Things Related to Christian Living – 47

The Four Pillars of Christian Living - 3 - Breaking of Bread (22)

Administered Only By An Ordained Pastor? (1)

The Holy Communion was established by the Lord Jesus, during the Passover meal He was having with His disciples, before His being caught for crucifixion. We learn about its form and observance from the Gospel accounts; and about the errors and pitfalls in observing it from 1 Corinthians 11:17-34. It is the third of the four things of practical Christian living given in Acts 2:42, that the initial Christian Believers observed steadfastly. From the last article we have started to consider some common questions related to its observance, and seeing what God’s Word says about them. In the previous article we had considered the frequency and time interval between successive participations in the Lord’s Table. Today, we will look into another contentious issue - is the Holy Communion to be administered only by an ordained Pastor? It is important and necessary to look into these and other similar questions from God’s Word, since there are many varying views that have created confusions about them in Christianity. Various denominations, sects, and groups have their own interpretations and rules-regulations about them, which they impose on their congregations through the control of the religious leaders. This has become possible only because of one basic and very gross short-coming amongst the followers of the Lord Jesus - they have lost interest in personally studying God’s Word the Bible, and have substituted it with blindly accepting anything told and taught to them from the pulpit as always being reliable.

But we all need to be aware of, and understand that finally when the end comes and we stand before God to give an account of our lives, none of us will be judged by the rules-regulations of any denomination, group, or sect. Neither will we be judged on the basis of our obedience to our religious leaders and following them. Though they will be accountable for the leading they have done (Ezekiel 34:1-10), but they will not be able to absolve us from any wrongs we have done because of trusting and obeying them. We will all be judged by the Lord Jesus, solely on the basis of His Word, and our obedience to it (John 12:48; Acts 17:30-31; 2 Corinthians 5:10). None will be able to claim any leniency or exemption on the grounds of not knowing God’s Word, because to every Born-Again Christian Believer, God has given His Holy Spirit to indwell in him; and one of the functions of the Holy Spirit is to teach God’s Word to God’s children (John 14:26), provided they are willing to spend time and learn from Him. Hence it is necessary for each and every Christian Believer to personally study and learn God’s Word, and obey it rather than vainly obey the contrived doctrines of men that will only lead to destruction (Matthew 15:7-9, 13-14). That is why Paul makes a categorical statement in his letter to the Galatians, “For do I now persuade men, or God? Or do I seek to please men? For if I still pleased men, I would not be a bondservant of Christ” (Galatians 1:10), and we would do well to not only pay heed to it, but also apply it in our own lives.

Coming to our question for today, it is a general feeling and understanding amongst most Christians, especially those from denominational or traditional Churches, that the Holy Communion can only be administered by an ordained Pastor. But Biblically speaking, there is no support, none whatsoever, stated or implied, for this misunderstanding. One of the reasons for this misunderstanding is that the Holy Communion has been ascribed meanings and purposes, which never were a part of it, since its inception; and secondly, because the religious leadership has used this misunderstanding to maintain their domination and control in the Church.

In our study we have seen that the Lord Jesus established the Holy Communion with His disciples - all, ordinary people, from common walks of life and even uneducated (Acts 4:13); none had any religious education or degree, and none was ever a part of any formal religious activities before becoming the Lord’s disciple, and His Apostle for the world. To them the Lord entrusted making other disciples and teaching them what He had taught them (Matthew 28:18-20), never making it necessary that any of them go for any formal religious training or education. The only education and training the Lord’s disciples had in the first Church was that which was common for everyone, done in their gathering together in the name of the Lord (Acts 2:42).

Nowhere in the Bible has it ever been stated or even indicated that the Christian sacraments, of which the Holy Communion is one, can only be rightfully administered by a formally educated and ordained Pastor, else it will be vain and unacceptable. This is a man-made rule and tradition, and can in no way supersede God’s Word or authority. If this contrived doctrine were to be true, if it were to accepted, then what of all those countless Believers through the earlier centuries, who all over the world participated in the Holy Communion, and in other sacraments administered through other Christian Believers, before these formally educated and ordained pastors came around and took over the management of the Lord’s Church, and started administering them? Will God consider their partaking as unacceptable and inconsequential? Or, if God will accept and bless their participation administered through another committed Christian Believer, then why will He not do the same for His children today? We will look further into this issue in the next article.

If you have not yet accepted the discipleship of the Lord, make your decision in favor of the Lord Jesus now to ensure your eternal life and heavenly blessings. Where there is obedience to the Lord, where there is respect and obedience to His Word, there is also the blessing and protection of the Lord. Repenting of your sins, and asking the Lord Jesus for forgiveness of your sins, voluntarily and sincerely, surrendering yourself to Him - is the only way to salvation and heavenly life. You only have to say a short but sincere prayer to the Lord Jesus Christ willingly and with a penitent heart, and at the same time completely commit and submit your life to Him. You can also make this prayer and submission in words something like, “Lord Jesus, I am sorry for my sins and repent of them. I thank you for taking my sins upon yourself, paying for them through your life.  Because of them you died on the cross in my place, were buried, and you rose again from the grave on the third day for my salvation, and today you are the living Lord God and have freely provided to me the forgiveness, and redemption from my sins, through faith in you. Please forgive my sins, take me under your care, and make me your disciple. I submit my life into your hands." Your one prayer from a sincere and committed heart will make your present and future life, in this world and in the hereafter, heavenly and blessed for eternity.

The Four Pillars of Christian Living - 3 - Breaking of Bread (21)

Some Related Questions - Part (1)

We have studied about the Holy Communion, or the Lord’s Table mainly from 1 Corinthians 11:17-34. The Holy Spirit had this section written by the Apostle Paul to clarify, explain, and to correct the misconceptions of the Christian Believers about participating in the Holy Communion. By making it a part of God’s Word, it has also been made applicable to the worldwide universal Church of the Lord. From all that we have learnt about the Holy Communion, the overall conclusion is that the Holy Communion is not meant to make anyone acceptable to God, to be made holy, and worthy of entering heaven. But participating in it is meant only for those who already are the people of God. They have not become God’s people through any man-made rituals and processes. But it is God who has made them His people as per His criteria (John 1:12-13; Romans 19:9-10), through His own process, and not in man’s or institution’s but in God’s eyes. God’s people have to participate in the Holy Communion not only in obedience and reverence to Him, but also in the manner prescribed by Him, and with the purpose established by Him. It cannot be partaken in perfunctorily, as a ritual. To partake of it as ritual or to fulfill a formality, is to partake unworthily, or in an inappropriate manner. and the participants expect or claim any benefits from it. God’s children have to first examine themselves according to the teachings and instructions in God’s Word, and only then worthily participate in the Communion. Those who participate in the Lord’s Table inappropriately or unworthily, have been warned in God’s Word that God will judge them, punish and chastise them for doing so.

Since Satan has subtly brought in many false practices, misinterpretations, and misunderstandings about everything related to God and His instructions, including for the Lord’s Table, therefore, there are some related questions that too need to be looked into and clarified from God’s Word.

How Often?

One such issue is about the frequency of the Holy Communion; i.e., how often are the Christian Believers to participate in it? When attempting to seek answers to this question it is very important to keep the mind focussed on the God given purpose of participating in the Lord’s Table - in remembrance of the Lord, His sacrifice, His return, and the proclamation of His death; and that the participant participate worthily, i.e., having diligently examined himself and confessed and repented of his sins to the Lord, asked his forgiveness for them, and having received the forgiveness. Therefore, the time interval between successive participations has to be such that it can readily be recalled and reviewed by the participant to examine the manner he has spent his life, in his works, behavior, and thoughts, in that time duration. If it is too long a time period, then there is always the strong likelihood of his forgetting or missing out things, and overlooking any errors or wrongs that may have been committed. In such a case, he inadvertently will be participating with unconfessed sins and wrongs - with the forbidden leaven of sin hidden in his life.

We have already seen that the Lord Jesus established the Holy Communion while having the Passover meal with His disciples, soon before His being caught and taken for crucifixion. The next mention of the Holy Communion is in Acts 2:42. The preaching of Peter with the power of the Holy Spirit led about 3000 devout Jews to repentance and they accepted the Lord Jesus as their savior. For them, it is written in Acts 2:41, that they were added to the Lord’s disciples. Then, in the next verse, in 2:42, are given the four things in which “they,” i.e., the Lord’s disciples, old and new, “continued steadfastly.” Of these four things, the third one is “breaking of bread”, i.e., partaking of the Holy Communion. Here in verse 42, the frequency of their doing so is not mentioned, all that is written is that they “continued steadfastly” in it, along with the other three things. But a little down in verse 46 we have it mentioned that the disciples met on a daily basis in the temple, and they were also “breaking bread” from house to house. So, it can safely be accepted that as often as they met, which appears to be done daily, for learning the Apostle's Doctrine, i.e., learning God’s Word, Fellowship, and Prayers, they also had the Lord’s Table. In other words, in the First Church, amongst the disciples of the Lord Jesus, the Holy Communion was a very frequent, if not a daily occurrence; but no frequency of participation was prescribed for the Believers.

Then, in Acts 20:7, we have another indicator; the disciples had started gathering together “to break bread” on the first day of the week, i.e., on Sunday, the day the Lord Jesus had resurrected from the dead (Mark 16:2, 9); from Acts 20:5-6 it seems that this happened in Troas, i.e., in a location of the Gentiles. The Jews ceremonially kept the Sabbath, the seventh day of the week, in accordance with the Law and the Ten Commandments (Exodus 20:8-11). As the Gospel spread amongst the Gentiles and brought fruit amongst them, the disciples of the Lord Jesus started to gather to fellowship together, worship, break bread, pray and learn God’s Word on the resurrection day of the Lord - the first day of the week. This gathering of the disciples on the resurrection day of the Lord, Sunday, the first day of the week, then became an accepted practice of the Church, and the four components, mentioned in Acts 2:42, were regularly observed on that day. In context of our question, participating in the Lord’s Table at least once in a week provided a reasonable time frame for the participant to recall, review and examine his life, between successive participations. But throughout God’s Word, there is no mention, or even any indication of the Holy Communion being kept once a month, on the first Sunday of the month, or according to any other days or frequency - these are all man-made traditions, based on people’s own understanding, reasoning, or convenience.

Even in 1 Corinthians 11 where the Holy Spirit through Paul is correcting and clarifying the misconceptions about the Lord’s Table for the Christian Believers, no frequency or time interval is mentioned. Rather, in verses 25-26 it is written “as often as” the Believers participated; so, what we can understand is that it was an “often” done event, though of an unspecified frequency and time interval - the requirement of gathering once a week on Sundays is not prescribed or ordained here. Therefore, what we can derive from these Biblical facts is that there is no categorically stated or ordained day or time frequency for participating in the Holy Communion. Hence, none can be dogmatic about any time interval or frequency of participation.

Participating once a week in the Holy Communion, while gathering for worship, fellowship, prayers, and learning from God’s Word is not only convenient and reasonable, but also has Biblical support. It allows the participant a convenient time frame of his past days to recall and review his life, and then participate worthily. But this does not mean, nor should it ever be thought that confession and repentance for sins is only to be done on a Sunday or the day of taking part in the Lord’s Table. As and when a person sins, whenever one’s conscience convicts him for any sin, whenever God the Holy Spirit reminds a person about any sin in a person’s life, then and there, at that very moment, sin should be accepted, confessed, repented of and God’s forgiveness for it should be obtained. No one should ever carry on or persist in any unconfessed, unrepented, unforgiven sin. Not specifying a time or frequency provides the freedom that as and when people gather in houses, or a place of worship, for something, and want to have the Holy Communion, there is nothing in God’s Word to prevent them from doing so; so long as it is done with due reverence and obedience to God’s instructions about it, and never casually.

In the next article, we will consider another very important question, “Should the Holy Communion be administered only by an ordained Pastor?”

Things Related to Christian Living – 45

The Four Pillars of Christian Living - 3 - Breaking of Bread (20)

A practically lived out Christian life places a testimony before the world about the Christian faith. It demonstrates the changed life of a Christian Believer, and exhibits a life-style different from that of the world and worldliness. It proves God’s help, power, and security in the life of those Christian Believers who live a life committed and surrendered to God. To live such a practical Christian life, it is necessary to know and obey God’s Word, the Bible. To live a practical Christian life, and to know and understand being blessed by God, in the Bible, Acts 2:42 is a very important verse. In this verse four practical things regarding Christian living have been given, and these are also known as the “Pillars of Christian Living.” Because of steadfastly observing these four things, the initial Christian Believers were continually edified in their spiritual lives; they, despite all adverse circumstances, stood firm and strong in their faith; and the churches continued to grow. In contrast to those initial Christian Believers, are the Christian Believers of Corinth, whose life and behavior was just the opposite. They had turned these four things into a ritual, observed them as a formality, and had altered their form and method of observance as per their own understanding and wisdom. Consequently, their lives had become spoiled and corrupt, their testimony was very negative.

The Holy Spirit had the Apostle Paul write letters to them, to show them their wrongs, and the way to correct them; and by having these included for eternity in His Word, made them necessary to be obeyed by everyone. Today, the Christians are very much in the same condition, as those Corinthians Believers were then. Therefore, the solution that was given for the Corinthian Believers, is also the solution for us today. Presently, we are learning and understanding about them from 1 Corinthians 11:17-34; and are now considering verses 33-34, and will continue with them today as well.

7. Partaking in the Holy Communion - verses 31-34 - (Part 4)

In the previous article we had seen that in verses 33-34, Paul is repeating what he had said about it at the beginning of this topic in verses 20-22, and is explaining to them that participation in the Holy Communion is not having their personal party, and showing it off to everyone. Doing this is participating unworthily, and bringing upon themselves punishment from the Lord. The place to have a personal party is their home. In the Church, participation in the Holy Communion has to be together, along with everyone else. And it is to be in the form and manner given by the Lord, i.e., as “One Bread and One Cup for everyone to partake from.” By doing this everyone affirms mutual love, and also encourages to maintain unity and being of one-mind in the Church. Here, in the middle of verse 34, the warning is repeated once again that those who neglect these instructions, they automatically make themselves guilty of participating unworthily, and therefore of suffering God’s punishment. And, there is only way of escaping from this, do what the Lord has taught, just as He has said it should be done. Adding one’s own understanding and concepts to what the Lord has said and taught, and altering them, is forbidden.

Moreover, while concluding the topic, Paul gives a pointer to something more. To end verse 34, he says, “...And the rest I will set in order when I come.” It is evident from this that in the Church at Corinth, there were some other problems as well, and they too required being corrected. But the things that were most important and necessary for urgent correction, Paul had written those under the guidance of the Holy Spirit, so they would act urgently, come out of their wrongs, and be saved from their harmful consequences.

From this we learn three things:

  • The first is that the Christian living is a life of progressively improving and being edified. The Lord through His servants, lays a foundation in our lives, based on, and through His Word. Everyone has to build his life on that, through the teachings and instructions of God’s Word. Paul has said this to these very Corinthain Believers in this very letter, in 1 Corinthians 3:10. Paul was instrumental in laying the foundation in their lives, but they had to build up their life of faith on that foundation. It is evident that every stage of building up has to be according to a proper plan and done correctly, else the building will not be good. The same process is also applicable to being corrected. When errors and mistakes are shown and the method of correction is told, and it has been implemented, then there will also be a review. If any small or residual wrongs are found, they will also be pointed out for correction and will have to be corrected. Also, besides what has already been pointed out, if anything else is pointed out at a later time, that too has to be accepted and implemented by the congregation.

  • The second is that Pual is not assuring them that if they do whatever has been pointed out, then that will be sufficient. Having done all that has been pointed out, they can sit back and be content. Instead, Paul is making it clear to them that what was written to them in the letter was meant for immediate implementation; when he comes to them, he will set in order the rest of the remaining things. Corrections and improvement are a continual process, we are being changed into the likeness of the Lord bit by bit (2 Corinthians 3:18). And this also makes necessary a continual revaluation, correction, and review.

  • The third is that it is the responsibility of the Church Pastor or Elder that as and when necessary, he should point out the wrongs of the people of the congregation, and have them correct them. Therefore, it is also the responsibility of the people of the congregation that they remain willing and ready to be corrected, and to implement the corrections they are being asked to carry out. Paul wrote to the young Church Elder and minister, Titus, “For this reason I left you in Crete, that you should set in order the things that are lacking, and appoint elders in every city as I commanded you” (Titus 1:5). To fulfill this responsibility, the question was not of age, but of fulfilling the God given responsibility. This in itself is a big topic, and in the earlier articles, where we were looking at Church discipline, we have seen about the responsibilities of the Church Elders, and their carrying them out.

On the basis of these things, the overall conclusion is that a continual process of being evaluated and corrected should be present in the Church. The Elder has to fulfill the responsibility of evaluating and correcting, and the congregation has to fulfill their responsibility of accepting their wrongs shown on the basis of God’s Word and correcting them. If both sides do not fulfill their respective responsibilities, then the situation will only go from bad to worse, as happened in the Church at Corinth.

In the next article we will consider a related question, one that has not been raised or addressed here in 1 Corinthians 11:17-34, but continues to perplex the churches today - when and how often should the Holy Communion be observed?
