Teachings Related to the Gospel – 9

While considering Biblical teachings related to the gospel, we have seen that its two essential components are the teachings related to repentance from sins, and to believing in the gospel. True heartfelt repentance is evidenced by a change in the life and behavior of the person who repents, along with his developing a lasting and growing interest in studying God’s Word, and sharing the necessity of repentance from sins with others. We have considered some aspects of the change that comes in a repentant person, and have learnt that though it is God who necessarily wants to see the change happening, but the repentant person has to take the initiative in beginning the change in his life.

We have seen from Romans 12:1-2 that the Believer must come to God, voluntarily offer himself as a “living sacrifice” to God. When a person does that, God renews his mind, opens it to enable it to see, understand, and obey His Word and its truths, through the help of the Holy Spirit residing in every Believer from the moment of his salvation. The person has to now show his renewed mind through bringing about the related necessary changes in his life, and continually strive to live a life that glorifies God. In the last article we stopped at the point that many feel reluctant to do this, and are often very slow in implementing the necessary changes. This is because their unstated or unexpressed thoughts are that while they go through the rigorous efforts and exercise of changing their lives and giving up on things and pleasures of this world, it is God who gets all the glory; and apparently there is nothing in this whole exercise for them. Today we will look at what God has in store for the person who is serious in implementing the changes in his life and glorifying God through his changed life.

There is a commonly stated attribute of God, “God is no one’s debtor;” which although is not written in God’s Word, yet is quite evident from all that God does for His people. One good illustration of this is Mark 10:28-31; i.e., the Lord Jesus’s reply to Peter, when he asked him about what will they get in return for their having left everything for following Him “Then Peter began to say to Him, "See, we have left all and followed You." So, Jesus answered and said, "Assuredly, I say to you, there is no one who has left house or brothers or sisters or father or mother or wife or children or lands, for My sake and the gospel's, who shall not receive a hundredfold now in this time--houses and brothers and sisters and mothers and children and lands, with persecutions--and in the age to come, eternal life. But many who are first will be last, and the last first."” The Lord’s answer here, of a hundredfold here, now on earth, and eternal life in the time to come, should set at rest the troubled minds of those who think that they are making all the efforts and sacrifices, but all the glory is being given to God, and they are being left without anything.

But what God has in mind for those who glorify Him through their complete submission and unquestioning obedience to Him and His Word is something far greater, something that man can never imagine to achieve through any of his efforts. There are three components to what God has in mind for those who trust Him and step out in faith, to do God’s bidding. Firstly, God wants to live and be with them like a loving Father. Secondly, God wants to make this person complete and thoroughly prepared for every good work; make him mature so that he cannot be deceived by the trickery of men. Thirdly, God wants to conform them into the image of His Son, the Lord Jesus Christ.

We will start considering these three blessings one by one, along with their relevant Biblical references, from the next article.

If you have not yet accepted the discipleship of the Lord, make your decision in favor of the Lord Jesus now to ensure your eternal life and heavenly blessings. Where there is obedience to the Lord, where there is respect and obedience to His Word, there is also the blessing and protection of the Lord. Voluntarily repent of your sins and ask the Lord Jesus for forgiveness of your sins, voluntarily and sincerely surrender yourself to Him - this is the only way to salvation and heavenly life. You only have to say a short but sincere prayer to the Lord Jesus Christ willingly and with a penitent heart, and at the same time completely commit and submit your life to Him. You can also make this prayer and submission in words something like, “Lord Jesus, I am sorry for my sins and repent of them. I thank you for taking my sins upon yourself, paying for them through your life.  Because of them you died on the cross in my place, were buried, and you rose again from the grave on the third day for my salvation, and today you are the living Lord God and have freely provided to me the forgiveness, and redemption from my sins, through faith in you. Please forgive my sins, take me under your care, and make me your disciple. I submit my life into your hands." Your one prayer from a sincere and committed heart will make your present and future life, in this world and in the hereafter, heavenly and blessed for eternity.

Teachings Related to the Gospel – 8

So far in this series, we have seen that for their spiritual growth and maturity, the Christian Believers, and the Church, must be well versed in the Bible. Of the essential Biblical teachings that they should learn, know, and pass on to others, one category of teachings are the teachings related to the gospel; i.e., learning what the gospel actually is, according to the Bible; and the teachings related to repentance and believing in the gospel. Repentance exhibited by a person can be both true and heartfelt, or false just something meant to show to the world. The differentiating features between true and false repentance are the change in life that accompanies true repentance, along with the person developing and continuing in love for God’s Word, and having a desire to bring others into true repentance as well; these things are not seen with false repentance. In the recent articles we have been considering the various aspects of the change that happens in a person’s life on truly repenting; and in the last article we had seen about this from Romans 12:1-2. Today, we will see the necessity of this change, i.e., why does God so resolutely want to see this change happen in the lives of those who repent and believe in the gospel.

We have seen in the last article that this change has to come voluntarily, the repentant person has to voluntarily offer himself as a “living sacrifice” to the Lord. When he does this, God renews his mind; and then again it is the person's responsibility to demonstrate this renewal of the mind, through a changed life and behavior. The Holy Spirit of God residing in every Born-Again Believer helps and guides him in this; provided the person continues to obey the Holy Spirit, instead of the lusts of the flesh and the world (Galatians 5:16-25; Ephesians 4:22-24). As Paul says through the Holy Spirit in 2 Corinthians 5:14-17, from God’s perspective, every Born-Again person is not merely a dusted, cleaned, and brushed-up version of his former self. He is not just repaired, trimmed, dented, painted, and polished to look new. But all the old things have passed away and he is an altogether new creation of God; and this newness has to be made evident. God has done this with a purpose – so that this Born-Again person should no longer live for himself, but live for his redeemer. Once again, we see that this desire, this change of having a desire of living for His redeemer, has to begin, has to come from the repentant person himself। God does want to see it happen, but the person has to initiate it.

There are two reasons why God wants to see this change in the person. The first, the one many are familiar with is, because it glorifies God – it must be the Believer’s purpose in life to glorify God through his life. Paul emphasized this in his first letter to the Corinthians, when he wrote, "Or do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and you are not your own? For you were bought at a price; therefore, glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God's" (1 Corinthians 6:19-20). And most Believers think this is all that there is to it – they are to live a changed life, so that God may be glorified. And though often unexpressed, it does not seem to be a very appealing proposition to many – that they should radically change, they undergo this process of change, they give up on so many things, but at the end not they, but God gets all the glory! It dampens the enthusiasm for change in many, because they feel that there should have been something in it for them also. And so, it is not uncommon to see a reluctance in stepping up to start the process of change, and a tardiness in progressing through the change. Had they been aware of and understood the second reason of the necessity for this change that God wants to see in a Christian Believer’s life, their whole attitude towards the change would have been quite different.

We will consider this second reason in the next article.

The Necessity of Worshipping (2)

In our study on worshipping God, i.e., giving to God, we have seen in the last article that it is God’s commandment that His people, even for prayers, i.e., even while asking from Him, should approach Him not as beggars with a begging bowl, but as His Priests – a status that He has given to all His Born-Again Believers. We have seen some verses from God’s Word, the Bible, to illustrate that God has commanded that none should come to Him with empty hands; at the least, people should have an attitude of thankfulness towards Him for all His goodness towards them, even while coming to Him in prayer, i.e., asking for things to be done for them, by Him. Today, we will see a further aspect of this – God is looking for true worshippers.

The Lord Jesus, in His conversation with the Samaritan woman at the well, says to her in John 4:23-24 “But the hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshippers will worship the Father in spirit and truth; for the Father is seeking such to worship Him. God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth”. While these verses are often quoted when exhorting people to worship God, hardly ever is their true meaning understood or carried out; instead, after using these verses, people go ahead and start doing whatever seems appropriate to them in the name of “worship.” To understand these verses, and the Lord’s instructions here, it is necessary to understand the terms used here.

The Greek Word translated here as worship is ‘proskuneos’ which literally means to completely prostrate, bend over, and spread out before someone,; implying humble submission and total unquestioning obedience – and such are the worshippers – proskunetes – the people that God is looking for; i.e., those who will ‘proskuneos’ before Him, meaning, those who glorify Him through their complete unquestioning submission and obedience to Him. A very good example of this “worship” is Abraham – consider his leaving his family and people and coming out of his native place Ur, at the call of God, without even knowing where God will be taking him and what will happen to him and his family; consider his taking Isaac for sacrificing him, without any protest or question; such are the “worshippers” the ‘proskunetes’ that God is looking for to “proskuneos” before Him.

There is a very simple, straightforward logic and understanding in this concept of proskuneos and proskunetes stated by the Lord Jesus – someone will truly and sincerely proskuneos before another, only when he well knows that not only is that person well deserving of it, but there is also a very meaningful and very sincere relationship between them. Otherwise, if such a relationship of sincerity and truth is not there, then all external forms of “worship” will only be hypocrisy, only meant for a “show” more to please man, or to show-off to man, than anything else. So too with God – only they can sincerely ‘proskuneos’ before Him, who not only personally know Him well enough, but also have an intimate relationship with Him. This is similar to the relationship Adam and Eve had with God in the Garden of Eden, and God came to meet them, fellowship with them, enjoy His time with them. To receive forgiveness of sins and be saved, implies man being restored to that same relationship with God, which was there in the Garden of Eden, but was lost because of sin.

Even now, God is wanting to have this relationship with His redeemed and saved children restored, to have man come back to Him in the beauty and glory of this restored relationship – He is searching for those who will worship or proskuneos before Him in Spirit and in truth – have an uninhibited relationship and open fellowship with Him, as Adam and Eve initially had. To come into this blessed relationship and fellowship with God, the first step is to get rid of that which caused this separation, i.e., sin, from one’s life. To provide a permanent solution to this problem of sin, the Lord Jesus took upon Himself all the sins of entire mankind, and paid their penalty through His sacrifice on the Cross, He died, was buried, and rose again the third day. Now, whoever, voluntarily and willingly accepts this redeeming work of the Lord Jesus, asks Him to forgive his sins, surrenders himself to Him, he becomes a member of God’s family, and comes into this blessed relationship with God.

We will continue to develop this theme, and from the next article see why God wants us to worship Him; and be sure, it is not for His, but for our benefit.

If you have not yet accepted the discipleship of the Lord Jesus, then to ensure your eternal life and heavenly rewards, take a decision in favor of the Lord Jesus now. Wherever there is surrender and obedience towards the Lord Jesus, the Lord’s blessings and safety are also there. If you are still not Born Again, have not obtained salvation, or have not asked the Lord Jesus for forgiveness for your sins, then you have the opportunity to do so right now. A short prayer said voluntarily with a sincere heart, with heartfelt repentance for your sins, and a fully submissive attitude, “Lord Jesus, I confess that I have disobeyed You, and have knowingly or unknowingly, in mind, in thought, in attitude, and in deeds, committed sins. I believe that you have fully borne the punishment of my sins by your sacrifice on the cross, and have paid the full price of those sins for all eternity. Please forgive my sins, change my heart and mind towards you, and make me your disciple, take me with you." God longs for your company and wants to see you blessed, but to make this possible, is your personal decision. Will you not say this prayer now, while you have the time and opportunity to do so – the decision is yours.

The Necessity of Worshipping (1)

Click Here for a discussion on Today's Article:

Discussion Audio                     Discussion Video

In our study on worshipping God, we have seen that prayer and worshipping are two methods of communicating with God. In prayer, we ask from God, while in worship we give to God. Worship can be by offering material things to God, and by offering our words to God. Worship through words can be in the form of Thanking God, Praising God, and Exalting God. Commonly, people start off by learning to pray; most stay only at this stage. Some progress to Thanking God, a few more rise further and start Praising God, and rare are the ones who actually Exalt God and glorify Him in their worship. In the previous articles, we have seen about these three expressions of worship. Today, we will examine another aspect of worshipping God – The Necessity of Worship; i.e., why should a Christian Believer Worship God, and not just pray to God?

Whether in prayer, or in worshipping, we come into the presence of God, to communicate with Him. Without coming into the presence of the Lord God, we cannot even offer our prayers to Him. With this in mind, consider a few related verses from the Word of God:

  • Exodus 34:20 “…And none shall appear before Me empty-handed.”
  • Deuteronomy 16:16 “Three times a year all your males shall appear before the Lord your God in the place which He chooses: at the Feast of Unleavened Bread, at the Feast of Weeks, and at the Feast of Tabernacles; and they shall not appear before the Lord empty-handed.”
  • Psalm 107:8 - "Oh, that men would give thanks to the Lord for His goodness, And for His wonderful works to the children of men!"
  • Philippians 4:6-7 "Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God, and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus."
  • Psalms 50:15 “Call upon Me in the day of trouble; I will deliver you, and you shall glorify Me.”

It is apparent from these verses that those who come before God, must also have something to offer to Him; it is God’s commandment. The Israelites who came to celebrate the Feasts ordained by God, had to bring an offering to offer to the Lord God; they were forbidden to appear before Him empty-handed. God wants that people should understand and acknowledge the goodness that God has towards them, and the good that He does for them, and be thankful to God for it. Prayers made to God have to be offered with thanksgiving, i.e., the Christian Believer has to approach God not as a beggar with a begging bowl, but as a Priest of God – a position already granted by God to every Believer (1 Peter 2:9; Revelation 1:6). It is when we approach God with this understanding and acknowledgement of what He has done for us, is doing for us, that we will also have His peace guarding our hearts and mind, in each and every situation that we may be in. People pray and expect God to deliver them from their circumstances, from their troubles; but how many, after their being delivered actually turn back to God to thank Him? We see from Psalm 50:5 that God commands being thankful or grateful to Him for His help; He has to be glorified; His help and deliverance has to be publicly acknowledged. The Lord Jesus re-iterated this same thought in Luke 17:12-19, where out of the ten lepers who were healed, only one, a Samaritan, returned to thank Him for His graciousness; the Lord pointedly asked in verse 17 “...Were there not ten cleansed? But where are the nine?”

We will continue learning about the necessity of worshipping in the next article as well, and will consider the classical verses often quoted and used in context of worshipping, John 4:23-24. But for now, ponder over your communications with God; are you just limited to only asking, or merely saying a polite ‘thank you’ to the merciful, loving, compassionate, patient heavenly Father? He wants to see you far more blessed than this; bot for that to happen, you need to be in a correct relationship with Him, voluntarily, as His child, need to become a part of His family. This is only possible by believing on the Lord Jesus and accepting His work of salvation done for saving you.
