 Christian Faith & Discipleship – 3

English Translation

The Initial Christian Believers - 2

In the previous article, we had seen from the historical account given in the Book of Acts of the Bible about the initial establishment of Christian assemblies, and about the life, behavior, and manner of living of the initial Christin Believers. We had seen that the Lord Jesus neither established any religion, nor did He ever ask His disciples to preach and propagate any religion, or to convert people to a religion. The Word of God very clearly shows us that the first call to become the disciples of the Lord Jesus was made to "devout Jews" who were religious, and had gathered in Jerusalem to fulfil religious rites and rituals. On hearing the gospel, those devout Jews realized the vanity of their gathering in Jerusalem to fulfil religious obligations, and wanted to know the correct way instead. Those who accepted the gospel, accepted the Lord Jesus as their savior, they were the Christian Believers; and then they began to steadfastly learn God's Word, be in fellowship, partake in the Holy Communion, and gather for prayer. There is no mention anywhere in the whole of this activity of any religion or of observing any religious rituals. Since there was no name of any religion associated with them, but since the life, behavior, and manner of living of those initial Christian Believers was entirely different from the other people of the world, therefore, they were known as "people of the way." After some time, the people of the world started calling these voluntary disciples of the Lord "Christians." Today we will consider what conclusions and lessons can we learn from these things, i.e., what are the characteristics of the actual disciples of the Lord Jesus, how can we identify them

* Firstly, if a person is truly a Christian Believer, in his life the sincere and diligent observance of the four fundamental characteristics of Acts 2:42 will be seen; he will understand their significance and necessity in his life.

* Secondly, to be a disciple of the Lord implies living a life that witnesses for the Lord and His teachings, so that the people of the community automatically realize that he is different from the others; he lives and walks according to a special ‘way’ as a follower of Christ Jesus.

* Thirdly, as per the definition given in the Bible, only he, who is a committed disciple of the Lord Jesus is a Christian; being the follower of a religion or one who fulfills certain religious rites-rituals-ceremonies and observes certain days and festivals does not make anyone a Christian.

* Fourthly, this is a matter of general knowledge and understanding that no one is ever born as someone’s disciple; rather, the person accepts being someone’s disciple – as an adult, voluntarily, after careful evaluation and examination of the life and teachings of the one whose discipleship is under consideration. Only then does a person accept to become another’s disciple; the same thing is applicable, in just the same manner, in becoming a Christian Believer - a disciple of the Lord Jesus Christ.

As we have already seen in detail in the previous articles, according to the Bible, no one ever becomes a disciple of the Lord Jesus by being born in a particular family or by fulfilling the requirements of a particular religion. Every person has to individually repent of his sins, has to personally accept the Lord Jesus as His savior and Lord, and has to voluntarily submit himself with a sincere and committed heart into discipleship of the Lord Jesus; only then does this become possible in a person’s life. This is what is known as being ‘Born-Again’ or saved, i.e., being born out of the perishing worldly condition, into an imperishable eternal spiritual life as a child of God.

In the next article we will look into and understand the meaning of being a disciple of the Lord Jesus Christ; subsequently, we will start looking in some detail into the characteristics of the disciples of Christ from the Bible. If you are still thinking of yourself as being a Christian, because of being born in a particular family, and having fulfilled the religious rites and rituals prescribed under your religion or denomination since your childhood, then like those ‘devout Jews’ you too need to come out of your misunderstanding of Biblical facts, and start living according to what the Word of God says, instead of what any denominational creed says or teaches.

If you are still not Born Again, have not obtained salvation, have not asked the Lord Jesus for forgiveness for your sins, then you have the opportunity to do so right now. A short prayer said voluntarily with a sincere heart, with heart-felt repentance for your sins, and a fully submissive attitude, “Lord Jesus, I confess that I have disobeyed You, and have knowingly or unknowingly, in mind, in thought, in attitude, and in deeds, committed sins. I believe that you have fully borne the punishment of my sins by your sacrifice on the cross, and have paid the full price of those sins for all eternity. Please forgive my sins, change my heart and mind towards you, and make me your disciple, take me with you." God longs for your company, wants to see you blessed; but to make this possible, is your personal decision. Will you not say this prayer now, while you have the time and opportunity to do so - the decision is yours.

 Christian Faith & Discipleship – 2

English Translation

The Initial Christian Believers - 1

In this new series on Christian Faith and Discipleship, in yesterday’s article we saw about some basic principles related to this topic, from the Word of God. We saw that the Lord Jesus Christ neither started any religion, nor did He ask His disciples to start one in His name; He neither instructed His disciples to preach any religion, nor did He ask them to convert any body’s religion to another. He had only asked His disciples to go into the world and preach the gospel to everyone, make others disciples of the Lord similar to themselves, and those who voluntarily become and decide to live as His disciples, to teach them about Him and baptize them (Matthew 28:18-20). The fifth book of the New Testament, “The Acts of the Apostles” is the historical record of the life and activities of the initial disciples of the Lord Jesus, and of their congregation - the Assemblies of the Christian Believers. It tells us about how the preaching of the gospel began, how it spread amongst the people, what effects it had, and what were the reactions of the people and communities - favorable as well as unfavorable, to it, etc. This record of the establishing, growing and spreading of the initial Believer’s Assemblies shows us many interesting facts about the Christian Faith and Discipleship; some of these are:

* The preaching of the gospel and establishing of the Assemblies could happen only after the Holy Spirit’s descending upon and filling the disciples (Acts 1:8). Meaning, this preaching of the gospel and its effects was not a work done by any man, or through the knowledge, wisdom, and strength or power of any person; it could only be done through the power of God and His guidance; nothing else.

* The very first preaching was done amongst “devout Jews” (Acts 2:5), who had come to Jerusalem from all over the world, to fulfill religious obligations and rituals. Those devout Jews heard about the gospel of forgiveness of sins and salvation by the Lord Jesus Christ, then they were “cut to the heart” and they wanted to know from the disciples of the Lord, the remedy for their condition. Then Peter asked them to repent of their sins, and become disciples of the Lord Jesus Christ, and witness about this decision of theirs through taking baptism (Acts 2:37-38). Implying that salvation and being acceptable to God is not through being ‘devout’, i.e., any good or religious deeds of men, but only by accepting the Lord Jesus Christ as their savior. When the gospel exposed their actual inner condition to them, then those people who heard the gospel realized the vanity of their being devout through fulfilling religious rituals and ceremonies, and came to understand their need of a really effective remedy to provide forgiveness of sins and salvation to them. Those accepted the gospel and submitted themselves to the Lord, they were to be baptized. Baptism did not make anyone a Christian; rather, those who became Christians, they were baptized.

* From the very beginning, the Christian Believers had four characteristics, and these are still an inseparable part of a Christian Believer’s life of faith even today, “And they continued steadfastly in the apostles' doctrine and fellowship, in the breaking of bread, and in prayers” (Acts 2:42). Even today, the basis of the steadfastness and growth of any Christian Assembly is the sincere and diligent observance of these four things - teaching and learning the Word of God, desire for mutual fellowship, regularly participating in the Lord’s Table, and praying together, by the members of the Assembly.

* It is the Lord who used to join those who were saved into the Assembly, and the disciples of the Lord had the favor of the people “praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to the church daily those who were being saved” (Acts 2:47).

* The then religious leaders and elders were very displeased with the preaching of the gospel and works of the Christian Believers, because of which along with the establishing of the Believer’s Assemblies, their opposition and persecution also started (Acts 8:1-3); but this only resulted in the spread and growth of the Christian Believers.

* Since the very beginning of the Christian Believer’s Assemblies, we never find any mention of any ‘Christian Religion’ or preaching of any religion. There is no mention anywhere of any observances of any traditions, rituals, ceremonies, celebration of any days of festivals, etc., other than the four fundamental characteristics of Acts 2:42 stated above.

* The non-Christians gave the Christian Believers a name, ‘people of the way’ (Acts 9:2), and this name remained with them throughout this book. Meaning, that the people saw, knew, and believed that the Christian Believers are a group of special people, who live and walk very differently than the usual worldly and religious people; they live and walk according to a distinctly different walk of life. But take note, this ‘way’ was never given any proper name, and neither was it ever called a ‘religion’ throughout this book - nor by the Christian Believers, and neither by the non-believers.

* After some time, at another place, these Christian Believers or, ‘the people of the way’ were called ‘Christians’ by the people “... So it was that for a whole year they assembled with the church and taught a great many people. And the disciples were first called Christians in Antioch” (Acts 11:26). Take particular note here that it is once again evident that the Christian Believers were never called or known as followers of any religion, nor were they associated with any religion; rather, it was only the disciples of Christ Jesus who were called ‘Christians’, not anyone else.

In the next article, on the basis of the above-mentioned Biblical facts we will consider about these initial Christian Believers, i.e., about the first Church and its growth, and derive some conclusions and lessons from these facts. For now, If you are still thinking of yourself as being a Christian, because of being born in a particular family, and having fulfilled the religious rites and rituals prescribed under your religion or denomination since your childhood, then like those ‘devout Jews’ you too need to come out of your misunderstanding of Biblical facts, and start living according to what the Word of God says, instead of what any denominational creed says or teaches.

Please forgive my sins, change my heart and mind towards you, and make me your disciple, take me with you." God longs for your company, wants to see you blessed; but to make this possible, is your personal decision.

 Christian Faith & Discipleship – 1

English Translation

Christian Faith - Some Basic Facts

In the previous articles, we have seen about a very important topic related to the Christian Faith,  What, according to the Bible, are sin and salvation; and have considered the important things related to them, and their implications. From today, we will be starting the next topic, “Christian Faith and Discipleship,” which builds further upon these topics. In this new series, today we will look at some basic facts about salvation, i.e., about being Born-Again,and about the Christian Faith.

As we have seen in the earlier articles, God does not have a religion, nor did He ever make any religion, and nor did the Lord Jesus ever ask His disciples to start and establish any religion in His name, or preach about a religion, and neither did the Lord ever give any teaching or instructions to do any religious conversions amongst the people of the world. The Lord Jesus sent out His disciples into the world to tell the people of the world about the gospel of salvation. Those who believe in and accept the Gospel, voluntarily decide to become the disciples of the Lord Jesus, to nurture them and help them live and grow as disciples of the Lord, “And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, "All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age." Amen” (Matthew 28:18-20). We have also seen that the provision that God has prepared and made available to mankind as remedy for the problem of sin, was neither done under any religion, nor did God associate it with any religion, nor is there any role or importance of any religious rituals, rites, and ceremonies, and neither is it achieved or implemented through any works or particular deeds. This provision made available by God is completely dependent upon a voluntary full-hearted acceptance of faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, the repentance of sins and asking for the Lord’s forgiveness for them without the inclusion or mediation of any other person between the Lord Jesus and the person accepting the Lord Jesus as Saviour. It is available to everyone, all over the world, free of any cost; their nationality, religion, caste, social status, prosperity, education, skin color, gender, etc. have no role, whatsoever, in their being saved by faith in the Lord Jesus. Also, God’s this provision is not hereditary or familail; every person has to take a considered decision about this in his life for himself, only then does it become applicable and effective in his life. Although this provision has been made available by God, but to accept it or reject it is every person’s personal decision; no one else can take the decision for, or, make it applicable for anyone else.

Therefore, according to God’s Word the Bible, believing in the Lord Jesus, establishing a relationship of faith with Him, and then living out that relationship of faith is what is known as the Christian Faith, it is not a religion and it never was a religion. Corrupting this Christian Faith and giving it the form and name of “Christian Religion” is not from God, neither has God got it done, nor is it acceptable to Him. According to the Bible, whether a person follows the Christian religion or any other religion, unless he is Born-Again and becomes a Christian Believer, unless he has come into a personal relationship with Lord Jesus Christ and has become His disciple, he is still continuing in his sins without their being forgiven; and all those who die without having received the forgiveness of their sins, will then have to suffer the punishment of their sins of being eternally separated from God in hell, even though he may be a staunch follower of the Christian religion, and may have been fulfilling all the rites, rituals, and ceremonies, and have been very diligently observing all the feasts and festivals traditionally associated with this religion.

In the next article, we will see in some detail the activities and beliefs of the initial Christian Believers, i.e., the First Church, as given in the Book of Acts, and understand this further. If you are still living in the deception of being righteous in God’s eyes through your religion, good works, self-righteousness etc. instead of the righteousness of repentance of sins and faith in the Lord Jesus, then it is my humble request that you please study about these things from God’s Word the Bible, and come to a correct decision. You can also do this by going through the previous articles on Sin and Salvation.

 Understanding Sin and Salvation – 42

English Translation

The Solution For Sin - Salvation - 39

Some Related Questions and their Answers (5b)

In the previous article we had started to consider the question "By being saved and Born-Again, and becoming a disciple of Lord Jesus Christ, is a person delivered from the worldly problems and pains, from sickness, adverse situations etc. and begins to live a life free of problems of the world?" and seek its answer from the Bible. We had seen that in the Bible, in the gospel accounts, neither the Lord Jesus, nor after the Lord His disciples engaged in Christian Ministry, ever give any such teaching or assurance to anyone. Rather, not only the Lord, but also the Disciples made it very clear that the life of Christian Faith is a life of continually suffering pain, persecution, and problems. Therefore, those who while preaching the gospel say that, after coming into the Christian Faith a person delivered from the worldly problems and pains, from sickness, adverse situations etc. and begins to live a life free of problems of the world preach their own contrived idea and not the facts of the Bible. Today we will continue to further ponder over this topic.

In God's Word the Bible, there are many other verses that show that the Christian life is a life of struggles, of facing the opposition of the world and persecution from the worldly people; and anyone who wants to follow the Lord Jesus, should be ready to face and suffer all of this. But every Christian Believer also has this assurance from God that in every problem and situation he faces, God will be with him, give him the required wisdom, power, and peace to face those situations, “These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world." (John 16:33), will safely carry him through those circumstances safe and secure, and eventually all things will work together for the good of the follower of the Lord “And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose” (Romans 8:28).

The whole of the New Testament is a witness to this fact that the followers of the Lord Jesus faced a lot of problems, pains, and persecutions during their ministry and Christian service. Life was never easy or convenient for them; rather, the very people amongst whom they served the Lord and did good for them, from those very people many turned against them and created a lot of problems for them. Nevertheless, anyone who has once experienced the Lord’s love, kindness, grace, and salvation, anyone who has experienced the peace and blessings of the Lord Jesus, even in all the hardships and problems he had to face, he who has come to realize the truth and reality of the Lord Jesus Christ, for him these problems and persecutions of the world became not a cause of being despondent, but a proof of the wonderful, excellent heavenly blessings that God has kept for them; and for the hope of those blessings, they continued to suffer all of this with joy “For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, is working for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory, while we do not look at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen. For the things which are seen are temporary, but the things which are not seen are eternal” (2 Corinthians 4:17-18). For such a person, physical healing has no significance, since he knows that eventually the body will die, someday; and presently whatever illness or weakness he may be having, the Lord will help him through it, and bless him because of it “And He said to me, "My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness." Therefore, most gladly I will rather boast in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me. Therefore, I take pleasure in infirmities, in reproaches, in needs, in persecutions, in distresses, for Christ's sake. For when I am weak, then I am strong” (2 Corinthians 12:9-10).

No Christian Believer should get perturbed about these circumstances and situations, “Let your conduct be without covetousness; be content with such things as you have. For He Himself has said, "I will never leave you nor forsake you." So, we may boldly say: "The Lord is my helper; I will not fear. What can man do to me?"” (Hebrews 13:5-6). Moreover, the Lord has also assured His disciples that He will never allow them to be tempted beyond their limits “No temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to man; but God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will also make the way of escape, that you may be able to bear it” (1 Corinthians 10:13). Satan and his people will make many attempts and efforts to discourage us and make us fail and fall, to become weak and distracted in our faith, to doubt the Lord and His Word. But do not get carried away by the things being spread by Satan, but make full use of the opportunity you have to utilize the Lord’s love, kindness, grace, and offer of forgiveness of sins being extended to you. The Lord Jesus has done His part; He has made ready and available salvation with all the benefits freely to everyone; but have you accepted His offer? Have you taken His hand of love and grace extended towards you and the free gift He offers; or are you still determined to do that which no man can ever accomplish through his own efforts?
