Teachings Related to the Gospel – 10

In considering the changed life, one of the evidences of true heartfelt repentance, we have seen that this voluntarily implemented change in life and behavior of the repentant person must be evident through his actions. It must reflect the renewing of the mind brought about within him by God, and should glorify God. For a Christian Believer who has chosen to fully surrender himself to the Lord voluntarily, live in obedience to Him and His Word, and to glorify God through his life and behavior, God has kept three very great blessings for his stepping out in faith to do God’s bidding. Firstly, God wants to live and be with him like a loving Father. Secondly, God wants to make him complete and thoroughly prepared for every good work; make him mature so that he cannot be deceived by the trickeries of men. Thirdly, God wants to bring him into the form and image of His Son, the Lord Jesus Christ. Today we will look at the first of these blessings.

The first blessing and desire of God is to live with the surrendered and obedient Believers as a Father. In 2 Corinthians 6:14-18 a series of changes that the Christian Believers should implement in their lives is given, and the net result of implementing these changes is God living with such Believers as their Father; “Do not be unequally yoked together with unbelievers. For what fellowship has righteousness with lawlessness? And what communion has light with darkness? And what accord has Christ with Belial? Or what part has a believer with an unbeliever? And what agreement has the temple of God with idols? For you are the temple of the living God. As God has said: "I will dwell in them And walk among them. I will be their God, And they shall be My people." Therefore "Come out from among them And be separate, says the Lord. Do not touch what is unclean, And I will receive you." "I will be a Father to you, And you shall be My sons and daughters, Says the Lord Almighty."” On the basis of this assurance from God, Paul then exhorts, “Therefore, having these promises, beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God” (2 Corinthians 7:1).

There are two things evident from this passage. Firstly, this passage clearly puts an end to a popular but unBiblical notion, that a Christian Believer can compromise on things of the Christian faith, so as to be able to mingle and live with the world, to maintain civil and cordial relations with the world. Nowhere does the Bible speak of having animosity or antagonism towards the unbelievers; we can always be civil and cordial with the unbelievers without compromising on our faith to please the unbelievers. In the above passage, the Holy Spirit, through Paul here repeatedly asks the rhetorical question, on what grounds can Believers have such close relationships with unbelievers, that bring up the possibility of compromising in faith? He exhorts the Believers to live according to the change brought by God in their lives; separate out and not compromise with the world and the people of the world in any manner. Peter had said the same thing in his first sermon, on the day of Pentecost (Acts 2:40).

Secondly, once again, we see from Paul’s exhortation in 2 Corinthians 7:1, that it is the Christian Believer who has to come to the realization of what God has done in him and for him. Then, he has to accordingly take the initiative and implement the changes that God wants done in his life. But God does not coerce or compel the Believer for carrying them out. God tells him what He wants from him and in his life, and also tells him the benefits he will get by obeying God, living according to God’s desire and instructions; and then waits for the Believer to step up, and start implementing the changes. God’s Holy Spirit is already in the Believer to help and guide him right through this process, from the moment the Believer decides to go through this process, however difficult, or daunting, or costly it may appear. When the Believer obeys, takes the initial step to carry out the required changes, God is ready and waiting with the rewards that literally are ‘out of this world.’ A fitting symbolic example of this is found in the Old Testament in Joshua chapter 3, where God commands Joshua to lead the Israelites on foot across the Jordan River during its flood stage. In Joshua 3:15–17, we see that as soon as the feet of the priests carrying the Ark of the Covenant—who were walking ahead of the people—touched the edge of the river’s waters, the water stopped flowing from far upstream, and the Israelites crossed over on dry ground. God was already prepared; the moment the Israelites stepped out in obedience despite what seemed like an impossible situation, God performed His miracle and made the impossible possible.

Imagine having a continual, 24 X 7 unhindered, readily available, unending access to God, being able to freely converse with Him for anything and everything on our heart and in our lives, while He, as a doting benevolent Father, patiently listens to all of whatever we have to say, and then makes the necessary arrangements and provisions for all that we have shared with Him. Wouldn’t the access to this heavenly privilege here on earth, be unimaginably more worthwhile than the things of this world that God desires His children to get away from?

Just consider, in return for obeying Him and glorifying Him through our changed life, how much He has kept available for us; and this is just part one, there are two other blessings that we will consider in the next articles.

If you have not yet accepted the discipleship of the Lord, make your decision in favor of the Lord Jesus now to ensure your eternal life and heavenly blessings. Where there is obedience to the Lord, where there is respect and obedience to His Word, there is also the blessing and protection of the Lord. Voluntarily repent of your sins and ask the Lord Jesus for forgiveness of your sins, voluntarily and sincerely surrender yourself to Him - this is the only way to salvation and heavenly life. You only have to say a short but sincere prayer to the Lord Jesus Christ willingly and with a penitent heart, and at the same time completely commit and submit your life to Him. You can also make this prayer and submission in words something like, “Lord Jesus, I am sorry for my sins and repent of them. I thank you for taking my sins upon yourself, paying for them through your life.  Because of them you died on the cross in my place, were buried, and you rose again from the grave on the third day for my salvation, and today you are the living Lord God and have freely provided to me the forgiveness, and redemption from my sins, through faith in you. Please forgive my sins, take me under your care, and make me your disciple. I submit my life into your hands." Your one prayer from a sincere and committed heart will make your present and future life, in this world and in the hereafter, heavenly and blessed for eternity.

Teachings Related to the Gospel – 9

While considering Biblical teachings related to the gospel, we have seen that its two essential components are the teachings related to repentance from sins, and to believing in the gospel. True heartfelt repentance is evidenced by a change in the life and behavior of the person who repents, along with his developing a lasting and growing interest in studying God’s Word, and sharing the necessity of repentance from sins with others. We have considered some aspects of the change that comes in a repentant person, and have learnt that though it is God who necessarily wants to see the change happening, but the repentant person has to take the initiative in beginning the change in his life.

We have seen from Romans 12:1-2 that the Believer must come to God, voluntarily offer himself as a “living sacrifice” to God. When a person does that, God renews his mind, opens it to enable it to see, understand, and obey His Word and its truths, through the help of the Holy Spirit residing in every Believer from the moment of his salvation. The person has to now show his renewed mind through bringing about the related necessary changes in his life, and continually strive to live a life that glorifies God. In the last article we stopped at the point that many feel reluctant to do this, and are often very slow in implementing the necessary changes. This is because their unstated or unexpressed thoughts are that while they go through the rigorous efforts and exercise of changing their lives and giving up on things and pleasures of this world, it is God who gets all the glory; and apparently there is nothing in this whole exercise for them. Today we will look at what God has in store for the person who is serious in implementing the changes in his life and glorifying God through his changed life.

There is a commonly stated attribute of God, “God is no one’s debtor;” which although is not written in God’s Word, yet is quite evident from all that God does for His people. One good illustration of this is Mark 10:28-31; i.e., the Lord Jesus’s reply to Peter, when he asked him about what will they get in return for their having left everything for following Him “Then Peter began to say to Him, "See, we have left all and followed You." So, Jesus answered and said, "Assuredly, I say to you, there is no one who has left house or brothers or sisters or father or mother or wife or children or lands, for My sake and the gospel's, who shall not receive a hundredfold now in this time--houses and brothers and sisters and mothers and children and lands, with persecutions--and in the age to come, eternal life. But many who are first will be last, and the last first."” The Lord’s answer here, of a hundredfold here, now on earth, and eternal life in the time to come, should set at rest the troubled minds of those who think that they are making all the efforts and sacrifices, but all the glory is being given to God, and they are being left without anything.

But what God has in mind for those who glorify Him through their complete submission and unquestioning obedience to Him and His Word is something far greater, something that man can never imagine to achieve through any of his efforts. There are three components to what God has in mind for those who trust Him and step out in faith, to do God’s bidding. Firstly, God wants to live and be with them like a loving Father. Secondly, God wants to make this person complete and thoroughly prepared for every good work; make him mature so that he cannot be deceived by the trickery of men. Thirdly, God wants to conform them into the image of His Son, the Lord Jesus Christ.

We will start considering these three blessings one by one, along with their relevant Biblical references, from the next article.

Teachings Related to the Gospel – 8

So far in this series, we have seen that for their spiritual growth and maturity, the Christian Believers, and the Church, must be well versed in the Bible. Of the essential Biblical teachings that they should learn, know, and pass on to others, one category of teachings are the teachings related to the gospel; i.e., learning what the gospel actually is, according to the Bible; and the teachings related to repentance and believing in the gospel. Repentance exhibited by a person can be both true and heartfelt, or false just something meant to show to the world. The differentiating features between true and false repentance are the change in life that accompanies true repentance, along with the person developing and continuing in love for God’s Word, and having a desire to bring others into true repentance as well; these things are not seen with false repentance. In the recent articles we have been considering the various aspects of the change that happens in a person’s life on truly repenting; and in the last article we had seen about this from Romans 12:1-2. Today, we will see the necessity of this change, i.e., why does God so resolutely want to see this change happen in the lives of those who repent and believe in the gospel.

We have seen in the last article that this change has to come voluntarily, the repentant person has to voluntarily offer himself as a “living sacrifice” to the Lord. When he does this, God renews his mind; and then again it is the person's responsibility to demonstrate this renewal of the mind, through a changed life and behavior. The Holy Spirit of God residing in every Born-Again Believer helps and guides him in this; provided the person continues to obey the Holy Spirit, instead of the lusts of the flesh and the world (Galatians 5:16-25; Ephesians 4:22-24). As Paul says through the Holy Spirit in 2 Corinthians 5:14-17, from God’s perspective, every Born-Again person is not merely a dusted, cleaned, and brushed-up version of his former self. He is not just repaired, trimmed, dented, painted, and polished to look new. But all the old things have passed away and he is an altogether new creation of God; and this newness has to be made evident. God has done this with a purpose – so that this Born-Again person should no longer live for himself, but live for his redeemer. Once again, we see that this desire, this change of having a desire of living for His redeemer, has to begin, has to come from the repentant person himself। God does want to see it happen, but the person has to initiate it.

There are two reasons why God wants to see this change in the person. The first, the one many are familiar with is, because it glorifies God – it must be the Believer’s purpose in life to glorify God through his life. Paul emphasized this in his first letter to the Corinthians, when he wrote, "Or do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and you are not your own? For you were bought at a price; therefore, glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God's" (1 Corinthians 6:19-20). And most Believers think this is all that there is to it – they are to live a changed life, so that God may be glorified. And though often unexpressed, it does not seem to be a very appealing proposition to many – that they should radically change, they undergo this process of change, they give up on so many things, but at the end not they, but God gets all the glory! It dampens the enthusiasm for change in many, because they feel that there should have been something in it for them also. And so, it is not uncommon to see a reluctance in stepping up to start the process of change, and a tardiness in progressing through the change. Had they been aware of and understood the second reason of the necessity for this change that God wants to see in a Christian Believer’s life, their whole attitude towards the change would have been quite different.

We will consider this second reason in the next article.

Teachings Related to the Gospel – 7

We are considering teachings related to the gospel that are to be learnt and taught for the spiritual growth of the Believers and the Church. We have seen that repentance and faith in the gospel are essential for the gospel to be effective (Hebrews 4:2). Through the examples of King Josiah, Job, Paul, the devout Jews, etc. we learnt some characteristics of true heart-felt repentance, and how to recognize it in a person’s life. We have seen that a major characteristic of true repentance is the evidently changed life of the penitent person; today we will consider some aspects of this change that repentance brings about.

The Apostle Paul, writing to the Christian Believers in Rome speaks to them of two things that are a necessary aspect of this change that is expected in the Believer’s life. Paul says “I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service. And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God” (Romans 12:1-2). The manner of Paul’s writing this passage, his beseeching them on the basis of God’s mercies, and calling it their ‘reasonable service’ indicate that these changes do not happen automatically, they have to be brought about. Though they are essential for the Christian life of the Believer, yet like many other things associated with Christian living, they are things that the Believer has to actively develop or cultivate in his life.

The first thing mentioned here is consecration and complete surrender to God, while simultaneously disassociating themselves from the world and the things of the world. To convey this message, Paul is here using the example of the sacrifices offered under the Law to God. Just as the sacrificial animal that had been chosen, prepared, offered and sacrificed on the altar never went back into the same state it had been brought from, similarly the person who submits himself to the Lord must not go back into the same worldly state that he came out of. Paul here uses an apparently self-contradictory term ‘living sacrifice,’ i.e., dead in one sense, yet alive in another – dead to one, accepted and living to another. This presents to us a characteristic of the change that ought to happen in a person on his accepting the gospel and repentance.

Although, from the moment of accepting the gift of salvation through repenting and believing in the gospel, the person becomes fully consecrated, fully submitted to God, wholly belonging to God; yet, the Holy Spirit had Paul write to the Believers that ‘you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God,’ i.e., God also wants that the Believer does this as a voluntary act and not as a compulsion. In other words, this change comes with the voluntary active participation of the Believer in the process of change; not as a coercion or imposition by God. Paul also reminds the Believer their doing this is not something exceptional or something great; rather, in comparison to what God has done and is doing for them, the Believer’s surrendering and submitting to Him is a ’reasonable service,’ merely a rational reaction on their part towards God. Everyone who truly repents and sincerely accepts the gospel should also live with the realization that he now belongs to the Lord, is consecrated to Him, and must live a life that demonstrates this consecration and submission (2 Corinthians 5:15, 17).

The second thing that Paul says to the Roman Believers is that the internal change wrought in their minds by their repentance and acceptance of the gospel, should be seen externally by a transformation in their life. In other words, with their repentance and submission, God renews their minds – that which controls their bodies, brings it in conformity to their heavenly calling and responsibility. Now they have the responsibility to demonstrate their internally renewed mind, by external physical works; i.e., not by mere verbal assertions, but by their works. Generally speaking this becomes evident by their no longer conforming to the ways of the world, but by determining and bringing their bodies under the control of their renewed mind. Instead of their bodies, under the influence of worldly lusts and desires, controlling their minds, their spiritually renewed minds must control their bodies towards the right direction.

We will look at some more aspects of this changed life in the next article.
