मसीही जीवन के चार स्तम्भ - 1 - वचन (7) 

पिछले लेख में हमने देखा था कि शैतान, उसके दूतों, और उसकी युक्तियों पर विजयी रहने के लिए, हमें परमेश्वर के वचन बाइबल का उपयोग करना है, जैसा कि प्रभु यीशु ने अपनी परीक्षाओं के उदाहरण के द्वारा हमें दिखाया और सिखाया है साथ ही हमने पिछले लेख में यह भी देखा था कि उसके बच्चों, अर्थात वास्तव में नया-जन्म पाए हुए मसीही विश्वासियों, प्रभु यीशु के सच्चे शिष्यों की सुरक्षा के लिए, परमेश्वर ने उन्हें आत्मिक हथियार या कवच भी दिया है (इफिसियों 6:13-17)। इन हथियारों में, एक को छोड़ कर बाकी सभी हथियार विश्वासी के बचाव, उसे सुरक्षित रखने के लिए हैं। इस कवच में केवल एक ही हथियार ऐसा है जिसे वार करने के लिए प्रयोग किया जा सकता है, वह है परमेश्वर का वचन, जिसे “आत्मा की तलवार” भी कहा गया है। तलवार को प्रभावी रीति से प्रयोग करने के लिए, उसे ठीक से  पकड़ना और चलाना भी आना चाहिए, अन्यथा वह व्यर्थ है। तलवार को हाथ से पकड़ा जाता है, और पकड़ जितनी मजबूत होगी, उसे उतने बेहतर और प्रभावी रीती से उपयोग किया जा सकेगा। आज हम इसी उदाहरण के द्वारा सीखना आरम्भ करेंगे कि अपने जीवनों में और प्रभु की सेवकाई तथा महिमा के लिए, परमेश्वर के वचन का प्रभावी उपयोग कैसे किया जा सकता है।

 

हाथ, हथेली और उसके साथ एक विशिष्ट रीति से जुड़ी हुई चार उँगलियों तथा एक अँगूठे से मिलकर बनता है, जो इसे एक अनुपम और बहुत प्रभावी अँग बनाते हैं। अपनी कार्यकुशलता और उपयोगिता में, मानव हाथ, अन्य किसी भी प्राणी के हाथ से भिन्न और उत्तम है; संसार के किसी भी जीव के हाथ से इसकी रचना और कार्य क्षमता कहीं अधिक उत्तम है। “The Navigators” नामक एक परमेश्वर का वचन सिखाने वाली एक संस्था है, और वे मानव हाथ के उदाहरण से भी परमेश्वर के वचन को सीखने का तरीका बताते हैं। यह लेख उनके इस उदाहरण पर आधारित है, और उसी से अनुकूलित किया गया है।

जिस तरह से तलवार के प्रभावी उपयोग के लिए, उसे चार उँगलियों और अँगूठे से दृढ़ता से थामना होता है; उसी प्रकार से परमेश्वर के वचन को अपने जीवनों में प्रभावी तरीके से उपयोग करने के लिए 5 बिन्दुओं को याद रखना अनिवार्य है। किसी एक ‘उंगली’ या ’बिन्दु’ में कमजोर पड़ना या उसे हटा देना, पकड़ को कमज़ोर बना देगा, और ‘तलवार’ का उपयोग होना, कम प्रभावी हो जाएगा। ये 5 ‘उँगलियाँ’ या बिन्दु हैं:

1. पाँचवी या छोटी उँगली - परमेश्वर का वचन सुनना: यह अनुमान लगाया गया है कि व्यक्ति जो सुनता है, उसका लगभग 5% ही ध्यान या याद रखने पाता है। जिस तरह से हाथ की सबसे छोटी उँगली, हाथ का सबसे कमज़ोर भाग है, उसी तरह से परमेश्वर के वचन को केवल सुनना, वचन को सीखने का सबसे कमज़ोर, लेकिन फिर भी प्रभावी भाग है; और परमेश्वर के वचन को सुनने के महत्व को अनदेखा नहीं किया जा सकता है, कम नहीं समझा जा सकता है। रोमियों 10:17 में लिखा है “सो विश्वास सुनने से, और सुनना मसीह के वचन से होता है।” पुराने नियम कि समयों में तथा कलीसिया के आरम्भिक दिनों में, जब अधिकाँश लोग अनपढ़ होते थे, और परमेश्वर के वचन की लिखित प्रतियाँ बहुत कम थीं, तब मौखिक प्रचार, शिक्षा, और सुनकर सीखना परमेश्वर के वचन के प्रचार और प्रसार के सबसे सामान्य तरीके थे। उन दिनों में मसीही विश्वासियों तथा कलीसियाओं की जिस प्रकार की बढ़ोतरी हुई थी, जो मुख्यतः परमेश्वर के वचन के बोले और सुने जाने के द्वारा थी, वैसी बढ़ोतरी फिर कभी नहीं हुई।

परमेश्वर के वचन को सुनना मात्र ही श्रोताओं में एक गम्भीर, गहरा, और जीवन बदलने वाला प्रभाव ला सकता है, उन्हें पश्चाताप के लिए कायल कर सकता है, जैसे हम प्रेरितों 2 अध्याय में पतरस द्वारा किए गए प्रचार के द्वारा देखते हैं। हम इसे नहेम्याह के समय में सामूहिक रूप में वचन के पढ़े और सुने जाने से नहेम्याह 8:1-13 में देखते हैं, “तब नहेम्याह जो अधिपति था, और एज्रा जो याजक और शास्त्री था, और जो लेवीय लोगों को समझा रहे थे, उन्होंने सब लोगों से कहा, आज का दिन तुम्हारे परमेश्वर यहोवा के लिये पवित्र है; इसलिये विलाप न करो और न रोओ। क्योंकि सब लोग व्यवस्था के वचन सुनकर रोते रहे” (नहेम्याह 8:9)। और इसी प्रकार से, व्यक्तिगत रीति से वचन के पढ़े और सुने जाने के द्वारा राजा योशिय्याह के पश्चाताप को, 2 इतिहास 34 अध्याय में देखते हैं, “व्यवस्था की वे बातें सुन कर राजा ने अपने वस्त्र फाढ़े। कि तुम जा कर मेरी ओर से और इस्राएल और यहूदा में रहने वालों की ओर से इस पाई हुई पुस्तक के वचनों के विष्य यहोवा से पूछो; क्योंकि यहोवा की बड़ी ही जलजलाहट हम पर इसलिये भड़की है कि हमारे पुरखाओं ने यहोवा का वचन नहीं माना, और इस पुस्तक में लिखी हुई सब आज्ञाओं का पालन नहीं किया” (2 इतिहास 34:19, 21)।

2. चौथी उँगली या अनामिका - परमेश्वर का वचन पढ़ना: यह अनुमान लगाया गया है कि व्यक्ति जो पढ़ता है, उसका लगभग 15% ध्यान में या याद रख लेता है। परमेश्वर के वचन का प्रार्थना के साथ नियमित और योजनाबद्ध पढ़ना, पढ़ने वाले को परमेश्वर के वचन की बातों का एक चित्र प्रदान कर देता है, और उसे एक सामान्य सा विचार प्रदान कर देता है कि कहाँ पर क्या कहा गया है। साथ ही यह व्यक्ति के परमेश्वर के साथ शान्त होकर समय बिताने में भी सहायक होता है। परमेश्वर के वचन को पढ़ना व्यक्ति के आत्मिक स्वच्छ किए जाने का भी काम करता है। प्रभु यीशु अपनी दुल्हन, अर्थात अपनी कलीसिया, वास्तव में नया-जन्म पाए हुए लोगों को वचन के स्नान के द्वारा पवित्र और शुद्ध कर रहा है (इफिसियों 5:26)। परमेश्वर के वचन को पढ़ने, सुनने, और पालन करने से व्यक्ति आशीषित भी होता है “धन्य है वह जो इस भविष्यद्वाणी के वचन को पढ़ता है, और वे जो सुनते हैं और इस में लिखी हुई बातों को मानते हैं, क्योंकि समय निकट आया है” (प्रकाशितवाक्य 1:3)। पुराने नियम में, व्यवस्था की पुस्तक का सार्वजनिक पढ़े जाने की आज्ञा दी गई थी, ताकि लोग सीखें और परमेश्वर का भय मानें (निर्गमन 24:7; व्यवस्थाविवरण 31:11-13; 2 इतिहास 34:30)। यिर्मयाह ने निर्देश दिया कि बेबीलोन के विरुद्ध भविष्यवाणी को पढ़ा और सुना जाए (यिर्मयाह 51:61)। यहूदियों के आराधनालयों में पवित्रशास्त्र का पढ़ा जाना, परमेश्वर की उपासना का एक नियमित भाग होता था (प्रेरितों 13:15)। प्रेरितों द्वारा कलीसियाओं को लिखी गई पत्रियाँ, आस-पास की अन्य कलीसियाओं में भी पढ़कर सुनाई जाती थीं (कुलुस्सियों 4:16; 1 थिस्सलुनीकियों 5:27)।

तो, परमेश्वर के वचन को सुनना, तथा पढ़ना दोनों ही ऐसे उचित और आवश्यक अभ्यास हैं जिन्हें मसीही विश्वासी को नियमित करते रहना चाहिए, ताकि परमेश्वर के वचन को प्रभावी रीति से सीख सके और उसका उपयोग कर सके। अगले लेख में हम यहाँ से आगे बढ़ेंगे, और हाथ के उदाहरण के शेष भागों को देखेंगे।

   

यदि आपने प्रभु की शिष्यता को अभी तक स्वीकार नहीं किया है, तो अपने अनन्त जीवन और स्वर्गीय आशीषों को सुनिश्चित करने के लिए अभी प्रभु यीशु के पक्ष में अपना निर्णय कर लीजिए। जहाँ प्रभु की आज्ञाकारिता है, उसके वचन की बातों का आदर और पालन है, वहाँ प्रभु की आशीष और सुरक्षा भी है। प्रभु यीशु से अपने पापों के लिए क्षमा माँगकर, स्वेच्छा से तथा सच्चे मन से अपने आप को उसकी अधीनता में समर्पित कर दीजिए - उद्धार और स्वर्गीय जीवन का यही एकमात्र मार्ग है। आपको स्वेच्छा और सच्चे मन से प्रभु यीशु मसीह से केवल एक छोटी प्रार्थना करनी है, और साथ ही अपना जीवन उसे पूर्णतः समर्पित करना है। आप यह प्रार्थना और समर्पण कुछ इस प्रकार से भी कर सकते हैं, “प्रभु यीशु, मैं अपने पापों के लिए पश्चातापी हूँ, उनके लिए आप से क्षमा माँगता हूँ। मैं आपका धन्यवाद करता हूँ कि आपने मेरे पापों की क्षमा और समाधान के लिए उन पापों को अपने ऊपर लिया, उनके कारण मेरे स्थान पर क्रूस की मृत्यु सही, गाड़े गए, और मेरे उद्धार के लिए आप तीसरे दिन जी भी उठे, और आज जीवित प्रभु परमेश्वर हैं। कृपया मुझे और मेरे पापों को क्षमा करें, मुझे अपनी शरण में लें, और मुझे अपना शिष्य बना लें। मैं अपना जीवन आप के हाथों में समर्पित करता हूँ।” सच्चे और समर्पित मन से की गई आपकी एक प्रार्थना आपके वर्तमान तथा भविष्य को, इस लोक के और परलोक के जीवन को, अनन्तकाल के लिए स्वर्गीय एवं आशीषित बना देगी।

Things Related to Christian Living – 14

The Four Pillars of Christian Living - 1 - Word (7)

In the last article we have seen that we need to utilize God’s Word, the Bible, to overcome Satan, his messengers, and his devices, as has been shown to us by the Lord Jesus through His example, when He was tempted by Satan. We also saw in the last article that for the safety of His children, the truly Born-Again Christian Believers, the true disciples of the Lord Jesus, God has given them spiritual armor (Ephesians 6:13-17). In this armor, everything except one is for the Believer’s defense, i.e, to protect him and keep him safe. There is only one weapon of offense given in this armor, God’s Word, called the “Sword of the Spirit.” To use a sword effectively, one must know how to hold and handle it properly, else it will be of no use. The sword is held with the hand, and the stronger the grip on the sword, the better and more effectively can it be used. Today we will begin to learn from this analogy, about effectively utilizing God’s Word, in our own lives, as well as for the ministry and glory of God. 

The hand comprises of the palm with four fingers and the thumb attached to it in a manner that makes it a unique and very effective organ. In its functions and efficacy, the human hand is unlike and superior to the hand of any other living creature; being far superior in design and working, than the hand of any other animal of the world. “The Navigators,” is an organization devoted to teaching God’s Word. This article is based upon and adopted from the analogy of the human hand used by “The Navigators” to illustrate and teach about learning God’s Word the Bible. 

As the sword is to be firmly grasped with the four fingers and the thumb; to use it effectively, so do we need to remember 5 points to learn and use God’s Word effectively in our lives. Weakening or loss of even one ‘finger’ or one “point” will weaken the hold, and render using the ‘sword’ less effective. These 5 “fingers” or “points” are:

1. The Fifth or Little Finger - Hear the Word of God: It is estimated that a person retains only about 5% of what he hears. As the fifth or little finger is the weakest part of the hand, similarly only hearing God's Word is the least, yet still an effective way of learning God’s Word; and the role of hearing God’s Word cannot be ignored or discounted. It says in Romans 10:17 “So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.” In the Old Testament times, and in the early days of the Church, when most of the population was illiterate, and written copies of God’s Word were few, oral preaching, teaching, and learning by hearing were the most common methods of communicating God’s Word. The kind of rapid and effective world-wide growth of the Believers and the Church that happened in those initial years, mainly through the spoken and heard Word of God, has never happened since then.

 

Just the listening of God’s Word can have a profound and life changing effect on the audience, bringing them to repentance, as we see from the preaching of Peter in Acts chapter 2. We also see this from the public reading done at the time of Nehemiah in Nehemiah 8:1-13, “And Nehemiah, who was the governor, Ezra the priest and scribe, and the Levites who taught the people said to all the people, "This day is holy to the Lord your God; do not mourn nor weep." For all the people wept, when they heard the words of the Law” (Nehemiah 8:9). And similarly the effect of the personal hearing of God’s Word, in the time of King Josiah in his repentance, given in 2 Chronicles 34, “Thus it happened, when the king heard the words of the Law, that he tore his clothes. [and said] Go, inquire of the Lord for me, and for those who are left in Israel and Judah, concerning the words of the book that is found; for great is the wrath of the Lord that is poured out on us, because our fathers have not kept the word of the Lord, to do according to all that is written in this book.” (2 Chronicles 34:19, 21).

2. The Fourth or Ring Finger - Read the Word of God: About 15% of what is read is estimated to be retained by a person. The prayerful, regular, and systematic reading of God’s Word gives the readers an overview about God’s Word, and a general idea of what is written where in the Bible. This reading also helps in the person’s quiet time with the Lord. Reading God’s Word also has a cleansing effect on the person. The Lord Jesus is preparing His Bride, i.e., the Church, the truly Born-Again Christian Believers, through sanctifying and cleaning it with His Word (Ephesians 5:26). Reading, hearing, and obeying God’s Word makes a person blessed “Blessed is he who reads and those who hear the words of this prophecy, and keep those things which are written in it; for the time is near” (Revelation 1:3). In the Old Testament, the Book of the Law was meant to be read publically for the people to learn and fear the Lord (Exodus 24:7; Deuteronomy 31:11-13; 2 Chronicles 34:30). Jeremiah instructed that the words of his prophecy against Babylon be read and heard (Jeremiah 51:61). Reading the Scriptures was a regular part of God’s worship in the Synagogues of the Jews (Acts 13:15). The letters written by the Apostles to the various churches were meant to be read around in all the nearby churches (Colossians 4:16; 1 Thessalonians 5:27). 

So, both the hearing and reading of God’s Word are worthy practices that every Christian Believer needs to be doing regularly, to be able effectively learn and utilize God’s Word. We will carry on from here in the next article and consider the remaining parts of the hand analogy.

Where there is obedience to the Lord, where there is respect and obedience to His Word, there is also the blessing and protection of the Lord. Repenting of your sins, and asking the Lord Jesus for forgiveness of your sins, voluntarily and sincerely, surrendering yourself to Him - is the only way to salvation and heavenly life. You only have to say a short but sincere prayer to the Lord Jesus Christ willingly and with a penitent heart, and at the same time completely commit and submit your life to Him. You can also make this prayer and submission in words something like, “Lord Jesus, I am sorry for my sins and repent of them. I thank you for taking my sins upon yourself, paying for them through your life.  Because of them you died on the cross in my place, were buried, and you rose again from the grave on the third day for my salvation, and today you are the living Lord God and have freely provided to me the forgiveness, and redemption from my sins, through faith in you. Please forgive my sins, take me under your care, and make me your disciple. I submit my life into your hands." Your one prayer from a sincere and committed heart will make your present and future life, in this world and in the hereafter, heavenly and blessed for eternity.

इब्रानियों 6:1-2 में दी गई छः आरम्भिक बातों में से चौथी बात, “हाथ रखना” पर ज़ारी हमारे इस अध्ययन में, हम किसी के द्वारा किसी पर हाथ रखे जाने, या किसी की ओर हाथ बढ़ाने के अर्थ और अभिप्रायों पर विचार कर रहे हैं, उन का विश्लेषण कर रहे हैं। हमने बाइबल के, तथा सामान्य दैनिक जीवन के उदाहरणों के द्वारा देखा है कि हाथ रखना व्यक्ति के प्रति एकता और मिलाप रखने, उस के साथ खड़े रहने, उसे शान्ति और सान्त्वना देने का भी सूचक है। एक गलत शिक्षा भी है, जिस का प्रचार कुछ समुदायों और डिनॉमिनेशनों के द्वारा बड़ा बल दे कर किया जाता है, कि पवित्र आत्मा प्रेरितों या कलीसिया के अगुवों के हाथ रखने के द्वारा दिया जाता है। ये समुदाय और डिनॉमिनेशन अपनी इस शिक्षा के लिए प्रेरितों 8:17; 9:17; 19:6 को आधार बनाते हैं। यद्यपि इन तीनों पदों में हम देखते हैं कि हाथ रखने के द्वारा पवित्र आत्मा दिया गया, परन्तु ये पद यह नहीं सिखाते हैं कि पवित्र आत्मा इस प्रकार से प्राप्त किया जाता है। पिछले दो लेखों में हमने अन्यजातियों के पवित्र आत्मा पाने (प्रेरितों 10 और 11 अध्याय) और सामरियों के पवित्र आत्मा पाने (प्रेरितों 8:17) से देखा था कि सब के सामने, खुले रूप में, यरूशलेम की कलीसिया के प्रेरितों की उपस्थिति में पवित्र आत्मा का दिया जाना, परमेश्वर की और से इस बात की पुष्टि थी कि एकमात्र सार्वभौमिक कलीसिया के लिए और आने वाले समयों तथा सदा काल के लिए, अन्यजाति तथा सामरी मसीही विश्वासी परमेश्वर के परिवार का अँग हैं, प्रभु यीशु की कलीसिया के सदस्य हैं, और उन के साथ किसी भी तरह का कोई भेद-भाव या भिन्नता नहीं है। आज हम इसी विषय को और आगे बढ़ाएंगे, और शेष दोनों पदों, प्रेरितों 9:17 और 19:6 पर विचार तथा विश्लेषण करेंगे।

इन पदों में लिखा है, “तब हनन्याह उठ कर उस घर में गया, और उस पर अपना हाथ रखकर कहा, हे भाई शाऊल, प्रभु, अर्थात यीशु, जो उस रास्ते में, जिस से तू आया तुझे दिखाई दिया था, उसी ने मुझे भेजा है, कि तू फिर दृष्टि पाए और पवित्र आत्मा से परिपूर्ण हो जाए” (प्रेरितों 9:17), और “और जब पौलुस ने उन पर हाथ रखे, तो उन पर पवित्र आत्मा उतरा, और वे भिन्न-भिन्न भाषा बोलने और भविष्यवाणी करने लगे” (प्रेरितों 19:6)। ये दोनों ही पद प्रेरित पौलुस  की सेवकाई से सम्बन्धित हैं। पहला वाला उस के प्रभु यीशु से दमिश्क की मार्ग पर मिलने से सम्बन्धित है, और दूसरा वाला पवित्र आत्मा के निर्देशों के अनुसार अन्यजातियों के मध्य में उस की सेवकाई से सम्बन्धित है। जैसा कि हम जानते हैं, पौलुस, जिसे पहले शाऊल कहते थे, एक प्रशिक्षित फरीसी था, और प्रभु परमेश्वर की सेवा करने के लिए बहुत उत्साही था, परन्तु अधिकाँश अन्य फरीसियों के समान, वह भी यीशु को प्रतिज्ञा किया हुआ मसीह स्वीकार नहीं करता था; इसी लिए वह स्थान-स्थान पर जा कर मसीही विश्वासियों को सताता था, जब तक कि उस का सामना प्रभु से नहीं हो गया और उस का जीवन हमेशा के लिए बदल नहीं गया (प्रेरितों 26:4-19)।

क्योंकि पौलुस के द्वारा मसीही विश्वासियों का सताया जाना सभी को पता था, इस लिए, स्वाभाविक रीति से, जब परमेश्वर ने हनन्याह से जा कर पौलुस से बात करने के लिए कहा, तो वह तैयार नहीं हुआ, जा कर पौलुस से मिलने से बचने के लिए बातें बनाने लगा। लेकिन जब परमेश्वर ने उसे तैयार कर लिया, तो हनन्याह ने अपनी सारी आपत्तियों और पौलुस के विषय अपने प्रतिरोधों को छोड़ दिया, और खुले मन से उस से मिलने जाने के लिए तैयार हो गया। उस से मिलने पर हनन्याह ने उसे “हे भाई शाऊल” कह कर संबोधित किया, उस पर हाथ रखे, सप्रेम उसे परमेश्वर का सन्देश दिया, और विश्वासियों की सहभागिता में उस का स्वागत किया (प्रेरितों 9:10-17)। जब हम केवल एक ही पद, पद 17 को नहीं, वरन पूरी घटना, और इस पद के सन्दर्भ को देखते हैं, तो यह प्रकट है कि हनन्याह वहाँ पौलुस  के पास परमेश्वर का सन्देश पहुँचाने और विश्वासियों की सहभागिता में उस का स्वागत करने के लिए आया था, जिस का प्रमाण उसे पवित्र आत्मा दिया जाना था। इसलिए पौलुस  के साथ एकता और मिलाप को व्यक्त करने के लिए, उस के साथ खड़े होने और उसे कलीसिया का एक अँग स्वीकार करने को व्यक्त करने के लिए, हनन्याह ने पौलुस पर हाथ रखा। पौलुस पहले ही मसीही विश्वास में आ चुका था, जो उस के द्वारा यीशु से साक्षात्कार होने के बाद यीशु को प्रभु कह कर संबोधित करने, उस की आज्ञा का पालन करने, और प्रभु द्वारा उसे आगे के निर्देश दिए जाने के लिए प्रतीक्षा करने को राज़ी होने (प्रेरितों 9:4-6), आदि से पता चलता है। लेकिन एक बार फिर, जैसा कि हमने पिछले लेख में देखा था, विश्वास में आने पर भी उसे पवित्र आत्मा का नहीं दिया जाना, परमेश्वर द्वारा संभवतः एक उद्देश्य से किया गया था। जब हनन्याह ने, कलीसिया की ओर से, पौलुस के प्रति एकता, मिलाप, और सहभागिता को प्रदर्शित किया, और कलीसिया में उस का स्वागत किया, उसी समय परमेश्वर ने पौलुस को पवित्र आत्मा भी दे दिया, जिसका प्रमाण था पौलुस का विश्वासियों के साथ संगति करना, उस का जीवन परिवर्तित हो जाना, और उसके द्वारा तुरन्त ही प्रभु यीशु के परमेश्वर का पुत्र होने का प्रचार करना आरम्भ करना (प्रेरितों 9:19-20), और यरूशलेम में प्रेरितों द्वारा उसे और उस की सेवकाई को स्वीकार करना (प्रेरितों 9:27-29) था।

हाथ रखने से सम्बन्धित इस श्रृंखला के आरंभ में, हमने उल्लेख किया था कि कुछ समुदायों और डिनॉमिनेशनों के लिए, वाक्यांश “हाथ रखना” का अर्थ केवल नया-जन्म पाए हुए मसीही विश्वासी को बपतिस्मा देने के बाद की गई एक रस्म होता है, और वे इसे अनिवार्य तथा बपतिस्मे को पूरा करने वाली प्रक्रिया मानते हैं। अगले लेख में हम देखेंगे कि परमेश्वर का वचन इस के बारे में क्या कहता है।

Laying on of Hands - 12

 

In our ongoing study on the “Laying on of hands,” which is the fourth of the six elementary principles given in Hebrews 6:1-2, we are analyzing and pondering upon the meaning and implications related to the act of laying on of hands, or, extending a hand, by someone towards another. We have seen from Biblical usage as well as in day-to-day life activities that this can also mean or convey being in unity and solidarity with that person, as well as assuring him of standing with him, and comforting him for anything that may be disturbing him. There is also a false teaching, quite emphatically given by some sects and denominations, that the Holy Spirit is given through the laying on of hands by the Apostles or Church Elders. These sects and denominations base their teaching on Acts 8:17; 9:17; 19:6. In these three verses, though we do find the Holy Spirit being given by the laying on of hands, but these verses do not teach that this is how the Holy Spirit is received. In the previous two articles we have seen, through the example of the Gentiles receiving the Holy Spirit (Acts chapters 10 and 11) and the Samaritans receiving the Holy Spirit (Acts 18:17), that giving of the Holy Spirit, publicly, and in presence of the Apostles from the Church in Jerusalem, was an acknowledgement from God, for the whole universal Church and for all times to come, that the Gentile and the Samaritan Believers are also part of God’s family, members of the Church of the Lord Jesus, without any differentiation of any kind. Today we will carry on, on this same theme, and analyze the other two verses, i.e., Acts 9:17 and 19:6.

These verses state: “And Ananias went his way and entered the house; and laying his hands on him he said, ‘Brother Saul, the Lord Jesus, who appeared to you on the road as you came, has sent me that you may receive your sight and be filled with the Holy Spirit.” (Acts 9:17) and “And when Paul had laid hands on them, the Holy Spirit came upon them, and they spoke with tongues and prophesied” (Acts 19:6). Both these verses are related to the ministry of the Apostle Paul; the first one is related to the time of his conversion after his meeting the Lord Jesus on the road to Damascus; and the second one is related to Paul’s ministry amongst the Gentiles, under the directions of the Holy Spirit. As we know, Paul, initially known as Saul, was a learned Pharisee and very zealous for serving the Lord God, but like most of the other Pharisees, he too did not accept Jesus as the promised Messiah; therefore, he went around persecuting the followers of the Lord Jesus, till the Lord met him and his life changed forever (Acts 26:4-19).

Since Paul’s persecution of the followers of the Lord Jesus was well known, therefore, quite naturally, when God had asked Ananias to go and speak to Paul, he was unwilling and had tried to wriggle out of going and meeting Paul. But when convinced by God, Ananias dropped all his objections and apprehensions about Paul, and went to meet him with open arms. On meeting Paul, Ananias addressed him as “Brother Saul,” laid hands on him, lovingly conveyed God’s message to him, and accepted him into the fellowship of the Believers (Acts 9:10-17). As we look at not just the single verse, i.e., verse 17, but the whole episode, and the context of the verse, it is quite evident that Ananias had come to Paul to convey God’s message and welcome him into the fellowship of Believers, which would be evidenced by his receiving the Holy Spirit. So, as an expression of unity and solidarity with Paul, of standing with him and accepting him as part of the Church of the Lord, Ananias had placed his hands on him. Paul had already come into faith, having addressed Jesus as Lord after his encounter with Him, and being willing to obey Him, wait for the Lord to convey further instructions to him after some time (Acts 9:4-6). But once again, as we saw in the last episode, the granting of the Holy Spirit to Him on coming into faith was held back by God, for a purpose. As Ananias conveyed unity and solidarity with Paul on behalf of the church, and welcomed him into the Church, that is when God also gave the Holy Spirit to Paul, which was evidenced by Pauls’ fellowshipping with the Believers, his changed life, and his immediately starting to preach that Jesus is the Son of God (Acts 9:19-20), and the Apostles in Jerusalem also welcoming and accepting him and his ministry (Acts 9:27-29).

Paul was accepted in the Church as an Apostle (Acts 14:14; 1 Corinthians 9:1-2), and God gave him the ministry of taking the gospel to the Gentiles (Acts 9:15; Galatians 1:16). During one of his missionary journeys, in the region of Ephesus, Paul came across was a small group of twelve disciples, who were still the followers of John the Baptist (Acts 19:1-7). From Paul’s conversation with them (verses 2-5), it is evident that these were not Born-Again Christian Believers, but just the disciples of John. Through Paul’s ministering to them, they believed in the Lord Jesus, and were baptized in the Lord’s name, and then when Paul laid his hands on them, i.e. expressed unity and solidarity with them, they received the Holy Spirit. Once again, God made it evident through publicly giving the Holy Spirit to the followers of John the Baptist, that they too are welcome to join the family of God, the Church of the Lord Jesus, in the same manner as others are doing; and they too will be accepted without any differentiation of any kind.

As stated earlier, these three verse from Acts, i.e., Acts 8:17; 9:17; 19:6, are all ‘one-of-a-kind’ examples; never repeated in the whole of the New Testament, never used in the whole of the New Testament to preach, or illustrate that the Holy Spirit is received by the laying on of hands. These were just representative examples for the Apostles, and the Church Elders in the initial Church, to spread the word to other Churches to not differentiate any person in the Church of Christ because of his background. God taught and established to the initial Church and its leaders that in His eyes, everyone who repents of his sins and accepts Jesus as Lord and savior, becomes a member of God’s family, and is treated the same as everyone else. That the Holy Spirit is given on coming into faith in the Lord Jesus, was stated at the beginning of the Church in Peter’s sermon to the devout Jews (Acts 2:5, 38), then affirmed in Peter’s ministry to the Gentiles (Acts 11:17), and taught in the New Testament (Acts 19:2; Romans 8:9; 1 Corinthians 12;3; Galatians 3:2; Ephesians 1:13-14). Any preaching or teaching that contradicts this clear teaching of God’s Word regarding the giving of the Holy Spirit, is because of misinterpretation and misunderstanding the Word of God, and must be appropriately rectified to bring it in line with God’s word, instead of misusing it to give some unBiblical doctrine and preach it.

At the beginning of this series on the laying on of hands, we had mentioned that for some sects and denominations, the term “laying on of hands” only means something that is done after baptizing a Born-Again Christian Believer, and they consider doing this as the necessary and concluding part of baptism. In the next article we will see what God’s Word has to say about this practice.

If you have not yet accepted the discipleship of the Lord, make your decision in favor of the Lord Jesus now to ensure your eternal life and heavenly blessings. Where there is obedience to the Lord, where there is respect and obedience to His Word, there is also the blessing and protection of the Lord. Repenting of your sins, and asking the Lord Jesus for forgiveness of your sins, voluntarily and sincerely, surrendering yourself to Him - is the only way to salvation and heavenly life. You only have to say a short but sincere prayer to the Lord Jesus Christ willingly and with a penitent heart, and at the same time completely commit and submit your life to Him. You can also make this prayer and submission in words something like, “Lord Jesus, I am sorry for my sins and repent of them. I thank you for taking my sins upon yourself, paying for them through your life.  Because of them you died on the cross in my place, were buried, and you rose again from the grave on the third day for my salvation, and today you are the living Lord God and have freely provided to me the forgiveness, and redemption from my sins, through faith in you. Please forgive my sins, take me under your care, and make me your disciple. I submit my life into your hands." Your one prayer from a sincere and committed heart will make your present and future life, in this world and in the hereafter, heavenly and blessed for eternity.

ध्यान में रखने की एक और महत्वपूर्ण बात है कि, क्रूस पास चढ़ाए जाने से पहले प्रभु यीशु ने अपने अनुयायियों से वायदा किया था कि वह परमेश्वर पिता से कह कर उन्हें पवित्र आत्मा प्रदान करवाएगा, जो हमेशा उन में रहेगा, और मसीही जीवन और सेवकाई से सम्बन्धित सभी बातें उन्हें सिखाएगा (यूहन्ना 14:16, 26)। अपने पुनरुत्थान के बाद, और स्वर्गारोहण के समय, न केवल प्रभु यीशु ने अपने शिष्यों को सारे सँसार के सभी जातियों और लोगों में सुसमाचार ले जाने की महान आज्ञा दी, वरन उन से वायदा भी किया कि वे पवित्र आत्मा प्राप्त करेंगे, उस की सामर्थ्य से परिपूर्ण होंगे, और उस के बाद ही वे सँसार भर में सुसमाचार प्रचार की सेवकाई के लिए निकलें (प्रेरितों 1:5, 8)। पवित्र आत्मा से सम्बन्धित ये वायदे प्रभु यीशु ने अपने अनुयायियों से किए थे, उन से जो उस के प्रति प्रतिबद्ध और समर्पित थे, अर्थात मसीही विश्वासी थे। और परमेश्वर का वचन यह दिखाता है कि जो प्रभु यीशु पर विश्वास लाता है, वह परमेश्वर की सन्तान, उस के परिवार का एक अंग बन जाता है (यूहन्ना 1:12-13)। दूसरे शब्दों में, परमेश्वर द्वारा किसी व्यक्ति को पवित्र आत्मा प्रदान करना, उस व्यक्ति का परमेश्वर की सन्तान होने, परमेश्वर के परिवार का एक अंग होने और प्रभु यीशु मसीह का विश्वासी होने का सूचक है। यह इसे भी दिखाता है कि व्यक्ति प्रभु यीशु की कलीसिया का, प्रभु की दुल्हन और देह का एक भाग है। अर्थात, परमेश्वर से पवित्र आत्मा प्राप्त करना, किसी व्यक्ति में पवित्र आत्मा की उपस्थिति होना, परमेश्वर की ओर से इस बात की पुष्टि करता है कि वह व्यक्ति परमेश्वर के परिवार का सदस्य है, सार्वभौमिक विश्व-व्यापी कलीसिया का एक अंग है, प्रभु यीशु की दुल्हन और देह है; उसे अन्य विश्वासियों से अलग नहीं रखा या देखा जा सकता है।

Laying on of Hands - 9

 

    In our study of the fourth elementary principle, “laying on of hands” given in Hebrews 6:1-2, we are at the point of analyzing and checking out a popular but false teaching associated with the “laying on of hands” emphatically preached and taught by some sects and denominations; i.e., the Holy Spirit is given by the laying on of hands by the Church Elders on to a person. This notion contradicts the clear Bible teaching that the Holy Spirit is automatically given by God to every truly Born-Again Christian Believer at the moment of his salvation. The Holy Spirit is neither given because of any works done by someone, nor through the mediation of any other human being. To receive the Holy Spirit, no one needs to do anything other than repent of sins, believe in the Lord Jesus being the savior, and submit themselves to Him to live in obedience to Him and His Word. Therefore, there is no need or necessity of the laying on of hands by anyone upon others to have them receive the Holy Spirit.

Those who preach and teach this wrong doctrine, base their contention on three verses from the book of Acts, i.e. Acts 8:17; 9:17; 19:6. Although these three verses do mention the Holy Spirit being received by those upon whom the Apostles and Church Elder had placed their hands, but the actual meaning and implication of this happening was not to show how to receive the Holy Spirit, but something quite different. To understand the actual meaning, we need to well understand keep in mind some important Biblical teachings and facts that have a direct bearing on interpreting these verses. Hence the necessity of restating what we have stated before in the earlier articles, to keep the memory about these important things fresh.

    Let us recapitulate, what we have learnt about the implications of laying on of hands in the recent articles: the act of someone laying on of hands on another, or extending hands towards another, in the Bible, as well as in our day-to-day life implies conveying a sense of unity and solidarity with the person, of assuring him of standing with him to support him, and helps to comfort people facing fearful or apprehensive situations. While three instances of the Holy Spirit being given by the placing of hands re given in the book of Acts, but this has never been repeated anywhere else in the rest of the New Testament, nor has doing this for receiving the Holy Spirt been taught at any place in the New Testament; not even at the three places in Acts, which mentions this happening. We had seen another important thing about the social situation at the initial time of the first Church, that from the perspective of the Jews, there were three categories of people, the Jews, the Gentiles, and the Samaritans; and then there were also some who were still the followers of John the Baptist, even though John had been martyred quite some time back. Another basic principle of the Christian Faith is that the Church, the world-wide congregation of the truly Born-Again Christian Believers, is the Bride, and the Body of Christ (Ephesians 5:25-30) and is one universal unit (Ephesians 2:13-22); there are no divisions and sects in it (1 Corinthians 12:13; Galatians 3:28; Ephesians 2:11-18; Colossians 3:11), and never can be. We need to keep all of these in mind in when coming to a proper understanding of the above mentioned three verses from Acts.

Another important thing to keep in mind is that before His crucifixion, the Lord Jesus had promised His disciples that He will ask God the Father to give them the Holy Spirit, who would permanently reside in them and would teach them all things pertaining to Christian living and ministry (John 14:16, 26). After His resurrection, and at the time of His ascension, the Lord Jesus had not only given His disciples the Great Commission of taking the gospel to all the nations of whole world, but had also promised to them that they would receive the Holy Spirit, be empowered by Him, and only then were they to go out into the world preaching the gospel (Acts 1:5, 8). These promises related to the Holy Spirit were made by the Lord Jesus to His disciples, to those who were committed to Him, i.e., to the Believers in the Lord Jesus. And God’s Word shows that those who believe in the Lord Jesus, become the children of God, part of His family (John 1:12-13). In other words, the giving of the Holy Spirit by God to a person, signified his being a child of God, a part of God’s family, being one in the fellowship of God’s children, and being a Believer in the Lord Jesus. This also signified being part of the Church of the Lord Jesus, the Bride and Body of the Lord Jesus. Thus, the receiving of the Holy Spirit from God, or the presence of the Holy Spirit in a person was an affirmation by God of the person being a member of His family, of being a part of the Universal Church, of the Bride and Body of the Lord Jesus; he cannot be seen as different from other Believers or kept away from the other Believers.

In the next article we will begin to build up to what the actual meaning of the three verses from Acts is, by analyzing them in light of what we have learnt about the implications of laying on of hands and about receiving the Holy Spirit.

I thank you for taking my sins upon yourself, paying for them through your life.  Because of them you died on the cross in my place, were buried, and you rose again from the grave on the third day for my salvation, and today you are the living Lord God and have freely provided to me the forgiveness, and redemption from my sins, through faith in you. Please forgive my sins, take me under your care, and make me your disciple. I submit my life into your hands." Your one prayer from a sincere and committed heart will make your present and future life, in this world and in the hereafter, heavenly and blessed for eternity.

Laying on of Hands - 6

 

We are presently studying the fourth of the six elementary principles stated in Hebrews 6:1-2, i.e., “laying on of hands.” There is a common understanding, especially amongst the members of some sects and denominations of the Christian Believers, that from the Biblical context, the term “laying on of hands” essentially means laying of hands by the elders of the Church or Assembly on the heads of those who have taken baptism, and is in a way, the completion of the baptism process. We have serially followed through the use of the phrase “laying on of hands” in the Bible, from Genesis onwards to the New Testament. We have seen that this phrase has been used throughout the Bible with various meaning; the most common use, both in the Old as well as the New Testament, being in the sense of taking hold of, or apprehending someone to cause him some kind of harm. Today we will continue with looking at Biblical examples of “laying on of hands” and begin considering how this term has been misused to generate a lot of confusion and mislead people into a false doctrine by some sects and denominations.

Some sects and denominations, very emphatically teach and preach that the Christian Believers receive the Holy Spirit through “laying on of hands” and they use some Bible verses, out of their context, to try to prove their point, but end up bringing a contradiction between their doctrine and what God’s Word teaches.

Before we go into considering this alleged meaning, i.e., of the Christian Believers receiving the Holy Spirit by laying on of hands, let us look at an instance one other use of this phrase. It is written in Revelation 1:17 “And when I saw Him, I fell at His feet as dead. But He laid His right hand on me, saying to me, "Do not be afraid; I am the First and the Last.” Here the Apostle John is writing about his seeing the Lord Jesus in His glorious heavenly majesty and form, and the effect it had on him – “I fell at His feet as dead.” The Lord Jesus then comforted and reassured John by laying His right hand on John and saying to him “Do not be afraid; I am the First and the Last.” Here we see another meaning, or use of laying on of hands – to comfort and reassure someone in his state of fear.

Now, coming to considering receiving the Holy Spirit through the laying on of hands. This is taught by some sects and denominations based on Acts 8:17; 9:17; 19:6. In these three verses we see that the Holy Spirit was given to those persons on whom a man of God laid his hand. But when we analyze these verses in their context and see what was being done, then it becomes apparent that the Holy Spirit was not given because of the physical act of laying of hand, but because of what the laying of hand signified or indicated for that instance.

In an earlier article, the third on this topic of laying hands, and published on 8th June, we had seen from Biblical examples, from the Old as well as the New Testaments, that one of the meanings of “laying on of hands” was to ordain or commission someone to carry out their God given work or ministry. It is evident that this ordination or commissioning does not happen because of the physical act of the leaders or elders touching or placing their hands on the person(s) going for the work or ministry; they could just as well have been sent out simply by praying and committing them into God’s care and safety. The placing of hands is a way of conveying an intimacy of fellowship with the person as well as assuring them of their support for the ministry they were being sent out. This aspect of reassurance we have seen from the example of Revelation 1:17 given above. To understand the aspect of support, consider another verse, Galatians 2:9 “and when James, Cephas, and John, who seemed to be pillars, perceived the grace that had been given to me, they gave me and Barnabas the right hand of fellowship, that we should go to the Gentiles and they to the circumcised.” Although the phrase “laying on of hands” is not written here, but the sense is conveyed through use of the phrase “they gave me and Barnabas the right hand of fellowship.” Implying that by extending hands towards Paul and Barnabas, James, Cephas, and John were assuring them of standing by them, of accepting and affirming their ministry, of being one-minded with them in the service of the Lord. So, giving or extending a hand of fellowship is meant to convey acceptance into the fellowship, and acceptance of the person’s ministry.

Therefore, we can understand that when the leaders and elders were ordaining or commissioning someone through praying and “laying on of hands,” they were commissioning or sending the person for their ministry with the assurance that they too are standing with them, are concerned about their welfare, and want to see them succeed in the ministry they are sending him out for. It was an assurance to the person being sent of the congregation of Believers standing with him; and an acknowledgement that just as the Lord Jesus has accepted him as one of His, similarly the leaders and the elders on behalf of the Church of the Lord are also accepting him as a part of the body or Church of the Lord. The person being ordained and commissioned by the leaders and elders is accepted as having been considered worthy by God to be used for God’s ministry.

In the next article we will apply this understanding of “laying on of hands” to the three verses from Acts that are misused to claim that the Holy Spirit is received by the laying on of hands.
