Appropriately Handling God’s Word – 17

For the past few articles, we have been considering Paul’s utilizing and handling God’s Word from 2 Corinthians 2:17, so that we can learn to do the same. Through Paul’s writings, we have seen how, not a few, but many preachers and teachers, right from the time of the first Church, had started to use the preaching and the teaching of God’s Word for personal gain and benefit. They did this by distorting and corrupting God’s Word and the gospel. From today we will shift our focus to another section of Paul’s second letter to the Corinthians, to 2 Corinthians 4:1-5, and from there learn some more things from Paul about utilizing and handling the Word of God.

Paul had said to the Corinthian Believers in the previous chapter, i.e., 2 Corinthians chapter 3, that they were the proof of his ministry and his letter of recommendation, for the world to see, read, and understand what he was preaching and teaching. Paul in 2 Corinthians 3:12 also states another thing related to his ministry – because of the hope, the eternal and blessed hope, that he had, through the gospel which he preached, he used great boldness of speech in his preaching. We have seen earlier that Paul unhesitatingly admitted that he was not considered to be a great or skillful orator (2 Corinthians 10:1, 10) by the people. But this did not bother him, since he only spoke what the Holy Spirit asked him to say; and said it when and where the Holy Spirit asked him to speak. So, as he had stated in 1 Corinthians 3:6-8, he was only the sower of the seed that had been given to him, merely the conveyor of the given message; it was God who gave results to his labor. Hence, he did not have to bother about or depend upon any of his personal skills and abilities to fulfill his God assigned ministry. He well knew and understood that if he continued to preach and teach under the guidance and power of the Holy Spirit, God would give the required results, and bless his efforts. Why then did he need to use “great boldness of speech” in preaching the gospel and teaching God’s Word?

We tend to misunderstand this word ‘boldness’ in our present manner of using this word; since we understand it to mean being impudent, or being aggressive, or taking risks in face of dangers. But the word used in the original Greek language and translated as ‘boldness’ here, means being out-spoken, or speaking very plainly, being frank, forthright, and clear about what was being spoken. In other words, Paul had no doubts, never vacillated, and was firm in what he spoke. In conveying his God given message, he neither ‘beat around the bush’, did not use any flowery or idiomatic language, nor did he have to resort to anything that would make his preaching attractive, appealing, and pleasing to the audience. Notice that Paul does not only say ‘boldness’ but ‘great boldness’ in 2 Corinthians 3:12; i.e., he emphasizes this to convey that he was very particular about maintaining clarity of expression. This was because, as we have seen about him in the previous articles, he was very particular to present God’s message just as he had received it, without adding anything to it from his side, or trying to improve its presentation by any means (1 Corinthians 11:23; 15:3; Galatians 1:12; 1 Thessalonians 4:2).

It is in this context, that Paul says in 2 Corinthians 4:1, that he and his colleagues ‘do not lose heart’’ in their ministry given to them by God. We will start considering this in the next article.

If you have not yet accepted the discipleship of the Lord, make your decision in favor of the Lord Jesus now to ensure your eternal life and heavenly blessings. Where there is obedience to the Lord, where there is respect and obedience to His Word, there is also the blessing and protection of the Lord. Repenting of your sins, and asking the Lord Jesus for forgiveness of your sins, voluntarily and sincerely, surrendering yourself to Him - is the only way to salvation and heavenly life. You only have to say a short but sincere prayer to the Lord Jesus Christ willingly and with a penitent heart, and at the same time completely commit and submit your life to Him. You can also make this prayer and submission in words something like, “Lord Jesus, I am sorry for my sins and repent of them. I thank you for taking my sins upon yourself, paying for them through your life.  Because of them you died on the cross in my place, were buried, and you rose again from the grave on the third day for my salvation, and today you are the living Lord God and have freely provided to me the forgiveness, and redemption from my sins, through faith in you. Please forgive my sins, take me under your care, and make me your disciple. I submit my life into your hands." Your one prayer from a sincere and committed heart will make your present and future life, in this world and in the hereafter, heavenly and blessed for eternity.

Appropriately Handling God’s Word – 6

We are learning from Paul’s life and examples of how to handle God’s Word. We have seen from 1 Corinthians 1:17, three things about Paul’s ministry that had a bearing on his using God’s Word in an appropriate manner. Firstly, Paul knew what he had not been sent to do; secondly, he knew what he had been sent to do; and thirdly, in fulfilling his God assigned task, he did not add his own wisdom of words into God’s Word given to him, lest the message of the Cross of Christ be made of no effect. Today we will begin to see another aspect of Paul’s use of God’s Word from 1 Corinthians 2:4-5.

These verses, actually, the whole of chapter 2, builds upon the third point of verse 17 of chapter 1, that we saw in the last article – negating the role of human wisdom in handling God’s Word. Chapter 2 makes it clear that God, to those of His people who are obedient to Him and desirous of sincerely serving Him, gives the required power and ability for their ministry, through His Holy Spirit that resides in them. The Holy Spirit teaches them the appropriate part of God’s Word for their ministry (2:12-13). But those who are not actually committed to the Lord, those who are still in their natural carnal state, are unable to receive or understand what God the Holy Spirit has to say (2:14-15). Paul concludes the chapter with a statement implying that only those who have the mind of Christ can know and learn what God wants to say (2:16). The lesson of this chapter, from our context, is that those committed and surrendered to the Lord, sincerely desirous of serving God the way He wants them to serve Him, will also be given the appropriate Word and taught how to use it, by God the Holy Spirit. Therefore, to appropriately handle God’s Word, the preliminary condition is being committed and surrendered to God, and being willing to sincerely serve Him the way He wants them to do it. With this in mind, we will consider 1 Corinthians 2:4-5.

Paul begins verse 4 by making two claims; his first claim is one that very few, if any, of the present-day preachers and teachers of God’s Word would like to make about themselves. Usually, the prevalent tendency of the current preachers and teachers of God’s Word is to first try to impress the audience, or the recipients of their message, by their education, qualifications, their knowledge, and the popularity of their ministry, etc. They like to take at least a slice of the glory that should be given to God, if not a good part, or all of it; and doing this is contrary to the teachings of God’s Word and improper for a minister of God (Isaiah 42:8; 48:11).

But Paul, straightaway cuts off any possibility of this happening in his handling of God’s Word. Paul does not mention to his audience his education, his rigorous training as a Pharisee, his understanding of the Scriptures, and the stature he had gained because of all this. The only place he refers to this is in Philippians 3:5; there too he mentions it very briefly, and only to discount it, to show how vain these things were for his ministry (Philippians 3:7-8). His second claim is about how his ministry and his handling of God's Word was centered around giving glory to God, through demonstrating that the power that he had for his ministry was entirely from the Spirit of God, and not because of anything from his side.

We will continue studying further both these claims of Paul about his ministry and handling God’s Word in the subsequent articles.

Blessed and Successful Life / आशीषित एवं सफल जीवन – 63 – Be Stewards of God’s Word / परमेश्वर के वचन के भण्डारी बनो – 49

Appropriately Handling God’s Word – 17

For the past few articles, we have been considering Paul’s utilizing and handling God’s Word from 2 Corinthians 2:17, for our learning of doing the same. Through Paul’s writings, we have seen how, not a few, but many preachers and teachers, right from the time of the first Church, had started to use the preaching of the gospel and the teaching of God’s Word for personal gain and benefit, by distorting and corrupting God’s Word and the gospel. From today we will shift our focus to another section of Paul’ second letter to the Corinthians, to 2 Corinthians 4:1-5, and from there learn some more things from Paul about utilizing and handling the Word of God.

Paul had said to the Corinthian Believers in the previous chapter, i.e., 2 Corinthians chapter 3, that they were the proof of his ministry and his letter of recommendation, for the world to see, read and understand, what he was preaching and teaching. Paul in 2 Corinthians 3:12 also states another thing related to his ministry – because of the hope, the eternal and blessed hope, that he had, through the gospel which he preached, he used great boldness of speech in his preaching. We have seen earlier, that Paul unhesitatingly admitted that he was not considered to be a great or skillful orator (2 Corinthians 10:1, 10). But this did not bother him, since he spoke what the Holy Spirit asked him to say, when and where the Holy Spirit asked him to speak. So, as he had stated in 1 Corinthians 3:6-8, he was only the sower of the seed given to him, merely the conveyor of the message, it was God who gave results to his labor.

We tend to misunderstand this word ‘boldness’ in our present manner of using this word; i.e., being impudent or aggressive or taking risks in face of dangers. But the word used in the original Greek language and translated as ‘boldness’ here means being out-spoken, or speaking very plainly, being frank, forthright, and assured of what was being spoken. In other words, Paul had no doubts, never vacillated, and was firm in what he spoke. In conveying his God given message, he neither ‘beat around the bush’, did not use any flowery or idiomatic language, nor did he have to resort to anything to make his preaching attractive, appealing, and pleasing to the audience. Notice that Paul does not only say ‘boldness’ but ‘great boldness’; i.e., he emphasizes on this to convey that he was very particular about doing this. This was because, as we have seen about him in the previous articles, he was particular to present God’s message as he had received it, without adding anything to it from his side, or trying to improve its presentation by any means (1 Corinthians 11:23; 15:3; Galatians 1:12; 1 Thessalonians 4:2).

Blessed and Successful Life / आशीषित एवं सफल जीवन – 52 – Be Stewards of God’s Word / परमेश्वर के वचन के भण्डारी बनो – 38

Chapter 2 makes it clear that God, to His people, those obedient to Him and desirous of sincerely serving Him, has given the required power and ability, through His Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit teaches them the appropriate part of God’s Word for their ministry (2:12-13). But those who are not actually committed to the Lord, those who are still in their natural unsaved state, are unable to receive or understand what God the Holy Spirit has to say (2:14-15). Therefore, to appropriately handle God’s Word, the preliminary condition is being committed and surrendered to God, and be willing to sincerely serve Him the way He wants them to do it. With this in mind, we will consider 1 Corinthians 2:4-5.

Paul begins verse 4 by making two claims; his first claim is one that very few, if any, of the present-day preachers and teachers of God’s Word would like to make today. Usually, the prevalent tendency of the current preachers and teachers of God’s Word is to first try to impress the audience, or the recipients of their message, by their education, qualifications, their knowledge, and the popularity of their ministry, etc. They like to take at least a slice of the glory that should be given to God, if not a good part, or all of it; which is contrary to the teachings of God’s Word and improper for a minister of God (Isaiah 42:8; 48:11). His second claim is about how his ministry and handling God’s Word was centred around giving glory to God, through demonstrating that the power he had for his ministry, was entirely from the Spirit of God, and not because of anything from his side.

We will continue studying further both these claims of Paul about his ministry and handling God’s Word in the subsequent articles.
