The Elementary Principles – 56

Laying on of Hands - 4

To study and see the meanings of the phrase “laying of hands,” or “laying on of hands” which is the fourth elementary principle mentioned in Hebrews 6:1-2, we are looking at the various instances of this phrase being used in the English NKJV Bible. So far, we have seen three different ways this phrase has been used – with intention of causing harm, for transferring sins on to the sacrificial animal, i.e., for transferring and taking up responsibility, and to ordain or commission for some God assigned responsibility. This clearly shows that the use of this phrase in God’s word is not confined to the understanding of “laying of hands” practiced by some sects and denominations once someone has accepted the Lord and has been baptized; there are other and equally valid meanings and uses of this phrase in the Bible. Today we will see how this phrase has been used in four different ways in the book of Job.

The first use of this phrase is in Job 1:12 “And the Lord said to Satan, "Behold, all that he has is in your power; only do not lay a hand on his person." So Satan went out from the presence of the Lord.” From this usage it is apparent that it is about God forbidding Satan from causing physical harm to Job. Since we have already seen about this usage, we will not consider it any further.

The second use of this phrase is in Job 9:33 “Nor is there any mediator between us, Who may lay his hand on us both.” Here Job is speaking about his innocence, and his desire of being able to approach God to lay his case before Him and plead with Him. Job finds himself unable to approach God and plead before Him, since there is no one to mediate for him and plead his case before God. It is quite ironical to note that despite all his righteousness through works, spoken for him in Job 1 and 2, when it came to approaching and pleading before God, Job found himself helpless; all his piety, righteousness and pleadings of innocence were of no help to him for this. The phrase here indicates someone who can sympathetically treat Job, help him in appealing to God, and vindicate him before God. For the Christian Believers today, this function is being carried out by the Lord Jesus (Romans 8:34; 1 Timothy 2:5; Hebrews 7:25; 1 John 2:1-2), and therefore we can approach God at any time, for anything, being the children of God and part of His family (John 1:12-13). So, we can understand the fourth meaning of this phrase is to be sympathetic and helpful.

The third use of the phrase is in Job 40:4 “Behold, I am vile; What shall I answer You? I lay my hand over my mouth.” The phrase here clearly is about saying no more, stopping one-self from speaking. Job, throughout this book, up to this point was justifying himself and pleading his innocence. But now, once God confronts him, Job immediately realizes and acknowledges his actual state, and decides to stop speaking altogether. God’s word cautions to be very circumspect before God, and limit our words, altogether avoiding vain expressions before Him (Proverbs 10:19; Ecclesiastes 5:1-7; Matthew 6:7-8). Therefore, the fifth meaning of this phrase is to put an ongoing process to an end.

The fourth use of this phrase is in Job 41:8 “Lay your hand on him; Remember the battle-- Never do it again!” Here God is speaking about a giant and ferocious creature, “Leviathan” (see from Job 41:1 onwards). In this particular verse, God is reminding Job how dangerous and foolish it is to even attempt to even lay a hand i.e., even to touch Leviathan and cautions him never to do it again; from the sentence it seems that Job or someone else had tried doing this at some time, and the Leviathan had reacted quite violently to it. So, the sixth meaning of this phrase in God’s Word is simply to touch by placing one’s hand on another.

We will continue our study on the use of this phrase, as it occurs in different senses in the English NKJV Bible in the next article.

If you have not yet accepted the discipleship of the Lord, make your decision in favor of the Lord Jesus now to ensure your eternal life and heavenly blessings. Where there is obedience to the Lord, where there is respect and obedience to His Word, there is also the blessing and protection of the Lord. Repenting of your sins, and asking the Lord Jesus for forgiveness of your sins, voluntarily and sincerely, surrendering yourself to Him - is the only way to salvation and heavenly life. You only have to say a short but sincere prayer to the Lord Jesus Christ willingly and with a penitent heart, and at the same time completely commit and submit your life to Him. You can also make this prayer and submission in words something like, “Lord Jesus, I am sorry for my sins and repent of them. I thank you for taking my sins upon yourself, paying for them through your life.  Because of them you died on the cross in my place, were buried, and you rose again from the grave on the third day for my salvation, and today you are the living Lord God and have freely provided to me the forgiveness, and redemption from my sins, through faith in you. Please forgive my sins, take me under your care, and make me your disciple. I submit my life into your hands." Your one prayer from a sincere and committed heart will make your present and future life, in this world and in the hereafter, heavenly and blessed for eternity.

आरम्भिक बातें – 55

हाथ रखना – 3

    हम इब्रानियों 6:1-2 में दी गई छः में से चौथी आरम्भिक बात, “हाथ रखने” का अध्ययन कर रहे हैं। इस अध्ययन के लिए हम अंग्रेजी के NKJV अनुवाद में वाक्यांश “laying of hands,” या “laying on of hands” के उपयोग किए जाने के अनुसार आगे बढ़ रहे हैं।

The Elementary Principles – 55

Laying on of Hands - 3

We are studying the fourth of the six elementary principles given in Hebrews 6:1-2, i.e., “laying of hands” as this phrase occurs in the English NKJV translation of the Bible. There is a general perception amongst Christians that the phrase “laying of hands,” or “laying on of hands” is to be used in one particular sense, that of the Elders of the Church laying on of hands on the newly baptized Believers, as is practiced in some sects and denominations. But as we trace the occurrence of this phrase in the Bible, we see that it has been used with some different meanings; the proper, applicable meaning is determined by the context and the usage of this phrase. In the preceding two articles on this topic, we have seen that the first use of this phrase “laying of hands,” or “laying on of hands” in the Bible is with the implication of causing harm, which is also seen at many other places, e.g., Nehemiah 13:21 and 8 times in the book of Esther. Then we saw that the second use of this phrase is to convey transferring of sins, or of responsibility on to another, as we saw from the books of Leviticus and Numbers. Today we will see a third usage of this phrase that of ordaining or commissioning someone for a particular mission, service, or ministry.

It is written in Numbers 27:18 “And the Lord said to Moses: "Take Joshua the son of Nun with you, a man in whom is the Spirit, and lay your hand on him;” in Numbers 27:23 “And he laid his hands on him and inaugurated him, just as the Lord commanded by the hand of Moses” and in Deuteronomy 34:9 “Now Joshua the son of Nun was full of the spirit of wisdom, for Moses had laid his hands on him; so the children of Israel heeded him, and did as the Lord had commanded Moses.” These three references are about Moses, under God’s direction, ordaining Joshua to be the next leader of Israel after Moses; and the people of Israel subjecting themselves to the leadership of Joshua after Moses had finished his time on earth. Moses was instructed by God to ordain Joshua as the next leader of Israel by laying of hands (Numbers 27:18); Moses did this ordination of Joshua in this manner (Numbers 27:23); and the people of Israel accepted Joshua as their God ordained leader without any contentions, and listened to him; moreover, Joshua was filled with the Spirit of Wisdom because he had been ordained in the God given manner (Deuteronomy 34:9).

This is the first occurrence in the Bible of ordination of a person by the laying on of hands, under God’s instructions. But this is not the only manner in which God had the leaders of His people ordained; later on, we see that God asked Samuel to ordain Saul to be King by pouring oil on him (1 Samuel 10:1); similarly, David to be King by pouring oil on him (1 Samuel 16:1, 13); Jehu to be King by pouring oil on him (2 Kings 9:2-3), etc.

In the New Testament also we see people being ordained or commissioned for some responsibilities or for being sent on some mission by laying of hands on them. It says in Acts 6:3-6 “Therefore, brethren, seek out from among you seven men of good reputation, full of the Holy Spirit and wisdom, whom we may appoint over this business; but we will give ourselves continually to prayer and to the ministry of the word. And the saying pleased the whole multitude. And they chose Stephen, a man full of faith and the Holy Spirit, and Philip, Prochorus, Nicanor, Timon, Parmenas, and Nicolas, a proselyte from Antioch, whom they set before the apostles; and when they had prayed, they laid hands on them;” in Acts 13:3 “Then, having fasted and prayed, and laid hands on them, they sent them away;” and in 1 Timothy 4:14 “Do not neglect the gift that is in you, which was given to you by prophecy with the laying on of the hands of the eldership.” Acts 6:3-6 is about seven men being appointed by the elders in Jerusalem to look after the day-to-day functioning and care of the growing Church in Jerusalem; and the Apostles in Jerusalem ordained seven men for this service by praying and laying hands on them. Then, Acts 13:3 (see verses 2 to 4) is about the Holy Spirit calling Paul (then known as Saul), and Barnabas for being sent out for gospel ministry. And 1 Timothy 4:14 is Paul reminding Timothy of his being consecrated and ordained for ministry by the laying of hands by the elders; and therefore, he should be diligent about this responsibility that has been entrusted to him.

So, here we see from the Word of God the third sense in which this phrase “laying of hands,” or “laying on of hands” has been used – to ordain or commission for some God assigned responsibility. We will continue our study on the use of this phrase, as it occurs in different senses in the English NKJV Bible.

The Elementary Principles – 54

Laying on of Hands - 2

In our study of the six elementary principles stated in Hebrews 6:1-2, since the last article we have started studying the fourth one, i.e., “laying on of hands,” and we are studying it through its usage in the NKJV English Bible. In the last article we have seen that the phrase “laying of hands,” or “laying on of hands” has been used with different meanings at different places in the Bible, and the context as well as the use of this phrase determines the relevant and applicable meaning of the phrase in that passage or verse. One particular meaning of this phrase cannot always be taken as the universally applicable meaning throughout the Bible. We had seen in the last article that the first four times this phrase has been used in the Bible, in the books of Genesis and Exodus, it has been used to convey the intention of causing harm.

The next occurrence of this phrase is in the books of Leviticus (10 times) and Numbers (3 times). In the book of Leviticus (Leviticus 3:2, 8, 13; 4:4, 15, 24, 29, 33; 16:21; 24:14), and the first two instances in the book of Numbers (Numbers 8:10, 12), the use of this phrase has been to denote the transfer of sins from the people to the sacrificial animal (Leviticus 16:21). From the two pertinent verses in the book of Numbers, we see that the Israelites were to put their hands on the Levites, and then the Levite were to put their hands on the sacrificial animals, denoting the transfer of the sins of Israel to their mediators before God – the Levites; and the Levites in turn transferred the sins on to the sacrificial animal, which were then sacrificed before the Lord God. A similar process was also done at the time of the first ordination of Aaron and his sons to serve as priests for the Lord (Exodus 29:10); and one of the steps of their purification was their transferring their sins on to the sacrificial animal by placing their hands on its head. A sinless animal was used to symbolically put the sins of the people upon it, and then it was sacrificed, i.e., paid with its life for the sins that it was now carrying. This was a symbolic representation of the Lord Jesus taking upon Himself all the sins of mankind and sacrificing His life to atone for them (Hebrews 10:10). The Lord Jesus was both the ‘Levite,’ i.e., the mediator for the people, as well as the sacrificial animal on whom the sins were placed and it was then sacrificed on the Cross of Calvary to pay the penalty of those sins, thereby atoning for all those, whose sins it was carrying. So, in the Bible, the phrase “laying of hands,” or “laying on of hands” also stands for transfer of sins, of handing over and taking over a responsibility to fulfill it even to the point of death (Revelation 2:10).

We will continue our study on the use of this phrase, as it occurs in different senses in the English NKJV Bible.

Growth through God’s Word /

The Elementary Principles – 53

Laying on of Hands - 1

Over three months ago, we had started this Bible Study on a Christian’s and the Church’s growth through learning and obeying God’s Word the Bible. We had seen that it is essential for every Christian Believer to study, learn, and follow the teachings of the whole of God’s Word; no one can pick and choose certain portions and ignore the others. Yet, there are three categories of Bible teachings that every Christian should know, and abide by; because they are foundational and essential for the Christian Faith. Unless one is well versed and firmly established in these three categories of Bible teachings, he will not be able to stand up to the satanic onslaught of false teachings and preaching, so rampant all over the world. Satan keeps spreading false teachings and wrong doctrines in various forms and ways to mislead people into eternal destruction while they falsely believe that they are following the Lord and His Word (2 Corinthians 11:3, 13-15). These three categories of teachings are: first, the teachings that the Lord began His earthly ministry with i.e., those related to repentance and the gospel (Matthew 4:17; Mark 1:15); second, teachings about the six elementary principles given in Hebrews 6:1-2; and third, the teachings about practical Christian living. Of these three categories, we have considered the first category – teachings related to repentance and the gospel. Presently, we are considering the second category of teachings, i.e., about the six elementary principles given in Hebrew 6:1-2; of these six we have seen the first three, and from today we will be starting on the fourth elementary principle – laying on of hands. For this study, we will be following the use of this phrase in the English Bible – the NKJV translation.

Laying on of hands has been mentioned in both the Old as well as the New Testaments, in various contexts, and for different reasons. As is true for all Bible interpretations, it is the context, and the usage in the Bible passage that determines the meaning of this phrase. Every instance of use of the phrase “laying of hands,” or “laying on of hands” does not always mean the same thing. Therefore, we cannot assume and accept only one meaning of the phrase to always be applicable or always be the only meaning, ignore the rest, and insist that the phrase “laying of hands,” or “laying on of hands” only means one thing. This is important to know and realize, since some Christian sects and denominations usually associate the phrase “laying of hands,” or “laying on of hands” with baptism, and to them the process of baptizing someone is incomplete, until the Elders of the Church have laid hands upon the baptized and prayed over them. Therefore, for the followers of these sects and denominations, the phrase “laying of hands,” or “laying on of hands” means only this one thing But Biblically speaking, though this is one of the meanings, and is true; but it is not the only and always applicable meaning.

Let us begin by seeing when, where, and how this phrase has been used in God’s Word the Bible. The first two instances of the use of this phrase, “laying of hands,” or “laying on of hands,” occurs in Genesis in the English Bibles, and then, in the same sense, it is also used twice in the book of Exodus. In these four initial instances, it is used in an entirely different sense than the one we see associated with “laying of hands,” or “laying on of hands” after baptism. Let us look at the Bible verses where this phrase occurs: it says in Genesis 22:12 “And He said, "Do not lay your hand on the lad, or do anything to him; for now I know that you fear God, since you have not withheld your son, your only son, from Me"” then in Genesis 37:22 “And Reuben said to them, "Shed no blood, but cast him into this pit which is in the wilderness, and do not lay a hand on him"--that he might deliver him out of their hands, and bring him back to his father” thirdly in Exodus 7:4 “But Pharaoh will not heed you, so that I may lay My hand on Egypt and bring My armies and My people, the children of Israel, out of the land of Egypt by great judgments” and fourthly, in Exodus 24:11, where it says, “But on the nobles of the children of Israel He did not lay His hand. So they saw God, and they ate and drank.”

We see at all four places that the sense of the phrase is related to causing harm; in the first instance, God is forbidding Abraham from sacrificing Issac, as Abraham stretched out his hand with the knife to sacrifice Issac; whereas in the second instance, Jacob’s son Reuben, wanting to protect and save their brother Joseph, asks the other brother to not kill him, but just cast Joseph into a pit, from which Reuben intended to rescue Joseph later on; then in the third instance, God is mentioning His intention of punishing Pharaoh and Egypt for what they have done to God’s people, the Israelites; and for the fourth instance, the context of this verse is God inviting Moses, Aaron, Nadab, Abihu and seventy of the elders of Israel up on the mountain, and they were to worship God from afar, and only Moses was to go near the Lord, while the others were to stay afar; and none of the others from the congregation were to go up (Exodus 24:1-2). In obedience to God Moses, Aaron, Nadab, Abihu and the seventy elders of Israel went up on the mountain, saw God of Israel, and they ate and drank there in His presence (Exodus 24:9-11), but God did not bring them to harm in any way. So, from this initial use of this phrase, “laying of hands,” or “laying on of hands,” in the Bible, we learn the first use of this phrase is in the sense of causing harm to someone. Later too, at other places, this phrase has been used in this same sense in God’s Word.

We will continue our study on the use of this phrase, as it occurs in different senses in the English NKJV Bible.
