The Solution for Sin - Salvation - 1

In the Greek language in which the New Testament section of God's Word of the Bible was originally written, the word translated as 'salvation' or 'saved' means "to provide deliverance from danger or harm"; i.e., to be saved means to be delivered, to be secured. A very important thing, something that should always be kept in mind in this context, is that salvation is always given from God; No person can ever, by any means, earn God's salvation; i.e., no one by any of his efforts, can ever make himself worthy or eligible to gain or earn salvation from God. We will see and understand this in some more detail later.

In his own words, the purpose of the Lord Jesus Christ's coming to earth was to save all the people of the world from their state of being lost in their sin, to provide this deliverance, this, salvation, to all the people of the whole world "For the Son of Man did not come to destroy men's lives but to save them…” (Luke 9:56); “And if anyone hears My words and does not believe, I do not judge him; for I did not come to judge the world but to save the world” (John 12:47). There are some fundamental questions about this salvation that the Lord gives; and the answers to these questions are vital for knowing, understanding, and accepting God's plan to restore mankind to His fellowship.

These are the questions:

  • From what is this salvation, i.e., being saved, or being rescued provided; and why?

  • How does one attain this salvation?

  • To accomplish this, why was it so necessary that the Lord Jesus, Himself, had to leave heaven and come to the world to be sacrificed?

Salvation - from Whom and Why?

Yesterday we saw that God's love for man is indicated by the fact that out of the whole of His creation, man is the only one whom God created with His own hands, in His own image, and Himself breathed life into his nostrils. He not only made him a living creature, but also gave him authority over all the earth and all its things and all creatures (Genesis 1:26–28; 2:7). God used to come to the Garden of Eden to have fellowship only with Adam and Eve. But because of Adam and Eve's sin of disobedience to God, this fellowship between God and man was broken, and man came in the danger of death, that is, of eternal separation from God. This is a very important and fundamental fact, and without understanding this fact, it is impossible to understand about salvation. Because the sinless, spotless God cannot even look towards sin, let alone fellowship with sin (Habakkuk 1:13) so, that first sin, that disobedience, broke the fellowship between God and man and hinders its restoration (Isaiah 59:1- 2); man got separated away from the fellowship of God, and came into a position of being in danger of being separated from Him forever, that is, dying.

God's Word The Bible tells us that after sinning, the attitude and behavior of humans, of Adam and Eve, to come freely before the Holy God, changed. They were no longer able to have fellowship and converse with Him, they started to feel guilty in the presence of God, they tried to cover this nakedness, their shame by something appropriate and worthy in their own eyes, something they made by their own understanding, wisdom, and efforts, i.e., a covering made of fig leaves; and when God came to meet them, they hid in themselves the trees of the garden God had given to them: “Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves coverings. And they heard the sound of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God among the trees of the garden" (Genesis 3:7-8). Through this incidence, some important points about the effects of sin and changes it brought in man, are given in allegorical language:

  • The “opening of their eyes” shows the realization of their actual condition before the Holy God and the guilt of the sin they have committed.

  • “Nakedness” refers to the self-condemnation, or the sense of shame that is caused by sin. From their creation till that time, they used to meet, and fellowship with God in this naked state, but they were never ashamed of it, they never needed to cover themselves, because they too were sinless and in a holy state.

  • Their being “naked”, since the time of their creation, also indicates that they were completely open, exposed, and without any covering before God, and God always knew everything about them.

  • “Wearing coverings made of fig leaves” refers to the efforts of man to make himself presentable to God by his own efforts. Man tries to hide his shame, disobedience to God, and his state of sin, by his works of self-righteousness, his works that are good in his own eyes, through his own imagined and contrived ways. He forgets that before God his condition is always evident and exposed. He cannot hide anything from God.

  • Just as those fig leaves, in reality, were only a temporary solution - in a short time they would have withered, dried up, and fallen off, and the nakedness of man would have reappeared, therefore, they would have had to make a new provision all over again. Similarly, man's acts of self-righteousness, his own pursuit of good in his own eyes, etc. are all temporary and fallible; they can never keep him "covered" and make him worthy of being presentable to God. Man keeps on repeating his efforts again and again to come before God, but the nagging feeling of being guilty of sin does not go from his conscience.

  • Hearing the voice of God, they hid themselves in the "trees of the garden". Even today man, after covering himself in his own assumed righteousness, tries to hide himself in the things of the earth that God created. Instead of coming forward and appearing before God in his actual condition, he seeks to keep himself covered in his own contrived and fallible self-righteousness, hoping to be worthy of coming before God, and be acceptable to Him, through the vain veil of his own efforts.

Today, ask anyone, and everyone has only one excuse for not spending time in the company of God and with His Word - “Life is so busy that there is no time for these things; Whatever little we can do, we do it, otherwise the demands of the things of the world do not allow time to do all this'' - all want to hide themselves in the “trees of the garden” of the world, and excuse themselves from coming into His presence. Despite knowing very well that all the things of the world they are indulging in, are temporary, perishable, will remain here, and none of these things of the world will go along with them, none of their excuses will work before God.

Eventually the time will come in everyone's life when they will have to come before God, in their true "naked" state, and give account of everything in their lives to Him. Then their self-made “fig leaf coverings” will no longer be able to cover the condition of their sin, and will not be able to justify them by the standards of righteousness, not their own, but of God. Their actual condition is neither hidden from God, nor will ever be hidden, "Therefore judge nothing before the time, until the Lord comes, who will both bring to light the hidden things of darkness and reveal the counsels of the hearts. Then each one's praise will come from God" (1 Corinthians 4:5).

We'll look further at the situation created by the first sin in the next article. For now, a humble request, please examine your life from God's point of view, and see what your actual situation really is? Think it over, none of your own efforts and measures can hide you from God's sight; Your shame - the state of your sin is open to him. Yet, He still loves you - just as you now are; He wants to restore His fellowship with you. But making this possible is dependent upon your decision. A short prayer from a willing heart, with sincere repentance for sins, and a fully submissive attitude, “Lord Jesus, I confess that I have disobeyed You, knowingly or unknowingly, in mind, in thought, in attitude, and in deeds, and have committed sins. I believe that you have fully borne the punishment of my sins by your sacrifice on the cross, and have paid the full price of those sins for all eternity. Please forgive my sins, change my heart and mind towards you, and make me your disciple, take me with you." God longs for your company, wants to see you blessed; To make this possible or not, is your personal decision.

Bible, Sin, and Salvation – 4

Click Here for the English Translation

Consequences of Sin

In the previous three articles we have considered what is sin according to God's Word, the Bible; and what God defines to be sin. In short, the Bible states that the violation of God’s commandments, the transgression of His Law, [which includes His Ten Commandments (Exodus 20:1–20), and the Two Great Commandments (Matthew 22:35–40) upon which all of God's Commandments and all of the instructions and the teachings given by Him through His prophets are based], and every kind of iniquity or unrighteousness is sin.

The holy, sinless God cannot associate with sin; since He is so pure that He cannot even see evil “You are of purer eyes than to behold evil, And cannot look on wickedness…” (Habakkuk 1:13); Sin creates a barrier between God and man, and breaks down the fellowship "But your iniquities have separated you from your God; And your sins have hidden His face from you, So that He will not hear" (Isaiah 59:2). In all of God's creation, man is the only one whom He created in His image, with His hands, and by breathing life into him made him into a living being, and gave Him authority over all the earth and all creatures (Genesis 1:27–28; 2:7). God used to have fellowship with man, and used to visit him (Genesis 3:8). That is why God had warned the first humans, Adam and Eve, that if they ate the forbidden fruit of the Garden, they would die (Genesis 2:17; 3:3).

To die shows an irreversible separation; irreversible both in terms of human capabilities and context. When a person dies physically, he is so permanently separated from his relatives, friends, family members, and everyone in the world that he cannot return or be brought back by any human effort. The same thing is also expressed in figurative language to break ties permanently; when someone is told "from today you have died for me", it means that the relationship between them has so permanently ended, as if death has separated them. Because of the sin of disobedience towards God, committed by Adam and Eve, this fellowship between God and man was broken, and man came into the danger of death, i.e., eternal separation from God. Without clearly understanding this very important and fundamental fact, it is impossible to grasp the Biblical understanding of salvation.

Now God had two options - either to allow man to stay in his sin, and to suffer the consequences of that sin; Or, he destroys those first two humans, Adam and Eve; and then create new humans, and start the process all over again. But God loves man so much that neither of these two options were acceptable to him. Neither did He want to see man in the plight of sin, nor did He want to destroy him. He is such a loving God, that He is not pleased even with the death of the wicked. "Say to them: 'As I live,' says the Lord God, 'I have no pleasure in the death of the wicked, but that the wicked turn from his way and live. Turn, turn from your evil ways! For why should you die, O house of Israel?'" (Ezekiel 33:11).

The solution to this problem caused by sin was to either forgive the sin; or else, the one guilty of sin had to suffer the penalty of sin. It was a great dilemma; If God, in His great love for both of them, ignored the sin of Adam and Eve and left them unpunished, it would go against His true, upright, just, non-partisan character and attributes; which is never acceptable to God. If he had left them to suffer the consequences of their sin, neither his loving heart would accept it, nor would it conform to his loving, gracious, caring, and merciful character and attributes. Man's sin had put God in a position of great dilemma.

What is impossible for man is possible for God, “But He [Jesus] said, ‘The things which are impossible with men are possible with God’” (Luke 18:27). God Himself solved this seemingly impossible problem — He freely made available the way of salvation for all of mankind through faith in the Lord Jesus; about which we will see in the coming articles. When we, without any preconceived notions, and with an impartial perspective, ponder over this way of salvation created and provided by God, it immediately becomes apparent that there can be no solution to the problem of sin, that is so comprehensively beneficial to all the people of the world, absolutely free of all the man-made limits of religion-caste-clan-civilization-place etc. that divide the people.

For now, I humbly request you, if you haven't yet been saved, haven't accepted God's solution, then please do it now while you have the opportunity and time; for you never know whether this opportunity or situation will remain, or, for how long will it remain. A short prayer of submission made by you voluntarily, while sincerely repenting of your sins, “Lord Jesus, I confess that I have disobeyed You, knowingly or unknowingly, in mind, in thought, in attitude, and in deeds, and have committed sins. I believe that you have fully borne the punishment of my sins by your sacrifice on the cross, and have paid the full price of those sins for all eternity. Please forgive my sins, change my heart and mind towards you, and make me your disciple, take me with you." This sincere decision to allow the Lord to change your heart and mind, taken with an honest heart will make this life of yours and the life of the hereafter into heavenly life. The decision is yours.

     जो भी ढिठाई से मन में पाप को रखते हुए, बाहरी रीति से धर्मी बनने का ढोंग रखते हुए परमेश्वर के पास मन के इस दोगलेपन के साथ आते हैं, परमेश्वर उनसे उनके उस दोगलेपन के अनुसार व्यवहार करता है (यहेजकेल 14:3-7)।

    परमेश्वर की अनाज्ञाकारिता के संदर्भ में इसे कुछ और विस्तार से देखते हैं: इस्राएल को दी गई अपनी व्यवस्था के आरंभ में, परमेश्वर ने सभी के लिए परमेश्वर और अन्य मनुष्यों के साथ संबंधों एवँ व्यवहार को नियंत्रित करने के लिए अपनी दस आज्ञाएं दीं। ये दस आज्ञाएँ मनुष्य जीवन के प्रत्येक आयाम – परमेश्वर, परिवार और समाज से उसके संबंध एवँ व्यवहार से संबंध रखतीं हैं, उन संबंधों के लिए मार्गदर्शन करती हैं, मनुष्यों के व्यवहार को निर्धारित करती हैं। यह एक रोचक तथ्य है कि सँसार के किसी भी देश के संविधान में ऐसा कुछ भी नहीं है जो इन दस आज्ञाओं की परिधि के बाहर हो। इन दस आज्ञाओं के आरंभिक भाग में परमेश्वर ने मनुष्य के जीवन में अपने स्थान, आदर और मान को किसी भी अन्य को देना, परमेश्वर को कोई या कैसा भी भौतिक स्वरूप देना, वर्जित किया है (निर्गमन 20:1-7)। इसलिए, किसी भी व्यक्ति के द्वारा,

  • अपने जीवन में परमेश्वर को उसका वह सर्वोच्च आदर एवँ स्थान प्रदान नहीं करना, जिसका वह हकदार है;

  • अपने जीवन में परमेश्वर के स्थान पर सँसार की बातों या लोगों को अधिक महत्व देना;

What Is Sin? - 3

In the last two articles, while considering what God has taught about sin in His Word, the Bible, we have looked at some very important and fundamental things about what sin is according to the Bible. We have seen that:

  • According to the Bible, sin is not as it may be defined and explained according to any person or persons; rather, it has been defined by God Himself. God is true, eternal, omnipotent, unchanging, the same always and everywhere (Malachi 3:6; Hebrews 13:8); and all of these qualities are also present in whatever He says and does (Psalm 89:34; Ezekiel 12:28). Whatever He has said and determined only that will ultimately be followed and obeyed by all, and eventually everything will be judged, every decision will be made according to His will and statements (John 12:48; 1 Corinthians 3:11-13).

  • Sin is not merely doing something physically, but, essentially, it is to violate God's laws (1 John 3:4). Iniquity or unrighteousness of any kind is sin (1 John 5:17), no matter what the circumstances, or the purpose behind committing it.

  • That is why all such thoughts, attitudes, feelings, intentions, tendencies, actions, behaviors, etc., which are not according to the rules and standards of righteousness given by Him, and do not conform to those standards, are sin in the eyes of God.

  • Being in sin is a state of the mind and heart. Every type of sin begins in the mind, and manifests itself in physical activities in convenient circumstances and time (James 1:14–15; Mark 7:20–23). That is why in the eyes of God, sins committed in thoughts are as punishable, as sins actually committed physically (Matthew 5:22, 28).

Those who come to God with hypocrisy of heart, showing themselves to be righteous outwardly, while hiding sin in their heart, God treats them according to their hypocrisy (Ezekiel 14:3-7).

Let's look at this in some more detail in the context of disobedience towards God: At the beginning of his Law given to Israel, God gave his Ten Commandments for everyone, to govern man’s relationships and behavior with God and with other human beings. These Ten Commandments deal with each and every aspect of human life – man’s relationship and behavior with God, with family, and with society. They serve as a guide for maintaining those relationships, and for determining the mutual behavior of human beings. It is an interesting fact that there is nothing in the constitution of any country in the world, which is outside the purview of these Ten Commandments. In the opening part of these Ten Commandments, God forbids man to give His status, His honor, and His dignity to anyone else; or to make any kind of physical representation of God (Exodus 20:1–7). Therefore, for any person,

  • not to give God the highest respect and place He deserves in one’s life;

  • giving more importance to the things or people of the world than to God in one’s life; and,

  • according divine reverence to, and worshipping the true and living Creator God, the Lord who is Spirit (John 4:24), in the form of any man-made physical form represented in perishable material things, or as idols made according to man’s imagination, or considering Him to have the form of any creature created by God, etc.

are all violations of God's commandments, and therefore, are sin.

The remainder of these Ten Commandments (Exodus 20:8-20) deal with man's family and social relationships. To disobey these commandments is also a sin, since that is disobeying God's instructions for family and social relationships and responsibilities.

The Lord Jesus Christ, during his earthly ministry, was asked a question by a religious leader of the Jews who wanted to test him, and he was unable to counter the Lord's answer. This conversation is important to our current context: “Then one of them, a lawyer, asked Him a question, testing Him, and saying, "Teacher, which is the great commandment in the law?" Jesus said to him, "'You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.' This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like it: 'You shall love your neighbor as yourself.' On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets" (Matthew 22:35-40). This answer from the Lord Jesus summarizes man's expected behavior and relationship towards God and other human beings. That is why He also said that the whole Law of God is based on these two commandments. The clearly evident conclusion is that wherever any one of these commands is violated in any thought or behavior of man, there man has come to be in the state of sin; is guilty of having committed sin.

According to God's Word the Bible, since that first sin committed by man in the Garden of Eden, the tendency to sin has taken roots in man, and since then onwards, every human being in the world is born with a sin nature, with a tendency to sin, "Therefore, just as through one man sin entered the world, and death through sin, and thus death spread to all men, because all sinned" (Romans 5:12). This is very well seen and evidenced by the fact that, when we assess human behavior and actions in the context of the above-mentioned broad-ranging Biblical views of sin, it becomes apparent that in God's eyes no man is free from sin, all human beings fall into the definition of being a sinner in some way or the other. Therefore, in their natural state, all human beings have sinned in mind-attitude-thought-tendency-perspective, behavior or actions. No matter what their religion, race, country, etc. may be, all human beings fall short of the glory of God and are unworthy of fellowship with God, “for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23) And are deserving of God's punishment of sin, death, as He had said at the beginning of their creation (Genesis 2:17), "For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord" (Romans 6:23).

The divine solution to this seemingly insurmountable problem of sin, "...but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord" (Romans 6:23), we will begin to look at in the next article.

If you still haven't asked the Lord Jesus for forgiveness for your sins, you still have a chance right now. Voluntarily, with a sincere and wholly submissive heart, with sincere repentance of your sins, please say a short prayer, “Lord Jesus, I confess that I have disobeyed You, knowingly or unknowingly, in mind, in thought, in attitude, and in deeds, and have committed sins.
