Teachings Related to the Gospel – 7

We are considering teachings related to the gospel that are to be learnt and taught for the spiritual growth of the Believers and the Church. We have seen that repentance and faith in the gospel are essential for the gospel to be effective (Hebrews 4:2). Through the examples of King Josiah, Job, Paul, the devout Jews, etc. we learnt some characteristics of true heart-felt repentance, and how to recognize it in a person’s life. We have seen that a major characteristic of true repentance is the evidently changed life of the penitent person; today we will consider some aspects of this change that repentance brings about.

The Apostle Paul, writing to the Christian Believers in Rome speaks to them of two things that are a necessary aspect of this change that is expected in the Believer’s life. Paul says “I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service. And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God” (Romans 12:1-2). The manner of Paul’s writing this passage, his beseeching them on the basis of God’s mercies, and calling it their ‘reasonable service’ indicate that these changes do not happen automatically, they have to be brought about. Though they are essential for the Christian life of the Believer, yet like many other things associated with Christian living, they are things that the Believer has to actively develop or cultivate in his life.

The first thing mentioned here is consecration and complete surrender to God, while simultaneously disassociating themselves from the world and the things of the world. To convey this message, Paul is here using the example of the sacrifices offered under the Law to God. Just as the sacrificial animal that had been chosen, prepared, offered and sacrificed on the altar never went back into the same state it had been brought from, similarly the person who submits himself to the Lord must not go back into the same worldly state that he came out of. Paul here uses an apparently self-contradictory term ‘living sacrifice,’ i.e., dead in one sense, yet alive in another – dead to one, accepted and living to another. This presents to us a characteristic of the change that ought to happen in a person on his accepting the gospel and repentance.

Although, from the moment of accepting the gift of salvation through repenting and believing in the gospel, the person becomes fully consecrated, fully submitted to God, wholly belonging to God; yet, the Holy Spirit had Paul write to the Believers that ‘you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God,’ i.e., God also wants that the Believer does this as a voluntary act and not as a compulsion. In other words, this change comes with the voluntary active participation of the Believer in the process of change; not as a coercion or imposition by God. Paul also reminds the Believer their doing this is not something exceptional or something great; rather, in comparison to what God has done and is doing for them, the Believer’s surrendering and submitting to Him is a ’reasonable service,’ merely a rational reaction on their part towards God. Everyone who truly repents and sincerely accepts the gospel should also live with the realization that he now belongs to the Lord, is consecrated to Him, and must live a life that demonstrates this consecration and submission (2 Corinthians 5:15, 17).

The second thing that Paul says to the Roman Believers is that the internal change wrought in their minds by their repentance and acceptance of the gospel, should be seen externally by a transformation in their life. In other words, with their repentance and submission, God renews their minds – that which controls their bodies, brings it in conformity to their heavenly calling and responsibility. Now they have the responsibility to demonstrate their internally renewed mind, by external physical works; i.e., not by mere verbal assertions, but by their works. Generally speaking this becomes evident by their no longer conforming to the ways of the world, but by determining and bringing their bodies under the control of their renewed mind. Instead of their bodies, under the influence of worldly lusts and desires, controlling their minds, their spiritually renewed minds must control their bodies towards the right direction.

We will look at some more aspects of this changed life in the next article.

If you have not yet accepted the discipleship of the Lord, make your decision in favor of the Lord Jesus now to ensure your eternal life and heavenly blessings. Where there is obedience to the Lord, where there is respect and obedience to His Word, there is also the blessing and protection of the Lord. Voluntarily repent of your sins and ask the Lord Jesus for forgiveness of your sins, voluntarily and sincerely surrender yourself to Him - this is the only way to salvation and heavenly life. You only have to say a short but sincere prayer to the Lord Jesus Christ willingly and with a penitent heart, and at the same time completely commit and submit your life to Him. You can also make this prayer and submission in words something like, “Lord Jesus, I am sorry for my sins and repent of them. I thank you for taking my sins upon yourself, paying for them through your life.  Because of them you died on the cross in my place, were buried, and you rose again from the grave on the third day for my salvation, and today you are the living Lord God and have freely provided to me the forgiveness, and redemption from my sins, through faith in you. Please forgive my sins, take me under your care, and make me your disciple. I submit my life into your hands." Your one prayer from a sincere and committed heart will make your present and future life, in this world and in the hereafter, heavenly and blessed for eternity.

Teachings Related to the Gospel – 6

At the beginning of this series, after the preliminary considerations, we had seen that there are three categories of Biblical teachings that are essential for the growth of every Christian Believer and of the Church. These are teachings related to the gospel; the six basic teachings in Hebrews 6:1-2; and teachings related to Christian living and behavior. Of these, we have started considering the teachings related to the gospel from the Bible, and saw that the gospel is about the Kingdom of God, and not about any worldly prosperity or gains. Moreover, for the gospel to be effective, it requires that the person accepting the gospel repents and believes in it, with heartfelt honesty and sincerity (Hebrews 4:2). Therefore, we have started to learn about what God’s Word the Bible says about these two essentials, repentance and believing, related to the gospel; and are presently studying about repentance.

In the last two articles, through the example of King Josiah, and then through some other examples we saw that true repentance is evidenced by a changed life, by developing a love for God’s Word, and a practical active desire to have others also believe in the gospel. We concluded the last article by seeing that repentance is God’s commandment for all of mankind, with no exceptions for any one, irrespective of their religion or belief or religious status. Today we will see about the basis, or the effective reason that brings about this kind of repentance and its consequent changes; and, then will see something about what God’s Word says about the changes.

Paul, under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit wrote, “For godly sorrow produces repentance leading to salvation, not to be regretted; but the sorrow of the world produces death” (2 Corinthians 7:10). So, we see from here that there are two kinds of repentance that are displayed by the world; one comes through a ‘godly sorrow;’ and the other is through ‘the sorrow of the world.’ The outcomes of these two kinds of sorrow or the repentance because of them, are entirely different, in fact are diametrically opposite. The one because of a ‘godly sorrow’ leads to salvation, i.e., eternal life and its related benefits; whereas the one which is through ‘the sorrow of the world’ leads to death. In the examples we have seen in preceding articles, i.e., of King Josiah, Job, Paul, devout Jews etc., we saw how this ‘godly sorrow’ worked in their lives. All of them were very religious, and zealous for God, and were very active in their religious works and commitments, in fulfilling God’s Law from beforehand. But when they were convicted, either by God’s Word or by being confronted by God, or by the Lord Jesus, they immediately realized that despite all their very sincere religiosity and a diligent commitment to religious works, their actual spiritual state was one of being unworthy of coming in the presence of God or of entering His kingdom.

With this realization, they took a very crucial decision, a decision which made all the difference in the outcome, turned it in their favor – they simply threw themselves down at God’s feet, just as they were, trusting Him to be merciful, longsuffering and forgiving, and one who would act according to these characteristics. This is what ‘godly sorrow’ means – as soon as one realizes his actual spiritual state from God’s perspective, then, instead of trying to justify himself, or trying to be more religious, more committed to religious works, just surrendering oneself totally into God’s hands. Then, with a fully committed heart, to seek God’s will for the next step to be taken. And not trying to be ‘better’ or worthy of being accepted by some more works, or some other self-contrived devices.

Had they pledged to work more or better to become acceptable to God, that would have been a tacit assertion that they can be good or righteous enough to enter heaven by their own means and methods, by their own works. This would never be possible, nor would ever be feasible, because it immediately brings in contradictions in God’s Word – it would go contrary to Isaiah 64:6 “…we are all like an unclean thing, And all our righteousnesses are like filthy rags…” It would also negate the Lord’s exhortation to Nicodemus, that without being Born-Again he can never enter the Kingdom of God (John 3:3, 5, 7), and by implication is that without being Born-Again, no one else can enter heaven either; and would also go against the other similar references from God’s Word. Moreover, as evidenced by the lives of Job, King Josiah, Paul, Nicodemus, the devout Jews etc., if their righteousness by works was inconsequential for salvation, then what more can any other person do, that they had not already done, only to realize how woefully short they actually were of the standards of God’s holiness?

On the other hand, ‘the sorrow of the world’ is a false, a make-believe kind of sorrow, an outward dramatic demonstration of sorrow, more for showing to the world, than because of a sincere change of heart or remorse for the wrongs they have done. It is something like when a pick-pocket or thief is caught in the act, he immediately starts begging for mercy, apologizing, telling sob-stories to justify his committing the wrong, making promises of never doing it again, etc. But once he is set free, he returns to doing the same things again. All his apologies, begging for mercy, sob-stories, etc. were just an eyewash meant to fool others; there was no real remorse or sorrow in him for what he had done. A similar make-believe show of repentance before God by a sinner, may fool some people, and even fool the sinner himself making him believe that he has repented, but can never fool God, for God knows those who are His (2 Timothy 2:19). And as we have seen, genuine repentance is evidenced by a changed life of departing from iniquity, not by mere spoken words. This kind of ‘the sorrow of the world’ only means that the person is still in his sin, has not actually surrendered his life to the Lord. Therefore, since he has not received the gift of eternal life from the Lord Jesus, he will have to receive the wages of sin, i.e., death (Romans 6:23).

In the next article we will consider the change that true repentance brings in a person’s life.

Teachings Related to the Gospel – 5

In the previous article, we had seen through the example of King Josiah that true repentance is evidenced by a changed life. These changes are evident in the person’s life. Such a person gives up the old things and behavior, and brings in new things and behavior in life, things that are in accordance with God’s Word and will (Romans 12:2; 2 Corinthians 5:17). Not only does the person change, but there comes a desire in that person to see others, who are still in their errors repent and change as well. We also saw from Josiah’s example, this has nothing to do with being ‘religious’ or ‘devout;’ Josiah was both ‘religious’ as well as ‘devout’ and already was doing things that were right in the sight of God. He used to walk in the ways of his forefather David (2 Chronicles 34:2), and was zealously destroying all pagan worship in his kingdom (2 Chronicles 34:3-8) at the time God’s Word was read to him. On hearing God’s Word, despite his being religious, devout, zealous for the Lord in a manner that hardly any of us can ever think of being, he immediately realized his actual state as per the standards of God’s Word. He was convicted by God’s Word and he came down in repentance (2 Chronicles 34:19). This repentance became evident by his changed life and works – John the Baptist had demanded this very thing of the Pharisees (Matthew 3:7-8).

We see the same thing happening to Job, a person who was blameless, upright, feared God and shunned evil (Job 1:1), and for whom twice God says that there was none like him on earth (Job 1:8; 2:3). Throughout the Book of Job, Job keeps holding on to his grounds of being blameless and righteous and continually keeps disproving the charges being levelled against him by his friends. But eventually, when he is confronted by God, he immediately realises his actual condition, and comes down in repentance before God, calling himself vile and abhorring himself (Job 40:3-4; 42:5-6).

So, those who equate being ‘religious’ and ‘devout’ as evidence of being repentant, or as evidence of being acceptable to God, can be in a gross misunderstanding. Similarly, those who think that their good works, their fulfilling religious rituals, feasts and festivals, and carrying out ‘religious works’ of various kinds qualifies them as those who are ‘repentant’ are caught up in a serious misconception. All such people need to think again about these gross errors that they are living in. The Pharisees whom John the Baptist rebuked, calling them a ‘brood of vipers’ were very religious people; even the Lord Jesus acknowledged their righteousness, but also called it inadequate to enter the Kingdom of God (Matthew 5:20). To Nicodemus, the leader of these very religious and pious Pharisees, the Lord Jesus bluntly stated that unless he was Born-Again, he would not even see the Kingdom of God, let alone enter it (John 3:3, 5, 7). To the devout Jews (Acts 2:5) gathered in Jerusalem to fulfil their religious obligations and requirements, when they were cut to their hearts on listening to Peter’s sermon on the day of Pentecost, and wanting to know what to do to rectify the situation, they cried out to the Lord’s disciples. Peter's answer to them was for them to repent (Acts 2:37-38). Paul was a very religious Pharisee and was very zealous for God, so much so that he could boldly claim that as far as the Law was concerned, he was blameless (Philippians 3:4-6); but when confronted by the Lord Jesus, came down in repentance, and his life changed altogether.

So, please do not fall for this ploy of Satan, who deceives by making people think that by being religious, devout, and pious, by fulfilling religious rituals and works, they automatically also become repentant – no way; this never happens! As the above examples from God’s Word amply illustrate, being religious is not the same as being repentant. And everyone, even the followers of God – the then Jews and their religious leaders, and now the Christians and their religious leaders also, everyone must repent; for this is the commandment of God to everyone (Acts 17:29-31). This command is not optional, and neither is it meant only for some and not for others. The command of God is that all men everywhere must repent (v. 30), and that is exactly what it means – all men everywhere.

We will see some more aspects of repentance in the next article.

If you have not yet accepted the discipleship of the Lord, make your decision in favor of the Lord Jesus now to ensure your eternal life and heavenly blessings. Where there is obedience to the Lord, where there is respect and obedience to His Word, there is also the blessing and protection of the Lord. Voluntarily and sincerely repent of your sins and ask the Lord Jesus for forgiveness of your sins, voluntarily and sincerely, surrender yourself to Him - this is the only way to salvation and heavenly life.

Teachings Related to the Gospel – 4

While concluding the previous article, we had said that in today’s article we will look at a characteristic of true, sincere repentance, by which we can recognize it. Wherever there is true repentance, there will also be some works in conformity with it, it will be evidenced by a changed life and a corresponding change in behavior and attitude; as John the Baptist said to the Pharisees while refusing to baptize them “Therefore bear fruits worthy of repentance” (Matthew 3:8). We see an example of this from the Old Testament, from the life of King Josiah, a devout king of Judah; please open your Bibles to 2 Chronicles 34, and read along the verses being pointed out.

Josiah became King of Judah as an eight year old child (v.1). But he, by emulating his forefather, King David (v. 3) did what was right in the sight of the Lord (v.2). He strived to turn the Israelites back toward God from their idolatry and worldliness (vs.3-7), and repair the Temple of God that was in a very bad state (v.8).

During the repairs, the High Priest, Hilkiah, found Moses’s  Book of the Law of the Lord (v.14); and Hilkiah sent the Book to the King through Shaphan the Scribe. And, Shapahan casually presented it to the King as ‘a book’ (v. 18). Shaphan’s main attention was not on finding Moses’s Book of God’s Law, but on reporting about the work given to them by the King (vs 15-16). Just imagine the state of spiritual decline the Israelites had fallen into. The High Priest and the Scribe, neither possessed, nor knew about the Book of the Law; they came across the book just by chance, they had not gone searching for it in its expected place. This implies they never read or learnt or taught from it. Moreover, they had allowed the Temple of God to go into a state of utter disrepair, implying its state of disuse. They had never tried to get it repaired, even now, not the religious leaders but it was the King, who wanted to get the Temple repaired.

For Shaphan, though a Scribe, the Book of the Law does not seem to hold any importance; for him it is not ‘the Book’ but simply ‘a book’, who read it to the King (v.18). Because it held no importance for Shaphan, therefore, reading of God’s Word had no effect upon Shaphan; but in contrast it did affect the godly King Josiah, who repented (v.19). On hearing God’s Word Josiah realized two things; firstly, despite his godliness he still fell short of what was expected of him as a leader of God’s people, therefore he immediately came down in repentance before God. And secondly, that the High Priest and Scribe serving with him could not be relied upon to guide him properly about spiritual matters. So, he sent them to Huldah, the prophetess of God, to find out God’s will and instructions about what to do (v. 22).

Through Huldah, King Josiah learns of the disaster looming over God’s people, because of their having fallen away into worldliness and idolatry (vs. 23-25). It was Josiah’s reverential attitude towards God, his personal repentance, his loving and honoring God’s Word, and then getting his people, priests, and Levites to turn to God (vs. 30-33), that not only saved him from the calamity that was impending upon Judah and Jerusalem but also postponed it till after his death (vs. 27-28).

Through the example of Josiah, we see that true or sincere repentance is evidenced through works, practically, in a changed life. The life of the repenting person changes, and he wants to see this change in the lives of the others as well. The repentant person has a love, reverence, and obedience to God’s Word.

We will continue to understand and learn about repentance in the next article.
