The Law and the Christian Life - 9

(i) परमेश्वर और उसकी बातों का अपरिवर्तनीय तथा अटल और सर्वदा लागू रहना;

(ii) मनुष्यों की तुलना में स्वर्गदूतों के कुछ गुण;

Why can't the Law save us? (4)

Why is man incapable of confronting Satan? (3)

In the previous articles, we have been seeing that man is absolutely incapable of successfully confronting Satan in his own strength and intelligence, whether in his natural and unregenerate state or even after being saved. A saved man can face Satan’s tactics, and overcome him, with God's help, so long as he is obedient to God. But as soon as he transgresses the limits set by God, through any of his words or behavior, through any kind of disobedience, Satan bites him (Ecclesiastes 10:8), ensnaring him in sin. In analyzing the reasons for why man is unable to face Satan, and unable to obey God's law despite having it in his hands, and other related issues, in the previous article we had begun to look at three things whose conclusions, and considering them along with some other points of Scripture will help us to reach the answers to the above questions. These three are:

(i) God and His Word are unchanging and what He grants always remains irrevocable and in effect;

(ii) Some characteristics of angels as compared to humans;

(iii) The comparative level or place of humans and angels.

In the previous article, we saw and understood the first of these, that God and His Word are unchanging and things He grants always remain irrevocable, with some Biblical examples. Today we will look at and understand the other two things with some Biblical examples.

(ii) Some characteristics of angels as compared to humans: God’s Word states that the angels are more powerful than humans; and angels, in general, have been called mighty or powerful. Whereas in comparison, only a few human beings have been powerful, and unlike the angels, all human beings, in general, have never been called mighty. Consider three Bible verses in this context:

Psalm 103:20 "Bless the Lord, you His angels, Who excel in strength, who do His word, Heeding the voice of His word."

2 Thessalonians 1:7 "and to give you who are troubled rest with us when the Lord Jesus is revealed from heaven with His mighty angels"

2 Peter 2:11 "Whereas angels, who are greater in power and might, do not bring a reviling accusation against them before the Lord." If we look at this verse in its context, along with verses 9-10, it is apparent that angels are naturally greater in strength and power than humans.

(iii) The comparative level or place of humans and angels: Man is incapable of facing Satan, because from his creation he has not only been made less powerful than angels, but of a lesser status than the angels as well. This has to be understood a little more closely:

The Lord Jesus Christ, in his physical form on earth, was also wholly God, and wholly human – while being God, He emptied Himself when He came to earth in the form of man, and took upon Himself the likeness of man (Philippians 2:5-8).

Regarding His status as a man on earth, also consider Hebrews 2:6-10: “6: But one testified in a certain place, saying: "What is man that You are mindful of him, Or the son of man that You take care of him? 7: You have made him a little lower than the angels; You have crowned him with glory and honor, and set him over the works of Your hands. 8: You have put all things in subjection under his feet." For in that He put all in subjection under him, He left nothing that is not put under him. But now we do not yet see all things put under him. 9: But we see Jesus, who was made a little lower than the angels, for the suffering of death crowned with glory and honor, that He, by the grace of God, might taste death for everyone. 10: For it was fitting for Him, for whom are all things and by whom are all things, in bringing many sons to glory, to make the captain of their salvation perfect through sufferings."

Here in verses 8–10 it is clear that this section is about the Lord Jesus, and in this context the phrase "Son of Man" in verse 6 is also for the Lord Jesus, which was also a name used for Him and by Him in the Gospels, He often called Himself by this name (e.g., Matthew 8:20; 9:6; 12:8; Matthew 16:13). Then in verse 7 it is written about him that when He was sent to earth, God made the "Son of man" i.e. Lord Jesus "a little lower than the angels". Implying that in His earthly body, being in the likeness of humans, He became somewhat lower than the angels (not singular 'angel' - i.e. not a specific angel; but plural 'angels' - i.e. all angels). This means that man, in whose likeness the Lord Jesus came to this earth, is not only less powerful than the angels in his natural state, as we have seen above; but is also of a lower status than them. That is why one of the God-given honor for saved humans is that angels are made ministering spirits, to serve them (Hebrews 1:14). If, in the natural order of creation, man already possessed a superiority over angels, then how could it be special honor for humans to have angels as ministering spirits for them? But having been saved, having become children of God (John 1:12-13), the created order of superiority, for those who are saved is now changed; now the saved man is elevated above and the obedient angels are made lower than him.

Now the conclusions of these three things are before us:

(i) Whatever God has said, His Word, the rights, privileges, and gifts given by Him are irrevocable, unchanging, and He does not take them back.

(ii) Man since his creation is less powerful than the angels.

(iii) Human beings, in their natural state, are lower than the angels in the hierarchy of created beings. After he is saved, this order changes for the saved man, in context of God’s obedient angels, and the saved man is elevated to a higher status than angels. But all the rest of the human beings remain at a lower level than the angels.

In the next article, we'll look at the practical application and implications of these conclusions, by also taking them along with some other things. Through these we will see and understand why although humans are unable to face Satan, continue to fall in sin time and again, yet God calls this tendency of the unregenerate man to sin something done in "times of ignorance" in Acts 17:30 and is reluctant to punish him for it; rather, asking him to repent of his sins and be saved from the punishment.

But for now, we need to look into our lives and see whether we are making good use of this opportunity given to us by God, or, are we ignoring Him and His benevolence? Have we sincerely committed our lives to Him, repenting of our sins or not? Or, have we fallen for Satan's deceit, and we are still assuming being good and righteous in the eyes of God through vain and ineffective things like our religion, family, our following and fulfilling religious rituals and customs since our birth, by our being obedient to our religious leaders, etc. and falsely believe that we will be considered acceptable to Him, worthy of entering heaven with Him? Today, now, while having the time and opportunity to repent of sins, make the right decision, repent of your sins, submit your life to the Lord Jesus Christ, ask Him for forgiveness of sins, become a child of God. It may be too late afterwards.

If you have not yet accepted the discipleship of the Lord, make your decision in favor of the Lord Jesus now to ensure your eternal life and heavenly blessings. Where there is obedience to the Lord, respect and obedience to His Word, there is also the blessing and protection of the Lord. By asking the Lord Jesus for forgiveness of your sins, voluntarily submit yourself sincerely and with a committed heart to his Lordship in your life - this is the only way to salvation and heavenly life. You have to say only a short but sincere prayer to the Lord Jesus Christ, willingly and meaningfully, while simultaneously completely committing your life to Him. You can say this prayer of repentance and submission in a manner something like this, “Lord Jesus, I thank you for taking my sins upon yourself for their forgiveness and because of them you died on the cross in my place, were buried, you rose again on the third day for my salvation, and today you are the living Lord God. Please forgive my sins, take me under your shelter, and make me your disciple. I submit my life into your hands." Your one prayer from a sincere and submissive heart will make your present and future life, in this world and in the hereafter, heavenly and blessed for eternity.

The Law and the Christian Life - 8

(i) परमेश्वर और उसकी बातों का अपरिवर्तनीय तथा अटल और सर्वदा लागू रहना;

(ii) मनुष्यों की तुलना में स्वर्गदूतों के कुछ गुण;

Why can't the Law save us? (3)

Why is man incapable of confronting Satan? (2)

We ended the previous article with two very important questions - first, why man is unable to overcome Satan and his tricks, is incapable of confronting him; and second, that despite the unsaved, unregenerate man does what is disgusting and unacceptable in the sight of God, yet, according to Acts 17:30, God is willing to ignore that sinful behavior by calling them "works in times of ignorance", if man repents. Instead of judging and punishing them, why is He willing to give all human beings an opportunity to escape the serious consequences of those actions? Today we will begin to look at the first of these, why man is not able to overcome Satan by any of his power or device. As said in the previous article, to understand this, we have to look at and understand some of the attributes of God, about some of the things He has created, and some things related to angels; and then put the conclusions together, to get and understand the answers to these questions in their context. These things are:

(i) God and His Word are unchanging and what He grants always remains irrevocable and in effect;

(ii) Some characteristics of angels as compared to humans;

(iii) The comparative level or place of humans and angels.

Today we will look at the first of these, God and His Word and things that He grants are always irrevocable and unchangeable, and understand this from Biblical examples.

(i) God and His Word are unchanging and what He grants always remains irrevocable and in effect: God is the perfect God, there is nothing lacking in Him, nor is there anything that may ever need to be rectified, nor can an “advanced version” of Him ever come into existence, because there is nothing in Him that could require any further improvement. God is not subject to time, time is subject to God; 2 Timothy 1:9 states that ‘time began’, but the grace of the Lord Jesus predates the beginning of time (the original Greek word used in 2 Timothy 1:9 is ‘chronos’, meaning time; in Hindi It is translated as 'सनातन', and in some English translations it is translated as 'worlds'; but its literal meaning is 'time'). That's why God refers to Himself as "I am who I am"; And He refers to Himself as "I am" in context of time, never in the past tense nor ever in the future tense, but always only in the present (Exodus 3:14; John 8:58). It implies that God is always there, for everything and every situation, in the manner required. God does not change, and neither what He says ever changes, nor does His Word ever change (Hebrews 1:12; 13:8; Revelation 1:8; Psalm 102:27; Malachi 3:6). Once He has said, He will also fulfill it (Numbers 23:19). God never takes back what he once gives (Romans 11:29; Psalm 89:34). If He were to take it back, it would imply that He had made a mistake in giving, and now something unexpected or unforeseen has happened, something that He had not thought about, and so now He has to change His decision. So whatever God has given, He has given it very thoughtfully and with the keeping of His eternal plans and purposes in mind; He will never go back on His decision.

Let's look at some examples from the Bible of God's Word about this:

  • At the time of creation, God gave Adam and Eve authority over the whole earth and all living things (Genesis 1:27-30). Later, for the convenience of man, God planted for him the Garden of Eden with good trees (Genesis 2:8-9). Man was cast out of the Garden of Eden for sinning, but neither was he taken away from the earth, nor was the authority granted to him over all the earth and its creatures taken away from him. Even today, generally all living creatures exhibit a fear of humans, they do not immediately come in front of humans, but tend to shy away from them.

  • When Abraham and Sarah were given the ability to have children long after crossing their physical age of child-bearing, this ability was not taken back from them. Abraham afterwards not only could marry and have concubines, and he also begot many children from them (Genesis 25:1-6).

  • The first king of Israel, Saul, was ordained by God. Even when he became unfit to be king, the kingdom of Israel was not taken from him until his death. During his reign, David, the anointed of God, suffered greatly, and kept running all over the country, to save his life from Saul. Twice the opportunity came for David to kill Saul, but despite the provocation of his companions, the Spirit of God who guided him kept David from killing Saul. It was only when Saul's lifetime from God came to an end, that David became king, not before.

  • The Jews had to endure 430 years of slavery in Egypt. They came out of Egypt on the very day that this time was over (Exodus 12:40-41). Earlier, when Moses tried to rescue them, he was unsuccessful, but when the time was over, it was Moses who took them out.

  • Aaron made the Israelites commit idolatry by making a golden calf (Exodus chapter 32) and God was furious with him; But he was not disapproved of being the anointed high priest (Leviticus 8:1-9).

  • Moses was not allowed to enter Canaan because of his disobedience (Numbers 27:12–14; Deuteronomy 3:23–26). Nevertheless, he retained the authority to lead the Israelites to the border of Canaan. This authority was given to Joshua only at the end of Moses' lifetime (Deuteronomy 3:28).

  • When the Lord Jesus cast out demons from the people living in the region of the Gadarenes, the demons pleaded not to be persecuted before their appointed time (Matthew 8:28-29); i.e., they could not be sent before their appointed time into the place of sorrow.

  • Lucifer was the archangel, second only to God (the ‘Bright and Morning Star’ in some translations and Lucifer in others), before he was cast down because of sin and became Satan (Isaiah 14:12-15; Ezekiel 28:12). -17). Even after his expulsion from heaven, the privilege of going to heaven to converse with God was not taken away from him (Job 1:6-7, 12; 2:1-6), nor have his powers been taken away from him; He continues to work against God and his people through those very powers even today.

  • Lucifer was the most superior archangel, in hierarchy, all the others were inferior to him. Even after he was cast out of heaven, Michael the archangel of God could not disrespectfully argue with him, or scold him directly, but simply said "Lord rebuke you" (Jude 1:9), because in terms of the original hierarchy Michael was lower than Lucifer, and only God was above Lucifer.

  • God never takes back his salvation from the one whom He once saves, whom He accepts as His child. The saved one, because of disobedience and sin will come under chastisement, lose eternal rewards, be deprived of blessings, but will never lose his God given salvation.

We'll cover the two other points in subsequent articles; But for now, we, especially Christians, have to take a very serious look into our lives, and evaluate how we are making use of the facilities, things, salvation, and gifts given by God to us? Are we cognizant of them, and are we using them for the glory of God? Are we expressing these God given blessings to the people of the world through our lives? It is necessary to rectify this, because we will certainly be called to account for all of these things. No one will escape giving his account for what God has given him. So, while there is time and opportunity, we will do well to rectify whatever needs to be corrected in our outlook and behavior towards what God has given us; and live a life of obedience to Him for our good, our blessings, and to remain safe from Satan and his devices.

The Law and the Christian Life - 7

Why can't the law save us? (2)

Why is man incapable of confronting Satan? (1)

In the previous articles we have seen that though the only one who is good, i.e., God, gave his Law to man, still man could neither fulfill it, nor could man become good through it. There are two main reasons for this, the first is that man is inherently incapable of fulfilling it; and the second is that the Law was never given to be obeyed (we will talk and understand about getting life through the observance of the Law as is written in many places in the Bible, in the later articles). The Law was given to show the standard of God's goodness, righteousness, and holiness, and for it to be the scale to measure where man stands vis-à-vis God's goodness, righteousness, and holiness. We also saw that neither those who had the Law, i.e., God's chosen people, the Jews; nor the rest of the people of the world, i.e., those whom God gave the freedom to do according to their own will and understanding - though He placed before them His evidences in His creation and also gave them the wisdom to understand them; yet, neither of them could become righteous by any of their efforts, both equally failed to measure up to God’s righteousness.

It is an evident fact that man cannot successfully confront Satan on his own, by any of his powers or devices; not even by his piety, and neither after being reconciled into fellowship with God. He is victorious over Satan only when he has God's help and guidance, through obedience to Him, and confronts Satan in the manner God has shown him to do. But whenever the God's people, even the saved Christians, step out of God's ways, teachings, and commandments, they inevitably fall into the trap of Satan's devices and commit sin. Whenever they live according to the attitude of their flesh or of the ‘old man’, they face certain defeat from Satan. After we are saved, if we do not walk according to the leading of the Holy Spirit, are disobedient to God’s Word, we succumb to Satan’s devious tactics – the one who breaks through the wall is bitten by the snake (Ecclesiastes 10:8). Let us look at some examples from the lives of God's people, as given in the Word of God:

  • In the Garden of Eden, Adam and Eve were in a sinless, unblemished state, and were in fellowship with God, conversing with Him. But even in that state of holiness, as soon as Adam and Eve listened to Satan instead of God, they fell into sin and dragged their future offspring, all of mankind into sin too.

  • Abraham, instead of trusting God's Word, acted in accordance with his wife's instructions because of her impatience and plan, and fathered Ishmael; the consequences, the Israelites are suffering to this day.

  • David, the man after God's own heart, and the renowned Psalmist of many hymns of praise and worship of God, chose to stay at home, rather than being on the battlefield to lead his soldiers, peeped into another’s home, fell prey to the desires of the flesh and ended up guilty of the sins of adultery and murder.

  • The wisest man on earth and the author of Proverbs, who twice had visions from God, Solomon, acted not according to his God given wisdom, but in the desires of the flesh, married many Gentile women contrary to God's Word, and fell into the sin of idolatry (1 Kings 11:1-13) and caused serious trouble for his descendants and the people of Israel.

  • Uzziah became king of Judah as a boy, and God blessed and prospered him as long as he walked in God's ways; But as soon as he acted contrary to the Law of God, in his pride, and did not repent and recant even after being warned, he had to face severe chastisement (read 2 Chronicles 26 chapter).

  • Ananias and Sapphira coveted worldly things, and lost their things as well as their lives (Acts 5:1-11).

  • When Peter began to act as a man-pleaser, he fell into the sin of hypocrisy (Galatians 2:11-13).

  • Paul impatiently acted in anger and vengefully, insisted on doing his will instead of seeking God's will and acting accordingly, and was separated from his two close companions, Barnabas and Mark (Acts 15:36–39).

God the Holy Spirit showed from the lives of the apostles John and Paul, and had it written that the Christian has to contend with sin every day, all the time, that no Christian is free from sinning. The apostle John included himself amongst those who continue to sin by the use of "we". He wrote, "If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. If we say that we have not sinned, we make Him a liar, and His word is not in us" (1 John 1:8-10). Similarly, the apostle Paul wrote in Romans 7:12–25 about his continual struggle with sin and carnal tendencies, a struggle in which sin and the flesh often triumphed.

It is clear from these examples that man, even if he is a follower of the Lord, being a saved Believer, yet he is completely incapable of confronting Satan and his tricks, snares, and devices, without the safety and protection provided by the Lord. The moment he gives Satan the slightest opportunity, Satan traps and pushes him into sin. But yet God is patient with man, not immediately paying him according to his deeds. God calls the sins of the natural, unregenerate man, "acts committed in the times of ignorance" and is willing to overlook them, if man is willing to repent of them. And for Christians when they sin, He is ready to forgive and restore them if they confess their sins and repent according to 1 John 1:9.

So now these questions remain in front of us that why is man so incapable of confronting Satan? And why is God willing to overlook the sins of natural, unregenerate man, calling them "acts committed in the times of ignorance" if he repents of them? For this, it is necessary to consider some other Biblical things, and then put their conclusions together to understand this. We will begin see these ‘other  Biblical things’ in the subsequent articles. For now, the point of 1 Corinthians 10:12 “Therefore let him who thinks he stands take heed lest he fall”, is of paramount importance for us Christians demanding close attention and diligent observance. Whenever, wherever, in our lives, we break out even the slightest from limits set by God regarding our attitudes and behavior, Satan will immediately bite us, and make us fall into sin, according to Ecclesiastes 10:8. Then for the solution of the sin we have to confess that sin before the Lord God, and have to repent of it.
