पिछले लेखों में हम बाइबल की प्रथम पुस्तक, उत्पत्ति के 3 अध्याय में दिए गए प्रथम पाप और उसके परिणामों और प्रभावों के विवरण पर आधारित, पाप के समाधान और उस समाधान से संबंधित तीन महत्वपूर्ण प्रश्नों में से पहले दो, “उद्धार किससे और क्यों”; तथा “व्यक्ति इस उद्धार को कैसे प्राप्त कर सकता है?” को, और उनके निष्कर्षों को विस्तार से देख चुके हैं। हमने देखा कि पाप का मनुष्य जीवन और सृष्टि में प्रवेश परमेश्वर के प्रति अविश्वास, और इस कारण उसकी अनाज्ञाकारिता के द्वारा हुआ। पाप के मानव जीवन में आने और बस जाने के समय न तो कोई धर्म था, न किसी धर्म, और न किसी धार्मिक अनुष्ठान अथवा या रीति की कोई अवहेलना हुई। इसलिए पाप के समाधान के लिए भी किसी भी धर्म की कोई आवश्यकता नहीं है। परमेश्वर द्वारा दिए गए पाप के समाधान में न तो कोई धर्म, और न ही कोई धार्मिक प्रक्रिया सम्मिलित है। परमेश्वर का समाधान, मनुष्य का उसके प्रति विश्वास और उस विश्वास पर आधारित परमेश्वर की सम्पूर्ण आज्ञाकारिता एवं समर्पण पर निर्भर है। इस पूरी प्रक्रिया में मनुष्य को केवल परमेश्वर द्वारा उपलब्ध करवाए गए समाधान को अपने जीवन में कार्यान्वित करना है; उसमें अपनी कोई बात, योजना, विधि आदि नहीं सम्मिलित करनी है, और न ही किसी अन्य मनुष्य की मध्यस्थता अथवा योगदान को सम्मिलित करना है। बिना किसी धर्म अथवा किसी धार्मिक प्रक्रिया को किए, केवल और केवल प्रभु यीशु मसीह पर विश्वास, समर्पण, और आज्ञाकारिता पर आधारित परमेश्वर द्वारा दिया गया यह सीधा, साधारण समाधान बहुत से लोगों को अटपटा और अस्वीकार्य लगता है, क्योंकि उन्हें लगता है कि यह अपर्याप्त होगा; अथवा उनके धर्म के काम और धर्म का निर्वाह उन्हें परमेश्वर को स्वीकार्य बनाने के लिए पर्याप्त और उचित है, इसलिए उन्हें और किसी बात की कोई आवश्यकता नहीं है। आज से हम इस धारणा के बारे में तीसरे महत्वपूर्ण प्रश्न पर अपना विचार आरंभ करने के द्वारा देखेंगे।
उद्धार से संबंधित तीसरे महत्वपूर्ण प्रश्न, “इसके लिए यह इतना आवश्यक क्यों हुआ कि स्वयं परमेश्वर प्रभु यीशु को स्वर्ग छोड़कर सँसार में बलिदान होने के लिए आना पड़ा?” को देखने से पहले आज से हम परमेश्वर के वचन बाइबल में से तीन बड़े धर्मी और परमेश्वर की व्यवस्था का गंभीरता से पालन करने वाले लोगों के जीवन से देखेंगे कि उनके द्वारा अपने धर्म का निर्वाह, उन्हें उद्धार प्रदान करने और परमेश्वर को स्वीकार्य होने के लिए अपर्याप्त था; स्वयं उनका विवेक उन्हें बता रहा था कि उनकी इस धर्म-परायणता के बावजूद, वे अभी परमेश्वर के सम्मुख खड़े नहीं हो सकते।
पहला उदाहरण है यहूदियों के उच्च धार्मिक अगुवे, नीकुदेमुस का है:
“यूहन्ना 3:1 फरीसियों में से नीकुदेमुस नाम एक मनुष्य था, जो यहूदियों का सरदार था।
यूहन्ना 3:2 उसने रात को यीशु के पास आकर उस से कहा, हे रब्बी, हम जानते हैं, कि तू परमेश्वर की ओर से गुरु हो कर आया है; क्योंकि कोई इन चिन्हों को जो तू दिखाता है, यदि परमेश्वर उसके साथ न हो, तो नहीं दिखा सकता।
यूहन्ना 3:3 यीशु ने उसको उत्तर दिया; कि मैं तुझ से सच सच कहता हूं, यदि कोई नये सिरे से न जन्मे तो परमेश्वर का राज्य देख नहीं सकता।
यूहन्ना 3:4 नीकुदेमुस ने उस से कहा, मनुष्य जब बूढ़ा हो गया, तो क्योंकर जन्म ले सकता है? क्या वह अपनी माता के गर्भ में दूसरी बार प्रवेश कर के जन्म ले सकता है?
यूहन्ना 3:5 यीशु ने उत्तर दिया, कि मैं तुझ से सच सच कहता हूं; जब तक कोई मनुष्य जल और आत्मा से न जन्मे तो वह परमेश्वर के राज्य में प्रवेश नहीं कर सकता।
यूहन्ना 3:6 क्योंकि जो शरीर से जन्मा है, वह शरीर है; और जो आत्मा से जन्मा है, वह आत्मा है।
यूहन्ना 3:7 अचम्भा न कर, कि मैं ने तुझ से कहा; कि तुम्हें नये सिरे से जन्म लेना अवश्य है।
यूहन्ना 3:8 हवा जिधर चाहती है उधर चलती है, और तू उसका शब्द सुनता है, परन्तु नहीं जानता, कि वह कहां से आती और किधर को जाती है? जो कोई आत्मा से जन्मा है वह ऐसा ही है।
यूहन्ना 3:9 नीकुदेमुस ने उसको उत्तर दिया; कि ये बातें क्योंकर हो सकती हैं?
यूहन्ना 3:10 यह सुनकर यीशु ने उस से कहा; तू इस्राएलियों का गुरु हो कर भी क्या इन बातों को नहीं समझता?”
उपरोक्त खंड से हम नीकुदेमुस के बारे में और प्रभु यीशु की बारे में उसके विचारों को देखते हैं:
पद 1 - वह एक फरीसी था, और यहूदियों का सरदार था। प्रभु यीशु की पृथ्वी की सेवकाई के समय में, फरीसी लोग परमेश्वर के मंदिर को और परमेश्वर की व्यवस्था के अध्ययन तथा शिक्षा को समर्पित जीवन जीने वाले लोगों का समुदाय थे। उनकी जीविका परमेश्वर के मंदिर से थी, और वे परमेश्वर के वचन के अध्ययन, व्याख्या, और लोगों को उसकी शिक्षा देने में समय बिताते थे; और नीकुदेमुस इन फरीसियों का एक प्रधान या सरदार था। उसका यह परिचय बताता है कि वह परमेश्वर के वचन और धर्म की बातों के पालन में कितना संलग्न और उच्च ओहदा रखने वाला होगा।
सामान्यतः, फरीसी लोग प्रभु यीशु मसीह को पसंद नहीं करते थे, उससे बैर, द्वेष रखते थे, क्योंकि प्रभु उनके जीवन के पाखण्ड और दोगलेपन को स्पष्ट प्रकट कर देने और इसके लिए उन्हें उलाहना देने में हिचकिचाता नहीं था। प्रभु उनकी धार्मिकता को भी मानता था; किन्तु उसने यह भी बताया था कि परमेश्वर के सम्मुख उनके स्वीकार्य होने के लिए उनकी यह धार्मिकता अपर्याप्त है “क्योंकि मैं तुम से कहता हूं, कि यदि तुम्हारी धामिर्कता शास्त्रियों और फरीसियों की धामिर्कता से बढ़कर न हो, तो तुम स्वर्ग के राज्य में कभी प्रवेश करने न पाओगे” (मत्ती 5:20)। नीकुदेमुस फरीसियों में अपने ओहदे और साख को भी बनाए रखना चाहता था, और अपने मन की दुविधा का समाधान भी प्रभु से चाहता था। इसलिए वह सब की नज़रों से बचता हुआ, प्रभु से मिलने के लिए रात में आया (पद 2)।
पद 2 हमें यह भी दिखाता है कि फरीसियों का वह सरदार प्रभु यीशु का बहुत आदर करता था - उस धर्म गुरुओं के अगुवे ने प्रभु यीशु को “हे रब्बी” अर्थात “हे गुरु” कहकर संबोधित किया। साथ ही उसने यह भी स्वीकार किया कि:
प्रभु यीशु परमेश्वर की ओर से गुरु होकर आया है;
परमेश्वर प्रभु यीशु के साथ है;
यह बात उन चिह्नों से प्रमाणित हो जाती है जो प्रभु यीशु करता था।
कुल मिलाकर, प्रभु यीशु के प्रति नीकुदेमुस के मन और व्यवहार में बहुत आदर और भक्ति का भाव था। इसी कारण वह प्रभु के पास अपनी समस्या के समाधान के लिए आया था - अपने सारे ज्ञान, समझ, ओहदे, और दूसरों को परमेश्वर के वचन की शिक्षा देने वाला होने के बावजूद, उसका मन शान्त नहीं था; उसे यह निश्चय नहीं था कि वह परमेश्वर के राज्य में प्रवेश करने भी पाएगा या नहीं - उसके बारे में कही गई उपरोक्त बातों में से किसी ने भी उसे उसके अनन्त भविष्य के बारे में कोई शान्ति या संतुष्टि नहीं दी थी। वह प्रभु से इस उलझन का समाधान जानना चाहता था।
पद 3 में प्रभु यीशु उससे और कोई बात करने के स्थान पर, सीधे उसके मन की बेचैनी को संबोधित करता है, उसे यह जता देता है कि उसकी बेचैनी के बारे में उसे पता है। प्रभु उस धर्म-गुरु को, जो प्रभु यीशु का भी बहुत आदर करता था, स्पष्ट शब्दों में कह देता है, “मैं तुझ से सच सच कहता हूं, यदि कोई नये सिरे से न जन्मे तो परमेश्वर का राज्य देख नहीं सकता” - अर्थात, उसकी धार्मिकता, परमेश्वर के वचन का ज्ञान और समझ, धार्मिक समुदाय में उसका ओहदा, प्रभु यीशु मसीह के प्रति उसका आदर - न तो इनमें से कुछ भी, और न ही ये सब मिलाकर भी, उसके मन की समस्या का समाधान थे। वह अभी तक भी परमेश्वर के राज्य में प्रवेह पाने के लिए योग्य थे, और बिना नया जन्म पाए वह परमेश्वर के राज्य को देख भी नहीं सकता था!
पद 4, 5 - नीकुदेमुस प्रभु के प्रत्युत्तर से हक्का-बक्का रह गया। उसके विचारों में “जन्म” का एक ही अर्थ था, और वह उसी के अनुसार प्रभु से प्रश्न करता है, उससे जानना चाहता है कि दोबारा जन्म लेना कैसे संभव हो सकता है? तब प्रभु यीशु उसे “नया जन्म” का अभिप्राय बताता है - नीकुदेमुस जिस जन्म की बात कर रहा था वह शारीरिक जन्म था; प्रभु जिस नए जन्म की बात कह रहा था, वह जल और परमेश्वर के आत्मा द्वारा आत्मिक जन्म था, जो व्यक्ति को स्वेच्छा से, अपने निर्णय के साथ लेना होता है। शारीरिक जन्म स्वाभाविक जन्म है जो मनुष्य शरीर की रीति के अनुसार लेता है; नया जन्म आत्मिक जन्म है जिसके लिए मनुष्य को समझ-बूझ के साथ व्यक्तिगत निर्णय लेना होता है। साथ ही प्रभु यीशु ने यह भी कहा, जब तक कोई नया जन्म न ले “वह परमेश्वर के राज्य में प्रवेश नहीं कर सकता।” लगभग एक ही साथ प्रभु ने दो बार, व्यक्ति के परमेश्वर के राज्य के लिए योग्य गिने जाने के लिए, नए जन्म की अनिवार्यता को कहा। और वह भी एक उच्च धार्मिक अगुवे से जो परमेश्वर के वचन को अच्छे से जानता था, प्रभु का आदर करता था।
पद 6, 7 - फिर प्रभु नीकुदेमुस को शारीरिक और नए जन्म के प्रभाव को समझाता है - नया जन्म व्यक्ति का शारीरिक से आत्मिक जन्म है; अविनाशी आत्मा का मरनहार शरीर को छोड़ कर अनन्तकालीन आत्मिक स्थान में परमेश्वर के साथ रहने के लिए तैयार होने का आरंभ। और अब तीसरी बार प्रभु उससे नया जन्म लेने की अनिवार्यता को कहता है। यही दिखाता है कि प्रभु की दृष्टि में यह नया जन्म कितना महत्वपूर्ण और आवश्यक है; हर एक के लिए अनिवार्य है।
पद 8 - प्रभु फिर नया जन्म पा लेने की पहचान एक सांसारिक उदाहरण से देता है - हवा का प्रवाह। हवा दिखती नहीं है, किन्तु उसकी उपस्थिति उसके प्रवाह, उसके प्रवाह से उत्पन्न ध्वनि, और उसके प्रभावों से पता चल जाती है, प्रमाणित हो जाती है। इसी प्रकार जिसने नया जन्म पाया है, जो परमेश्वर के आत्मा और जल से जन्मा है, उसके जीवन में आए हुए परिवर्तन, उसके कार्य, उसके शब्द, बता देते हैं कि उसने नया जन्म पा लिया।
पद 9, 10 - नीकुदेमुस अभी भी असमंजस में है, उसका मन और मस्तिष्क इस अद्भुत और महान तथ्य को ग्रहण नहीं कर पा रहा है, वह फिर इन बातों के प्रति अपने अविश्वास को व्यक्त करता है। तब प्रत्युत्तर में प्रभु उससे एक और उसे हिला देने वाली बात कहता है “तू इस्राएलियों का गुरु हो कर भी क्या इन बातों को नहीं समझता?” अर्थात, “मैं जो तुझ से कह रहा हूँ, वह कोई नई बात नहीं है; वचन में विद्यमान शिक्षा, जिसका तू ज्ञाता और शिक्षक है, उसी को व्यक्त कर रहा हूँ। इसलिए, इस्राएलियों का गुरु होने के नाते, तुझे तो यह बात तुरंत समझ आ जानी चाहिए।” प्रभु यीशु नीकुदेमुस से उस समय उपलब्ध परमेश्वर के वचन, जो वर्तमान बाइबल का पुराना नियम है, उसमें लिखी हुई परमेश्वर के साथ संगति कर पाने के योग्य होने की बात (भजन 15; 51:6, 10; 73:1; आदि) कर रहा था। पुराने नियम की उन शिक्षाओं का सार था परमेश्वर के साथ धार्मिक क्रियाओं और अनुष्ठानों को करने वाले नहीं, वरन केवल शुद्ध मन वाले ही रह सकते हैं। परमेश्वर ने यशायाह 1:1-20 में धार्मिक विधियों को मनाते रहने वाले किन्तु मन और व्यवहार में सांसारिक तथा दुराचारी इस्राएलियों की इस “भक्ति” को अस्वीकार कर दिया; मलाकी 1:10 में ऐसे “धर्म” का निर्वाह करते हुए भी परमेश्वर के विमुख चलने वाले लोगों के लिए परमेश्वर ने कहा, “भला होता कि तुम में से कोई मन्दिर के किवाड़ों को बन्द करता कि तुम मेरी वेदी पर व्यर्थ आग जलाने न पाते! सेनाओं के यहोवा का यह वचन है, मैं तुम से कदापि प्रसन्न नहीं हूं, और न तुम्हारे हाथ से भेंट ग्रहण करूंगा।” नीकुदेमुस से प्रभु यही बात “नया जन्म” लेने के नाम से दोहरा रहा था - जब तक व्यक्ति मन की शुद्धता और समर्पण के साथ परमेश्वर के पास नहीं आएगा, वह परमेश्वर के राज्य में कदापि प्रवेश न करेगा; चाहे वह कितना ही विद्वान, वचन का ज्ञाता और शिक्षक, और धार्मिक क्रिया-कलापों तथा अनुष्ठानों को पूरा करने वाला क्यों न हो, लोगों में कैसा भी ओहदा और सम्मानजनक स्थान क्यों न रखता हो।
नीकुदेमुस के साथ प्रभु के वार्तालाप से प्रत्येक व्यक्ति के लिए परमेश्वर के राज्य में प्रवेश करने के लिए धर्म के निर्वाह और वचन का ज्ञाता होने के स्थान पर प्रभु के प्रति सच्चे मन से पूर्णतः समर्पित, तथा उसका आज्ञाकारी शिष्य होने की अनिवार्यता की शिक्षा हमें मिलती है। आज प्रभु यीशु की अपने शिष्यों तथा सभी लोगों के लिए यही शिक्षा है “अचम्भा न कर, कि मैं ने तुझ से कहा; कि तुम्हें नये सिरे से जन्म लेना अवश्य है” (यूहन्ना 3:7)। संभव है कि आप नीकुदेमुस के समान बहुत धर्मी, बाइबल के विद्वान और ज्ञाता, तथा शिक्षक हों, अपनी इस “धार्मिकता” के कारण समाज और अपने समुदाय में बहुत नाम और स्थान रखते हों, किन्तु नीकुदेमुस के समान ही प्रभु के कहे के अनुसार, आपको भी “नया जन्म” लेना अनिवार्य है; बिना ऐसा किए आप परमेश्वर के राज्य में प्रवेश नहीं कर सकेंगे। और यदि यह नया जन्म पाना नीकुदेमुस जैसे धर्मी व्यक्ति के लिए अनिवार्य था, तो फिर किसी अन्य “सामान्य” धर्मी व्यक्ति के लिए और कितना आवश्यक तथा अनिवार्य है।
अपने अनन्तकाल को दांव पर मत लगाइए, जोखिम मत उठाइए। स्वेच्छा, तथा सच्चे और समर्पित मन से पश्चाताप की एक छोटी प्रार्थना आपके लिए स्वर्ग के वे द्वार खोल देगी, जो आपकी अपनी “धार्मिकता” और धार्मिक रीति-रिवाज़ों का निर्वाह करना नहीं खोल सका है। अभी अवसर है, अभी प्रभु से कुछ इस प्रकार से प्रार्थना कीजिए “हे प्रभु यीशु मैं स्वीकार करता हूँ कि मैं पापी हूँ और आपकी अनाज्ञाकारिता करता रहता हूँ। मैं स्वीकार करता हूँ कि आपने मेरे पापों को अपने ऊपर लेकर, मेरे बदले में उनके दण्ड को कलवरी के क्रूस पर सहा, और मेरे लिए अपने आप को बलिदान किया। आप मेरे लिए मारे गए, गाड़े गए, और मेरे उद्धार के लिए तीसरे दिन जी उठे। कृपया मुझ पर दया करके मेरे पापों को क्षमा कर दीजिए, मुझे अपनी शरण में ले लीजिए, अपना आज्ञाकारी शिष्य बनाकर, अपने साथ कर लीजिए।” इसके विषय अंतिम निर्णय आपका है।

The Solution for Sin - Salvation - 6
In previous articles, based on the description of the first sin, its consequences, and its effects, given in chapter 3 of the first book of the Bible, Genesis, we have seen the first two of the three important questions concerning the solution of sin and their conclusions in detail. The questions we have considered are "salvation from whom and why"; and “How can a person attain this salvation?” We have seen that the entry of sin into human life and creation was through disbelief in God, which therefore led to disobeying Him. When sin entered and settled in human life, there was no religion, nor was any religion, or any religious ritual or tradition violated or disregarded. Therefore, there is no place whatsoever for any religion, or of any religious ritual or tradition, to provide the remedy for the problem of sin. Therefore, we see that neither religion, nor any religious process, is involved in the God-given solution of sin. The solution provided by God depends upon man's coming back to faith in Him and restoring the total obedience and submission to God based on that faith, as was in the Garden of Eden before sin. To successfully implement this whole process in his life, man only has to accept and apply the solution provided by God. Man is not to insert and include any of his own point of view, his plan, his method, etc., nor should there be any mediation or contribution of any other human being. This straightforward, simple solution given by God based on faith, submission, and obedience to the Lord Jesus Christ alone, without any religion or any religious process, seems awkward and unacceptable to many because they feel it would be insufficient. Or, they may think that their religious works and the fulfilling of the rituals and traditions of their religion will be sufficient and proper to make them acceptable to God, so they need not worry about doing anything else. Starting today, we will look into this assumption through the third important question.
The third important question regarding salvation is, "Why was it so necessary for this that the Lord Jesus Himself had to leave heaven and come to the world to be sacrificed?" Before we look at the answer to this question from God's Word, from today we will first look at the lives of three very religious people who followed God's Law very diligently, in order to fulfill the requirements of their religion, so that they could be acceptable to God and to have salvation through religion and religious works. But they realised that this was insufficient; their own conscience was telling them that in spite of their religiosity and piety, they were in no condition to stand before God, as righteous and deserving of entry into heaven.
The first example is that of the Jewish high religious leader, Nicodemus:
John 3:1 There was a man of the Pharisees named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews.
John 3:2 This man came to Jesus by night and said to Him, "Rabbi, we know that You are a teacher come from God; for no one can do these signs that You do unless God is with him."
John 3:3 Jesus answered and said to him, "Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God."
John 3:4 Nicodemus said to Him, "How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter a second time into his mother's womb and be born?"
John 3:5 Jesus answered, "Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God.
John 3:6 That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.
John 3:7 Do not marvel that I said to you, 'You must be born again.'
John 3:8 The wind blows where it wishes, and you hear the sound of it, but cannot tell where it comes from and where it goes. So is everyone who is born of the Spirit."
John 3:9 Nicodemus answered and said to Him, "How can these things be?"
John 3:10 Jesus answered and said to him, "Are you the teacher of Israel, and do not know these things?
From the above section we see the following about Nicodemus and about his thoughts regarding the Lord Jesus:
Verse 1 - He was a Pharisee, and the ruler of the Jews. In the time of the Lord Jesus' earthly ministry, the Pharisees were a community of people who lived a life dedicated to the temple of God and to the study and teaching of God's Law. Their livelihood came from God's temple, and they spent time studying God's Word, interpreting it, and teaching it to people; And Nicodemus was an elder or chief of these Pharisees. This introduction of him shows how diligent he would have been in the observance of the Word of God and the things about righteousness, and the high status he had attained because of this.
In general, the Pharisees did not like the Lord Jesus Christ, hated Him, were jealous of Him, because the Lord did not hesitate to expose and rebuke the hypocrisy of their lives. The Lord also recognized their righteousness of religious works and observances; but He also pointed out that their this righteousness was insufficient for them to be accepted before God “For I say to you, that unless your righteousness exceeds the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, you will by no means enter the kingdom of heaven” (Matthew 5:20). Nicodemus was in a dilemma, he wanted to maintain his position and prestige among the Pharisees, and also wanted the Lord to solve the problem of his conscience. So, for the solution to his dilemma, he came in the night to meet the Lord, avoiding being seen by others (verse 2).
Verse 2 also shows us that this leader of the Pharisees had great respect for the Lord Jesus - this leader of those religious leaders addressed the Lord Jesus as "Rabbi" or "Teacher", and also accepted that:
The Lord Jesus has come from God as a teacher;
God is with the Lord Jesus;
This is proved by the signs that the Lord Jesus used to do.
Overall, in Nicodemus's heart and attitude, there was a great deal of respect and devotion toward the Lord Jesus. That's why he had come to the Lord to have his problem solved - since in spite of all his knowledge, understanding, status, and being a teacher of God's Word to others, he was not at peace within himself. He was not sure whether he would be able to enter into the kingdom of God - none of the aforementioned things about him had given him any peace about his eternal destiny. He wanted to know the solution to the dilemma from the Lord.
In verse 3, rather than talking to him about any other thing, the Lord Jesus directly addresses the restlessness of his heart, showing to him that He knew what was in his heart. The Lord clearly says to the religious leader, who also had great respect for the Lord Jesus, "Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God" - that is to say that his righteousness, his knowledge and understanding of the Word of God, his position in the religious community, his respect for the Lord Jesus Christ – neither of these, nor even all of them put together, were the solution to his problem. As yet, he was unfit to enter God’s Kingdom, and could not even see the kingdom of God without being Born Again!
Verse 4, 5 - Nicodemus was taken aback by the Lord's response. "Birth" had only one meaning in his thoughts, and accordingly he questions the Lord, wants to know from Him how is it possible to be born again? The Lord Jesus then tells him the meaning of the "new birth" - the birth Nicodemus was referring to was the physical birth; The “new birth” that the Lord was referring to was a spiritual birth by water and the Spirit of God, which everyone has to take voluntarily, with one's own decision. The physical birth is the natural birth which a man undergoes according to the physical processes of the body; The new birth is a spiritual birth for which one has to make individual decisions with due understanding. At the same time, the Lord Jesus also said, "Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God" In the same breath, the Lord twice spoke about the absolute necessity of a new birth in order for a person to be counted eligible for entering the kingdom of God. And that too, the Lord spoke this to a high-ranking religious leader who knew God's Word well, as well as highly respected the Lord.
Verse 6, 7 - Then the Lord explains to Nicodemus the effects of the physical and the new birth - the new birth is the birth of a person from physical to spiritual life. The beginning of the imperishable soul preparing to leave the mortal body and getting ready to live with God in an eternal spiritual place. And now for the third time the Lord speaks to him about the new birth being imperative. This shows how important and necessary this new birth, or being “Born Again” is in the eyes of the Lord; it is mandatory for everyone.
Verse 8 - The Lord illustrates being Born Again with a worldly example - the blowing of the wind. The wind is not visible, but its presence is known by its activity, its blowing, the sound and effects produced by its blowing, prove its presence and work. Similarly, one who is Born Again, who is born from water and the Spirit of God, the changes in his life, his behavior, his words, show that he is Born Again.
Verse 9, 10 - Nicodemus is still confused, his heart and mind are unable to grasp and accept this wonderful and great fact, so he again expresses his disbelief about these things. Then in response the Lord says to him another shocking thing, "Are you the teacher of Israel, and do not know these things?" Implying that “What I am saying to you is nothing new; I am only expressing the teachings present in the Word, of which you know and teach. Therefore, as the teacher of the Israelites, you should be able to understand this immediately.” The Lord Jesus was speaking to Nicodemus of being able to have fellowship with God as written in the Word of God available to him at that time (Psalm 15; 51:6, 10; 73:1; etc.), i.e., the Old Testament of the current Bible. The gist of those Old Testament teachings was that not those who performed religious ceremonies and rituals, but only those with a pure heart could be in fellowship with God. God, in Isaiah 1:1-20 had rejected this "piety" of the worldly and wicked Israelites who only formally observed religious ordinances. In Malachi 1:10, God said to those who lived contrary to God while practicing such a "religion," "Who is there even among you who would shut the doors, So that you would not kindle fire on My altar in vain? I have no pleasure in you," Says the Lord of hosts, "Nor will I accept an offering from your hands." This is what the Lord was repeating to Nicodemus over and over again by asking him to be "Born Again" - unless a person comes to God with a pure mind and complete submission, he will never be able to enter the kingdom of God. No matter how learned he may be, how well he may know and teach the Word of God, and how diligently he may be performing religious activities and rituals, no matter what status and place of honor he holds among the people, and howsoever much he may respect the Lord Jesus.
The Lord's conversation with Nicodemus teaches us the necessity for each person to enter into the kingdom of God through being a faithful and obedient disciple of the Lord, rather than through following religion and having a knowledge of the Word. This is the teaching of the Lord Jesus to His disciples and all people today, “Do not marvel that I said to you, 'You must be born again” (John 3:7). As Nicodemus was, you too may be very religious, be a biblical scholar very knowledgeable, and even a great teacher of the Bible; you may be having a great name and place in society and your community because of your being "religious", but just like it was for Nicodemus, according to what the Lord said, you too must be “Born Again”. Without this you will not be able to enter the kingdom of God. And if this being “Born Again” was necessary for a highly qualified and respected righteous person like Nicodemus, then how much more necessary and imperative it is for any other "normal" righteous person.
Don't put your eternity at stake, don't take the risk. A short prayer of repentance willingly, and with a sincere and submitted heart, will open for you the gates of heaven, that your own “righteousness” and following religious customs have not been able to open for you. Now is the opportunity, if you are not yet Born Again, then a short prayer said voluntarily with a sincere heart and with heart-felt repentance for your sins, and a fully submissive attitude, “Lord Jesus, I confess that I have disobeyed You, and have knowingly or unknowingly, in mind, in thought, in attitude, and in deeds, committed sins. I believe that you have fully borne the punishment of my sins by your sacrifice on the cross, and have paid the full price of those sins for all eternity. Please forgive my sins, change my heart and mind towards you, and make me your disciple, take me with you." God longs for your company, wants to see you blessed; but to make this possible or not, is your personal decision. Will you not say this prayer now, while you have the time and opportunity to do so - the decision is yours.
