Understanding the Gifts of the Holy Spirit of 1 Corinthians 12:7-11 - Part 1

In the previous article we have seen that neither any Spiritual Gift, nor any Christian Ministry is greater or smaller, or of greater or lesser importance; in the eyes of God all are equal. All the Spiritual Gifts are to be used not for anyone’s personal benefit, but for the benefit of the people of the Church. All the gifts are given by God the Holy Spirit, so that the Believer can do his God assigned work and ministry properly and worthily. It is the Holy Spirit who decides which gift to give to whom; these gifts are not according to the desires of any person and no man can demand any particular gift from Him. We had also seen that the phrase “But earnestly desire the best gifts” from 1 Corinthians 12:31 implies to be desirous of being of “best use” or as much use as possible in the Church of God. Contrary to popular interpretation and misuse, as is done by those who teach wrong doctrines and false teachings about the Holy Spirit, this phrase and this verse is not meant to say that any gift is greater or lesser than another, and Believers should strive to have their gifts changed or to obtain a particular gift.

From today we will see in a little more detail about the Spiritual gifts mentioned in the 5 verses, 1 Corinthians 12:7-11. Take note that in these verses, along with the gifts the phrase “to one/to another…” has been added. In other words, all the gifts have not been given to any one person, nor has one particular gift been given to all the persons; but according to their work and ministry, different people have been given different gifts. Therefore, no one should have any ill-feelings or jealousy about another’s gifts. Besides the gifts of the Holy Spirit mentioned over here, other gifts have also been mentioned in the other books of the Bible. But for now, we will concentrate upon only 1 Corinthians 12:7-11, where in these 5 verses, 9 different gifts have been mentioned. The gifts mentioned are: “word of wisdom,” “word of knowledge,” “faith,” “healing,” “miracles,” “prophecy,” “discerning of spirits,” “different kinds of tongues,” and “interpretation of tongue.” This section starts with the caution that all the gifts are given by the Holy Spirit for the benefit of all (verse 7) and concludes with the caution that these gifts are given as the Holy Spirit decides and are to be used as the Holy Spirit instructs (verse 11). In other words, everything related to the Spiritual gifts - their purpose, the ability to use them, who is to receive which gift, etc., are all completely controlled by the Holy Spirit; all these gifts are from Him and by Him. No man has any role or interference in this, as has been made clear in the immediately preceding section of verses 4-6.

Let us now understand the utility of these gifts:

  • “Word of wisdom”: Wisdom is the ability to properly use the knowledge and available resources in any given situation; to be able to do a job well, and in a beneficial manner. Consider this along with Psalm 119:97-105 and the meaning will become clearer.

  • “Word of knowledge”: Knowledge is accumulating what is known about a topic or thing. In general behavior, wisdom and knowledge complement each other, and are used along with each other; one cannot be used well without the other. But knowledge can be temporal or physical as well as godly; temporal or physical knowledge can be satanic, is harmful for the person as well as others, whereas godly knowledge is in accordance with the fruits of the Holy Spirit (James 3:14-17). The knowledge given by the Holy Spirit is godly, and its use with wisdom brings benefits for the person as well as others.

  • “Faith”: Many godly things seem impossible or unbelievable by the worldly wisdom, and are very difficult to understand. For example, to accept that the Lord Jesus has paid in full the price of the sins of the entire mankind, and now by coming into faith in Him man can be saved from the eternal punishment in hell, and spend eternity in heaven with God as his child, is very difficult if not impossible by man’s own knowledge and wisdom. But the Holy Spirit gives the requisite faith to accept this and other seemingly too wonderful and unbelievable things of God. That is why James has written that the one who lacks wisdom should ask God for it, and it will be given to him (James 1:5-6). In Hebrews 11 we have listed for us the names of the Heroes of Faith from the Old Testament who believed even on the seemingly impossible things of God and then through their faith in God and His Word did things which were impossible for others.

  • “Gifts of Healing”: The physical healings done by the disciples of the Lord Jesus are done by the power of the Holy Spirit, and this gift of healing is given by God to some, not to everyone. But the way this gift is being promoted and used today, has never been done in the Bible. In the Bible there is no mention of any “Healing Campaigns or Meetings” being organized and advertised; there is no mention in the Bible of people being enticed for physical healings, and this preaching of healings taking precedence over the preaching of the Gospel, the message of salvation, i.e., the ‘healing’ of the spirit. The pattern we see throughout God’s Word is that any physical healing given to any person, has always been given personally, and after talking with that person. But today, physical healing has become a method of preaching about and promoting persons, acquiring name and fame. Instead of using this gift in accordance with the Biblical teachings about it, it is being misused to gain name, fame, and temporal benefits in the name of the Lord Jesus, and to preach many wrong doctrines and false teachings along with it. And this has become a big problem for the actual Christian Faith and for preaching and propagating the Gospel of Salvation.

  • “Working of Miracles”: The kinds of miracles have not been specified here, the term generally means those works or things that are not possible through human ability, power, and skills. What these kinds of works are can be well understood from the works done by the Heroes of Faith mentioned in Hebrews 11, because of their faith in God and His Word. It was the Spirit of God who gave a practical working to their faith.

We will see about the remaining gifts, “prophecy,” “discerning of spirits,” “different kinds of tongues,” and “interpretation of tongue” in the next article. If you are a Christian Believer then it is very essential for you to know and understand your ministry, and the gifts the Holy Spirit has given to you to fulfill the work and ministry. You should understand the importance of the gifts, and how to use them appropriately and effectively, so that through you and your ministry the Gospel of salvation is preached and propagated worthily and God’s name is glorified. Whichever gifts the Holy Spirit has given to you, they are the best, most beneficial, and most rewarding for you. Do not get caught up in the false teaching and vain efforts of trying to change them or acquire some other gifts. Rather, use your gifts for your God assigned works and ministry and you will grow and be filled with the blessings of the Lord God.

If you are still thinking of yourself as being a Christian, a child of God, entitled to a place in heaven, because of being born in a particular family and having fulfilled the religious rites and rituals prescribed under your religion or denomination since your childhood, then you too need to come out of your misunderstanding of Biblical facts and start learning, understanding, and living according to what the Word of God says, instead of what any denominational creed says or teaches. Make the necessary corrections in your life now while you have the time and opportunity; lest by the time you realize your mistake, it is too late to do anything about it.

If you are still not Born Again, have not obtained salvation, or have not asked the Lord Jesus for forgiveness for your sins, then you have the opportunity to do so right now. A short prayer said voluntarily with a sincere heart, with heartfelt repentance for your sins, and a fully submissive attitude, “Lord Jesus, I confess that I have disobeyed You, and have knowingly or unknowingly, in mind, in thought, in attitude, and in deeds, committed sins. I believe that you have fully borne the punishment of my sins by your sacrifice on the cross, and have paid the full price of those sins for all eternity. Please forgive my sins, change my heart and mind towards you, and make me your disciple, take me with you." God longs for your company and wants to see you blessed, but to make this possible, is your personal decision. Will you not say this prayer now, while you have the time and opportunity to do so - the decision is yours.

Gifts of The Holy Spirit in Christian Ministry – 8

Click Here for the English Translation

Understanding “But earnestly desire the best gifts” (1 Corinthians 12:31)

In the previous article we had seen that God the Holy Spirit wants that all Christian Believers should learn and have a correct understanding about the gifts of the Holy Spirit. We had also seen that for help in carrying out the God assigned works and ministry, every Believer is given gifts appropriate to the need. In God’s eyes, no ministry is small or big, nor of greater or lesser importance; and no spiritual gift is of greater or lesser importance. Thinking in terms of such differentiation is man’s tendency, not God’s. Here, before anyone calls the gifts greater or lesser on the basis of 1 Corinthians 12:31 - a verse that is often misused to support this concept, it is essential to understand the verse properly and in its context.

Consider the preceding verses, in 1 Corinthians 12:12-27 Paul through using the human body as a metaphor has concluded that in the body all the parts are of equal importance, and their utility, presence, and functioning is essential in the location they have been placed. Similarly, in the Church - the body of Christ, every Christian Believer, with their different gifts and ministries, are equally important in their respective positions and for works assigned to them. No Christian Believer, and no one’s ministry or gift is greater or lesser in comparison to the others, and their works are also of equal importance, no work is more or less important. Then after this, in verse 28 Paul mentions the various responsibilities, ministries, and works in that one body, i.e., the Church of the Lord Jesus (we will consider them in greater details subsequently). After this, in verses 29-30, Paul through his rhetorical questions emphasizes that everybody has not been given the same responsibility, nor has anyone been given all the responsibilities; everyone has to fulfill their responsibility. Then in verse 31 he uses the phrase “the best gifts”. By looking at this verse along with and in context of the other verses, it becomes apparent the implication of “the best gifts” is gifts with the most responsibilities. In other words, through Paul, the Holy Spirit is telling the Christian Believers that desire to be the ones who take the most responsibilities in the Church - the body of the Lord, i.e., earnestly desire to be the ones in the Church who serve the most.

If this verse is taken to understand that it is indicating ministries or gifts being greater or lesser, then Paul’s discussion of verse 12-27 is vain; since then in the body of the Lord - His Church, everybody does not have the same importance, and God the Holy Spirit has differentiated between Believers by giving greater or smaller gifts. And this is not at all consistent with the teachings of Word of God, therefore is unacceptable. Rather, if this interpretation of gifts and ministries being of greater and lesser importance is accepted, then it again creates a similar situation to what we have seen earlier regarding the wrong teachings about “Baptism of the Holy Spirit” creates - of causing divisions of the ‘haves’ and ‘have nots’ in the Church - a result of unBiblical, wrong teachings and doctrines.

A second and very important things has been stated in verse 7 of this chapter, prior to mentioning the spiritual gifts, over which most people do not usually pay any attention. This is, “But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to each one for the profit of all” (1 Corinthians 12:7). Earlier, while looking at and understanding how God works, we have seen that our Father God works for the benefit of everyone, and the blessings He gives are not for any person’s personal use and benefit, but for the benefit and growth of everyone through that person. This same thing is stated here in verse 7. The Holy Spirit is getting it written beforehand that whatever spiritual gifts are given by the Holy Spirit, they are all for the benefit and growth of everyone in the Church. This is then repeated and re-affirmed in 1 Corinthians 14:12 “Even so you, since you are zealous for spiritual gifts, let it be for the edification of the church that you seek to excel.” Although this statement has been made in context of speaking in ‘tongues’ i.e., other languages, yet it is emphatically repeated here that the Church should benefit and grow through the use of spiritual gifts. Also, 1 Corinthians 12:2-5 make it clear that speaking in ‘tongues’, i.e., other earthly languages should be for the benefit of the Church; it is not meant for anyone’s personal use or benefit. Although it is not a part of our current discussion, but in context of what is being said here, it is very important to say and understand that what the Bible mentions as ‘tongues’, are known, spoken, and understood languages of this world; languages that have their own names and are spoken by people living in various geographical areas of this world, and which can be translated from one to another. Those who preach, teach and spread wrong doctrines and false teachings in the name of, and about the Holy Spirit say and teach that these are extra-terrestrial languages, but there is no support for this from the Bible. Read carefully and prayerfully 1 Corinthians 14 chapter, and the truth about this will readily become apparent.

The third important thing about spiritual gifts we see in 1 Corinthians12:11 - that every spiritual gift is given by the Holy Spirit, and it is He who determines the gift to be given; which is in accordance with the person’s ministry. Which spiritual gift is to be given to whom is not according to the desire, demand, or asking of the person. Whatever God has decided and provided to a person, he has to use it appropriately and diligently. We have seen above that the meaning of the phrase “But earnestly desire the best gifts” (1 Corinthians 12:31) is to be desirous of doing the best possible in the Church, and not adding to, or replacing one’s gift with another. We have also seen in earlier articles that the work and ministry God has assigned to a person, it is only for that person to carry out, not anyone else. God does not change His decisions and working on anyone’s say so. He has taken His decisions with eternity in perspective, they are not short-term decisions or taken as by the limited human understanding and desires. The blessings of a Christian Believer are in his obeying God; not in trying to change God according to one’s likes and desires.

If you are a Christian Believer, then it is very necessary that to stay safe from the wrong teachings about the Holy Spirit, you keep the above-mentioned facts in mind. No ministry and no spiritual gift is greater or smaller, more important or less important in God’s eyes. Every ministry and gift has been given by God, for the benefit and growth of others and of the Church through the recipient of the gift and ministry; they are not for anyone’s personal use and benefit. In this context, as becomes clear from the study of 1 Corinthians 14, the gift of speaking in ‘tongues’, i.e., in other known and named earthly languages, is also for the benefit and growth of the Church. No one should believe and get carried away by the false notion and teaching that the making of strange unintelligible noises and carrying out odd bodily actions is proof of the power and actions of the Holy Spirit specially bestowed upon that person - there is no Biblical proof or support of this false claim. Every spiritual gift, who is to receive which one, is decided by God; and He does not do it according to any person’s likes and desires. No one should try to alter the truths of God’s Word regarding 1 Corinthians 12:31 on the basis of their wrong out-of-context interpretations of this verse and contrived false teachings.

If you are a Christian Believer, then without getting waylaid and distracted by what people say and their own concepts, carry on faithfully in your work and ministry assigned to you by God. In God’s eyes you, your work, and ministry are of equal importance to anyone else. Also, never forget that there are many others who are doing many things in the Lord’s name, but on their own. Such people may have a high stature and good commendation in the eyes of the world, and the people of the world as well as they themselves may think of themselves to be very important and great. But eventually, at the time of judgment, they will get to hear from the Lord, “'I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness!'” (Matthew 7:23); then what will their condition be like? Therefore, do not fall for and go by the opinions and evaluations of men. Whatever God has given to you, whatever He has asked you to do, do it diligently, properly, and faithfully; and the Lord will never ever let you be lesser than anyone else in any manner.

Understanding the Gifts of the Holy Spirit

In our study on the role of God the Holy Spirit and the gifts He gives, in Christian Living and Ministry, we have seen that God has determined some work or the other for every Christian Believer, and He expects him to be properly and diligently engaged in it. For the help of the Christian Believer to be doing his assigned work properly, he not only has made available to him the help of God the Holy Spirit residing in him, but also the gifts and abilities that the Holy Spirit has given to every Believer, appropriate for his ministry, so that each Believer can do his work and ministry well, in a manner acceptable and pleasing to God. In this context we have also seen that only that which is done in the will of God and in obedience to Him and His Word is acceptable to God. No man should expect that anything he does on his own, but adding to it the name of God, will make it acceptable to God and God will bless him for it; this is his own thinking and belief, and is not in accordance with God’s thinking, working and teachings in His Word. Therefore, God rejects all such men and their works. Hence, it is mandatory that when a Believer does his assigned work and ministry, and utilizes his gifts given by the Holy Spirit, he always keeps this principle in mind, so that Satan may not entice him away into something seemingly desirable, but actually disastrous.

Therefore, it is expected and beneficial that every Christian Believer has a proper understanding and knowledge about the gifts the Holy Spirit gives. God has also not left His people unaware and helpless about them. The Holy Spirit has had proper descriptions written about them in the various books of the Bible. Besides what is written in the other places, in the letters written by Paul to the Churches in Rome and Corinth, we have the main teachings on this subject. In his first letter to the Church at Corinth, Paul wrote, “Now concerning spiritual gifts, brethren, I do not want you to be ignorant” (1 Corinthians 12:1); then from here onwards till the end of chapter 14, the topic of consideration is the gifts of the Holy Spirit. Similarly, in the letter to the Romans, chapter 12 is about the gifts of the Holy Spirit. Every Believer engaged in Christian ministry should prayerfully, carefully, and repeatedly read and study these chapters; ask for the guidance of the Holy Spirit, learn and apply the teachings given here about these gifts in his life and ministry. We will start by looking at the things written in 1 Corinthians 12 regarding the gifts of the Holy Spirit.

As is quite apparent from the first verse of this chapter, quoted above, God the Holy Spirit very much wants the Christian Believers to have the knowledge and understanding about these gifts. After this, in verses 4 to 6, Paul under the Holy Spirit writes that there are many different gifts, ministries, and activities, but behind all of them, it is one and the same God the Holy Spirit who provides the power and ability. The implication is that in the eyes of God, neither any person, nor his work or ministry, nor the evident effects of his works and ministry are big or small, or, of greater or lesser importance. Whatever God has determined for a person, that and only that is appropriate, best, and important for him; no matter how other men may look at it or consider it, but God will consider it, evaluate it, and reward it according to His own criteria and standards, not any man’s.

To understand this, let us look at two examples from the Gospels:

In Matthew 25:14-30 is a parable the Lord Jesus spoke about a person going on a journey and giving his servants some talents, some responsibilities. He gave one servant five talents, to another two, and to the third one, one talent; and on returning, he asked for an account from all three of them. In this parable, there is no indication anywhere that in the eyes of that man there was any differentiation amongst his servants and the criteria he was evaluating them by. Although, the lord of those servants gave to each one according to that servant’s personal abilities (verse 15), yet, in the eyes of that man, those three were of similar importance, and their evaluation was also on the same criteria, by the same standards, not differently. The servant who had received one talent was punished because of his own irresponsible behavior, not based on any preconceived ideas the man had about him.

In Matthew 20:1-16, the Lord Jesus gave a parable of the owner of the vineyard, who went at different times throughout the day to look for and engage laborers to work in his vineyard, he even brought them in the last hour of the day. Then he paid them all for their work. There was no difference in the wages given to those who had worked the whole day, and those who had worked only in the last hour. The laborers who wanted to create a differentiation were admonished and silenced by the owner of the vineyard. The conclusion is quite clear, no work assigned by the Lord is greater or lesser, or of greater or lesser importance in the eyes of the Lord. Therefore, no gift related to that God given work or ministry, will be greater or lesser, or of more or lesser importance. Those who do their God assigned work faithfully, and utilize their God given provisions and gifts properly, are never seen as greater or lesser than anyone else. God gives them all similar honor, commendation, and rewards for their work; whatever be any person’s importance and evaluation of that work or ministry.
