Excommunication From the Church – 2

As God’s stewards of the Church and of maintaining fellowship with His children, where He has placed the Christian Believers, the Believers are to take decisions and act in a manner that will contribute to the growth of the Church and to the spiritual growth of the other Believers. We have seen that maintaining discipline in the Church and fellowship is important, and as God’s stewards, the Believers may have to take some difficult or harsh decisions to maintain this discipline. Since the last article we have started to learn what the Bible says about excluding or excommunicating an errant Believer from the Church and the fellowship. In the last article we have seen from the Lord Jesus’s instructions in the Sermon on the Mount, from Matthew 5:23-24, that in case of personal differences and problems with another Believer, the primary response of the one who has been wronged by another should be to emulate Lord Jesus Christ. Therefore, the first attempt should be to forgive and be reconciled with the offending brother; the one who has been hurt has been asked by the Lord to take the first step to do so, instead of waiting for the one did the wrong to come and ask for forgiveness and reconciliation. Today we will take up another passage from God’s Word to learn about the stages or steps to resolve seemingly irreconcilable personal differences between Believers.

The Lord Jesus in Matthew 18:15-17, has given another set of instructions for handling personal differences and discord amongst Believers and in the Church. In this passage, in each of the three verses, we see the successive steps to be taken to resolve the situation. In the last article, we had seen from Matthew 5:23-24 that the first response to resolve the situation is to come from the offended person, the one who has suffered being wronged. This wronged Believer has to act with the intention to be reconciled with the one who has caused the problems, and we had seen that for doing this there is no mention by the Lord of trying to discuss and settle the issue of who was at fault and why this situation has come about. This is the first step in resolving personal differences and problems between Believers affecting the Church and fellowship.

From Matthew 18:15 we see that the Lord has instructed: “Moreover if your brother sins against you, go and tell him his fault between you and him alone. If he hears you, you have gained your brother.” So, the manner of handling the situation has changed somewhat now, from what was instructed in Matthew 5:23-24. The offended person is till responsible for taking the first step; it is he who has to go to the one who created the problem, to settle the issue. Again, as in Matthew 5:23-24, this is to be done on a personal basis, the two involved persons getting together to sort out the issue, mutually. But now, the Lord is giving the offended person the instruction to go the offending person and “tell him his fault between you and him alone.” So now, once his initial attempt at reconciliation on the basis of ignoring the offense and going only by the principle of forgiveness and reconciliation has failed, the offended Believer now has the Lord’s authority to make another attempt, but this time by bringing up the cause of the problems, and discussing it mutually. But one needs to be very careful and patient here. Often, in such situations Satan sees to it that somehow this discussion soon degenerates into accusations, reviling, and trying to demean the other person; and the situation worsens instead of resolving. This aggravation from any side has not been permitted by the Lord. It still has to be done in love, with an intention to forgive and be reconciled, but with the additional advantage of using the opportunity to have the situation clarified to each other by both sides. So, this can be considered as the second step in disciplining an errant Believer, in handling a troublesome situation of personal differences adversely affecting the Church and fellowship – discuss and sort it out mutually. Keep it at a personal level, and this is not the time to involve others or influence them about the problem.

Then, in Matthew 18:16, we find written that “But if he will not hear, take with you one or two more, that 'by the mouth of two or three witnesses every word may be established',” if the problem remains unresolved, the Lord gives the next step – the offended Believer should take with him one or two more people, since they are to serve as “witnesses” for others, and as the next verse indicates, even try to serve as mediators to help resolve the situation, it is implied that these should be members of the Church and fellowship. In the presence of these “witnesses” and mediators, the offended Believer should once again try to discuss and resolve the situation. Once again, the initiation has to be done by the one who is offended; he has to arrange for the “witnesses”, and get them to serve as mediators. He has to arrange for the meeting, he has to try and make the offender understand and try to have him agree to have the situation sorted out. The only difference being that now he has “witnesses” to vouch for him that he has taken the initiative and has tried his utmost to have the problem sorted out and harmony restored, as well as others who can say that even they have tried to have the problem settled but to no avail. This can be considered as the third step in this process of resolving the troublesome situation of personal differences affecting the unity of the fellowship and of the Church.

The fourth step, from first part of Matthew 18:17 is, “And if he refuses to hear them, tell it to the church.” In the first part of this sentence, we have from the Lord “And if he refuses to hear them,” which clearly indicates that the aforementioned “witnesses” of verse 16 are meant to also participate in the discussions and try from their side to have the errant Believer come around to agreeing and have the situation resolved. Now comes the fourth step, “tell it to the church.” This is the stage, now is the time when the matter become public. The offended Believer, and his witnesses are to report the matter to the “Church.” Note that at the time the Lord made this statement, there was no “Church” as such. The Lord and His disciples were not gathering separately to worship, they still went to the Jewish synagogues and the Temple to worship on the sabbath day. But the Lord still uses this term, “Church” – i.e., at that moment, His group of people, the ones He had called out to His disciples, and from the future long-term point of view, the Church that would be established. There is another important thing to be noted here; the Lord is not saying to report the matter to a “select group of the disciples,” or, in the current context, to some Church committee, or only to the Pastor and Elders of the Church. The matter has to be brought before the whole Church, to the entire group of Believers, the entire fellowship of that local Church; and now the whole Church, the whole assembly of Believers has to try and have the matter resolved.

It is now, if the errant Believer still remains stubborn and does not agree to have the matter resolved, that the final step of exclusion or excommunication comes in, in the second half of this verse 17. This needs to be considered and analyzed in some detail. In the next article we will take it up from here, and see further about an errant Believer being excluded or excommunicated from the Church on grounds of stubbornly maintaining differences and discord with some other Believer.

If you have not yet accepted the discipleship of the Lord, make your decision in favor of the Lord Jesus now to ensure your eternal life and heavenly blessings. Where there is obedience to the Lord, where there is respect and obedience to His Word, there is also the blessing and protection of the Lord. Repenting of your sins, and asking the Lord Jesus for forgiveness of your sins, voluntarily and sincerely, surrendering yourself to Him - is the only way to salvation and heavenly life. You only have to say a short but sincere prayer to the Lord Jesus Christ willingly and with a penitent heart, and at the same time completely commit and submit your life to Him. You can also make this prayer and submission in words something like, “Lord Jesus, I am sorry for my sins and repent of them. I thank you for taking my sins upon yourself, paying for them through your life.  Because of them you died on the cross in my place, were buried, and you rose again from the grave on the third day for my salvation, and today you are the living Lord God and have freely provided to me the forgiveness, and redemption from my sins, through faith in you. Please forgive my sins, take me under your care, and make me your disciple. I submit my life into your hands." Your one prayer from a sincere and committed heart will make your present and future life, in this world and in the hereafter, heavenly and blessed for eternity.

English Translation

Excommunication From the Church – 1

God has made every Born-Again Christian Believer a member of His Church and has placed him in fellowship with His other children since the moment of his salvation. Therefore, every Born-Again Christian Believer is God’s steward in these positions and has the responsibility of functioning in a manner that causes the Church to grow and the other Believers to progress in their spiritual lives. In the previous articles we have seen about the role of the Elders and the fact that every Believer needs discipline; God, through instructions and examples in His Word has shown how this discipline needs to exercised. Sometimes, some stubborn and unrelenting Believer, or someone who has committed some very serious offence, may require a harsher discipline; or, a Church Elder or Pastor may develop irreconcilable differences with some member. Usually, in such situations that Believer is either excluded from the fellowship, or is excommunicated and cast out of the church and fellowship of the Believers, and it may be communicated to other members and other Churches or Assemblies, not to keep any fellowship with such Believer. While this may be the Elder’s, or the Pastor’s personal decision, but what does the Bible have to say for such a situation? Does God’s Word permit such an action to be taken? Are there any God given guidelines and instructions for such punishment to be prescribed?

We see in God’s Word that, to maintain Church discipline, the Lord has given the mechanisms, of how this should be done. The first step is dealing with the situation at a personal level in a spirit of forgiveness with the intention to be reconciled. If there are any mutual differences, or misunderstandings, then the first attempt should be for reconciliation and mutual brotherhood, as is the nature of God, and as the Lord has instructed to His disciples in His Sermon on the Mount, in Matthew 5:23-24. We see from this passage that the Lord is instructing that not the offender, but the offended, i.e., it is the suffering person who has to take the first step, the lead in trying to reach an agreement and for reconciliation with the offender. This shows that the one who has suffered and has been wronged, now he is willing to forgive and be reconciled with the one who has created the problems. Notice that in verse 24 here, the Lord is not saying for the one who has suffered the wrong to go and make the one who has created the problems realize what he has done and how he has caused the suffering; rather, the Lord’s instructions are simple and straightforward – “First be reconciled to your brother, and then come and offer your gift.” This clearly shows that the one who has created problems is to be taken as and treated as a “brother” – a brother in faith, or a brother in the Lord, i.e., a member of one’s family, the family of God, and is to be reconciled with. Reconciliation and forgiveness has to start from here, with the realization and acceptance of this unalterable and irrevocable relationship, that whatever he may have done, he is still my brother, he is still a part of my God given family. In the parable of the Prodigal Son given in Luke 15, the Father uses this perspective to try to make the elder brother come around to being reconciled. With this perspective as the starting point, the Believer has to go to the problem-creator with the intention of getting reconciled; and this can only happen if the Believer is willing to forgive and re-start the relationship.

This is exactly like what the Lord God has done with us, the sinful mankind. We sinned, we disobeyed God, we hurt God, we left Him and went into the world to live a life contrary to what He wants. But it was God, the one who was offended, who made the first move to reconcile us back with Him. It was He who left the glory and majesty he had in heaven, and came down; the offended came down to the offender in humility, to forgive and reconcile us with Himself. Now, that is what He expects us to do as well (Colossians 3:12-13). In teaching His disciples what is commonly known as “The Lord’s Prayer” the Lord had taught them to expect forgiveness from God as they forgive others (Matthew 6:12), and then immediately after the prayer, He reiterated the instruction and told the disciples of the consequences of their being unforgiving (Matthew 6:14-15). The Lord emphasized on being magnanimous in forgiving in His instructions to Peter (Matthew 18:21-22); as well as taught it in His parable of the unforgiving servant (Matthew 18:23-35).

So not exclusion or expulsion, but forgiveness and reconciliation in the spirit of being family and brotherhood should be the first course of action towards the offending Believers. In the next article we will look at the next step, the Lord outlined in Matthew 18:15-17.

Believer’s Need Discipline – 2

In the previous article we have started on the topic of implementing discipline in the Church, and have begun to see that all Christian Believers, irrespective of their physical or spiritual age, their being established in God’s Word, their status and position in the Church, everyone is a fallible person, does make some mistake or the other, and therefore does need correction and being disciplined. No one is over and above this basic fact of Christian living. Even the prophet Isaiah, although already serving as God’s prophet, when he was brought into the presence of God and His Holiness, immediately realized how vile and deplorable, how unworthy of being in the presence of the Lord he actually was (Isaiah 6:1-7); the Apostle Paul laments his struggle with sin, not in the past tense, but in the present tense (Romans 7:15-24); the Apostle John, through the use of “we,” includes himself amongst those who continue to sin and need to come before God in repentance whenever they sin (1 John 1:8-10). Therefore, every Born-Again Christian Believer, being God’s steward of the Church where God has placed him in fellowship with His other children, with the help and guidance of God’s Holy Spirit residing in him, must, instead of any man or man’s teachings, make only the Lord Jesus and His Word his role-model to follow and obey. By doing this, he will be able to fulfill his responsibilities as God’s steward, to help in the growth of the Church and the Believers in their spiritual lives. In the previous article we have seen some things about the necessity of discipline in a Believer’s life, and Biblical examples of how it is to be carried out. Carrying on from there, let us consider some further Biblical facts and teachings on this topic.

God knows that every Believer is prone to committing errors and has a tendency of doing wrongs. God is patient with the Believers, and helps them come out of it, helps them to grow and mature (Psalms 37:23-24; Proverbs 24:16). Therefore, it does not mean that the one who has committed some mistakes, is, or has become an unbeliever, or has been rejected by God, or cannot be God's spokesperson, or can no longer be used by God, etc.; all such contentions are false, are unBiblical. Take for example, David, for his sin with Bathsheba and Uriah; yet in the New Testament he has been quoted very often by name, 54 times, and is again called a man after God's own heart (Acts 13:22). David still wrote his Psalms after this sordid episode, which have been included in God’s Holy Word for eternity.

Similarly, also think of the Corinthian Church, despite its sorry state of spirituality and Christian witness, it was still addressed as the Church of God by the Holy Spirit through Paul (1 Corinthians 1:1-2). Although the Believers of that Church were called carnal and immature (1 Corinthians 3:1-4), but in 1 Corinthians 1:2 they were also called “saints.” And note that nowhere in the two letters written to them, were they ever called ‘unbelievers’ or those who had been rejected by God, or, will be rejected by God. Their poor spiritual status and Christian living did not mean that God had taken back or denied them His Word and the spiritual gifts of the Holy Spirit, or was not using them; rather, Paul says that God had enriched them and gave them spiritual gifts, confirmed the testimony of the Lord Jesus through them (1 Corinthians 1:5-8). Paul criticizes them, points out their multiple and even gross shortcomings, even problems related to the Lord's Table that invited severe retribution from God (1 Corinthians 11:30); though Paul corrects them, even rebukes them severely, so-much-so that the Corinthian Believers did not like it (2 Corinthians 7:8), but he never calls them ‘unbelievers’ or ‘ungodly’.

This pointing out of one’s errors by a spiritually mature or senior Believer neither means, nor should it be seen as, or taken as insulting or belittling that errant Believer; or, that the one correcting him is opposed to him, wants to ridicule him. Nor is it denying the errant Believer’s service, standing, work, and contribution in the Church of God. Instead, this corrective action should be taken as an act of love and of concern for the well-being and spiritual growth of the Believer, it should be taken in the spirit of Psalm 141:5 and Galatians 4:16. Rather, by not pointing out the errors, and thereby allowing the errant Believer to continue in his wrongs, is actually being an irresponsible steward towards him. It is tantamount to preventing him from growing and maturing spiritually by letting him persist in his faults, and letting him harm his own eternal blessings.

In the same manner, while we are to learn from our Elders and honor them, yet we should be careful not to keep copying them and emulating the errors that the Elders might be making, even inadvertently. In any case, every person, whether a member of the Church or an Elder, or a preacher and teacher of God’s Word, everyone will be standing before the Lord to give an account of himself (2 Corinthians 5:10), not of anyone else; and then, nor will any person be able to make any recommendations for anyone else, nor will he be able influence the Lord in any manner about the rewards someone else should receive. So why go after pleasing or blindly following any person instead of following our Lord and His Word? How does following any man benefits us, if at all? On the contrary, following any man or their words only makes us more prone to falling into some man-made error or the other. Our allegiance must be with the Lord God and His Word, and not with any man, since man can always be misled by Satan as well as mislead others. As has been pointed out on numerous occasions in these articles, it is every Believer’s responsibility to always first cross-check from God’s Word everything that is being preached and taught, no matter who is preaching or teaching it; and only accept and follow whatever is preached and taught after confirming it through this verification (Acts 17:11; 1 Corinthians 14:29; 1 Thessalonians 5:21). So, having differences of opinions and criticizing or correcting an Elder and his preaching or teachings, does not mean being opposed to him or being disrespectful towards him. Rather, it shows being obedient to God and His Word, and cautious about being misled by anyone and get harmed. It should also be taken in the spirit of Psalm 141:5 and Galatians 4:16.

In the next article, we will continue with learning about implementing discipline in the Church and amongst Believers.

Believer’s Need Discipline – 1

As God’s stewards of His Church and of fellowshipping with other Believers, all Believers have to conduct themselves and help others in a manner that contributes to the growth of the Church as well as helps others to grow spiritually. In the previous articles we have seen various aspects of fulfilling this responsibility, and the role of a proper ministry of God’s Word. The Believers should never forget that the Church of God is comprised of human beings, and no person is ever perfect. We all, even the spiritually mature, the Elders, the Preachers and Teachers of God’s Word, everyone, whoever he may be, do make mistakes some time or the other, and we all need corrections for our mistakes, from time to time. God knows this, is patient and longsuffering about it, and has made provisions in His Church and amongst His Believers for His children to be made aware of their mistakes, and of being told how to correct them. But those who do not take this correction in the right way, will then eventually have to bear the consequences of their being stubborn or egoistic about it.

Therefore, no one in God’s church should live and function with the misunderstanding that they are perfect and do not make any mistakes; or that no one has the right to point out anything wrong in them and thereby hurt their feelings or lower their status in the Church. Nor should they think that if there is anything wrong in them, then God will tell them about it directly. Another form of this misunderstanding is that some Believer’s think that since a particular Elder or Believer has not said anything about something in their lives, therefore, no one else has the ability, right, or authority to point it out either – how God uses one Elder or Believer, or another, is God’s discretion. God can point out one thing to one person, and another thing to another, and use them for different things in the same Believers life. We can neither direct God about this, nor assume things about His functioning.

We see from God’s Word that it is God’s method of working that He uses His ministers to speak to and point out the errors and their consequences to the people of the world, not only to the Gentiles, e.g. Jonah and Nahum spoke to the people of Nineveh, and Obadiah spoke to Edomites; but He also does the same with His own people. The prophets of the Old Testament did just that to the Israelites – spoke to them, even to Kings and dignitaries, usually publicly and boldly, and warned them of the coming wrath of God for their disobedience and straying away from God; the writings of the Old Testament prophets are all on this theme. We also see that God even used His prophets to indirectly speak to not only His people in general, but even to His chosen and appointed ones, instead of speaking directly with these few special ones; e.g., Samuel rebuked King Saul for his disobedience (1 Samuel 13:13-14; 15:17-23). Even though God was using David to write Psalms that would later be included in His Word, and thus, could have spoken to him directly and privately, but God spoke to him about his wrong through Nathan; who not only spoke to King David but also rebuked him for his sin against Uriah and Bathsheba (2 Samuel 12:1-14). Isaiah rebuked King Hezekiah after he had exposed the kingdom to the Babylonians (Isaiah 39); Azariah and eighty other Priest withstood King Uzziah, when he transgressed God’s instructions, and even thrust him out of the Temple (2 Chronicles 26:16-20). All the letters of the New Testament, have been written by the men of God, to other Churches and men of God, to point out their short-comings and errors, and to correct them. In these letters to the Churches, which not only were read to the whole Church, but were also circulated to the other surrounding churches (Colossians 4:16; 1 Thessalonians 5:27), names of some people doing wrong have been also been written and thus they became public knowledge.

Every Christian Believer, no matter what his age, spiritual maturity, and commitment to the Lord, whatever may be his quality and quantity of service for the Lord, however well versed he may be in God's Word, whatever may be his position and status in the Church; yet he is still a fallible human being, prone to make mistakes and commit errors, whether knowingly or unknowingly, habitually or occasionally. Therefore, God does use other people to point out our mistakes and the way to correct them, so that no one may consider themselves any more than they should. Rather, it is God’s instruction in His Word, the Bible that the other spiritually mature people of God should correct the errant Believers – Galatians 6:1-2; James 5:19-20; and there is no Biblical instruction that this necessarily must be done privately, the common examples are of pointing out the errors and correcting publicly. The working principle seems to be of that if the persons disregard and disobey God, and sin against Him publicly, they should not expect a private response from God an application of Mark 4:22-24). The reason might be that people being aware of a likely public exposure and rebuke for their wrongs, will remain careful to not commit mistakes, or continue in them, and thereby remain safe from satanic ploys.

That is why, knowing and understanding that no man is ever perfect, infallible, and always correct, our role model always must only be the Lord Jesus, and not any man, ever. To live and function in the fear of man is to invite trouble (Proverbs 29:25) even if it is a fear of consideration for that person; i.e., to be more concerned about offending some man, rather than being concerned about offending God, can bring problems in our lives.
