Always Sincere & Committed to the Lord

In the last article we concluded David’s third instruction to Solomon for leading a blessed and successful life; and this instruction too equally applies to us Christian Believers today. We saw that it is not enough to ‘obey’ and do according to whatever the religious leaders tell us to do. Since very often they could be preaching and teaching man-made doctrines, practices, and rituals, instead of the actual Word of God, which they are supposed to be preaching and teaching to the Church congregation for the growth of the Church and the edification of the Christian Believers. This aspect has been emphasized and explained many times in the various articles on stewardship; especially while considering the stewardship of God’s Word. In those articles Acts 17:11 and 1 Thessalonians 5:21 have been quoted repeatedly to emphasize that it is the teaching of God’s Word to not accept anything without first verifying it from God’s Word. This remains always applicable, no matter who is preaching or teaching, and whatever be the name, fame, and standing of the preacher. This is since eventually every preacher is human and is prone to being beguiled and misled by Satan. Also 1 Corinthians 14:29 instructs the congregation to evaluate whatever anybody is preaching or teaching from God’s Word; it is their responsibility. If the Churches and congregations adhere to these instructions, the Church would be saved from so many false doctrines and wrong teachings, and Satan would have a hard time infiltrating the Church with his lies and deceptions.

Today we will consider the fourth of David’s instructions to Solomon as given in 1 Kings 2:2-4; this fourth instruction is, “To be careful, taking heed, to remain sincere and committed to the Lord always (1 Kings 2:4b).” Again, because of the detailed studies we have already done in the articles on stewardship, we need not go into the same details again, but only need to build up on that in this concluding article.

The basis of this fourth instruction is God’s characteristic of being omniscient. There is nothing, absolutely nothing, that God does not already know about; and knows about in far greater detail than we humans could ever imagine. David had instructed Solomon earlier, while handing over the charge to build the Temple to him, “As for you, my son Solomon, know the God of your father, and serve Him with a loyal heart and with a willing mind; for the Lord searches all hearts and understands all the intent of the thoughts. If you seek Him, He will be found by you; but if you forsake Him, He will cast you off forever” (1 Chronicles 28:9). In other words, although the Lord God knows everything about everything, even the intents of man’s thoughts, yet He searches the hearts. The Lord God does this to encourage man to live in sincerity towards God. There is no way any man can ever outwit God or cleverly pull wool over His eyes. So, if everyone, especially God’s people always live, and work, and serve God with this realization that God always knows everything and nothing is ever hidden from Him, then life would be so much more blessed and successful for them.

God’s Word has various examples of people who tried to fool God and suffered very serious consequences; and also of those who unhesitatingly accepted their sins and errors, repented of them, and came out blessed and glorified. Let us look at a few examples from both, the Old and the New Testaments:

  • Israel’s first king, King Saul, as we have seen from 1 Samuel chapter 15, disobeyed God, and fearing men, saved the good animals of the Amalekites instead of killing them all, as God had instructed. When Samuel confronted him about the disobedience, he tried to wriggle out of the situation by making the excuse that the good animals were left alive to sacrifice to the Lord – a lie compounding his disobedience; and God rejected him from being king, he lost the kingdom.

  • David, though he had committed the heinous sin of adultery and murder, but when he was confronted for it by the prophet Nathan, under instructions from God, he immediately and unhesitatingly accepted his sin and repented of it (2 Samuel 12:13-14). Though David was chastised, but he was also blessed; and even in the New Testament, he is still called a man after God’s own heart (Acts 13:22).

  • Peter, despite his emphatic claims to the contrary, denied the Lord three times; but repented also (Matthew 26:69-75). After His resurrection, the Lord restored Peter to his ministry, giving him charge of looking after His followers (John 21:15-19).

  • Ananias and Saphira, out of covetousness about the commitment they had made, lied and tried to fool the Believers, the Apostles, and God. They were given an opportunity to confess their sin but they did not confess, instead they lied and stuck to their falsehood; and had to pay for it with their lives (Acts 5:1-11).

In God’s service and fellowship, there is no room or possibility of getting away through deception; rather as it says in Proverbs 28:13, those who try to hide their sins by deceiving, end up suffering even worse than what they would have suffered by confessing and acknowledging their sins. Therefore, David’s instruction to Solomon, and even to us today - walk before God in truth with all your heart and with all your soul (1 Kings 2:4b). Honesty is, and always will be the best policy, and even if we sin, we have the assurance that if we confess our sins, we will be restored (1 John 1:9). But those who try to hide their sins and deceive God, need to ponder over Proverbs 28:13.

This passage, 1 Kings 2:2-4, also speaks of the benefits of following these instructions: Prosperity in all things (1 Kings 2:3c), and God’s blessings extending to posterity (1 Kings 2:4c). This is why this expository series on this passage has been titled “Blessed and Successful Life” since that is the net result of understanding and following these instructions.

We conclude this series with a passage from God’s Word, one that calls all readers to ponder over and come to a conclusion. The passage is: “I call heaven and earth as witnesses today against you, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing; therefore choose life, that both you and your descendants may live; that you may love the Lord your God, that you may obey His voice, and that you may cling to Him, for He is your life and the length of your days; and that you may dwell in the land which the Lord swore to your fathers, to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, to give them.” (Deuteronomy 30:19-20).

We will begin a new series from the next article on Growth Through God’s Word.

If you have not yet accepted the discipleship of the Lord, make your decision in favor of the Lord Jesus now to ensure your eternal life and heavenly blessings. Where there is obedience to the Lord, where there is respect and obedience to His Word, there is also the blessing and protection of the Lord. Voluntarily repent of your sins and ask the Lord Jesus for forgiveness of your sins, voluntarily and sincerely surrender yourself to Him - this is the only way to salvation and heavenly life. You only have to say a short but sincere prayer to the Lord Jesus Christ willingly and with a penitent heart, and at the same time completely commit and submit your life to Him. You can also make this prayer and submission in words something like, “Lord Jesus, I am sorry for my sins and repent of them. I thank you for taking my sins upon yourself, paying for them through your life.  Because of them you died on the cross in my place, were buried, and you rose again from the grave on the third day for my salvation, and today you are the living Lord God and have freely provided to me the forgiveness, and redemption from my sins, through faith in you. Please forgive my sins, take me under your care, and make me your disciple. I submit my life into your hands." Your one prayer from a sincere and committed heart will make your present and future life, in this world and in the hereafter, heavenly and blessed for eternity.

Be a Man - 1

Review: We have seen in the previous article that David gave his son Solomon 4 instructions in 1 Kings 2:2-4 to stay right with God, properly fulfill his God given responsibilities, and be blessed and successful. The very first thing that David instructs Solomon to do is to be a man, i.e., always be strong and courageous to face whatever may come his way. Also, Solomon was never to ignore or forget the fact that he was God's chosen appointee to the post (1 Kings 10:9; 1 Chronicles 28:5-6; 29:1); therefore, he was God’s responsibility. This meant that he was never to be daunted by anyone or anything; he had always to be trusting that God is always with him to help, guide and keep him safe in all situations, and from everyone.

But God instructing him through his father, David, was also indirectly telling Solomon that though he was a God chosen and appointed King, like David was; still as had been for David, life would never be easy and soft for him either. Solomon will have to face all kinds of situations and will be thoroughly tested for fulfilling his God given responsibilities. The only way to overcome the situations that surely will come his way was to not only be willing to face them bravely in God’s strength, but to also keep preparing himself, physically, mentally, as well as spiritually for them, under God’s guidance. If he were to start with a negative or a defeatist mentality, feeling overwhelmed; or if he had a casual and uncaring attitude towards his responsibilities, a tendency of taking things lightly, then he would never be able to accomplish anything.

Similarly, God’s children, for living the Christian life and faith, growing and maturing in it, should always believe that we are God’s responsibility and can do all things through Christ who strengthens us (Philippians 4:13). This also requires not only an anticipation and willingness to face all kinds of situations and problems bravely, but also a preparation for them, and resolute laboring to be ready for the various possibilities that may occur. For helping His children anticipate, prepare, and be ready for the situations, God has given His Holy Spirit to every Born-Again Christian Believer (John 14:16, 17, 26). Quite unlike the unBiblical doctrine preached and taught by some denominations, Biblically speaking, God the Holy Spirit spontaneously comes to reside in the Christian Believer from the very moment of his believing in the Lord and being saved (Ephesians 1:13-14).

Christian life and living is not a life of sitting back and taking things easy. Being Born-Again or saved by coming into faith in the Lord Jesus, is not the completion, but only the first step into a new life. In this new life, all the old things have to change, new things have to be learnt, lived, and followed. It has to be a life lived not for self, or for self-gratification, but for the Lord Jesus (2 Corinthians 5:15, 17). Biblical passages, e.g., 1 Corinthians 3:1-3, Hebrews 5:12, Ephesians 4:13-15, 1 Peter 2:1-2 speak of this growth and maturity that is expected in a Christian Believer’s life after coming into faith. A child of God has to not only grow physically, but spiritually as well.

Many people, whether Believers or not, live with a grumbling and defeatist attitude about everything. They are always feeling overwhelmed, are always complaining and grumbling about anything and everything in their lives; and therefore, they can never achieve anything. It is only when we learn to trust God for everything, that we can believe that God will help us go through everything and accomplish everything (2 Corinthians 12:9; Philippians 1:6). And then we can live an overcoming and achieving life, have the blessings of God and be successful in accomplishing all that God wants us to do, and has empowered us for.

If you have not yet accepted the discipleship of the Lord, make your decision in favor of the Lord Jesus now to ensure your eternal life and heavenly blessings. Where there is obedience to the Lord, where there is respect and obedience to His Word, there is also the blessing and protection of the Lord. Repenting of your sins, and asking the Lord Jesus for forgiveness of your sins, voluntarily and sincerely, surrendering yourself to Him - is the only way to salvation and heavenly life.

Introduction – 1

From today we are starting a new series on learning to lead a blessed and successful life with the help, wisdom and guidance of God, through being obedient to Him and His Word. This life begins with voluntarily coming to faith in His Son the Lord Jesus Christ, voluntarily accepting Him as our Savior and being saved i.e., Being Born-Again. To live this life, from the moment we are saved, God the Holy Spirit is given to us. From then, throughout our lives, the Holy Spirit lives in every Christian Believer, as our helper, guide, and the source of power for this wonderful life. This life and divine power, along with salvation, can only be received as a gift from God, by His grace; they can never be earned by any works. But receiving a gift is one thing, understanding and properly utilizing it is quite another. Unless we understand about the gift and its proper utilization, we cannot be benefitted by it.

This series is based upon the instructions given by King David to his son Solomon, after appointing him as his successor, as the king of Israel. We will consider David’s instructions to Solomon under four main headings. But while expounding upon each heading, we will also have and consider the matter through other sub-headings. The subject matter will mainly be presented and expounded not from an ancient historical perspective of the Kings of Israel, but from our present-day need and perspective of the perilous end-times that we are living through. We will be taking cue from David’s instructions to Solomon, and learn about them from God’s Word the Bible. We will learn that as Born-Again Christian Believers what do we need to do to live a life pleasing to the Lord God. We will evaluate ourselves and see where we may have faltered in doing this. We will examine ourselves to check if we have been waylaid and misguided by Satan into something wrong, into some unBiblical belief or doctrine? And, by learning these, we  will rectify our walk with God, come back on to the right path, so that even through the problems and persecutions, we may be blessed and successful in our lives.

Our lead portion for this series will be 1 Kings 2:2-4, where King David, before his death, is instructing his young son, Solomon. David made Solomon as King of Israel in the will of God (1 Kings 1:47-48; 1 Chronicles 28:5), and even the Gentile rulers like King Hiram and the Queen of Sheba acknowledged this (2 Chronicles 2:11-12; 9:8). The theme and matter of David’s instructions to Solomon is about how to live a godly life, to grow and prosper in God's favor, and thereby be blessed, safe and successful in his God given responsibility, i.e., reign over Israel and keep them safe and prosperous in the fear of God.

This brings before us something very important which we should all very seriously ponder over and always bear in mind – being the chosen of God, having God’s favor, receiving a God given status and responsibilities, is no guarantee of life being easy, safe, and secure for God’s people. Satan will always keep trying to mislead and harm us (2 Corinthians 11:3; 1 Peter 5:8). All Christian Believers will always suffer persecution and problems in this world (John 16:33; Philippians 1:29; 2 Timothy 3:12). Christian Believers can never take life for granted, sit back and enjoy. Rather, they must always be “working out their salvation” (Philippians 2:12) – not working for their salvation; but, having been saved by coming to faith in the Lord Jesus and by the grace of God, they should always be demonstrating their saved life, through their life and works. We will continue this Introduction further, in the next article as well.

 Christian Faith & Discipleship – 21

English Translation

Christian Believer – Always With the Lord (2)

In the previous article, we began to consider the three things given in Mark 3:14-15 by the Lord, and ordained for His disciples; and which, even today, are the purpose for the true Christian Believers for being the Lord's disciples. From the last article we have been considering the first of these three things, to remain with the Lord, and seen its first part. We have seen that remaining with the Lord is the safety and security of the Christian Believer, that is where they are safe from the satanic ploys and harms; and can live a life useful for the Lord, be blessed. Today, we will see some more about this first thing, and understand further the importance of remaining with the Lord.

There are other benefits as well of being with the Lord. The Lord has said, “Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light."” (Matthew 11:28-30). The ‘yoke’ is that piece of equipment whose front part the farmers put across the necks of two bullocks, to bind them together, and the hind part has the pointed metal tip to plough the fields. The top part, across the necks, is controlled by the farmer to guide and control the bullocks properly while ploughing. In this invitation of Matthew 11:28-30, the Lord Jesus is expressing the desire that His Believer come out of the heavy yoke of sin and worldliness, and join Him, be yoked with Him in His light yoke, travel the rest of the life journey along with the Lord, so that the Lord can help him all along the way. If the Christian Believer stays with the Lord, remains yoked with Him then the Lord will continue to give him peace, guidance, solutions, and help in all things throughout life’s journey. The Believer will face problems only if he decides to unyoke himself and either get yoked back with the heavy yoke of sin and worldliness - a yoke in which the Lord Jesus can never be with him; or the Believer decides to do things in his way, through his own strength, wisdom, and efforts, without taking the help of the Lord.

That is why the Lord said to His disciples, “Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in Me. I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing” (John 15:4-5). So long as we are joined with the Lord, we will continue to receive from Him the life-giving strength, wisdom, and discernment to do things. But the moment we decide to trust in our own strength, wisdom, and discernment, in our own abilities, if we walk and work according to what seems right to us or what some other person tells us to do, instead of what the Lord instructs us to do, we will start falling into difficulties and problems, we will have to face frustrations and disappointments. When we walk and do according to what the Lord says, then as happened for the Israelites, the insurmountable problem of crossing the Red Sea will become possible and easy (Exodus chapter 14); but without the help and guidance of the Lord, even the seemingly easy and ordinary thing will become a cause of a heavy defeat, as happened with Joshua and the Israelites at Ai (Joshua chapter 7).

Look up the life of any Prophet, Apostle, or person of God, in either the Old or the New Testament, and you will find this in all of them - as long as they carried out their ministry in the guidance of the Lord, through the strength and wisdom of the Lord, they always remained victorious over every situation, everything. But if they started to do things according to their own will or wisdom, or under guidance of any other person, eventually they suffered heavy loss and defeats; all their works, abilities, and cleverness failed, nothing remained stable and fruitful in their lives. The Lord has promised to give us the right guidance “I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will guide you with My eye” (Psalms 32:8). It is for this reason that the Lord wants that His disciples should first and foremost learn the lesson of being with Him, learning from Him, and should not trust in their own wisdom and ways of doing things, only then will they be successful in all that they do “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, And lean not on your own understanding; In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He shall direct your paths” (Proverbs 3:5-6). As a Born-Again Believer, we need to learn to patiently be with Him and walk with Him - neither try to run ahead of Him, nor be lethargic and tardy and lag behind in the pace He sets for us. To be useful and fruitful for the Lord, and be blessed in his life by the Lord, the Christian Believer has to first learn to be with the Lord; not to instruct the Lord about things, but to be instructed by the Lord for everything. Only then will that Believer grow in His Christian life, become mature, effective, and fruitful for the Lord.

Therefore, if so far you have been living your life in the name of the Lord, but doing according to your own will, thoughts, desires, and abilities, or according to the guidance of some other person(s), then it is absolutely necessary that you effect a radical change in your outlook and life. If you are still thinking of yourself as being a Christian, because of being born in a particular family and having fulfilled the religious rites and rituals prescribed under your religion or denomination since your childhood, then you too need to come out of your misunderstanding of Biblical facts and start understanding and living according to what the Word of God says, instead of what any denominational creed says or teaches. Make the necessary corrections in your life now while you have the time and opportunity; lest by the time you realize your mistake, it is too late to do anything about it.

If you are still not Born Again, have not obtained salvation, or have not asked the Lord Jesus for forgiveness for your sins, then you have the opportunity to do so right now. A short prayer said voluntarily with a sincere heart, with heartfelt repentance for your sins, and a fully submissive attitude, “Lord Jesus, I confess that I have disobeyed You, and have knowingly or unknowingly, in mind, in thought, in attitude, and in deeds, committed sins. I believe that you have fully borne the punishment of my sins by your sacrifice on the cross, and have paid the full price of those sins for all eternity. Please forgive my sins, change my heart and mind towards you, and make me your disciple, take me with you." God longs for your company and wants to see you blessed, but to make this possible, is your personal decision. Will you not say this prayer now, while you have the time and opportunity to do so - the decision is yours.
