompanied by some things that affirms the genuineness of the repentance. We will see about this in the next article.

If you have not yet accepted the discipleship of the Lord, make your decision in favor of the Lord Jesus now to ensure your eternal life and heavenly blessings. Where there is obedience to the Lord, where there is respect and obedience to His Word, there is also the blessing and protection of the Lord. Voluntarily repent of your sins, and ask the Lord Jesus for forgiveness of your sins, voluntarily and sincerely surrender yourself to Him - this is the only way to salvation and heavenly life. You only have to say a short but sincere prayer to the Lord Jesus Christ willingly and with a penitent heart, and at the same time completely commit and submit your life to Him. You can also make this prayer and submission in words something like, “Lord Jesus, I am sorry for my sins and repent of them. I thank you for taking my sins upon yourself, paying for them through your life.  Because of them you died on the cross in my place, were buried, and you rose again from the grave on the third day for my salvation, and today you are the living Lord God and have freely provided to me the forgiveness, and redemption from my sins, through faith in you. Please forgive my sins, take me under your care, and make me your disciple. I submit my life into your hands." Your one prayer from a sincere and committed heart will make your present and future life, in this world and in the hereafter, heavenly and blessed for eternity.

The Elementary Principles – 42

Baptisms - 22

Is it Necessary for Salvation? (7) – Points to Ponder

We have seen in the previous articles that there is no Biblical support for baptism being capable of washing away anyone’s sins. We also considered the verses commonly used in support of the argument that baptism saves, washes away sins, and is necessary for salvation. On analyzing these verses while keeping in mind the basic principles of Biblical interpretation, we saw that these verses instead of supporting the necessity of baptism for salvation, actually show that salvation is by faith, by believing on the Lord Jesus, and not by baptism. We also considered the devious implication of accepting the argument of getting washed and saved through baptism, that it is tantamount to saying that the priceless blood of Jesus shed on the Cross of Calvary for the washing away of sins, and waters of baptism are equivalent. Since the waters of baptism can also accomplish the same for which Lord Jesus had to come down from heaven, sacrifice His life, shed His blood. Accepting the argument that baptism washes away sins also raises many Biblically untenable questions, because this argument either goes against, or does not harmonize with many other Biblical teachings. Today too we will continue to consider some other Biblical points that show how hollow and unacceptable this popular misconception of baptism washing away sins actually is.

In 1 Corinthians 1:13-16, Paul speaks about his priorities in his ministry; and as is apparent from these verses, to him, his preaching the gospel was far more important than his baptizing people. Therefore, the question arises, had baptism been even just as important as preaching God’s Word for bringing people to faith in Christ Jesus and for salvation, would Paul have neglected baptizing people? Would he not have been as zealous for baptizing as he was for preaching God’s Word? If baptism had any importance for the people getting saved, would he have been so forthright in stating his not baptizing, and about confidently saying that the Lord had not sent him to baptize? If baptism was actually as important for salvation as it is taught to be, then how does one explain Paul’s being committed to preaching the gospel at any cost so that people may be saved (1 Corinthians 9:19-22), and yet neglecting emphasizing baptism throughout his ministry, and never having any remorse for it; rather being happy that he had done his assigned ministry well and content that now a great reward awaits him in heaven (2 Timothy 4:6-8)? This can only be possible if the contrived false relationship between baptism and salvation had never been present, but has now been brought in through false teachings and put into the hearts of people.

Acts 19:1-6, especially vs.4 says that John the Baptist though baptizing a baptism of repentance, urged those coming to him for baptism to believe in the Lord once He was manifested.  Take note that John the Baptist did not ask them to take another baptism in the name of Lord Jesus, but to believe in the Lord Jesus; the obvious implication is that neither John’s, nor a re-baptism in Christ Jesus’s name would save them, but their salvation would be only through believing in Christ Jesus. This is a very clear statement from the Scripture of the insufficiency of baptism to save, and of emphasizing faith over baptism – those baptized had also to believe on the Lord Jesus.

Baptism – infant/child or adult, as a liturgical procedure, has been and is being carried out in denominational churches all over the world, and in many denominations, after infant/child baptism a confirmation too is done when the person becomes a youth. But has this ritual baptism brought about any significant change in the life and habits of those been baptized and / or confirmed? The evident results of such baptisms the world over only go to show that baptism does not bring any repentance or abhorrence for sins, or any change from worldly ways in the person’s life. It is only when such a person repents of his sins, accepts the Lord Jesus as his Savior and submits his life to Him that his life begins to change. So, based on this everyday experience what conclusions can we draw? What is necessary – repentance and faith in the Lord or being baptized in His name without any repentance? Which is actually efficacious in changing a person’s life and eternal destiny – baptism or faith in the Lord Jesus?

The thief on the cross who repented and prayed to the Lord Jesus was granted an immediate assurance of being with the Lord in paradise, by the Lord Jesus Himself, without being baptized. Where did the thief go – to paradise or to hell? If he went to be with the Lord in paradise, then baptism is not essential for salvation as it is made out to be. If he did not go into paradise as had been assured to him, then the Lord gave a false assurance and was a liar, since He deceived a dying person. Where does this leave the essentiality of baptism? If one sinner can enter heaven through repentance and faith, why can’t all others do so? Can you see how your antagonistic attitude towards the facts of the Bible creates a confusion and division amongst the Believers, and creates doubts in their hearts about God’s Word?

In Luke 18:9-14, in the parable told by the Lord Jesus, about the Pharisee and the Tax Collector who went to the Temple to pray, in verse 14, the Tax Collector, was declared justified by his prayer of repentance. The Lord did not deem it necessary for him to fulfil any other religious obligation or to take baptism, to be justified. His prayer of repentance was sufficient for God to consider him as “justified;” and who can condemn the person whom God has justified (Romans 8:33-34); whether or not he has taken baptism?

In the coming articles we will consider some other controversial issues related to baptism.

If you have not yet accepted the discipleship of the Lord, make your decision in favor of the Lord Jesus now to ensure your eternal life and heavenly blessings. Where there is obedience to the Lord, where there is respect and obedience to His Word, there is also the blessing and protection of the Lord. Repenting of your sins, and asking the Lord Jesus for forgiveness of your sins, voluntarily and sincerely, surrendering yourself to Him - is the only way to salvation and heavenly life.

Growth through God’s Word /

So, the Lord Jesus’s earthly ministry began and closed with preaching about repentance, and He handed the same over to His disciples to carry forth into the world.
This is something very important to note; it was these devout Jews who had come to fulfil the Law, they on hearing Peter’s sermon were cut to the heart. In other words, through Peter’s sermon they realized the inadequacy and futility of their gathering in Jerusalem to fulfil the rituals; and to them Peter exhorts to repent of their sins. This clearly implies that their being devout, and their fulfilling the requirements of the Law, was not enough; and even they in their hearts realized this, therefore they cried out to know from Peter, what was it that they needed to do to fill this void.
  • Repentance and faith towards the Lord Jesus were the subjects of the ministry of Paul, after his conversion (Acts 20:21).
  • Repentance was the theme of the preaching of even of the prophets of the Old Testament (Jeremiah 25:4-5).

It is often seen that people say they have repented, said the prayer for repentance, and have come to believe in the gospel, but their lives do not affirm their claims. How then, can we know about the genuineness of one’s repentance? The Bible shows us that genuine repentance is accompanied by some activity that affirms the genuineness of the repentance.

Repenting of your sins, and asking the Lord Jesus for forgiveness of your sins, voluntarily and sincerely, surrendering yourself to Him - is the only way to salvation and heavenly life.

(7) / Baptism Related Controversies (7)

Click Here for the English Translation

Baptism - Necessary for Salvation? (7) – Points to Ponder

We have seen in the previous articles that there is no Biblical support for baptism being capable of washing away anyone’s sins. We also considered the verses commonly used in support of the argument that baptism saves, washes away sins, and is necessary for salvation. On analyzing these verses while keeping in mind the basic principles of Biblical interpretation, we saw that these verses instead of supporting the necessity of baptism for salvation, actually show that salvation is by faith, by believing on the Lord Jesus, and not by baptism. We also considered the devious implication of accepting the argument of getting saved through baptism, that it is tantamount to saying that the priceless blood of Jesus shed on the Cross of Calvary for the washing away of sins, and waters of baptism are equivalent.

Take note that John the Baptist did not ask them to take another baptism in the name of Lord Jesus, but to believe in the Lord Jesus; neither John’s, nor a re-baptism in Christ Jesus’s name would save them, but their salvation would be only through believing in Christ Jesus.

What is necessary – repentance and faith in the Lord or being baptized in His name?

In Luke 18:9-14, in the parable told by the Lord Jesus, about the Pharisee and the Tax Collector who went to the Temple to pray, in verse 14, the Tax Collector, was declared justified by his prayer of repentance. The Lord did not deem it necessary for him to fulfill any other religious obligation or to take baptism, to be justified. His prayer of repentance was sufficient for God to consider him as “justified”; and who can condemn the person whom God has justified (Romans 8:33-34); whether or not he has taken baptism?

In the coming articles we will consider some other controversial issues related to baptism. If you are a Christian Believer, then please examine your life and make sure that you are actually a Born-Again disciple of the Lord, i.e., are redeemed from your sins, have submitted and surrendered your life to the Lord Jesus to live in obedience to Him and His Word. Whoever may be the preacher or teacher, but you should always, like the Berean Believers, first cross-check and test all teachings that you receive, from the Word of God. Only after ascertaining the truth and veracity of the teachings brought to you by men, should you accept and obey them (Acts 17:11; 1 Thessalonians 5:21). If you do not do this, the false apostles and prophets sent by Satan as ministers of Christ (2 Corinthians 11:13-15), will by their trickery, cunningness, and craftiness render you ineffective for the Lord and cause severe damage to your Christian life and your rewards.

If you have not yet accepted the discipleship of the Lord Jesus, then to ensure your eternal life and heavenly rewards, take a decision in favor of the Lord Jesus now. Wherever there is surrender and obedience towards the Lord Jesus, the Lord’s blessings and safety are also there. If you are still not Born Again, have not obtained salvation, or have not asked the Lord Jesus for forgiveness for your sins, then you have the opportunity to do so right now. A short prayer said voluntarily with a sincere heart, with heartfelt repentance for your sins, and a fully submissive attitude, “Lord Jesus, I confess that I have disobeyed You, and have knowingly or unknowingly, in mind, in thought, in attitude, and in deeds, committed sins. I believe that you have fully borne the punishment of my sins by your sacrifice on the cross, and have paid the full price of those sins for all eternity. Please forgive my sins, change my heart and mind towards you, and make me your disciple, take me with you." God longs for your company and wants to see you blessed, but to make this possible, is your personal decision. Will you not say this prayer now, while you have the time and opportunity to do so - the decision is yours.
