The Elementary Principles – 36

Baptisms - 16

Is It Necessary for Salvation? (1)

As we have seen in the earlier articles, “Baptisms” is one of the elementary principles given in Hebrews 6:1-2, that every Born-Again Christian Believer needs to learn and know. After looking at some of the basics about baptism in the previous articles, today we'll begin to look at and understand some of the controversial things related to baptism. The first of these is a very common belief that baptism is also necessary for a person to be saved; that salvation is with baptism. To understand these things, it is necessary to keep in mind the main basic principles for the correct interpretation of the Bible that we had seen initially. In brief, these principles are:

  • to consider everything in its context;

  • to consider it with other verses at other places in the Bible that are related to that topic;

  • to consider it along with other related teachings of the Bible,

  • to consider it with the meaning that its original or first audience understood and followed when it was first said.

Adhering to these principles of Bible interpretation is mandatory to avoid wrong interpretations and conclusions. At the same time, we should also note that the Bible too uses figurative language, similar to normal conversation and use of language. And that words used in Bible text, as in general usage, can have more than one literal meaning; therefore, it is always the context and the following of the above-mentioned principles that decides the appropriate and correct meaning applicable. Therefore, it is necessary to understand everything not only in a single literal meaning, but, also according to the context, its implied meaning or connotation, and the meaning that those who first heard it understood and accepted. If these basic principles are not diligently followed, it becomes very easy to misinterpret and misunderstand many things. It is because of these mistakes that the misinterpretations and wrong teachings come about and are taught.

It is a well-established and often stated teaching of the Bible that salvation is not by any kind of works (Ephesians 2:5, 8-9); not even by baptism, because that too is a form of work. Any interpretation of any part of the Bible that contradicts or goes contrary to the absolute unchanging doctrine of the forgiveness of sins and salvation only and only by the grace of God because of coming into faith in the Lord Jesus, is wrong and absolutely unacceptable; no matter how logical or pleasing it may seem to be.

With these things in mind, ponder over some Biblical facts:

  • What baptism did the robber who repented on the cross take? But he went to heaven. Even before the Great Commission was given, the contrived necessity of baptism for being saved and going to heaven had been negated.

  • Many are saved in their last moments of life, when they cannot take baptism for one reason or another; similarly, many for some other valid reason are unable to take baptism after believing, e.g., living in arid deserts or snow-bound localities, having come to faith through radio-broadcasts but living in an isolated place and being alone, being the only Believers with no one to baptize them, etc. Will they perish because although they have truly repented and believed, have wholeheartedly accepted the Lord Jesus as Savior, but for some compelling reason, couldn't fulfil the baptismal rituals?

  • We have seen in the Great Commission, given by the Lord, that baptism is to be administered only to those who are saved; and not that baptism will give salvation to anyone. The sequence given by the Lord in Matthew 28:19-20 is - Make disciples first; then baptize and teach the words of the Lord to whoever becomes a disciple - this is the order given by the Lord in this Great Commission.

  • It is also clear from this that baptism is not for children or infants, but only for those who have accepted the Lord Jesus as Savior and have become His disciples.

If any interpretation of any verse of the Bible contradicts these basic principles of salvation and Christian discipleship, then that interpretation or teaching is wrong. It is essential to reinterpret it, correct it. There are no contradictions in the Bible; and no one can bring in inconsistencies and contradictions either. We will continue on this topic in the articles ahead.

If you have not yet accepted the discipleship of the Lord, make your decision in favor of the Lord Jesus now to ensure your eternal life and heavenly blessings. Where there is obedience to the Lord, where there is respect and obedience to His Word, there is also the blessing and protection of the Lord. Repenting of your sins, and asking the Lord Jesus for forgiveness of your sins, voluntarily and sincerely, surrendering yourself to Him - is the only way to salvation and heavenly life. You only have to say a short but sincere prayer to the Lord Jesus Christ willingly and with a penitent heart, and at the same time completely commit and submit your life to Him. You can also make this prayer and submission in words something like, “Lord Jesus, I am sorry for my sins and repent of them. I thank you for taking my sins upon yourself, paying for them through your life.  Because of them you died on the cross in my place, were buried, and you rose again from the grave on the third day for my salvation, and today you are the living Lord God and have freely provided to me the forgiveness, and redemption from my sins, through faith in you. Please forgive my sins, take me under your care, and make me your disciple. I submit my life into your hands." Your one prayer from a sincere and committed heart will make your present and future life, in this world and in the hereafter, heavenly and blessed for eternity.

The Elementary Principles – 35

Baptisms - 14

 Baptism – In Whose Name?

In our study on baptism, so far, we have seen that Biblically speaking, in the first or initial Church baptism was always given only to adults, who had heard and accepted the gospel, and were either asking, or were consenting to be baptized. We had also seen that in accordance with the literal meaning of the word “baptizo,” it was always immersion baptism, there was no other method of baptism; the people of the initial Church did not know of any other way of baptism. Today we will see whether there is any importance of the name used for baptism? Can baptism be considered valid or invalid by the use of a particular name, or not using it?

For the answer to this question, we will have to bear in mind the three purposes of baptism that we had seen initially. These three purposes are - 1.  It is meant to be an external, public witnessing of the inner transformation, of the changed life, brought about in the person by his confessing and repenting of sins, and coming into the Christian Faith. 2. Through taking baptism, the person is conveying to the world that he has placed himself in the hands of the Lord, and is now being prepared by the Lord for the eventual final accounting and judgment that everyone will have to face to receive their final rewards and consequences, for what they have done or left undone in their life, as a follower of Christ. 3. Taking baptism is an expression of one’s submission and surrender to God and His Word, of being committed to live in obedience to God; and in obedience are blessings. We have also seen that by being baptized neither does anyone become a Christian Believer, not is he saved or Born-Again; and because of not taking baptism no one ever loses their salvation or Christian Faith. But if baptism is not taken in the manner taught and instructed by the Lord, instead is done in the manner decided upon by men or institutions, then it is no longer the Lord’s baptism; rather, it becomes the baptism of those persons or institutions, done in obedience to those men and institutions.

With these in mind, it is clear that the importance is of taking baptism, and not of the names being mentioned at the time of baptism, or whether it is done in flowing water or standing water. When John the Baptist started baptizing, there is no mention of his speaking out any name while baptizing. But his baptism was a valid baptism, and the Lord Jesus too came to be baptized by him. According to Matthew 28:19, in Lord Jesus’s own words, baptism is to be given “in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit” - these three are the one Triune God, are completely equivalent to each other, none is any different than any other in any manner. When this Triune God was incarnated on earth in bodily form, He was named “Jesus;” in other words, Jesus is the name of the same, the one, Triune God, who came as the savior of the world (Matthew 1:21). Therefore, whether the name of one, or of the three of them is taken, it means and conveys the same thing - acknowledging and honoring the same God, and expressing love and obedience towards Him.

Consider the use of the phrase “in the name of.” In general conversation if this phrase is used, then without any confusion the people readily understand that it means to give honor to the person whose name is being used. For example, if someone donates something, or has something built or made, or organizes some function, etc., “in the name of” someone near and dear, then there is no problem in understanding that whatever has been done, is meant to honor or express love for the person in whose name it is done. The very same meaning, is just as true for baptism; whether baptism is taken in the name of Jesus or in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, it is meant to give honor to and in obedience to the one and same God.

Therefore, it makes no difference whatsoever, whether the baptism is done only in the name of the Lord Jesus or “in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit;” it means one and the same thing. This teaching that only the baptism given in the name of Lord Jesus is correct, otherwise not, has been spread by those sects and cults that do not accept and believe in the Triune God. Therefore, wherever possible, and however they can, they say and do things to create doubts and confusion about the Triune God, and preach false concepts. This wrong teaching about baptizing in a particular name is one of their ways of creating this doubt and confusion.

This is Satan’s ploy to use the name of God and the place of baptism to preach baptism being valid or invalid, and thereby to entangle people in vain arguments and discussions, and to subtly draw them into believing in righteousness by works of some kind. This way they draw the people’s attention away from forgiveness of sins by the grace of God and the simplicity of righteousness by Faith, and make them fall into vain arguments and conflicts, so that instead of repenting from sins and believing in the Lord Jesus, people remain occupied in fulfilling inconsequential sect or denomination related rituals and traditions, and get deviated away from the he ways of God.

Keeping these things in mind, it is clear that the importance is of taking baptism in obedience to God; and things like whether it is taken in flowing water or stagnant water, and what words or name is spoken while baptizing has no importance at all. Baptism done in the name of the Lord Jesus, or in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit are one and the same, equally correct, if done in fulfilment of the aforementioned purposes of baptism.

The Elementary Principles – 34

Baptisms - 13

 Baptism - When?

In our study on baptism from God’s Word the Bible, we have seen so far that in the initial Church, baptism was always given only to adults; to those who had heard the gospel, accepted it, and believed on it, and then either expressed the desire to be baptized or were consenting to be baptized. Also, in accordance with the literal meaning of the Greek word “baptizo”, baptism was always by immersion, not in any other manner; the people of the initial Church did not know of baptism by any other method. Today we will see, when should a person be baptized after coming into the Christian Faith.

Often, in the Believer’s Assemblies of Lord Jesus Christ, in Churches, and amongst people, this confusion and uncertainty is seen, when should a person be baptized? It is a common thinking that the person’s life and behavior should first be observed for some time, and if he is found to be okay in faith, only then should he be baptized. Though this seems to be a very logical and acceptable thought from human thinking and perspective, and is also the tradition of the Churches or Assemblies; but there is no support, example, or teaching in God’s Word for affirming it.

John the Baptist immediately baptized those who came to him confessing their sins and wanted to be baptized by him (Matthew 3:6); he did not ask for any evidence or proof from them of their changed lives. But the Pharisees and Sadducees who were infamous for their hypocritical lives, and wanted to get baptized without confessing their sins, only to fulfil a ritual or a formality, and wanted to get baptized only to show themselves as righteous to the people, John refused to baptize them; he asked them to first show through their lives the fruits of repentance and a changed life (Matthew 3:7-9).

In Acts chapter 2, the 3,000 Jews who accepted the Lord Jesus after Peter’s preaching, were baptized immediately (Acts 2:41), and no proof of a changed life was asked from them, nor were they put under any observation for any period of time.

Paul, then known as Saul, and was dreaded for persecuting the Church, was baptized soon after his encountering the Lord on the road to Damascus, without anyone asking or observing any change in his life (Acts 9:17-18); though Ananias, who brought God’s message to him, had doubts about him (Acts 9:13-15).

During Philip’s ministry in Samaria, Philip baptized the people of Samaria, including Simon the sorcerer, who was presenting himself the same as the other Believers, leaving his previous life, he was continuing with Phillip (Acts 8:12-13). But later, when Peter and John came from Jerusalem, then Simon’s actual condition was exposed, that he had not truly repented, and Peter asks him to sincerely repent (Acts 8:18-23). The important thing here for us in this incident, for our topic today, is that Peter and John never questioned or opposed Philip’s baptizing of Simon, did not admonish him for not being able to discern Simon’s actual state, nor asked him to remain alert in future about this happening again. This was a clear example of Simon taking baptism unworthily and of Philip not being able to correctly assess Simon; and this example could have well been used for teaching and instructions about these things, so that they would not be repeated. But God the Holy Spirit did not do this. Only God knows the actual status of any person’s repentance and change of heart, his Christian Faith. Man can and does make mistakes, and will keep making them; therefore, there is no teaching or instruction in God’s Word to first ascertain a person’s faith and only then baptize anyone.

Probably the best answer for when a Christian Believer should be baptized is in the baptism of the Ethiopian Eunuch by Philip (Acts 8:35-38). Here we see that not only did Philip baptize him immediately, but for our learning there are two things mentioned here.

The first is, the longing within the saved person to be baptized. From the preceding verses of Acts 8, we see that Philip preached the gospel to the eunuch from the book of Isaiah. But Isaiah has no mention of baptism. Therefore, it is evident that along with the gospel, in accordance with the Lord’ instructions of Matthew 28:19, Philip would have also told him about the Lord’s command to be baptized. That is why the desire to be baptized would have come into the heart of the Ethiopian Eunuch, and he expressed this desire to Philip. So, the first condition for baptism that can be inferred here is that the person, knowing the commandment of the Lord and its importance, should have this longing within himself to be baptized, and request for it. The Holy Spirit will encourage a true Christian Believer to live in obedience to the Lord’s commands and give him a desire to be baptized in his heart.

The second is, Philip’s confirming from him about it; Philip said to him that if he believes with all his heart, then he can be baptized. Take note, baptism was not meant to create a sincere belief in his heart, as is also evident from the example of Simon the sorcerer. Philip did not ask for any proof from the Ethiopian Eunuch about his faith, simply accepted his word for it, and baptized him.

We infer from this that the Christian Believer who accepts and believes in the gospel, repents of his sins, knows and understands the importance of baptism and its related teachings and instructions in God’s Word, if he considers himself ready for baptism, and asks for it, then it can be given to him. There is no need to ask for any proof, or to wait for any period of observation before baptizing him; nothing like this has been taught in God’s Word.

The Elementary Principles – 33

Baptisms - 12

Baptism - How?

In the previous two articles we have seen form God’s Word, the Bible that the baptism instructed by the Lord Jesus was always given and taken by adults; i.e., by those who had heard, accepted and believed the gospel, and were either consenting for it, or had asked to be baptized. In the Bible baptism has never been given passively, i.e., to a person, of any age, brought by someone else and then ‘baptized’, without his being aware of or understanding of what was being done to him, and why it was being done; he just remained a passive participant in the whole process that was carried out on him, without his knowledge or consent; as is always seen in infant or child ‘baptisms’, but this scenario is never seen in any baptism recorded in the Bible.

As we had seen earlier, the original Greek word “baptizo,” from which the English word “baptism” has been derived, to the people of the New Testament time meant being immersed or being dipped into, i.e., being covered by whatever liquid was being used for “baptizo.” So, for them there was no need to add some other words to specify that their use of “baptizo” meant being immersed or being dipped into. It was only much later, when different forms and ways of “baptism” started being practiced, that it became necessary to specify whether the “baptism” was by immersion, or by sprinkling, or by application of water to the forehead, or in some other manner. In its original form, and in the use of the Greek word “baptizo” in the original writings of the New Testament books and letters, it only meant one thing - being immersed into. That is why this immersion has never been specified through use of any other defining or clarifying word, since the word by itself meant just that. And this needs to be borne in mind when considering the various arguments put forward to justify the so-called non-immersion baptisms.

But still, with the use of this word “baptizo” in the New Testament texts, there are other clear and unambiguous indicators that whenever baptism was given or taken, it always implied immersion into the water, and never sprinkling or anything else. Consider some verses:

  • For the baptism given by John the Baptist, in Matthew 3:6 it is said that people came to John “and were baptized by him in the Jordan.” The use of “in” clarifies that the people being baptized went into the river Jordan. Had it not been so, it would have been written “using the water of the river Jordan.”

  • For John’s baptism, it says in John 3:23 that “Now John also was baptizing in Aenon near Salim, because there was much water there”; why would John use a place having much water, if all he needed was a little water to sprinkle or apply? John could have told the people to bring a little water with them when they came to him for baptism, if that is all that was required. Then there would have been no need for him to be at the riverside either, he could have given it in their homes.

  • For the baptism of the Lord Jesus, it is written in Matthew 3:16 and Mark 1:10 that immediately after being baptized the Lord came up from the water. The implication is obvious, He could come up from the water, only if He had first gone into it. And, why would He need to go into water, if mere sprinkling or application of water would have sufficed and served the purpose? If He went into the water, it could only be because of the literal meaning of the word “baptizo” - to be immersed or dipped into for being baptized. Now, if the baptism of the Lord Himself was by immersion, then can the followers of the Lord Jesus be baptized in any other manner; or, any ‘baptism’ done in some other manner be accepted as correct?

  • In the baptism of the Ethiopian Eunuch by Philip, it says in Acts 8:36-39, that on seeing some water by the roadside, the Eunuch asked to be baptized (verse 36). If all that was required was sprinkling or application of water, the Eunuch would have been carrying enough drinking water for that with him, or he could have waited till they reached some place where they could get a cup of clean water, which would have been sufficient, and there would have been no need for him to ask for baptism from a roadside place of water. Also, consider verse 38-39, where it is clearly mentioned that Philip and the Eunuch went into the water and came out of it. This would have been necessary only to fulfil the literal meaning of “baptizo”, not otherwise.

Wherever the act of baptism has been mentioned in God’s Word, an indicator has also been provided that it was through immersion. Otherwise, there is no mention of any “baptism” having being given by using water stored in pots in the houses, or by drawing from a well, or taking it from a small or shallow stream, etc., i.e., some water body into which the person cannot be immersed into water, but still had mere sprinkling or an application of water served the purpose, then it could have been done. The evident conclusion is that at the time of the first Church, as meant by the word “baptizo”, baptism was always and only by immersion. There is no evidence form God’s Word to support the concept of sprinkling or application of water or any other method for baptizing anyone. The only Biblically acceptable baptism is baptism by immersion; and this by itself rules out infant or child baptism, since it not only would be impractical but also dangerous to the lives of infants and children.

If you have not yet accepted the discipleship of the Lord, make your decision in favor of the Lord Jesus now to ensure your eternal life and heavenly blessings. Where there is obedience to the Lord, where there is respect and obedience to His Word, there is also the blessing and protection of the Lord. You can also make this prayer and submission in words something like, “Lord Jesus, I am sorry for my sins and repent of them.
