पिछले लेख में हमने 1 कुरिन्थियों 11:28 से देखा था कि प्रत्येक मसीही विश्वासी के लिए यह अनिवार्य है कि उसे पहले अपने आप को जाँचना है, अपने पापों, गलतियों, कमियों को पहचानना है, प्रभु के सामने उनका अंगीकार करना है, उससे उनके लिए क्षमा माँगनी है, और उसके बाद ही, योग्य रीति से मेज़ में भाग लेना है। यह स्वयं का आँकलन होना है, किसी अन्य का नहीं; और बुराइयों से स्वच्छ प्रभु के द्वारा किए जाना है, न कि मनुष्य के बनाए, किसी गढ़े हुए तरीके के द्वारा। आज हम इसी पद से स्वयं के आँकलन से सम्बन्धित कुछ और बातों को देखेंगे।

साथ ही इस बात पर भी ध्यान दीजिए कि 1 कुरिन्थियों 11:28 के दूसरे भाग “...इसी रीति से इस रोटी में से खाए, और इस कटोरे में से पीए” में, पौलुस में होकर पवित्र आत्मा इस बात को स्पष्ट कर देता है कि जब जाँचने का काम पूरा हो जाए, तब शिष्य को इसके बाद फिर मेज़ में भी भाग लेना ही है, न कि भाग लेने से बचना है, बचने का कोई बहाना बनाना है। इसलिए यह बात बिल्कुल स्पष्ट है कि मसीही विश्वासी के लिए प्रभु भोज में भाग लेना वैकल्पिक नहीं है; और यही बात इस मेज़ की स्थापना करते समय प्रभु यीशु ने भी अपने शिष्यों से कही थी, जैसा कि सुसमाचारों में लिखा हुआ है। प्रभु यीशु ने शिष्यों से ऐसा कुछ भी नहीं कहा जिसका अर्थ अथवा व्याख्या यह दिखाए कि आने वाले समयों में यह शिष्यों की इच्छा, समझ, और सुविधा पर होगा कि वे अपनी आत्मिक दशा के अनुसार प्रभु भोज में भाग लेंगे अथवा नहीं। बल्कि प्रभु यीशु ने उन्हें आज्ञा दी “...मेरे स्मरण के लिये यही किया करो” (लूका 22:1919); अर्थात, अपने आप को जाँचो, पापों को मानो, स्वच्छ और योग्य बनो, और मेज़ में भाग लो। परमेश्वर की आज्ञाएँ कभी भी किसी के लिए भी वैकल्पिक नहीं रहीं हैं, वे हमेशा ही अनिवार्य हैं; उनका हर कीमत पर पालन होना ही है, अन्यथा व्यक्ति को अनाज्ञाकारिता के दोष का जवाबदेह होना पड़ेगा। दूसरे शब्दों में, प्रभु के शिष्य को, यह जानते हुए कि उसे रोटी और कटोरे में भाग लेना ही है, पहले अपने आप को प्रभु के सामने स्वच्छ और योग्य बनाने के लिए आना है, और प्रभु द्वारा स्वच्छ और योग्य किए जाने के बाद उसे फिर भाग भी लेना है। भाग लेना उसके लिए वैकल्पिक नहीं है, उसकी अपनी इच्छा के अनुसार नहीं है, परन्तु प्रभु के प्रतिबद्ध शिष्य के लिए यह आवश्यक और अनिवार्य है। इसलिए यह प्रभु के शिष्यों की ज़िम्मेदारी है कि वे प्रभु की आज्ञा के अनुसार, अपने आप को प्रभु भोज में भाग लेने के लिए तैयार और योग्य बनाए रखें।

प्रभु द्वारा प्रभु भोज में भाग लेने को आज्ञा के रूप में देने को किसी को भी इसे गलत नहीं समझना चाहिए, पीछे नहीं हटना चाहिए। ऐसा करने के द्वारा प्रभु ने उनकी सुरक्षा का एक तरीका दिया है, अपने शिष्यों के चारों और एक सुरक्षा-कवच स्थापित किया है, ताकि वे शैतान की चालाकियों और युक्तियों से बचे रहें। क्योंकि यह करना प्रभु की आज्ञा है, इसलिए शिष्य को यह करना ही है, नहीं तो वह अनाज्ञाकारिता का दोषी ठहरेगा; लेकिन क्योंकि किसी को भी कभी भी इसमें अयोग्य रीति से भाग नहीं लेना है, इसलिए शिष्य को हमेशा पहले प्रभु के सामने आना पड़ेगा, अपने जीवन और गतिविधियों को उसके सामने खोल कर रखना पड़ेगा जिससे कि प्रभु उसे दिखा सके कि उसने कब और कहाँ पर क्या गलती की, फिर उसे उन गलतियों को मान कर, प्रभु से क्षमा माँगनी पड़ेगी, जिससे कि प्रभु उसे स्वच्छ और योग्य कर सके। इस प्रकार से शैतान ने जो भी पाप के बीज चालाकी और कुटिलता से उसके जीवन में बोए होंगे, वे प्रकट हो जाएंगे, निकाल कर बाहर फेंक दिए जाएंगे, इससे पहले कि वे उगें और उसके जीवन में जड़ पकड़ें, और उसके लिए कोई समस्या खड़ी करने पाएं। किन्तु यदि यह प्रभु की आज्ञा नहीं होती, यदि यह शिष्य की इच्छा और समझ पर छोड़ दिया गया होता, तो शैतान किसी न किसी रीति से उसे कभी भी भाग नहीं लेने देता, उसे सदा ही उसके अयोग्य होने को दिखाता और बताता रहता; जबकि शैतान द्वारा उसके जीवन में बोए गए पाप के बीज उगकर जड़ पकड़ते रहते, बढ़ते रहते और उसके जीवन में गंभीर समस्याएं खड़ी कर देते। इस तरीके से, आज्ञा बनाने के द्वारा, प्रभु ने मसीही विश्वासी के, प्रभु की आज्ञाकारिता और परमेश्वर पर विश्वास जीवन को खोखला और खराब कर देने की शैतान की युक्ति को लागू होने से पहले ही विफल कर दिया। किन्तु जो इस बात को नहीं समझते हैं, प्रभु भोज को एक परंपरा के समान या वैकल्पिक समझते हैं, उनके जीवनों में शैतान को गंभीर समस्याएं उत्पन्न करने का अवसर बना रहता है, और वे बहुत गंभीर खतरे से खेल रहे हैं।

अगले लेख में हम इससे और आगे सीखेंगे, तथा वचन के अन्य स्थानों से भी देखेंगे और सीखेंगे कि प्रभु भोज में भाग लेना क्यों वैकल्पिक नहीं है, शिष्यों की अपनी इच्छा के अनुसार नहीं, वरन उनके लिए अनिवार्य है।

यदि आप एक मसीही विश्वासी हैं, और प्रभु की मेज़ में भाग लेते रहे हैं, तो कृपया अपने जीवन को जाँच कर देख लें कि आप वास्तव में पापों से छुड़ाए गए हैं तथा आप ने अपना जीवन प्रभु की आज्ञाकारिता में जीने के लिए उस को समर्पित किया है। आपके लिए यह अनिवार्य है कि आप परमेश्वर के वचन की सही शिक्षाओं को जानने के द्वारा एक परिपक्व विश्वासी बनें, तथा सभी शिक्षाओं को वचन की कसौटी पर परखने, और बेरिया के विश्वासियों के समान, लोगों की बातों को पहले वचन से जाँचने और उनकी सत्यता को निश्चित करने के बाद ही उनको स्वीकार करने और मानने वाले बनें (प्रेरितों 17:11; 1 थिस्सलुनीकियों 5:21)। अन्यथा शैतान द्वारा छोड़े हुए झूठे प्रेरित और भविष्यद्वक्ता मसीह के सेवक बन कर (2 कुरिन्थियों 11:13-15) अपनी ठग विद्या और चतुराई से आपको प्रभु के लिए अप्रभावी कर देंगे और आप के मसीही जीवन एवं आशीषों का नाश कर देंगे।

यदि आपने प्रभु की शिष्यता को अभी तक स्वीकार नहीं किया है, तो अपने अनन्त जीवन और स्वर्गीय आशीषों को सुनिश्चित करने के लिए अभी प्रभु यीशु के पक्ष में अपना निर्णय कर लीजिए। जहाँ प्रभु की आज्ञाकारिता है, उसके वचन की बातों का आदर और पालन है, वहाँ प्रभु की आशीष और सुरक्षा भी है। प्रभु यीशु से अपने पापों के लिए क्षमा माँगकर, स्वेच्छा से तथा सच्चे मन से अपने आप को उसकी अधीनता में समर्पित कर दीजिए - उद्धार और स्वर्गीय जीवन का यही एकमात्र मार्ग है। आपको स्वेच्छा और सच्चे मन से प्रभु यीशु मसीह से केवल एक छोटी प्रार्थना करनी है, और साथ ही अपना जीवन उसे पूर्णतः समर्पित करना है। आप यह प्रार्थना और समर्पण कुछ इस प्रकार से भी कर सकते हैं, “प्रभु यीशु मैं आपका धन्यवाद करता हूँ कि आपने मेरे पापों की क्षमा और समाधान के लिए उन पापों को अपने ऊपर लिया, उनके कारण मेरे स्थान पर क्रूस की मृत्यु सही, गाड़े गए, और मेरे उद्धार के लिए आप तीसरे दिन जी भी उठे, और आज जीवित प्रभु परमेश्वर हैं। कृपया मेरे पापों को क्षमा करें, मुझे अपनी शरण में लें, और मुझे अपना शिष्य बना लें। मैं अपना जीवन आप के हाथों में समर्पित करता हूँ।” सच्चे और समर्पित मन से की गई आपकी एक प्रार्थना आपके वर्तमान तथा भविष्य को, इस लोक के और परलोक के जीवन को, अनन्तकाल के लिए स्वर्गीय एवं आशीषित बना देगी।

The Lord’s Table - A Commandment; Not Optional (2)

 

In the previous article, we had seen from 1 Corinthians 11:28, that it is mandatory for every Christian Believer, to first examine himself, identify his sins, faults, and short-comings, confess them to the Lord, seek His forgiveness, and then participate in the Table in a worthy manner. It has to be a self-examination, not of anyone else; and the cleansing for the wrongs has to be by the Lord, and not by any man-made, contrived methods. Today, we will see some more things from this verse about this self-examination, to worthily partake of the Lord’s Table.

Do also take note that here in the second part of 1 Corinthians 11:28, “...and so let him eat of the bread and drink of the cup” the Holy Spirit through Paul, makes it evident and clear that after the examination part is completed, the disciple should follow it up by participating in the Communion, and not make any excuses to avoid taking part in it. Hence it is quite clear that participation in the Holy Communion is not optional for the Christian Believer; and the same was said by the Lord to His disciples when instituting the Lord’s Table, as given in the Gospel accounts. The Lord did not say anything to the disciples that could in any way be understood or interpreted as leaving their participation in the Table in the times to come to their discretion, understanding, or convenience, depending upon their spiritual status at that time. Rather, the Lord Jesus gave the disciples a command - “…do this in remembrance of me” (Luke 22:19); i.e., examine, confess, and be cleansed, and then participate. God’s commands are never optional for anybody, but are always mandatory; they have to be obeyed at any cost, or the person has to face accountability for the disobedience. In other words, the disciple of the Lord, knowing that he has to partake in the bread and cup, has to first come to the Lord for his cleansing, and then after being cleansed he is to partake of the Table. It is not optional for him, nor at his discretion, but necessary for the Lord’s committed disciples. It is therefore the responsibility of the disciple to make himself ready and worthy of obeying the Lord and participating in the Holy Communion worthily.

One should not misunderstand or draw back because of the Lord’s giving this command and making it mandatory for the disciples to participate in the Holy Communion. Through this, the Lord has given a protective mechanism, a shield around His disciples, to keep them safe and secure from the wiles of the devil. Since it is the Lord’s command, therefore, the disciple is to obey it or he will be guilty of disobedience; but since no one should participate unworthily, therefore the disciple always has to first come to the Lord, open out his life and activities to him, let the Lord point out to him where he went wrong and in what manner. Once he is aware of any sin or worldliness in his life, he is to confess it, and ask the Lord for forgiveness, so that the Lord can cleanse him. So, any seeds of sin that Satan may have cunningly or subtly sown in the disciple’s life, will be made manifest and thrown out, before they can germinate, take root, and create any serious problems in the disciple’s life. But had it not been the Lord’s commandment, if it were left to the disciple’s discretion and understanding, Satan, in some way or the other, will never allow him to participate, always reminding him of his being unworthy, while the satanic seeds of sin germinate, grow, and take root in his life, and eventually bring him to great harm. The Lord through this method has pre-empted Satan’s ploy to undermine and harm the Christian Believer’s life of faith and of obedience to the Lord.

If you are a Christian Believer and have been participating in the Lord’s Table, then please examine your life and make sure that you are actually a disciple of the Lord, i.e., are redeemed from your sins, have submitted and surrendered your life to the Lord Jesus to live in obedience to Him and His Word. You should also always, like the Berean Believers, first check and test all teachings that you receive from the Word of God, and only after ascertaining the truth and veracity of the teachings brought to you by men, should you accept and obey them (Acts 17:11; 1 Thessalonians 5:21). If you do not do this, the false apostles and prophets sent by Satan as ministers of Christ (2 Corinthians 11:13-15), will by their trickery, cunningness, and craftiness render you ineffective for the Lord and cause severe damage to your Christian life and your rewards.

    If you have not yet accepted the discipleship of the Lord Jesus, then to ensure your eternal life and heavenly rewards, take a decision in favor of the Lord Jesus now. Wherever there is surrender and obedience towards the Lord Jesus, the Lord’s blessings and safety are also there. If you are still not Born Again, have not obtained salvation, or have not asked the Lord Jesus for forgiveness for your sins, then you have the opportunity to do so right now. A short prayer said voluntarily with a sincere heart, with heartfelt repentance for your sins, and a fully submissive attitude, “Lord Jesus, I confess that I have disobeyed You, and have knowingly or unknowingly, in mind, in thought, in attitude, and in deeds, committed sins. I believe that you have fully borne the punishment of my sins by your sacrifice on the cross, and have paid the full price of those sins for all eternity. Please forgive my sins, change my heart and mind towards you, and make me your disciple, take me with you." God longs for your company and wants to see you blessed, but to make this possible, is your personal decision. Will you not say this prayer now, while you have the time and opportunity to do so - the decision is yours.

इसीलिए 1 कुरिन्थियों 11:28 में प्रभु के शिष्यों, मसीही विश्वासियों के लिए आज्ञा दी गई है, प्रभु की मेज़ में भाग लेने से पहले अपने आप को जाँच लें। प्रेरित पौलुस ने यह पत्री कुरिन्थुस की कलीसिया, वहाँ रहने वाले मसीही विश्वासियों के लिए लिखी है। ध्यान कीजिए, यह पद किसी भी रीति से यह करना, भाग लेने वाले की इच्छा या समझ पर नहीं छोड़ता है; यह नहीं कहता है कि ऐसा करना तो चाहिए, परन्तु तुम्हारी इच्छा है कि यह करो अथवा नहीं। वरन इसे एक अनिवार्यता के रूप में सामने रखता है, “इसलिये मनुष्य अपने आप को जांच ले...” - भाग लेने वाले को अपने आप को जाँचना ही है, उसके बाद ही भाग लेना है। नया-जन्म पाए हुए मसीही विश्वासी, प्रभु में अपनी आत्मिक स्थिति के कारण, यदि सदा ही स्वतः ही प्रभु भोज में भाग लेने के योग्य रहते, तो फिर पवित्र आत्मा को पौलुस के द्वारा, उन्हें अपने आप को जाँचने की यह आज्ञा लिखवाने की क्या आवश्यकता थी? लेकिन उनके लिए प्रभु भोज में भाग लेने से पहले अपने आप को जाँचना अनिवार्य करने के द्वारा, प्रभु परमेश्वर ने यह सुनिश्चित कर दिया है कि उसका कोई भी शिष्य, कभी भी, किसी भी अनुचित रीति से इसमें भाग न लेने पाए।

साथ ही यह भी ध्यान करें कि भाग लेने वाले को अपने को केवल जाँचना है; यहाँ यह निर्देश नहीं दिया गया है कि अपने किसी गढ़े हुए तरीके से अपने आप को स्वच्छ भी करना है। यह इसलिए, क्योंकि उसे स्वच्छ करना फिर प्रभु का काम है, जैसा कि प्रतीकात्मक रीति से प्रभु ने पाँवधोने के द्वारा दिखाया है। जाँचने के द्वारा, भाग लेने वाले को अपने पापों, गलतियों, कमजोरियों को पहचानना है, प्रभु के सामने उन्हें स्वीकार करना है, उनके लिए पश्चाताप करना है, और प्रभु से उनके लिए क्षमा माँगनी है, जिससे कि 1 यूहन्ना 1:9 के अनुसार, प्रभु उसे फिर से बहाल कर सके और उसे मेज़ में भाग लेने के योग्य बना सके।

साथ ही, यह पद इस बात को भी बिल्कुल स्पष्ट कर देती है कि किसी को भी, किसी अन्य व्यक्ति का आँकलन नहीं करना है, किसी अन्य की गलतियों और कमियों की पहचान नहीं करनी है। वरन्, प्रत्येक को स्वयं को ही जाँचना है; तात्पर्य यह कि, प्रत्येक बार प्रभु भोज में भाग लेने के समय, उनके द्वारा किया गया अपना आँकलन, अवश्य ही कुछ न कुछ ऐसा दिखाएगा जिसे प्रत्येक विश्वासी को अंगीकार करने, त्याग देने, और उस से स्वच्छ किए जाने की आवश्यकता होगी, जिस से कि वह प्रभु में और विश्वास में बढ़ सके, और प्रभु के लिए उपयोगी हो सके।

अगले लेख में हम इस पद पर विचार को ज़ारी रखेंगे, और इस के कुछ अन्य अभिप्रायों के बारे में देखेंगे।

The Lord’s Table - A Commandment; Not Optional (1)

      

In the previous article, we had reviewed from 1 Corinthians 11:27, that those participating in the Lord’s Table should do so worthily, or in a worthy manner. We had also reviewed that at the time the Lord Jesus instituted the Holy Communion, even the very disciples for whom He was doing it, were not sinless or perfect; there was an ego situation amongst them and they were quarrelling about who amongst them was the greatest (Luke 22:24-26). But the Lord, through washing their feet, symbolically showed that those who allow Him to cleanse them of the “dust of worldliness”, can then participate in the Table, after He, and not they themselves by their own means and methods, has cleansed them. We then saw from 1 John 1:7-10, that everyone, even the disciples of Christ, sin - notice that the Apostle John, through the use of the word “we” throughout this chapter and in these verses 7-10, includes even himself amongst those who sin and are in need of the Lord’s forgiveness and restoration from sin. We then saw that this therefore makes it apparent that by themselves, no one, not even the Born-Again Christian Believers are worthy of participating in the Lord’s Table in their natural or routine situation. Since they would be having some sin or the other in their lives, that would have to be dealt with, and cleansed by the Lord, before they were made worthy to participate in the Holy Communion.

Hence, the command of 1 Corinthians 11:28, for the Lord’s disciples is that the Christian Believers, examine themselves before participating in the Lord’s Table. The Apostle Paul, under the guidance of the Holy Spirit has written this to the Church in Corinth, to the Christian Believers there. Note, that this verse does not in any manner leave the examination to the discretion of the participant; nor does it make the disciple’s examining themselves as something desirable, but optional. Rather, it puts it forth as an imperative, “But let a man examine himself, …” - the participant must examine himself, and only then participate. If the Born-Again Christian Believers, by virtue of their spiritual status in the Lord, and as children of God, were always worthy of participating in the Communion, why would the Holy Spirit through Paul command them to necessarily examine themselves before participating? But in making it mandatory for them to examine themselves before participation, the Lord God has ensured that none of His disciples would in any circumstances or situation, ever participate in an unworthy manner.

Also note that this verse asks the participant only to examine himself; it does not instruct to try to somehow through his own contrived methods cleanse himself. This is because this cleansing is the Lord’s work, as we have seen in the symbolic washing of the feet. Through self-examination, the participant has to identify his sins, errors, and short-comings; confess them before the Lord, repent of them and seek His forgiveness for them, so that in accordance with 1 John 1:9, the Lord can restore him and make him worthy of participating in the Table.

Moreover, this verse also makes it quite clear that no one is to examine and analyze any other person, identify another’s faults and short-comings. Rather, each one is to examine self; implying that at every participation in the Holy Communion, their self-examination will reveal things that each Believer needs to confess, forsake, and be cleansed from, to grow in the Lord and in the Faith, and be useful for the Lord.

In the next article, we will continue considering this verse, and see some other implications of this verse.

पिछले लेख में हमने प्रभु के शिष्यों, नया जन्म पाए हुए विश्वासियों के द्वारा, भोज में भाग लेने से पहले, स्वयं को जाँचने, अपनी गलतियों और पापों का अंगीकार करके प्रभु से क्षमा माँगने, और उस के द्वारा शुद्ध किए जाने के महत्व और अनिवार्यता के बारे देखा था। आज हम प्रभु के द्वारा शुद्ध किए जाने से सम्बन्धित कुछ और बातों को देखेंगे।

सीधी सी बात यही है कि अपनी स्वाभाविक या सामान्य स्थिति में कोई भी प्रभु की मेज़ में भाग लेने के योग्य कभी नहीं होता है, जैसा कि हम 1 यूहन्ना 1:8, 10 से देखते हैं; हर एक जन पाप करता है, मसीही विश्वासी और प्रभु के शिष्य भी; और जो कोई यह कहता है कि उसमें कोई पाप नहीं है, वह परमेश्वर को झूठा ठहराता है - जो होना संभव नहीं है, और यह असंभवता स्वतः ही उनके निष्पाप होने के दावे को तुरन्त ही झूठा साबित कर देती है। इस बात को प्रभु यीशु ने शिष्यों के पाँव धोने के द्वारा बहुत अच्छी तरह से कहा और समझाया है (यूहन्ना 13:4-15)। जब प्रभु यह कार्य कर रहा था, और वह पतरस के पास पहुँचा, तब पतरस सहमत नहीं था कि प्रभु उसके पाँव धोए। उस समय प्रभु यीशु ने कुछ बहुत महत्वपूर्ण कहा था जिसका हमारे संदर्भ में बहुत महत्व है। प्रभु यीशु ने पतरस से कहा कि यद्यपि वह “नहा चुका है,” साफ है, किन्तु फिर भी उसे समय-समय पर पाँव धुलवाने की आवश्यकता है। संसार में चलते समय, अर्थात संसार के साथ संपर्क में आने के कारण, पतरस तथा अन्य सभी के पाँवों पर, उनके संसार से संपर्क के स्थान पर, सांसारिकता की धूल लग जाती है। उन्हें उस सांसारिकता की धूल से साफ होने के लिए आवश्यक है कि वे समय-समय पर प्रभु यीशु को उन्हें साफ करने दें “...यदि मैं तुझे न धोऊं, तो मेरे साथ तेरा कुछ भी साझा नहीं।”

ठीक से उनकी सफाई किए जाने के लिए यह आवश्यक था कि वे बारंबार प्रभु यीशु के पास इसके लिए आते रहें। प्रभु उनकी सफाई करने का अनिच्छुक नहीं था, वरन वह तो इच्छुक है, प्रतीक्षा में है और चाहता है कि उसके लोग उसके पास आएं, उनमें विद्यमान सांसारिकता की धूल, पाप का अंगीकार करें, और प्रभु को उन्हें साफ कर लेने तथा योग्य बना लेने दें। इसीलिए, जब तक कि प्रभु की मेज में भाग लेने वाला हमेशा ही भाग लेने से पहले अपने को जाँचते हुए, पापों को मानते और उनके लिए पश्चाताप करके परमेश्वर से उनके लिए क्षमा प्राप्त नहीं कर लेता है, तब तक वह कभी भी योग्य रीत से प्रभु की मेज़ में भाग नहीं लेने पाएगा। भाग लेने से पहले सभी को यह करना है, क्योंकि सभी के जीवनों में कोई न कोई पाप अवश्य होता है, जो उन्हें अयोग्य बनाता है। लेकिन प्रभु यीशु द्वारा दिए गए इस तरीके के द्वारा, प्रत्येक नया जन्म पाया हुआ मसीही विश्वासी, हमेशा प्रभु भोज में भाग लेता रह सकता है, यदि उसके अन्दर भाग लेने की एक सच्ची और खरी लालसा है, कि वह उसकी आज्ञाकारिता के द्वारा, प्रभु यीशु को आदर दे, प्रभु द्वारा उसके प्रतिबद्ध शिष्यों को दिए गए निर्देशों का पालन करे।

The Lord’s Table - Being Worthy to Participate (2)

 

In the previous article, we had seen about the importance and necessity of the disciples of the Lord Jesus, the Born-Again Believers, to examine themselves, confess their sins and short-comings, ask the Lord’s forgiveness for them, and then participate in the Lord’s Table. Today, we will see a couple of things about the cleansing by the Lord.

The simple fact of the matter is, that in his normal or usual state, no one is ever worthy of participating in the Lord’s Table, since as we see from 1 John 1:8, 10, everybody sins, including the Christian Believers and Lord’s disciples; and anyone claiming to have no sin, makes God a liar - an impossibility that by itself immediately nullifies their claim of being without sin. This was stated and well-illustrated by the Lord Jesus in His washing the feet of the disciples (John 13:4-15). As the Lord was doing this, when He came to Peter, Peter was not willing to have the Lord wash His feet. At that time the Lord said something very important in John 13:8 and 10, which is of great significance and relevance here. Lord Jesus said to Peter that although he was “bathed and clean”, but he still needed to have his feet washed from time to time. While walking in the world, i.e., interacting with the world, Peter as well as everyone else would get the “dust” of the worldliness on their feet, i.e., their point of contact with the world. To cleanse them from the “dust of the world”, it was necessary for them to let the Lord Jesus Himself, wash and cleanse them from time to time, "If I do not wash you, you have no part with Me".

To have proper cleansing done, it was essential that time and again they had to keep coming to the Lord, for Him to cleanse them. The Lord is not averse to doing so, rather is willingly waiting and desirous that His people would come to Him, acknowledging the presence of their “dust”, i.e., their worldliness and sin, and allow Him to cleanse them from it, make them clean and worthy once again. Therefore, without the participant always examining, acknowledging, confessing, and seeking God’s forgiveness, no one can ever participate in the Holy Communion, because some sin or the other is always in everyone’s life, always rendering them unworthy of participation. But through this method given by the Lord Jesus, every Born-Again Christian Believer can always participate, provided he has a sincere and honest desire to honor the Lord by being obedient to the Lord’s instructions, given to His committed disciples.

In the next article we will learn further from this verse, and see why participating in the Communion cannot be optional and at the discretion of the Lord’s disciples. If you are a Christian Believer and have been participating in the Lord’s Table, then please examine your life and make sure that you are actually a disciple of the Lord, i.e., are redeemed from your sins, have submitted and surrendered your life to the Lord Jesus to live in obedience to Him and His Word. You should also always, like the Berean Believers, first check and test all teachings that you receive from the Word of God, and only after ascertaining the truth and veracity of the teachings brought to you by men, should you accept and obey them (Acts 17:11; 1 Thessalonians 5:21). If you do not do this, the false apostles and prophets sent by Satan as ministers of Christ (2 Corinthians 11:13-15), will by their trickery, cunningness, and craftiness render you ineffective for the Lord and cause severe damage to your Christian life and your rewards.

कुरिन्थुस की मण्डली को लिखी अपनी दूसरी पत्री में भी पौलुस उन्हें स्वयं को जाँचने के लिए  कहता है, “अपने आप को परखो, कि विश्वास में हो कि नहीं; अपने आप को जाँचो, क्या तुम अपने विषय में यह नहीं जानते, कि यीशु मसीह तुम में है, नहीं तो तुम निकम्मे निकले हो” (2 कुरिन्थियों  13:5)। मसीही विश्वासियों के लिए, यह स्वयं को जाँचते रहना बहुत आवश्यक है। वे कभी निश्चिन्त होकर नहीं बैठ सकते हैं, क्योंकि शैतान किसी न किसी रीति से उन्हें मलिन करने के लिए कुछ न कुछ करता ही रहता है। इस जाँचने में सहायता के लिए परमेश्वर ने विश्वासियों को दो बहुत महत्वपूर्ण साधन दिए हैं। पहला है परमेश्वर पवित्र आत्मा, जो उन्हें पाप के लिए कायल करता हैं (यूहन्ना 16:8-9); और दूसरा है परमेश्वर का वचन (इब्रानीयों 4:12), जो मनों को छेदता है, अन्दर की बातों, और सच्चाईयों को प्रकट करता है। और प्रत्येक विश्वासी को प्रभु भोज में भाग लेने से पहले, प्रभु द्वारा दिए गए इन संसाधनों का अपने जीवन में प्रयोग करना चाहिए।

The Lord’s Table - Being Worthy to Participate (1)

 

        In the last two articles, we have seen from 1 Corinthians 11:27, what it means to participate in the Holy Communion in an unworthy manner and then in a worthy manner, respectively. Based on the word used in the original Greek language, translated “unworthily” or in an “unworthy manner”; any participation in a manner, or purpose, in any way any different from the one instituted by the Lord Jesus while establishing the Lord’s Table for His committed disciples, will be participating “unworthily” or in an “unworthy manner.” We had also seen in the last article that this does not mean that only those who are sinless and perfect can participate in the Holy Communion; for this will be an impossibility - even the disciples sitting with the Lord at the time of the initiation of the Holy Communion were not sinless or perfect. What it means is that the participants should be willing to acknowledge, confess, and repent of their sins before the Lord, and get the promised benefit of 1 John 1:7-10, particularly of verse 9 here, from God, and be made worthy of participating in the Holy Communion, instead of hiding their sins or persisting in them.

On this basis, the Holy Spirit, through Paul, in 1 Corinthians 11:28, gives the method of participating worthily in the Lord’s Table, even though the participant’s life initially may not be worthy of doing so. Remember, as we have seen earlier from 1 Corinthians 11:25-26, the participants in the Lord’s Table at the time of participation are remembering the Lord Jesus’s life and sacrifice for them, and through their participation, they are proclaiming His death. So, in effect, mentally and spiritually, they are in the presence of the Lord’s life, the purpose of His coming to earth, the reason of His sacrificing His life for them. Now, in this state, the participant should ask himself the question, “since the Lord out of His love and care for me, sacrificed His life, so that I can be delivered from sin, be eternally reconciled with God and be at peace with Him (Romans 5:1, 11), therefore, is there anything in my life that is offensive to God, is not pleasing to Him, is contrary to His Word, and is creating a barrier between God and myself (Isaiah 59:1-2) and hindering my spiritual life?” The Participant, before partaking in the Table, has to examine his own life, praying to God to show him the sins he has to acknowledge, confess, and seek forgiveness for. Then whatever God points out in his life, he should get it corrected from God on the basis of 1 John 1:9.

In his second letter to the Church in Corinth, Paul again asks them to examine themselves, “Examine yourselves as to whether you are in the faith. Test yourselves. Do you not know yourselves, that Jesus Christ is in you?--unless indeed you are disqualified” (2 Corinthians 13:5). This repeatedly examining themselves, is very important for the Christian Believers. They can never take things for granted, and rest assured, since Satan is continually doing something or the other to ‘dirty’ them in one way or another. To help in this examination, God has given two very important resources to the Believers. The first is God the Holy Spirit, who convicts them of their sins (John 16:8-9); and the second is God’s Word (Hebrews 4:12), that pierces the hearts, and exposes the inner things, and all truth. Every Believer, before participating in the Holy Communion, must use these resources given by the Lord in their lives.

God longs for your company and wants to see you blessed, but to make this possible, is your personal decision. Will you not say this prayer now, while you have the time and opportunity to do so - the decision is yours.

प्रभु की मेज़ - योग्य रीति से भाग लेना

     पिछले लेख में हमने 1 कुरिन्थियों 11:27 से देखा था कि प्रभु की मेज़ में अनुचित रीति से भाग लेने का अर्थ है उसमें प्रभु द्वारा फसह के समय अपने शिष्यों के साथ मेज़ की स्थापना करते समय दिए गए तरीके से भिन्न प्रकार से भाग लेना। हम पहले के लेखों में देख चुके हैं कि परमेश्वर हमेशा ही उसके द्वारा दिए गए निर्देशों और आज्ञाओं के निर्वाह के लिए बहुत अनिवार्य रहा है, विशेषकर उसके आदर और आराधना से संबंधित बातों के प्रति। परमेश्वर ने कभी भी उसके द्वारा दी गई आज्ञाओं और निर्देशों में किसी के भी द्वारा कोई परिवर्तन या ‘सुधार’ या किसी की व्यक्तिगत व्याख्या के अनुसार निर्वाह को अनुमति नहीं दी है, ऐसा करना स्वीकार नहीं किया है। यही बात प्रभु भोज के लिए भी लागू होती है। प्रभु यीशु ने प्रभु भोज की स्थापना अपने प्रतिबद्ध शिष्यों के लिए की थी, जो उसके साथ परीक्षाओं में भी लगातार बने रहे (लूका 22:28)। प्रभु ने मेज़ में भाग लेने के बारे में केवल उन्हें ही निर्देश दिए थे; यहूदा इस्करियोती ने प्रभु द्वारा स्थापित मेज़ में भाग नहीं लिया था। इससे हम यह सीख सकते हैं कि प्रभु भोज केवल परमेश्वर के समर्पित और प्रतिबद्ध लोगों के लिए ही है, उनके लिए जो उसके लिए खड़े होने के लिए तैयार हैं; न कि उनके लिए जो किसी रीति अथवा अनुष्ठान के निर्वाह के द्वारा, या किसी स्वार्थ के अंतर्गत प्रभु के साथ संबंधित और जुड़े हुए रहते हैं।

     हम यह भी देख चुके हैं कि फसह मनाने के लिए अपने निज परिवारों के पास जाने के स्थान पर, प्रभु के साथ बने रहने और उसके निर्देशों के अनुसार फसह की तैयारी करने और भाग लेने के द्वारा उन शिष्यों ने प्रभु यीशु के प्रति आज्ञाकारिता और प्रतिबद्धता के एक स्तर को दिखाया; यह ऐसी बात है जो वर्तमान में प्रभु भोज में रीति के समान भाग लेने वालों में बहुत ही कम देखने को मिलती है। लेकिन इसका यह अर्थ भी नहीं है कि वे शिष्य बिल्कुल निष्पाप और आलोचना से परे थे, फसह के भोज के लिए बैठे होने के बावजूद, उनमें विवाद चल रहा था कि उनमें से बड़ा कौन है (लूका 22:24-27)। शायद इसीलिए प्रभु यीशु ने भोजन से उठकर शिष्यों के पाँव धोए थे, जैसा कि यूहन्ना 13:4-17 में लिखा है; यहूदा इस्करियोती के भी, क्योंकि वह फसह के भोज में तो सम्मिलित था, किन्तु रोटी का टुकड़ा लेते ही बाहर चला गया था (यूहन्ना 13:30)। उसके बाहर चले जाने के बाद ही प्रभु यीशु ने प्रभु भोज की स्थापना की थी, जिसे हम पहले देख चुके हैं। प्रभु को यह भी पता था कि थोड़े ही समय में उसके शिष्य क्या करने वाले हैं। अपने सभी दावों के विपरीत, वे न तो उसके साथ प्रार्थना करने के लिए जागेंगे, और न ही जब लोग उसे पकड़ने आएंगे, तब उसके साथ खड़े रहेंगे, वरन उसे अकेला छोड़ कर भाग खड़े होंगे। लेकिन प्रभु को यह भी पता था कि वे उसे हमेशा के लिए नहीं त्याग देंगे, उसकी मृत्यु के बाद भी वापस अपने परिवारों और व्यवसाय को नहीं लौटेंगे। इसके बाद वे पश्चातापी होंगे, और प्रभु के पुनरुत्थान के बाद, एक बार जब उनकी प्रतिबद्धता फिर से नई हो जाएगी, ये ही लोग सारे संसार में जाकर हर कीमत पर सुसमाचार को सुनाएंगे। उसे पता था कि उनके पश्चाताप और प्रतिबद्धता का आने वाले दिनों में क्या परिणाम होगा।

     इसलिए यह मानना कि केवल बिल्कुल सिद्ध और निष्पाप लोग ही प्रभु की मेज़ में भाग ले सकते हैं, नासमझी है, तथ्यों की गलत व्याख्या है। प्रभु द्वारा अपने चूक और गलतियाँ करने वाले शिष्यों के लिए मेज़ को स्थापित करना, इस धारणा का समर्थन नहीं करता है। प्रभु को पता है कि कोई भी मनुष्य कभी निष्पाप और सिद्ध नहीं हो सकता है; सभी को, उसके प्रतिबद्ध शिष्यों को भी पश्चाताप करने और क्षमा माँगने की आवश्यकता होगी (1 यूहन्ना 1:7-10)। इसलिए प्रभु की मेज़ में भाग लेने वालों को ऐसे लोग होना चाहिए जो अपने पापों और कमियों को मानने के लिए, उनके लिए क्षमा माँगने के लिए तैयार हों; वे प्रभु के साथ बने रहने और उसकी आज्ञाकारिता में चलने वाले होने चाहिएं, अपनी असिद्धता, अपूर्णता के बावजूद भी। प्रभु को जो बात कतई स्वीकार्य नहीं है, वह है घमण्ड, स्व-धर्मी रवैया, और गढ़ी हुई धार्मिकता। हम इसके बारे में तथा प्रभु की मेज़ में भाग लेने के बारे में कुछ और देखेंगे और सीखेंगे, अगले कुछ लेखों में इससे आगे के पदों का अध्ययन करते हुए।

     प्रभु के मेज़ में योग्य रीति से भाग लेने से संबंधित कुछ अन्य बातों को - प्रभु भोज में प्रभु के जीवन और उद्देश्य को स्मरण करते हुए भाग लेना, उसकी मृत्यु और पुनरुत्थान का प्रचार करना और उसके गवाह होना, तथा रोटी और कटोरे को चिह्नों के रूप में इस्तेमाल करना, आदि के बारे में हम पहले देख चुके हैं। अगले लेख में हम देखेंगे प्रभु द्वारा दिए गए उस तरीके को जिसके द्वारा असिद्ध, गलतियाँ करने वाले, और पाप करने की संभावना में बने रहने वाले प्रभु के शिष्य भी किस प्रकार से, प्रभु के प्रति आज्ञाकारिता के अंतर्गत मेज़ में योग्य रीति से भाग ले सकते हैं, बिना अपने ऊपर प्रभु के न्याय को न्यौता दिए।

     यदि आप एक मसीही विश्वासी हैं, और प्रभु की मेज़ में भाग लेते रहे हैं, तो कृपया अपने जीवन को जाँच कर देख लें कि आप वास्तव में पापों से छुड़ाए गए हैं तथा आप ने अपना जीवन प्रभु की आज्ञाकारिता में जीने के लिए उस को समर्पित किया है। आपके लिए यह अनिवार्य है कि आप परमेश्वर के वचन की सही शिक्षाओं को जानने के द्वारा एक परिपक्व विश्वासी बनें, तथा सभी शिक्षाओं को वचन की कसौटी पर परखने, और बेरिया के विश्वासियों के समान, लोगों की बातों को पहले वचन से जाँचने और उनकी सत्यता को निश्चित करने के बाद ही उनको स्वीकार करने और मानने वाले बनें (प्रेरितों 17:11; 1 थिस्सलुनीकियों 5:21)। अन्यथा शैतान द्वारा छोड़े हुए झूठे प्रेरित और भविष्यद्वक्ता मसीह के सेवक बन कर (2 कुरिन्थियों 11:13-15) अपनी ठग विद्या और चतुराई से आपको प्रभु के लिए अप्रभावी कर देंगे और आप के मसीही जीवन एवं आशीषों का नाश कर देंगे।

     यदि आपने प्रभु की शिष्यता को अभी तक स्वीकार नहीं किया है, तो अपने अनन्त जीवन और स्वर्गीय आशीषों को सुनिश्चित करने के लिए अभी प्रभु यीशु के पक्ष में अपना निर्णय कर लीजिए। जहाँ प्रभु की आज्ञाकारिता है, उसके वचन की बातों का आदर और पालन है, वहाँ प्रभु की आशीष और सुरक्षा भी है। प्रभु यीशु से अपने पापों के लिए क्षमा माँगकर, स्वेच्छा से तथा सच्चे मन से अपने आप को उसकी अधीनता में समर्पित कर दीजिए - उद्धार और स्वर्गीय जीवन का यही एकमात्र मार्ग है। आपको स्वेच्छा और सच्चे मन से प्रभु यीशु मसीह से केवल एक छोटी प्रार्थना करनी है, और साथ ही अपना जीवन उसे पूर्णतः समर्पित करना है। आप यह प्रार्थना और समर्पण कुछ इस प्रकार से भी कर सकते हैं, “प्रभु यीशु मैं आपका धन्यवाद करता हूँ कि आपने मेरे पापों की क्षमा और समाधान के लिए उन पापों को अपने ऊपर लिया, उनके कारण मेरे स्थान पर क्रूस की मृत्यु सही, गाड़े गए, और मेरे उद्धार के लिए आप तीसरे दिन जी भी उठे, और आज जीवित प्रभु परमेश्वर हैं। कृपया मेरे पापों को क्षमा करें, मुझे अपनी शरण में लें, और मुझे अपना शिष्य बना लें। मैं अपना जीवन आप के हाथों में समर्पित करता हूँ।” सच्चे और समर्पित मन से की गई आपकी एक प्रार्थना आपके वर्तमान तथा भविष्य को, इस लोक के और परलोक के जीवन को, अनन्तकाल के लिए स्वर्गीय एवं आशीषित बना देगी।

The Lord’s Table - Participating Worthily

        In the previous article, we have seen from 1 Corinthians 11:27 that to participate in the Lord’s Table in an unworthy manner means to participate in it in a manner different from what the Lord has given while instituting the Table with His disciples at the time of the Passover. We have seen in the earlier articles that God has always been very particular about the things He has said and asked to be done, especially in relation to His honor and worship. God has never permitted or accepted any deviation or modification or anyone’s personal interpretation of His directions and commandments. The same stands for the Holy Communion too. The Lord Jesus established the Communion for His committed disciples, those who had continued with Him in His trials (Luke 22:28). He instructed only them about participating in it; Judas Iscariot did not participate in the Holy Communion established by the Lord. Therefore, we can learn that partaking in the Lord’s Table is only for the committed people of God, who are willing to take a stand for Him; and not for everyone who ritualistically, or for any selfish reasons remains associated and attached with the Lord.

        We have also seen that in their remaining with the Lord instead of going to their individual families to celebrate the Passover, and preparing for the Passover in accordance with the instructions of the Lord, they had shown a level of commitment and obedience to the Lord; which is something not often seen amongst the people who partake of the Communion ritualistically nowadays. But this does not mean that they were perfect and above reproach, even while sitting and eating the Passover meal, there was a dispute amongst them about who among them was the greatest (Luke 22:24-27). Probably it was because of this that the Lord got up from the meal and washed the disciple’s feet, as is recorded in John 13:4-17, including Judas Iscariot’s, since he was present for the Passover meal, and went out only after taking the ‘sop’ (John 13:30). The Lord instituted the Holy Communion after his going out, as we have seen earlier. The Lord also knew what the disciples would be doing shortly. Despite all their claims to the contrary, they would neither stay up with Him to pray, nor stand with Him when people came to arrest Him, but will leave Him alone and run away. But the Lord also knew that they would not permanently abandon Him and go back to their families and professions after His death. They will be penitent after this, and after His resurrection once their commitment to Him is renewed, they will be the ones who will go into the world and spread the Gospel at any cost. He knew what their repentance and re-commitment would accomplish in the days to come.

Therefore, to think and believe that only absolutely perfect and totally sinless people can participate in the Lord’s Table, is a misunderstanding and misinterpretation of facts. The Lord’s instituting the Table with His fallible and errant disciples does not support such a thinking. The Lord also knows that no man can ever be perfect and sinless; everyone, including His committed disciples will sin, will repent, will need forgiveness (1 John 1:7-10). So those who participate in the Table should be the ones who are willing to accept their sins and short-comings before the Lord and ask His forgiveness for them; they should be willing to stay with Him, be obedient to Him, and trust Him even in their imperfections and with their limitations. What the Lord does not like or accept is arrogance, self-righteousness, and contrived religiosity. We will see more about this and participating in the Lord’s Table as we study the coming verses in the subsequent articles.

        We have already seen about the other things related to worthily participating in the Table – about partaking the Holy Communion in remembrance of the life and purpose of the Lord’s coming to earth, of being His witnesses and proclaiming His death and resurrection, and using the bread and cup in a symbolic manner. In the next article we will see the Lord given mechanism through which the imperfect, errant, and prone to sinning disciples of the Lord, in obedience to the Lord, can still participate worthily, or in the correct manner in the Lord’s Table, without inviting judgment upon themselves.

        If you are a Christian Believer and have been participating in the Lord’s Table, then please examine your life and make sure that you are actually a disciple of the Lord, i.e., are redeemed from your sins, have submitted and surrendered your life to the Lord Jesus to live in obedience to Him and His Word. You should also always, like the Berean Believers, first check and test all teachings that you receive from the Word of God, and only after ascertaining the truth and veracity of the teachings brought to you by men, should you accept and obey them (Acts 17:11; 1 Thessalonians 5:21). If you do not do this, the false apostles and prophets sent by Satan as ministers of Christ (2 Corinthians 11:13-15), will by their trickery, cunningness, and craftiness render you ineffective for the Lord and cause severe damage to your Christian life and your rewards.
