Teachings Related to the Gospel – 14

We had seen at the beginning of this series that for the growth and edification of the Christian Believers and the Church, they must be well versed in the whole of the Bible and its teachings. Of the various Biblical teachings that the Believers need to learn and know, three kinds of teachings – about the gospel, about the fundamental principles, and about Christian living, are fundamentally essential. Of these three, we have started to learn about the teachings related to the gospel; and have seen from Mark 1:14-15 that repentance and believing in the gospel are the two key components of the teachings related to the gospel. In the recent articles we had been considering various aspects related to repentance; from today we will begin considering some aspects about believing in the gospel.

At the beginning of this series on teachings related to the gospel, we had seen that the word “gospel” literally means “good news;” and from the first use of the word “gospel” in the first three Gospels we had surmised that it is about the Kingdom of God, made available by God to all of mankind, including even the poor and lowly, through the life and ministry of His son the Lord Jesus Christ. To preach the gospel, is to preach the good news of the Kingdom of God (Matthew 9:35; 24:14; Mark 13:10; Luke 9:6). Notice that in these three, and in the other references in the gospel accounts, the word “gospel,” during Lord’s earthly ministry, as well as the ministry of His disciples, has been used by them in relation to the Kingdom of God. In the Gospel accounts, in nearly all the places, the word “gospel” has been used before the crucifixion, death, burial, and resurrection of the Lord Jesus, i.e., before His atoning sacrifice for the sins of the world.

Hence, in that context, all who heard this expression from the Lord and the disciples, during their ministry before the death and resurrection of the Lord, would not have related it to the Lord’s sacrifice and salvation through believing in it, as we relate it today, since this had not happened at that time. To them, it would have simply conveyed the sense that their long wait for the arrival of the Kingdom of God was over. The Word of God shows us that the people at the time of the Lord Jesus’s earthly ministry were living in anticipation of the promised Messiah, the deliverer who would come and release them from bondage. But many had assumed that this deliverance from bondage meant deliverance from the rule of the Roman empire over them.

In the Old Testament, detailed information is given about the deliverer, the savior, and about the deliverance through him. Therefore, during the days of the Lord Jesus’s earthly ministry, the people already had a strong anticipation that the time of fulfillment of these prophecies was complete; the savior was about to be born and revealed, and they were all waiting for Him. John the Baptist too, began his ministry with a similar anticipation, and recognized Him when He came to him “The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, "Behold! The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!” (John 1:29). Andrew, the disciple of John the Baptist, on hearing this from John accepted Jesus as the Christ, also called his brother, Simon Peter to meet the Lord “He first found his own brother Simon, and said to him, "We have found the Messiah" (which is translated, the Christ)” (John 1:41). Even the general public had a similar anticipation about Him, as the Samaritan woman at the well said to the Lord Jesus, and then to the people of her village “The woman said to Him, "I know that Messiah is coming" (who is called Christ). "When He comes, He will tell us all things. Come, see a Man who told me all things that I ever did. Could this be the Christ?"” (John 4:25, 29). Even after the death and resurrection of the Lord, and just before His ascension, and having prepared the disciples for forty days for their coming world-wide ministry of preaching the gospel of salvation, the disciples were still thinking in terms of an earthly kingdom that would be established and then it would be handed back to the Jews (Acts 1:6). So, to the people at that time, the word “gospel” essentially signified the establishment of God’s Kingdom on earth, with the charge of the Kingdom being given to the Jews.

We will see more in the next article, and how the term “gospel” relates to the heavenly kingdom, deliverance from sins, and salvation.

If you have not yet accepted the discipleship of the Lord, make your decision in favor of the Lord Jesus now to ensure your eternal life and heavenly blessings. Where there is obedience to the Lord, where there is respect and obedience to His Word, there is also the blessing and protection of the Lord. Voluntarily repent of your sins and ask the Lord Jesus for forgiveness of your sins, voluntarily and sincerely surrender yourself to Him - this is the only way to salvation and heavenly life. You only have to say a short but sincere prayer to the Lord Jesus Christ willingly and with a penitent heart, and at the same time completely commit and submit your life to Him. You can also make this prayer and submission in words something like, “Lord Jesus, I am sorry for my sins and repent of them. I thank you for taking my sins upon yourself, paying for them through your life.  Because of them you died on the cross in my place, were buried, and you rose again from the grave on the third day for my salvation, and today you are the living Lord God and have freely provided to me the forgiveness, and redemption from my sins, through faith in you. Please forgive my sins, take me under your care, and make me your disciple. I submit my life into your hands." Your one prayer from a sincere and committed heart will make your present and future life, in this world and in the hereafter, heavenly and blessed for eternity.

The Elementary Principles – 111

God’s Forgiveness and Justice – 17

Remembrance of Sin Forgiven and Forgotten - 9

In this study on “Eternal Judgement,” the sixth elementary principle given in Hebrews 6:1-2, in the previous articles we have seen that the second effect of sin, i.e., life long suffering and toil while we are in this physical body with a sin nature, has some God given and beneficial purposes in our lives. These benefits are not just heavenly, i.e., only for the next world, but are also for this world as we live our day-to-day lives. In effect, through the life-long sufferings, problems, and toil, God has put in place a mechanism for us to live with a constant reminder of the consequences of sin, i.e., of transgressing God’s law; but at the same time God has also put in place earthly as well as heavenly benefits through the sufferings. Having seen the physical and temporal benefits that come with suffering, today we will look at the heavenly benefits that come to the Believers because of suffering in God’s will and remaining trusting and faithful towards Him through them.

The Lord Jesus has assured His disciples, those who follow Him, amongst their heavenly responsibilities, one will be judging the twelve tribes of Israel, “So Jesus said to them, "Assuredly I say to you, that in the regeneration, when the Son of Man sits on the throne of His glory, you who have followed Me will also sit on twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel” (Matthew 19:28). The Apostle Paul, under the guidance of the Holy Spirit has also written the same, “Do you not know that the saints will judge the world? And if the world will be judged by you, are you unworthy to judge the smallest matters? Do you not know that we shall judge angels? How much more, things that pertain to this life?” (1 Corinthians 6:2-3). Quite likely, this judging of Israel, angels, and people of the world will be happening at the time of the first resurrection, in the 1000-year reign of the Lord Jesus Christ, as is mentioned in Revelation 20:1-4. The final or eternal judgment that we are studying will happen after this 1000-year reign of Christ (Revelation 20:7-15). But for us the important thing is that the Christian Believers, the children of God, will be used by the Lord for judging Israel, angels, and the people of the world.

About the sufferings of the Christian Believers, Paul wrote, “Therefore we do not lose heart. Even though our outward man is perishing, yet the inward man is being renewed day by day. For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, is working for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory, while we do not look at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen. For the things which are seen are temporary, but the things which are not seen are eternal” (2 Corinthians 4:16-18). If we consider the life of Paul, after his becoming a follower of the Lord Jesus, till the end of his life, he kept on suffering something or the other, from someone or the other, even from other Christian Believers (Romans 8:36; 1 Corinthians 15:30-32; 2 Corinthians 1:9-10; 4:11; 6:4-10; 11:23-33). Yet, Paul calls his life-long suffering for the work of the Lord “light affliction, which is but for a moment.” What was the secret; how could he do it? Paul could put up with all these sufferings and problems because of his heavenly outlook, as he himself says in the verse quoted above “we do not look at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen.” In other words, Paul was never in any doubt about what awaits him in the life to come, despite whatever might be happening to him while on earth. The rewards continually gathering up for him in heaven, the heavenly end-result awaiting him, was his motive for striving for the Lord and suffering anything that comes while on earth (Philippians 3:12-14). At the end of his life Paul was content that he had faithfully done what had been entrusted to him. He was not afraid of death, but looked forward to receiving his rewards that awaited him in heaven (2 Timothy 4:6-8) – the eternal things mentioned in the verse quoted above “the things which are not seen are eternal.” The same as was stated by the Lord Jesus for the age to come, in Mark 10:30 and Luke 18:30.

As we have said before, and seen through this study, sufferings are not just for retribution for sin, not only for constantly reminding us of the consequences of transgressing God’s commands, i.e., committing sin; but they also are a God given mechanism for giving the Christian Believers benefits – earthly as well as heavenly. We can put up with sufferings, if we are willing to suffer in the will of God, for the work of God, and maintain an attitude like Paul maintained towards them. Because of these reasons, sufferings are and will remain a life-long companion of Believers. They do not go away with salvation; else the children of God would be deprived of earning so many benefits in their life time, for their eternal heavenly life, since wages can only be given for the work done, and not casually thrown around for no valid reason. In the next article we will come to the crucial question, towards which we have been building our study – if they eventually have to be brought out for the eternal judgment, then why does God forget sins after forgiving them? And, the evident simplicity, might well surprise you, just as it has surprised us.

If you have not yet accepted the discipleship of the Lord, make your decision in favor of the Lord Jesus now to ensure your eternal life and heavenly blessings. Where there is obedience to the Lord, where there is respect and obedience to His Word, there is also the blessing and protection of the Lord. Repenting of your sins, and asking the Lord Jesus for forgiveness of your sins, voluntarily and sincerely, surrendering yourself to Him - is the only way to salvation and heavenly life.

The Elementary Principles – 11

Repentance From Dead Works - 7

In our study of Elementary Principles from Hebrews 6:1-2, we are presently considering the first principle, i.e., repentance from dead works; i.e., repentance from those seemingly religious and good works, that do not cause any spiritual growth or maturity in the person doing them. So far, having seen three kinds of self-determined dead works from the Bible i.e., self-determined ministries (Matthew 7:21-23), self-determined worship of God (Matthew 15:3-9), and self-determined status of salvation (Acts 8:5-25), since the last article we have begun considering another kind of very common misconceptions, that are quite emphatically preached and taught by some sects and denominations. They are teachings and practices regarding God the Holy Spirit, His availability and His ministry amongst the people of God, but do not have any Biblical support to make them acceptable. In the last article we have seen the wrong teachings they preach about receiving the Holy Spirit, and have also seen the related actual Biblical teachings. Today we will consider another related false teaching.

Another group of false teachings propagated by these sects and denominations, by misinterpreting and misapplying various Biblical texts is about "speaking in tongues." These have already been considered in detail and explained in the earlier articles related to the ministry of God the Holy Spirit. But for our present purposes, let us briefly consider their main teachings:

  • They, on the basis of Acts 2:1-11, preach and teach that speaking in "tongues" is the proof of having received the Holy Spirit.

  • On the basis of 1 Corinthians 14:2 they claim that the "tongues" mentioned in the Bible are "heavenly languages" understood only by God, and thereby they justify uttering gibberish as “speaking in tongues”.

  • They misuse Romans 8:26-27 to claim that speaking in tongues is heavenly prayer language, used by the Holy Spirit.

  • They add, that this special prayer language is necessary to keep prayers secret from Satan.

Let us now see what God’s Word the Bible has to say about the above:

The very first mention of tongues in the Bible is in the above-mentioned passage of Acts 2. This passage clearly states that the "tongues" been spoken by the disciples of the Lord after being filled by the Holy Spirit on the day of Pentecost, were earthly languages spoken by the Jews assembled from the various places (Acts 2:6, 8, 11); about 15 different geographical locations are mentioned between verses 9 to 11, for fulfilling the requirements of the Law.

On receiving the Holy Spirit, when the disciples started speaking in “tongues,” the assembled people on hearing what was being spoken by the disciples through the Holy Spirit, could not only identify the language being spoken (v.6, 8), but those who spoke that language could also understand the content of what was being spoken - the wonderful works of God (v.11). The same, knowing and understanding the language and the spoken content, happened in the house of Cornelius, after Peter had preached the gospel there (Acts 10:46) and the Holy Spirit fell on those who believed.

We see from 1 Corinthians 14:27-28, a clear and categorical instruction that in the Church, when speaking in an unknown language, only two or at the most three people should speak, one at a time, and it is only to be done if there is an interpreter, otherwise to keep silent. The unambiguous implication is that the unknown language is a language of the world; a language that other people also know, speak, understand, and can translate or interpret. But the commonly seen thing is that practically everyone tries to speak “in tongues” at the top of their voice, simultaneously uttering unintelligible sounds repetitively, not even the speaker knowing what they are saying, and with no one “interpreting” for another – a clear breach of God’s commandment; but yet they believe that they are the real Believers. So, the gibberish spoken and passed off as "heavenly language" has no Biblical support.

The argument that whenever a person is filled with the Holy Spirit, he also speaks in tongues, and therefore the proof of being filled with the Holy Spirit is speaking in tongues is also false. None of those who were filled with the Holy Spirit in the Old Testament, ever spoke in any unknown languages (e.g., Judges 3:10; 6:34; 13:25; 14:6, 19; 15:14; 1 Samuel 10:10; 11:6; 16:13; etc.). The first four people who were filled with the Holy Spirit, in the New Testament (John the Baptist, Luke 1:15; Mary, the mother of Lord Jesus Luke 1:35; Elizabeth the mother of John the Baptist, Luke 1:41; Zechariah the father of John the Baptist, Luke 1:67), never spoke in tongues. In the book of Acts, every time being filled with the Holy Spirit is mentioned, speaking in any kind of tongue is not always mentioned (e.g., Acts 4:8, 31; 13:9, 52). So, their notion offered as proof that, filling with the Holy Spirit has always been accompanied by speaking in tongues is false.

The claim that "tongues" is a heavenly language, made on the basis of 1 Corinthians 14:2 is a deliberate misuse of this verse. In this verse, Paul is using sarcastic language to say that no one understands those who utter gibberish. This is affirmed by another phrase used by Paul, a little ahead in verse 9, where he calls speaking in tongues as speaking in the air, a figure of speech for speaking unintelligibly and incomprehensibly. But these people keep absolutely quiet about v.9, and ignore it altogether, while emphatically misusing v.2 to make their case. Now, how can they reconcile v.2 and 9, if speaking in tongues is speaking in a heavenly language? If speaking in unknown tongues is speaking to God in v.2, then how can it immediately become speaking in the air in v.9, unless it always was speaking unintelligible gibberish, which they were trying to wrongly pass off as a "heavenly language," whereas Paul was using sarcastic language to debunk their gibberish.

Nowhere in the Bible, the necessity of a special prayer language has been mentioned or taught. Paul often requests for prayers from his readers and usually for urgent or serious matters, but he never said to pray in any special language for the prayers to be effective. In Romans 8:26-27, Paul is mentioning "groanings" or "sighing" that are sounds uttered to express of deep feelings and not any language, and Paul says that these groanings of the Holy Spirit cannot be uttered, or expressed. Very clearly here, Paul is not saying anything about any kind of languages or tongues. Moreover, the intercessions mentioned here on behalf of the saints, are done by the Holy Spirit; not that He makes the Believers speak those intercessions. So, how can these verses be taken to mean that speaking in tongues is a prayer language, and that too of the Holy Spirit?

As for the notion that tongues serve as a special prayer language of the Believers to keep the prayers secret from Satan, is there any Biblical mention or proof of any such teaching, anywhere in the whole of God's Word? When even the person speaking in “tongues” does not know what he has said or prayed, how is he even sure that he has prayed to God and not blasphemed Him? Are not the prayers of those who do not speak in tongues heard and answered by God? If Satan can freely go into God's presence in heaven and converse with God in heaven (Job 1:6-12; 2:1-7), in whatever language is used in heaven, then where is the logic or need for a special “heavenly” prayer language to keep prayers secret from Satan? In any case, as these passages from Job show, Satan cannot touch God’s people beyond the limits set for him by God. Therefore, what’s the problem if Satan gets to hear the contents of prayers? Will God in any way become hampered from answering prayers, if Satan knows what has been asked? Is Satan so strong that he can obstruct God from answering prayers? Does God need to do anything secretly or in a covert manner? If so, from whom should God hide and why? Who can obstruct or defeat His purposes?

We see that none of the notions of these sects and denominations stand up to even common sense, nor at all to God's Word. So, one way or the other, there is no need or logic for Christian Believers having or using unknown heavenly languages, and this whole preaching and teaching is false, baseless and vain. It does not have any support from God's Word, and no Believer has any need to fall for this unBiblical doctrine – which is just another kind of "dead works."

Of these three, we have started to learn about the teachings related to the gospel; and had seen from Mark 1:14-15 that repentance and believing in the gospel are two key components of the teachings related to the gospel. In the recent articles we had been considering various aspects related to repentance; today we will begin considering some aspects about believing in the gospel.

Notice in all of these, and other references in the gospel accounts, the word “gospel” has been used by the Lord in relation to the Kingdom of God, during His earthly ministry, as well as the ministry of His disciples. But for many, this deliverance from bondage meant deliverance from the rule of the Roman empire over them.

Andrew, the disciple of John the Baptist, on hearing this from John accepted Christ Jesus, also called his brother, Simon Peter to meet the Lord “He first found his own brother Simon, and said to him, "We have found the Messiah" (which is translated, the Christ)” (John 1:41). Even the general public had a similar anticipation about Him, as the Samaritan woman at the well said to the Lord Jesus “The woman said to Him, "I know that Messiah is coming" (who is called Christ). "When He comes, He will tell us all things. Come, see a Man who told me all things that I ever did. Could this be the Christ?"” (John 4:25, 29). Even after the death and resurrection of the Lord, and just before His ascension, and having prepared the disciples for forty days for their coming world-wide ministry of preaching the gospel of salvation, the disciples were still thinking in terms of an earthly kingdom that would be established and handed back to the Jews (Acts 1:6).

Repenting of your sins, and asking the Lord Jesus for forgiveness of your sins, voluntarily and sincerely, surrendering yourself to Him - is the only way to salvation and heavenly life.
