Understanding "Baptism" - 14

Re-Baptism?

Many times, people face the question, should those who have been baptized once before, be baptized again; should re-baptism be given? The basis of their raising this question is their having an incomplete or incorrect understanding of baptism. If a person has the right understanding of baptism, as is given in God's Word Bible, and if he accepts the teachings of the Bible about it, then he will automatically get the answer to this question as well. So, let's again take a look at what we have seen and understood about baptism so far.

So far, we have seen and understood from the Word of God that:

  • To be baptized means to be immersed; And the baptism described in the Bible is only the immersion baptism.

  • Baptism was always given only to adults; After they repented of their sins and accepted the Lord Jesus as their Savior, and were voluntarily desirous of taking baptism.

  • There is no mention, support, or evidence of baptism of infants and children in the Bible, by sprinkling water, or making a mark on the forehead by dipping a finger in water, or in any other manner. Nor is there any instruction or teaching in the Bible for infants or children to be “Confirmed” when they are young. All these are things outside the Bible, they are customs made by men, which have no basis or approval from the Word of God; Nor is God obliged in any way to accept or honor them.

  • Voluntary baptism taken by saved adults is a public testimony of the change brought in their lives, because of their repentance of sins and their decision to accept the Lord Jesus as their personal Savior. Baptism is nothing more than this public testimony of an inner personal change.

  • Taking Baptism is a command of the Lord Jesus, for His disciples, so every Christian Believer has to take it, according to the available time and opportunity, and not ignore it, nor take it lightly. But baptism does not make a person acceptable to God; rather, those who become of the children of God should take baptism.

  • Baptism does not give salvation and forgiveness of sins; but those who have received forgiveness and salvation of sins through repentance and accepting the Lord Jesus are to be baptized. It can be taken immediately as soon as the person comes into faith, or may also be taken later according to the time and opportunity.

  • Baptism cannot be considered valid or invalid, based on the words or phrases spoken at the time of the baptism, or on the place where the baptism is administered. Baptism is only a publicly expressed personal testimony of the saved person; If the testimony is true, then how can its expression, their baptism be said to be valid or invalid, and in what context can one’s personal experience be called valid or invalid?

  • There is only one baptism - immersion baptism given in water. There is no teaching or instruction in the Bible to take more than this one baptism, or any baptism other than this one.

  • There is no mention, support, or teaching of the often publicized and emphasized “baptism of the Holy Spirit” in the Bible. Nor is there any Biblical basis or justification for this "baptism of the Holy Spirit" and related erroneous teachings.

  • Water, fire (i.e., hell's lake of fire), and the Holy Spirit are the mediums, and every person will eventually be immersed into one of them; at some time he will surely be thoroughly soaked with one of these. These three are not separate 'baptisms'.

Based on the above observations, it is evident and clear that the following types of baptism cannot be considered as "baptism" based on the teachings, instructions, and examples of the Bible:

  • If “baptism” has been taken in infancy, or in childhood; Even if it was later followed by Confirmation.

  • If “baptism” has been taken without repentance for sins and without receiving the Lord Jesus as Savior. Even if it has been taken in accordance with the customs of the local Christian Assembly or the local Church and/or its denomination.

  • If baptism has been taken under any coercion, or for the sake of fulfilling a ritual, or to please people, rather than taking it voluntarily.

  • Any “baptism” that does not conform to the above-mentioned teachings, instructions, and examples of the Bible.

From this it is evident and clear that any such "baptism" is not, in fact, Biblical and is not a "baptism" that is acceptable to God. That was only fulfilling a formality, or a ritual; Not an actual baptism. So now, after actually coming into the Christian Faith, whenever a person is baptized, it actually will be his "first" baptism, not a "second" baptism. That "first" testimony of his was baseless, false and unacceptable, so it was not accepted, and neither ever will be. Now that he is giving his true testimony, testimony according to the instructions and teachings of the Bible, only that will be considered and counted.

It is very true that in the Bible there is no mention of a re-baptism being given or taken; And based on this argument, people refuse allowing or taking a "second", or a re-baptism after being saved. But at the same time, it is equally right and justified to argue that there is no mention and example of the above mentioned improper and wrong "baptisms" in the Bible, but the people who oppose the "second" or a re-baptism, still insist and persist in doing their own thing and continue to administer them with impunity. Based on their contrived assumptions, they continue to give wrong "baptisms." But they prevent a Christian Believer, one who has come into the faith, from being properly baptized in obedience to the Lord, thereby causing that child of God to disobey the Lord, just as Satan beguiled Eve into disobeying God.

Another fact that should also be considered is that at the time the books of the Bible were being written, there were no improper "baptisms". The only baptism that was there at that time was the correct baptism as has been mentioned above. So, there was no need for anyone to receive a correct re-baptism, or to be taught and understand about a wrong “baptism.” Therefore, how and from where would any teaching or any example of a re-baptism come into the writings of the Bible? Even if something like this were written, people wouldn't even understand it, and it would become a ground for Satan to misuse it as a false teaching. For these reasons the absence of mention of a "second" or a re-baptism in the Bible cannot be used as a ground for forbidding it. If those not in favor of re-baptism stop administering the wrong "first" baptism, and shift only to the correct baptism, then the problem will automatically be solved.

Yes, having been saved, and having given the public testimony for it through baptism, there is no need, or justification, or reason for anyone to turn back and be baptized again.

If you are a Christian, it is essential for you to follow the Word of God, not the customs and traditions created by men. Because in the end, you will neither be judged by any man, nor on the basis of any man-made doctrines and teachings, all of which not only are vain (Matthew 15:9) but will also be taken away (Matthew 15:13). But everyone will be judged by the Lord Jesus (Acts 17:30-31), and only on the basis of His unalterable and firmly established Word (John 12:48). Therefore, it is necessary for you to be pleasing to God, instead of striving to please men; else you will have to suffer the loss of eternal life and eternity. Take a serious account of your life, and whatever things you need to rectify, do it right now, while you have the time and opportunity; procrastinating and postponing it for tomorrow or "later" may be very harmful.

If you have not yet accepted the discipleship of the Lord, make your decision in favor of the Lord Jesus now to ensure your eternal life and heavenly blessings. Where there is obedience to the Lord, where there is respect and obedience to His Word, there is also the blessing and protection of the Lord. Repenting of your sins, and asking the Lord Jesus for forgiveness of your sins, voluntarily and sincerely, surrendering yourself to Him - is the only way to salvation and heavenly life. You only have to say a short but sincere prayer to the Lord Jesus Christ willingly and with a penitent heart, and at the same time completely commit and submit your life to Him. You can also make this prayer and submission in words something like, “Lord Jesus, I am sorry for my sins and repent of them. I thank you for taking my sins upon yourself, paying for them through your life.  Because of them you died on the cross in my place, were buried, and you rose again from the grave on the third day for my salvation, and today you are the living Lord God and have freely provided to me the forgiveness, and redemption from my sins, through faith in you. Please forgive my sins, take me under your care, and make me your disciple. I submit my life into your hands." Your one prayer from a sincere and committed heart will make your present and future life, in this world and in the hereafter, heavenly and blessed for eternity.

Understanding "Baptism" - 13

*****************************************************

In view of some poorly understood, at times confusing, and Biblically unacceptable assumptions about baptism, we have seen that based on the teachings of the Bible, the Word of God, the only true baptism is the one which is given by immersing in water. Also, the baptism of the Holy Spirit is neither written anywhere in the Bible, nor is there any instruction in the Bible to receive it, separately. Another misconception related to this is the "baptism of fire," which we'll look at in today's article, based on the teachings of the Scriptures.

 Baptism with Fire and Water

In Matthew 3:11, John's statement of "he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire" is also misinterpreted and wrongly taught as the baptism of the Holy Spirit, i.e., the baptism of fire. To understand this, consider once again the meaning, usage, and significance of the word "with", as well as the conjunction "and" used here in this verse. In this verse John is not saying that "He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit, i.e., fire", as those giving wrong teachings say and teach about this verse. But the sentence is clear, but "He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire" - i.e., the Lord has baptisms, to be given by two mediums - one with the Holy Spirit, and the other with fire. Those who have accepted the Lord Jesus, believed in Him, are saved, they will automatically receive the Holy Spirit immediately upon believing, i.e., as we have seen earlier, will be baptized with the Holy Spirit, as It is written and explained in Acts 1:5, and Acts 11:15-16. Whereas those who do not accept the Lord, are not saved, they will be cast into the fire of hell for eternity - for them then the Lord has baptism with fire. Hell is called a "lake" in the Bible, in which Satan and his followers will be cast into, for eternity, and will be in torment, "The devil, who deceived them, was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone where the beast and the false prophet are. And they will be tormented day and night forever and ever" (Revelation 20:10). The Lord Jesus Christ left heaven and came to earth to give all of mankind a way and a deliverance out of this terrible, indescribable, unbearable pain, and He gave us that way as well. Now it is a personal decision of each person, whether or not to accept this provision made freely available by the Lord, only through the trust placed in him by any person.

As it is written in Acts 17:30-31, He, who is the Savior of the world today, at the time of the end of the world, the same Lord will also be the Judge of the world. Everyone who has received the Lord Jesus as his personal Savior will go to heaven with the Lord, according to the decision taken by each person during his earthly lifetime. But whoever rejects the Lord Jesus, will, according to his decision, go to hell with Satan, with whom he has decided to be. So, each person will be baptized by the Lord by one of these two mediums - either by the Holy Spirit; Otherwise by fire. That is why the Lord Jesus cautioned his disciples, “And do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. But rather fear Him who is able to destroy both soul and body in hell” (Matthew 10:28).

Also note, in Acts 2:3, about the receiving of the Holy Spirit by the Lord's disciples, it is written, “Then there appeared to them divided tongues, as of fire, and one sat upon each of them”; But this event—the coming of the tongues of fire and staying on the disciples of the Lord and then their receiving the power of the Holy Spirit—was never called "the baptism with the fire of the Holy Spirit", neither here nor anywhere else. Whereas if the baptism of the Holy Spirit and being baptized with fire were one and the same, this would be the most appropriate occasion and event to show and prove that the baptism of the Holy Spirit was the fire spoken by John the Baptist. But the Bible is clear that there is no baptism of the Holy Spirit; And fire, like water, is only a medium into which those who have not believed in the Lord Jesus Christ will be cast. That would be the baptism of fire for them.

Understanding "Baptism" - 12

**************************************************************

In the previous article, based on Ephesians 4:5 we saw that the Scriptures clearly state that there is only one baptism; not more. The confusion and contradiction about this arises only when the concept of "baptism of the Holy Spirit" is accepted as correct; i.e., a baptism other than water baptism is also accepted, as an extra one allegedly commanded by the Holy Spirit or by the authority of the Holy Spirit. And this concept doesn't match up with anything in the Bible. But still, to justify this misconception, people who give this wrong teaching, misuse another verse, and try to justify their argument by misinterpreting it, because there, instead of the singular "baptism", the plural word "baptisms" is written. Today we will analyze and interpret this verse, and see that there is no contradiction, no error or duplicity in the Word of God, when it is properly interpreted on the basis of the basic principles of Biblical interpretation. Whereas due to the teachings of the people who believe and propagate these wrong concepts, contradictions, apparent errors and mistakes are brought into the Word of God.

Baptism or Baptisms?

Baptism is a basic doctrine of the Christian faith. The necessity of a Christian Believer learning about these fundamental doctrines is stated in Hebrews 6:1-3. In this section, Hebrews 6:2 says "of the doctrine of baptisms, of laying on of hands, of resurrection of the dead, and of eternal judgment." Note, as also highlighted, the word used in the Biblical verse is "baptisms," which is plural, and clearly indicates more than one baptism; But this plural usage refers to the foundational learning of doctrine concerning baptisms. It is not in the context of being baptized. Based on this plural usage, these people propagating misconceptions and wrong teachings, try to justify the baptism of the Holy Spirit as a separate or different baptism, required in addition to water baptism. But if this verse is properly analyzed according to the basic tenets of Biblical interpretation, it becomes clear that this teaching is also wrong, inappropriate, and is not based upon using the right principles, in the right way.

Look at this verse, Hebrews 6:2 in its context, i.e., along with the verses preceding it. Also note that this Epistle to the Hebrews, like every other book in the Bible, in its original form, was a complete text, not divided into chapters and verses. The writings of each book of the Bible were later divided into chapters and verses to aid in their study, citation, and memorization. This division is artificial, hence sometimes causing confusion. Bearing this point in mind, in the context of Hebrews 6:2, look at the verses before it, especially Hebrews 5:12 “For though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you again the first principles of the oracles of God; and you have come to need milk and not solid food.” and Hebrews 6:1 "Therefore, leaving the discussion of the elementary principles of Christ, let us go on to perfection, not laying again the foundation of repentance from dead works and of faith toward God." Both of these verses help us understand the context of Hebrews 6:2, we learn that this section is referring to the "basic principles" or "the elementary principles of Christ," just as 6:2 also refers to baptismal doctrines. In other words, in this verse the teachings related to baptism, along with the teachings related to other matters written there, are the subject.  Notice that these verses from Hebrews, are stating the fundamental doctrinal topics that every Christian Believer ought to know; and baptism is one of those topics. But they are not referring to the taking or giving of baptism, but only to the doctrinal teachings related to it.

On the basis of doctrinal teachings of baptism, there are three types of baptism mentioned in the Scriptures - baptism of John the Baptist, of Moses, and of the Lord Jesus and his death:

  • Acts 18:25 "This man had been instructed in the way of the Lord; and being fervent in spirit, he spoke and taught accurately the things of the Lord, though he knew only the baptism of John."

  • 1 Corinthians 10:2 "all were baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea" - From a learning point of view, this example of baptism in the Old Testament is the Israelites going into the Red Sea and being covered by a cloud on top - their being covered with water on all sides and then passing through, that is, going in and coming out of the water.

  • Romans 6:3 “Or do you not know that as many of us as were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into His death?"

But the means of baptism is the same in all three - baptizing with water, immersing in water or being surrounded by water. So, there is more than one type of baptism in context of the doctrinal teachings about baptism; that's why the plural "baptisms" is used in Hebrews 6:2, referring to the elementary principles of Christ. But this causes no contradiction with anything else in the Scriptures, for all three are baptisms by the same means and in the same manner—by immersion in water or by being covered with water. And Ephesians 4:5 too speaks of this same baptism. Ephesians 4:5 speaks of practical taking or giving of baptism; while Hebrews 6:2 speaks of doctrinal teachings related to baptism. Both complement each other, there is no contradiction, no mistake. Whatever the mistake is, it is because of trying to reconcile a wrong point of view with Biblical truth, and that too by taking it out of context to interpret and understand it.

Therefore, there is only one baptism, it is given by water, by immersion in it. According to the teachings of the Bible, the concept of "baptism of the Holy Spirit" has no basis, this concept is patently wrong, and absolutely unacceptable. In the next article, we will consider another confusion regarding baptism, “baptism by fire.”
