The Material Blessings of Worship (4)

Discussion Audio                                                                  Discussion Video

For the past few articles, we have been studying about how worshiping God, i.e., giving to God, benefits the worshipers, not only spiritually but physically and materially as well. In the preceding articles we have seen about the physical and material blessings for God’s committed worshipers, i.e., those who worship Him in spirit and in truth – those who “proskuneos” before Him. We have also seen that material and physical blessings coming from God because of worshiping Him, does not mean that God can be manipulated into giving material things because of a person’s worship. We have already seen some Biblical examples to understand this concept; from today we will start looking at some other concrete Biblical examples of material and physical blessings through worship.

In 2 Chronicles, chapters 29 to 32 are about King Hezekiah, who was one of the godly kings of Israel, but his father, King Ahaz had been an idolatrous king who never respected the Lord God. Hezekiah became king of Israel at the age of 25, and from the very beginning it is written about him that he did what was right in the sight of God (2 Chronicles 29:1-2). King Hezekiah restored God’s worship in the Temple, had the Levites re-start doing their duties, restored the observance of the Feasts of the Lord, got the people of his kingdom involved in worshiping God, and destroyed places of idolatry. Under King Hezekiah came about a great reformation. He led by example, and gave for the daily Temple offerings and feasts from his personal possessions (2 Chronicles 31:3); he then asked the people of his kingdom to start supporting the priests and Levites and devote themselves to God (2 Chronicles 31:4).

When the people saw their king lead by example, God’s people submitted to God’s Word, corrected themselves, and once again started to bring in their tithes and offerings to the house of the Lord to meet the needs of the Priests and of the House of God. As they faithfully brought in their tithes and offerings, God blessed them abundantly; so, they could bring in even more from their increase to the house of the Lord, and it was so much that even after the needs of the priests and of the house of God had been fully met, a great abundance was left over and laid in heaps in the house of the Lord, since there was no more room left to store it all. To accommodate this abundance of outpouring, king Hezekiah had to ask for more rooms to be built to store the tithes and offerings (2 Chronicles 31:5-12).

God blessed and prospered him and his people physically and materially in many ways; way beyond their imagination and expectation. It is written for him in God’s Word, “Thus Hezekiah did throughout all Judah, and he did what was good and right and true before the Lord his God. And in every work that he began in the service of the house of God, in the law and in the commandment, to seek his God, he did it with all his heart. So he prospered” (2 Chronicles 31:20-21). But later, as Israel once again deviated away from following the Lord and fell into serious problems, God reminded them: “Bring all the tithes into the storehouse, That there may be food in My house, And try Me now in this," Says the Lord of hosts, "If I will not open for you the windows of heaven And pour out for you such blessing That there will not be room enough to receive it” (Malachi 3:10).

In the next article we will see another example of how faithfulness towards God and combining prayer with worship leads to various kinds of blessings like getting favor, promotion, intellectual and administrative abilities, authority, victory over satanic influences and attacks, capabilities of doing extra-ordinary things, etc., besides the material blessings – all in the life of one person. But, bear in mind that worship and its benefits that we have been talking about, are all related to the people of God. To be able to truly worship God, and to receive its physical and spiritual benefits, one has to first come into the right relationship with God. This is done by voluntarily coming into faith in the Lord Jesus, and joining God’s family (John 1:12-13).

If you have not yet accepted the discipleship of the Lord Jesus, then to ensure your eternal life and heavenly rewards, take a decision in favor of the Lord Jesus now. Wherever there is surrender and obedience towards the Lord Jesus, the Lord’s blessings and safety are also there. If you are still not Born Again, have not obtained salvation, or have not asked the Lord Jesus for forgiveness for your sins, then you have the opportunity to do so right now. A short prayer said voluntarily with a sincere heart, with heartfelt repentance for your sins, and a fully submissive attitude, “Lord Jesus, I confess that I have disobeyed You, and have knowingly or unknowingly, in mind, in thought, in attitude, and in deeds, committed sins. I believe that you have fully borne the punishment of my sins by your sacrifice on the cross, and have paid the full price of those sins for all eternity. Please forgive my sins, change my heart and mind towards you, and make me your disciple, take me with you." God longs for your company and wants to see you blessed, but to make this possible, is your personal decision. Will you not say this prayer now, while you have the time and opportunity to do so – the decision is yours.

Growth through God’s Word /

The Elementary Principles – 115

God’s Forgiveness and Justice – 21

Lord’s Death and its Implications - 3

In this study on “Eternal Judgement,” the sixth elementary principle given in Hebrews 6:1-2, in the previous articles we have seen that along with the first sin, came three things – first, death, spiritual as well as physical; second, life-long suffering, problems, and toil for mankind; and third, a promise of restoration and eternal rewards for those who turn back to God and submit themselves to Him. Having seen about the second and third effects of sin, i.e., life-long suffering, problems, and toil, and about determining and giving of eternal rewards to each truly Born-Again Christian Believer, for the past few articles we have been seeing about the first effect of sin, i.e., death, and how the sacrifice of the Lord Jesus on the Cross of Calvary has delivered us from death. Having taken all the sins of all of mankind upon Himself, having become sin for us, the Lord paid in full for those sins through His death, in both its, physical and spiritual aspects. Thereby, He prepared the way of redemption from sins and re-conciliation with God for all those who believe in Him, accept His sacrifice on the Cross, and willingly submit their lives to Him, to live in obedience to Him and His Word. Today we will consider some aspects of the sacrificial death of the Lord on the Cross, related to the other two things that came with sin and the lives of Christian Believers.

As we had said in the earlier articles on this series, sin brought in separation of man from fellowship with God, i.e., spiritual death; man was sent out of the Garden of Eden, and God ensured that man could never return there. But as the subsequent events, from Genesis chapter 4 onwards, and presently our own experiences show, despite this broken fellowship, and permanent banishment from the Garden of Eden, God did not stop loving and caring for man, providing for him, helping him in various ways, and being involved in his welfare. It was because of this love for man that God made the provision for man’s sins to be atoned and his being restored to fellowship with Him, through the Lord Jesus Christ. But despite all this, as has been pointed out earlier, none of this ever took away or even lessened, the second effect of sin, i.e., life-long suffering, problems, and toil. Rather, as we have seen that though it is a God given mechanism for our benefit, but for the Christian Believers, it has also been ordained by God that we enter His kingdom through much suffering (Acts 14:22; Philippians 1:29; 2 Timothy 3:12). Similarly, for the eternal rewards in heaven, although the sacrificial death of the Lord has ensured that all who accept His sacrifice and believe in it, will get to heaven and be rewarded, yet, the Lord’s death has not in any way decreased the accountability of the Christian Believers to God in any manner. As Paul, through the use of “we” in 2 Corinthians 5:10, has indicated, even he and the likes of him, besides all other Christian Believers, will be giving an account of his life, works, and things in their heart to the Lord in just the same manner as anyone else. Therefore, the death of the Lord does not in any manner alter this accounting to make it any different for anyone else.

So, to summarize, Christ died for all (2 Corinthians 5:15; Hebrews 2:9), and through His death and resurrection, He has reconciled His Believers with God (Romans 5:1-2, 10; 2 Corinthians 5:18; Ephesians 2:16), He has paid the wages of sin for everybody, and this becomes effective in the lives of those who cares to believe and accept His sacrifice (Romans 6:23). His death and resurrection were never meant to provide an easy going, comfortable, and prosperous life to those who come to faith in Him and accept Him as their Savior Lord. Therefore, all the preaching and teaching, done by many, and done very frequently, that accepting the Lord Jesus will bring an end to all troubles, and sort things out for those who are in any kind problems, make them prosperous, is unBiblical and false. No doubt that the Lord God has promised that He will be with His people in all their troubles, comfort them, help them, guide them through their problems, will stand by them, and keep them at peace in all situations. But nowhere has He said that He has ensured them a trouble-free, comfortable, prosperous life; as many preach and teach, to entice people to accept the Lord, through perishable worldly inducements, contrary to James 4:4 and 1 John 2:15-17.

Those who do so, should remember that while the Lord has taken our sins upon Himself and paid for them through His life; He has not taken upon Himself the consequences of those sins, i.e., the second and third effects of sin, and has not gone through these two effects for anyone. As God’s Word the Bible very clearly demonstrates, every Believer has to face them, and live through these two effects individually in his life. What God has not said, He will neither accept, nor honor, nor do; and any wrong preaching and teaching in His name will only create problems and harm, never benefit anyone, in any manner.

In the next article we will look at some other popular, but wrong notions related to the crucifixion and death of the Lord, that have no Biblical support.

If you have not yet accepted the discipleship of the Lord, make your decision in favor of the Lord Jesus now to ensure your eternal life and heavenly blessings. Where there is obedience to the Lord, where there is respect and obedience to His Word, there is also the blessing and protection of the Lord. Repenting of your sins, and asking the Lord Jesus for forgiveness of your sins, voluntarily and sincerely, surrendering yourself to Him - is the only way to salvation and heavenly life. You only have to say a short but sincere prayer to the Lord Jesus Christ willingly and with a penitent heart, and at the same time completely commit and submit your life to Him. You can also make this prayer and submission in words something like, “Lord Jesus, I am sorry for my sins and repent of them. I thank you for taking my sins upon yourself, paying for them through your life.  Because of them you died on the cross in my place, were buried, and you rose again from the grave on the third day for my salvation, and today you are the living Lord God and have freely provided to me the forgiveness, and redemption from my sins, through faith in you. Please forgive my sins, take me under your care, and make me your disciple. I submit my life into your hands." Your one prayer from a sincere and committed heart will make your present and future life, in this world and in the hereafter, heavenly and blessed for eternity.

How does God provide material prosperity for His children?

The concept of working for a living has been there since the very beginning in God’s Word the Bible. God made Adam, planted the Garden of Eden for him, but gave him the responsibility of working in it and maintaining it (Genesis 2:8, 15). Even Israel, in their wilderness journey to the promised land of Canaan, although they did not sow or reap any harvest during the forty years journey, yet they had to labor every morning to gather their quota of manna; if they failed to do so, it was gone as the day progressed (Exodus 16:21). Once in Canaan, they had to fight to possess the land, and then to cultivate it to receive it's benefits. Even when God fought for Israel to defeat their enemies, they still had to go and position themselves in the battle ground (2 Chronicles 20:14-17), and only then go and gather the loot for themselves (2 Chronicles 20:25). None of Gods people got anything by sitting back at home, or taking it easy and just waiting for God to fill in their pockets, with whether spiritual or physical blessings; they always had to work for their living and maintaining their families - a fulfillment of the legacy "In the sweat of your face you shall eat bread" (Genesis 3:19) of the first sin our fore-parents committed. Even the Lord Jesus worked as a carpenter (Mark 6:3) till the time He began His ministry. The Holy Spirit, through the Apostle Paul has laid it down in Gods Word for us: "For you yourselves know how you ought to follow us, for we were not disorderly among you; nor did we eat anyone's bread free of charge, but worked with labor and toil night and day, that we might not be a burden to any of you, not because we do not have authority, but to make ourselves an example of how you should follow us. For even when we were with you, we commanded you this: If anyone will not work, neither shall he eat. For we hear that there are some who walk among you in a disorderly manner, not working at all, but are busybodies. Now those who are such we command and exhort through our Lord Jesus Christ that they work in quietness and eat their own bread” (2 Thessalonians 3: 7-12). Paul and his companions, although primarily engaged in Gods ministry of spreading the gospel, also worked for a living and for helping others (1 Thessalonians 2:7-10), and so should everybody else. Workers are exhorted in the Word of God to faithfully do their work, as to the Lord and not to men, and God will reward them for it (Colossians 3:22-25; 1 Peter 2:18-21). Hence, the first thing for a Believer to do to be prosperous is to be a sincere, honest, hardworking person, fulfilling his assigned responsibilities so as to be a witness for his faith, for his Lord, and to glorify the savior Lord Jesus Christ (1 Peter 2:12) through his work, trusting God to reward his sincerity and hard-work, in God's own time and manner.

Secondly, as is evident from the life of Paul, besides the secular work, we should always be determined to find time and opportunity to engage in God's Work as well – it is of paramount importance. God has already determined something or the other to be done by everyone one of His Born Again children (Ephesians 2:10), and has accordingly given us the required gifts. He sends opportunities our way, appropriate to our God ordained ministries, for us to fulfill. If we are not aware or sure of the work God wants us to do for Him, then we should spend time in praying and inquiring from God about it. An indicator of God's desire for us can be the various spiritual activity opportunities that either often come our way, or we find interesting to do, or others often entrust us with. We should make ourselves available to God, to our Church, and to our fellowship, and should ask God to lead us into the things that He wants us to do. It says in 3 John 1:2 “Beloved, I pray that you may prosper in all things and be in health, just as your soul prospers”. In other words, our physical prosperity, in Gods scheme of things, is linked to our spiritual prosperity. As we prosper spiritually, we will also prosper physically. When we take care of God's work, God takes care of us and our family.

Thirdly, we should make it a point to tithe from whatever little we presently have or get. God never set a lower or minimum limit to earnings for tithing. The more we give to God, God returns even more back to us. From whatever we earn, little or much, we should faithfully and regularly tithe and give our tithe portion into the Church, without spending it in the name of God according to our own fancy. We ought to bring and put it into the house of God as it says in Malachi 3:10; only then should we use the rest for our needs; and we will see for ourselves how God blesses us for it. A very good example of how God blesses those who trust Him for His Word of blessing through tithing is the life of William Colgate, the founder of the world famous Colgate toothpaste: (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Colgate). Therefore we should not let Satan create an apprehension or fear in our mind about not being able to afford tithing and cheat us out of our blessings; rather, we should trust God and do it regularly. No one can reap a harvest, without first sowing some seed; our tithe is the seed sown for our harvest - the quality and quantity of the seed sown determines the quality and quantity of the harvest we will receive.

Fourthly, we ought to pray to God and ask for His will about studying/training further and thereby improving our job opportunities. Now-a-days there are many online courses and part-time or on-the-job study opportunities, which we can make use of, so as to be earning, as well as improving our work and salary prospects.

By doing these in the guidance and will of God, we will find that somehow we will be able to find the time, strength and wisdom to not only do our present job well, but also do God's work, look after our family, and also study for improving our prospects and do well in the further studies/training. When done in the will and guidance of God, the battle to balance these responsibilities will not be ours but the Lords; we will only have to position ourselves in the battlefield, and then go in to gather the spoils.

A great portion from Gods Word for encouragement in trying times is Isaiah 40:27-31 “Why do you say, O Jacob, And speak, O Israel: "My way is hidden from the Lord, And my just claim is passed over by my God"? Have you not known? Have you not heard? The everlasting God, the Lord, The Creator of the ends of the earth, neither faints nor is weary. His understanding is unsearchable. He gives power to the weak, And to those who have no might He increases strength. Even the youths shall faint and be weary, And the young men shall utterly fall, But those who wait on the Lord Shall renew their strength; They shall mount up with wings like eagles, They shall run and not be weary, They shall walk and not faint” and I encourage you to claim it for yourself.”

The Material Blessings of Worship (3)

For the past few articles, we have been studying about how worshipping God, i.e., giving to God, benefits the worshippers, not only spiritually but physically and materially as well. In the last two articles we have seen about the physical and material blessings for God’s committed worshippers, i.e., those who worship Him in spirit and in truth - those who “proskuneos” before Him. We have also seen that material and physical blessings coming from God because of worshipping Him does not mean that God can be manipulated into giving material things because of a person’s worship. We will now start looking at some Biblical examples of material and physical blessings through worship.

King Hezekiah restored God’s worship in the Temple, had the Levites re-start doing their duties, restored the observance of the Feasts of the Lord, got the people of his kingdom involved in worshipping God, and destroyed places of idolatry.

God blessed and prospered him and his people physically and materially in many ways, way beyond their imagination and expectation.

In the next article we will see another example of how faithfulness towards God and combining prayer with worship leads to various kinds of blessings like getting favor, promotion, intellectual and administrative abilities, authority, victory over satanic influences and attacks, capabilities of doing extra-ordinary things, etc., besides the material blessings - all in the life of one person.

Will you not say this prayer now, while you have the time and opportunity to do so - the decision is yours.
